Reason #3 I love Austin!

I

don’t know if you realize this, but Austinites are amazing people. There’s an extra level of caring and friendliness here that you don’t see in other areas of our country. I’m not sure if it stems from good old Southern hospitality, expectations, or just a way of life, but Austinites are truly exceptional. From the moment I began living here I’ve known the people of Austin are special, but this past month I experienced this truth up close and personal in my life.

My husband became suddenly ill and was in the hospital for nine days as he battled his sickness. From the moment I had to take him to the ER, my neighbors and friends rallied around us. The support, love, meals, childcare, and prayers enveloped us completely. Never before have I experienced that amount of support. The thoughtful words and actions just kept on coming. Hubs is fully recovered now, and I recently was chatting with him about the support we were receiving. We both came to the same conclusion; had we been living in the city we grew up in, we would not have experienced the same level of support and kindness that we did here. Which brings me to... Reason #3 – Austinites are friendly, understanding, forgiving, loving, caring, hospitable people! I believe even if you are not native to Austin, you develop this act of humanity by living here. It's addictive. Why? Because it feels good! It is wonderful to both give and receive these acts of kindness. It is humanity at its finest. This issue was put together by some of these amazing Austinites I speak of. The writers stood behind me and went above and beyond to bring this issue together. The interior designers we are featuring this month provided some amazing holiday decorating tips and tricks in record timing. So I want to extend an extremely big thank you to all the Austinites surrounding me this month. I couldn’t have done it without you!

Around Town WEST LAKE HILLS RECOGNIZED The City of West Lake Hills has been awarded Scenic City Certification by the Scenic City Certification Program of Scenic Texas. Newly certified, West Lake Hills is one of 20 cities earning first-time certification or re-certification. The Scenic City Certification Program is the first in the U.S. to incorporate a comprehensive set of model standards for design and development of public roadways and public spaces into one program. The program recognizes municipalities that implement high-quality scenic standards. In granting the city its recognized certification, Scenic Texas took note of its tree protection measures, the unity of design requirements for on-premise signs, and its prohibition on digital signs. The application for Scenic City contains 71 criteria that award points, including requirements for parkland designation, landscaping, sign restrictions, litter prevention, street lighting standards, and more. The Scenic City Certification Program believes that any city’s citizens are entitled to a green, uncluttered, visually appealing place to live, work, and play – a truly Scenic City. You can learn more at ScenicCityCertification.org.

WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ACHIEVE PERFECT SCORE An impressive four Westlake High School students earned perfect scores on the American College Test (ACT) taken last spring. The following students notched a perfect 36 on the ACT, a feat less than one-tenth of one percent accomplish: Rachel Gardner, Ginger Hooper, Brandon Li and Eugene Miravete. The ACT consists of tests in English, math, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student’s composite score is the average of the four tests. Results on last spring’s ACT showed an average composite score of 26.4 by Westlake students, compared to the state average of 20.9. Westlake had 605 students participating. Compared to 27 percent statewide, 68 percent of Westlake High School students met the ACT college readiness benchmark scores in all four subject areas. By subject, college readiness 10

RAGS TO WAGS The Rags to Wags Gala is Austin Humane Society’s (AHS) largest fundraising event and provides support for thousands of homeless animals on their journey towards a forever home. The generosity of sponsors directly impacts the programs and services AHS has created to save the lives of thousands of homeless animals each year. This means that because of your support, when an animal enters the adoption program, AHS provides them quality care for both their medical health as well as their behavioral needs. As a no-kill shelter, they make a commitment to each animal in their care to provide spay/neuter surgery, a microchip, vaccinations, training, and lots of love until they ride happily off into the sunset. This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Rags to Wags Gala benefitting the Austin Humane Society on Saturday, November 21st from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Taking place at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Austin in the Zilker Ballroom, it will feature unique live and silent auctions, a mouthwatering seated dinner, and a special runway show featuring Austin’s celebrities and adorable, adoptable cats and dogs! By becoming an official Rags to Wags sponsor you will be making a direct impact on Austin’s homeless animals. Contact Angela Osborn at aosborn@austinhumanesociety.org or 512.685.0119.

- December 31, 6 p.m. - midnight. A gentle reminder for the nights that the Trail of Lights are running, the area roads will be closed as thousands visit the Trail of Lights. If you are planning to visit the Holiday Tree itself, make sure to plan around those nights. You can see the schedule at AustinTexas.gov.

THE ZILKER HOLIDAY TREE This year marks the 49th year we Austinites have been celebrating the lighting of the Zilker Holiday Tree. On December 10, 1967, the first tree was lit by Mrs. Emma Long. In subsequent years this honor has been awarded to the young winner of a city-wide tree coloring contest. The Zilker Tree stands 155 feet tall and is composed of 39 streamers, each holding 81 multicolored, 25-watt bulbs - totaling 3,309 lights. At the top of the tree, a double star measures 10 feet from point to point. The double star displays 150 frosted bulbs. This unique spiral pattern of lights was created by City of Austin electricians. At its circumference, the tree measures 380 feet. The diameter is 120 feet. The base of the tree is made up of 19 utility poles, each 14 feet tall, arranged in a circle around the Moonlight Tower. This year's 49th Zilker Holiday Tree presentation is supported by Austin Energy, and the Trail of Lights Foundation. The tree will be on display nightly from November 30

P

harmacists and owners of Martin’s Wellness Compounding Pharmacies, Jim and Dorinda Martin, are so passionate about their career in pharmacy that they married at a national pharmacy convention in Colorado Springs, Colorado, 13 years ago. “We were at a small pharmacy meeting with 35 people in attendance from eight different countries, all English-speaking. They all attended our spontaneous wedding,” says Jim. Self-professed lifelong meeting-goers, the couple met in Washington, D. C. at a pharmaceutical advocacy meeting while Jim was serving as executive director of the Texas Pharmacy Association. Out of their blended family of six children, three are in, or are planning to go into, the pharmacy business. Dorinda’s daughter, Ashley Nolan, works as a lead pharmacy compounding technician in the couple’s Lamar Plaza location. While the couple is busy owning and operating their three Austin-area pharmacies, they acknowledge the need for balance in life. Both love to travel anywhere from the local hill country to overseas. Jim reflects, “Last summer, we went to Spain and took a trip to the Holy Land." Dorinda enjoys shopping and traveling while Jim’s hobbies include golfing, fishing as well as dove and duck hunting. “I recently became interested in deer hunting only because I had the oppor-

tunity to deer hunt with a bow. It created another level of excitement,” Jim says. Hailing from Georgia and having completed his undergrad at Georgia Southern University and pharmacy school at the University of Georgia, Jim owned six pharmacies in the area. In 2000, Jim relocated from the Savannah area to Austin to fulfill his position at the Texas Pharmacy Association—a then roughly 3,000 member group with the purpose of advocating to the Texas Legislature and Congress for laws affecting pharmacists and the overall profession. Jim held the leadership position for nine years. He maintained ownership in his Georgia pharmacies but sold them to partners a couple of years after his move to Texas. Dorinda was raised in north Texas in the Denison-Sherman area where she owned four of her own pharmacies. She sold her pharmacies to a long term care pharmacy operation servicing nursing homes and began managing 70 consultants across the state of Texas as a clinical pharmacist. Dorinda desired to leave the corporate America environment and return to the entrepreneurial track. Living in Lakeway, the couple looked in a number of locations for a good compounding pharmacy location and stumbled across a 30-year-established pharmacy in Dripping Springs, Texas. The Martin’s purchased the pharmacy in 2004 and incorporated

their compounding practice into the services offered which now accounts for about 40 percent of their business. They followed this pattern, purchasing and opening two additional pharDorinda and Jim Martin macies—one on South Lamar which also serves as a specialty pharmacy for difficult-to-procure prescription drugs, and a third location in Bee Cave, Texas. The Martins didn’t always know they were to become pharmacists. “I grew up in a retail setting. My father owned a local sporting goods store in a small town in Georgia. I grew up in the store and learned business just by working in his business. I’ve always liked retail; it suits me fine. Pharmacy blends health professional and retail together,” says Jim. Jim purchased his first pharmacy in 1978 when he was 29 years old, one year shy of his professional goal of owning his own business by the time he was 30 years old. Dorinda initially aspired to be an English teacher. She began working part time in a local pharmacy and liked it so much, she pursued her pharmacy degrees. She graduated pharmacy school and later returned to school and earned her doctorate of pharmacy degree. Jim has seen this many times over the years. "People come to work for us and like it so much they pursue pharmacy as a career. I can’t tell you how many pharmacists Dorinda and I have created together." Dorinda focuses on women’s health and gives special attention to hormone balancing. According to Jim, “Helping women continues to drive Dorinda." The Martin’s work to support local businesses and appreciate the understanding from their own customers of the value in supporting their business. “This is a critical piece of why we’re in business,” Jim says. The couple loves Austin and if they didn’t have to work, their perfect day would include jumping in their two-seater Honda S2000 and traveling out into the hill country, stopping by Dorinda Martin in Israel a couple of wineries and enjoying the people in the area. “We do enjoy downtown, but a perfect day would be out in the hill country,” says Jim. “Some people our age would be moving on to retirement, but we can’t seem to figure out why or how we’d want to do that. Luckily, we’re both in good health and enjoy doing what we do."

Real Wives

Lisa with her daughters, Brooklyn and Kate

Introducing Lisa Jauregui REAL WIVES OF LAKE AUSTIN Who/What lives in your house? My husband, Paul; two daughters, Brooklyn (3) and Kate (1); and two pugs, Harley and Max. Work outside the home? I just recently returned to the workforce after being home for 3 years. I work for Radio Group as an account executive and feel so fortunate to be able to work three days per week. I didn’t know how our family was going to adjust to such change, but it has been the best experience. I’m excited to go into the office on Mondays, and Wednesdays (the end of my work week) seems to come so quickly. I still get to enjoy Thursdays and Fridays running town lake with my girls, or meeting friends for playdates. I absolutely love it and I count my lucky stars. Native Austinite or transplanted to the area? NATIVE and PROUD! Actually my parents are native Austinites as well. We seem to be a rare bunch these days. What's on the floor of your car right now? Raisins, bottle of water, a bag of MAC cosmetic containers I need to recycle for my free lipstick, Wet Ones Wipes and too much dog hair. Favorite 'pamper yourself' or splurge item? Without hesitation, a Tory Burch bag or shoes. Guiltiest food pleasure? Any combination of chocolate and peanut butter will do but Reeses Pieces would definitely be my choice as a last meal. Title of a book on your bedside table? #GIRLBOSS Best vacation ever? Our honeymoon- Maui. We have vacationed at many beaches, but nothing compares to Hawaii. The beach, the food, the people. Everyone was so friendly, so happy, you truly got a sense of a low stress lifestyle. When we vacation, we like to relax. We aren’t the couple that does a lot of adventurous tours, and we don’t have our vacations planned each day with activities. Especially 14

Lake Austin Lifestyle | November 2015

after having kids. We recently took our first kid free vacation since our youngest was born. We made a quick three-day trip to Cancun, and what we looked forward to the most was sleep! We celebrate our 10year anniversary in two years and a trip to Maui may be in the cards! Favorite date night restaurant? Jack Allens Kitchen. I love the casual atmosphere, the drinks, and the dessert! Its also very close to home so its our go to spot. We are never disappointed. Best thing about living in Austin? Running Town Lake and all the kid friendly outdoor dining options. I love that we get to raise our girls in this city. I want them to have fond memories or walking the trails, feeding the ducks, laying in Zilker park or riding the train. We truly live in the greatest city. We should all be proud to call Austin home. What do you record on the DVR? Sofia the First, Real Housewives, Flipping Out, Million Dollar Listing New York, Millionaire Matchmaker. I’m basically a Bravo Network junkie. Guilty pleasure overload. Favorite Cocktail? Jalapeno Margarita at Jack Allens Where do you wish your husband would buy your next gift? Tory Burch. Favorite sports team? It will be my daughter’s soccer team when we sign her up. I’m not a sports buff. Unique or interesting fact about your college years? I actually met my husband when we were in college. He was at UT studying radio/ television/film and I was at St. Edwards studying communications. We were both dragged out that night by friends when we each would have rather stayed home. Here we are 12 years and two kiddos later. I love how life works sometimes. Do you know a “Real Wife” we should consider for a spotlight? Email alissa.pallan@LifestylePubs.com for details.

orking with more than a dozen layers of digital images, Austin artist Leslie Kell, creates an intense feeling and a visual memory unlike any other art form with her highly expressive works. Showcasing the innovative technologies of digital art and her soaring imagination, Kell’s first solo show at the Dougherty Art Center, Mindscapes, opens November 12th in the Julia C. Butridge Gallery. Digital photo collage is the name she calls her art in which photographic images are layered into her intricate designs, then printed on canvas and framed. “Each collage may contain a dozen layers of photographs I shoot that blend natural elements, like water and birds with architectural structures,” Kell says. Some of her inspiration comes from the game Mindcraft, though Kell doesn’t play it, she still loves the visuals. Another influence is the graphic style of famed artist M. C. Escher. Kell's show consists of almost 20 original pieces with images of architectural arches and stairways, creating a fantasy environment for the viewers to visually wander through discovering creative treasures. Her work was one of multiple applications submitted to the Dougherty Art Center and when Kell learned that it was selected for a solo show, she almost cried. "Leslie Kell’s work was evaluated by a panel of jurors whose criteria included quality, content, and how the work speaks to the uniqueness of Austin," says Guiniviere Webb,

exhibits and engagement coordinator for Julia C. Butridge Gallery at the Dougherty Arts Center. The pieces are large, muscular and energize the space around them in a way that combines extravagance with playfulness. “The architectural forms and natural components in her images, create a strong sense of otherworldliness and spontaneity that will delight our audiences,” Webb says. Kell is an artist and designer with 30+ years experience, including extensive work in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Although trained traditionally in art, she found herself enjoying the contemporary medium of digital art as a vehicle of artistic expression. Although she was not always a fan. “When I started my career, I said that I would never do digital art, but now it’s exclusively my medium,” says Kell. She pioneered her technique during the last eight years and groups the artwork into collections with each piece named for a lyrical phrase from a favorite artist or song. After a piece is printed on archival canvas and finishing touches added, she works with her husband of 29 years, Michael Kell, to build a custom made frame for each one. She has won multiple awards for her artwork, and recently her original work was selected for the cover of the Georgetown Arts and Culture Guide. Kell's been honored to display artwork in the 2012, 2014 and 2015 People's Gallery at Austin City Hall.

Local designers share their holiday decorating insights. ARTICLE ALISSA PALLAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he holidays are here! Does that statement excite you to the point that you can't wait to adorn every nook and cranny of your home in festive decor? Or perhaps this simple statement puts you on edge. Are you already stressed just thinking about what you are going to have to do and how you are going to pull off decorating your tree, let alone your home? No matter which side you find yourself aligning with, our local designers are here to help you. I had the privilege of chatting with Amanda Stephenson, principal designer and owner of Design Studio 2010, Karen Burris, designer and owner of Ice Interior Design and Lenore Callahan, designer and owner of Lenore Callahan Interior Design. With decor styles and tastes varying greatly across the board, there is no one right answer to decorating. Our designers are here to help guide us in adorning our homes this holiday season. 1. WHAT ARE THE MUST HAVE PIECES OF THE SEASON?

Lake Austin Lifestyle | November 2015

Amanda - Something with glitz, glamour, and a show stopping focal point. Either in a tree topper, buffet centerpiece or table scape. I love the gold trees this year! Lenore - There are many design trends for the season. However, I think a natural approach to the holiday décor is a must. Integrating fresh holly, a real Christmas tree and garland helps to bring the season to life. These elements not only provide a beautiful back drop to your holiday parties, but also give off fragrant aromas reminding us that holidays are here! These items are not always accessible in Austin however, so getting assistance from your local florist is a must. I love working with Floral Renaissance for all my holiday decorating needs. 2. HOW CAN WE ACHIEVE A DESIGNER'S HOLIDAY LOOK IN OUR OWN HOME?

Karen - Find a common thread you can build on. If you are going with some peppermint themed ornaments weave that theme into other decorations around your house. Sprinkle it into your garlands with red, white and silver ribbon, add it to your centerpiece. That continuous thread with any theme will help pull together a professional look. Lenore - It’s also important to remember that your holiday décor should be integrated with your current style. Mis-matching holiday décor with your current home décor could become hot mess! Keep the holiday colors in line with what you currently have in the home; you don’t always have to go traditional red and green for your ornamentation. Be bold with some colorful holiday accessories in purples, pinks and whites! Amanda - Here is our cost effective how-to guide to create a personal gold tree similar to the one pictured:

DIY GOLD TREE

Blues are a strong trend this season.

Lenore Callahan Interior Design

1) Find a tree limb of interesting shape, preferably straight to attach to a foam base (to be covered with gold fabric after completed). 2) Spray paint with gold or champagne metallic paint and let dry. 3) Sponge over light mix of silver and/or white paint randomly to highlight the branch. 4) Find star and moon crystal beads (lots of online vendors for 8, 12, 16MM crystal beads) and string with gold jewelry wire and gold/ silver beads. Then tie drop from the branches. You can adapt this for table scape, mantle or console by finding a piece that lends itself to laying on its side following the same procedure above. 3. IF THERE IS ONE AREA OF THE HOME WE SHOULD FOCUS ON, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND AND WHY?

Lenore Callahan Interior Design

Amanda - Living Room or Family Room should be the focus. I feel the true focus for the holidays should be on quality time with family and friends. Keeping the focus (and brunt of the work) on the main gathering space helps set the mood for festivities, and relieves the pressure of having to decorate all areas of the home perfectly. Karen - However you choose to decorate your home, whether with natural garlands or glitz and glitter, be sure to address your main focal points. Your main living area is always a good place to focus on. Mantles are a great place to highlight, perhaps with glass vases with cut branches and lights. Your front door and entry make the first impression. Evaluate your space and decide where to focus your guests as they approach and enter your home. Remember to tie it in somehow with the theme you are working throughout your space. Centerpieces and the fixture hanging above the centerpiece are another great place to make a big wow. I love to bring the outside in. Be creative and have fun with it! 4. DECORATING YOUR HOME CAN BE STRESSFUL IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START OR WHERE TO PUT THE THINGS YOU'VE BOUGHT. HOW DO WE OVERCOME THIS AND MAKE IT FUN!?

Amanda - Start with Pinterest to get ideas of your vision. This helps refine your shopping list so you’re not like a deer in the headlights shopping for accessories. Think outside the box. Decorations can be any-

where, suspended from ceilings, beams, and architectural details to enhance the home. Show your personality as inspired and just relax and enjoy the season! Karen - There is always the option to hire a professional if you have the means to take the pressure off. I offer holiday decorating services on several levels from greenery and trees to decorations and accessories. However, not all of us can do this. If that is the case, I say you can still have fun with it! Even if you are decorating with your kid's homemade decorations and popcorn garlands you can be creative and make it wonderful. Use what you have, spray the popcorn garland with gold spray paint and wind it up inside a clear glass florist vase you have in the cabinet, do that with several and group them for a centerpiece with some of your children's ornaments. We have so many great resources online now, Pinterest and Houzz are great websites for inspiration. 5. TIPS FOR THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE?

Karen - Here are some tricks for your tree that takes some time but will give you a polished professional look: Most of us use the wire hangers, or metallic loops to hang our ornaments on the tree. This year use some florist wire in green instead to tie the ornament right up to the branch. This eliminates the messy look of those wires and loops. Fill in gaps with wide bands of wired ribbon pushed further back into the branches. Be sure you always start first with your lights and instead of winding them in circles around your tree weave them to the back of the branches and then forward again. All of these tree tips will really amp up your Christmas tree! 6. ANY FINAL REFLECTIONS?

Karen - The holidays are a great time to build memories for you and your family. What we see evokes feelings in us and can make impressions for life. Think of what memories you can build for your own family, children, even neighbors and friends that you have into your home. Take the pressure off; you can’t mess this one up! While we want our homes to be beautiful, people are truly what is most important. When I think of the holidays I think of hospitality, parties, friends, neighbors. Holiday decorating can turn our homes into our own winter wonderland that we get to enjoy once a year and share with others. November 2015 | Lake Austin Lifestyle

Let Holiday Spirit Shine CHARITY AND CHEER ABOUND AT CHRISTMAS AT THE CASWELL HOUSE ARTICLE ALISHA MCDARRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

O

nce a year the historic Daniel H. Caswell House is transformed into a shining, shimmering, crystalline paradise. Ornaments twinkle, wine flows, and tiny colored lights illuminate every bough and doorway. It’s Christmas at The Caswell House and everyone is invited. The tradition began in 1983 when the Austin Junior Forum opened up the house they purchased to designers to decorate for the holiday season. Guests bought tickets, reveled in the warmth and spirit the house created, and went home with a few new decorating ideas. Today, 33 years later, visitors can not only stand in awe of gorgeous lights and design, but enjoy a meal with friends, have a glass of wine, and begin holiday shopping, all in support of the Austin Junior Forum and their mission to serve the community. The non-profit volunteer organization supports women, children and the elderly through fundraising and community service and it has been doing so since 1969. Through Caswell House Etiquette Classes, the organization’s Teddy Bear Program, which provides stuffed Teddy Bears and Dalmatians to local fire and police departments to give to children involved in traumatic events, and service projects with local organizations like Foster Angles of Central Texas, Meals on Wheels, and The Settlement Home for Children, the women of Austin Junior Forum are making a difference in their community. But Christmas at the Caswell House is the non-profit’s largest fundraiser of the year, bringing in $1.6 million since CONTINUED >

1983 to fund its grants and programs. The gorgeous Victorian home, built at the turn of the 20th century, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark. It was purchased and fully restored by the ladies of Austin Junior Forum in 1979, thanks in part to the sale of the Austin Junior Forum’s cookbook, the sale of which is still funding projects today. During the rest of the year the house serves as the organization’s headquarters and a venue for private events, but in November it is transformed into an entirely different thing, a living organism imbibing holiday spirit into everyone who passes through its threshold. For six days from November 7-12 the home is transformed into a winter wonderland filled with ornaments, holiday décor, gifts, and gourmet food. There is unique holiday shopping, awe-inspiring displays, and events like mother-daughter tea, champagne brunch, wine tastings, and lunch. And in the spirit of Christmas, every dollar raised will be given back to the community through Austin Junior Forum’s grant program or used to restore the house so Christmas at the Caswell House can continue for years to come. “It is one of Austin's longest running holiday traditions,” says Rozlyn Beauford, the Christmas at Caswell Gift Shop Co Chair. She has chaired the event the past two years – It’s Lynnette Caswell’s job this year – and enjoys welcoming return guests into the house; guests that come back year after year and share happy memories of the event with her. Memories of afternoons spent among sparkling decorations, the jubilant hum of live music, the smell of cinnamon, and the joy brought by stockings hung by the chimney with care. “It truly is magical and something every Austinite should experience,” Beauford says. It’s proof that Christmas is coming, she says, the perfect way to usher in the holiday season. But the events don’t end in November. The house offers another fundraising event on December 6, this time with the wideeyed wonder of children in mind. Milk and Cookies with Santa offers story time, Christmas carols, crafts, and photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, again all for the good of the community. Tickets range from $15-$50 and all include admittance to the house and the opportunity to shop for clothing, jewelry and more. Some include wine, hors d'oeuvres, and even a three-course meal at any of 25 events and can be purchased at AustinJuniorForum.org. It’s about making a difference in the community, one life at a time.

Tesla Model S AN ELECTRIC CAR TO CHANGE THE WORLD ARTICLE ALISHA MCDARRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

hen most people consider electric cars, they conjure up images of awkward, angular vehicles that offer less than stellar performance, a significant lack of power and a tree hugger in the driver’s seat. But with the introduction of the Tesla Model S, these imaginings are a thing of the past. With lines so sleek and motors so powerful it could be mistaken for a sports car instead of a sedan, the Model S takes electric cars to a whole new level. It’s luxurious, fast, safe and it doesn’t require a drop of gasoline. But perhaps most importantly, it’s a pleasure to drive. The Tesla Model S is comfortable: with it’s telescoping steering wheel that can be switched from comfort to sport steering at the push of a button, smooth ride with air suspension, and low center 24

Lake Austin Lifestyle | November 2015

of gravity that makes speeding around tight curves a breeze. It goes 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, faster than a McLaren F1, making it the fastest production sedan in the world. This vehicle has lane departure warning in the form of a rumble in the steering wheel, and because there is no transmission, the pickup is extremely smooth. Drivers will also be pleased to know it has the highest safety rating in America. This is all intentional and due to the electric construction. A 7,000-cell battery sits beneath the floor of the car, creating a low center of gravity that is both impact resistant and makes the car roll proof. No engine means there’s not only a large crumple zone in the rear of the car, but also in the front where a second storage compartment is located. Frictionless and brushless motors (one

or two, standard or performance) are rated for 500,000 to a million miles and the only maintenance that must be performed is on tires, brakes, wipers and wiper fluid. That’s not to say drivers will not want upgrades, of course. Each vehicle is equipped with a capacitive 17-inch display on the dashboard that controls all of the car’s functions from Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to the panoramic sunroof and smart air suspension. This vehicle is smart because it remembers where you raised and lowered the suspension to avoid scraping potholes and driveways, and uses GPS to automatically raise and lower in the same location next time. Software updates are available over the air and make the car better over time. For example, the sonar and radar capable vehicles will soon be able to operate in full autopilot mode and drivers will be able to summon their Model S on private property. That’s right, at the push of a button your car will be able to open your garage door and meet you in the driveway. As for charging the vehicle, it can be done at home every night and at super charging stations across the country that will give drivers half a charge in about 20 minutes. These stations are

not just in major cities, they’re all over, increasing by one more almost every day. While there are still some gaps that the Model S and its 270mile range can’t quite cover yet, by next year Tesla plans to have charging stations within 150 miles of each other so that no road remains unexplored. Not bad for having just started building them three years ago. The Model S starts at just under $70,000, with the fully upgraded model, the P85D, hovering around $131,000. There is a $7,500 federal tax credit, and drivers will never have to worry about the price of gas again! If Tesla is truly out to change the world by creating a stunning car that is efficient, powerful and exceedingly fun to drive, then they’ve done it.

TWO AUSTIN MOMS STOP LICE IN THEIR TRACKS ARTICLE ALISSA PALLAN | PHOTOGRAPHY GAMMA IMAGES

W

ith school back in session the lice in Austin are doing their little happy dance. Now is the time for those little bugs to make their move! Unfortunately, lice are a common problem for children of all ages and grade levels. These parasitic insects love the human head and they prefer clean hair as a place to lay their eggs. The bugs don't jump or fly, but they do run very quickly. Lice move from person to person through head-to-head contact. Children are prone to lice because they regularly put their heads together. Parents get lice from their kids by reading to them in bed, cuddling, etc. Many teens and college students battle these annoying critters due to selfies; the close head-to-head pose is a louse’s dream-come true. To make matters worse, lice have become resistant to all over-the counter pesticides and remedies. “My boys both got lice about four years ago and of course passed it on to me,” says Jessica Evans, co-owner of Lousted. “We dealt with it for what seemed like a full month. We tried all the over-thecounter products: Rid, Lice Ice, tea tree oil, olive oil; I even used box dye on my hair thinking that there was no way lice could survive those chemicals! We finally got rid of it after weeks of combing everyday and smelling strongly of tea tree oil. But it was a constant concern, as it was going around the school all year!” Evans knew there had to be a better way to combat this prevalent problem. She learned about an FDA approved technology developed by the University of Utah, decided to license the technology and create the Lousted brand. Evans met Michelle Sunshine when she went to her home to treat Sunshine’s daughter for lice. The two hit it off instantly. “We really clicked and she already knew a lot about this treatment process," says Evans. "I left her house thinking that she would be a great person to partner with to grow this business. Lucky for me, and all the families out there with lice, she was thinking the same thing and contacted me about partnering up." Four months later the first Lousted shop in Austin opened. They now have a second location in Lakeway and are expanding to Houston later this year. “We wanted to create a place where you would like spending time while getting treated. Lousted offers TV, iPads, wifi, kids snacks and even a glass of wine or beer while you are there,” Sunshine says. Sadly for the lice in Austin, Lousted is here to stay with a treatment that is pesticide free, completed in 60 to 90 minutes and comes with a 30-day guarantee. Lousted uses an FDA-cleared device that blows hot air on the head and the lice become a distant memory. “Lice and their eggs have a very low water content. With just the right amount of airflow, temperature and the delivery method of the 26

air, it's the perfect combination to dehydrate the bugs and the eggs! Then we perform a thorough comb-out to complete the process,” says Evans. Clients leave Lousted relaxed, itch-free, and lice free. Due to Evans and Sunshine’s desire to help others combat today’s pesticide resistant lice, we can all breathe a bit easier when we are notified lice are going around the school. “It's amazing how many awesome families we come in contact with that need our help," says says Sunshine. "Being infected with head lice can be a very stressful situation. We are glad that we can help rid them of the problem and set families at ease! We love seeing the business grow. We feel like we are helping our community,” It may be the time of year for lice to move into our schools, but their little happy dance will be short-lived now that we have Lousted to turn off their music. Two Lousted locations to choose from: Austin Location Lakeway Location 3404 Kerbey Ln 1200 Lakeway Dr. Austin, TX 78703 Austin, TX 78734 Mobile treatments in your home are also available in Westlake and Lakeway. Pass the Football and Hold the Pie

WORDS VAL VALDEZ

T

hanksgiving is the one holiday in which the meal takes six weeks to plan, three days to cook and five minutes and 30 seconds to eat so everyone can watch 10-hours of football. Contrary to popular wisdom, the sole purpose of the holiday is not just about giving thanks and togetherness. It is also about football and pie. As the rest of the family prepares side dishes, sets tables and enjoys some wine, the football lovers gather around the 96-inch HDTV to get eyeball burn from instant replays and slow-mo action. After the full turkey meal has been savored, seasoned football lovers know how to make a piece of the pie last until Dallas Cowboy quarterback, Tony Romo, fumbles. That’s when some cousin says, “I want to watch Romo chokity-choke like he chokes every Thanksgiving.” Then a faithful Cowboy fan replies, “He’s 5-1 in Thanksgiving games. He does not choke.” It will take a sturdy pie to stand up to that barrage for 10 hours. And in 2012, I was the family member who received the task of getting the football pie. What a promotion that was from my normal thankless Thanksgiving job of de-boning the cranberry sauce because Aunt Josephine insisted. Then there was Uncle Jesse, who chewed with his mouth open and rooted for the Bears, only pausing when an opponent scored. But momma did not care about football or anything as long as she had the right ingredients for the meal and no one started a fight. My brother Philip had stat sheets and team rosters covering the living room floor like a bookie’s house. The usual assortment of cousins, nephews, nieces and their children wandered about our Killeen home eating, drinking and watching the games until they left or fell asleep. So, this was my family for whom I needed to buy the football pies. One day before Thanksgiving, I went to Marie Callender's restaurant and bakery, because all my family preferred their pies. I strolled

up the walkway to the front door and noticed a line of people standing outside. A young, smiling hostess greeted me asking what I wanted. When I told her a pie, her smile faded and she pointed at the line of people, “So do they.” My jaw dropped as I stared at the crowd with lifeless expressions. Then she asked, “Do you have a reservation for a pie?” Almost speechless I said, “Do I need one?” She held up a blue pad and said, “Yes, ma’am. Some of these people reserved pies weeks ago, but without a reservation you may not get a pie today.” Again, I turned to look at the pie people proudly holding their reservation slips. The hostess attempted to offer up some hope, but I just sagged in defeat and made my way past the blue slips blowing in the breeze. Do I admit my failure to the family? Could I buy pies elsewhere and try to pass them off as Marie Callender's? No. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I lived and worked in Austin and visited Killeen some weekends. So, when I got home on Thanksgiving, I would wait for someone to ask about the pies. Only then would I 'suddenly' realize I left them in my apartment. Oh no! I'm so sorry! Excommunicate me from the family! I preferred to be shamed for forgetfulness instead of the lack of pie reservation. So when the time came to tell my story, I was met with some laughs, but mostly comments about which football games to watch. I was confused and mildly disappointed that they didn’t miss the traditional pie! Why wasn't there more of an uproar? Because Thanksgiving is about togetherness, giving thanks, de-boning cranberry sauce for family and especially football, not pie! Football is one of the few things we have in common with each other, the family across the street, our bosses, pastors and celebrities. Football is part of who we are. It’s about effort, and if you fail, you are still a member of a team - a family. Football is worth sharing. It is worth being thankful for.
