Imagine the possibilities.

love new beginnings. The turn of the calendar to a new year always excites me for the opportunity it offers to begin again, to start anew. There are so many ways to view the New Year. I have tried many. Most often I’d ascribe to the athlete's approach: setting goals and going for them with initial gusto (especially with eating and exercise goals) and then fizzling out. Even with the best tools, coaching and mindset, my tendency is to over-commit, fail and then feel bad. Maybe it is because my DNA is so thoroughly creative... my abstract random brain and spontaneous, free spirit has been inspired more by an artist’s approach to my new year’s hopes and dreams. I love seeing the blank pages of the calendar--of the outstretched weeks and months with all its as-yet-unwritten stories--all as a Photo by Freeland Photography blank canvas. When I began to view this as a time to create something new, it inspired a life-giving energy in me, rather than my previous boot-stap, will-power-myself-through mentality. Recently, in an effort to develop discipline in my artistic being in a way that honored my creative self, I spent 40 days watching the sun rise. It was not a strict routine, but rather a rhythm that held some flexibility and, most importantly, beauty. I’m very motivated to show up if it’s going to involve something beautiful. Finding a place was at first a challenge. I became frustrated with the rolling hills and lush trees of our fair city, and the developers who did not organize our neighborhoods around good views of dawn. But it quickly became a quest. I’ve found a few spots that I return to almost daily. I’ll never forget the first morning. The past couple of years have held a lot of difficult challenges in my personal life. I arrived at my chosen spot while the sky was still midnight blue, but the line at the horizon was turning a cool cerulean color as the sun, somewhere deep below, was making its way up. It struck me then that it was a metaphor for my life. That I was coming out of a long darkness, and soon light and new life awaited. My anticipation and excitement grew. It had been too long since I had taken time to stop and wait for something special like this. The moment the first rays of sunlight pierced my eyes also filled my mind with awe. Filling myself with that anticipation and light repeatedly for a month lifted my spirits more than any practice I have connected with. It has been a great way to start my days. To commit to deeply appreciating the beauty each new day offers, the chance to create something new, to begin again. Imagine the possibilities as you turn the calendar over and begin your year...all 365 new days of it.

Make a New Year’s Financial Resolution A CHANGE IN SOCIAL SECURITY AND LAST FALL’S MARKET TURMOIL MAKE JANUARY THE PERFECT TIME TO EVALUATE YOUR RETIREMENT PLAN ARTICLE STEPHEN STRICKLIN

hile planning for retirement, most people look for every possible way to maximize their future fixed income. We’re all facing rising health care costs, overall inflation and longer lifespans, so naturally we want to ensure that we won’t outlive our money. This is why having a formal retirement income plan is so important. In the past, some couples took advantage of a loophole in Social Security rules, which allowed them to reap an extra $60,000 (on average) from the system over a lifetime. Known as “file and suspend,” the strategy was the accidental result of the combination of certain regulations that allowed married recipients to maximize their benefits. Under the file-and-suspend strategy, the higher-earning spouse of a married couple would file for his/her benefits at full retirement age. However, he/she would then ask for payments to be suspended until a later date, usually a few years away. During the time of suspension, the eventual benefits would grow by approximately seven percent per year, allowing for a more comfortable retirement income later. Meanwhile, the lower-earning spouse would go ahead and claim his/her spousal benefits and start receiving checks at ap22

proximately 50 percent of the higher-earning spouse’s scheduled benefit amount. This allowed the couple to begin collecting some much-needed income from Social Security, while continuing to plan for retirement later. Eventually, if the higher-earning spouse died first, the lower-earning spouse could then switch to a survivor benefit at the now-higher rate. Now here’s the bad news: If you decided years ago that file-andsuspend would become a part of your retirement income strategy, you will need to come up with a new plan. Congress recently axed the file-and-suspend strategy and the new law will go into effect six months after President Obama signs the bill. For most couples, that means the option to file-and-suspend their benefits is off the table. However, if you and your spouse will both reach full retirement age within the next six months, you can still take advantage of the old rule. In addition to checking into your Social Security strategy, January is a great time to examine your asset allocation, especially after the market’s downturn in the fall of 2015. A mar-

ket drop is not uncommon after such a long bull run like we have had. In fact, there have been 35 declines of 10 percent or more in the S&P 500® since 1900. Of those 35 “corrections,” the index fully recovered its value after an average of approximately 10 months. There is no guarantee that the length of future recoveries will happen in the same time frame, but it’s important to keep in mind the purpose of the investments. This is why January is the time to determine your investment allocation of cash, bonds, stocks, and other non-market risk investments. If you are contributing to a 401(k) plan at work or directly into an IRA or Roth IRA, continue to do so because there is no better time to buy than when the market declines. However, if your timeframe for needing to access your retirement accounts is less than five years or if income is your primary goal, then other non-market risk investments may be more suitable. Both Social Security and investment strategies are important topics to discuss with a financial advisor before making any big decisions about your retirement plan. If you’re hoping to file and suspend your benefits in the next six months, or if you need to come up with a new plan because you will no longer be eligible to do so, a financial advisor can answer any questions you might have about Social Security and help you come up with a new plan to maximize your retirement income. Additionally, if you need help determining the right mix of cash, bonds, stocks, and annuities for your retirement funds, a meeting with a financial advisor would be helpful. Insurance co-pays will normally cover an entire urgent care visit. Uninsured or under-insured patients have the convenience of choosing between a few medical discount plans offered by The Urgency Room. Statistics show that the average emergency room visit costs approximately $1,200, while the average urgent care visit costs approximately $125. Due to the large price differences, and as a result of the Affordable Care Act, an increasing number of people are seeking more cost-effective options like urgent care, as opposed to going to the ER for non-life-threatening ailments. People are getting more involved economically in the medical decisions they make. If you have coverage and a high-deductible plan, you really care about where you’re getting treatment because a lot of the medical bills can come out of your pocket. You can’t walk into an ER and get care for free, so more people are choosing to go to urgent care clinics where it’s a lower costing, convenient option for people with, or without, access to health care coverage. Another noticeable trend in the delivery of emergency care is the development of freestanding emergency rooms (FERs). These look similar to urgent care centers in that they are usually in the same retail-facing suburban locations, such as strip malls. To add to the confusion, some FERs market themselves as both “emergency and urgent care,” making it incredibly difficult for consumers to tell the difference between the two. For all practical purposes, and for the vast majority of patients, FERs are functioning as walk-in urgent care centers that charge higher rates. The result is a bad financial outcome for consumers and independent providers. While they may appear similar in appearance, FERs cost a great deal more than urgent care – typically equal to that of a typical ER visit because many of them are out-of-network for most insurance plans. These medical facilities– where simple procedures like stitches and ankle sprains can cost thousands – will typically inform patients that they will bill insurance, but they are still left with a very high payment due after the visit due to coverage limitations. Since some patients are unaware they are entering an ER facility when they choose a FER for their medical care, The Urgency Room offers the following advice: The most common way to tell if you are walking into a freestanding ER is if you see the word ‘Emergency’ anywhere inside or outside of the building. “The trick is growing up without growing old.” ~ Casey Stengel Do we become “old” when we find our first gray hair? Or when we receive our first invitation to become a member of AARP? Maybe we don’t grow old but simply determined to act as young as we feel. Look around. We represent the largest slice of the U.S. population and we continue to grow by leaps and bounds. In fact, every day for the next 19 years, 10,000 individuals just like us will be turning 65 years of age. We are not the retirement “snowbirds” like our parents, so we continue to defy traditional expectations. Due to our numbers we have never known an age when we didn’t matter. So why start now? Despite the inevitable aging process, we intend to go the distance, and that is the key to our staying relevant. Remember, we grew up at a time in America when anything was possible. So why should we suddenly believe that we should matter less now and not be able to continue to chart our own course into the future? We have a great deal of influence on our children and grandchildren as a valued source of advice on all matters, including financial, because we have the power-and economic clout on our side. We hold 91 percent of America’s net worth and control nearly $80 billion in economic power. That makes us the single greatest economic force in the U.S. population. We spend more on cars, clothes, homes, dining, travel, technology, entertainment, furniture and other personal goods than our younger counterparts. 32

A lovely smile radiated from the face of the woman who responded. “No. We’re just out shopping and enjoying lunch and time together.” “Are you from around the neighborhood?” I asked. Take birding. At the southern tip of Texas, in the Rio Grand Valley, lies McAllen—a bustling metropolis on the Rio Grande that offers much in the way of its heritage for visitors to enjoy—arts, food and history. But McAllen is also known as a birding mecca, where even amateur birders can score sightings that might include everything from the Great Kiskadee, a boisterous bird with a distinctive kis-ka-dee call, to all varieties of herons, egrets and hawks. In fact, even the most casual bird-watching enthusiast can spot any number of feathered creatures that swoop, call and dive in a region that attracts nearly 540 species annually. Gorgeous metallic olive-green buff-bellied hummingbirds? Check. Plain chachalacas, large chicken-like birds that nest in palm trees and emit a raucous cha-cha-lac call? You bet. Costa Rica’s national bird, the claycolored thrush with its low-pitched song? Add that one to your Life List—that is, if you’re keeping track of all the bird species you’ve identified during birding. People who haven’t been introduced to the pleasures of birding often find that the bug bites them when visiting McAllen. Identifying look-alike species and subspecies, myriad plumage states and becoming intimately familiar with calls and habits is part of building a Life List—and if you start that list while in McAllen, you’re guaranteed to spy dozens and dozens in native woodlands and reserves. Ecotourism is big business in McAllen—also known as the Texas Tropics—where each year more than 125,000 eco-tourists migrate in and out of the area, binoculars and guidebooks in hand, visiting one of the unique nine branches of the World Birding Center in the Rio Grande Valley. The Center is a collaboration of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and nine Rio Grande Valley communities and comprises approximately 100,000 acres stretching from Roma, through McAllen to South Padre Island on the Gulf of Mexico. Edinburg Scenic Wetlands, the first arm of the World Birding Center, opened in March 2003. A lush 40-acre oasis in the middle of a busy urban landscape, you can view birds such as the Vermillion flycatcher, yellow-crowned night heron and loggerhead shrike and butterflies and other water-loving creatures. Explore winding paths, observe from waterside platforms and learn why wetlands are an environmental necessity, have economic value and add natural beauty to the area. Or the 760-acre Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park (headquarters of the World Birding Center) where more than 325 species have been seen from birding blinds. Dr. Matt Niewald, whose Lakewood Dental practice has been treating patients since 2005, has heard all this before. He understands it. Nearly every day, patients freely concede they’d rather be anywhere but in that chair. “Dental fears are often the product of misinformation or previous bad experiences. We take every step in our office to allay dental fears in the phobic patient,” says Niewald. “These fears are often overcome through patient education, and new techniques which significantly reduce the discomfort sometimes associated with a dental visit. The importance of taking your child to the dentist prior to the age of three significantly reduces the likelihood of dental fears later in life.” Originally from the east-central Missouri town of Owensville, Niewald has been a resident of Lee’s Summit for 11 years. After attending dental school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Niewald decided that Lee’s Summit was a great community to start a practice and raise a family. He sits on the board of directors for the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, and is a past president of the Missouri Dental Association. In November, he was named the 2015 Dentist of the Year by the Missouri Dental Association. He lives in Lee’s Summit with his three sons, Aidan, Ethan and Parker. Niewald was drawn to Lee’s Summit; in part by the way it blended big-city amenities with the small-town charm he recalls from Owensville. “While living in the KC metro, Lee’s Summit became appealing due to its fast paced economic growth, great schools, and the sense of community that existed,” he says.

But on a nearly daily basis, Niewald’s practice encounters something that’s common everywhere, whether it’s Owensville, Lee’s Summit or New York City: a fear of the dentist. While all patients are treated with great care at Lakewood Dental, Niewald understands special attention must be paid to those who carry a certain extra level of dental anxiety. “There are lots of new techniques that significantly reduce the associated fears of a visit to the dentist,” he says. “Education is, by far, the best method of overcoming dental fears. In the internet age, there is so much misinformation readily available to the patient. Discounting these falsehoods by actually ‘showing’ the patient accurate descriptions of their procedure goes a long way to allaying dental fears. We provide digital patient education that allows us to show step-by-step each procedure our office provides.” But Lakewood takes things a few comforting steps further. Office staff have worked to remove the “clinic” feel of the office, Niewald says, by providing a comfortable waiting room with an at-home motif. Each dental area is equipped with flat screen televisions. Patients getting routine exams and cleanings can expect heated massage chairs. “We strive to treat our patients as people who are like family, rather than as just a patient,” says Niewald. “We have patients ranging from age 1 to age 100. We like to set ourselves apart by providing patient focused, comprehensive care, and maintaining excellent oral health for our patients. We pride ourselves in the individual attention and great customer service we provide to each patient. At the end of the day, our patients are more akin to family than actual patients. It provides a great deal of satisfaction to both our employees and our patients.”

Dropping the manual top is a matter of undoing a central latch and pulling it back into folded position behind the seats. It is most easily done outside of the car, but can be done from inside. On the highway, the cloth top reverberated so loudly that I could hardly stand to drive more than 65 miles per hour.
