YOUR l ocal FINANCIAL ADVISORS ANNE PEDERSEN WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2020? I am excited to work with my clients as they experience life changes this year. I have had the pleasure of working with some for many years who are preparing to retire, entering retirement or are in retirement. These are the kinds of things that together, we will make sure to address. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO MORE OF AND WHY? My goal is to “dig deeper” with my clients this year, making sure we have addressed everything they need to prepare for the years ahead. Do we need to update their beneficiaries and estate plans? Should we take a look at their life insurance? These are just some of the things we will address this year in preparation for the future.

STACY BURTIN MILLS WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE NEW YEAR? I am looking forward to a healthy and happy 2020. As many of my loved ones are over the age of 80, I am just thankful for each year I have with them. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO MORE OF AND WHY? I am going to exercise more. My daughter and I have already started. My husband is going to start in January, so it will be a family affair. We will hold each other accountable or drive each other crazy.

RYAN BARBER WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE NEW YEAR? I look forward to every New Year, whatever may come. Watching my kids develop, grow and laugh (most importantly) is what I most look forward to. I also look forward to my 16th year with Edward Jones. I feel very grateful for every one of my clients. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO MORE OF AND WHY? More family dinners! Life seems to be getting more chaotic with kids’ events. Therefore, we will plan better to spend more time at the table. There’s no better place to listen to one another without distractions. Also, I’m going to meditate more, take more time to breathe and be thankful.

a fresh start, and it often motivates us to put our priorities into perspective. I’ve been thinking a lot about how fast one stage of life morphs into another. 2020 will be the last full year that my oldest child will be living at home before he goes off to college. Wow. I often find myself wondering how it has gone by so fast. The thought of it prompts me to reflect on how we have spent our time as a family, the traditions we have made, how we have prepared him (or what still needs to be taught) for success in the real world, and mostly how I’m not ready for this stage to shift. So my list of things I want to accomplish in 2020 is quite a bit longer than usual as I try to hold on to the end of an era with all of my children under one roof. I will also be learning to embrace this changing season of our lives and appreciate this next chapter. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right,

JOHNS FAMILY LOVE STORY

ARTICLE ADRIANE TAYLOR

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2020

“I KNOW THAT NOTHING CAN TAKE THE PAIN AWAY, BUT THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT PAIN AND TRAGEDY AND GRIEF. When we allow Jesus to walk with us, and surrender it to him, it is precious to him. On the other side of that grief is heaven where there is no pain. There is only love and joy and goodness.” —Sarah Johns She danced in worship with a childlike faith, blonde hair flowing as she captured the goodness of Jesus with every heartfelt twirl. The empty pews of Church of the Rock were filled with warmth as Elise Johns engaged in the most joyous of praise. It was her second home and a place where she felt liberated in honoring the Lord—the occasion lovingly recorded by one of her biggest fans, her mother Sarah Johns. It is a moment that would forever encapsulate the essence of who Elise is. But it is the events that occurred just weeks later that would release Elise’s divine spirit far beyond the walls of this Kansas City church.

SUPERNAT UR AL GR ACE (CONTINUED)

The words, “Your daughter has brain death and there is nothing we can do,” caused her to collapse to her knees and proclaim, “There is something we can do! We can pray!” Prayer is something she continued to do throughout the night, and it was one conversation with God that elicited a mindset switch. Sarah pleaded, “What am I going to do? How am I going to make it without her?” His response was swift: “How would Elise want you to live? Would she want you to wallow and be depressed, although you have every right to be? Elise would want you to make every moment count. Elise would want you to be a good mommy to Kaden and Hope. Elise would want you to live your best life. Elise would want you to bring light and love wherever you go, not out of obligation but out of honoring her.”

“Knowing and encountering the goodness of God and discovering more of that is what has truly helped me.”

In that moment she made the choice that for the sake of their daughter, she would live life to the fullest, and this decision would be continuously challenged. On August 28, 2017 Elise transitioned to be with Lord. The beauty in this tragedy is that the Johns family received the gift of five additional days with Elise when she was not expected to make it beyond the site of the accident. And because of this her organs were able to be donated. 14

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2020

Beyond her time here on earth, Elise was able to give life to people who had been on waiting lists for years.

AT FIRST IT MIGHT NOT SEEM LOGICAL TO CONNECT A PASSION FOR NUTRITION AND RAW JUICES WITH A LOVE FOR DONKEYS. Yet Kate Barker has done just that through her company, Zen Donkey Farms. After going through some stressful times in the corporate world, Kate needed to make some lifestyle and nutritional changes. As a result, she and her partner Andy began growing organic veggies and juicing the extras for their own health. They simultaneously began to rescue a small herd of donkeys after learning about the donkey hide trade. “Nutrition has always been a cornerstone of my life,” Barker says. Since beginning to grow veggies and make juices, she’s transitioned to a totally vegan and organic lifestyle and says it’s the best health decision she’s made. The juices were a big part of successfully adopting a plantbased lifestyle, and it got the entrepreneurial wheels in her head turning. “It changed my perspective on how we as humans interact with food,” she says. “The juice itself as a product transformed our lives as a family, so we started sharing it.” Donkeys particularly captured Barker’s interest as she has worked as a volunteer in horse-assisted therapy for more than 20 years, and she has a passion to help people heal. She began to see possibilities for donkeys as therapy animals. “We were enamored and immediately drawn to their kind spirit,” she says. “They are incredible beings. No one really sees how intelligent and versatile donkeys are, and we believe they can be powerful therapy and wellness facilitators.” CONTINUED >

enough time to dedicate to such a big physical goal while taking care of a young family. When she saw a picture of a friend in a fitness competition, an idea began to take root. She hadn’t previously realized it was something she could do without becoming the bulky body-builder type. Yet entering such a competition wasn’t feasible for her to do at the time, so it was a dream she sat on for a decade or more. Finally, when her youngest child entered kindergarten and she gained a little more time, a friend asked Walter if she would do a show with her and allow her to train her. This time, her answer was yes. “We decided to seize the moment as moms,” Walter says. January 2020 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

“Everyone is coming from a different place in life doing something like this,” she says. “Some are moms like me. There were plenty of amateurs, and there were some diehards.” Overall, Walter has gained an appreciation for how the body works. “Our bodies are absolutely amazingly structured and orchestrated,” she says. “We are designed to thrive. What we put in our bodies for nourishment and how we train is so key to overall health— emotional, mental and physical.” For people looking to improve their sense of fitness and wellness, Walter says it’s important to never give up on personal goals or dreams. She says to be rational about timing and expectations in achieving your goals and to make sure your expectations are healthy for you. After that, she says to go for your goal. “Remember self-discipline and taking care of one’s self isn’t easy and doesn’t always feel good in the process, but it is so rewarding in the long run,” she says. “I guarantee your strength, discipline and confidence will have a ripple effect on other areas and people in your life.” 30

Holidays can be a difficult time for divorced parents For many divorced families, the holiday season can be an emotionally and logistically challenging experience. Coparenting already comes with difficulties, and sharing parenting time during the holidays can pose unique stresses for parents. However, holidays can also be an occasion for parents to demonstrate that their love for their kids is more important than issues with an ex-partner. This can be incredibly important for strengthening the psychological support for children who live in separate homes after divorce. There are several tips that people who are dealing with shared parenting time can keep in mind in order to create a more positive holiday environment. Even after ugly divorces, exes can have

a successful co-parenting relationship that fully respects each parent’s relationship with the children. It is important for the parents to be flexible and open-minded. While parenting time may be outlined in a divorce court order, family schedules often require flexibility during the holidays. When the parents can trust each other to make agreements, it can be possible to make plans to switch days and allow the kids to see each partner’s extended family. Agreeing in writing can help to make sure that the parenting time shift is formalized. It’s also important for each parent to be kind to each other about problems that might arise during the holidays and continue to work for a positive relationship.

A parent heading for divorce may retain a family law attorney who can represent their interests in court. The family lawyer could advocate for their relationship with the child and obtain a court order that reflects the child’s best interests. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, mediation, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. LOCAL GYMS AND HEALTH-FOOD STORES ARE PACKED NOW THAT THE HOLIDAYS ARE OVER, AND A NEW YEAR HAS BEGUN. There also is no better time to schedule a dental appointment. “January is that time for resolutions,” says Paul Matlock, DDS, of Matlock Dental Care in Lee’s Summit. “Most people in some form or another resolve to take better care of themselves throughout the year. Why not start with dental health?” Just as eyes are the window to the soul, he says, the mouth is the window to the body. “We can tell a lot about what is happening with a patient’s general health just by doing a simple oral exam,” Matlock says. “Combine that with the personal relationship that we build, along with mutual trust, and we can potentially identify serious general health problems.” Matlock has been caring for local families for more than two decades, and his practice has grown to include three full-time hygienists, two full-time dental assistants and three full-time administrators. “We provide comprehensive, patient-driven dental care that includes gum disease treatments, dental implants and all forms of cosmetic treatment and advanced and complex restorative cases,” he says. “We also provide dental sleep medicine for patients with sleep apnea, as well as treatment for TMJ disorders.” Matlock Dental has enjoyed the same steady growth as the community it serves. “Lee’s Summit is a wonderful place to live and work,” Matlock says. “I have been privileged to be able to serve this community for so long. This is the place that my wife, Amy, and I chose to raise our three children. I enjoy running into patients at the grocery store or the gym, or just walking around downtown Lee’s Summit and being able to interact and socialize.” Along with the city’s growth has come an influx of new dental practices. Matlock Dental keeps its momentum going by combining cutting-edge technology with old-fashioned care.
