nniversaries and milestones come and go, and I’m often a day late in acknowledging them. But this one has been staring me in the face for months and I thought it might be worth sharing. I celebrate my 150th issue with Lifestyle Publications this month. Many of you may not realize that I also oversee the editorial for two of our sister publications, Johnson County Lifestyle and Leawood Lifestyle. I also provide support for our publications in other states, from Newport Beach, California to Cape Ann, Massachusetts. From North Scottsdale, Arizona to Boulder, Colorado. What started with one magazine in the fall of 2009 has grown to nearly two dozen publications across the country. And they’re all designed, printed and shipped from our little corner of the world.

Recent news reports have announced that several national publications with a long history are ceasing publication. A few of these publications have merged with others, while some have gone to a 100 percent web or digital format. What makes us different? And successful? We’re home grown. We try to focus on the best our community has to offer and we bring it right to your home every month.

I love having my fingers on the pulse of our community, and I love being able to share the good news of our friends and neighbors so please, keep the story ideas coming our way. But you know we couldn’t do any of it without the support of our devoted advertising partners, and so I offer special thanks to them for their continued support.

Around Town Heartland Honor Flight: Mission Successful
Chest pain? Just get here! Time equals heart muscle. That’s what Lee’s Summit Medical Center doctors want you to know about the importance of getting to an emergency room quickly for heart attack symptoms. The faster you are treated, the better your chances of survival and recovery from a heart attack.
Thanks to generous donations from Kansas City are residents; the Heartland chapter of Honor Flight recently charted an aircraft and took close to 100 well-deserving veterans on a day-long trip to Washington, DC. The veterans represented WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East. A few of the younger veterans stepped up to be guardians for members of the “Greatest Generation.” Three female veterans from WWII made the trip as well. The senior veteran was 97 years old at the time of the trip. Guardians are area volunteers who pay their own transportation costs and accompany wheelchair bound veterans for the day. One guardian for this trip was a veteran of the Middle Eastern conflict. He lost his leg, and still served as a guardian for a WWII vet. The veterans were given a hero’s welcome both in Washington D.C. and when they returned late that night to Kansas City.

The Lee’s Summit teacher team behind Kansas City’s Reel Spirit Awards for youth filmmakers
2014 Reel Spirit award-winning student filmmakers
The Movers and Shakers Behind the Reel Spirit Awards Article Kendra Mathewson | Photography Barbara Noble and Lisa Lala
T
his time of year in classrooms across town, educators are busy stirring young minds to do great things. One unique Kansas City celebration, Reel Spirit, honors a genre of one of those great things: filmmaking. Yes, kids here have the opportunity to create all sorts of films throughout the school year and submit them to the Reel Spirit competition, which then pulls out all the stops to create an amazing opportunity to see and encourage the young talent amongst us. The Reel Spirit Awards is the kid equivalent of the Academy Awards. Maybe not quite that large, or Hollywood-ized, but in just 10 years this significant event has become the premier regional recognition of student filmmakers’ work. All thanks to a group of Lee’s Summit teachers with a vision. (It does involve a red carpet, elegant attire and a golden statue for the winners.) In the same way the idea for a great film begins in the creative mind of one individual, so did the idea for Reel Spirit. Barbara Noble is a gifted program teacher at Longview Farm Elementary and Sunset Valley Elementary. Her idea for what became Reel Spirit was the result of several things working together. “Ten years ago Apple iMovie and the digital revolution started putting filmmaking in the hands of the average person,” explains

Noble. “My teacher friends and I saw what a great avenue for gifted kids it provided: problem solving, creative thinking, having to lead and follow, work as a team.” With that already in the works, she found more inspiration on a personal trip to New York with her husband in the spring of 2004. “I talked my way into an event at Tribeca Film Festival showcasing high school and college filmmakers,” she says. “I just knew we could do that here.” And, in the same way that a movie cannot be made by one person alone but entails a litany of collaborative talents, neither did Barbara Noble attempt creating a film fest for kids here alone. She shared the vision with teaching buddies, Becky Palmer and Toni Travalent, and said, ‘Let’s put on a show.” They had no money, no idea where they were going. “We were three teachers who had a vision.” It is because of the vision of these women that a door exists today for elementary school and middle school students to enter the filmmaking world, and they’ve expanded to include high school students the past two years. One after another doors have opened -- first at UMKC which allowed them to host their first workshops (their original source of funding) and event with 100 attendees, later Filmfest Kansas City adopted the group and the past three years the Alamo Drafthouse Mainstreet Theater has
provided the venue for Reel Spirit, now hosting 600 people from all over the metro, and entries from as far away as Hawaii and Malaysia. Retired teachers Wanda Hartter (Sunset Valley, Woodland) and Linda Thee (Trailridge and Greenwood) also joined the team. Reel Spirit is not just about making movies,” explains Noble. “It’s about empowering children through their imagination and the science of cinematic arts, and teaching kids that they have something Now a freshman at LSN, Gigi worth saying, too.” Harris has participated in Reel For all their work in their off Spirit since she was 9 years old time putting Reel Spirit together, and a student of Mason Elementary teacher Jenny Riedlinger the teachers enjoy seeing the kids’ who encouraged her. faces at the awards ceremony. “The pay off for us is the kids’ proud faces clutching their Oscar-like trophies and celebrating their unique creativity in filmmaking,” says Noble.
Since 2008, Reel Spirit is now the youth division of the non-profit 501c3 Kansas City FilmFest. Their 10th annual youth film festival takes place in April. ReelSpirit.KCFilmFest.org, Facebook.com/ReelSpiritFilmmakers
Reel Spirit’s ripple effects are far reaching. Many students have participated so far, including these award winners: A town in Belize was transformed as a result of the film of young filmmaker, Gigi Harris, a Mason Elementary 4th grader at the time, whose story of a poverty-stricken roadless community caught the attention of many who helped raise funds to finance road construction. View “San Mateo” on YouTube. Longview Farm Elementary student Thomas Gray and collaborator Caleb Cox produced a documentary about Thomas’s brother; the film is impacting perceptions of autism and being used to educate the public. View “Autism: Mason’s Story” on YouTube. Ben Hume’s filmmaking career began in 3rd grade at Longview Farm Elementary; his creative movies have him well on his way to a career in the industry.

The Wheels on the Bus Lee’s Summit Cares Honors a Man whose Retirement Drove his Life in a New Direction Article Lauren Collinsworth Claflin | Photography McKenna Mathewson

hen Rudy Rhodes retired from UPS after 28 years, he was ready to relax. At first. Then, however, he started to get bored. “You catch up on your rest for a little bit,” says Rhodes with a chuckle, “But you can only cut the grass and check the mail so many times before you start to wonder if you could do more.” Rhodes’ desire to do more led him to a part-time job as a school bus driver for the Lee’s Summit school district. He never imagined the journey that Bus #58 would ignite, both in his life and in the lives of so many children. “Well, everyone knows that #58 is the fun bus,” Rhodes says, laughing. “There’s a diverse mix of students that ride my bus, so we all come from different backgrounds, which is great. That allows the kids to share their cultures, appreciate our differences and develop so much respect for each other. We talk about making smart choices and how important it is to go to college. Plus we laugh a lot. We’re one big, happy family on #58!” Rhodes makes every child who rides his bus, from kindergarteners to high school students, feel special. Each student is greeted by name every day. On their birthdays, they get an exuberant birthday song performed over the intercom by ‘Mr. Rudy.’ He can
often get many of the students to sing along with him, but when he can’t, he performs solo. “After I finish their birthday song, I always get back on the intercom and say, ‘Great job Mr. Rudy!’ and the kids laugh,” says Rhodes. There may be a lot of laughter and singing on #58, but that is not the reason that Rhodes was honored by the community earlier this year. Lee’s Summit Cares is a non-profit organization that supports and coordinates efforts to decrease youth substance abuse and promote youth safety, health and well-being in the community. Every year, Lee’s Summit Cares awards 10 individuals who have had a profound impact on students’ lives. Rhodes was honored this year at the annual Mayor’s Character Breakfast for going the extra mile in his kindness and support of students. When Rhodes worked for UPS, his department sponsored an elementary school in the urban core. He worked personally with many students who were struggling, and he discovered the rewarding joy of seeing that glow in the eyes of a child who starts to believe in himself. He also saw, firsthand, the need to help our teachers. “Our teachers do an amazing job, but there is only so much oneon-one time they can give to each student without it affecting their continued >

whole class. When we can give an hour to help a child, it can make a difference,” says Rhodes. Because Rhodes knew how rewarding it had been to help students through the UPS program, he approached the principal of Prairie View Elementary School, about starting a mentoring program. In 2012, he started Book Buddies to provide one-on-one assistance to students who were struggling with reading. Rhodes recruited four other bus drivers from the school district to assist him, and their time and effort had an immediate impact on the children with whom they worked. Rhodes’ affable nature and great sense of humor bring out the best in children. He has a way of connecting with each child as a unique individual, which is the reason he has become so beloved in the classroom and behind the wheel of bus #58. He feels blessed to have the support of his wife, Ruth, with whom he recently celebrated their 50th anniversary, their four children and nine grandchildren in this new direction that his ‘retirement’ has taken him.

“I spent almost 30 years in the corporate world, and I never saw this coming,” Rhodes reflects. “I could have never imagined how rewarding it would be to drive a school bus! But feeling like I’m making a difference with all those children, in the classroom and even just talking to them about their lives and their futures on my bus, has meant so much to me. There are no bad days on the fun bus!”
Stop the Presses! Just as we were headed to print we learned that Mr. Rhodes was named 2014 School Bus Driver of the Year by the Missouri Association for Pupil Transportation and that he would be recognized by the association at the group’s annual state conference in Springfield.

Hartman Park Sports Complex Is a Hit Article Ryan Rosser | Photography McKenna Mathewson
Q
uietly tucked between peaceful neighborhoods and a dense copse of trees lies a 20-acre treasure in Lee’s Summit: Charles David Hartman Park Sports Complex. Renovated in 2008, the sports complex at 700 SW Old Pryor Rd. is named in honor of a Lee’s Summit hero. In 1983, heavy rains flash flooded the Little Blue River. A stranded individual, clinging to a tree after his canoe upturned, needed assistance getting to safety. Officer Charles David Hartman, a member of Lee’s Summit’s Underwater Rescue and Recovery team, responded, but tragically lost his life in the process. The park, originally designed to host youth sports, was dedicated to Officer Hartman in May 1990, seven years after he gave his life. Today the complex is home to three gorgeous softball fields, a concession stand, children’s play area, and connections with nature trails. Adult softball and kickball leagues compete seasonally at the sports complex. League schedules can be found at CityOfLS.net/ Parks/Facilities/Hartman-Park-Sports-Complex. 24
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2014
Grab your lawn chairs and pack your families for a fun and free evening cheering for one or more of Lee’s Summit’s softball or kickball teams. Team names vary from practical, Sorano’s Sports Bar, to creative, Inglorious Batters. Softball games begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sunday matches begin at 4 p.m. Competitive kickball games occur on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Summer season recreational co-ed softball playoffs conclude on August 5, but other summer leagues continue up to the 14th. The softball fall session runs August 3 through September 26. There’s plenty of time left in 2014 to enjoy a game or two or three. Bleacher seating leaves plenty of room for fans and family to cheer on their favorite players and teams. Tended lawn outlines the fences, providing ample space for lawn chairs or a game of catch. At dusk, flood lights illuminate the fields and parking lot, promising a safe environment for both players and spectators. The north side of Charles David Hartman Park Sports Complex includes a full-service concession stand with clean restrooms. Comfortable picnic tables rest beneath a covered pavilion near
the concessions for those who wish to enjoy their snacks in the shade. Alcoholic beverages are sold at the concession stand, so be prepared to show your ID if you wish to imbibe spirits while watching the games. During game play, children can take advantage of a generous playground designed just for them. Two separate play areas allow safe play, one for toddlers and another for preschoolers or older. Adjacent to the sports complex is the 10-acre Winterset Park Nature Area. Take a break between games and stroll along the wood-mulched trails. The wildlife, wildflowers, waterfalls and wood bridges won’t disappoint. Competitors enjoy manicured outfields and raked infields. The outfields are irrigated to the keep the grass green and soft. In contrast, crushed limestone covers the infields to increase traction and speed as players race from base-to-base. If participation is more your style, you’ll need to start planning for 2015. Softball and kickball team registration for the fall season concluded on July 29. Many teams will likely compete again next year, so seize this opportunity to scope out the competition. It costs up to $335 per team to join a single header softball league, and up to $645 per team to join a double header softball league. Team rosters must contain a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 players. Teams are required to provide their own league-sanctioned bats and balls for game play. If school yard kickball thrills you, there’s a league for that, too. League fees cost up to $250 per team. Kickball rosters must carry a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 players. For the fall session the fee includes no fewer than seven games. In memory of Officer Hartman’s sacrifice, life and joy occur nightly at his namesake’s sports complex. Whether you’re a player or a spectator, you’ll find excitement at Charles David Hartman Park Sports Complex.

Planting Trees and Forging Bonds with The Giving Grove Article Lisa Allen | Photography Provided
I
thought of countless ways to start this article. The old ‘teach a man to fish’ saying seemed plausible if I swapped ‘plant a tree’ for fishing. So did the tired ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ adage. Problem is, those words are trite. They don’t do justice to the work that’s happening every day, right here in our own communities, to provide fresh fruit to those who are hungry and worried about their next meal and at the same time empowering them to change their circumstances by investing their time in a little orchard. Though The Giving Grove, an affiliate of the Kansas City Community Garden, is a non-profit organization that focuses on self-help and educational assistance to low-income residents to grow their own food—specifically apples, nuts and berries--this article isn’t just about apples. It’s about what the apples mean not only to the people who can pluck them from the branch and eat them, but for those who help clear the trash, prime the soil, dig the holes and nurture the plants from seedling to tree. This is about the primal connection that food creates for families and about how, when communities come together in the pursuit of a common goal, the landscape can change in more ways than one. Executive Director Robert Reiman has an arsenal of statistics at his disposal. One in five children in the state of Kansas lives in a food insecure home. The numbers are higher in Missouri: the state has the fifth highest rate of child food insecurity. For the quarter of a million people affected in the Kansas City metro area, food insecurity means a marked decline in economic opportunity, productivity and academic achievement and studies have shown that proper nutrition in the first three years of life makes a profound impact in the lives of children and their families. 26
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2014
Reiman had retired after a 27-year career as a principal at Deloitte Consulting and was focused on an environmental ministry at his church when he was approached by former Kansas State Representative Jill Quigley, who connected him to Kevin Birzer, Greg Finkle and Ray Makalous of the Church of the Resurrection. Reiman has grown fruit in his own backyard for more than 10 years, and the men shared a desire to create a sustainable, organic option to help the food insecure population of Kansas City. “We know there are backpack programs and other initiatives to help,” says Reiman. “But we saw a need for non-processed foods and wanted to fill that gap with an option that would be available even if backpacks were no longer being sent home with students. We started with a ‘kick the tires’ workshop because we needed to test the idea before we got too far into the process. The strong support we found inspired me to better understand food insecurity, and I got really jazzed about the idea of not just providing food, but of coaching people in neighborhoods that
are most affected how to grow their own food, and in teaching kids where their food is coming from.” The Giving Grove’s model is an inclusive one. Though it grew from connections of faith, the organization is ecumenical and strives to complement, rather than compete with, other organizations. The difference is that The Giving Grove focuses on little orchards both for fresh produce and to strengthen the bonds between residents in each community. “It seems simple enough, to plant a tree,” says Reiman, “but it can be dicey. Not all trees are created equal, and there are issues like disease resistance and ease of maintenance to consider. Education is an important component in the success of each little orchard.” The organization requires that at least two people commit to each project. These people must be from different families, and must learn to care for the newly planted trees not only by scouting regularly for disease but also by maintaining the area in which the trees are planted.
“I have so many stories,” says Reiman, as he talks about how various Kansas City communities have embraced The Giving Grove’s mission. There was one steward at the Wyandotte Countians Against Crime neighborhood who told Reiman ‘I can’t grow dirt, but I think we can do better’ as they discussed the crime rate and how the area looked more like a dumping ground than a place in which to raise a family. “There was another time we were out around Tenth and Newton,” says Reiman. “The neighborhood didn’t know that we’d be there planting, as it was a faith-based food pantry that procured the rights to a piece of property and started the project. We show up and start planting, and about an hour into it I look across the street and see a door open just a crack, with a woman watching us. So I walked over and I introduced myself. She asked what we were doing, and I said ‘We’re planting this for you. This is your orchard.’
It seems simple enough, to plant a tree, but it can be dicey. Not all trees are created equal, and there are issues like disease resistance and ease of maintenance to consider. Education is an important component in the success of each little orchard.

“Thing is, when it’s their orchard it’s more than just food. It’s also a chance for them to work together to make their neighborhood stronger,” says Reiman. The Giving Grove is three planting seasons old. The original goal was to have planted five little orchards in 2013. They did 21. By the end of this spring’s planting season, they had 38 edible tree gardens sprinkled across the Kansas City metro area. “We can plant twice a year,” he says, “in April and fall. Spring planting needs to be done by about May 10, but we get a little bit more time in the fall, sometimes through November, depending on the weather.” The organization is committed to digging holes and planting by hand whenever possible, so as to minimize the negative effects
of heavy machinery on the land. Extra hands are always welcome, says Reiman, especially when The Giving Grove is serving a more senior neighborhood. “We’re trying to make as great an impact as rapidly as possible” says Reiman. The focus in the off-season is to queue up the next season’s projects, continue to improve operations and to educate stewards about maintaining a healthy orchard and the importance of patience. “Trees need three to five years in the ground to produce fruit,” he says. “For berry bushes, however, we see fruit in year two. As we move forward, we’ll be thinking through the stewards’ role in distributing the food, how to preserve the fruit post-season and how we can continue to create community through the little orchards.” To learn more about or volunteer with The Giving Grove, visit GivingGrove.org.

Helping Cups Runneth Over The Kauffman Foundation’s 1 Million Cups program helps business startups percolate success. Article Katherine Bontrager | Photography Provided
W
hen Stuart Ludlow and his business partner, David Hulsen, began their own software company, the duo had plenty of hurdles to clear. But getting constructive feedback about their startup? That may have been one of the easiest problems the two encountered, thanks to 1 Million Cups, a program created by Kauffman Labs for Enterprise Creation, a subsidiary of the Kauffman Foundation. Sporting the tagline “Caffeinate Your Community,” the program (with its clever coffee-cup logo), promises to build communities, “one cup at a time.” And it does so in the simplest and most effective way possible: by offering local entrepreneurs the opportunity to present their startups to a diverse audience of mentors, advisors, and entrepreneurs. “1 Million Cups began in April, 2012,” explains Nathan Kurtz, a manager in Entrepreneurship for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. “It was started as a way for Kauffman associates to meet entrepreneurs in the community and find out what we can do to help them with their businesses. It was a grassroots effort to engage Kansas City-area entrepreneurs.” Yet the local creation has spread to a much broader audience, with 1 Million Cups becoming a nationwide phenomenon. “We’ve had more than 220 presenters in Kansas City, and over 2,200 across the country since the program launched,” Kurtz says. “We also have more than 250 Kansas City-area attendees from the community each week and over 2,000 audience members at 1 Million Cups locations each week across the U.S. We never expected it would get to this level of growth. It was, essentially, an accident that fit the need in dozens of communities across the U.S. of engaging entrepreneurs in their community.” Entrepreneurs like Ludlow and Hulsen, for example. The two have a company called RFP365, which offers a software platform that helps issue and respond to RFPs (Request for Proposal) more effectively and collaboratively. “We spoke at 1 Million Cups in October of 2012, right before we were about to launch with our alpha version,” Ludlow recalls. “It was the first time we’d publicly spoken about the platform. Our main goal was to solicit feedback and to find users willing to test out the software. We received tons of feedback. Because it’s an open forum where people can ask you questions and talk about ideas, we had people bring up issues we hadn’t thought of. And through that, we were able to get a couple of early testers, who provided important feedback that went into the next version of the software. Not only was 1 Million Cups a sounding board, it provided a lot of valuable resources back to us.” 30
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2014
With the program’s help, RFP365 has successfully moved from startup to functioning business. And as Ludlow says, “Things are going really well right now. We’re adding customers and staying incredibly busy.” The program takes place every Wednesday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. in locales around the country. Yet the premise remains the same: Two presenters prepare a 6-minute presentation and then engage in 20 minutes of feedback and questions. Through this candid back-and-forth scenario, entrepreneurs gain insight into how they can improve their business plans, gather helpful feedback, and also connect with important contacts within the business community. But it’s not just presenters who benefit.
“The program is educational in nature,” Kurtz says. “It’s educational for the presenters as they go through our Kauffman Founders School video series on Powerful Presentations. It’s educational for the audience as they listen to and interact with the presenters. It’s also educational for the presenters since the volunteer organizers, also entrepreneurs, are helping to build their entrepreneurial ecosystem, give specific grading feedback to the presenters on aspects of their presentation.” The criteria to present are fairly simple, Kurtz says. “We have guidelines that the business be 3 years old or less, at least have a website and a specific customer/problem/solution set, and have a scalable growth model. It isn’t just tech companies, though: 1 Million Cups is industry-agnostic. Entrepreneurs of all types attend and present.” The forum is free and open to the public and occurs weekly at the Kauffman Foundation. “We invite any entrepreneurs, innovators and civic-minded individuals who want to hear the presentations to attend,” Kurtz says. “We do ask that the presenters watch the Founders School videos and answer the subsequent questions, because it is educational, and we know that better presentations yield better content, better engagement with the audience and better on-going support.” The average presenter is in the early part of building his or her business and is struggling to find more customers and build a team around the company. While every story is unique, Kurtz says, the presentations always end with the same question, “What can we, as a community, do to help you?” The community truly ministers to the entrepreneurs. “We have a lot of organic traffic of people who’ve heard about 1 Million Cups or attended 1 Million Cups, and then go online to apply to present,” Kurtz adds. “We’re also beginning the see the national network come together. Once a presenter has presented in, say, St. Louis or Denver or Des Moines or Tulsa, they then have the opportunity to go to other cities in the 1 Million Cups network and present there as well. It’s a powerful tool for the entrepreneurs to continue to learn and for the audience to see local and regional companies.” Each local chapter—in cities including Denver, Chicago, Chapel Hill, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and more—is community led, funded and operated. The individual chapters find local sponsors to provide meeting space, coffee and video recording services. What began as a way to help Kansas City entrepreneurs has since blossomed into a nationwide network of businesspeople helping business-minded people. The ingenious program truly is working to ‘caffeinate’ the local business community and is creating some serious national buzz, helping new businesses grow and succeed. That’s something surely everyone can lift their mugs to and toast with appreciation. For more information, visit 1MillionCups.com.

Home Matters
Five Home Improvements to Consider Now… if you are considering a move within the next 5 years
Y
ou have decided that it might be time to move but you know you can’t make plans until you sell the home you are in first. Time has flown by since you moved in and you know there are plenty of unfinished projects and outdated appliances. And let’s face it, the carpet has seen better days. It can be overwhelming just knowing where to begin. You dread having to make decisions about what will help you gain a quick sale and which improvements will get you the most value versus the cost. Keep in mind that while the focal points will be in the kitchen, master bath and master bedroom, consider the things that people are looking for the most when purchasing a home: Convenience and comfort.
Improvement #2 Mechanical
Improvement #1 Flooring
Improvement #3 Paint/Wallpaper
If your carpet is questionable, you may want to consider replacement. Look for the most reasonably priced neutral carpet. A buyer wants a home that is move-in ready. Sure you can consider the allowance, but remember—you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.
Although wallpaper may be making a gradual comeback, buyers are not interested in your personal selections. Removal of wallpaper is recommended. Fresh paint is still the most economical way to update your home. Consider neutralizing the rooms with bright or bold
38
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2014
Buyers may be comparing your home to newly constructed homes as well. Generally speaking, the buyer will be asking for a higher allowance than it would cost you to have new carpet installed. Another item on most buyer’s wish lists is ceramic tile in master bath and the kitchen.
(Appliances, HVAC, Plumbing)
Consider replacing appliances that are more than seven years old. Black and stainless are the most sought-after finishes. When thinking about your HVAC, think in terms of what the home inspector will report. Leaky faucets are a must for repair or replacement.
colors. A few popular neutral wall paint colors include Sherwin Williams Believable Buff, Latte, Bona Fide Beige, Realist Beige and Sea Salt, as well as Benjamin Moore’s Coventry Gray, Wicker, Shale and Abalone. Don’t forget to give the trim a fresh coat of paint as well. Improvement #4 Roof
It is possible that replacing loose shingles may be all your roof needs, however if you need roof replacement, chances are you are better off replacing it with the most reasonably priced selection rather than opening yourself up to a substantial reduction in your buyer’s offer. And while you have workings on the roof, align and inspect the gutters. Improvement #5 Lighting
Light fixtures can give your home an outdated look. Look for oiled rubbed bronze and chrome to replace the outdated gold fixtures. If you have track lighting with globe bulbs in the master bathroom, this would be a priority to replace as well. ‘Bout Thyme Deli Downtown Deli Serves up Diversity with Delight Article Elizabeth Rosenberger | Photography McKenna Mathewson and Russell Walker
T
ucked between the fire station and the railroad tracks, ‘Bout Thyme Deli creates made-to-order fresh food every day. Previously known as Dave’s Deli and located in the Lakewood area for several years, owner Dave Kemp moved his establishment downtown Lee’s Summit six months ago. The location is perfect and offers a small outside eating area if you’re not in a hurry and want to savor the hustle and bustle of downtown. Inside, there is plenty of room for a busy breakfast, lunch or dinner crowd with several high-top tables that offer ample seating. Free Wi-Fi and two flat screen TVs are provided for those who like to keep up on the news or watch a sporting event while they unwind. I was able to visit the deli with my family, which can be challenging sometimes due to our diverse preference in food. No problem here. The menu offers plenty of choices ranging from gluten free to veggie loaded or good ole’ carb loving taste buds. Since it was lunchtime, I ordered the chicken club wrap ($6.29) that was loaded with fresh grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and mayo. I could only eat half due to its size but had the benefit of having leftovers for the next day. My husband had the KC Philly steak sandwich ($6.79) loaded with tasty, tender and mouthwatering meat nestled in a soft hoagie bun. He rounded out his meal with a side order of the lexi spud, a baked potato so large he couldn’t eat it all. My son chose the veggie panini ($6.99), a well balanced mix of hummus, spinach-artichoke blend, lettuce, black olives, banana peppers and onions on grilled bread. A side order of five-bean salad with a gentle sweet flavor complimented his sandwich. The meatballer ($6.29) is what my grandson settled on and it came with several large meatballs topped with melted provolone and mozzarella cheese on Italian bread. ‘Bout Thyme Deli offers a breakfast menu which includes everything from breakfast pizza to croissants and Kemp’s signature 40

firehouse biscuits and gravy; biscuits covered with scrambled eggs, hash browns and sausage gravy ($6.99). Lunch specials are offered along with a kid’s menu making this a very family-friendly place. For the salad lover, the menu has a variety to choose from. Their collision salad is a mix of cucumbers, grapes, raspberries, almond slices, tomatoes, banana peppers and feta cheese on a bed of mixed greens served with creamy raspberry vinaigrette dressing ($6.59). For the heartier salad eater the cowboy salad would be the way to go with roast beef, cheddar cheese, Fritos, onions, tomatoes and banana peppers on a bed of mixed greens and served with a tangy dressing ($6.29). Several pasta dishes with marinara or alfredo; meatless or with meatballs round out the menu. The service is fast and Kemp, who can be seen not only behind the counter serving up menu items but ambling through the dining area chatting with patrons, makes you feel more like a neighbor dropping by to just say hello. The deli has its own hot dog cart; a mobile cart complete with colorful umbrella that can be used for corporate events, reunions, birthday parties, tailgating or block parties. The pizza dog, Chicago dog and krauter dog are a few favorites that can be served from the cart. Open on Mondays 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays, ‘Bout Thyme Deli is making its mark in downtown Lee’s Summit. Their catering menu includes sandwich trays, boxed lunches, pan salads and pastas along with cookie trays. The website is loaded with information and mouthwatering pictures of several dishes that are served. With great food, fast ser‘Bout Thyme Deli vice and the friendly atmosphere, 210 S.E. She’ll Have You at ‘ELLO Inspiring others to live life, laugh often and walk in wellness Article Elizabeth Rosenberger | Photography McKenna Mathewson

arli DiMarco says she’s just an average girl who can walk on her hands and whose favorite food is peanut butter. She strives to enjoy life, laugh often and inspire others to do the same. She also has an extraordinary passion for health and wellness that is shared daily by passionately serving up the finest in juice and smoothie concoctions. DiMarco’s newly opened juice and smoothie bar aptly named ELLO is located on Southwest 3rd Street in downtown Lee’s Summit. DiMarco hopes her zeal for life will spread. Why ELLO? It’s just a happy saying she shared with her brother Chuck when they would see each other that flourished into the name of her business. “As I began the thought process of opening my place I just thought it would be fun to say “ELLO” every time a customer walked in,” says DiMarco. “I told Chuck if my dream business ever actually happened that I was going to call it ELLO, just for that reason.” A graduate of Lee’s Summit High School, DiMarco earned a degree in exercise science and nutrition from the University of Central Missouri in 2013. When the business started coming together and her dream blossomed into concrete plans, DiMarco wanted her place to be known for more than just a ‘smoothie bar.’
44
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2014
“I wanted my customers not only to be healthy but I wanted to overwhelm them with happiness too; because life is too short to be anything but happy.” ELLO offers juice blends that are rich in vitamins and minerals to provide the body with what it needs to thrive. However, what makes ELLO’s juice option most unique is the walk-up, buffet-style juice bar that allows all customers to choose their own selection of produce. With her mega juicing machine, you can watch her make your fresh fruit and veggie drink while you wait. When DiMarco visited the West Coast, juice bars were everywhere. With consumers becoming more health conscious, many are trying to get on the healthy living band wagon. Juicing has evolved as one of those ways to create a healthier lifestyle. But what if you don’t have the time it takes to get your juice on? DiMarco believes that’s why Lee’s Summit needs her type of shop. Since her grand opening in May, ELLO has experienced a customer base beyond DiMarco’s expectations. “Downtown Lee’s Summit is a very supportive place to be and I wouldn’t change my location if I had a chance,” she says. “The amount of support this community shows is unbelievable and I couldn’t ask for more genuine people to
be walking in and out of my shop every day. Downtown Lee’s Summit isn’t just a district of business, it’s a big family down here and I love everyone that I’m surrounded with on a daily basis.” Besides juice and smoothie drinks, ELLO also offers protein shakes and healthy eats. You can grab and go or enjoy your choice of drink in her friendly and intimate sitting area. “I’m inspired by happiness,” DiMarco says. “If I do something that makes someone else smile it warms my heart. There’s no better feeling in the world than being happy and to know that I have the power to make others smile and fill them with happiness gives me instant gratification that inspires me to do it more.” ELLO Juice Bar 13 SW 3rd Street ElloJuiceAndSmoothie.com

BMW’s Spirited M235i Puts a Smile on Your Face Article and Photography Tom Strongman
B
MW’s M235i is the spiritual cousin to the 1600/2002 from the late 1960s and early 1970s. I bought a white 1600 in 1969 because I couldn’t afford the more powerful 2002 and I loved it. It was small on the outside yet roomy inside, had incredible visibility thanks to the tall windows and it handled like a sports car. The strategy behind the 2 Series is similar to that used for the 1600/2002: Make a compact coupe with sporty handling and, in the case of the M235i, blistering performance and incredible fuel economy for such a powerful car. The M235i has 320 twin-turbo horsepower from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder and either an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The car from BMW’s press fleet had the eightspeed automatic with manual shift paddles, and it was delightful. Hard-core enthusiasts may choose the manual but 46
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2014
frankly, the automatic is so good, and can be shifted manually when desired, that it would be my choice. Base price for the M235i is $44,025. The 240-horsepower 228i has a four-cylinder engine and its base price is $33,025. My 1600 had several recurring issues that eventually caused me to sell it after a couple of years but I still remember how much fun it was to drive. Those memories came flooding back when I took an M235i on a weekend trip because it was a blast. I missed a few things on my trip, namely a navigation system, satellite radio and heated seats. Those items would bump the price by $4,450, pushing the sticker price to more than $48,000. The M235i is fun every time you slip into the deeply
contoured sport seat that fits as if it were made for you. The chassis is tuned to deliver a taut, well-controlled ride and it loves to be tossed into a turn. Still, the ride is compliant enough to be pleasant for everyday driving. The adaptable suspension, M Sport brakes and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires are perfectly matched. continued >

(continued)
Being able to select Sport Plus, Sport, Comfort or Eco Pro drive settings with a button on the console lets the driver tailor the car to suit his or her mood. Sport mode is the most fun, of course, because each gear is held a little longer, each shift of the eightspeed automatic is a little firmer and the exhaust sounds throatier. Comfort is a good everyday setting, and Eco Pro is perfect for long stretches of highway travel. Eco Pro softens the throttle response, lets the car coast with the engine at idle when the throttle is released and cycles the air conditioning on and off to reduce the drag on the engine. The driver can select which of those functions is active. I selected the coasting feature and disabled the others. Rolling to St. Louis with Interstate 70 traffic that was moving well past the speed limit, I averaged 29.1 miles per gallon. The return trip was interrupted with several rainstorms, but my average was 28.6 for nearly 500 miles of fast driving. The M235i’s cabin is businesslike. The instrument panel has easyto-read analog gauges. The sport seats have a wide range of adjustability that makes them a great place to be for hours at a time. Whereas the 1600/2002 had a surprisingly spacious back seat, due mainly to a tall, upright roof, the one in the M235i coupe would be cramped for most adults. The trunk has decent space, and folddown rear seats give some flexibility for carrying large objects. Price The test car’s base price was $44,025. Options included keyless entry and leather seats.
At a glance Point: The M235i is a ball of fun rolled into a fairly sedate twodoor coupe. The 320-horsepower engine is a delight, sports seats fit like a glove and fuel economy is amazing given the power output of the engine. Counterpoint: The boy-racer front fascia is a bit overstated, the back seat is small and the price is substantial.

Artist’s Palette
Flamenco Dancer
Autorretrato The Wanderer
introducing the art of
Ryan Delgado
What brought you to Kansas City? I was born and raised in Kansas City, Mo., near the Raytown area. I currently live in Greenwood, and have set up my studio space at home. Describe your art. I think we’re seeing a shift in the dominant style of art happening in our lifetime now, from the pure abstract or non-objective “modern art” of the 20th century to a revival of traditional, representational realism that we haven’t seen since the 19th century. It is an encouraging shift, and I know I am not the only one who is optimistic
about it. This is the style of painting I strive towards, and one that I’ve always been drawn to. I don’t see it as necessarily being a new movement, but a continuation of a tradition of art that should have never disappeared to begin with. My work is mainly portrait and figurative painting in oils, as well as landscape or still life. With all the stimuli and craziness that constantly bombards us daily--cell phones, internet, TV, jobs, school, or anything else in our fast-paced lives--I think art is one thing that teaches us to slow down and to be still for a moment. What inspires you? I have a few answers to this question. First, God inspires me more than anything else. One of my favorite passages of Scripture is Isaiah 64:8 – Yet, O Lord, You are our Father. We are the clay, And You are the potter. We are all the work of your hand. God has many names and descriptions in Scripture, and I love that one of those is God as an artist. He shapes and creates things with His hands, and we just happen to be one of the things that God creates. I can’t make things the way God makes them, but if I could sum up my mission and purpose as an artist, it is to create imitations of God’s creation. It is my way of honoring Him and acknowledging how impressive His creative hand is. Second, I’m inspired by other artists. Both past and present, artists who do or have done great work give me something to chase

after. That’s the beautiful thing about being an artist – You are never at your best. I would hate to reach a point where I knew I could not become any better. The way I see it, it is the improvement and progression as an artist that makes it exciting Lastly, art history inspires me. I remember being in my high school Spanish class, and being blessed to have a teacher who was so passionate about the subject that it wasn’t just a class about learning a language. She taught us about the culture and history of Spain. And of course, art is a huge part of Spanish history. It was there that I first learned about the 17th century Spanish master Diego Velázquez. He’s been my favorite artist ever since. His work and story have inspired me tremendously. Where did you study art? I received my Bachelor of Arts in studio painting from Truman State University in 2004. Since then, I’ve been self-taught through independent study of Old Master work and history, as well as contemporary instructional books and video on classical drawing and painting technique and practice. When is your next showing or exhibit? Lately, it seems my work is constantly moving from one exhibition to another. I recently had my biggest solo exhibition at the Gamber Center and I do lots of juried shows in the Kansas City area. Summer shows included the Celebrate Summit Art show at Got Art Gallery in Lee’s Summit, the Summit Art Summer show at University of Central Missouri (July 12 – August 8), and I’m planning to enter the Raytown Artists Association show (August 21-23). For other announcements on current and upcoming shows, I invite you to visit my blog site RyanDelgadoArt.blogspot.com or my Facebook page (Ryan Delgado Art). You will also see new paintings posted regularly as I finish them.

Who’s Blogging?
meet your blogging neighbor,
Kim Rues
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. KR: I am a Type A girl learning that Type A- is just fine, and probably a whole lot more fun. As a single mother who struggles to effectively juggle career, family and the occasional date, I am committed to finding a way to breathe – to cushion my world with a little more space, a little more time, a lot less stress. A little red wine and a fresh pink pedicure can only help the situation.
Q: How many readers does your blog have? KR: In a typical month, approximately 750 people stop by to peruse my posts.
Q: When did you start blogging? KR: I tinkered around with my first blog in October 2010, but really decided to jump in with both feet in January, 2011.
Q: What’s your favorite Lee’s Summit restaurant/family attraction? KR: The boys and I love to frequent locally owned establishments. Our favorites lately have been Westside Bar and Grill in Raintree Lake – a great place to grab a burger and watch a basketball game and KD’s Books – the best little bookstore in downtown Lee’s Summit.
Q: Why did you start blogging? KR: I started blogging for the very same reason we all do: to get rich! (Clearly, that has not quite happened yet.) Turns out, I love the clarity that writing brings to my life. Q: Who is the target audience for your blog? KR: Parents – single or otherwise – who are just trying to raise their children the best that they can, with love and authenticity. Q: How often do you blog? KR: My goal is three posts per week. Lately, I have been falling slightly short of that goal – life gets in the way. And I let it.
Q: What’s been the most popular/viewed post on your blog to date? KR: The most popular post to date is the one I wrote on the day my son started his junior year of high school: Go Confidently.
Q: Tell us what inspired the unique name of your blog? KR: People always inquire about the origins of the name Rubber Chicken Madness. There really is a rubber chicken – his name is Cuddly, and he transformed my life. The story, complete with video, can be found on The Rubber Chicken page of the blog. Q: What is the direct link for the main page of your blog? KR: RubberChickenMadness.com Do you know a local blogger we should introduce to our readers?
Q: Where do you get the inspiration for your posts? KR: Primarily, my children: Eric (17) and Jason (14) provide me with ample opportunities to explore my parenting philosophy, to dig deep in my heart for wisdom, and to strive to live an authentic life. 54

any of the pets who enter the bi-state campuses of the Great Plains SPCA in Merriam and Independence are able to find homes within their first 30 days in the shelter. Most of the cute and cuddly puppies tend to find homes within 24 hours of becoming available for adoption. However, there are some truly wonderful dogs that have been in their care for months and are just as ready to love on human companions. Take Pint and Santiago for instance. Pint is a 5 year old Chihuahua that has survived cancer, almost two years of shelter life and the sudden death of his adopter. Ideally, he may be seeking a specific home with one person with whom he can tightly bond, but he sure has a lot of love to give that lucky person! Santiago, a 2 year old Pittie Mix is like a big puppy who likes to play rough with other dogs, but cuddles just as hard as he plays. Some may look at these long term residents and think they are not worth considering for adoption but in fact they are just waiting for the right people to find them. Maybe that’s you! Just as humans are unique, so too are these great shelter dogs and every one of them deserves a second chance.

Parting Thoughts
Children Can Teach the Grown-ups a Bit About Imagination Words Todd B. Natenberg
W
hen we removed the safety gates that surrounded the area rug in our den, I thought I had opened the play area for our three and-a-half year old twin sons. Instead, they saw it as a stage on which to perform. When we brought the triangular colored blocks out to play, I thought I had created a puzzle game. They saw cupcakes for a chef to serve. When my boys recently received free promotional items at a T-bones game, I thought I had given them colored fly swatters. They saw shovels to play in the sand. The power of imagination. The power of childhood. When I was a full-time newspaper reporter, we used to joke there are three sides to all stories: your side, my side, and the truth. The more politically correct answer today says the truth is somewhere in between. But for my sons, there is no in between. When it comes to pretending, boundaries are only those which they -- or we -- set. What’s important though is that we use extreme caution when setting those boundaries. Of course, as parents, we want our children to always speak the truth. I once asked a friend, “Do you really believe the crazy things you say?” “Of course, not,” he said. “Denial is a great place to live. You should come hang out.” 66

But that’s just it: for children, it’s not about denial. It’s about being happy – and dreaming! My parents often told me, “That’s not realistic. That’s not reality. You need to live in the real world.” But imagination, when executed properly, is fantasizing about dreams coming true. Who didn’t want to (or still does for that matter) want to be Batman? My boys are convinced their rings make them Green Lantern, their capes make them Superman “here to save the day” and any dinner plate is Captain America’s shield. I know as a father I pride myself on teaching my sons to be fantastic, contributing, happy individuals who already are and will continue to make an incredible difference in the world. To do that, I need to impose limits, to balance discipline with freedom. But at what price? Robert Kennedy once said, “There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?” Precisely because of their ability to pretend, to imagine, and to live in “denial,” Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and more recently Steve Jobs and Bill Gates contributed amazing legacies. In our family, so long as they aren’t hurting themselves, others or property, the last thing we want to do is stop our boys’ creativity. Their imagination is the key to their happiness -- and ours.
