Creativity is actually the mental capacity to generate novel and useful ideas. It isn’t about art or design, writing or music. Creativity is, at its core, about ideas and how we develop, understand, and communicate them. Not just in terms of the arts, but in every realm of thinking imaginable. THE EXQUISITE DETAIL OF SELECTING THE PERFECT CUT SUSAN HARRISON HAS HAD A LIFE LONG PASSION FOR JEWELRY. As a child she remembers taking out all of her mother’s jewelry and arranging displays, under supervision of course. While attending Colorado State University she got her first job behind a department store jewelry counter and now, at 63 years of age she’s the 30 at the helm of her very own jewelry store, Jewelry Emporium, and has yet to fall out of love with the business. “Every day I come in to work and put the key in the door and I’m excited,” Harrison tells of her persisting joy in the jewelry business. Harrison initially started working at Jewelry Emporium as a manager and buyer when they first opened in 1979 and bought the store from Russ Kates, the stores’ original owner, in 1990. Since the business first opened in Fort Collins’ old town square they’ve moved several times and are now located in a strip of the Foothills Mall complex on the east side of College Avenue. 10

From the moment you step into her store that energy and lifelong passion for jewelry becomes apparent in a comfortable yet elegant atmosphere where shoppers are encouraged to look through display cases filled with pieces for every person’s taste. From simple rings, bracelets and necklaces to extravagant, jewel encrusted designs, Harrison has made a point of providing a diverse array of options for her customers. “I like jewelry as a wearable artform, people can express their uniqueness by wearing something really individual, unique and different,” Harrison says of her wide-ranging and ever-changing selection. To that same end she carries the work of roughly 50 different jewelry designers from around the world in the shop, something that immediately sets her store apart from the big-box retailers that carry the same selection across all of their locations. The store also hosts regular events where customers can meet artists and peruse an even broader selection of their pieces. Harrison is also proud to boast that she is the only retailer in Northern Colorado to carry the popular Pandora line of diamond jewelry. In an effort to provide the best possible service to her customers Harrison has also spent the last ten years making regular trips to Antwerp, Belgium’s centuries-old Diamond District to purchase stones not only for her store but also as a personal liaison for customers who are looking for something especially specific and unique. Harrison is able to make these trips and visit Antwerps’ world renowned diamond cutters because of her status as an Independent Jewelers Organization Master Jeweler and says her customers, many of whom affectionately refer to her as ‘Diamond Sue,’ regularly take advantage of the opportunity to have a personal shopper in the diamond capital of the world. While hers may not be the most affordable jewelry retailer in town, Harrison says an important aspect of what she offers her customers is a guarantee of quality in the stones and pieces and she provides regular care and maintenance for all of the jewelry she sells, even going so far as to replace stones CONTINUED >

BREATHTAKING, AWESOME, SPECTACULAR, MAGNIFICENT - ALL OF THOSE SUPERLATIVES FIT, AND YET, ARE NOT NEARLY ENOUGH TO DESCRIBE THE INCREDIBLE NATURAL BEAUTY FOUND IN UTAH’S NATIONAL AND STATE PARKS, AS WELL AS SURROUNDING AREAS. In 2013, Travel Utah named the state’s five beloved national parks (Arches, Bryce, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion) in the southern part of the state as the “Mighty 5.” All are majestic, iconic and all ideal for a distanced visit in these uncertain times. Autumn and spring are perhaps the perfect and safest seasons to visit the parks, in regards to both weather and crowds. This October and November, head on over to our neighbor - it’s an easy and beautiful drive from Colorado to explore Utah’s incredible beauty! We visited Capitol Reef in late July, during the pandemic, and found it blissfully less crowded than the other parks we had visited in the past. A picturesque just shy of 8 hours(mostly on I-70 and Utah 24) from Loveland,Colorado, this is a very doable three-day minivacation.

In the historic Fruita area of the park, where Mormon settlers raised crops decades ago, visitors can take in a wide variety of trails, from strenuous to easy strolls. We enjoyed the Capitol Reef Loop, which took about 3 hours with many photo stops, as well as Hickman Bridge, which leads to an amazing natural stone arch “bridge.” Behind the excellent visitor center, it is a fun break to walk through the river bed, wading through the cool waters, to reach a small waterfall and pond - about 45 minutes. Round trip distances on trails vary in length from less than 0.25 miles to 10 miles (0.8-16 km). All trails are marked with signs at the trailhead and at trail junctions and by cairns (stacks of rocks) along the way. Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. ARTIST’S PALETTE

for the love

OF VINYL OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS VINYL HAS REEMERGED ON THE SCENE.

LIKE AN AGING ROCKER, VINYL IS MAKING A COMEBACK. In the first half of this year the RIAA says sales reached $224m, so what’s fueling this vinyl revival? With screens taking over our lives, people’s values are changing. Tired of the status quo people are investing in vinyl given the multi-sensory value it provides. “Sitting in a room, alone, listening to a CD is to be lonely. Sitting in a room alone with an LP crackling away, or sitting next to the turntable listening to a song at a time via 7-inch single is enjoying the sublime state of solitude.” - Henry Rollins of Black Flag The act of putting on an LP is relatively simple but the process can be meditative with its repetition. Digital is convenient, but analog music requires more elaborate, ritualized attention. Musically, I’m engaged. I’m tuned-in. It’s an interactive, involving listening experience where I’m leaning in, versus the more passive experience of an endless playlist. Music can fade into the background easily when we stream it or tune into a radio station. You’re not always sure of the artist, or song as it plays on. No judgment, it’s a lot to keep up with. We hear it and we can conveniently go on with our day. But are we really listening? We tune in and out, depending on the track. When you take the time to put a record on, you’re flooded with anticipation. You hear it start to crackle. The show is about to start. Records are more than music, they are a tangible piece of history. “I remember opening up my first vinyl and seeing the incredible artwork it had. There’s nothing like it. You also get that true gritty sound on vinyl that really makes a rock record sound great, which CDs can never achieve.” - Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe

32

On many album covers, you find timeless photography and bold graphic design. What do Andy Warhol, Peter Max, Romare Bearden, Paula

Scher, and Saul Bass, all have in common? They have all designed album covers. Many of the world’s top designers have. Reid Miles’ cool graphics and typography for Blue Note in the ’50s, photographer Lee Friedlander’s distinctive portraits for Atlantic in the ’60s. Along with the musical performances packaged within, a record is a history you can hold. The art continues even on the turntable. Open or remove your player’s lid because some record labels have artwork that animates as the record plays and others with 3D holograms that rise up as it spins. Once I started to appreciate the whole record, not just the music, I got serious about their storage. They’re moments of history that need to be respected and preserved. Storage and display are important and since what I was seeing on the market didn’t quite fit my needs, I built my own record shelf. Whether you’ve got a small curated collection of select vinyl you love or hundreds of records in need of a defined space, you need a way to keep them organized. You want to properly store your records for easy access, aesthetics, and protection. Style is important, but so is functionality. The type of listener you are will help determine the type of collection you’ll end up needing to plan storage around. Do you listen to music alone mostly or are you looking to entertain?

ARTIST’S PALETTE (CONTINUED)

Hosting listening parties, versus more intimate sessions, require different spatial commitments. If hosting, you’re going to want a variety of albums and artists to appease various tastes and moods. An obsessive like myself has over 1,600 records, but I try to keep my collection limited to albums I enjoy start to finish. No skipping tracks. Just put it on the spindle and drop the needle. Gently! For a smaller collection of just your favorites, there are a variety of ways to store and also display your vinyl. You can tuck them away in media cabinets, or present them on ‘now playing’ displays, bookshelves, wall displays, and hanging cabinets. Technology today can see digital format music uncompressed, as high-quality audio, so the whole argument of vinyl as superior to digital is not absolute. I appreciate vinyl’s imperfections and physicality. The pop and crackle of the needle on the record. The anticipation of the album’s open. It’s quite literally, a vibe. Pun intended! I also geek out on its simple sophistication. The music we hear is the sound of a needle vibrating in the groove. Marvelous. I own vinyl for the experience. The music, the art, and, let’s not forget, the secret history of some of these objects. Many of the records in my collection have been around longer than I have and will be around long after.
