BEAUTY AND THE BEAST SHERRY POLLEX'S FIGHT AGAINST CANCER ARTICLE MICHELLE KEATON BARROW

O

varian cancer accounts for roughly 3% of cancers of women but causes more deaths than any other can-

cer of the female reproductive system. The disease is difficult to detect resulting in most women being diagnosed at an advanced stage. It has a profound reoccurrence rate of 85%. In 2014, after visiting several doctors and undergoing numerous tests, Sherry Pollex was diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer. Five days later she underwent a surgery that lasted over 6 hours. Most would have given up and had a pessimistic attitude……. Not Sherry. Day one after surgery as her mom and partner, Martin Truex cried at her bedside, she asked: “What do I have to do to fight this?” She knew that her survival would depend not only on the chemo treatments but her will to live. She chose to say that she received the “gift of cancer” instead of letting it consume her life. She endured her months of chemo sessions with a positive, bullish attitude. She refused to give cancer any of her power. Although exhausted and barely able to eat, Sherry pushed herself forward each day with the goal of healing herself. She was literally her own motivation, healing herself from within. “Your perspective on life changes after you look death in the face. The sky is bluer, the sun shines brighter and the simple things in life such as the flight of a butterfly become amazing!” When asked why give back? Sherry responded that both she and Martin grew up in supportive households causing them to want to help in making the world become a better place. By being inspirational and good examples, they realize that they are causing a ripple effect. Their philanthropic ventures cause others to do the same.

“Feel strong. Feel beautiful. Feel Healthy. Surviving ovarian cancer with grace”

Sherry and Martin established the Martin Truex Foundation in 2007 to aid pediatric cancer patients. In 2015 the foundation was rebranded to support underfunded initiatives specific to ovarian and childhood cancers. Creative fundraisers are conduits to raise funds. Catwalk for a Cause in the spring uses NASCAR drivers, NASCAR driver spouses and children that have been challenged with a cancer diagnosis as models in a runway show. A Southern Setting -Farm to Table in the fall features a festive outdoor venue with a private chef. In 2016 Sherry launched SherryStrong.org, a website dedicated to empowering women to know their bodies and recognize the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Powerful information is provided on the site that encourages holistic, integrative practices after a diagnosis and treatment. “Feel strong. Feel beautiful. Feel Healthy. Surviving ovarian cancer with grace” is prominently displayed on the homepage along with a photo of Sherry, the epitome of grace under pressure.
