THANKSGIVING MEMORY, THEY EACH REPLIED WITH A DIFFERENT STORY. One waxed poetic about the time we rented out a small nightclub so we could have a family jam session on the stage. A few years later, we puzzled together every table in the house to seat more than 20 shoulder to shoulder, little ones included. The kids made place cards out of 3 x 5 cards and dried flowers (my mom’s idea). When we moved south to Atlanta 10 years ago, my daughter stayed behind to finish her senior year (the graduation requirements were dramatically different here) and she stayed with family friends, my heart breaking all the way. We drove north through snowy Ohio and Michigan for Thanksgiving, spreading out across ping pong tables and card tables and included my extended family and theirs. I sobbed my way through the blessing, overflowing with gratitude and probably some guilt for having to sepa-

team as a 2020 National i-Ready Distinguished School for Remote Learning Success, during the first three months of COVID-19. The average student completed 35 lessons or more with an 80% pass rate. Chattahoochee High School sophomore Alan Qiao helped found an organization called Aegis for Schools to assist school environments during uncertain and difficult times, inspired by the pandemic, and donated 600 masks to his school. Ocee Elementary School had a virtual Careers on Wheels, supported by the Counseling department in which students dressed up for the career they want to have. Johns Creek High School held its first “Senior Sunrise” event for the Class of 2021, a class bonding event during virtual learning. The drive-thru event collaboration with business partners Sara’s Donuts and Chickfil-A brought out sleepy seniors in decorated cars to receive breakfast and coffee with mugs emblazoned with the senior logo.

ART ON THE STREETS Although the Leadership Johns Creek class of 2020 had to be postponed because of COVID-19, the teams continued to plan to see their group projects to completion. The See the Creek team hosted a ribbon cutting and dedication of their interactive mural project at Newtown Park last month. The mural is called “Everyone Has a Seat in Johns Creek” and was created by internationally known artist Kelsey Montague. The team members who diligently planned, raised funds and worked so hard together to bring these seats to Johns Creek include: Alex Almanza, Taña Welch, Chad Smith,

DIRECTOR,

TO FIND OUT WHAT OPTIONS SHE RECOMMENDS FOR SKINCARE AS WE LOOK FORWARD, TOWARD A BRIGHT NEW YEAR. JCL: What is a smart entry-level non-surgical facial or treatment for someone who is new to the medspa and wants to feel fresh and glowy after so many months of heavy news and worry? AV: Both Hydrafacial and BBL(broadband light) are low-cost entry-level non-surgical treatments for someone who is new to the medspa. Immediately following a Hydrafacial the skin will feel refreshed and it will be radiant and glowing. On the other hand, BBL results will be seen in about a week but will have more lasting results JCL: And, for someone who has had success with chemical peels, what’s the next level? AV: That would depend on what type of skin issues they would like to address. For example, if they are looking to address more texture-based issues or skin tightening,

only non-medical grade chemical peels, medical-grade chemical peels could be performed to address a variety of skin problems including acne, wrinkles, and pigmentation. JCL: What is your favorite tool of the trade in your office? AV: The Sciton Joule, is a multiplatform piece of equipment that allows me to rejuvenate the skin with broadband light and/or Halo. The broadband light diminishes brown pigment, red pigment, and stimulates collagen production in the skin. Once we resolve these issues, we recommend twice a year maintenance treatments. In addition, we can use the broadband light to treat rosacea and acne. Halo, a hybrid ablative and non-ablative laser is fantastic for resurfacing. Halo can also be used in combination with broadband light. The result is radiant, glowng skin. JCL: At-home skincare is important. What are your recommended products for women at different stages of their lives? AV: No matter what age group, sunscreen is a must and can be thought of as insurance for protecting your investment. As we age it is so important that we exfoliate our skin because our skin cells do not turn over as quickly as when we are younger. A good exfoliant to 16

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

Joan Compton Giving back: I co-founded the Johns Creek Historical Society after realizing historic structures and links to early farm families were disappearing - and with them the history of the area. In a diverse city with predominantly residents from other areas of the country and world, I’ve found that the history of the land where they now live, work, and travel daily can be a

Johns Creek’s history. We also have several preservation projects including working with the City of Johns Creek to improve and preserve a small historic abandoned African-American cemetery. Much of my time volunteering is spent researching local history, preparing programming, acquiring donations of historic documents and artifacts, making connections with those that have long roots in the area, and answering requests for genealogy information. Pivots: Sharing local history is an important part of the mission. Ordinarily, the Johns Creek Historical Society would hold monthly meetings plus present additional history programming throughout the community. While these normal ways to keep members and the community engaged are on hold, we are collaborating with other organizations to present limited-capacity history presentations at unexpected outdoor venues and experimenting with online programming. Research is relying more on online sources and less on in-person visits to genealogy and history archives. Giving thanks: This year I’ve added a new item to my usual list of thanks – for all the technology and online platforms that facilitate coordinating projects with co-workers and provide a way to stay connected with family and friends. Around my table: Due to the pandemic, we’ll enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving foods, but will most likely be sharing the table virtually with family and friends located in other states.

FAITH REFLECTIONS

WALKING THE WALK

A JOURNEY DOWN THE WINDING LIFE PATH OF UNASSUMING SPIRITUAL LEADER FRANCIS CHAN

FROM THE PULPIT OF A THRIVING MEGACHURCH OF MORE THAN 5,000 MEMBERS AND GROWING, TO A HOME IN THE POOREST REGION OF HONG KONG. From authoring a New York Times bestseller, to being surrounded by people struggling to make it by on just 50 cents a day. For most, it probably sounds like a tale of riches to rags; an unfortunate result of someone falling upon hard times. But for Francis Chan, it’s exactly what his soul needed—an opportunity to fulfill his God-given purpose of becoming a man who can truly say he practices what he preaches. And it was all by his own choice (with maybe a little guidance from above). Francis, born in San Francisco, was raised in a traditional Chinese home and navigated a challenging upbringing. His mother died during childbirth. His father remarried, then his stepmother died in a car accident when he was 8. His father remarried again, then, when Francis was 12, died of cancer. Francis was around 14 when he was introduced to a youth group by a friend. “I fell in love with Jesus,” he says, explaining that it was

then he decided if there really was a Heaven and Hell, it didn’t make sense to spend his life doing anything other than telling people about Him. Twenty-six and newly married, Francis and his wife Lisa founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California in the early 90s, beginning with 30 people. Within the first two months, the church grew to 100. In 2000, the church grew even more, to 1,600. By 2008, Cornerstone Community Church was one of the largest in Ventura County and Francis’ new book “Crazy Love” was a New York Times bestseller. CONTINUED >

FAITH REFLECTIONS (CONTINUED)

Watch the full interview @ CityLifestyle.com! Then, in 2010, Francis decided to leave it all. But, he wasn’t leaving God. He was separating himself from the megachurch that had started in his living room as he and other elders began to question its direction. “Was this really what the Church is meant to be? Is this all God had in mind when he created His Church in the first place?” Francis questions in his second book Letters to the Church. “We began to wonder if our definition of a church actually fit God’s definition.” “Everything had grown to be very dependent upon one person,” he continues. “The Bible tells us that every member of the body has a gift that is necessary to the functioning of the church. When I looked at what went on in Cornerstone, I saw me and a few other people using our gifts, while thousands just came and sat in the sanctuary for an hour and a half and then went home.” After leaving Cornerstone, Francis wrestled with what the next step was. He and Lisa ended up selling their Simi Valley house and moving their family of six at the time overseas to India, Thailand and China. And the $1 million his bestselling book made in the first year, plus the money it continues to make? Francis signed it all over to a charitable gift fund helping the poor and victims of human trafficking. “We witnessed the simplicity of the lifestyles in rural Thailand, and the joy of the men and women who served widows and orphans day in and day out” “You meet these believers that just blow your mind. It’s everything the Bible talks about,” Francis says, inspired by those he’s met throughout his travels. “Some of the

“One day I was just like, ‘Honey, this week I’m going to take you to Disneyland!’ And she was like, ‘What’s that?’” he says. “I go, ‘You have no clue. This is like the happiest place on Earth. You’re gonna go nuts!’” Francis says Rachel began to get very sad, asking if they could just go to Paint Pals. “She’s working herself into tears,” he laughs. “Like, you’re crying because I’m about to take you to Disneyland.”
