How Do You Show Your Love?

I

recently realized that I tend to show my love with offerings of food. Now, before you laugh, no, my husband and children are not rolling down the aisles thanks to daily feasts prepared by this loving gal. It’s just that I do love to entertain. Any excuse to put out a spread of appetizers and desserts, I’m all over it. When someone in my circle is sick or has just had a baby, I’m happy to jump on the Meal Train site and sign up to bring a meal. A trip to the office for It was a true joy to spotlight so many local, independent restaurants in this food-themed isa meeting is always better if I walk in sue. My brother, pictured here, was a respected with a treat to share with the team. And chef and restaurant owner in coastal Maine for when Christmas approaches, I know I’ll more than 20 years. We lost him suddenly in October. Clearly, my passion for sharing food is bring a smile to my dad’s face when I a family trait, one that makes me proud. give him a tin of the candied pecans he’s loved for years. But this realization made me wonder how others show their love. My husband shows love by solving problems. Whether they are technology related (his specialty) or simple nuisances like burned out light bulbs, he’s quick to do what it takes to solve the little problems that irritate us regularly. He’s never met a remote control or gizmo that befuddles him while I’ve been brought to tears of frustration when I can’t figure out how to watch what is saved on the DVR. When I call him because I’m once again a little bit lost on a trip downtown or to an unfamiliar corner of the county, he’s quick to stop what he’s doing and map quest me out of my predicament. My dad, he’s a household helper. He came to KC from Chicago to help build a swing set for his grandsons one (very, very hot, humid summer) weekend. Every time he visits, he wants to help me with something around the house. He’ll take my car to get the oil changed. He’ll thin out the daylilies and hosta plants in the garden and edge the patio while he’s at it. As a child, I have memories of trips to my grandma’s where he was always equally as helpful. Others are advice givers and I suppose I know several others who show their love by being quiet listeners and passionate prayer warriors. So it got me thinking, as we approach the international holiday of love, what do you do to show your love to those around you? I encourage you to give this some thought and ask others in your family what they think about the idea. And once you’ve put your finger on it, show your love to someone who needs it this month.

Prom Boutique Woods Chapel United Methodist Church is already gearing up for its 2015 Prom Boutique with their 11th year of helping local prom dreams come true. The event will take place March 17-21. They typically have more than 3,000 new or almost-new prom dresses from size 0 to size 28, available to any area teen girl. The dresses are sorted by size, and the girls are 14

able to try them on in private dressing areas and choose the perfect dress. A team of skilled seamstresses is on hand to provide minor alterations if needed. Each dress is then steamed and bagged before going home with its new owner. During the year, new or nearly-new prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, prom jewelry, evening bags, makeup samples, undergarments and dressy shoes are collected from church members, individuals and organizations. Dresses size 16 and up are particularly needed. These donations enable these young girls in need of assistance to enjoy an evening of memories.

Signature Massage and Infant Massage of Kansas City are now open in Lee’s Summit at 3450 Ralph Powell Rd, Suite A. They offer many familiar, core services such as Swedish, deep tissue and hot stone massage. Ellen Hamilton, LMT, takes time to develop personal massage protocols for each of her clients, including some that may have specific health concerns such as TMJ disorder or sciatic pain. Hamilton also works with pregnant women to help alleviate pain and soreness that so often come with pregnancy. In addition, new parents or parents-to-be can sign up for an infant massage course taught by Christina Kartsonis-Woltkamp, certified educator of infant massage. Classes are held at Signature Massage or can be scheduled in one’s home. This four-week course teaches parents how to massage their newborn to one-year-old child, using techniques based on century-old practices from the Indian culture, Swedish massage and principles of yoga and reflexology. For more information, visit SignatureMassageKcMo.com.

Nominate Community Heroes for Truly 150 Commemorative Medallions As part of Lee’s Summit’s Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2015, the Truly 150 Steering Committee will honor 150 individuals for their distinguished contribution to the progress, culture, and general welfare of the Lee’s Summit community. Each honoree will receive a commemorative medallion. We need your help in identifying our

“Community Heroes.” If you know of anyone you believe deserves such recognition, please fill out the nomination form at Truly150.com. Fill in as much contact information as you can for the nominee, and explain why you believe your nominee is worthy of this recognition. You may submit as many nominations as you like, and self-nominations are welcomed. Awards are limited to living honorees but the honoree need not currently live in Lee’s Summit. It is important to keep in mind that our community has far more than 150 people who have provided substantial contributions to the community and who are deserving of our gratitude. However, we are limiting this particular recognition to 150. Please do not be offended if your nominee is not selected for a medallion. It is not an indication that the nominee’s role in the community is not appreciated. All nominations will remain confidential. Nominations must be submitted no later than February 27, 2015.

Amethyst Place Needs Donations Amethyst Place provides safe and supportive transitional housing for women in recovery and their children. Families share responsibility and accountability for children, the apartment building, a safe environment and maintenance of their recovery. Amethyst Place is always in need of furniture and other household items. Their top needs right now are: Pots & pans, bagless, working vacuums, microwaves, mattress pads (twin & full), laptops--someone wipes them clean and sets them up for moms who complete GEDs and enroll in college while living at Amethyst Place. They are also in need of volunteers to provide childcare during events for the moms. If you have donations, please contact Shanda Moon at shanda@amethystplace.org or call 816.231.8782.

Two years of grassroots marketing and three awards later, the Kansas City Automotive Museum received its first major donation from a private donor, making the long-awaited museum possible. Introducing Dr. Lauren Bessey and Dr. Jason Bessey with Family Health Specialists of Lee’s Summit This husband and wife team of doctors with Family Health Specialists of Lee’s Summit is pleased to return to the Greater Kansas City area. Drs. Lauren and Jason Bessey share a common goal of providing personalized, quality care to the residents of the community they now call home.

I would recommend gathering some trusted opinions and reading the physician’s bio to see if the physician’s personal beliefs and style coincide with yours. Most bios can typically be found on a clinic’s website.

Q: What makes a good primary care physician? A: There are many skills that make a primary care physician Jason Bessey, DO good at what we do. First, in my opinion, is a passion for medicine and helping others. Having a passion for medicine means staying up to date on current treatments and medications to keep patients as healthy and informed as possible. This helps to prevent errors and helps us give the best medical care possible.

You can only gather so much information from the web or opinions of others, and in the end you sometimes need to give a physician the chance to impress you with a face-to-face meeting.

The desire to help others is absolutely critical to being a doctor. This starts with listening to the patient and understanding what their needs are, and how conditions effect their patients.

Q: What is the difference between family medicine and internal medicine? A: Family medicine and internal medicine physicians are both classified as primary care providers, but provide care to different age ranges. Most internal medicine physicians care for adult and geriatric patients. Family practice physicians see adult, pediatric, and geriatric patients.

Q: Why did you select family medicine as your specialty? A: I chose family medicine because I loved the idea of being able to care for patients throughout their lifetime from infants to seniors. I wanted a practice where I could develop long term relationships with a patient and their family to help them stay healthy.

Q: What is the first step when choosing a primary care physician? A: Just like anyone else, physicians also need healthcare Lauren Bessey, DO providers. So, if you are looking for a primary care physician I understand the situation you are in because I have been there also.

They are active fundraisers for local groups, Project Graduation, cancer research and most notably the Special Olympics. Totta explains, “It’s important to give back and we try to do so by not only raising funds for the Special Olympics, but by hiring their athletes. We have two working for us now.” For the past few years, Habanero’s has partnered with Lee’s Summit Police officers to raise money for the Special Olympics. With their rather hilarious “Cop on Top” fundraiser, two local of-

ficers will camp on top of the building until they each raise $5,000. In addition, passengers can check the Habanero’s Facebook page for information about their “Tip a Cop” fundraiser, where they will add 8-12 local police officers to their flight crew for a night hoping to raise even more than the $6,000 they raised last year. With their top notch flight crew, unique dishes, generosity and real life Piper Tomahawk, Habanero’s truly is a staple for the Lee’s Summit community. There are many reasons to visit, but perhaps they express it best when they say, “It’s just plane good.”

Sinclair’s Casual Dining with Upscale Elegance Article Jason Lahey Photography McKenna Mathewson

T

he locally owned and operated Sinclair’s restaurant is an absolute gem. Located just off 7 Highway in Blue Springs, this upscale bistro/pub blend is sure to delight anyone out for a time of casual yet fine dining. Their imaginative approach to conventional pub cuisine is truly worth experiencing. The entrees, at their most fundamental levels, can be found at most quality bars, but the chefs at Sinclair’s use care and sophistication to bring their dishes to whole other levels of quality and uniqueness. The restaurant doors open to a gorgeous fully stocked bar with intimate seating perfect for after work get-togethers. With a robust drink menu and $5 happy hour appetizers, Sinclair’s has created a wonderfully niche place to gather. The restaurant has two main dining rooms decorated with simple elegance in a beautifully modern style. While one of the dining rooms stays open for walk-in guests, the other can be reserved for parties of eight or more. Larger groups (up to 45) can reserve this second dining room as a private space at no charge, making it rather ideal for weddings, birthdays or corporate gatherings. The food is all prepared in house from scratch using fine ingredients. Before ordering, my wife and I were provided a delightful basket of home made potato chips. These were clearly made from scratch from razor thinly sliced potatoes salted and fried in a delicate oil. I began my meal with an order of Loaded Potato Croquettes ($6.50). This rather pleasing starter blended bacon, cheddar, scallions, Yukon mashed potatoes and sour cream in a lightly fried crust. My wife shared a Sinclair Salad ($7) that elegantly combined romaine, red onion, kalamata olives, walnuts, feta and sundried tomatoes in a way that each ingredient enhanced the flavors of the rest. The house vinaigrette was simply incredible if not the best I’ve had. For entrees, I chose the Swordfish Soft Tacos ($15.50) while my wife thoroughly enjoyed an Oso Pork Sandwich ($10.50). The fish tacos were a perfect blend of blackened spices, black bean corn salsa, lettuce,

When eating at a fine dining establishment one hopes to get well taken care of. This is most certainly the case at Sinclair’s. Chloe and Kelly Manz

A Race for the Littlest Hearts Article Lisa Gartland | Photography Provided

T

he calendar says February, but the Manz family is already counting down to a special day in May for the second annual Run for Little Hearts race at Unity Village on Sunday, May 3. Run for Little Hearts is a fundraiser to increase awareness and help support families with children diagnosed with congenital heart defects. Just over six years ago, Chad and Kelly Manz were new parents of a little girl named Chloe. On that November day, Kelly’s joy of becoming a mother was overshadowed by a persistent, horrible feeling that she could not shake. Chloe was her first baby, and admittedly, she had little experience with babies in the past. Nonetheless, Manz repeatedly asked the nurses to check and recheck her newborn, and they repeatedly tried to reassure her that the baby was healthy. But Manz just knew something was wrong. Manz, too worried to take her eyes off of Chloe to sleep that first night, insisted that Chloe stay in the nursery so she could be monitored. Still anxious, Manz even took a walk to peek at her daughter through the window around midnight. She did not see Chloe but noticed a team of medical personnel hurrying toward the nursery. Manz did not realize it at the time, but three hours later she and Chad learned that the team had rushed to the nursery at midnight because there was, indeed, something very wrong with their baby. 22

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | February 2015

Through a Pulse Oximetry Screening, Chloe was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart defect (CHD) that required a transfer to Children’s Mercy, oxygen and monitors at home, medical procedures and openheart surgery at 4 months old in Denver. When Manz learned that newborn Pulse Oximetry Screenings were not standard for all newborns, she was shocked. It is an inexpensive and noninvasive assessment that can detect many CHD problems. Manz’s unrelenting mother’s intuition resulted in Chloe’s screening, but it could have easily been dismissed as new parent fatigue or anxiety. Manz felt she had to do something to ensure all babies are screened at birth. She wrote a bill in 2009 that would require the test for all babies born in Missouri. After several years of navigating the complicated political process, Chloe’s Law finally passed the Missouri House and Senate, and went into effect on Jan. 1, 2014. Other states quickly followed Missouri’s lead. Now, fewer than 10 states remain to pass a similar law, and Kansas is one of them. Manz explains, “Most Kansas hospitals in this area routinely administer the screening, but many in rural areas do not. That’s why it needs to be law.” Even after the law was passed, Manz recognized that awareness of CHD was low. She organized the inaugural Run for Little Hearts last May. It was promoted on social

media, and she expected around 100 participants. A month before the event, 400 runners had signed up. Surprised, Manz scrambled to prepare for the larger number and hopes to see it continue to grow this year. Run for Little Hearts donates 100 percent of proceeds locally to several groups. The CHD Families Association provides support and opportunities for kids, including a medically supervised camp, Camp Systole. Children’s Mercy Hospital receives donations for congenital heart defect research, and Little Light Foundation provides care packages for pediatric patients and memory bags for families who have lost a child. Chloe, now a busy kindergartener, is well and part of an active young family including little sister, Kenna, 3. She faces at least one more open-heart surgery in the next few years, to repair a leaky valve. Chloe is the inspiration behind Run for Little Hearts. Options are available at Run for Little Hearts for all ages and abilities: kids’ activities, noncompetitive awareness walk, 10K, 5K and Kids’ Dash. This event will take place rain or shine. Strollers are welcome and families are encouraged to participate together. It will be held at Unity Village, 1901 NW Blue Parkway. February is Heart Month, so now is the perfect time to register. Information about registration and sponsorship opportunities can be found at RunForLittleHearts.com.

The Value of Business Article Mayor Randy Rhoads

N

o city wants to see a business relocate out of town. It’s not in our nature, against our mission and virtually always leaves a void, whether that business has been in town four months or 40 years. As the business environment becomes increasingly competitive, so does the need for cities to follow suit, both aggressively pursuing new business ventures and encouraging existing businesses to stay, grow and prosper. Sometimes these goals are met with incentive packages designed to help promote job growth, business expansion and future investment. And when the stars align among business ambition and city objectives, the result can be a long-lasting and healthy business relationship. Recently, a long-standing business made headlines by announcing its intention to move out of Lee’s Summit to a neighboring city. Both sides worked for months on a deal that would mutually benefit both the manufacturer’s expansion wishes and financial goals while maintaining a respected employer and community partner. 24

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | February 2015

The City of Lee’s Summit’s commitment to the cause included a 30 percent incentive over 20 years for the company to stay, expand and keep the workforce in town. Unfortunately the efforts fell short of expectations by the company. Lee’s Summit’s incentive package, had it been accepted, was on the books as the most generous the city has ever offered a company, including past Tax Increment Financing deals on local retail lifestyle centers and other packages offered over the years. So why incentivize? The regional business market has become increasingly competitive in the last decade. As business CEOs and owners look into their futures for development, job growth and, ultimately, profitability, they are looking for the best business deal as well. It behooves a municipality to look at each project on its own to see what benefit, if any, a new or expanding business will bring to the table. How many new jobs will move to town? What kind of infrastructure investment will be made? What are the potentials for future growth, both in tax base and employees? The default arguments of any city fighting for business will never be “win some, lose some.” Each project, every development and all new business plans come with them a set of risks, opportunities, challenges and potential rewards. In looking out for the residents, a city takes squarely on its shoulders the burden of putting together the best plans and best packages that will not only prove business-friendly, but in the best interest of those nearly 100,000 residents that call Lee’s Summit home. City of Lee’s Summit leaders do put value in local jobs and the local economy. Any current business expressing an interest in growing right here in town is immediately on the radar. In the past year, the Development Center at City Hall has assisted more than 90 business prospects, with projects ranging from offices to multi-unit housing to 30,000-square-foot companies. As of the end of 2014, 21 projects were applied and in the process, 26 had moved to permit phase and several had been completed, including the HyVee Gas redevelopment project on Langsford Road. Many more projects are in the conceptual phase, which continues help fulfill that goal – showing that Lee’s Summit does mean business. And a quick glance at the recent $2.4 million incentive package to a local manufacturer solidifies that continued promise. New buildings, jobs and expansion continue to crop up all over Lee’s Summit, from north of Colbern Road, east to Legacy Park and south to Highway 150. From our planning and codes division to our street crews, water department and public works, nurturing a welcoming and stable business environment will always be a priority here. Giving Back

Co-Founders Dana Shoaf and Kristi Seaton

Made to Serve

A servant’s heart allows this non-profit organization to foster a strong sense of community Article Ann E. Butenas Photography McKenna Mathewson

I

t has been said that when one person gives, two people receive. Lee’s Summit resident Dana Shoaf fully understands that sentiment and when it comes to giving, her heart has no limits. She also understands that everyone, no matter what their resources, also has something to give. As an integral part of the non-profit organization, Made to Serve, Dana, along with co-founder Kristi Seaton, is excited about beginning their fourth year of serving those less fortunate in the community. The primary goals of this organization are to identify where food insecurity exits in the community and to provide temporary relief through food supplies, a meal or necessities, while simultaneously developing long term plans to alleviate those needs. “Kristi had already been making this a practice of her own in Kansas City,” notes Shoaf, who, inspired by Kristi, felt the need to help out in her community. “We started this practice in downtown Kansas City by providing necessity bags filled with socks, soaps, shampoos and a lunch,” says Shoaf. In doing so, Shoaf came to realize that, while you don’t necessarily see the homeless or working poor on the street corners in Lee’s Summit as one might expect in

downtown Kansas City, there is an underserved demographic in this community. According to Shoaf, statistics suggest that Jackson County has an 18 percent food insecurity rate, which is higher than the state of Missouri’s overall rate of 15 percent. “There’s definitely a need here,” she emphasizes. To that end, Shoaf, along with a team of core volunteers, distributes food and supplies once a week on a pre-designated route through Lee’s Summit. “We have also connected with Pro Deo Youth Center, a local youth program, and took over their weekly bread run and expanded it to those we know are in need,” notes Shoaf. According to Shoaf, so many of the food insecure are often unseen, but they all have their own story and sometimes when Made to Serve volunteers deliver the products, they take the time to just talk to them and get to know them. “It is important to talk to them, look them in the eye, and recognize their value,” she urges. Unique to this program is the understanding that everyone, no matter how little someone has, always has something to give. “We like to get the people we serve involved,” explains Shoaf. “There may be times when we give a little more to someone and then ask them to give that to friends and family members they know could use it. That gives them a sense of responsibility and helps them to understand they have value and that they can still give to others. This is not just a hand out. It’s a way to help people develop an open mind and ask how they can also reach out and touch somebody.” A variety of opportunities exist to volunteer with Made to Serve, including making a donation, riding along for food deliveries, hosting a party, forming a team, or assisting with distribution. Made to Serve also relies on donations from the community. Additionally, Made to Serve offers grocery assistance throughout the week and other programs and activities, including frozen dinner parties and once-a-month meals for Pro Deo’s family nights and Single Mom’s KC meetings. “We also have a small kitchen and pantry on Chipman Road at The Commons and eventually plan to build a community kitchen where we can do our food prep and teach basic cooking skills and teach people how to cook on a budget and also make nutritious meals,” explains Shoaf, differentiating this proposed plan from that of a typical soup kitchen. For Shoaf, her commitment to Made to Serve is not a job, but a lifestyle, and one to which she has wholeheartedly dedicated herself, along with her phenomenal team of enthusiastic volunteers.

Unique to this program is the understanding that everyone, no matter how little someone has, always has something to give.

Necessity Is the Mother of Invention A Book Review for All of Us Article Anne Potter Russ

“Where does stuff go when it dies, does it go to stuff heaven?” – George Carlin

R

ead This When I’m Dead is a brilliant book/manual born out of necessity for these two compelling authors. Annie Presley and Christy Howard could not have had more completely different experiences when dealing with death and illness in their families, but they turned that angst and hindsight into a compact directive for the rest of us: write down your stuff! Annie’s and Christy’s book is, “A Guide To Getting Your Stuff Together For Your Loved Ones.” Heeding their advice can only make our own life transitions easier. Case in point – Annie’s mother died in her arms (literally) when Annie was 12 years old. She was left with a 13-year-old brother, a 2-year-old sister and a divorced father. Her mother had left no instructions, no memories, no guidance, no small notes of love and fun from Annie’s short childhood. On the other hand, Christy’s mother was diagnosed with a rare and oft-labeled terminal disease when Christy was a freshman in college. After multiple “goodbyes,” Christy is thrilled to tell us that her mother is very much alive today, and jokes that her mom might have more lives than a cat. No matter the circumstances, both ladies tell us, there is only one thing that makes the transition of illness and death more bearable, and that is advanced planning and information. This

book is sensitively written with a dose of humor, and a lot of good old-fashioned common sense. It is an interactive manual for you to fill out, and it is divided into three sections: My Personal Information; The Business Side of My Life; and My Final Wishes. Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to tell your loved ones – through this book – who you are, where your stuff is, where you would like it to go, what your business information is, and what you would like to have happen when you die. Although it may seem a bit jarring at first to contemplate your mortality, it is an incredible gift to your loved ones for you to write down the essentials of your life. And, not everything has to be law firm and bank phone numbers. There are plenty of spaces for you to write memories, thoughts, funny stories, and what kind of food your pet eats. Christy and Annie are helping us sort out the details of our chaotic lives… right now. They are also helping our loved ones later by helping us create this guide to show our final wishes. As many of us already know, the deaths of loved ones can be earth-shaking – emotionally and logistically. Using this tool takes the confusion and helps transition that into some calm and understanding in a fragile time. This book can be found at BooksByAce.com.

The

Kansas City Originals Vibrant & Growing in 2015

Article Morgan Alan More | Photography Provided

K

ansas City can proudly boast an acknowledged national leadership in providing unique and cutting-edge dining experiences. And it is definitely a place where diners seek and crave independent restaurants. Countless surveys in recent years demonstrate that most diners prefer one-of-a-kind dining establishments rather than their upscale chain counterparts by the wide margin, in one survey, 81 percent versus 19 percent. Diners of all kinds are also looking for menu variety, international flavor and an intimate, welcoming atmosphere. The Kansas City Originals community, more than 45 concept restaurants with 57 locations (some have multiple locations around the metropolitan area), are an independent restaurant group providing just those kind of experiences. Stretching back to its founding in May 2001 the group was determined to raise awareness of the city’s culinary and cultural strength and formed an association representing a diversity of concepts - from fine dining to casual - and serving an international banquet of cusines - French, Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Thai, Japanese, and of course, American in many styles. Out-going KCO President Christopher Youngers, an owner of Cafe Trio, is passionate about this mission. “Our members strive to be the absolute best not only in Kansas City, but also in the entire Midwest as well. What sets us apart is that we are all locally owned, independent and most certainly Original!” says Youngers. “Our mission is to offer our customers more variety, more passion, more flair and much more love and care than any of our corporate competitors. In Kansas City, if you want to eat well and eat local, then you want to dine at an Originals member venue.”

Another major focus of the KC Originals is community involvement. Local restaurants like local bookstores, hardware stores and coffee shops support their communities. The dollars spent in local restaurants stay in Kansas City and local restaurants support vital local charities. Greg Morey, who serves the Originals group by coordinating advertising and marketing says “the group as well as individual restaurant owners and staffs are very committed to making an impact in supporting a wide variety of charitable agencies.” Some hold food drives for specific neighborhood churches or organizations like Operation Breakthrough. Several support Harvesters. Over the years, the group has helped sponsor major events like KCPT’s “TV Dinner” to help fund children’s programming, the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s “Serving Up Cures” annual event, and the annual Shadow Buddies Foundation’s “Holiday Hugs” toy drive. The Loyalty Rewards Power Card program is a great benefit offered by the KC Originals restaurants and has more than 70,000 guests signed up at this time. The diners accumulate points for each dollar spent. “Once they spend $150 at a member restaurant or at several, they earn a $10 reward bonus. These earned discounts are tracked in the guest’s account and can be redeemed for up to 50 percent off their dining bill at any member restaurant. The program is easy to join and free. AN ACT OF HONOR AND LOVE Article Evelyn Maxey | Photography Nick Welch & Provided

O

n October 24, 2014, a perfect fall day, our grandson, Garrett Maxey, of Raintree Lake, and Miss Emma Fritts of Prairie Village, were married in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at Locust Grove in Weston. The changing color of the trees made a lovely backdrop for the ceremony, as well as a carpet of colorful leaves on the ground. My husband David and I were married 61 years ago on March 15, 1953. My two aunts, Catherine Fulton and Jean Allen and my mother, Ida Martin, designed and made my wedding gown. I requested scallops around the neck and around the peplum. It was not an easy task and I remember them on the living room floor, cutting scallops using a tea cup for a pattern. It was a labor of love, including the 50 fabric-covered buttons and fastening loops. We recently moved to John Knox from our home in Blue Springs. Many of our belongings had to go because of the downsizing. Unknown to us, our son, Don and his wife, Pam, Garrett’s parents, found my wedding gown and moved it to a closet in their home. Emma and Garrett met at the University of Missouri and graduated in May. On a visit to the Maxey home, Emma saw my wedding gown and asked about it. She told herself that if Garrett proposed to her, she would wear that gown. Happily, he proposed and she began the restoration of the gown, with the Maxey’s blessings. But it was a kept secret between her parents, Theresa Hecht and Don and Mary Lou Fritts, her grandmother Nadine Kenney and the Maxeys and Garrett’s other grandpar36

ents, Marilyn and Delmar Watts. Neither Garrett, nor my husband and I, knew about it until the wedding day. They were all so excited to finally reveal their secret! The gown was cleaned beautifully and altered for a perfect fit. When we arrived at the wedding, there was Emma, looking so lovely, in my wedding gown! I was so amazed, I was speechless. What a sweet act of love and honor for her new family. We knew then that our new granddaughter-in-love, Emma, would always hold a special place in our hearts. Worship Time

Gathering to Worship at GracePointe Community Church LiveWire is the weekly gathering of our Student Ministry. We’re dedicated to providing a place for students (6th -12th grade) to connect with God, with other students, and with older committed leaders that are dedicated to seeing students grow closer to Christ. We want to engage and reach this youth culture. We meet on Wednesday nights at 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the Gamber Center. Kids Alive is a family ministry rooted in Deuteronomy 6:7 which says this about God’s commandments: “Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Parents are the spiritual leaders of the home. Our goal is to empower and support parents in that role by providing tangible resources, such as devotional guides, our Facebook page GPCC Parents as Leaders, What are some of the missions you are involved with? and personal guidance. We provide the whole family with a biblical Because we believe in reaching out to our city, we have supported worldview so that in those critical life moments our kids can make groups such as Lee’s Summit Social Services, Rachel House and the decisions based on God’s truth. Our vision at GracePointe Community Church is summarized in a single statement: “We want to be a welcoming community that offers love, hope, acceptance and grace.” We base our vision statement on Jesus’ teaching: “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” (John 10:10) Out of the mundane, stressed-filled, judgmental, and condemning culture, comes a life-filled voice that offers us love, hope, acceptance and grace. If you’re tired, hungry, and wanting more, Jesus offers to you and to each one of us a “rich and satisfying life.” He intends for you to “live fully alive!”

he Lee’s Summit Fire Department is honored to announce the selection of Specialist/Paramedic Jim Childers as the Lee’s Summit Fire Department’s 2015 Firefighter of the Year. Spec/PM Childers was chosen for his dedication to providing the highest level of service to citizens of Lee’s Summit and his positive attitude and strong work ethic. The nomination also acknowledged an incident where Childers performed a difficult, seldom-used medical procedure that significantly contributed to saving the life of a patient in his care. Childers is a 14-year veteran of the fire department and is assigned to Station 1 (207 SE Douglas Street) on the B-shift. The Fire Department and Awards Committee, as well as the residents of Lee’s Summit, congratulate Spec/PM Childers on his outstanding service to the community.

oday, American roadways once carved by pioneers are lined with rustic roadhouses, classic diners and rural restaurants that highlight the renowned foods in each region—from fried chicken stands to barbecue joints, delis to crab shacks, and bakeshops everywhere that celebrate the all-American slice of pie. At home, American traditions embrace both history and family, in classic Thanksgiving feasts and picnics on quilts with ice cream under a night sky filled with fireworks on our nation’s birthday. The food of the Midwest is the last untold tale in modern American cooking, but it’s a central one—in every sense of the word. In the 19th century, farmland in the middle of the country was cheap, attracting thousands who hoped to make their living off the land. For others, the Midwest was the last stop before the arduous journey west. Some travelers kept going, but others stayed put, and their traditions and recipes took root with them. For us, the roots of our love of food and cooking, the inspiration for becoming chefs—and really, a big part of the reason we were

drawn to each other—reach back to our own family tables: Colby’s in Kansas and Megan’s in Illinois. Born and bred in the middle of America, we share the same memories of fresh corn off the stalk in hot summers, slow-cooked meats, and handmade sweets that filled our grandmas’ homes. The recurring theme in this book is family: Made In America is profoundly based on tradition, and here in the middle, recipes are shared among families, passed along through a “potluck” of cards tucked into a tin box or just by watching your grandmother at work in the kitchen. You pick up a recipe box to make pies and you know the recipe for pickling garden vegetables by heart. In this cookbook, we share our simple approach to food and cooking—the kind of cooking we do in our own kitchen at home. “Give the people what they want” is a phrase we used a lot when creating our restaurant, Rye, showcasing the food and flavors of the Midwest. In this book we intend to do the same: offer humble recipes, stories from around our table, and a new perspective on what it means to be from the middle and how we cook, eat and live.

"For a country that’s famous for its amber waves of grain, the landscape of American food is amazingly diverse and colorful, woven with the flavors of every culture that has added to our collective heritage."

Acura’s Compact RDX is Loaded with Technology and Comfort Article and Photography Tom Strongman

C

ompact crossover utility vehicles are one of the hottest segments, mostly because these sensibly sized vehicles are a perfect fit for empty nesters, young couples or families with two kids. In many ways, they’re the contemporary equivalent of a station wagon and they’re much cooler than a minivan. Acura’s premium compact RDX is an excellent example of why the segment is so popular. It has most of the amenities one expects in an entry-level luxury car yet the cargo space, easily expanded by folding down the seat, is big enough for bags of yard mulch, home improvement materials or the occasional bicycle or two. The RDX styling bears a familial resemblance to the larger MDX but it is not quite as visually exciting as some of its newer competitors. That can actually be a good thing

as gimmicky styling doesn’t always age well. Base prices start at $35,790 for frontwheel drive and top out at $40,890 for all-wheel drive with the Technology Package. That is the model I drove from Acura’s press fleet. The leather-trimmed interior has an abundance of soft-touch materials, and the instrument panel is pleasingly styled. The front seats are among the best I’ve experienced because they have support in all the right places. Straightforward controls are easy to use, and the 8-inch LCD screen in the center of the dash delivers an excellent picture from the rearview camera. All RDXs have Bluetooth connectivity, a rear view camera with three viewing options, a Pandora radio interface, SMS text messaging function, dual-zone climate control and a power moonroof.

The test car’s Technology Package included a voice-activated navigation system, an eight-inch LCD screen in the center of the dash, rearview camera and the ELS 10-speaker audio package that is among the best in any car, regardless of price. The tech package also includes AcuraLink with Real-Time Traffic, a system that alerts the driver to traffic congestion and offers automatic re-routing. Real-Time Weather is also a part of the package. The RDX sits on a 105.7-inch wheelbase that is 2.6 inches longer than that of a Honda CR-V, for example, and it is about five inches longer overall. Acura is the American luxury division of Honda. The RDX is not related to the popular CR-V, other than coming from the same company. Because the RDX is taller than a sedan it is not quite as agile in corners. The upcontinued >

right driving position gives good visibility and makes it easy to get in and out. The V-6 in the RDX delivers 273 horsepower. All-wheel-drive fuel economy is rated at 19 miles per gallon in the city and 27 on the highway. The new all-wheel drive system is simpler and lighter than the one it replaces. When starting from rest, power is shifted to the rear wheels, but then power is distributed from front to rear in concert with the vehicle stability system depending on road conditions. The rear wheels are decoupled on the highway for reduced drag and better fuel economy. The transitions are seamless and done automatically. Price The base price of the test vehicle was $39,995. Destination charges brought the sticker price to $40,890. Warranty Four years or 50,000 miles with a six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty.

At A Glance

The RDX is almost perfectly sized. It is big enough to haul things yet small enough to be maneuverable in urban settings. The cabin is plush and well equipped. Point:

The previous RDX had a spunky personality but the new one is a bit less sporty.

Parting Thoughts

Mulling Over the Wine Reviews Words Denise Snodell

I

was a weary shopper looking for a simple Riesling when my innocent eyes fell upon this: “Opens with a gorgeous bouquet of yellow flowers, stone fruit and musk against a backdrop of chalk and minerals. It’s richly fruity, with a sharp, honed acidity that’s shocking and penetrating. Finishes long, with an elegant honeyed touch.” Wuuut? I wasn’t sure if I was in a liquor store or in some seedy place reading Fifty Shades of Grapes. As E.L. James would say, “Holy cow!” I looked left. I looked right. I unlocked my cell phone and photographed the posted review card. The description of this pricey 94-pointer just floored me. I had to have it. The words, not the bottle. It’s an old story. Those of us who are, shall we say, less experienced wine lovers are intrigued and bemused by the industry’s word sommeliers. They can be a bit too passionate, or even bizarre, when explaining the flavor subtleties trapped beneath the cork. Call me a rube, but I don’t think my taste buds could ever fathom a backdrop of chalk. Yet the words quoted above had been fermenting in my cell phone picture gallery for a full season, and I had this crushing column deadline. The time arrived to fully investigate this exotic verbiage at a bigger wine store. Lo and behold, my research day coincided with a storewide wine tasting. Everywhere I turned, there was a rep tempting customers with sips of their forbidden fruits. They were stationed at the aisle endcaps, pouring samples of “honed acidity” and “deeply pitched notes of blistered tomato and pomegranate.” It was like a high octane Saturday at Costco. The place was crowded, but I managed to sneak some shots of

the review cards. I honestly had no idea a bottle of pinot could tease your palate with supple tannins that build slowly to frame a sappy floral pastille, but apparently it can. I hadn’t quite snapped enough reviews when a champagne expert waved me over to her table. As I slammed down a few sips of Taittinger, I explained why I was there, “I am baffled at how specific and bizarre some of these booze reviews can be. For instance, how can you taste underbrush? Underbrush! Do these aficionados crawl through the woods and chomp on low lying twigs?” She shrugged and told me descriptions including “forest floor brambles” are, indeed, a thing. But, as she poured me something dryer, she said linking squirrel environments to Syrah was the least of the crazy. “I’ve actually seen reviewers use the words ‘manure’ and ‘cat pee.’” I was stunned. “Really? Surely they finessed the descriptions with something like ‘hints of fertile meadow and subtle feline mist.’” Though concerned, I managed a quick sip of the dry stuff. But as she poured me yet another sample, she insisted, “No. The exact words were manure and cat pee.” Wow, I thought. Animal droppings. The dark forest’s underbelly. It was dizzying to imagine the wine scribes getting so noir. But a funny thing happened. We continued discussing all the weirdness right there under the fluorescent retail lights. I was on my fifth (or sixth or seventh) sample and—boom—I tasted it. My senses took me back to a private champagne cave tour I was fortunate to experience years ago in Reims, France. That one sip blossomed into a sweet, yet musty-dry medieval tapestry of tarnished armor, lightly sun-kissed by a lavender reduction… In other words, I think the secret to writing this stuff requires a full immersion.
