hose who know me well know that I am a Midwestern suburban girl, through and through. When I visit other parts of the country and get a whiff of the eccentricities that make for regional differences, I’m only reminded that I crave the Midwestern values on which I was raised. And when I visit friends or family who live in rural areas or in the hub of an urban metropolis, I’m reminded yet again that for me, while they are great places to visit, I’d only ever choose to live in the suburbs. Whether it’s a hospital, a craft store, the gym where I work out, or the grocery store I seem to visit three times a week, I love having everything I need on a regular basis within a short, often-less-than-10-minute drive. I appreciate the structure and value that our local home owner’s associations bring to a neighborhood. While I appreciate that others do, I don’t crave the privacy of acreage, and I can’t imagine living in a place where I’d need to wait for an elevator to take me up to my home or down to my car several times a day. How blessed we are to live in a community where folks value their homes and take pride in maintaining their property. They are big investments, these homes of ours. I hope yours brings you as much joy as I receive from mine.

Using expertise in story structure, diffusion of innovation and behavioral change, Overflow specializes in launching strategic initiatives, speaker development, and propelling social causes in healthcare, government and education. “There is an overflow of great ideas. Q u e s t i o n :Â
Question: We have lived in our home for 30 years and the kitchen cabinets are worn and dated. I love the look of white cabinets that are popular now, but will they date my kitchen in a few years? ANSWER: We are asked this question frequently.
White cabinets are like a breath of fresh air, but many older homes will not accept the look of the white cabinets without spending a substantial amount of money to update the rest of the home, especially in the new open floor plans. Rest assured whatever you do today will inevitably look dated 20 years from now. Take your new, fresh ideas and brighten up your home! In this featured home, white kitchen cabinets were the perfect solution for a fresh new look. This 35-year-old home was designed with golden oak cabinets and trim throughout. Our client loved the idea of an open and bright kitchen with all new cabinets and appliances, quartz countertops and a very large entertaining island. The timeless grey walls paired with the white cabinets and the glass tiles in grey, white and charcoal will keep this kitchen’s design current for many years to come. In this instance, the remainder of the home was renovated to harmonize with the new California Contemporary-inspired kitchen. For a unified design, we carried the white trim from the kitchen throughout the home, further emphasizing the seamless look and open feel our client desired. DESIGN TIP: If your kitchen does not work well with all-white cabinets, stain your perimeter cabinets in
a dark stain and treat yourself to a new island with white painted cabinets and a complimentary countertop. The contrast of the crisp white island cabinets against the surrounding darker woods will add depth and give a renewed style to your dated kitchen. Done right, white cabinets are classic and always in style. May 2016 | Leawood Lifestyle

BIO-IDENTICAL
Hormone Pellet Therapy
I
n women hormonal imbalance may cause symptoms such as night sweat, sleeplessness, lack of energy, forgetfulness, anxiety, depression and lack of libido. Bio-identical hormone therapy seeks to return women to natural hormone balance. Hormone pellet dosage is individualized for every woman. At his south Kansas City office Dr. Michael Barnthouse personally places the hormone pellets under the skin using a mild local anesthetic. For most women the benefits of pellet therapy will last 4 to 6 months or longer. Bio-Identical hormones are natural plant derived compounds that have the same molecular structure as those made by the human body. Unlike synthetic hormones, our bodies can readily recognize and metabolize them. Bio-identical pellets have been used successfully by patients throughout Europe, Japan and the United States since the 1930s. Michael Barnthouse, M.D. is a certified SottoPelle provider. SottoPelle bio-identical hormones are made by compressing natural bio-identical hormones into very small pellets. All ingredients are extracted from natural plants and made into a usable form. All ingredients in the pellets are FDA approved and regulated. SottoPelle uses only the highest grade of natural hormones that are all completely bio-identical. No binding agents or chemicals are used in the pellet production process that are not 100 percent

natural bio-identical making them the purest bio-identical pellets on the market. SottoPelle bio-identical pellets are analyzed by an independent lab for quality. SottoPelle bio-identical hormone therapy is unique in that it allows for a consistent absorption of hormone therapy on a continuous basis. Hormones are released in the right amount to maintain normal hormonal physiology based on the demands of your body at a particular time. The pellets reproduce steady and consistent serum levels and therefore are biologically available whenever needed. Bio-identical hormone therapy is found to be both effective and safe. Side effects are found to be rare. If any side effects do occur, changes can be made with subsequent pellet insertions. By balancing your hormones we can help you achieve a level of well-being you haven't felt in ages. Along with hormone balance, proper nutrition, staying active both mentally and physically and maintaining strong relationships are all vital to your total health. TWO PROBLEMS, ONE SOLUTION HOW SLEEPYHEAD BEDS HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT AND GIVES KIDS A BED OF THEIR OWN ARTICLE LISA ALLEN | PHOTOGRAPHY ALEXIS COOK
O
ne in 42. Some statistics show that’s how many kids will sleep somewhere other than their own bed tonight in the Kansas City metro area. Every year, approximately 20 million mattresses and box springs—nearly 50,000 every day -- are dumped in American landfills. Each takes up about 23 cubic square feet and, because most mattresses and box springs are built from a combination of organic and non-organic materials, the environmental impact is complicated at best. The organic materials like cotton and wood might decompose eventually but the synthetic materials may never break down, and the chemicals in each mattress and box spring add another layer of concern: bleaches, dyes, fungicides, flame retardants, and petrochemicals leach into the ground. Enter Sleepyhead Beds, a non-profit, charitable organization founded in 2010 by Monica Starr. Starr worked with foster youth families and saw first-hand the need for beds among area children and started Sleepyhead Beds with two part-time employees, a truck, and a small warehouse space. In its first year, Sleepyhead Beds provided 1,200 beds to area children. Now Executive Director Sam Cook leads a team that includes 10 volunteer board members. In 2015, more than 2,000 children and parents received a bed and more than 150 tons of waste was diverted from landfills. “The issues we focus on—kids who are sleeping on the floor or a couch and the unnecessary waste in landfills—are issues that will continue to grow,” says Cook. “The environmental impact is significant and detrimental, and there’s no reason for CONTINUED > that to happen. The solution is easy.”

Giving Back
(CON TI N U ED)
That solution is to pick up gently used beds from around the metro—for a nominal fee—then sanitize and clean them at Sleepyhead Bed’s new, larger warehouse before giving them to families on the organization’s waiting list. The process usually takes less than a month and scheduling can be done online. Donations come from individuals and from groups such as universities and hotels. Cook says the organization has grown rapidly in the past three years and is focused on continued growth. “We say yes, then figure out the logistics,” says Cook. Volunteers fuel the organization. “We have companies, youth groups and individuals who volunteer,” says Cook. “And that continues to be our biggest need—people who will give their time so that kids can sleep in their own bed. We had an 8th grade class from a Catholic school volunteer, and they were able to help 93 kids get a bed.” Sleepyhead Beds doesn’t require an application. Instead, it runs on referral, both self-referral and help from social workers and teachers. There are currently 1,825 families on the organization’s wait list; 1,500 of those are self-referrals, and 4,000 are kids. To date, the organization has delivered more than 4,000 beds to area children—that’s the equivalent of three football fields worth of beds that have been saved from landfills. Each bed is cleaned with SteriFab, a biodegradable sanitizer that is effective against fungus, mold, mildew, bed bugs, dust mites, fleas, ticks, likes, and other pests. The beds are also cleaned with a UV vacuum, and then certified as Kid-Worthy. Sleepyhead Beds also needs and accepts gently used bedding— sheets and blankets—and new pillows, and is in particular need of Pack and Plays. “Pack and Plays are a really good sleep solution for babies,” says Cook. “We could help so many more families if we had more of those to offer.” Learn more at SleepyHeadBeds.org.

A little background: I’ve lived in the same townhome for 12 years. We moved in when my kids were little. Now my oldest is away at college and I have two teenagers at home. There’s enough space for us all to peacefully coexist, but, as so many built-about-30-y earsago homes are, the layout is outdated and choppy. Like many people who reside somewhere for a long time, our home had become a little too lived-in. Plus, I work from home. My office was in the corner of my bedroom and my desk—an imposing, oversized, Army-green desk—was piled with work and papers. It was a scant two steps from my bed. I share these details because this is a story of how I came to understand two important things about the place I call

Even a small corner can be turned into a productive home office.
“Tell me about these printer’s drawers on the wall. What do they mean to you?” “Tell me how you’re sleeping. Do you feel rested when you wake up?” “Tell me about the opportunities you want. Are you working with clients you enjoy, or do you want to expand your business?” She asked my daughter specific questions while in her room, my son other questions while we were in his. And when it came time to talk about my room, she sent both of my teens downstairs so we could discuss how having my office in my bedroom affects my personal relationships and how clearing out old energies is vital in forging new relationships. She spent more than two hours detecting while we took notes. She recommended prac-

hen a recently married area couple decided to make Old Leawood their new home, they quickly realized that building would be their best option. They enlisted Scott and Molly Koenigsdorf from Koenig Home and Design to turn their dreams into a reality. "The Koenig Team was thrilled when these buyers decided to have us be their builder,” says Scott. “Our initial discussions were about how they wanted the Koenig style for their next home. The next step was just finding them the right lot. Within a few months we were able to find the perfect lot that fit their desires for privacy, but still in a great location.” The building and decorating process was easier than the newlyweds anticipated. The builder walked them through each step with
great care. “The Koenig team made it very easy to make our decisions by providing a realistic timeframe and help along the way at each appointment to get exactly what we wanted.” Using the popular Houzz app aided in narrowing down what they liked and did not like, and helped the couple communicate it. The Koenig team was able to see their vision and help pinpoint it in their decision making. The couple appreciated that the Koenig team made the big decisions about floor plan and light switch placement, while they got to focus on the fun decisions like finishes, paint colors, tile and countertop selections and landscaping.

They love the established neighborhood and the great families that live in the area. “Everyone is very close and they have all been so friendly,” she says. The amenities nearby are also a great part of the neighborhood; their go-tos are Blue Moose, Spin Pizza and they enjoy being close to Corinth, the Village and Waldo.
Designer and Business Development Coordinator Molly says the newlyweds were great clients to have. "They were very involved in the design of their home and knew from the start what it would take to put their touch on it. They worked with our design team and subcontractors to make their vision a reality. Their traditional home mixes masculine and urban elements with warm industrial touches. It turned out so beautifully, and we’re so glad we got to work with such a great couple." From tear down to move in, the project took about nine months. The happy husband carried his new bride across the threshold in mid-December of 2015.

very child can be a leader. This is the premise that The Leader in Me schools are built on. The Leader in Me, a FranklinCovey program, is a self-described transformation process that teaches leadership and life skills to students in more than 2,500 elementary and middle schools throughout the world. There are several The Leader in Me schools in the Metro area, including Olathe, Parkville, Independence, Grain Valley, Lee’s Summit, and Kansas City, Missouri. The goal of The Leader in Me program is to integrate leadership development, curricula and traditions at each school which, in turn enhances relationships, transforms culture, and motivates staff members and students to value and develop not just study skills, but leadership and life skills. Though FranklinCovey draws inspiration and guidance from various leaders in the fields of business and education, Steven Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a key component in the process and implementation of the programs. Mark Heck, principal of Forest View Elementary School in Olathe, was introduced to The Leader in Me after he was named as principal-to-be of Forest View. “I thought it was a perfect fit for what I was about to do: create a brand new school from the ground up--its culture, its philosophy, and its foundation,” says Heck. “When I started interviewing staff,

LIGHT FIXTURE REGRET
is Real
I
f you have trouble making decisions, and you need a new light fixture in your house, dark times might be ahead. The sheer number of choices you’ll have to muddle through will make you wish you could just throw a dart and not care. But that’s not an option, is it? The lighting scene seems to have exploded in the last decade. Searching the phrase “light fixtures” on Amazon.com is akin to flirting with infinity. Last time I checked, the site offered 1,071,809 options for screwing in a light bulb. (I think that number is low.) But forget the online portals. Consider the stores you can drive to. Brick and mortar retailers can be just as dizzying. Trust me. I just struggled through a “pendant” selection. In my case, I tolerated ugly overhead lighting for too long. It was a track fixture bolted to the high ceiling of our master bathroom. Every day it emanated unflattering beams normally reserved for discount fitting rooms. I had a hate-hate relationship with that overhead monster, yet it was a low redecorating priority. Then, Mother Nature intervened in the form of a roof leak. A ceiling repair eventually floated to the top of our to-do list. This meant a new light was in order. I was thrilled at the chance to select something new, something cool. I considered myself a bit of an expert. After all, over the years I had switched out a decent share of light sources for higher traffic rooms. Couple that with the home improvement awareness I naturally absorbed as a mortgage payer. The phases of life—marriage, nesting, children, entertaining and panic—had always forced me to hike through a forest of decorating magazines and other sources.

WORDS DENISE SNODELL
It turned out I was living in a fantasy land. It had been a dozen years since lighting was on my radar. With only weeks to “just pick something,” as my husband encouraged, I hit a wall. I realized that since the last time I made dibs on Thomas Edison’s invention, the lighting industry had somehow exploded into an intergalactic mass. There were too many choices. I was calm when I first checked out recommended decorating websites. So much beauty and imagination! Then I realized the pixels didn’t translate. I needed context. I upped the search to a tactile level of magazines and catalogs. Pages of “maybes” were torn out and stacked. But doubt set in. I couldn’t just order the focal point of a room from a flat image. I hit the stores, from specialty lighting meccas to Pottery Barn-ish places to the big box retailers that also sell spackle and weed killer. I noticed three things about this reconnaissance technique: • It’s overwhelming. • There are some weird chandeliers out there. • I spent hours looking up. A literal pain in the neck. So how does the story end? I circled back to the online galaxy and threw that dart. The pendant I selected for the room is okay. Not great, but okay. We graduated from an awful fixture to a tolerable one, which technically counts as a home improvement. Next time a situation like this arises, I’m consulting with a decorator. Call me illuminated.
