Lifestyle Letter

Home is where my heart is. H

ow blessed are we to live in a community of picturesque neighborhoods with homes and lawns and gardens that are well-maintained? Where people take pride in their homes? I find so much joy in living in a town where there are great parks and public spaces with fountains or public art and even parks for our dogs.

When I take a walk or jog around the neighborhood I love to notice the details about the homes I pass. Details I miss when I’m driving or riding in a car, such as the flowers on the front porch or the annuals that flourish in their gardens, the color of or decorations hanging on the front door, the neighborhood greenspaces, and so on. Because I’m fortunate enough to work from home, I’m able to spend most of my time in the home my family has created. My home office is really just the corner of a room we weren’t using nine years ago when I needed to set up shop from home. I love being able to enjoy this space I’ve created for my family, and as strange as it may be to admit, I love being able to tidy it up when I need to take five from the office chair.

FAMILY OWNED COMPANY GIVES YOU THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS IN FLOORING ARTICLE LISA ALLEN | PHOTOGRAPHY SUSAN MOTLEY

M

ike Eddings and his staff could show you thousands of tile choices if you’re so inclined. But they’d rather not do that. They’d rather listen first, so they can understand what you need and what you want your space to look like. Then they’ll show you products and photos of previous projects, and walk you through the steps necessary to pick just the right flooring for you. “The choices can be overwhelming,” says Eddings, who owns Legacy Flooring with his brother Scott. “Products are constantly changing, and it can be mind-boggling to keep up with all the options that are out there.” What doesn’t change is the philosophy upon which Legacy Flooring is built: superior customer service, attention to detail, and onestop shopping. “We grew up here,” says Eddings. “We graduated from

24

Johnson County Lifestyle | November 2015

Olathe schools and our kids are in Olathe schools. We’ve built our lives here, and we’ll be here for the rest of our lives. It’s important to us that customers tell their friends ‘Hey, you need to use these guys.’” There’s more than one element to Legacy Floorings’ business: there’s the commercial aspect, builder work, and residential customers. If you’ve walked into a McDonald’s, the new Austin’s in Olathe, or a Pot Belly Pig or a QDoba restaurant, you’ve likely walked on a Legacy Flooring floor. Other recent commercial projects have been the new DeBruce Center, home to Naismith's original Rules of Basketball; the Spencer Museum of Art; and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house, all at the University of Kansas. The business creates countless custom walk-in showers and high-end exterior tile decks and offers heated tile flooring and solid surface countertop options like granite and quartz. Builders and their customers go to Legacy Flooring for options on their construction projects. In addition to commercial projects, the team at Legacy Flooring works on an average of 10 new construction houses per week, and about a half-dozen residential projects. “Floor covering is the third largest purchase a person makes in his or her lifetime, right behind a house and a car," says Eddings. "That’s a big deal. It requires time and information to make the right decisions. We welcome clients in to our showroom by appointment so the focus is totally on them during that initial hour

or two. Our designers keep up with current trends and they’re always on top of what’s new, so they can help navigate the choices available and answer questions about how those trends translate to a client’s design aesthetic and home. Coming into the showroom and meeting us is an important part of what sets us apart from other stores,” says Eddings. “Whoever a customer deals with at the beginning is who they work with through the entire process. We know that being welcomed into someone’s home isn’t something to take lightly. The majority of our installers work directly for us, and there are always two to three installers on a crew. They drive our company van and wear our company shirts, because we trust them. And we know our clients trust us, because they leave us their keys and garage openers. That’s something we respect, and we take that trust seriously.” Eddings started in the flooring business as an installer in the mid 1980s before deciding to open a store with his two brothers and their dad. Then he and his brother Scott opened Legacy Flooring in 2010. Now Scott’s wife Jodi manages the office and the brothers employ a staff of experienced designers, sales professionals and installers. “It’s satisfying to create and design new projects,” says Eddings. “I’ve been in the business since high school but it never gets boring because there’s always a new project to work on.” Learn more at LegacyFlooring1.com or call the showroom at 913.780.6060

Field Trip

of a Lifetime FALL IN LOVE WITH KANSAS CITY FROM THE AIR WITH KC COPTERS PREMIER HELICOPTER SERVICES ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“I

t’s like flying a magic carpet,” says pilot Johnny Rowlands, his comment delivered to our ears through headphones during some of our staff’s introductory helicopter flight over Johnson County. We may even have been passing 700 feet above our Metcalf offices at the time. Rowlands owns and operates KC Copters, a fleet of six helicopters here in Kansas City. He is known to Kansas Citians for guiding us through traffic each day from his perch above the roadways, covering breaking news and keeping us safe from tornadoes with his helicopter storm chasing. Helicopter flight is incomparable to anything except experiences only our imaginations can conjure, like the night-time dreams of flying like superman, or picturing a magic carpet ride in books and movies. An airplane is too insulated and large to offer comparison. A hang glider or parachute do not compare because they lack total control by the driver/rider. A helicopter defies gravity, moving to the will of its pilot. It is simultaneously adventurous and romantic. The cockpit is intimate. You sit inside a transparent bubble encompassed by a circumference of windows that evoke a high-tech, science fiction-y feel and provide a panoramic vista of the world around and beneath you. Liftoff and movement through the air is a little on the daring side of transportation. You feel it.

26

Johnson County Lifestyle | November 2015

I’m going to hold myself back as a writer here—I don’t want to spoil your own experience, because you must have one. I’ll stop short of describing that phenomenal view, so that you can create your own words for it when you’re up there yourself. But see this as an invitation to fall in love with our beautiful city in a whole new way, from a whole new perspective. “Fly with someone you know,” is a phrase you’ll hear at KC Copters, because the intimacy and adventure of a helicopter ride require a level of trust in your pilot and the company. KC Copters and Johnny Rowlands merit that trust. Kansas Citians know Rowlands through his decades of award-winning work with local television stations as a pilot and reporter. And he is one of the most experienced helicopter pilots around. In 40 years flying in our area, Rowlands has logged 25,000 incident-free hours. By Malcolm Gladwell’s standard (it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in a field), that makes Rowlands a master’s master at helicopter piloting. (Thus, KC Copters also runs a training school at their home base.) He is also a certified tour operator, meaning he and the company have committed to the highest standard of safety. Our helicopter ride with Rowlands at the helm was exhilarating because we knew we were in the hands of a highly experienced expert, and his friendly, engaging personality was enjoyable to be with.

CREATE YOUR MEANINGFUL EVENT

A helicopter experience makes a great holiday gift, an impressive first date or birthday milestone. KC Copters offers eight different tours of the city, or you can create your own tour or heli-adventure. They are willing to work with you to custom tailor details. Give the gift of an experience. Make an incredible memory. Do something totally unique. Call or visit their website for more details.

Enjoy a one-of-a-kind celebration of the Christmas season, complete with a champagne reception, Christmas cookies and candy canes. Their “modern day sleigh” is decked out with Christmas lights and mistletoe, and you'll hear festive Christmas Carols in your headset as you dash away for a reindeer’s view of Kansas City’s famous Plaza Lights. Plaza Lights Tours depart from either their home base at Johnson County Executive Airport in Olathe, or Wheeler Downtown Airport in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri. Johnson County flights available Sunday - Friday. Downtown departures available Friday and Saturday only.

“I want to help create a meaningful event our guests will talk about their whole lives,” says Rowlands, who certainly accomplished that for our crew. “Safety is everything, and we bury it in fun,” he says. “We are caretakers of the space between you and the ground. Our entire mission is to eliminate risk.” They do that by flying the most reliable helicopters, babying the engines so that

they are maintained at the highest standards. “What separates us from other operators is how we run our engines and take care of the aircraft.” They also hire extremely knowledgeable and experienced staff, and cultivate an environment of friendly humor, gentlemanly decorum and consummate hospitality, executed by the flawless teamwork and contagious camaraderie of KC Copters personnel.

“My standard is to treat our guests the way I want to be treated,” Rowlands says. That’s a high standard coming from this professional. At this point, can you picture yourself buckled in to the cockpit? Imagine the feel of the headphones on your head to cover the swooshing sound of the rotor above? Hear Rowlands familiar voice in your ears… “Clear. All right, here we go.”

RAISING AWARENESS OF MILITARY SUICIDE AT 13,185 FEET…MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! ARTICLE ANN E. BUTENAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

hen asked why they would climb a tall mountain, some folks may simply respond, “Because it’s there.” However, a handful of dedicated athletes who conquered Colorado’s Leadville Trail Marathon this past June had a more purposeful response: To educate the public on military suicide. To that end, they certainly had a mountain to conquer, but all they had to do was keep climbing. What began as a simple conversation over dinner with notes scribbled on the back of a napkin a year ago quickly transitioned into an inspiring idea to raise money for a cause that is near and dear to the heart of retired U.S. Army Colonel Tony Hofmann: military suicide awareness. “An average of 22 veterans a day commit suicide,” emphasizes Hofmann, who clearly understands that is 22 too many. This past June, Hofmann, who is now the director of public works for the City of Overland Park, led six active duty Army officers who were willing to compete in a grueling marathon that is not for the faint of heart. This rigorous mountain marathon challenges runners to ascend to the summit along old mining roads and trails, reaching 13,185 feet at its highest elevation--Mosquito Pass--which is nearly two miles above sea level. Although the 28

group never ran together until the actual race day, Hofmann created a 16-week virtual training program for the team. “This is the highest four-wheel drive accessible trail in the United States under normal conditions,” says Hofmann. “For our team, I created a plan to tackle the altitude based on the heart rate of the slowest person in our group. Our goal was to start and finish the race as a team.” With Hofmann taking the lead, the other team members included Capt. Heather Bain, Capt. Dan Keyser, Capt. Rick Storm, Capt. Henry Harpen, Capt. Chuck Waters and Maj. Rachel Honderd, all of whom are stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington. Acting as hosts and lead cheerleaders were Anita and Tom Schicktanz, with additional moral support from Susan and Jerry Zwack. The team agreed to begin and end the race together, completing this challenge as a unified group, and despite a few obstacles and struggles along the way, they completed the race in eight hours and four minutes, just 26 minutes under the eight and a half hour race time cut-off. This was truly a remarkable feat, and one of which Hofmann believes the team should be proud. “They may not have realized it at the time how incredible it was to get everyone, including four first-time marathoners, across the

A year of study in finish line together, but it is a big deal at that altitude,” notes Hofmann, a veteran of numerous running events, including eight Boston Marathon finishes to date. “And I also believe this event serves as a confidence builder for these future leaders.” Capt. Keyser adds, “Colonel Hofmann was a strong motivational leader for us all, and the event led to me to personally discover a core of emotions I didn’t realize I had.” Soliciting donations from various organizations and individuals, the group raised just under $8,000 for their cause, which was donated to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), a New Yorkbased non-profit that provides direct assistance to veterans. “We received significant funds from the Kansas City metro area and are very appreciative of all of the support received,” says Hofmann. With the confidence the team acquired on this mission, Hofmann’s enthusiasm is on full throttle with respect to organizing the event next year with a more ambitious agenda. In 2016, he hopes to assemble a team of eight or nine individuals, hopefully representing each branch of military service as well at least one runner to represent the public they serve. “It would be nice to have a mix of all services as well as a civilian representative to portray a united effort in a cause to raise public awareness of military suicide,” he says. “And we hope to raise even more money next year.”

Elegance Classic A TOUCH OF

Extensive remodel adds beauty and comfort to area home.

LIVING ROOM

A gathering spot for the family to watch TV, ample seating was the primary objective in this long and narrow space. After a few style changes, this hearth room is the perfect place for the entire family to comfortably relax at the end of the day. A gray flannel sectional partners perfectly with the warm gray walls while the wing chair and accompanying ottoman, donned in neutral fabric, is the go-to spot to cozy up and settle in for an evening of popcorn and movies or to just lose one’s self in the pages of a good book. The two-tone shag rug invites barefoot fun and also serves as the place for the family dog to catch up on some napping during the day. 32

etting this Overland Park home into enviable shape required a keen focus on attention to detail while simultaneously painting the bigger picture. While previously lacking in apparent form and function, the kitchen, family room and guest bathroom all currently offer an inviting and relaxing ambiance, with a decided touch of class and elegance coupled with supreme comfort and ease of use. The client was thrilled with the final product, noting not only the reliability and professionalism of Arlene Ladegaard and the design team at Design Connection, Inc., but also applauding the lasting value and superior results of this project. “The selections are classically elegant and will add beauty and comfort to my home for years to come. I look forward to completing the remaining rooms with Design Connection, Inc.’s assistance,” says the homeowner.

KITCHEN

To get the ball rolling in the kitchen, the formerly awkward island and disproportionate pantry welcomed a new faรงade. Keeping the pantry intact, only the doors were replaced and were changed to a darker color for a dramatic effect while the newly-installed kitchen cabinets were adorned with a new warm gray color accented with a coffee bean glaze that partner well with the new island. Eye-popping state-of-the-art appliances joined forces with a brilliant granite mosaic backsplash highlighted by warm gray quartz countertops. Rounding out the welcoming vibe are the transitional dining table and chairs, all boasting a dark finish that work in effortless style with the island and pantry. CONTINUED >

A TOUCH OF CLASSIC ELEGANCE

BATHROOM

No longer a room with a closed door, this powder room has been completely transformed as a crown jewel in the home, perhaps offering the best seat in the house, as the view is spectacular. The former builder-grade and uninspiring golden oak cabinet, plain mirror and standard light fixture were gutted and replaced with the newly styled dark coffee bean stained cabinet, and the new mosaic tile proves to be a harmonious partner with the tall mirror, adding a feeling of a larger and more dramatic space. The Kohler slate gray sink, single lever faucet and slate gray finish of the toilet offer a sassy and fun complement to the new wallpaper and metallic paper for the ceiling. Together, these elements provide a feeling of not only added dimension and height to the space, but also encourage an open door policy when not in use!

HEARTH ROOM

The initial request of the homeowner was to place a TV over the fireplace and then add furnishings to create a beautiful look. With careful space planning, this cozy area now comfortably seats five people by incorporating the right sized furniture made of fabrics designed for consistent use while still maintaining a great look. The linen down filled pillows add a soft touch while the wool area rug sets the overall tone for the room. Opting for a warm gray color on the walls, the fireplace was perfectly set off by the java finish to complement the kitchen.

Purging Closets, Organizing Lives Simplicana’s Eliza Cantlay transforms even the most cluttered areas in your home. ARTICLE KATHERINE BONTRAGER | PHOTOGRAPHY SUSAN MOTLEY

T

here are many things to love about our 30-year-old home in Leawood—fantastic open floor plans and ample natural light—but the master closet definitely doesn’t make the list. But thanks to limited space, there’s little room for hoarding extraneous clothing…or so I thought. Sure, I still was holding on to that vibrant sequined dress from Junior Prom. But aside from this and a few other items, surely I didn’t fare that bad. Eliza Cantlay thought otherwise. As a certified residential and small business organizer, Cantlay’s passion is de-cluttering and organizing. She’s an independent rep and organizer for The Container Store in Hawthorne Plaza and can help people build custom closet systems. Her work has been featured on the Steve Harvey Show, local news stations, and she loves speaking to groups about “being more with less.” In short? Cantlay is a dynamo and just what my house needed. Over the course of four hours, Eliza and I went through my entire closet, in what will forever be known as “The Great Purge of 2015.” Eliza pulled out clothes that haven’t seen the light of day in more than a decade. After some initial hesitation, I agreed these items were dated, so into the donate pile they went. Business suits from my Chicago days, complete with pointy lapels and the tiniest hint of shoulder pads, and sweaters that were pilling or out-ofstyle were quickly added to the stack. I tried on clothes I hadn’t worn in years, rediscovering my appreciation for some long-forgotten items, and coming to grips

38

Johnson County Lifestyle | November 2015

with the fact that some no longer fit. Meanwhile, Eliza introduced some brilliant hacks: the use of a pop-can tabs to hang coordinating pieces together and empty wine bottles to keep my boots standing straight. Parting with some items proved difficult, but the drive to purge persevered, and in all, five large plastic bags were filled with clothes, purses, and shoes that no longer fit, were too worn, out of style, or simply unused for too long. Even more startling than the amount I cleared out was the scant replacement pieces needed to round out my wardrobe. Eliza and I agreed that all I needed was one classic business suit and a pair of black dress pants. After these timeless staples were filled, I would need to work on a one-in-one-out policy for my wardrobe. As my closet—never terribly overcrowded to begin with—began to open up, I felt the tiniest glimmer of panic. But more than anything, I felt lighter, streamlined, and in control of my wardrobe. I had renewed awareness of what was in my closet and the relief that accompanies the absence of clutter. One problem that arises when Eliza comes to visit, however, is the almost immediate and insatiable need to continue the purge throughout the house. When Eliza remarked that my closet really wasn’t bad in comparison to most, my competitive nature reared its ugly head.

I marched her to our house’s proverbial wasteland: the basement. And then I took her into the dredges of the basement, our back storage area. It was difficult to force upon the door, as it came up against teetering stacks of bins filled with clothes, photos, and more. This is where we store our luggage, items long forgotten about, and more. Eliza turned to me, with something akin to a gleam in her eye. “Now THIS would be fun,” she said. And just like that, a bedroom closet cleanout morphed into the basement back room challenge. The basement purge was a different beast and one that necessitated my husband’s involvement. He wasn’t thrilled to spend the better part of a Sunday tackling the back room, but he also readily admitted that the room was out of control. We had boxes from high school, college, our days in Chicago, and more. And if we didn’t need these things nearly a decade or more later, would we ever need them? I have to give Eliza incredible credit. This is a dark, dank room. And it held some frightening finds: Stuffed animals from childhood (some, handmade by my grandmother, were kept, helpfully put in a bin labeled “Scary Childhood Toys”), my husband’s attempt at a high-school pottery class, and even more embarrassing, the mummified remains of a small mouse (and a collection of droppings). We also unearthed boxes of my old swim-team trophies. Thankfully, Eliza knows how to re-home just about anything, including all those awards. They can be re-plated and used by organizations such as the Special Olympics. We donated easily more than a dozen bags of knickknacks, an old desk, long-forgotten microwave, unused luggage, and more. Deffenbaugh Recycling inherited a frightening mound of empty boxes, which we’d held onto for no clear reason. And we trashed a healthy amount of… well, just about everything you can think of. Eliza left us with a clear to-do list (and places to turn for help): Go through boxes of old files and shred what we don’t need. Wipe an old computer tower and responsibly dispose of it. Convert old VHS tapes to DVDs. Look through bins of mementos and pare them down, deciding what truly merits keeping. And finally, sort the baby clothes and decide if any are worth consigning, giving to siblings, or donating. The room is now entirely transformed. What was once a veritable dungeon, home to hoarded items and DEAD things, is now wide open. I never realized what a huge space was hidden underneath all that junk. Some of Eliza’s clients claim her visits are life altering. I wouldn’t disagree. Remarkably, we’ve continued purging, tackling a coat closet, a linen closet, and more. There’s something incredibly refreshing about the organization that Eliza instills in a home. Talk about a simple joy from Simplicana! For more information, visit Simplicana.com.

SIMPLE CLOSET ORGANIZATION TIPS FROM SIMPLICANA

T

he number one mistake Eliza Cantlay sees is people “throwing a bunch of pretty containers at a pile of clutter and expecting this to automatically organize things. Instead, start by getting rid of as much as you can, then organize what deserves to stick around.” In fact, Eliza sees plenty of “organized hoarders” with beautiful, tidy homes and so much “stuff” that they can’t truly live in peace. So involve your partner—and your kids!—in the process of organizing, and employ some of Eliza’s top tips for clothing closets: • Try everything on. Sort out whatever doesn’t fit, looks dated, or has stains or holes. This is not a time to think, “I’ll lose weight and then this will fit…” Only keep what currently works. • Once you’ve purged, organize first by clothing style (short sleeve, long sleeve, sleeveless), then color code within style sections using rack dividers to label each style section. This is especially helpful if you tend to put things in the closet with no rhyme or reason. Doing so will help you find what you need faster. • Create a recurring reminder in your calendars to cull through your clothing every spring and fall during your “seasonal swap.” • Hang a donation bag in every closet. When you no longer want an item, place it in the bag rather than hanging it back on the rack and thinking “I’ll donate this the next time Eliza comes over.” When the bag is full, put it directly into your car—NOT sitting on the closet floor!

ark and Genny Rosenau built their beautiful Falcon Ridge home in 2000. They still love the area and their neighborhood, but they thought the house needed an update. Earlier this year, they replaced the light colored tile throughout their lower level with rich, dark hardwood floors. As is so often the case, one thing led to another and they found themselves in the midst of a big renovation. “First we decided to have dark end caps installed on our staircase in the front entry, and rod iron spindles added,” says Genny. “But, with the floor and the stairs darkened, the cabinets throughout the first floor looked too light. The domino effect had begun.” Genny remembered seeing an article about KC Wood in a Lifestyle Publication and met with them. She liked the fact that they could reface cabinets instead of replacing them. In the end, the Rosenaus refaced cabinets throughout the kitchen and in the living room, the master bathroom and a hall bath. They used a clear Alder wood and selected a dark stain to match the stair end caps. According the Genny, the KC Wood crew did a great job. “They had great ideas and thought of things we hadn’t. And the installation crew was as particular as we are! They handled every detail to our satisfaction.”

The master bath has an all new look, with refaced cabinets, new granite countertops, glass tile backsplash and dark sinks.

tep into the simple but stylish showroom of Unruh Furniture and you immediately get a sense of what this company has to offer: beautiful, handcrafted furniture with a rustic, country flair. Located in the corner of their warehouse, across the street from the Grandview water tower, visitors can view samples, but there is no inventory here. From tables to consoles, hutches and sideboards, Unruh Furniture creates each piece according to the vision and specifications of the customer. “When customers come in, we talk about the size of their room and the colors of their walls and floor,” says owner Sam Unruh. “We take that information and help them create the perfect piece for their specific space.” Unruh is definitely on to something. Demand for his furniture has steadily grown since the company officially opened its doors just over three years ago. Unruh grew up in the country south of Kansas City, and his family had a barn out back filled with scrap wood and tools. He would spend hours in there building whatever he could dream up. Little did he know a childhood passion of turning raw wood into something beautiful would eventually grow into a successful business. As a young adult, Unruh was working in a job he didn't love, making furniture in his garage for family and friends in his free time and selling a few pieces along the way. In spring 2012, he was 26, married and had his first baby on the way. But his wife convinced him to quit his job and try to make furniture full time. "I thought it was crazy to go out on my own, but she believed in me and encouraged me to dive in," Unruh explains. "I didn't have a business plan or a marketing budget, I just knew I had to make three pieces a week to pay the mortgage and buy groceries!" Within a year, Unruh hired his first employee, Robb Cortes, and moved out of his garage. He purchased an old house on Main Street in downtown Grandview, gutted it, and made it into a furniture shop. The business took off. They outgrew the house within nine months, so Unruh sold it and purchased a nearby warehouse. And he added more employees. "In January 2014, I hired Jacob and Cody, then Drew and Josiah and, by the end of the year, there were 10 of us. Needing even more space, I bought the neighboring warehouse and connected the two buildings. We’ve been here ever since.” Today, Unruh has 13 employees plus Pete, the shop dog. "When it was just me, I built about three pieces a week and now we build 20 to 30," he says. In a very short time, Unruh Furniture has become the "go to" company in Kansas City for custom, handcrafted furniture. Unruh attributes the growth to two things: the people and the product. "First, we are not a faceless, overseas assembly line,” he says. "We are young men working together in a young company. We really like what we do and we like each other.”

TABLES FOR MOMS

U

nruh Furniture believes in the importance of family, whether at home or in a work environment. Last December, they created “Tables for Moms” to provide tables to single parent families. “We believe in the power of a family meal around a family table,” says owner Sam Unruh. “It’s a time to pause and ask questions, share the day’s hurts and highlights, replenish physically and emotionally. “We believe Jesus cares greatly for single moms, and we are saying yes to Him by giving away these tables.” Unruh Furniture currently gives away two tables a week. Moms get to pick their table and the finish they want. The guys take turns delivering them so they can meet the families. To see a video about the program or to nominate yourself or another single mother to receive a table, go to UnruhFurniture.com.

The Kathmandu sideboard, one of the many sideboard designs offered by Unruh Furniture

Unruh says the work place environment resembles a family. The group loves spending time together. They play fantasy football and this summer went on a great camping trip along the Buffalo River. Their families all know each other. “It is important to me to keep that culture as we grow,” Unruh says. A high quality product is the other key factor. “Every piece is handmade from start to finish,” Unruh explains. “We use only the highest quality solid wood boards. A professional, eight-step finishing process produces an ultra-smooth, character-rich surface. And after assembly, edges and seams are fastidiously scraped and artistically chiseled to give it that one-of-a-kind, tastefully weathered appearance.” Unruh has no shortage of happy customers. “Unruh Furniture transformed mere pieces of wood into the most beautiful family table and benches imaginable,” says Michelle O’Brien of Overland Park.” “I needed a long, narrow table, a size that wasn’t available in stores,” says Wendy Neihart of Prairie Village. “Unruh Furniture built a French Country table with a rich, dark top and legs that were painted in cream and distressed slightly, and it’s beautiful! Perfect for my space.” Unruh’s vision for his company is to keep doing what they are doing, in the way they are doing it, and to continue to grow. “I love our products. I think we offer the people of Kansas City a great option for furniture.” Learn more at UnruhFurntiture.com. Mention this article and get $100 off your first custom order.

Area Company is Changing the Landscape of

NO PROJECT TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL FOR SUMMIT FLOORING AND TURF ARTICLE ELIZABETH ROSENBERGER | PHOTOGRAPHY MATTHEW WAGNER

A

ngela Grego, owner of Summit Flooring and Turf, knows what it’s like to take a gamble. During the height of the recession, she left an established career and headed for ‘greener’ pasture; literally. “My husband Kirk saw a need in the Midwest for synthetic grass, and once I met the family behind the brand of SYNLawn, it became an easy decision for me to branch into this area with synthetic lawns.” Grego’s gamble paid off. Today, Summit Flooring and Turf located at 1051 SE Century Drive in Lee’s Summit, has solidified themselves as a viable business in the community. The SYNLawn division, which is synthetic turf, is proud to be in several dog facilities around the metro area including Kennel Creek and Wayside Waifs. Working directly with several local school districts, they have SYNLawn installed on the playgrounds at many area schools. Some of the local parks and recreation departments have worked with Grego’s business for their playgrounds as well as problem areas where they have trouble growing grass. However, the dynamic aspect of Summit Flooring and Turf is the diversity and a ‘no limitation’ of where one may want synthetic grass installed. Grego says the residential market in greater Kansas City area have grasped the value of synthetic turf. She adds, “We’ve 46

Johnson County Lifestyle | November 2015

done backyard golf putting greens, dog runs, ground covering under homeowners play sets, and many a basement golf or softball/ baseball project with our synthetic turf.” Pro golfer Tom Watson, who has captured 39 PGA Tour victories, numerous titles and golfed world-wide, had SYNLawn installed at his residence in southern Johnson County. “Tom says the ball comes out just the way he wants it to, just like it’s a real green,” Grego recalls with her conversation with the golfer. In addition, Summit Flooring and Turf is the exclusive synthetic grass supplier of the Kansas City Golf Show. With regard to the indoor flooring side of the business, Grego’s showroom offers anything a consumer would desire in the flooring. Samples of hardwood, ceramic and porcelain tile, cork, luxury vinyl, and more are displayed for easy shopping. They are also one of only three suppliers in the metro area to carry the high end Karastan carpet. They offer an environment that is shopper friendly with small isles and an easy flow to the space. The store is open Monday through Saturdays and Sundays by appointment, however times vary so it is best to consult their website for times of operation. Grego is excited about the future of synthetic grass, believes it’s here to stay, and that consumers are embracing this changing landscape. She’s honored to be a part of the changing industry. “With respect to the environment, we take pride in leaving a small footprint, but lasting memories,” says Grego. For more information or to make an appointment, call 816.886.2747 or visit SummitFlooringAndTurf.com.

HOMES THAT COOK BEST-KEPT SECRETS FOR BUYING, SELLING AND CREATING A HOME WRITTEN BY LETTIANN SOUTHERLAND

W

hen Lettiann Southerland first arrived in Kansas City, she was desperately homesick. Leaving her home and family in Pennsylvania was a little more difficult than she believed it would be. Like many of us who have faced relocation away from our roots, she missed the family dinners, the wine and appetizers under the grape arbor, the laughter and the closeness of her family. Southerland, a successful realtor, looked for a way that she could turn her homesickness and memories into something that could last a lifetime. She and her brothers grew up learning about food, appreciating food and that dinner was more of an event than just another meal. So she decided to collect all of those recipes from her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins before it was too late. She set out to collect them and then share them with her family so that they could later be shared with younger members of the family. Southerland has successfully taken two very special areas of her life and combined them in a book of real estate buying and selling tips along with delicious family recipes, with the hope that they will enrich your life in your quest for a home that cooks. GrissomPorter &

Wedding Bells

PHOTOGRAPHY TAYLOR KELLEY

M

adison Sloan Grissom and Kirk Joseph Porter were married on September 5, 2015, in back yard of the bride's parents, Grant and Kathy Grissom. Pictures were a quick walk to South Lake Park, in Overland Park. The groom’s parents, Chip and Sherry Porter, traveled from Chicago for the ceremony. Guests came from all over the country to celebrate this one-of-a-kind wedding celebration. The groom is a logistics officer in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Riley and the bride is the marketing director at C.L. Hoover Opera House in Junction City. Madison’s bridesmaids included a blend of high school friends, sorority sisters and other college friends. Kirk’s groomsmen

included his brother, three brothers of the bride and three longtime friends. Having a genuine, heart-felt, authentic wedding was goal throughout the wedding planning process. From naming their specialty drinks after their cats, to writing their own vows, everything had a personal touch. They supported several local vendors including the Bali Root Band, Mi Ranchito Mexican Restaurant, The Upper Crust pie bakery, Craig Sole flowers and Taylor Kelley Photography. The bridal party’s hair was done by Morgan Zammit, and makeup by Katie Mahr. Kirk and the groomsmen sported light grey Joseph Abboud tuxes from Men's

Warehouse, with varied bow ties chosen by the groom. Madison designed her own dress and found a dressmaker on Etsy to carry out her vision. The bridesmaids were given a color by the bride and each picked their own dress. Their favorite memory includes getting the backyard "wedding ready" with lots of help from family and friends. From digging out the playground, planting hundreds of flowers, hanging thousands of lights, to building the dance floor, there was never a dull moment. Kirk and Madison left the day after the wedding to travel to Greece for a wonderful two-week honeymoon.

2015 Lexus RC 350

The Lexus RC 350 is a High-Styled Sport Coupe ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

T

he 2015 Lexus RC 350’s 306-horsepower V-6 delivers a satisfying kick in the pants, the handsomely proportioned coupe body exudes performance and the cockpit-style interior surrounds you with comfort. But the “spindle” grille that looks a bit like a scowling catfish leaves me cold. Variations on this face now appear on nearly every Lexus model in one form or another as part of the company’s design language. I presume the look is intended to appeal to a younger audience and perhaps help Lexus overcome past criticism that its cars lacked a sporty enough character. Lexus calls the RC 350’s styling “audacious,” but I think the grille disturbs the elegant lines that are carried throughout the rest of the vehicle. Would it stop me from buying one? Probably not, because so much of the car is right. There’s no doubt the RC 350 turns heads, as I found out after driving it for a week. I received several thumbs-up waves from folks on the street so perhaps I’m one of the few who thinks the grille is overdone. The long-hood, short-trunk profile is archetypical sport coupe in the way it emphasizes the power of the engine. The scoops next to the grille and the faux vents in the back fenders are obviously only for decoration but bother me less than the grille. Many of the design cues came from the out-of-production LFA supercar that had a price of $375,000. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe starts at $42,790. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shifters on the steering column. The all-wheel-drive that would be much better suited to winter climates begins at $45,025. It has a six-speed automatic. An F Sport version starts at $47,875 for rear-wheel drive and

Engine: 3.5-liter, 306-horsepower V-6 Transmission: Eight-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive Wheelbase: 107.5 inches Curb weight: 3,748 pounds Base price: $42,790 As driven: $48,450 MPG rating: 19 in the city, 28 on the highway

$49,705 for all-wheel drive. The F Sport was created for enthusiasts who want items such as variable suspension, Lexus Dynamic Handling with rear-wheel steering and variable-ratio steering. The F Sport gets a unique texture in the grille and 19-inch wheels. Crisp handling is one of the RC 350’s main attributes. While not as performance-oriented as the F Sport, it still responds as if it knows what you have in mind. The chassis platform is a mix of GS and IS sedan segments and it is stiff and tight. The ride is not overly harsh. The driver can select Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow driving modes. In many respects, the interior of the RC 350 reminded me of the IS 250 sedan. The instrument panel looks somewhat similar, as do the controls. The deep bucket seats fit me perfectly. On vehicles equipped with navigation, a clever touchpad on the center console uses tap, pinch and flick gestures to control audio, navigation and other systems. Bluetooth connectivity for telephone and audio streaming is standard. The RC’s blind-spot monitor not only alerts the driver to cars alongside but also to cars that are approaching in adjacent lanes. The rearview camera also has cross-traffic alert that is very useful for backing out of parking lot spaces. WARRANTY Four years or 50,000 miles, with a six-year, 72,000mile powertrain warranty. PRICE The base price of the test car was $42,790.Options included blind-spot monitor, rearview camera, navigation, fog lamps, parking assist, special paint and moonroof. The sticker price was $48,450.

HOME

Parting Thoughts

ARTICLE MOLLY WILLIAMS

T

o those of us who can rattle off the phone number of the first home they lived in, (Willow2-1604) the pull of memory can be powerful and bittersweet. It can shape all our future place wishes, and rarely fades with time. Childhood homes are more than our first stop on this earth. They are where we learn our names, and also who we are. That we are more than just ourselves; we are first part of our family, then our neighborhood, then the community, and hopefully eventually a larger world. My first home was a sturdy ranch in a now aging post-war subdivision. Although it seemed huge and completely familiar to

me then, when I drive by it slowly now, it looks like all the other tidy tracts of its era, indistinguishable on its block. Since my first house I have lived in two other homes of my parents, a number of dorm rooms and the sorority house in my college town; six different apartments around the city, and two houses of my own. But nothing has the pull of that first home. In the memory box of that house live the thudding of my brothers roughhousing in the hallway, the smell of my mother’s fresh baked bread, and the taste of the strawberries that escaped under the chain length fence of the sweet elderly neighbors to the rear of us. I can hear my dad whistling his way home in the garage, and the dog’s toenails scratching let me in from the backyard. Although I spent less than 10 years in that house, they were important ones, and they linger long in who I am. My husband and I moved into our current house three months before our daughter was born. (By the way, visibly pregnant is a great time to move – no one expects you to do anything remotely strenuous.) Although the current plan is to plant the for sale sign as the U-Haul pulls away for college, by then she will have spent her entire childhood in this house.

Before I am ready, she will leave this room she made hers at three days old. Its walls have made the paint progression from baby girl pink through tween green to young lady lavender. Here is the hallway where she took her first steps, the bedroom door she slammed with all her thirteen-year-old fury, and the kitchen counters she no longer needs a stool to reach when we make Christmas cookies. Outside is the rainy sidewalk where she broke her arm on a treacherous two-wheeler since corralled in the shed. The trees she climbed, the playhouse now overgrown with weeds, the block she took long thoughtful walks around. And here the front porch light, under which she may eventually kiss a boy. Wherever we are, she will always have a home, of course. I know my independent girl will make her own lovely world around her. But I am glad we will have given her what my parents gave me. Wherever she lives, she will take with her the memory of home, to be opened over and over again like a gift which never fails to surprise and cheer. Ribbons of memory will wrap her with us, sometimes triggered by nothing more than a never to be forgotten phone number.
