EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE YOU MEET SOMEONE THAT CHANGES YOUR LIFE FOREVER. For me, this person was Tina Fowler, founder and executive director of Polo in the Pines. Eight years ago I received a phone call from Tina after she saw an ad for an equestrian themed event I was running. She had an unbridled excitement about an event that she wanted to create to honor her mother, Sharon McCollum Knight, raising critical funds for cancer research. Her dream was to create a signature fundraising event in Atlanta that promoted her favorite equestrian sport of polo. Being a horseman, I was excited about the possibility and I arranged to meet her. What would follow would not only be a life changing opportunity for me personally, it would change my career path forever. Polo in the Pines would truly make me a “planner with a purpose.” My new life in Atlanta was already dedicated to working with nonprofit organizations but Polo in the Pines would be a new adventure for me and one that would unexpectedly fine-tune my efforts. Tina and I met that fateful day on a park bench in North Fulton County near the polo fields in Cumming. Her energy was intoxicating and I found myself swept up in her vision of a “Pretty Woman” inspired polo fundraiser that would leverage emerging brands, restaurants, wines, and spirits all for a greater good. And as we all know, when we gather to support those in need, the giving is indeed great. Our inspiring friendship and Polo in the Pines were born. There have been so many personal friends in Atlanta who have supported my efforts over the years and incredible partnerships have fueled my work with Polo in the Pines. This year, Tina and I are hoping our efforts and the efforts of our friends and guests will help us to reach our goal of over $1,000,000 raised in the last three years for pediatric brain cancer research being done right here in Georgia at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta! My life has certainly changed for the better over the years since moving to Atlanta from Beverly Hills. Polo in the Pines allowed me to adopt my new gratitude attitude and the work has made me a better man is every way. My work was seeding my joy and the more that I could accomplish for Polo in the Pines and Tina the more joyful I became. It is this pleasure that guides me in my decision making process, giving me the strength to continue my work and unleash new ideas and opportunities for Polo in the Pines. The event has grown over the years. This now two-day event is comprised of The Legacy Luncheon on Saturday and the Atlanta Polo Brunch Festival on Sunday. They are two of my favorite events on the Atlanta social calendar. We have harnessed so much good will and put it under it under one giant tent. You can feel the love and the intention as our friends and guests gather. Our friends and our guests have an amazing time and there is something to be said about “stomping the divots” with a glass of bubbles in early October in Atlanta. Won’t you join Tina Fowler and me on October 5 and 6? I can promise you that we will have a wonderful time, I am planning on it! October 2019 | Alpharetta Lifestyle

KITCHEN RENO MAKES ROOM FOR GRANDCHILDREN AND FRIENDS

A Family Kitchen PHOTOGRAPHY CATMAX PHOTOGRAPHY

DIANE JOHNSON INTERIORS RECENTLY COMPLETED A KITCHEN RENOVATION FOR EMPTY NESTERS WHO WANTED TO UPDATE THEIR SPACE TO FIT THEIR NEW LIFESTYLE. But, they weren’t downsizing! The couple happily entertains their kids and grandchildren, so asked Diane and her team to modernize their kitchen and add seating. We talked to Diane about the project. AL: HOW DID THE CLIENT FIND YOU? DJ: We met many years ago through a mutual friend who recommended my design services to the family. We have also renovated and designed additional rooms throughout their home including the terrace level. AL: WHAT WERE THEIR DIRECTIVES FOR THE DESIGN? DJ: The kitchen originally had horseshoe-shaped island which made the kitchen look very small, so a complete kitchen update was needed. The client wanted to modernize the kitchen and wanted to use the color blue in the room. And the loved the first swatch of fabric I showed her, so that set the tone.

18

Alpharetta Lifestyle | October 2019

AL: TELL US ABOUT THE LUCKY FAMILY WHO WILL ENJOY THIS RENO. DJ: This is a large family home with six visiting grandchildren. The client wanted to make better use of the large space so her family would have a nice space to congregate. For holiday meals the family serves fourteen people and the new kitchen design allows everyone to hang out in the kitchen and have a good time during the holidays and throughout the year. AL: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN FEATURES? DJ: We love the refrigerator because it doesn’t look like a regular refrigerator. It’s a side by side refrigerator and freezer cased and inside a expansive custom cupboard. I also like the bar that separates the kitchen from the family room because it’s very functional. AL: AND WHAT ARE THE CLIENT’S FAVORITE DESIGN FEATURES? DJ: The client loves the leathered marble counter tops because they are practical and pretty at the same time. She also loves her stove and refrigerator because they are both very large. My personal kitchen was their inspiration to help them envision what their kitchen could become with our design expertise and renovation. 9925 Haynes Bridge Rd # 720 Alpharetta 770.740.8414 DianeJohnsonInteriors.com

ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY ABBY BYRD DAVID MCDONALD IS THE OWNER OF VICTORIA RENOVATIONS, A FAMILY-OWNED COMPANY PASSIONATE ABOUT DESIGNING AND REMODELING HOMES THAT MAKE MEMORIES. From kitchen and bathroom remodeling to whole home remodeling, their in-house design team works with clients to create and design their vision from the ground up. We sat down with David after his team completed this project in Alpharetta. SGC: I understand you’ve done business with this family in Alpharetta before, finishing their basement 20 years ago, a year after your business opened. Then, you renovated the kitchen last year and bathrooms most recently. That’s amazing! Tell us about the most recent work. What were your goals and the homeowner’s goals with the renovation? was built with 10 foot ceilings which was not as common back in the late 90’s. The family wanted an updated design that would create a more open feel and a connected space between the kitchen and family rooms. We removed the wall, added hardwood floors in the family room to connect the two rooms better. All of the hardwood floors on the main level of the house were sanded and stained in a light grey color. A full repaint of the interior was also completed. SGC: Removing a wall in the kitchen meant loss of storage. How did you solve that issue? DM: We developed a plan to remove the small pantry area and expand that space to allow for larger pantry cabinets with lots of roll out storage and organizational space. That way, we kept all the wonderful windows along the back wall while opening up the living areas. SGC: You promise that your work is completed “in remarkable, meticulous fashion.” How do you accomplish that? DM: 90% of our work is Design-Build, the delivery method that keeps everyone under the same roof. Single-source responsibility means you work with a skilled team that brings innovative solutions and added value to every phase of the job. VictoriaRenovations.com 404.226.7533

OPEN HOUSE

Sta inless Cleaning Tip First, a vinegar and water mixtures cleans your appliances – without those harsh chemicals mentioned above. I keep a spray bottle specifically labeled for this mixture under my sink. You can get heavy-duty spray bottles on Amazon. Then, olive oil (yup, the stuff you cook with!) will buff away any leftover fingerprints, and also fend them off for a little while. Olive oil is the key to keeping your stainless steel appliances shiny. You will want to use a soft cloth to do this, like these microfiber cloths. More tips at KarissasVeganKitchen.com
