GET TO KNOW YOUR l ocal ADVISORS RYAN BARBER WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE NEW YEAR?
With three kids ages 13, 10 and five, there is never a dull moment. I always enjoy watching them grow as little people. I also look forward to celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary with my best friend since age 12. She hasn’t kicked me out yet! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO MORE OF IN 2019 AND WHY?
Less! I think I’ll slow down a bit. I’ll try to work on myself, health, mental and physical. More yoga and Pilates with my wife. I love work, but will find more balance between work and life. WHAT NEW EXPERIENCES DO YOU PLAN TO TRY THIS YEAR?
We're taking the kids skiing for the first time- that should be great or terrible. Either way, an experience! :) We look forward to discovering new or old places in Missouri with the kids. Plenty of gems in our own backyard.
ANNE PEDERSEN
WHAT ARE YOUR BEST MEMORIES FROM 2018?
Several of my clients retired last year and I was thrilled to share in their successful lifelong achievement. I was also excited to see them enter a new season of their lives. I grew to know them all during the past 21 years since I started my office in 1997. Now I hear about their plans for the future. Whatever they choose, I'll be beside them making sure they have what they need along the way. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2019?
This year, many of my clients will be preparing to retire, funding their children's and grandchildren's college and other expenses, remodeling homes, saving money to purchase new homes and cars, and paying off debt. I look forward to brainstorming, problem-solving, and mostly helping them figure out how we can accomplish any and all of these goals. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
STACY BURTIN MILLS
My husband and I got two puppies in early 2018. One is a Welsh Pembroke Corgi, the other is a Shweenie (a mix between a Shi Tzu and a Dachshund). We enjoy taking them for walks around our neighborhood in Lakewood. You just might see us either early in the morning, over lunch or in the evening. If you do, please wave at us and honk. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE NEW YEAR?
I am looking forward to spending more quality time with my family. My family is truly a blessing, and I love them dearly. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO MORE OF IN 2019 AND WHY?
I am going to exercise more. Exercise is vital to our overall health. I want to make sure that I am around to watch my daughter grow up and become the beautiful person that GOD designed her to be. I also need to exercise, so that I can keep up with her. WHAT NEW EXPERIENCES DO YOU PLAN TO TRY THIS YEAR?
I would like to travel more with my family. Now that my daughter is older, my husband and I would like to take her to some of the places we have visited over the years. In addition, we would like to experience places and cultures that are new to all of us. We are very blessed. Something we want to continue to do this year is find opportunities to volunteer as a family. We like to give back and contribute to our community, and it's important that we do it as a family. I want my daughter to continue to volunteer throughout her life and share the importance with future generations.
Thank you to all of our clients for a fantastic 2018! Best Wishes for a prosperous and joyful 2019!

It’s a new year, and with that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help me focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. This year my goal is to become more outwardly focused and to become very deliberate in finding ways to help people who may be hurting or in need, specifically in our schools but also in the community. I want to create opportunities for our readers to give to those who fall between the cracks of receiving assistance. My intention this year is to shine light on big issues that affect people in our community like teen suicide, anxiety, depression, poverty, and I want to highlight local small non-profit

earth to be a servant and a difference-maker. I want to stop thinking about doing these things and instead act on them. These are some of my goals for 2019. I would like to encourage you to share with us your stories of overcoming trials or stories of people in our community doing good things for others. There is power in the stories you share with us because they can uplift people going

DONOVAN METOYER:
Staying the Course WHEN DONOVAN METOYER WAS A HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE, HIS BASKETBALL COACH TOLD HIM HE WASN’T GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE THE TEAM. Discouragement from an authority figure weighed heavily, and Metoyer switched his focus to track-and-field. But today, seemingly impassible obstacles make the ninja warrior athlete even more driven. Metoyer is program director at MOTUS Ninja Warrior. As the expert ninja warrior on-staff, he develops lesson plans and class structure for the gym, and leads 30 classes per week. One of his biggest passions is to challenge students to consider their toughest physical challenges from an alternative angle. “You’re not good enough – those words don’t ever leave my mouth,” Metoyer says. “It’s like this: Try it. Take your time. Come up with a different method. Practice it and repeat it. Then you’ll overcome this obstacle or whatever it is you’re going through in life.” Metoyer discovered the sport of ninja warrior at the age of 17 when he saw the Japanese version of the show on TV. He knew he needed an opportunity to compete. In 2013, he applied to American Ninja Warrior, qualified for season 5, and was a contestant on the TV series’ Denver episode. At the time, there weren’t any ninja warrior gyms in the Kansas City area, so Metoyer used whatever he could to simulate obstacles on the show. He practiced climbing skills on fire escape ladders and I-beams in parking garages and used a skating halfpipe as a warp wall. Metoyer, a gentleman in real-life, goes by ‘The Classy Ninja’ on the show, competing in classic attire that makes him feel ready for anything – often a suit, sometimes a vest and tie combo. That first season, Metoyer learned that dress shoes and obstacles don’t mix when he lost his shoe on the rolling log, ending his run. After several years of ups and downs, Metoyer considers 2017 to be the highlight of his ninja warrior career. He completed the course, ran third, and fell right before the warp wall. With the top competitors in the nation going after him, he thought there was no way he’d make it past the Kansas City finals to the national competition in Vegas. But Metoyer finished 15th, earning the opportunity to compete with 98 of the top ninja warrior competitors at the Vegas finals in 2017. “To be in that elite group is an honor and something to be admired,” Metoyer says. “You want to get back there.” 12
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2019
With that goal in sight, Metoyer is preparing his video submission for the chance to compete in 2019. Just getting on the show is a challenge in itself. Show producers receive approximately 40,0000 videos and will only invite a select number to compete for the chance to become the next American Ninja Warrior. No matter the outcome in 2019, Metoyer is encouraged by his personal progress and the way he’s been able to reach others through the sport. “I’ve come a long way, and I’m inspiring others to reach outside their comfort zone and try something new,” he says.
NINJA WARRIOR WORDS OF WISDOM 01
02
“Focus on what you’re doing. Don’t look to the right when you’re on the warp wall to see if your mom is watching.” “When you’re young and you fall, you get embarrassed in front of everyone. Everyone on American Ninja Warrior has fallen at some point. It’s okay to fall. Just get back up.”
03
“You can’t develop if you stay within your comfort zone.”
04
“Find someone to chase. It’s going to make you stronger.”

I feel deeply connected to the
COMMUNITY
DID YOU KNOW?
I am a graduate of Lee's Summit
A fire in downtown Lee’s Summit known as the Fire of 1885 burned down 25 buildings in downtown while the citizens of our community were attending church services. The entire business district was destroyed. However, the resilience of the citizens allowed them to immediately begin rebuilding the town. As a longtime citizen of this amazing City, resiliency of our citizens is what makes this a great place to live!
High School, and raised my family here. For over 18 years I have LOVED helping individuals and families make their dreams of home ownership come true. Lee's Summit has so much to offer with the cost of living, highly rated schools, but the history and the warm, welcoming people make it special. I can assist in both buying and selling transactions. Let me help you with your next move.

Why collaborative divorce and not mediation?
Mediation is very popular in society. When individuals think about settling their divorce outside of court, most resonate with the idea of mediation. While many might not totally understand what it is, most are open to the idea of it. Many wonder why collaborative divorce and not mediation? In other words, what is wrong with mediation that individuals should think about collaborative divorce? Nothing is wrong with mediation. Mediation is a good option for some to consider. In mediation, parties sit down with a neutral mediator to try to come to a resolution about their divorce or family law matter. In some cases, the parties come alone (without their attorneys) to meet with a mediator. In other cases, the attorneys might be present with them. One component that many do not realize is that a mediator cannot make parties settle their divorce or family law matter. All they can do is help to facilitate a discussion to
try to get them to a place where they settle. But in many cases, the details hang up settlement. “The devil is in the details,” as the saying goes. Disagreement about any issue in the divorce or family law matter can hang-up settlement. This is what causes many divorce and family law mediations to end without a settlement. This is where collaborative divorce is another option. Collaborative divorce is in some ways mediation plus. In other words, both lawyers in collaborative divorce are trained mediators. However, the collaborative professionals can help parties work through the details that are causing the parties not to settle. This is why collaborative divorce, in many ways, is mediation with this added benefit. Put simply, if there is a financial disagreement, the financial neutral can help. If there is custody disagreement, the custody professional can help. If parties do not communicate well regarding settlement, the
divorce coach can help. All of these professionals are available to help the parties work through these details in collaborative divorce. This is where many parties should consider collaborative divorce where both parties want to settle, but the details are the impediment. Stange Law Firm, PC, limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, adoption, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. GIVING BACK
Dermatologist Ta k e s P a t i e n t s f r o m Cancer to Cure WHEN DUSTIN STELLER MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR A FULL-BODY SKIN CHECK, THE 38-YEAR-OLD FATHER OF TWO when David Fieleke, MD, board-certified dermatologist at Cornerstone Dermatology & Surgery Group spotted the nickel-sized pink spot above Steller’s left eyebrow, the patient was glad he’d made an appointment. “The thing that scared me was that spot didn’t really mean anything to me, but if I had let it go and found out three or four years from now, it could have been a much bigger problem,” Steller says. “It motivated me to tell my friends and family, people I care about. Stop putting off that appointment.” When Steller’s biopsy results came back, Fieleke confirmed his diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma, the most common and easily treatable type of skin cancer. Fieleke, a fellowship-trained skin cancer surgeon, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery, an advanced treatment for basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. This in-office surgical procedure at Cornerstone Dermatology offers up to a 99 percent cure rate for these types of cancer. Mohs is an ideal option for higher-risk skin cancers or for skin cancer in areas where there’s not as much surrounding skin or tissue – areas such as the face, ears, scalp and hands, Fieleke says. “Mohs surgery allows us to take the smallest margin of tissue possible, sparing the most surrounding skin and offering patients the highest cure rate and best cosmetic result,” he says. Two weeks after his diagnosis, Steller returned to Cornerstone for his procedure. Fieleke removed the visibly evident cancerous skin from his forehead. With Mohs, the surgeon is also trained as the pathologist, so Fieleke examined the tissue under a microscope while Steller waited. If there had been any remaining skin cancer, he could have mapped out exactly where the residual tumor remained on the skin and only removed more skin in that specific location. 42

GIVING BACK
(CON TI N U ED)
After microscopically evaluating Steller’s skin, Fieleke returned and shared the good news – his patient was now cancer-free. For Steller, it felt as though a weight had been lifted in just over an hour’s time. Fieleke stitched him back up and the patient was on his way, looking forward to six-month follow-up skin checks after his brush with skin cancer. While Caucasians and men older than 50 have the highest risk of developing melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, anyone can be affected, so it’s good to have a baseline full-body skin check Fieleke says. Risk factors include UV exposure from sunlight and indoor tanning, ‘moley’ skin, a family history of skin cancer, and any previous skin cancers. “There’s sometimes the mentality of ‘I’m too young for skin cancer,’ but with the prevalence of indoor tanning bed use within the past 20 years, it’s always better to be safe than sorry,” Fieleke says. “Both basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma are highly treatable when we catch them early.” While Fieleke is an expert in the advanced surgical and reconstructive treatment of skin cancer, he’s also a general dermatologist for the whole family. During a clinic day, he’ll see a variety of patients – from infants with persistent diaper rash, to teens with acne, to adults suffering from psoriasis and a gamut of other conditions. He says he appreciates the opportunity to hear his patients’ concerns and then collaborate with them for a treatment that either cures or effectively manages their dermatologic condition. Fieleke and his family made Lee’s Summit home in 2011. He opened Cornerstone Dermatology in July 2018 to provide expert medical, surgical and aesthetic dermatology care for his hometown. He wants people to feel a difference at the new office, which combines modern technology and efficiency with customer service and a caring touch. “When a patient leaves Cornerstone, we want them to feel they’ve received really exceptional dermatology care in a comfortable office setting,” he says. “You can trust us for all your skin health needs, from easily treatable conditions to those that require surgical intervention.”

CULINARY CREATIONS ARTICLE BEN OF ARTISAN KOMBUCHA | PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL VERSLUIS
D I Y Ko m b u c h a INGREDIENTS + Eight tea bags or two tablespoons (8 grams) of loose-leaf green, black, white or oolong tea, or a combination of teas. + One SCOBY. If a SCOBY isn't available, purchase online. If you're feeling zesty, try making one with some raw apple cider vinegar or unflavored kombucha. + One gallon filtered or purified water. If filtered water is unavailable, boil 1.25 gallons of water for 15 minutes to kill the chlorine. + One cup sugar cane or honey + One 1-3 gallon glass or ceramic jar. Stay away from plastic or crystallized glass as these can leach into your kombucha.
DIRECTIONS 01 Heat the gallon of water in a pot over the stove until bubbly—no need to boil. 02 Put tea in a tea infuser or tea bag and put in the pot of heated water. 03 Let tea steep for 10 to 15 minutes. 04 Take tea and squeeze out into the pot, being careful not to burst open the tea bags if you're using them. 05 Pour in sugar and stir until dissolved. 06 Let the pot sit until it reaches room temp, or until warm to the touch but not hot—putting a SCOBY in hot water can kill it. 07 Pour tea and sugar into a jar and add SCOBY.
TIPS Depending on the temperature of your house, your kombucha can be done in anywhere from one to three weeks, but usually closer to one if your SCOBY is fairly thick. Green tea makes a thicker SCOBY but tends to have a little bit more of a sour punch to it. If using raw apple cider vinegar or a plain raw kombucha, pour 1/2 cup to 1 cup into your tea and sugar. This takes longer to brew versus using a SCOBY. The taste should be between sweet and sour when it's done and can be flavored with anything you want after that. Feel free to let it go longer if you like it sour, and be sure to taste test periodically to make sure it's the taste you want. Note: If flavoring kombucha, remember to take out the SCOBY and one cup of finished kombucha for your next batch. Flavoring will throw off the SCOBY's taste it gives the kombucha. The cup of finished kombucha acts as a starter or primer for your next batch but is not necessary if the temperature is above 60 degrees. For more information on how to flavor or get that carbonation, I would love to chat at the local farmers market!
