CFD offers car seat clinics most Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at various locations in the city. Clinics are conducted by CFD personnel who have been certified as child passenger seat technicians through SafeKids International. The firefighters ensure each child is safeguarded in the appropriate seat for their age and weight, and they provide oneon-one instruction to caregivers on how to properly install and use their child’s car seat. Motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death among children in the United States, due in large part to the non-use or improper use of child seats and seat belts. What You Need to Know About CBD WHAT IS CBD? Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound found in the resinous flower of cannabis, a plant with a rich history as a medicine going back thousands of years. WHAT IS CBD USED FOR? Many people are seeking alternatives to pharmaceuticals with harsh side effects—medicine more in sync with natural processes. By tapping into how we function biologically on a deep level, CBD is said to provide relief for chronic pain, anxiety, inflammation, depression, and many other conditions. WILL CBD MAKE ME FEEL “HIGH”? CBD is considered to be a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, so it will not get you high how marijuana does. THC, the compound that’s responsible for causing the marijuana “high,” is not present in CBD. Both CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are part of the cannabis plant, but when the product is made, THC is separated, and the CBD has a very small percentage (0.3%) or even none at all. IS CBD LEGAL? CBD, when hemp-derived, is legal in the United States, given the derived products are low in THC (below 0.3%). CBD oil is classified as a harmless supplement that can be bought over-the-counter, versus a plant with high THC which can only be bought with a license in most states. HOW DOES CBD WORK? Humans have a built-in cannabinoid receptor system called the endocannabinoid system. The system works to create homeostasis—in other words, establishing a stable internal environment despite fluctu-

This system is a highly attuned physiological system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. HOW DO I USE CBD? BACKFIT HEALTH + SPINE, ORIGINALLY STARTED IN CHANDLER, GROWS NATIONWIDE

Chandler Lifestyle | January 2020
BACKFIT HEALTH + SPINE, A MULTISPECIALTY MEDICAL CENTER, WAS STARTED IN CHANDLER NEARLY 18 YEARS AGO BY DR. YASMIN RAHIMI, DC, FIAMA (DR. YAS), AS A SMALL START-UP PRACTICE. When her brother, Dr. Radi Rahiminejad, DC, MUA (Dr. Radi), joined the practice shortly after its debut, the duo helped it to grow and—by 2005—they had four practices across the Valley. “My brother was the key driving force to our growth and success,” Dr. Yas says. “His experience with working for a multi-location group practice prior to joining me, combined with the vision I had created for what the BackFit experience should be, has allowed us to be successful and continue to grow.” In the family-run practice, Dr. Yas serves as the vice president, director of marketing and co-founder. Dr. Radi is BackFit’s president, CEO and co-founder, and their mother, Minoo Rahiminejad, is also at the helm as the practice’s CFO. BackFit places an emphasis on the concept of proactivity—essentially not just treating the disease, but finding and addressing its root cause. Each location—including two in Chandler and several in the East Valley— offers multiple specialties under one roof. The family notes that this year is one of tremendous growth as there are plans to open approximately 10 locations outside of the state in Colorado, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Illinois. These are in addition to their already established nine locations across the Valley. Dr. Yas credits their continuing success to a variety of factors. “Our success and growth are due to an amazing team of staff members that make the patient experience a positive and enjoyable one,” she says. “We are proud having team members that have been with us from the start of our first practice. We are also very patient-centered in our approach to health care. We do what we can to make the patient achieve the best results possible.” So what does it mean to be a multispecialty practice?

FAMILY MEDICINE (CONTINUED)
“Multispecialty means that we have multiple types of providers that manage patients,” Dr. Radi explains. “Medical providers, chiropractors, and physical therapists all work together under one roof and in a collaborative effort they create a tailored plan of care for each patient. “This not only saves time and money for the patient because they are able to see different providers within the same visit, but it manages their care more efficiently because the providers are able to effectively communicate with one another, provide multiple types of care, and get the best results possible for the patient,” he continues. According to the BackFit team, they provide a proactive and integrative approach to wellness. Examples of services include allergy testing, nutrition, weight loss, pain management and pain prevention, sports medicine, massage therapy, chiropractic, accident and injury care, and many other specialties, all under one roof. It’s like one-stop shopping for all of the patient’s medical needs. Dr. Radi shares how this multispecialty, proactive emphasis to health might differ from more traditional medical practices. “Traditional medicine looks as the body as a bunch of parts that are not interconnected,” he explains. “When you come to BackFit, we find the root of the problem and treat the whole chain of areas that affect the body part. We work on getting to the root cause and dealing with all the factors that could be attributing to your pain or discomfort and preventing it from reoccurring. We know patients are tired of just masking their symptoms with endless medications and short-lived therapy. It is only when you combine effective modalities that the patient gets back to doing and living the way they deserve to live.” To learn more about BackFit Health + Spine, visit BackFitHealth.com.

CHARLESTON'S SERVES UP AMERICAN CLASSICS WITH A FRESH TWIST THE PERFECT COZY SPOT FOR FAMILY TOGETHERNESS
WINTER IS THE TIME FOR COMFORT FOODS AND COZY SURROUNDINGS. Familiarity and mouth-watering food around the table abound in these colder times, and Charleston’s is a nostalgic name in the Valley, offering a plethora of delicious winter favorites with an ambiance that is meant for family togetherness. The casual, upbeat atmosphere at Charleston’s is equal parts classy and welcoming, utilizing dark woods and gas fixture lighting. This, coupled with a modestly priced menu, makes it a hot spot for festivities this winter. American classics with a fresh twist are prepared from scratch daily with the highest quality ingredients. Fragrant dishes such as the decadent baked potato soup, topped with bacon, chives and cheese; barbeque baby back ribs, slowcooked and falling off the bone; grilled pork chop, made on hardwood and grilled with mashed potatoes and baked beans; and the popular enchilada plate, filled with grilled chicken, Monterey Jack

A different soup is featured each day, ranging from chicken tortilla to gumbo, and clam chowder and chili, while the baked potato soup is offered daily. A huge stone bar is the centerpiece of the restaurant. Enjoy a glass of wine from the extensive list, or try one of the signature drinks like the perfect margarita or peach bellini. The action of the display kitchen is great for young kids and families to watch as they dine, and kids 12 and under can enjoy items from the kid’s menu. There are seven different options, including a grilled cheese sandwich, kid’s sirloin, mac and cheese, and a kid’s burger. Charleston’s also has a gluten-free menu, and offers happy hour Monday through Friday. Grilled pork chops

They’re a full-service spa. New club members receive two complimentary treatments and a membership discount. “The Village is a place to take care of yourself. It’s a one-stop shop where you can work out, enjoy a spa service, shop, eat and socialize. Staff and members alike are friendly and happy,” Michelle explains. Ocotillo Village offers more than 140 group fitness and yoga classes weekly, and private and group Pilates sessions. They have qualified personal training for beginners and advanced athletes. “Fitness is important since it allows us to keep moving, be active and enjoy a healthier and longer life,” says Linda Bernal, the group fitness, yoga and Pilates director. “Fitness is what helps us stay green and growing. I always end by telling members to thank your bodies for one more day and one more workout.” They also offer MYZONE, an innovative, wearable heart ratebased system that uses wireless and cloud technology to accurately monitor physical activity. “This helps members work smarter, not just harder,” says Linda. “Members constantly comment that they have built many friendships and a great sense of community. This is not your everyday gym. Imagine yourself coming in for a great workout with a friend, and then enjoying a great meal with a glass of wine in the café.” The Lakeview Café is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It serves healthy options like salads, protein plates, grilled salmon and chicken, as well as protein shakes, energy bars and drinks. “We are not your typical café,” explains Carla Diaz, the café manager. One of her favorite dishes is the stuffed chicken breast with spinach and feta cheese wrapped with bacon. “We have it all, amazing group exercise classes and yoga. We have a family pool, a lap pool, tennis court, basketball courts, an amazing Kid’s Club, and of course the amazing Café. But the best part is all the people who work here. They all are very loving and caring people who love what they do and genuinely want to help our members achieve their fitness goals. I love being part of such amazing club,” she says.

WO R KO U T S F O R YO U R MOODS NEW YEAR, NEW US. We don’t mean to be cliché, but is there really any better time for working on yourself than when Jan. 1 rolls around—whether you’re focused on your physical health or your mental health? It sure seems like the perfect time, but there will also be days when you’re just not quite feeling it. The holidays are over, the days are shorter and, let’s face it, there’s not really a ton to look forward to until spring sprouts. But, whatever

BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.
C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.
ENTHUSIASTS Whether you’re into 10Ks or half marathons, consider signing up for a new race and decreasing your time. When your head is full of thoughts, it can get overwhelming. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) provides a break from that with short bursts of 100% focus followed by rest. Here’s a quick circuit.
