Home grown goodness.
W
hen we hear the words “home grown,” some of us think of bountiful gardens and neighbors with green thumbs who share sacks full of zucchini or tomatoes every summer. Others might think about the farm-to-table movement that has swept the nation over the past few years as chefs work to locally source as much of the food on their menus as possible. And still others might think of the shop local movement that involves everything from locally made whiskey, furniture and toffee to the clever KC pride t-shirts that seem to be everywhere. Here at Lifestyle Publications, where our goal is to focus on local content each and every month, we dedicate this issue to the local vendors, the masters of Pinterest, and some amazing local crafters who call Kansas City their home. There is no doubt about it. We’ve got a city full of inventive, entrepreneurial-minded, hard-working neighbors who are putting their hearts into some amazing locally made products. We hope you’ll take the time to get to know some of these vendors, tell them you read about them in our magazine, and when it is time to buy a unique hostess or housewarming gift or holiday gifts for those out-of-state relatives, consider something from one of these neighbors.

HOME GROWN GOODNESS FROM POWELL GARDENS Powell Gardens’ newest growing venture has produced an abundant crop of organic tomatoes distributed through select Cosentino’s Price Chopper markets and on the menu at some of the area’s most popular restaurants. The Kansas City region’s botanical garden started growing organic tomatoes in a high tunnel operation last year. High tunnels are Quonset-style greenhouses heated and cooled naturally without heaters or fans. The seven tunnels at Powell Gardens are each 200 feet long, 16 feet tall and 31 feet wide with 5-foot-tall side walls. Together, they cover 1 acre of ground. Three additional varieties of “slicers” are in the mix: Red Deuce, BHN 1021 and BHN 589. The BHN varieties were both developed specifically for high tunnels and produce high yields with delicious flavor. The 2015 crop also includes one tunnel each of the heirloom varieties Persimmon, Red Brandywine and Cherokee Purple. A not-for-profit public charity, Powell Gardens since 2009 has grown more than 2,000 types of edible plants in its Heartland Harvest Garden, which is the nation’s largest edible landscape and a place to help tell the story of food. Powell Gardens is selling the tomatoes primarily through Cosentino’s Price Chopper stores (currently including locations in Brookside and Lee’s Summit (Woods Chapel and Raintree locations). Several restaurants, including Jasper’s Restaurant, Port Fonda and Lidia’s, also have featured the tomatoes on menus this summer with more to follow, including Rye, Room 39, Chaz on the Plaza, Café Sebastienne and Eden Alley.

KANSAS CITY SELECTED FOR 2015 NAVY WEEK What is it like to be deployed at sea for six months? What new technologies is the Navy currently developing? These questions and many more will be answered in Kansas City, one of 12 cities selected to host 2015 Navy Week, a Navy signature outreach program. KC Navy Week is scheduled for August 17-23, coincident with the KC Aviation Expo and Air Show, and is designed to provide area residents an opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people, and its importance to national security and prosperity. “Outreach programs like Navy Weeks are extremely important to ensure Americans outside Fleet concentration areas have the opportunity to connect with their Navy,” says Cmdr. James Stockman, director, Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO). “Navy Weeks allow Americans to meet face-to-face with Navy personnel to increase their understanding that their Navy is a warfighting force, deployed around the world and always ready.” 16

The City of Lee’s Summit was recently recognized as one of the first cities in the region to attain a designation as a Solar Ready Community. Lee’s Summit received silver level recognition from the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), which acknowledges the work the City has done to implement best management practices and undertake other actions to facilitate and encourage solar power installation. Cities and counties may earn bronze, silver or gold Solar Ready Community status, based on the number of actions taken. ehind the nondescript storefront of newly opened Mali Thai Bistro on south 291 Highway awaits an authentic experience of Thailand’s culture. Owners Nisa and Doug Hoffman spent several years dreaming of, gathering items for and preparing to create a genuine environment and eating experience of Nisa’s homeland. “We want our customers to feel Thailand when they come in,” says Nisa. “Customers ask if we are the same as Taiwan or China. We are our own country with our own language, our own food, our own culture.” From the outside, the restaurant looks ordinary, but walk through the dark wood double doors and discover the Hoffman’s modern interpretation of this Asian country. It’s simple and not overdone, and each personally selected detail evokes a sense of a culture unlike ours. On many trips back home, Nisa and Doug selected and shipped back treasures now incorporated into the décor: hand-carved wooden elephants and other ornamentation, watercolor paintings on Sa paper, and even the beautiful faux silk server’s uniforms. Thai music plays quietly in the background, and their plans for the bar area include creating an island-feel reminiscent of the many gorgeous Thai islands, one of which is where Nisa’s family has a restaurant. Even the name is true Thai: Mali (pronounced mah-LEE) means “jasmine “or “mother, “ and is a tribute to Nisa’s mother, whose fragrant jasmine flowers always flourished in the front of their family’s home. Nisa’s family owns restaurants in Thailand so she’s been immersed in the business most of her life. She has taken great care to recreate recipes that will provide their guests with a true Thai eating opportunity. The extraordinarily polite servers make the dining experience a pleasure. Ours brought me and my guest a cup of Thai hot tea (jasmine) to enjoy while we perused the menu, which includes a dozen appetizers and two pages of entrees from which to choose. We decided to share several classic dishes. For our appetizer, the Mali Thai Roll ($7.95) made a wonderfully fresh start that wasn’t filling. Made of crab meat, cream cheese, cucumber, bean sprouts and carrot wrapped in rice paper, it is served with a fabulous sweet chili sauce and crushed roasted peanuts. The waitress next brought us Tom Kha Soup ($9.95/pot). Soup never looked so pretty served in an authentic Thai soup pot imported from Thailand, of course. The soup was a delightful flavor combination unlike my Midwestern taste buds are accustomed: a rich coconut milk broth flavored with lemongrass, kaffir limes, fresh chil-

ies, galangal (an Indonesian plant in the ginger family) and sprinkled with cilantro and spring onions. Of course we had to sample their Pad Thai, the famous rice noodle dish stir fried with meat, egg, bean sprouts, spring onion and cabbage with added tamarind sauce for a tangy aftertaste, served with sliced lemon and ground peanuts. It’s fun to try this dish at a variety of Thai restaurants and compare; this one has the peanuts mixed into the dish, not sprinkled on top. It was delicious. And another entrée was equally good: the Garlic Shrimp is flash fried and then sautéed in delicious garlic sauce, served over a bed of perfectly steamed vegetables. All the ingredients were incredibly fresh, and the sauce made the perfect finish. Entrees are offered with a “select a protein” (chicken, pork, beef, tofu or shrimp) option. Lunch prices range from $8.95$12.95 and dinner $10.95-$18.95. The food is cooked with great care and is not for the hurried customer, but it is definitely worth the wait and meant to be savored. I overheard another customer say as they were leaving, “This is a nice setting, and the food is great. We’ll be back.” I quite agree. Some would say the real measure of a Thai restaurant is how spicy hot the sauce is made. I confess that my appreciation of Thai food is more for its fresh uniqueness, so I cannot attest to the hotness of the sauce. You’ll have to go try it for yourself.

POST COFFEE COMPANY A DELIGHTFUL RESPITE AND PLACE FOR REPOSE

offee has, for centuries, been bringing minds together and lifting the spirits of those who embrace it. The resurgence of true coffee aficionados is understandable, with the higher level shops that have opened across our metro in recent years. These baristas are bringing a new appreciation and understanding of that proverbial cup of coffee. Post Coffee Company is one such coffee shop. Owners Tanner Stevens and Levi Holland have honed their skills in the preparation of this delightful roasted stuff, each finding their niche in their own personal way. They recently opened Post in Chipman Commons, just east of the Douglas Street intersection, in an eclectic space they have refurbished. Garage doors open to an airy patio featuring long, hand-forged tables. On any given day it is evident that neighbors enjoy using the shop as a meeting place. Their tables were lovingly hand-crafted for them by locally made Ash Tables, and they are interspersed with chairs, couches and benches, which invite visitors to stay and enjoy the free WiFi, hold Bible studies, business meetings, or just simply meditate and absorb the flavors and atmosphere. They began serving their flavorful treats at the Lee’s Summit Farmer’s Market out of their 1976 green Volkswagen Westfalia. They initially roasted from Tanner’s home and now have a permanent roasting area in their new space. They still plan to serve CONTINUED > at special events through the summer at the market.

“Our approach to Post is simple: to source high quality beans, roast it to our specifications, then feature the complexity of the coffee by using a simple menu,” says Stevens. “The majority of our beans are sourced from a company called Bodhileaf Coffee Traders, located in Placentia, California. We roast twice a week, and since every drink is made to order, we have to pay serious attention to detail in the creation of each drink.” They feature a simple offering of drinks on their menu, and coordinate with other community members to bring local products to the shop, including Poppy’s Ice Cream. Stevens grew up in Olathe and has since relocated to Lee’s Summit from the River Market area. Holland grew up in Iowa and has also relocated to Lee’s Summit from Syracuse, New York. With a Bachelor of Arts in intercultural studies and sociology from MidAmerica Nazarene University, Stevens enjoys the world vision he shares with Holland through the coffee they serve. Holland earned his Bachelor of Science in youth ministry from Olivet Nazarene University, and holds a Masters of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary. “For both of us, a coffee shop became a way to be involved in the local economy, within a specific neighborhood to invest and relate to and with the people,” Holland says. “We like the eclectic gathering of people we attract. From hipsters, families with small children, business professionals and senior citizens. We like that all people feel welcome in our space.” “We are currently only doing special events at the Farmers Market, but we are extremely grateful to have had the experience we did last summer and fall getting our start. The relationships we formed in that space gave us incredible momentum going into the opening of our storefront.” Both young men are grateful for the amount of positive response they have received from not only Lee’s Summit but also the greater KC Metro area. “We are committed to this space and are committed to growing our neighborhood and its local economy and the continuation of making KC great! Thank you for supporting us,” says Stevens.

“T
hat’s unacceptable. Let’s fix it.” Richard Shipley and Dan Lynch, co-founders of LocalStart.org, said those words in the fall of 2011 after an internet search for “made in Kansas City” produced one result. Just one. “It boggled my mind,” says Shipley. Their disbelief fueled more research, this time in the Yellow Pages. “It turned into an 11-month research project,” he says. “We were organizing the info we found in an Excel spreadsheet, then created a website—a Google site—to share what we’d learned. We were looking for free ways to get the information out there. Problem is, the people we included didn’t even know that they were listed on the website.” Fast forward to June 2013, when Shipley and Lynch went to Hack Kansas City: National Day of Civic Hacking. There he met Katie Greer, a graphic designer who donated the logo that is now used to identify a growing stable of locally produced products. “We relaunched the next day with the Made in KC initiative,” says Shipley. Thou Mayest coffee was the first to pick it up; and now 200 companies place the iconic logo on their packaging and products to proudly declare their origins. There are names you’ve seen here in the pages of Lifestyle Publications: Good Dog 2 Go, Annie’s Barn and Our Sassy Pantry. There are names everyone recognizes: The Rosterie, Indigo Wild, Clear10 Vodka, and Oklahoma Joe’s BBQ. There are food companies and production companies, coffee roasters and bow tie makers. The majority of these companies, according to Shipley, are run by folks with day jobs who create beautiful things at home and in their spare time. Between the time Thou Mayest joined and fall of 2014, LocalStart.org had relaunched and shot a video to introduce the initiative to othCONTINUED >

...makers aren’t just artists; a maker is someone who has a passion to create... ers. Shipley started making connections, and in doing so realized the logo was really just the first step in fixing a bigger problem. “As I talked to people and spent a good chunk of my time connecting with other businesses, I found an underground Chamber of Commerce of sorts: a group of businesses putting in sweat equity with one common goal, which was to make Kansas City a better place.” Shipley and his team launched micro pop-ups to introduce people to locally produced products and soon had a revelation. “It’s not the introduction that’s the problem,” he says. “It’s the logistics. We’d use repurposed bookshelves and stock products on a consignment basis, and they’d sell out within 48 hours. We couldn’t restock fast enough, but the bigger problem was this: there was no distribution system or logistics to set up to support keeping local products in multiple locations. Think of it this way: if you are a retailer and you want to carry local products, you have to deal with multiple local companies. If you stock product from ten companies and those products sell out, you have to place ten more orders. The work multiplies exponentially, which is a barrier to getting more local products placed on a consistent schedule.” With a background in freight management, Shipley is working on a solution. The idea is to set up a distribution center stocked 32
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2015
with made in KC products and to partner with Phil Pisciotta of Fresh Food Express to distribute those products to local retailers. “Buying local has become trendy,” says Shipley, “but without a strong infrastructure to support it, it won’t last. We have to be smart and we have to realize that makers aren’t just artists; a maker is someone who has a passion to create or needs an outlet, whether what they create is art or food or electronics or community programs. The future of this kind of economy is so exciting,” says Shipley. “Sixty-eight percent of every dollar spent on locally produced products stays in the community. Every one of us has the power in our wallet to build a strong local economy simply by choosing to shop local instead of online or with national chains. The perception is that shopping local or with a small mom and pop isn’t the most convenient way to shop, but that’s not always the case. There are interesting changes that are bringing the best of online shopping—selection, convenience, quality, and price— to mom and pop stores, and making locally made goods the reason to shop small gives these establishments a niche market that isn’t available in the big boxes. Truth is, by shopping locally we can spend the same amount of money and get a product that’s been produced locally and customized to our specifications.” CONTINUED > Learn more at LocalStart.org.

OKOBOJI

The word “Okoboji” derives from Dakota Sioux language meaning “great waters, reeds or rushes.” 40
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2015
“Okoboji” collectively refers to the chain of interconnected lakes and townships that surround them. The lakes cover 12,000 acres with nearly 70 miles of shoreline. The largest are Spirit Lake (northern most, reaching into Minnesota and spanning 5,685 acres), West Lake Okoboji (spring fed and 136 feet at its deepest, where some brave souls actually scuba dive) and East Lake Okoboji, separated by Highway 71, which you can cruise under while boating from West to East Lake on your way to the Barefoot Bar (if so inclined). The word “Okoboji” derives from Dakota Sioux language meaning “great waters, reeds or rushes.” But in my family lexicon, Okoboji means “vacation” in every sense of the word.
tractions, featuring a 65-foot Ferris wheel overlooking the water and one of America’s oldest wooden rollercoasters, the Legend, with its iconic apex, “The Point of no Return” – a must for every bucket list. If dry land is more your speed, there are campgrounds and lodging for every group and budget, whether you’re looking for rustic, turn-of-the-century cabins or more modern accommodations. Any golfers in your crew? Five nearby courses beckon, as do more than 50 miles of hiking/biking trails, seven state parks, serene picnic areas and nature observation points, art and history museums, live music and even live theatre. Check out all that Okoboji has to offer at: VacationOkoboji.com.
BLUE WATER PLAYGROUND
VACATION LEGACIES
Opportunities to relax here are abundant, as are water activities and lakeside attractions to satisfy the most adventurous spirit. That is, if you decide to venture from the lazy spot you’ve laid claim to on the deck, beach or dock. You can enjoy boat cruises along West Lake’s many bays and coves, water skiing, swimming, sailing (complete with yacht club, sailing school and weekend regattas), canoeing, kayaking, and acclaimed fishing for walleye, northern pike, large and smallmouth bass and more. Not to mention the shopping! The dining! The nightlife! No boat? No problem! Local marinas, resorts and specialty shops rent or sell all your water sport and transportation needs. There are summer camps for children and teens, such as the YMCA’s Camp Foster, central to family traditions for generations. Arnolds Park, a lakeside landmark and amusement park, has entertained visitors since the late 1800s. The park boasts more than 30 rides and at-
Marilyn Witt Tampke, of Leawood, has visited Okoboji her entire life, as have her five children. While growing up in Omaha, her parents would stay at The Inn, a vintage resort built more than 100 years ago. By the 1980s, the Witt family invested in their own summer home at West Lake’s Sandpiper Cove. “One of the things that makes Okoboji so special is that it doesn’t change, year after year, decade after decade,” says Tampke. “Beautiful lake houses of all shapes and sizes line the shore. No high rises, no huge resorts. Just ‘lakey’ places.” Among her dearest rituals: “I loved going to Arnolds Park as a child, my children love it and hopefully in a few years I will bring my grandchildren to the park. Okoboji is my true north.” Marilyn’s husband, Scott, bikes the trail around the lake over and over again. “He loves Okoboji almost as much as I do,” she says. little girl from Council Bluffs, Iowa in the 1930s, Dolly recalls staying in cottages on West Lake’s Manhattan Beach long before the Okoboji Yacht Club settled there. “The roads around the lake were poor in those days, so steamboats ferried passengers to and fro. The cottages where we stayed had a flag on the dock that we raised to signal the Queen to come by and pick us up,” she remembers. “It was such a thrill to ride on the Queen.” The original steam-driven boats of the era were retired as road transportation improved. But the community has kept the excursion boat tradition alive. Today 42

the Queen II sails across West Lake a few times each day, as the captain shares maritime history with tourists and toots the boat’s distinct horn when fans wave from shore. FRIENDLY OASIS IS NO MYTH
A charming bit of folklore surrounds the Iowa Great Lakes and is worth exploring during your stay. Published documents and word of mouth through the years attest that West Lake Okoboji is one of only three “blue lakes” in the world. Likely not, say experts from the Iowa Department of
Natural Resources. But the water quality has officially been rated “exceptional” for the region, providing bragging rights all the same. And while you’re conducting water studies, consider obtaining a degree from that hallowed (albeit mythical) institution, the University of Okoboji. You too can join one of the most prestigious alumni clubs around, where most students “major” in goodwill and celebration. Many U of O festivities (as well as “Campus” attire and memorabilia) sprung up nearly 40 years ago, thanks to the playful imaginations of Herman and Emil Richter. The Richter brothers proudly own and operate The Three Sons clothing store
in nearby Milford, Iowa, “The place to go when it’s time to look good on Campus.” Campus spirit has inspired annual events including the U of O Winter Games, a regional Youth Soccer Tournament, the Campus Bike Ride and Homecoming Triathlon/Marathon to celebrate the camaraderie that comes from just a few pleasant hours spent at Okoboji U. From Nutty Bars along Queen’s Court to treats at The Sugar Shack in the Central Emporium, Okoboji’s friendly hosts, scenic views and proud history leave an indelible mark on visitors. Just as the glaciers did in northwestern Iowa over 14,000 years ago. August 2015 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

He’s far from shy, making him the standout socialite at the shelter. One look into those brown eyes, and we promise you won’t be able to resist 2-year-old Reece’s spell. He may seem young, but this bundle of love is already wise beyond his years. He’s a bold and beautiful big guy, poised to impress you with his people skills. With his contagious exuberance, he’s ready to accompany you on all your adventures – “Road Tripper’” is his middle name. Like his kitty counterpart, Reece prefers to have his humans all to himself (being an only child has its perks), but he would be willing to share if he met the right pooch. He’s been at the shelter since August 2014. Come visit him in Independence for smooches and cuteness. 46

We moved back from the west coast in 2004 to Lee’s Summit for work. LSL: What’s on the floor of your car right now? JG: What’s not on the floor of my car? With two kids in sports I have a soccer ball, stuffed animals, blankets, some shoes, candy wrappers, empty water bottles... Yes, it’s true my car is a mess. I clean it when I know I’m giving someone other than my kids a ride. Let’s be real here, most people do the same but won’t admit it. LSL: What is your favorite ‘pamper yourself’ or splurge item? JG: Mani and pedi and a facial or massage. I call it my “me” time. 48

Take Stock in Your Valuables This Summer ARTICLE TRACEY KAHLE
S
ummertime is peak time for home sales. Real estate signs pop up like daffodils in the spring and continue long into the summer months. If your home is on the market, there is a never-ending laundry list of “to-do’s.” If you’re not moving, you in all likelihood are not off the hook either. Two out of three homeowners purchase their home during the summer months. If that includes you, your insurance policy renews at that same time of year. Your insurance agent will likely send you a statement showing the coverages of your home and contents for the upcoming year along with the annual premium rate. Although this is a very important document to review in general, it is even more important to review the scheduled items section - your most valuabled personal possessions. Furs, rugs, fine art, wine collections and jewelry could very well be a part of your scheduled coverage. The special coverage that protects these valuables should reflect the current cost to replace them. Your appraisal helps define your insurance policy needs and assures a comparable replacement in the event of a loss. Weather, the economy, production costs and collectability are all factors that influence the markets of these collections. Due to the changes in these markets, if you have not had your appraisals updated in the past two to three years, it is likely that you are not fully covered under your current policy limits. Seeking out a professional appraiser for your valuable personal property is essential. Unlike real estate appraisers, personal property appraisers are not licensed and there is very little federal or state oversight of these appraisers. So, how do you find a professional appraiser for your most treasured possessions? Your appraiser should have the experience and qualifications to do the job right. Beyond education and experience in the field specialty they practice, your appraiser should be formally educated in appraisal methodology, appraisal report writing, and be USPAP compliant. Look for an appraiser who has undertaken the accreditation requirements of professional appraisal organizations like the International Society of Appraisers, American Society of Appraisers, and Appraisers Association of America. After all, not only is your appraisal an important document that will help protect you, your appraisal is your peace of mind.

The Center for Rheumatic Disease CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE OF CHRONIC PAIN ARTICLE ELIZABETH ROSENBERGER | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTINA SANDBERG
D
r. Michael Smith with the Center for Rheumatic Disease says he would be happy to be out of a job if they ever found a cure. However, until then, he will continue to treat and advocate against the painful and debilitating diseases affecting his patients. Millions of Americans suffer from some form of rheumatic disease, and thankfully, Smith says new research and treatments are making an impact. Smith’s new office, located at 500 NE M- 291 Highway, specializes in treating patients who suffer with various types of rheumatic disease. According to Smith, more than 100 diseases are classified as rheumatic diseases, including many types of arthritis. Other rheumatic diseases are considered autoimmune diseases, meaning that the body’s own immune system is damaging other parts of the body. While his main office located on the Plaza, Smith is expectant to make an impact in Lee’s Summit and the surrounding communities. He is also on staff at St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City and St. Luke’s East. “Rheumatic diseases wind up involving the joints,” says Smith. “That can be defined as joint problems caused by infection, autoimmune disorders, or crystal diseases, such as gout.” He explains that ,many diseases start with arthritis ends up affecting the patient's skin, heart, kidney or lungs.

Though he was raised in Buffalo, NY, Smith treats his patients with the care and concern of a native Midwesterner. His warm and engaging personality not only makes a patient feel right at home, it helps them understand what is going on in their body and how treatment is going to help fight it. The new Lee's Summit office will have openings for appointments three days a week with a goal to have full time hours in the near future. Smith and his staff recently welcomed Dr. Kalista Engelman as a new addition to the practice. “I have the best staff anyone could have,” Smith says. “They are highly skilled and personable and I wouldn’t have the success I do without them.” Treatments for various diseases include osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis and Crohn’s colitis. Smith says that in the last decade the landscape for treatment has advanced in the patient's favor so much that a patient is more than just managing pain but living a normal life and normal life span. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common of the diseases Smith treats. About 70 percent of those over age 70 have x-ray evidence of osteoarthritis. Because of this, it is the main reason older people experience mobility issues. As a rheumatologist, Smith can detect CONTINUED >

arthritis and prescribe the proper treatment. In 2013, the American College of Rheumatology reported that rheumatoid arthritis affects 1.3 million adult Americans and remains a serious disease; however, treatment advances not only slow the disease but also can arrest it. Smith says with all the new treatments, they have a better understanding of when and how to use the treatments and what treatment to use in order to ‘target’ the inflammation. “There are a class of drugs that have been used worldwide to treat inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and these other types of diseases,” says Smith. “They are able to reduce inflammation and stop disease progression.” For more information visit CenterForRheumatic.com or call 816.531.0930.

Community Foundation Makes It Easy to “Grow Your Giving” ARTICLE SUSAN MOTLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY MCKENNA MATHEWSON

hen Bill Gates, Warren Buffet or Oprah Winfrey give money to worthy causes, it’s usually millions, or even billions, of dollars. But most charitable giving comes from everyday people in much smaller amounts. And that is at the heart of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. The organization was started in 1978 by founders who wanted to help improve the metropolitan area but believed charitable giving should be the responsibility of many, not just a select few. They passed a hat, collected $210, and the Community Foundation was born. It has grown to a premier organization, consistently ranking in the top one percent of community foundations in the country in asset size ($2.4 billion), gifts received and grants made. “We recognized early on that most donors in Kansas City already knew what causes they wanted to support. They simply needed a vehicle that would allow them to give efficiently,” says Debbie Wilkerson, president and CEO, and lifelong resident of the area. And giving efficiently is just what the Community Foundation provides, making every gift count, whether it’s $25 or $25 million. “Charitable giving accounts help donors organize and maximize their giving. The money in each account is invested, either in our investment pools or with the donor’s financial advisor, allowing the donor’s charitable impact to grow. We don’t require a minimum balance, and we encourage our donors to make grants to any public charities they care about as often as they want and in any amount,” says Wilkerson. “When compared to private foundations, charitable giving accounts are inexpensive, confidential, and quick and easy to establish. And finally, at the end of each year, donors don’t have to sort through boxes of receipts to determine their total charitable tax deduction. Instead, they have one simple statement outlining all of their giving for the year.” In addition to cash, donors can put stock or other assets into their funds. “Our expertise in receiving complex gifts is exceptional,” explains Wilkerson. “We’re actually the first and only charity to receive, hold and sell a major league sports team – the Kansas City Royals! And we help our donors ensure they are receiving the maximum tax benefits for their donations.”

The Community Foundation has regional boards representing all areas of the metro, including the Eastland Community Foundation, the Community Foundation of Johnson County, the Community Foundation of Wyandotte County and Northland Community Foundation. They also have two cultural boards, The Black Community Fund and the Hispanic Development Fund. For those wanting help with charitable giving, but not wanting to open their own fund, the Community Foundation administers funds and accepts donations for a wide range of causes and organizations. Examples are Feed Northland Kids, which works in conjunction with Harvesters to provide BackSnacks to approximately 3,000 school age children each week, and the Hispanic Development Scholarship Fund, which recently presented $420,000 in college scholarships to 326 deserving students. The Community Foundation also offers an array of Donor Education Programs to help individuals and families get the most out of their giving. GIVING CARDS
Continuing its efforts to make giving easy for everyone, the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation created a unique Giving Card program in 2007. Much like retail gift cards, Giving Cards can be given to celebrate birthdays, holidays or other special occasions. Giving Cards can be redeemed to benefit any 501(c)(3) public charity in the United States (including schools, churches and synagogues). Card recipients simply go online to redeem the card for their chosen charity. “The response has been very positive, as it’s a step beyond the ‘Here’s a gift in your name’ philosophy,” Wilkerson says. The program continues to grow each year, peaking during the holiday season. Giving Cards have become popular with companies that choose to customize Giving Cards with their logos and then use them as gifts for employees or clients. Wilkerson, who has worked for the Community Foundation in various roles since 1998, became president and CEO in 2012. She says she loves seeing the impact that donors at every level are making in our city. “First and foremost, it’s our neighbors here in Kansas City who, year after year, continue to awe and inspire us with their generosity.” For more information, visit GrowYourGiving.org

2015 Infiniti QX80 FULL-SIZE SUV DELIVERS WHEN IT COMES TO COMFORT, LUXURY ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
T
his full-size SUV shines from the inside out and delivers luxury on par with anything in its segment. The Infiniti QX80 is a vehicle of contradictions and it always leaves me with mixed feelings. I’ve never been a fan of the exterior styling, yet the interior beckons with soft leather and wood trim. The V-8 engine guzzles fuel but it is extremely smooth and strong enough to tow 8,500 pounds. In summary, this full-size SUV shines from the inside out and delivers luxury on par with anything in its segment. Styling is certainly subjective. Infiniti updated the QX80 with a new grille that reflects the design language of the Q50 sedan. It’s an improvement, for sure, but the big nose is still a bit imposing. The QX80 used to be called the QX56. The new name is part of Infiniti’s revamped nomenclature. The SUV comes in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, with a direct-injection, 5.6-liter engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The 400-horsepower V-8 can tow up to 8,500 pounds. Fuel economy is rated at 14 miles per gallon in the city and 20 on the highway. Base prices start at $63,250 for rear-wheel drive and

$66,350 for all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive test vehicle from Infiniti’s press f leet had a sticker price of $77,185. On the road, the QX80 felt as if it were gliding over the pavement, even with the optional 22-inch wheels, yet the vehicle didn’t seem overly soft or mushy in turns. That’s a benefit of the optional hydraulic body motion control system that links shock absorbers from one side to those on the other, keeping body lean in check without forcing a stiff ride. The smooth ride was enhanced by a lack of wind and road noise. The optional Driver’s Assistance Package includes blind-spot warning, backup collision avoidance intervention, forward emergency braking and forward predictive collision warning. The backup intervention applies the brakes if something is behind the vehicle, and forward emergency braking does the same when it senses an imminent collision. The best part of the QX is the lush interior that has seating for eight with a second-row bench seat. Stratford Burl wood trim was a tasteful accent to the wheat-colored leather interior of the dark blue test vehicle. The fit and finish are all that CONTINUED >

one expects in a full-size luxury SUV. Standard equipment includes a navigation system, a Bose stereo with 13 speakers and an Around View monitor that gives a birds-eye view of the vehicle. Moving object detection alerts the driver to approaching vehicles in parking lots. Around View was especially helpful in tight confines.
The front seats could benefit from bottom cushions with deeper contours. The split-folding second seat had plenty of legroom, and the power-folding third seat was big enough to be usable. There is not much cargo space with the third seat in place. The test vehicle was equipped with the theater package that had 7-inch monitors in the back of each front headrest. Games or videos can be watched separately on either screen. PRICE: The base price of the test car was $63,250. Parting Thoughts
Government Jam WORDS RACHEL C. MURPHY
I
’m an avid gardener. Avid, meaning ‘enthusiastic’, not ‘successful’. I shouldn’t say that. I’m great with herbs and this year, my squash and tomatoes are all blooming nicely. The wait for fresh produce became a bit too tiring and I stumbled upon something to make the time pass more quickly. As I walk my dog each day on more or less the same route, I pass a small roadside park. It’s a modest affair: a couple of swings, with a jungle gym rooted in recycled tires a few yards down. Behind it lies only forest, the kind that the deer, squirrels and beavers that I see intermittently love to hide in during the day. It’s also the home of blackberry brambles. I remember picking blackberries at my grandmother’s house when I was young. They were never sweet until it was hot and sticky and we would spray down with the Ozark elixir of Avon Skin-So-Soft and try to pick our fill. They don’t call them brambles for nothing. They don’t yield their treasures easily, instead guarding them with thorns and stickers. Well, nothing has changed since I was a child. Along the walking path, a few weeks ago, I began to spy bright red berries. They called to me to come off the pavement and into the grass to see what sweetness they may hold. Off I trotted, faithful pooch in tow, to see what I would find. I found a treasure trove. Fat blackberries nestled under leaves and among the bright red unripe berries. I tried one straight off the bush. It was sweet, much sweeter than the mutantly large Driscoll berries safe in their plastic cases at the store. They were smaller, but they tasted like nature and summer and endless youth.

So I did was any sane person would do: I took the unused doggie poop bag and started picking. I figured that I would pick a cup or two, maybe enough to make a small pie. Instead, the savage hunger of a forager took over. I was Katniss Everdeen, foraging for her family and for survival. I was a gatherer, going back to my roots. Getting groceries had never been so fulfilling, as I stood in the heat and thorns, picking berries, brushing away spiders and watching aubergine juice run down my fingers. My dog was confused. This became a routine. Take the dog for a walk, bring an extra bag. Pick a pound of berries. New ones ripened every two or three days and I went back for them. It was either me or the birds. The birds don’t pay taxes in this neighborhood, so I figured that I had a right to them. Soon I had several pounds of berries, ready for whatever I could make them into. The answer, my friends, is jam. I made jam. I’m not sure why I always had the image of a long laborious process for making jam, but I did. After spilling a few cupfuls into a cobbler, I set about the arduous labor of smashing blackberries and setting them to boil. Who am I kidding? That was fun. A few minutes later, after the addition of pectin, a dash of sugar and a few sage leaves, I had what looked to be, by all rights, jam. I canned it for preservation and looked on my accomplishment with a sense of pride. Not only had I made delicious jam, I had made it for nearly free! Government jam is the best jam. What’s the lesson in all this? Besides the fact that you should always have an extra doggie bag, it’s that there are little gifts all around you, if you slow down enough to see them. Look into the trees a little. You never know what you might find.
