It can be stressful getting children to the dentist to receive the dental care that they need. One way of motivating children who are afraid of dental treatment is to use colored fillings. Children enjoy participating in the process and selecting colors that reflect their unique personalities.
Home. So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.
Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”As we thought about homewe wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the aesthetic and design, but also finding calm with organization, and feeling refreshed by adding a new paint color or creating a completely new table setting simply by adding a new dinner plate on top of your everyday set.

Kansas City makes getting organized a breeze.
Take a look at the closets in your home right now. Do you feel relaxed or frustrated? Inspired Closets Kansas City will come to the rescue, for that crazy closet, or garage, pantry, entryway or home office. Even if you don’t know where to start, they will.
Owner Jen Macias-Wetzel takes pride in personally assessing each client’s situation and partnering with them to come up with a plan that creates a serene and organized environment while maximizing space.
“Our experienced designers start by visiting your home to understand your specific needs and challenges you face in the space you’re looking to organize. Based on the assessment, we create a customized 3D design tailored to your lifestyle and your budget,” she explained. “We then invite you to our showroom where you’ll have the ability to see firsthand what our finished product will look like and modify the design so it’s perfect for your space and needs. Once the design is finalized, we will schedule installation, typically within four to six weeks. Throughout the process, our installation team will keep you informed and provide tips for preparing your space. On installation day, our team will handle everything with care, minimizing disruptions and leaving your space clean and organized.”
Another great motivator is that a recent study by the National Realtors Association found that homeowners recoup 85% of the cost of a new closet when they sell their home.
Some helpful tips from her:
Take inventory of your closet and declutter at least once a year. This helps keep things manageable and not overwhelming. I also love keeping my closet seasonal.
For pantries, I’m a big fan of a label-maker! Using storage containers and revolving trays helps keep items visible and organized.
Jen purchased this existing business in July 2024 after a friend told her about it. She was contemplating her next career move and felt this was a great fit.
“I decided to ‘secret shop’ them and remodel my own closet to gain first-hand experience. The team was attentive, friendly, and meticulous in their approach, and the quality of the product exceeded my expectations. I was genuinely surprised at how much my mood changed every time I walked into my newly organized closet, and I couldn’t wait to share this uplifting experience with others,” she smiled.
She continued, “Our materials are sourced from a centralized manufacturing facility nestled in the heart of Grand Rapids, Michigan, known as the furniture capital of North America. With over 35 years of experience in the cabinetry industry, the Inspired Closets brand was launched nine years ago to focus solely on delivering a superior customer experience tailored to individual homeowners. This centralized manufacturing approach not only allows us to maintain stringent quality control but also mitigates supply chain challenges, ensuring that we consistently provide our customers with exceptional products and service. Our commitment to quality and luxury truly sets us apart, which is why we also offer a lifetime warranty.”
Previously she worked in luxury real estate and sales roles, which taught her the importance of personalized service and attention to detail. She also chairs the Municipal Art Commission of Kansas City. She and her husband, Richard, an architect by trade and founder of a commercial general contracting firm, enjoy traveling and spending time with their five children, each pursuing their unique paths, whether it's captaining ships in Florida or studying media in D.C.

We sat down with Megan Mosier of Megan Gensky Interiors for insider design tips and to learn more about the design services so offers her clients.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE SERVICES YOU OFFER TO YOUR CLIENTS?
I provide comprehensive design services, taking clients through every step of the process—from new builds and remodels to selecting furnishings and decor. Additionally, I offer specialized Christmas decorating services to bring extra warmth and festive charm to homes during the holidays.
WHAT CAN CLIENTS EXPECT WHEN WORKING WITH YOU FROM START TO FINISH?
Clients can expect a smooth, stressfree experience as their vision unfolds. I focus on delivering a seamless design process, ensuring their project comes together exactly as they envisioned, every step of the way.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE DESIGN STYLE, AND HOW DO YOU PERSONALIZE IT FOR EACH CLIENT?
My design style is influenced by my time working with Magnolia, which initially drew me to modern farmhouse aesthetics inspired by Joanna Gaines. Over time, this evolved into what I now consider my signature style—European Cottage. I always listen closely to my clients’ preferences and work to incorporate any specific elements they love, whether it’s a color, texture, or piece of furniture. I aim to make every project feel unique, which keeps the process fresh and exciting as I blend personal touches into the overall design.
“For remodels, I believe paint and lighting are the most impactful updates— both can transform the entire feel of a space.”
remodels and new builds, lighting truly makes a statement. You might have similar white walls as your neighbors, but your choice of light fixtures can add personality and character to your home, setting it apart.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NEWEST DESIGN TRENDS WE SHOULD BE LOOKING OUT FOR?
We’re seeing an emphasis on layered trim details and a shift toward warmer color palettes. These trends are giving spaces a cozier, more inviting atmosphere while maintaining a modern aesthetic.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE HOMEOWNERS ABOUT THE BEST PLACES TO INVEST IN UPGRADES OR HOME IMPROVEMENTS?
For remodels, I believe paint and lighting are the most impactful updates—both can transform the entire feel of a space. When it comes to new builds, however, the kitchen should be the top priority. But across both
HOW DO YOU STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH CURRENT INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS AND INDUSTRY INNOVATIONS?
I draw inspiration from everywhere—whether it’s during travels, a visit to a new restaurant, or just exploring daily life. But I especially stay informed by attending design markets. These events are a treasure trove of emerging trends and styles, offering valuable insights into what's next in the world of interior design.

There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment.
The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!
By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.
Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are

many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the home, house plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.
Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends. Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.
Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.
Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls.
No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace?
Happy gardening!

When a family falls on hard times, often there is no one to assist. Or if a professional loses a job to downsizing, and has no backup plan, he or she is too ashamed to ask. Good people sometimes simply need a hand up. The world can be a hard place, unless you find a soft place to fall. Enter Flourish Furniture Bank.
Amy Cox, Executive Director, explained how this giving, volunteer-driven organization came into being.
“Flourish began when a gentleman who worked for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) often observed families that were housed but were living without furniture and basic home essentials,” she noted. “This meant the entire family was sleeping and eating on the floor and were eating out of disposable containers with no cookware to prepare meals. He observed the impact of living in this way on both the adults and the children in these families and approached his church, Resurrection, A United Methodist Church, to see if they would support a ministry to help bridge this gap in the community.”
Resurrection responded to this need and a ministry was created, originally called My Father’s House. After its rebranding as Flourish, this group of volunteers became a 501c3 nonprofit in order to continue to grow in the community in November of 2019.
Flourish is the only non-profit furniture bank in Kansas City and offers an entire home of furniture and home essentials such as towels, bedding, dishes, cookware, small appliances, artwork, decor and much more to families that have experienced housing instability.
“Every family that comes to Flourish does so through a referral from a case manager at one of our more than 80 social service agency partners,” Cox continued. “Those partners serve kids aging out of foster care, veterans, individuals who have experienced domestic violence, and many others. This service they offer victims is unique to other donation services, as they assist the individual person in need with a private appointment, allowing them to make the decision for themselves which is very empowering for a lot of people coming from controlling or abusive situations.
SATURDAY , APRIL26
Another service that makes them truly unique from other donation sites is that they will actually arrange for items to be picked up from your home, so you don’t need to do any heavy lifting and hauling. Find details about this on their website.
“In 2024, Flourish provided a full home of furniture and furnishings to 1,302 and have scaled our capacity to be able to serve 1,500 families in 2025. At the same time, Flourish is known as the place where Compassion Meets Sustainability,” she enamored. “As such, we were able to keep more than 1 million pounds of items from going to landfills in 2024 through our workshops where we repair and repurpose items. Some of those workshop areas include woodworking, electrical, dish packing, and sewing/upholstery.”
“This spring, we will host our Second Annual Running of the Beds event on Saturday, April 26 at the Summit Church in Lee’s Summit,” she smiled. “It’s a bed race on wheels!”

Kitchen design has entered a transformative era, where innovation meets artistry to create spaces that are not only functional but also personal and sustainable. With advancements in technology, materials and craftsmanship, today’s kitchens are tailored to meet the evolving needs and tastes of homeowners.
According to interior designer Laura McCroskey, kitchens today are about more than just cooking—they’re an expression of personal lifestyle.
“Kitchen design has entered an exciting time where the possibilities feel limitless,” says McCroskey. “For me, the design process starts before lines are ever drawn on a construction document. I believe in creating spaces that enhance life, both functionally and aesthetically. The design process begins with a discussion about what a space needs to do, and what aesthetic will bring a spark to the homeowner. I also firmly believe that when designing a kitchen, one should walk out a recipe to
ideas with practical implementation to achieve the best results.
Technology, sustainability and customization are driving the revolution in kitchen design. Advanced appliances are at the forefront, enhancing convenience while aligning with a growing emphasis on eco-friendliness.
make sure everything is in the right place to suit one’s lifestyle. Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.”
Modern kitchens emphasize zoning, or the creation of dedicated areas for preparation, cooking and storage, to enhance workflow and functionality. These zones not only improve efficiency but also contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.
Cutting-edge rendering software, utilizing technology similar to that used in gaming, allows homeowners to visualize their dream kitchens in hyper-realistic detail. While these tools inspire creativity, McCroskey advises balancing ambitious
“From vacuum-sealing drawers that preserve food and reduce waste to smart appliances controlled by your phone, the emphasis is on efficiency and sustainability. Functional storage built seamlessly into marble countertops and oversized workstation sinks are making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Thoughtful features like composting compartments and advanced food preservation methods reflect a broader effort to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.”
Custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of space minimizes waste while optimizing functionality.
“Forget the limits of traditional cabinetry. Blind corners, tiny nooks and hidden areas are now designed to maximize storage. Automated drawers and pop-up outlets
are becoming increasingly common, marrying convenience with sleek aesthetics.”
Design trends have also evolved, becoming more flexible to reflect individual tastes.
“While white kitchens remain timeless and black adds drama, bleached woods continue to be popular. Style trends are no longer as rigid—whether you prefer modern, transitional, or traditional designs, you can create a kitchen tailored to your unique vision. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with today’s tools and technologies. The goal is to create spaces that resonate deeply with the people who live in them.”
The kitchen is the heart of every home and represents a space of endless possibility. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse or somewhere in between, the tools and technologies available today make it easier than ever to bring your vision to life.
As a parent, it’s not always easy to tell if your child’s sniffles and sneezes are from a cold or seasonal allergies. While both can cause similar symptoms, understanding the differences can help you manage your child’s health more effectively. At Community Choice Pediatrics, we’re here to empower you with the knowledge you need to make the best choices for your child’s well-being.
Understanding the Differences
Colds and allergies may seem alike, but they have very different causes. Colds are caused by viruses that infect the upper respiratory system, spreading through coughs, sneezes, and contaminated surfaces. On the other hand, allergies happen when the immune system overreacts to harmless substances like pollen, dust, or pet dander. Unlike colds, allergies aren’t contagious.
One key difference is how symptoms appear. If your child wakes up one day with a sore throat, stuffy nose, and mild fever, it’s likely a cold. Cold symptoms develop gradually and usually clear up within 7–10 days. Allergy symptoms, however, can start suddenly—especially when pollen counts rise, or your child is exposed to a known trigger. These symptoms, such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and a clear, runny nose, can last for weeks or months if the allergen remains in their environment.
A good way to tell the difference is by looking at mucus. A cold often starts with clear mucus that turns yellow or green as the body fights off the virus. Allergy-related mucus stays clear and watery. Another clue is itching—kids with allergies frequently rub their eyes, nose, or throat, while those with colds may feel tired or achy.
Coughing happens with both colds and allergies but for different reasons. A cold can cause a deep, mucus-filled cough, especially as congestion builds up. Allergies often lead to a dry cough caused by postnasal drip. Fever is another key indicator—if your child has a fever, it’s almost certainly a cold, as allergies don’t cause an elevated temperature.
How you treat your child’s symptoms depends on the cause. If they have a cold, focus on keeping them comfortable with plenty of rest, fluids, and soothing remedies like saline nasal drops or warm tea with honey (for children over one-year-old).
A humidifier can help ease congestion, and over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can provide relief if needed. Always check with your pediatrician before giving any medication. For allergies, the goal is to reduce exposure to triggers. Keep windows closed during peak pollen seasons, have your child

shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors, and use an air purifier to minimize allergens in your home. If symptoms persist, pediatricians may recommend antihistamines or other allergy medications. In some cases, allergy testing can help identify specific triggers and guide long-term treatment.
Most colds and allergies can be managed at home, but there are times when you should seek medical advice. See a pediatrician if:
• Your child’s cold symptoms last over two weeks or worsen over time.
• They have trouble breathing, wheezing, or a persistent cough.
• A high fever (above 102°F) accompanies their symptoms.
• Allergy symptoms interfere with daily activities and sleep or lead to frequent sinus infections.
