Letter from the Creative Director

JANUARY 2017

I

am not always the best at making New Year’s resolutions. It may be because I tend to reflect on changes and goals at the beginning of a school year. As a former teacher, and then after having four children of my own, a fresh beginning to me always seemed to fall in August at the beginning of a new school year. However, when I do make resolutions, they generally center around how I spend my time, or better yet, how I wish to spend it more wisely. As a mom, I often want to re-align my parenting goals, and personally I try and focus on making healthier choices. I have what some might call a sweet tooth. I unfortunately would choose coffee over water and dessert over a real meal any day of the week if I could (I don't, but it's tempting), and right around January each year, after over doing it with sweets during the holidays, I attempt to reel it in, eat healthier and start over. Any health guru out there is probably realizing I need an intervention and a sugar detox. I think that is what is so refreshing about a new year. The fresh start, clean slate, new beginning….the possibility of what could be is rejuvenating. Our January issue is dedicated to health and fitness. Reading these stories that our neighbors and local businesses shared with us this month has definitely motivated me to work hard this year to make healthy lifestyle goals. Perseverance and a positive mindset is key, and the success stories highlighted in this month’s issue reflect just that.

1. My Vitamix. This blender is beyond amazing and helps my family eat tons of fruits and veggies every day. 2. Kombucha -Hooray for a healthy gut. There are so many delicious choices out there. For baby steps, try the kombucha sodas first (they are delicious), and then graduate to the others. 3. Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate. Amazing for sports injuries and joints. Friendly tip: pick the one that is cold water soluble. Trust me….the other version is hard to choke down! Lots of brands to choose from, but I use Great Lakes, sold at some local health food stores or online.

Q&A WITH TRAINERS AT BETTER BODIES PILATES PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

HOW DO PILATES AND YOGA DIFFER FROM EACH OTHER?

A very common question! Both are great for mind-body connection, balance, flexibility and strength. Yoga is done on a mat using small props. Studio Pilates utilizes an array of specialized equipment which helps people get into and sustain positions they might not be able to do otherwise. Likewise, aerial yoga provides a "hammock" which acts in a similar fashion to Pilates equipment.

14

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2017

WHAT DOES PILATES TARGET?

The equipment, such as the Pilates Reformer, used in Studio Pilates, helps bring awareness to ones deep core muscles even when the exercise seems like an arm or leg exercise. The focus is how it relates not just to an arm or leg, but how to transfer that energy to the core muscles as well. Pilates adds an element of strength

HOW IN SHAPE AND FLEXIBLE DOES SOMEONE NEED TO BE

with stretch and eventually all moves are full body integrated.

TO START THIS TYPE OF WORKOUT FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Pilates is often referred to as the "bridge between PT and PE". Certified Pilates instructors, utilizing the Pilates machines, can work with clients who are rehabbing from surgeries, accidents and conditions. Many Pilates clients are currently in PT or just finishing. These clients start out with private sessions until strength and balance are improved. Pilates is perfect for people who have never exercised or are trying to get the edge in their sport; golf, tennis, football, etc. HOW IS ARIEL YOGA DIFFERENT THAN TRADITIONAL YOGA? WHAT BENEFITS DOES IT HAVE?

Aerial yoga provides a yoga hammock which is suspended from the ceiling and provides an added element of security when practicing moves that one may or may not be able to do on a mat. The advantage of this is that many experienced yogis are able to find a new depth in their poses and new yogis are able to achieve poses that they were not able to do before. It should be noted that Aerial Yoga is not the same as aerial silks. Aerial yoga is is done low to the ground and utilizes a systematic approach using Yoga poses. HOW CAN PILATES AND YOGA HELP WITH PREVIOUS INJURIES OR ACHES AND PAINS?

Many aches and pains are do from postural asymmetries and imbalances. The Pilates "Reformer" is named such, because it was designed to "Reform" the body by "informing" the body. Learning to move in a more balanced fashion, while stretching and strengthening the body almost always immediately helps with aches and pains. The other factor is the focus on strengthening the core which helps alleviate back pain.

WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE TAKE-AWAY YOU WANT OUR READERS TO KNOW ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF PILATES OR YOGA?

Studio Pilates is for "Every Body". The focus is on strengthening the Core from the inside out. Bottom line, "strong cores do more"! Whether it's training for a marathon, improving a golf or tennis game, or picking up a Grandchild, its a fun, focused way to exercise individually or in a small group setting. It is perfect for people who are intimidated at the gym or don't want a boot camp experience. January 2017 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

Now is your time TO Get healthy J

anuary is my favorite time of year for health & fitness. This is the time of year that I most commonly get to work with clients that are fresh, raw & usually extremely nervous. These are people that have unwillingly found themselves in a place where they are simply unhealthy, out of shape & overweight. They are apprehensive, intimidated & not feeling their best, but they want to make a change so badly they are willing to take a step in that direction and ask for help. This was me 7 years ago. I wasn’t sure how I had lost track of my own health in the process of creating a happy life, but I knew I needed to get control of it in order to give my best to my kids, family, friends and job. I was very lucky to have had the opportunity to enter a training program with my friend that was opening a fitness studio. We had great success (I lost 60 lbs) and I am forever appreciative. 7 years later, I still work out with her & have been able to help hundreds of others do the same. Regardless of how you do it, get moving & fuel your body with whole, healthy foods. Everything is better when you improve your health.

1. Set a realistic goal. 1-2lbs a week is healthy weight loss. 2. Eat only whole, healthy foods. Skip the processed, fake & excess calories. 3. Prep meals: cut up veggies, hard boil eggs, grill chicken breast, wash fruit & berries 4. Make a workout calendar. Schedule 3-5 times a week to break a sweat & write what you plan to do. If you are just starting out, find some beginner videos on YouTube, walk, elliptical, etc. Take direction on form and be smart. If you more active, then challenge yourself to something new. Find a fitness studio or class that challenges you & elevates your

heart-rate while building strength. 5. Find group support. Create a group text or Facebook group with friends that have similar goals. Be the friend that keeps everyone else on track, not the opposite. Finding accountability other than yourself will increase your success. 6. Log your food intake the first week. Be aware of what you are putting in your mouth & how many calories you eat on a daily basis. In order to burn fat, it is necessary to be in a calorie deficit. You simply cannot expect to out exercise a bad diet. 7. Drink tons of water, always. 8. Never eat below 1200-1500 calories,

especially if you are active. Your body needs fuel. Make the right choices on what that fuel is and do not starve yourself. Not only is it unhealthy, it is also counterproductive to weight loss & will damage your metabolism. Eat small healthy “meals” throughout the day. 9. Be positive and enjoy the journey. The fact you have the desire & will to get healthier is your starting point. Don’t put it off. Small daily changes add up and become big long term results. Be realistic, and don’t get down. “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now.” Shawna Wright fusionfitness.com shawnawright2002@yahoo.com CONTINUED >

NOW IS YOUR TIME

NANCY & SARAH

WHAT DO YOU EAT ON A TYPICAL DAY? NANCY:

I follow the Weight Watchers points plans & eat smaller portions of whatever I want. At times I don't like to restrict my diet from a cookie or two, and that's ok, because I can limit in other areas for that particular day. Some days I find my hunger is requiring me to fill up on healthier choices to allow my calorie (point) intake to be less while feeling satisfied and full. SARAH:

WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS STORIES

As a mother of 4, Nancy’s children were her biggest supporters in her journey of losing weight & getting healthy. In turn, her daughter, Sarah, has followed her lead & made some major changes in her own lifestyle as a college freshman. Sarah-age 20, lost 40 lbs went from a size 12 to a 4 Nancy: age 49, lost 98.7lbs went from a size 26 to a 12 WHY DID YOU EMBARK ON THIS JOURNEY TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH? NANCY:

The moment I decided to make a change was when my niece sent me a picture of me dancing with my son Jacob at her wedding. I can see we're both smiling, but I remember how I felt at that moment. Despite the smile I was sad, unhappy with myself and disappointed in myself. With the support of my family and friends, I made the decision to make a change.

Right now I am working on a Ketogenic diet which means I eat high fat and low carbs. It is really great and definitely shows results. An average day for me usually consists of eggs and bacon for breakfast, and protein shake for lunch, and a cheeseburger without a bun for dinner along with some stuffed mushrooms or cauliflower mash. DO YOU WORKOUT? NANCY:

Walking is typically my favorite but honestly, the elliptical gives me better results. I have also just joined a new gym which I am excited about, because I feel comfortable. Regardless of what I am doing, I ALWAYS wear my Alta Fitbit. The accountability makes it my most important tool for the exercise component. SARAH:

SARAH:

The freshman 15 crept up on me quickly. I really just wanted to be comfortable in my body and be happy with the way I looked. As a dancer, I cared about my appearance when I was dancing on stage and it is hard when you don’t feel comfortable in your costumes and in front of an audience. 24

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2017

I meet with my trainer about 2 to 3 times a week and do full body workouts with her. I try to get in some cardio throughout the week even if it is just hopping on the

elliptical for 20 minutes. Weight lifting is definitely my favorite thing to do. It has produced amazing results and is a great way to change up your workout routine. TIPS FOR OTHERS: NANCY:

While I've lost a significant amount of weight, I'm most proud of my general attitude in regards to my health. No longer do I think in terms of "black and white, all or nothing", either lose it all or gain it all back, starve or binge. I can finally see that grey area, which for me means this, persistence over perfection. Life is never going to be perfect, and I'm certainly not either, but with the persistence to take care of myself and focus on my health and well-being I know it's not only a life well lived, but one that my family and I can be proud of, and that's the best success of all! SARAH:

Don’t worry so much about the number on the scale. My motivation what simply how I felt in my skin. If you aren’t happy with the way you look, take the steps and get motivated to work until you are proud what you look like. It is amazing how much of an impact feeling comfortable in your skin can have on your confidence and happiness.

Fisherman Brings Wild-Caught Alaskan Salmon to Kansas City ARTICLE NATALIE FIELEKE | PHOTOGRAPHY AMY KUNTZ

rowing up outside of Portland, Oregon, Brian O’Neil spent his summers on the sea, fishing for salmon in the waters of the Pacific Northwest with his father and grandfather. Brian came to attend college in Warrensburg, met his wife, Lisa, and eventually settled down in rural Missouri, but salmon fishing remains a way of life for the O’Neil family. The O’Neil’s have called Missouri home since 2000, but they spend summers continuing Brian’s family legacy of salmon fishing. Joined now by his father, Lisa and their four children, O’Neil spends mid-June through mid-August on a 40-foot ‘stern picker’ commercial salmon fishing boat, intercepting the fish returning to Alaska’s Cook Inlet during spawning season. “Family is important to me and I take a lot of pride in doing what my grandfather loved to do,” O’ Neil says. “Fishing has always been a part of my life.” From the outside, the O’ Neil’s rural home north of Independence belies their connection to the sea. But inside, their garage holds three deep freezers brimming with Wild Alaskan salmon. Enter Brian’s shop, a high-ceilinged metal building and you’ll find he’s working on a little project during the off-fishing season – constructing the Independence, a towering 40-foot commercial salmon fishing boat. Come summer, O’Neil will transport his newly-completed boat on a flatbed trailer to Bellingham, Washington, a hub for commercial boat builders. After selling the boat to another fisherman, the O’ Neil’s will board their own vessel and begin their own fishing season. Each year, O’Neil catches thousands of pounds of salmon and sells his harvest to an Alaskan processor for wholesale distribution to the lower 48 states and Canada. In 2016, he became licensed by the state of Alaska and launched Wild Alaska Fish Co., which allows him to bring the fish he catches directly to Kansas City consumers. At the end of his 2016 fishing season, O’Neil shipped 2,000 pounds of salmon to the Kansas City area. On August 20, he began selling his catch of Chinook, Sockeye, Coho and Keta salmon at the Lee’s Summit Farmer’s Market. CONTINUED >

FRESH CATCH

(CON TI N U ED)

High-quality Alaskan salmon is sought-after for its protein content and nutrition profile. One 3.5-ounce fillet of wild-caught Sockeye salmon boasts 27 grams of protein. In addition, its hearthealthy combination of omega three fatty acids, vitamins and minerals have been shown to help decrease cholesterol, reduce blood clotting factors, increase relaxation in larger arteries and blood vessels and decrease inflammatory processes in blood vessels. And O’Neil suggests several factors make his wild-caught salmon even healthier than store-bought. He says one key to the quality is the transparency of his business model. 30

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2017

“It’s a unique product because I sell what I catch,” O Neil says. “A lot of times seafood is mismarked or mislabeled. With me, I have pictures of us harvesting the fish and have all the catch records. I have a paper trail and a picture trail.” Another nutrient boost comes from the salmon's freshness. Each day, his catch is carefully handled and taken to the processor, where the meat is prepared, vacuum-sealed and flash frozen to preserve quality. “Up in Alaska, we bring a fish home right out of the ocean, grill it and enjoy it in community with our fellow fishermen,” O’ Neil says. “It’s the highest quality

because it’s so fresh. You get a lot better product because it’s processed in Alaska almost immediately after we pull it out of the ocean. People appreciate that.” O’Neil says he wanted to start small, bringing a small portion of his 32,000pound harvest to market in Missouri in his first year in business. The Kansas City market has been receptive. In addition to selling at the Lee’s Summit market, Wild Alaska Fish Co. salmon is available at Terra Health & Wellness Market in Independence, Troque Farms Store and its Fresh Connect home delivery service and at Wells Family Farm at City Market.

Who gets the rings? Stange Law Firm, PC

When parties decide to get married, an engagement usually takes place first where an engagement ring is given. At the time of the marriage, wedding rings and/or bands are then exchanged during the wedding ceremony. These rings are generally gifts from one party to the marriage to the other. When a divorce takes places, the question that often comes up is who gets these rings? In some instances, these items are not in dispute. But in other divorces, one party might demand the return of the wedding and/or engagement ring. In many of these cases, one party may feel as if they had to save and make a significant investment in 32

order to make the purchase. Especially if the marriage is short-term in duration, a party can then feel as if the return of these items is the right thing. The laws in each state can vary and each marriage is different. This is why it is important for any party to consult with an attorney who is licensed and competent to practice law in their jurisdiction. However, generally speaking, in a divorce, marriage property and debt is to be divided in a just manner when considering all the of the factors in a jurisdiction where equitable distribution is the law. The winery may be best-known for its Vignoles, a semi-sweet white wine rich with honeysuckle that recently brought home the designation of Double Gold in the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, but Stonehaus’ offerings are diverse. During winter months, drier, fuller-bodied reds and port are popular, Euritt says. For those seeking a full-bodied dry red wine, Euritt recommends the winery’s Cynthiana. This inky, bold cask-aged red is sourced from Norton grapes, one of the three grape varieties grown on-site at the winery in Lee’s Summit. Cynthiana’s rich flavors of cherry and pecan pair perfectly with steak, smoked meats or barbecue. Suzanne Elton, MD

I became a part of Kansas City Bone & Joint Clinic in 2008 following completion of my fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. I am board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and have a special interest in Endoscopic (minimally invasive) carpal tunnel surgery, the treatment of hand and wrist arthritis and tennis elbow treatment. I am a member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS), and MAYO alumni Association. I earned my undergraduate degree at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas and my medical degree at the University of Kansas, School of Medicine. My residency was completed at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. I chose orthopaedic surgery because I like fixing things, as well as fixing people; and I am happy when I am able to help them get back doing what they want to be doing. The hand intrigues me because of the mixture of delicate features such as the tendons and nerves with the stronger supporting bones and how those all work together to provide necessary functions. When I am outside of the clinic and operating room, I enjoy reading, running, traveling, biking and spending time with my family. I find my job very rewarding. My favorite thing about my job is seeing a patient come in with a problem or condition that keeps them from doing what they want to do and then helping them work through the issues. I enjoy helping them return to their previous activities.
