ven though I don’t love frigid temperatures, December is by far my favorite month of the year. The excitement and magic of watching my kids experience all of our family holiday traditions is so much fun, and the anticipation of Christmas morning makes me still feel like a kid. I absolutely love every part of it, and I think I have just as hard of a time falling asleep on Christmas Eve as my kids do, because I can’t wait to see their faces light up the next morning.

My oldest child is most like how I was on Christmas Eve. I hear him get up several times throughout the night to check out the stockings and to shake presents (I pretend I don't hear him), and then he sneaks back to bed, only to get back up an hour later to do the same thing. The anticipation is just too much for him. One of the things I marvel at regarding my childhood Christmas tree is my mom’s ability to leave the tree just as we decorated it. (I have 9 siblings, so the tree was a hot mess after we were done adorning it with decor.) Our favorite thing about decorating that tree was stringing tons of popcorn strands. I still can remember the numbing pain of sticking my fingers a million times, but it was worth it. By the time Christmas morning finally came around, the majority of the popcorn that once decorated the tree was eaten off the strand. (Yes, my mom fed us….we apparently liked the taste of stale popcorn). That tree was quite the sight, and makes me smile every time I think of it.

I love to get caught up in all of the fun that comes with the holidays like visits with Santa, making gingerbread houses, looking at holiday light displays, ice-skating, ugly christmas sweater parties, shopping for gifts and so on. However, I always hope that I instill in my family the true meaning of Christmas and the spirit of giving during the holiday season, especially to those in need.

How manners can go a long way in court Stange Law Firm, PC
When a party goes to court for a divorce or family law matter, manners can go hand-in-hand with having a successful outcome. The reality is judges can quickly come to an impression about somebody when they are in front of the judge. So, if a party is well-mannered and respectful, this can have a positive effect on the case outcome. On the flip-end, if somebody is not well mannered and disrespectful, this can have an adverse effect. “What are good manners in the courtroom?” “And what should I not say or do in the courtroom?” These are common questions that a party asks when they have a court date coming up in their case. First, “your honor,” is an expression that every party coming to a court should include in their vocabulary. When asked a question by a judge, “your honor” is one of the most important phrases a party has to know. Many of the responses of a party
will simply call for a “yes, your honor” or a “no, your honor” response. It is critical as well to only speak when spoken to or given permission to speak. For many parties, they want to speak up a lot. They want to interrupt the judge, the other attorney or their own attorney. They want to be argumentative and make their case. This is almost always a mistake. If a party wants to say something, it is almost always best said through their attorney. This is why they paid to have an attorney in the first place. To the extent it is even appropriate for them to speak, asking for permission from the court is definitely advisable in most instances. When given the opportunity to speak, it is important to seem even-keeled and level-headed in the courtroom. It is important to be respectful and not argumentative in family court. A party also has to read the body language well of a judge. If the judge looks annoyed or irritated about what is being said, it is important for a party to catch these queues and stop
talking. Body language is also important as well. A lot can be said in a courtroom that can be frustrating for a party going through a divorce or family law matter. But if a party looks angry or frustrated, or if a party sighs, shrugs their shoulders or throws up their hands in response to what is said, this generally does not come off well in court. For most parties, it is better to sit stone-faced when others are speaking– no matter whether what is being said is beneficial or negative toward them. Even passing notes to an attorney, when overdone, during a trial or hearing can make an adverse impression. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. We have lawyers available to help you in your case. When you retain our firm, you will receive access to your case through Your Case Tracker in addition to receiving your lawyer’s personal cell phone number. Call today to schedule your confidential consultation.

K
ansas City Bone and Joint Clinic Gives Back to Help Patients Move Through Life Pain-Free In 2012, Janet Sitzmann gingerly and painfully made her way through life on two bad knees, often assisted by a cane or a walker. With no insurance and no way to afford knee replacement surgery out-of-pocket, her situation seemed hopeless. Then she heard about the Kansas City Bone and Joint Clinic’s participation in Operation Walk, a not-for-profit medical service organization that provides free surgical treatment to care for debilitating bone and joint conditions for patients that have no access to care due to financial reasons. After completing a clinical evaluation, medical clearance and meeting financial need criteria, Sitzmann found she had been chosen as the first recipient of the KCBJ’s annual participation in Operation Walk. In December 2012, she received a bilateral knee replacement at St. Joseph Medical Center. Her operation was performed by Dr. Jeffrey Salin, DO, an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacement. He recalls the feeling of giving back when the practice donates a costly and life-changing surgery each holiday season. “When we get together as a team for Operation Walk, there’s the feeling of doing something so worthwhile,” Salin says. “It’s more than just a job, it’s a feel-good attitude. It’s exciting and fun.” Gerald McNamara, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in total knee and hip replacement, says it can be challenging for surgeons to donate their services because they are such a small part of the overall expense. “It’s not just on surgeon’s shoulders to offer their skills. It requires a facility, staff for the pre-op, OR, and recovery; anesthesia, suppliers of the implants, therapists, home health and availability of medication at a reasonable cost,” McNamara says. “When everyone gets involved we can make a big difference.” In April 2013, Sitzmann was able to travel to France to be at the birth of her first grandchild, navigating airports and caring for her family with ease. Today she thanks the Kansas City Bone and Joint Clinic and all the partners who made it possible for her to live without debilitating knee pain. “Before, I was going from day to day, unsure if I was going to make it into tomorrow,” Sitzmann says. “Now I feel limitless, like I can step into a future CONTINUED > that I didn’t have before.”

The Kansas City Bone and Joint Clinic has partnered with Operation Walk for four years and has provided 10 total hip and knee replacement surgeries to patients with medical and financial need. Doctors Bruce McNamara, Salin, Samuelson and Latteier, all surgeons who specialize in the surgical treatment of hips and knees, say they look forward to continuing with their participation. “Operation Walk allows people to regain comfort level and function which allows them to return to meaningful work activities,” says Thomas Samuelson, MD. “‘Thanks for giving me my life back’ is not uncommon to hear after helping these patients, and that’s gratifying to us.” The Kansas City Bone and Joint Clinic, a division of the Signature Medical Group of Kansas City, is comprised of nine physicians. Robert Bruce, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon
specializing in sports medicine as well as hip and knee replacements for more than 25 years, says the group’s focus is to provide the best service possible to the Kansas City community. Since 1940, the clinic has provided orthopedic service with compassion in Overland Park for patients with musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. In 2007, it opened a new facility at 10701 Nall. In March 2015, it opened its newest facility at 3151 NE Carnegie Drive in Lee’s Summit. In addition to Operation Walk, KCBJ physicians and staff give back to their community through a variety of Charitable opportunities including the Signature Healthcare Foundation, Harvesters, the Heart Walk, the KC Ability Expo and breast cancer fund-raising.

HAND & UPPER EXTREMITY ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON
J. Clinton Walker, MD
I became a part of Kansas City Bone & Joint Clinic in August of 2008. I have always been attracted to orthopedics and upper extremity problems in particular. There’s something satisfying about the approach of taking someone who’s active, has an injury and can’t do their activities, and then helping get them back to their activities. I have a special interest in upper extremity conditions. Prior to joining our office, I completed my hand and upper extremity fellowship at the Indiana Hand Center in Indianapolis, Indiana and am an active member in American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) as well as the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). I am Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery with additional specialty certification for Hand Surgery. I completed my undergraduate degree at Pittsburg State University where I also played baseball. I completed my medical degree and orthopaedic surgery residency program at Washington University in St. Louis. One of the most enjoyable things about my practice is seeing someone happy with their results and being able to resume their life activities. To see somebody smile and go back to everything that they want to do is kind of the ultimate satisfaction. On a personal note, I enjoy baseball, gardening and the great outdoors.

Winter on the
Lake
ARTICLE TAMMY RICHARDS PHOTOGRAPHY TREVOR HAWKINS

any Midwesterners enjoy spending summertime on and around the lake. The hot and humid climate fits perfectly with activities such as swimming, boating, skiing and sailing. When the seasons begin to change, the lake does too. What was once a fluid vehicle for family fun, soon becomes a frozen obstacle, causing many lake goers to dock their boats and retreat inside. Not so for the citizens of Lake Lotawana; they utilize the lake all year around. Summertime on this lake looks similar to that of many others. Residence take part in customary water sports, but also have the opportunity to join an organized ski club or become CONTINUED > members in the Missouri Yacht Association. WINTER ON THE LAKE
(CON TI N U ED)
These organization hold a ski show and other events, often inviting similar groups to participate as well. “We sail a type of boat called a C Scow, with specific fleets for kids, ladies and a mixed fleet.” Austin, a life-long Lotawana resident, explains “We have had up to 1,000 boats tied up on the lake at once.” What sets this community apart from many others is their unconventional approach to the winter months. As most neighborhoods are finding refuge from the chilly weather, families here are bundling up and heading outdoors in much of the same ways they do the rest of the year. Families and friends enjoy ice skating, playing hockey, ice fishing and parties at the Yacht Club complete with bonfires and S’mores. A quick pick-up game of hockey or a day of ice-boating is quite common on weekends once the lake freezes. The seasonal home owners generally don't stick around for the winter, so the "lake rats" of Lotawana enjoy the quite serenity all to themselves. Many families also take to the lake in boats made specifically for the ice. In the winter since they can’t sail, they get out on the lake in ice boats. These boats have blades on the bottom that allow them to glide on top of the ice and get up to speeds as fast as 50 miles an hour. There is some caution involved in this type of recreation. The weather in Missouri creates changes in the ice that can cause cracks. Austin remembers one winter his father actually fell through the ice. “The boats float, so he was able to crawl up through the back to get out and he was fine.” Clearly this community takes full advantage of living in a place full of nature and beauty no matter what the season. "One of my favorite things about living here at this time of year,” Austin says,” is how peaceful and quiet it is.” 36

fun holiday tradition amongst friends is a good ol' cookie exchange. It's a great excuse to get together and then return home with a plethora of sweet treats and festive goodies. ee’s Summit gastroenterologist Marc Taormina, MD, is a clinical educator. Talk with him for a moment about his job, and he’ll emphasize the importance of screening for colon cancer at age 50, or at age 45 if you’re African American and at higher risk for the disease. Or how a persistent case of heartburn should be evaluated to rule out a precancerous condition. But he’s also an educator in the more traditional sense, serving weekly as a docent to second-year medical students in the University of Missouri Kansas City’s six-year medical school program.
52
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | December 2016
Alongside Taormina, medical students become more comfortable in a clinical setting and practice interactions such as taking patients’ history, performing a physical and breaking bad news. “I respect the patient and make sure they’re comfortable and involved in all decision-making,” Taormina says. “I try to be empathetic and impart those qualities on the students that I’m teaching.” Treating patients in Lee’s Summit and teaching medical students brings Taormina’s career path full-circle. The Kansas-City native attended East High School and was a member of UMKC’s first graduating class of six-year medical degree students in 1977. During his time as a medical student, he spent time alongside Lee’s Summit family physicians Drs. Dempsy and Bell. “My time with them piqued my interest in Lee’s Summit and made me want to come back to the community,” Taormina says. “Now as physician here, I’ve come to really value the medical community and appreciate the rapport I’ve established with many long-term patients.” Following graduation from UMKC, Taormina joined the Army and completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington D.C. He completed residency training and five years of active duty at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. In 1985, he returned to the Kansas City area and transitioned to Army Reserve.
Taormina opened his private practice, Midwest Gastroenterology, in Lee’s Summit in 1998. In 2003, the practice and adjoining Midwest Physicians Surgery Center moved to its current home at 3601 NE Ralph Powell Road. As Lee’s Summit has grown, so has the practice. Midwest Gastroenterology includes nine practitioners who see patients in Lee’s Summit and Independence as well as in Kansas as a part of Westglen Gastrointestinal Consultants. At the Lee’s Summit location, medical providers are able to provide clinical consultation as well as perform outpatient procedures such as colonoscopies and upper endoscopies in the surgical center. “We feel that the surgery center allows us to provide high-quality service in a lower-cost environment,” Taormina says. “Sometimes patients feel more comfortable having a procedure done at an office rather than the hospital.” Taormina lives in Lee’s Summit with his wife Stephanie Graham-Taormina, an attorney who specializes in criminal, traffic and DWI defense. Taormina is board-certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology and geriatric medicine. In 2015 and 2016, he was elected to Super Doctors, which identifies top physicians as selected by their peers. He is the medical director for the Midwest Physicians Surgery Center. In addition, he is involved in a variety of professional and service organizations. He is the president-elect of UNICO-Kansas City, an organization that provides scholarships to Italian-American students. He serves on the board of the Kansas City Medical Society and is on the medical advisory board for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Taormina serves as a volunteer physician for MetroCARE, an organization that connects patients with limited finances with free specialty care. To make an appointment with Taormina or other Midwest Gastroenterology providers, call 816836-2200 or visit midwestgastrokc.com
