Dr. John C. Maxwell

Leaders like you become catalysts for change when they do three things: pick a problem to address, invite others to join

days; people know when a leader is being half-hearted, and they

people to a cause that you aren’t willing to own, especially these don’t respect it. When you pick a problem to solve or a cause to rally around, you must have conviction in order to succeed. Over the years, I’ve learned that whenever I feel a sense of conviction about an issue, I need to start moving in the direction I believe I should go, even if I’m uncertain. Action creates ownership, and ownership creates credibility with people. And you need that credibility because transformation cannot be done by one person alone—we all need people to join us on the journey. CONTINUED >

2. Invite Others to Join You When you’ve settled on the problem you want to tackle you should immediately begin looking for others to join you. In the book, Rob and I recommend starting with friends and family; you already have influence with them, and chances are you’re of like mind in many areas. Go to those family members who frequently ask you for advice or seek your opinion on personal matters, as you likely have greater influence with them. To move beyond family, however, you’ll need to take a leap of faith and begin sharing your passion for solving the problem with other people. Passion attracts, and when people come to you with interest, don’t be afraid to ask them what they think or invite them to improve your ideas. Empowering people to help you creates a bond, and once that bond is established, you will quickly discover who you can truly work with and invite them to take action with you.

3. Do What You Can Where You Are Action is the final step. It doesn’t have to be big or grand; it doesn’t even have to be guaranteed of success. Nothing happens in life until someone does something, and once you take your first step, the next step will come into focus. Remember that transformation is a process, not an event. It takes time and repeated action to bring about positive change. So focus on purpose, not perfection, and do what you know to do. These three steps may seem too simple, but I assure you they work. The goal of all transformational movements is making things better however possible. Incremental change is better than the status quo; and when you’re truly committed to making your community a better place, you know that any improvement is a significant improvement.

“I collect vintage Matchbox Toys – the toys my brothers and I played with when we were kids.” People often ask me if I have a favorite among the toys on my shelves. Without hesitation I tell them about the 1959 Chevrolet Impala that was released into the Matchbox Toys range in 1961. You can tell how often I played with this toy by the number of paint chips it endured. It was my favorite then, as it is now because it was just like the car my Uncle Paul piloted on the streets of Toledo throughout the first half of the 1960s. Unlike my Impala, Uncle Paul’s car was immaculate. Heck, you could have eaten dinner off of his garage floor. Uncle Paul led by quiet example. Humility, kindness and a cool car went a long way in making a positive impression on me. Many of the ways in which we creatively serve our community through the dental office today are rooted in the generous spirit I experienced through my Uncle Paul.

Who is the Uncle Paul in your story? How will you keep her or his legacy alive and still speaking as you make your way into and through the New Year with intention?

I’d love to hear your plan! Contact me at DrDavis@GregoryDavisDDS.com GREGORY P. DAVIS | D.D.S. BRIANNA M. WEBB | D.M.D. (513) 459 -1377 Gregor yDavisDDS.com 4834 Socialville-Foster Rd, Mason, OH

A Step Up In Safety DR. ROBERT M. BRARENS OFFERS ADVICE FOR KEEPING FEET AND ANKLES SAFE AND HEALTHY WHILE EXERCISING.

IT’S A NEW YEAR, AND MANY PEOPLE ARE GETTING BACK TO THEIR WORKOUTS WITH

trauma to the end of the toes and nails.”

M. Brarens has some key advice to help keep you safe.

What are some safe stretches that promote foot and ankle safety? “Do not bounce when you stretch. A stretch performed appropriately and held for 30 seconds has been shown to be more effective than repeated quick bouncing-type stretches. It’s also safer for tendons and their attachments, especially as we age.”

What kinds of shoes should you wear to ensure foot and ankle support while exercising? “It’s best to wear a shoe that is appropriate for the exercise you’re performing. If you’re hiking you should have a hiking style athletic shoe or boot. When running, you should have an appropriate running shoe. For the most part, a cross trainer will provide more support and stability if performing regular exercises including walking, dance fitness, and circuit or weightlifting.”

What should you do if you’re experiencing foot pain when exercising? At what point should you seek medical attention? “Regular exercisers often have small strains that are self-limiting. If pain is to a level that it is preventing normal walking, is increasing when you exercise, or is associated with bruising and/or swelling, it’s time to seek professional help.”

“Foot pain, like any pain, should not
