nspired by Community. The tagline of Lifestyle Publications, our parent company, and what makes Lake Austin Lifestyle rooted to all of you. We hear you, West Lake, Rollingwood, Barton Creek, River Place, Rob Roy, Davenport and Senna Hills. Unfortunately this name would have been way too long for us! So, we thought about the common connector amongst all these neighborhoods and we were led straight to Lake Austin. My name is Amber Groce and I am your Editor, and Cherice Engel is your Publisher. We are so excited to bring you this brand new publication full of happenings right here in our community. Our goal through this monthly magazine is to introduce you to your neighbors, local businesses, recreational activities and local events. This magazine is here to serve as your community bulletin board. Cherice and I want to thank you for welcoming us into your home, and we look forward to the year ahead as we bring you the best of the Lake Austin area. May is our green issue, which is a perfect place to begin this journey considering our city's environmental responsibility. A few tid bits about Cherice: "I love my ever-growing family, hiking River Place, wakeboarding on Lake Austin, paddle boarding, dining out, hot tea, wine and IPA. I also love connecting with people in my community - so let's hang out sometime soon." A few tid bits about Amber: "I'm a puppy-mom to a seven-year-old rescue and we enjoy going to the Greenbelt and Barton Springs. I love to read, explore my community (I'm always looking for the best kept secret) and wine. I enjoy traveling and exploring new cities and cultures." This magazine is yours. We would love to hear from you. Send us your thoughts, photos, ideas and announcements. We sincerely hope that you enjoy this first issue and we look forward to seeing you around town.

The mission of the Angel House organization is to bring abandoned children from the slums to safety and into the loving arms of caretakers that will educate, love and raise them to become future leaders in their generation. The home in Medchal will house a dozen children. To learn more, visit AngelHouse.me.

Sage & Sweetgrass Wellness Spa will be offering exclusive specials only available on my mobile app DocWithMe. Dr. Alina Sholar, plastic surgeon and owner of Sage & Sweetgrass Wellness Spa, says, “We decided that we needed an innovative and accessible way to connect with our clients and patients. We believe that patients should be active participants in their health and wellness, and that this should happen seamlessly and automatically. Using an easy to use mobile application (an app) gives us the opportunity to share information that is relevant to our patients and clients. This allows new avenues of communication with previous patients, but also is a great way to reach potential clients and serve them in a new way.”

Artist’s Palette ARTICLE AMBER BOCE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE AUSTIN AREA?

I'd lived in Chicago for about 15 years following grad school and had gone to UT for undergrad. I was invited to do a sabbatical replacement for the Chair of the Department at Southwestern University in Georgetown, and so was reminded of how much I liked Austin from my undergraduate years here. I started looking for property to build a home and studio on, and found just the right old farmland property in the hills of Westlake. So I began to design and was the builder on my studio and residence here. DESCRIBE YOUR ART AND WHAT INSPIRES YOU.

My work has many layers. The influence of Southern drama (the character and charm of the South, not unlike what you find in writing by many Southern authors) and the vernacular or regional influences from particular areas of Texas and other places that I find to spark my imagination (patterns that are prevalent in many of the folk and textile arts of the south-quilts, wallpapers, crafts-limitless resources this way). My attitudes about art and painting are from a very personal perspective (should art embrace the attitude of "decoration" while also conveying the drama of the many contrasts that we find in life). Influences of nature, forces of nature, and admittedly some sentiment towards all of the above, but hopefully not without the strength of expression from a deeper level is another theme behind my work.

Introducing the Art of Nina Beall WHERE DID YOU STUDY ART?

I received my undergraduate-BFA from The University of Texas at Austin, and MFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. WHERE CAN PEOPLE VIEW YOUR ART?

"The Studio" is located at 1706 River Hills Rd. and is open to the public by appointment. 512.263.0219 WHEN IS YOUR NEXT SHOWING OR EXHIBIT?

Right now, I am in a group show at Laura's Library in Westlake with a group of neighborhood artists, artisans and crafters. A larger body of my work is of course available at "The Studio." WHERE HAVE YOU SHOWN YOUR WORK IN THE PAST, AND ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR AWARDS, EXHIBITS OR COLLECTIONS THAT YOUR WORK IS IN THAT YOU ARE PROUD OF?

I've shown mostly in the Chicago and New York galleries, having built somewhat of a reputation there and elsewhere around the country. To name just a few: The Art Institute of Chicago, Frumkin Gallery in Chicago, and Rosenfield Gallery in Chicago. In New York, I’ve shown at Monique Knowlton Gallery and Graham Modern Gallery. In Philadelphia, I’ve shown at Cadme Gallery and Marion Locke Gallery. My work has been shown and is included in the permanent collections of San Antonio Museum of Art, A&M University's Forsythe Gallery, McNey Museum, Southeast Texas Museum, University of Southern Illinois, Coca-Cola's, Prudential's, and Sandoz's Permanent Corporate Collections, to name a few. I am probably most honored to have been recipient of several "National Endowment for the Arts" grants and awards. 12

Family Day Out Mixing Sustainability with Beautiful Gardens ARTICLE AMBER GROCE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY LADY BIRD JOHNSON WILDFLOWER CENTER

D

espite our looming drought, Austin is home to several gardens including Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in southwest Austin. Boasting 279 acres of gardens, meadows and hiking trails and includes nearly 80 acres of research plots, prides itself with sustainable practices in both its buildings and landscapes. The cultivated wildflower meadows and gardens comprise 12 acres with about 650 species of native Texas plants and the center is one of only three gardens nationally emphasizing native plants. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is not just about a fun day out with the family. It conducts research on native plant conservation and the benefits of wildflowers and other native plants in settings such as green roofs and highway roadsides. With about one in five plant species in the United States is in danger of extinction, this research is critical in keeping our Earth green. Another mission of the center is to connect children

16

Lake Austin Lifestyle | May 2015

to nature through national and regional educational initiatives. “Our founder Lady Bird Johnson was always concerned about protecting our natural heritage and preserving native plants that give life to animals that rely on them,” says Andrea DeLong-Amaya, the horticulture director at the center. “Over the years, research in conservation, restoration and horticulture have led us to a deeper understanding of the important role native plants play in creating healthy landscapes. Water is a limited resource and using plants that are best adapted to our region is a vital way to garden responsibly. We also hope to guide gardeners to use native plants to their benefit by reducing the need for extra fertilizers and soil amendments. This can reduce pollution and added transportation costs. We want to be a resource for people who strive to do what they can to ensure that future generations have clean air and water

and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and all the riches it brings.” Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is home to the Central Gardens, including the ever-so-popular Butterfly Garden, and the newly opened Family Garden, the only native plant garden developed for families in Central Texas. The Luci and Ian Family Garden was designed to meet the highest sustainability standards of the Sustainable Sites Initiative program and recently became one of 12 certified sustainable landscapes in the SITES program. The Robb Family Pavilion has a metal roof and gutters that connect up to a cistern, and the rainwater is reused in the gardens. Another aspect of sustainability in that area is the rain gardens, which are sunken gardens that capture stormwater so it is retained on site and has pollutants filtered out of the water as it moves through the soil. The mulches made of recycled glass or other sustainable materials.

Now for the fun part of the Family Garden: playtime! With over a dozen spaces and interactive activities, the kids (and sometimes parents) are sure to have a fun-filled day. Run a race, fly a kite or play in the grass at the Ellen Clarke Temple Play Lawn. Find your way through the Ann and Roy Butler Metamorphosis Maze and keep an eye out for the frog sculptures made by a local artists. At the Jeff Wilson Memorial Watering Holes, collect water from the hand pump and watch as it flows slowly or quickly through the holes in these limestone boulders. Use your hands and feet to splash in Dinosaur Creek, which uses natural, non-potable, non-chlorinated water and will develop into a habitat for fish, frogs, turtles and aquatic invertebrates. Peek inside the Hill Country Grotto, built from the limestone rocks and boulders found on property, and cool down with the waterfall. Other areas of the Family Garden include Hopscotch Way, Diana Poteat Hobby Dry Creek Overlook, Mays Family Nature’s Spiral, Alice C. Tyler Stumpery, Bette and Nash Castro Giant Birds’ Nest, Wildlife Blind and Robb Family Pavilion. “The Metamorphosis Maze is one of my favorite features in the garden,” DeLong-Amaya says. “As a true puzzle maze, it has many layers of ideas demonstrated by the native shrubs we’ve used here. The concept of metamorphosis is depicted by the life cycle of a frog with sculptures of adult frogs at each entrance. The next level of the maze uses sculptures of adult frogs laying eggs, the next ring has eggs hatching into tadpoles and finally in the center, as a reward for solving the puzzle, you get an adult frog again. And it is large enough to sit on! I also think of the Metamorphosis Maze as a metaphor for life. As we ramble through our journey, we sometimes take wrong turns and have to backtrack before we reach our goal. And, for the gardeners in the bunch, we will keep the plants sheared as a demonstration of natives that are suitable for hedges.” Before you leave for the center, make sure to check out their website for guided questions and self-guided activities to make the most out of your visit to Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Don’t forget your camera.

Home Matters

Window Shopping GOING GREEN IN YOUR HOME – STARTING WITH YOUR WINDOWS ARTICLE AMBER GROCE

“G

reening” has become a way of life in Austin, especially regarding your home. While solar panels and energy efficient lights are a good way to do this, you can start at the beginning where the product itself is recycled. Windows, skylights and exterior doors can be some of your home's most attractive features and accents the rest of the landscape, so why not choose a product that ecologically mindful and built with quality. “Amazing Siding and Windows decided to make a move away from vinyl windows when we saw issues with vinyl failing even from high-end window companies,” says Stephen Warrington, owner of Amazing Siding and Windows. “We recognized that the future in replace-

ment windows was the fiberglass frame which is eight times stronger than vinyl. The Infinity from Marvin replacement window was an easy move since Marvin has become a leader in this fiberglass technology.” Marvin windows, sold exclusively in Austin at Amazing Siding and Windows, not only produces environmentally-friendly windows, they believe in and encourage corporate responsibility. All Marvin windows and doors are designed for exceptional energy efficiency, performance and thermal efficiency and built with sustainability in mind. Marvin products are engineered to create minimal wood scrap and the major components of Marvin products are reusable or recyclable.

LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER WHAT SHE SAID THEN, WHAT WE’RE SAYING NOW EDITED BY ANN IMIG

I

n 2010, Ann Imig organized a live-staged reading event in Madison, WI, to bring together her community—mothers and non-mothers alike—and provide a forum for a diversity of voices to share their personal stories. These readers spoke honestly and openly about motherhood, family, childhood, and parenting. And so, the Listen to Your Mother movement was born. This one event quickly grew into an annual national performance sensation, with nearly 40 nationwide events scheduled for May 2015. Now, in LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER: What She Said Then, What We’re Saying Now Imig brings to the page what she helped bring to the stage five years ago with this collection of 56 candid, funny, poignant, unexpected and soul-bearing essays. The contributors to this powerful anthology bravely share their stories, ranging from hilarious to heartbreaking, showcasing the experiences of ordinary people from a broad spectrum of racial, gender, and age backgrounds. With a roster of writers that includes first time essayists and New York Times-bestselling authors, LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER reflects our diverse contemporary lifestyles and rapidly changing definitions of motherhood. While some are paeans to the mother we might not have appreciated as children, unaware then of how hard a task motherhood can be, others fully embrace the power of their family matriarchs. A wom-

an faces the painful truth that there is nothing she can do to save her mentally ill, homeless mother from the streets. A military mom raises her baby alone when her husband is deployed to the Middle East. A mom tries to hold it together while battling cancer. One mother recounts the elation and ultimate heartbreak of an unplanned pregnancy in middle age, while another shares the years of sadness that accompanied her decision to give her baby up for adoption. LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER delivers the collective voice of mothers among us and celebrates less conventional arrangements. Mothers write of their personal struggles in the day-to-day job of mothering, of trying to raise a child who is not spoiled, of navigating single motherhood after divorce or death, and of dreading the body image issues that will one day inevitably undermine a young daughter’s confidence. “Listen to Your Mother. It’s a cliché, it’s the sixth commandment, and it’s an imperative for curbing children young and old from poor life choices like jaywalking and sixty-four ounce sodas,” Imig writes.

M OO R S S NMEN A TAL EDUCATION IN THE CL

ARTICLE JOE CONSTANTINO AND JILL GROTZINGER

R

ecently, the green schools movement received a boost with the announcement of the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools. Building off the model of National Blue Ribbon Schools, these schools were recognized for taking a comprehensive approach to greening their schools, making strides to reduce their schools’ environmental impact, improve health, and provide education geared toward the sustainability challenges of the 21st century. A total of 78 schools from around the nation were awarded the firsttime ever Green Ribbon status in Washington, DC this past June. Best defined, environmental education (EE) is a learning process that increases awareness and knowledge about the environment and the associated challenges. EE teaches people how to explore and investigate their environment. It also helps them develop the necessary skills and knowledge from different disciplines to make informed decisions and take action concerning how to take care of the environment.EE is an ideal way to integrate classroom curricula with subjects such as earth science, biology, chemistry, social studies, art, math, English language arts, writing and the fine arts. There are skeptics in regards to the importance or the role of environmental education in our schools; citing that it is just a “feel good” initiative. However, research has shown the benefits of EE are significant and extend beyond the obvious. In fact, they transform the entire learning community. Some of those benefits include: ACADEMICS – Integrating EE into the curriculum has been found to improve reading, science, social studies, and math scores. Students are able to transfer their knowledge from familiar to unfamiliar contexts. CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS – EE builds skills such as questioning, investigating, forming hypotheses, interpreting data, analyzing, 20

Lake Austin Lifestyle | May 2015

formulating conclusions, and solving problems - all key to higher level thinking and scientific inquiry. LEADERSHIP SKILLS – The hands-on, project-based learning common to EE fosters leadership qualities -enhancing skills such as working in teams, solving real-world problems, taking the long-view, connecting with the community, making a difference, and looking at the long-term implications. ENTHUSIASTIC STUDENTS – Engaging students in diverse outdoor environments provides dynamic learning experiences for young people and makes it exciting and relevant to their lives. INNOVATIVE TEACHERS – Educators from EE-friendly schools are more excited about teaching, bring more innovative instructional strategies into the classroom, and take more leadership in positive school change. SELF-DIRECTED LEARNERS – EE often utilizes project-based learning which results in young people having a better understanding of what they learn, retaining the knowledge longer, and taking charge of their own learning. LIFE-LONG LEARNERS – EE’s emphasis on the living world and hands-on activities makes subjects often viewed as boring more exciting, and they see the connections while making a difference. This interest and passion for learning translates into a life-long curiosity for exploration and understanding. While a chosen few have been recognized for their efforts to be Green Ribbon Schools, we know that there are many other schools who are working hard to be green. These schools need and deserve the support of their surrounding communities. This is a win-win for everyone, so we urge you to lend your time and expertise to your local school to grow and nurture its green roots.

design and gemology wasn’t always what Mary Weber Jewelry of Five Star Jewelry Brokers and Gemologists thought she would be doing with her life. In fact, she studied pre-dentistry in college and started work as a dental assistant during school. It was there that her passion for jewelry design was born. Weber admits it was a strange place to discover the craft. Most jewelry designers and store owners adopt the trade because it is a family business, but it was in the dental lab that Weber was introduced. The dentist made jewelry as a hobby in the space designed for pouring gold crowns and Weber was intrigued to say the least. It wasn’t long before she changed her major, procured a job at a jewelry design and manufacturing firm and never looked back. Now she has 25 years of experience, has owned several stores in the Westlake area since 1994, her most recent opening in 2010, and knows that it’s what she’s meant to do. “I really like being creative. I like being able to do something different every day,” Weber says. Of course, selling jewelry isn’t all that’s in her job description; she designs, buys, sells and studies it in a way that is often lost on large chain jewelry stores. For starters, she buys directly from diamond cutters and has a network of over 100 cutters and brokers to ensure she can always find the perfect stone at the perfect price for her customers. She’s also a graduate gemologist and certified senior appraiser and attends trainings every year to ensure she is always up to date on the science and trends behind the stones she sells. 22

But it is her expertise in custom design that truly sets Weber and Five Star Jewelry apart in Austin. Customers come in with a photo or a sketch and an idea of the perfect engagement ring or anniversary gift, and Weber takes them from “anything is possible” to the piece of their dreams, one that perfectly expresses their taste. She does it by using CAD to design the ring in 3D, even having it printed in wax using a 3D printer if necessary, and supplying her customers with a selection of stones so they can pick the ideal one. She recently ordered not one, but four Padparadscha sapphires, a valuable, pinkish-peach stone, so a customer could take her pick and Weber could create something the wearer would be thrilled with. “It’s always so rewarding,” Weber says. “I really enjoy being part of that process.” Especially when she can swoop in and save the day. Not long ago Weber began design work on new wedding bands and an engagement ring for a couple who thought their dog had eaten the jewelry. After the CAD designs were finished but before the jewelry making began, the rings were found, but Weber had offered such stunning new pieces they couldn’t walk away. “They loved the design so much that they decided to take the diamonds out of the ring and have the platinum melted down to make the new wedding bands. They loved that we were able to use the original diamonds and gemstones since they had so much sentimental value,” Weber says.

Of course, Five Star Jewelry carries other designers’ pieces, like Tacori and Gabriel & Co. She also performs all the tasks a large jewelry store would, like appraisals, repairs and stone replacement, but with a personal touch that keeps customers coming back, even through generations. She hand-delivered three rings on Valentine’s Day, makes after-hours appointments, and listens more than she talks, all to ensure her customers have an experience, and an original piece, they wouldn’t trade for the world. “I want to be your personal jeweler,” Weber says. And she feels like when she has made someone’s dream ring a reality, when she can provide them with a stone they’ve searched for everywhere, when she can repurpose a family heirloom into something beautiful and timeless, then she has truly done her job, creating a magnificent piece that is a perfect expression of the man or woman who will cherish it for years to come.

Driver’s Notebook

Toyota Prius THE GRANDDADDY OF HYBRIDS

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

W

henever I drive a hybrid such as the 2015 Toyota Prius I’m initially tempted to tiptoe on the throttle and creep away from stop signs in an effort to squeeze the most miles out of a gallon of gas. While it’s fun to see how little fuel I can use, driving slowly gets old and I soon resume normal driving. That resulted in an average of 41 miles per gallon during a week of cold weather. Even with gasoline at record lows that’s still enticing. In 14 years, with sales of more than 1.5 million, the Toyota Prius hybrid has been so successful that it is almost a brand unto itself. Today there are four models: Prius, Prius C, Prius V and a plug-in Prius. The uniquely shaped Prius connotes thrift, efficiency and innovation. It is available in five trim levels with prices starting at $24,200 and topping out at $30,005 for the Prius Five. That is the model I drove from Toyota’s press fleet, and it was equipped with dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system that can apply the brakes in certain situations, lane-keeping assist, head-up display, navigation, safety connect and a JBL audio system. Safety connect includes automatic crash notification and an emergency assistance call button. The Prius is powered by a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder, Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine that has 98 horsepower. Combined with a 60kW electric motor, the total output is 134 horsepower. The car can run on the engine alone or battery alone but it generally uses a combination of the two. There are four drive modes: Normal, Power, Eco and EV. The car can be driven on electricity alone for a mile in EV 24

Lake Austin Lifestyle | May 2015

mode. Eco adjusts throttle input and climate control for maximum mileage. Power is as the name suggests. I used Normal. The use of an electric water pump and electric power steering help save fuel, and exhaust heat is used to warm the engine coolant during cold starts. Regenerative braking recaptures electrical energy during braking. The Prius Three and Four models can be equipped with a moonroof that has solar panels over the rear seat area. The solar panels power a ventilation system that lowers the car’s interior temperature when parked. Because of low-rolling-resistance tires, and perhaps the weight of the batteries, I note that the Prius ride feels firm and often seems to lack compliance, as if the tires are over inflated. It is not objectionable, but noticeable. The Prius is 14 inches shorter than a Camry but its interior volume is just 3 cubic-feet less. Rear-seat headroom is actually greater than that of a Toyota Corolla and the rear seat folds down to expand the cargo space. A high center console splits the front seats and contains a small, electronic gear selector. The speedometer is situated at the top center of the instrument panel. In a nod to reducing driver distraction, the steering wheel switches are equipped with touch sensors. When touched, they show a duplicate image of the control on the instrument panel in the driver’s line of sight.

PRICE: The base price of the test vehicle

was $30,005. The optional advanced technology package included dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system that can apply the brakes in certain situations, lane-keeping assist, head-up display, navigation, safety connect and the JBL audio system. The sticker price was $35,150. WARRANTY: Three years or 36,000 miles

with a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The hybrid components are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. POINT: The Prius has a small footprint with

room for four. The hybrid system operates seamlessly and sips fuel. COUNTERPOINT: The high center console

feels a bit intrusive, the ride lacks compliance and well-equipped models cost almost as much as an Avalon XLE.

Parting Thoughts

The $70 Tomato WORDS DEBRA LAIZURE

I

come from a long line of green thumbed people. Both sets of my grandparents had large vegetable gardens. My paternal grandmother always had multiple varieties of African Violets decorating her living room and even grew rare Lady's-slipper orchids outside her front door. Gosh, I wish I could be like them. Unlike my talented relatives, my knack for growing things is limited to sweet potato vine and daylilies. Regardless, I revel in this time of year. April is the month that farmers' markets start sprouting up all over town, and herb festivals and home and garden shows fill up our weekends. The flats of colorful flowers call to me and I simply can't resist. In turn, my husband gets equally excited and starts sharpening the lawn mower blades and getting extra line for the grass trimmer. One of my favorite things to do is "pretend" that I can grow things. Usually this involves throwing on a Vegan-approved cotton shirt, Birkenstocks and floppy hat, and casually walking through the streets of the afore mentioned herb festival and conversing with the farmers about their leafy goodies. I know some gardening lingo and have the most wonderful time delving into subjects on composting and natural fertilizers.

34

Lake Austin Lifestyle | May 2015

The farmers then pack up an assortment of their young, nurtured seedlings and hand them over to me, not realizing their green babies are on their way to death row. Once home, the exhaustion from the day sets in and the plants stay on my patio table rather than in the rich, f luffy potting soil resting in bags, also on the patio table. Sadly, the "I'll plant tomorrow" thoughts run through my head as I run off to another herb festival. If for some reason the plants make it into the soil and I actually remember to water them, I watch with anticipation for the strawberries, tomatoes and cantaloupes to emerge. Typically, the plants bloom but bear no fruit or the birds gobble up the one-and-only miniature melon. Over the years I have learned to keep things simple and have achieved a respectable looking flower bed containing mostly perennials. But I still can't hold myself back when it comes to buying a garden full of tomato plants and herbs. I expect to harvest a $70 tomato and $30 bunch of dill, but I am forever optimistic. My daylilies are already pushing up through the ground to give me hope that this year will be different.
