Hopelessly romantic! B
y now you have probably seen the little pink boxes of candy hearts out on display for sale in stores. The pastel pink, yellow, orange, green, purple and white hearts have little sayings written on them like “True Love,” “Please Be Mine,” “I Love You,” “You Are The One” and “Kiss Me.” Whenever I see them, I am reminded of the special class celebrations we had every year when I was in elementary school. I remember the excitement about that day beginning as early as 1st grade. It was so important that I always reminded my mom that we had to go buy the special printed Valentine cards for all of my classmates, and the delicious candy that would accompany them. Even back then, there always seemed to be a girl in my class that I chose to receive my “precious” Valentine every year. I took extra time with her Valentine card to make sure that my name was legible, and she always got more candy than the rest of the class. Even though that girl may have changed from year to year, the annual ritual remained the same. The affection I had for those girls was nothing more than a kind of puppy love until I graduated from elementary school. Junior high school and the onset of puberty drastically changed my view of girls and their role in my life. They were no longer just another person to play with at recess, or choose for my dodgeball team. They started wearing makeup, wearing pretty clothes and donning perfume. They started acting really peculiar, too. There was a lot of whispering, coy smiles and a lot of flirting. Girls had suddenly become very interesting and exciting. My puppy love had grown into a strong infatuation. As I moved into high school, the boys and girls started pairing up. There was hand-holding, hugging and kissing in the hallways between classes. It was during that time that I started dating. My approach and my manners were the result of the family values that had been instilled in me during my childhood. Honesty, integrity, love and respect for others were just a few of them. That respect was carried over into my behavior with women. My behavior was well received, because of the positive reactions from my dates when I opened their car doors, held doors for them, and helped them with their coats. In the years since high school, I have become more focused on making the quality time I spend with the one I love exceptional. I guess you could call me a “hopeless romantic." So this month’s issue is dedicated to all the hopeless romantics out there who love to hold hands, and take long walks in the moonlight. It is for those that enjoy candlelit dinners, and sending cards and roses just for the heck of it. It is also for those that love to serenade that special someone by singing or playing a song. This year on Valentine’s Day, spend some quality time with your partner by holding them close as you dance to soft music. Whisper sweet words in their ear, and hold their face in your hands as you gently kiss them. Embrace romance as the kindling of the fiery passion in your relationship, so that your love endures...and don’t forget the little candy hearts.

A Jeweler With Plenty of Heart Article Mary McGeachy
F
or nearly three decades, Alan Oskouian has been considered one of the most accomplished and well- respected jewelers in Orange County. In the ‘50’s Alan’s uncle was a jeweler and owned a few jewelry stores in what was then the small community of Orange County. Alan followed in his uncle’s footsteps and developed a love and an expertise for the art of jewelry design. Today, he is an importer of some of the best diamonds in the market place coupled with special custom design of fine jewelry which makes him a rare source. All the diamonds are certified by GIA or EGL, designed and assembled by some of the finest Italian crafters. His sensitivity to direct sourcing for all merchandise makes his product line much more desirable than many others. And, more important he strongly believes in building a long term relationship with his clients from generation to generation. One couple can’t say enough about the quality and care that Alan puts into his work. “There are two categories that should be evaluated when judging any business; quality of product and quality of service. Jewels by Alan receives a resounding five in both categories,” says Brian H. “His uniqueness of designs simply cannot be found anywhere else in Orange County. I had been a loyal customer of a local high-end jewelry store for almost fifteen years. It was my wife’s idea to stop by Jewels by Alan while shopping for an engagement ring. We left the store and both knew immediately that we would not be returning to our previous jeweler. Alan and his assistant Nasrin Anderson took the time to learn about us and help us both decide on a ring that suited her needs and personality. On two different occasions, while we were deciding, Alan called us to tell us that he had found a better diamond, both times at a better price. Since Alan and I spent so much time

together during this process, he was well aware of the surprise engagement party. Imagine our surprise when, on the big day, Alan and Nasrin showed up at the party bearing a gift. They were such an integral part in the planning of the day, that I felt I wanted to invite them, but I never dreamed they would come. What truly makes Alan and Nasrin special is that they have not lost sight of the deep emotional attachment and symbolism behind every piece of jewelry they sell. They both love ‘love.’ Isn’t that what you want when shopping for a forever symbol of love?”

n 1997, El Viento was founded by Corona del Mar residents, Jack Shaw and Ellen Shockro, to help underprivileged kids in the largely immigrant neighborhood around Oak View Elementary School in Huntington Beach. As one may know, the Spanish meaning of El Viento is “the wind.” El Viento allows these children to “take flight” and lifts them up. The organization is truly “the wind beneath their wings.” An after-school and summer enrichment program, El Viento makes a 10year academic commitment spanning 4th grade through the second year in college. College-going behavior is promoted at every level through tutoring, workshops and enrichment programs such as summer sailing, science projects, field trips to

museums, etc. Students’ and their parents’ expectations change as they learn that education and hard work increase future options and success. “These students are breaking a cycle of poverty inherent in their community,” says Colleen Mensel, CEO. “They overcome challenges many never have to think about: academic failure, gang involvement, drug use, teen pregnancy, illiteracy and a sense of hopelessness.” To put this community in perspective, according to the Index of Urban Hardship, published by the Rockefeller Institute, and assuming the Oak View community is a stand-alone city, the community of Oak View would rank the 11th most impoverished nationwide.
But that did not stop Itzel Rodriquez, an El Viento student who graduated from Ocean View High School last year and completed her sophomore year at California State University of Long Beach. “I don’t know where I would be without El Viento and I am forever grateful that the El Viento Foundation changed my life and my family in the best way possible,” Rodriquez says. In fact, all students who have participated in the program (450 students to date) have graduated high school so far and were the first in their family to do so and the first to attend college. All are currently attending—or graduated from— community colleges or four-year institutions. As students gain confidence, they
develop academic and social skills and individual success, they become role models for their peers and serve as catalysts for change in the Oak View community, building a model for other disadvantaged communities to emulate. Community collaboration heightens organizational capability and efficiency. El Viento’s success has been due in large part to the success of program partnerships, including: the Tiger Woods Learning Center; Girl’s Inc.; the Discovery Science Center; and the United States Sailing Center of Long Beach.
They are also fortunate to benefit from support and office space provided, in-kind, by the Coast Community College District, the Ocean View School District and the Huntington Beach Union High School District. The Captain’s Club program is $1,000 for one child per year. For more information or to give the gift of education to a deserving El Viento student visit ElViento.org or call Colleen Mensel, CEO at 714.892.8711 ext. 51052.

A Weekend for the Love of Jazz and the Great American Songbook Article Mary C. McGeachy

hen Joe Rothman was 10 years old he took his little transistor radio to bed with him every night and under the covers listened to Big Band remotes from ballrooms around the country…Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom, the Oh Henry in Willowbrook, Illinois, or, closer to home, New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria. That was New York in the late 40’s. Little did Joe know then, that today, he and his partner in jazz, California-born John McClure, would be running one of the most successful jazz weekend parties in the country, right here in Newport Beach. On the other hand, McClure from the West Coast and a Tustin native, was introduced to jazz and swing because his dad hosted parties in the family backyard which became known as “Jazz at Jack’s Place.” 16
Newport Beach Lifestyle | February 2015
Raised a continent apart, these two young men with jazz in their genes chanced to meet up in the hotel business. I talked with Joe recently at the Marriott in Newport Beach to hear about the genesis of this remarkable Jazz Party Weekend at the Marriott. It took a few years (31 to be exact) working for the Marriott before Joe could devote full time to his passion. After college and a stint in the Army, he joined Marriott Hotels in 1961 as a desk clerk in Washington DC. (Marriott had four hotels at the time and, yes, he knew the Bill Marriott). He worked his way up, eventually becoming general manager in Newport Beach (1975), Anaheim (1981) and San Diego (1987). It was at the Anaheim Marriott where Joe and John McClure met up and the concept of the West Coast Jazz Party was born.

In 1992, Joe retired from the hotel business and jumped right into creating the West Coast Jazz Party, the Newport Beach Jazz Party (with John) and Sunset Jazz at the Newport Summer Series. John continued in his career here as an associate vice president of convention sales at the Anaheim /Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau. However, last year he retired and like Joe, is thoroughly engaged in putting on the best music party on the West Coast. Over the years the fame of the musicians who appear at the Jazz Party has increased and been very impressive. I asked Joe how they are able to attract such talent. “It’s really word of mouth from the musicians who have been with us,” he says. “It certainly isn’t the money. They tell everyone it’s ‘a great hang.’ Which means it’s a great atmosphere, a beautiful area (i.e. Newport Coast), spouses and/or partners are invited (unlike most other gigs), and it’s a unique time for musicians to see each other and play with each other since most of them are on the road the majority of the time. And, the Marriott provides the best Green Room in the country stocked with all kinds of goodies. More important, everyone lets their hair down and schmoozes.”
Jump start your Valentine weekend on Thursday with Grand Opening Night beginning at 7:30 p.m. with the award winning, The Four Freshmen, considered by many to be the greatest jazz vocal group of all time. The second set will be a Salute to Benny Goodman and “Beyond” by the Ken Peplowski -Chuck Redd Quintet featuring Joe La Barbera. And closing this swinging first night will be Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band in a Salute to Sammy Nestico plus Australia’s gift to the jazz world, James Morrison. However, if you are not up to doing the entire weekend, you have got to consider Jack Jones for your Saturday night Valentine celebration. This third of four swingin’ nights and a cap to a memorable jazz filled Valentine’s Day, will begin with a roaring Jazz at the Philharmonic style set with James Morrison, Ken Peplowski, Don Shelton, Shelly Berg, Joe LaBarbera, Rebecca Kilgore plus 14 year old trumpet wonder Geoff Gallante! Second set will be a Salute to Billy Strayhorn with Eric Reed, Mike Gurrola, Willie Jones III and guest, Scott Hamilton. The 3rd “mini-concert” will present the great Jack Jones, who Tony Bennett claims to be “one of the great interpreters of the American Songbook, who is singing better and better and better.” The closing set will be a rousing Tribute to Buddy Rich by the Joe LaBarbera Quintet featuring Bill Cunliffe, Bob Sheppard, Clay Jenkins and Tom Warrington--all former members of the Buddy Rich Big Band. So at the end of this musical Valentine weekend if you haven’t won him, or her over with this musical interlude, you better just change your tune or change partners and dance. t’s close to dusk and the streets are crowded. Perfumers’ homemade scents waft toward the street, artists paint live exhibitions, young honeymooners walk hand-in-hand, and a few gentlemen in Bermuda shorts, with thick accents, discuss their fine cigars for sale. The night market I’ve stumbled upon is as lively and hip as the Rastafarian belting reggae lyrics on a nearby stage. This is Bermuda: a small island east of the United States whose name evokes feeling of adventure, romance and action. If you’re keen to break away from the beaten path, Bermuda’s beauty is bountiful. Most travel destinations boast page-long itineraries and daylong excursions in attempt to absorb as much local culture as possible. While I myself often fall victim to over planning for trips, I wanted to dedicate my time spent in Bermuda to simply enjoying the serenity of this tiny country or living the “island life,” so to speak. Thus, my family found it suitable that we spend our first day at the beach. We drove to the Beach Club at Rosewood Tucker’s Point Resort and in no time we were under an umbrella, sitting on lounge chairs sipping Bermuda’s most famous cocktail, the Rum Swizzle. The Beach Club has an intimate feel making it the perfect place for a peaceful respite; it is 18

We dawdled around Front Street until the aforementioned night market provided a resurgence of energy to us all and after a few rounds of dancing and drinks we were ready to call it a night. The following day we headed toward the Royal Naval Dockyard, an extremely busy port where many cruise ship passengers will call home for a few hours, if not longer. ordered seafood fritters and a drink then sat down. Shortly after an older man came out with my food and placed it in front of me. It was there I had my favorite meal of the trip: crispy, flakey fish, slathered in tangy sauce between two slices of freshly baked bread and perfectly seasoned fritters with a cake-like texture. The meal was perfect. I couldn’t understand how on an island full of tourists, most eating mediocre food at inflated prices, that a place like this was empty. On our final evening as my family enjoyed dinner, we sat around the table talking and laughing. Everyone recounted their favorite events of the past few days, wishing our time hadn’t come to an end. I laid in bed that night listening to the constant sound of swaying palm trees and tree frogs, while images of a romantic walk over powdery sand beaches near crystal clear Bermudian water appeared in my head. I had found my own slice of the island life for a brief time and fantasized of when I could return again.

Low-Fat Easy Recipes with Aphrodisiac Foods Article Suzette Zara | Photography Joy Reynolds

omance is in the air. One of the best ways to show your love is to whip up a romantic dinner for your sweetheart, packed with aphrodisiac foods. From an entrée of spicy salmon to a decadent chocolate mousse dessert, these easy recipes will impress your Valentine, without adding excessive fat, so that you look great when the candles go out. According to Greek myth, love goddess Aphrodite came down
from the heavens on a scallop’s shell. Ever since, scallops have been an aphrodisiac food by association. There is, however, scientific evidence from a 2005 study of its effect. Our skinny stuffed scallops recipe is mildly spicy with a savory breading; serving it in a perfect Aphrodite shell pumps up the romance quotient and makes any cook look like a gourmet chef! Best of all, all these recipes are quick to prepare, leaving plenty of time for a romantic evening. So, thrill your sweetheart with this romantic Valentine’s dinner, sure to satisfy the palate and heat up the night.

Though hectic schedules can cause many of us to let healthy habits fall to the wayside, it is important that we give our bodies the attention and care they deserve. Consider these small steps to gradually improve your whole body and heart health, which can help you enjoy a happier, longer life: • Strike a balance. Take a simpler approach to the traditional idea of “dieting.” Balance calories in versus calories out with a combination of good food choices, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and regular exercise, such as walking or hiking. Incorporate low-calorie, naturally fat-free foods into your diet, such as new Dole Red Grapefruit Sunrise Fruit Bowls, which bring all-natural fruit together with 100 percent juice. They are a great way to start the day or just enjoy as a delicious snack. Grapefruit naturally offers a plentiful source of nutrients, including phosphorus, potassium and vitamins A and C.
• Dine in the a.m. Don’t let a rushed morning routine get in the way of enjoying a heart-healthy breakfast. A complete morning meal includes a combination of whole grains, protein, and fruits or vegetables. For a convenient, on-the-go option, throw an individually-sealed cup of Dole Red Grapefruit Sunrise in your laptop bag or purse. Each cup contains peak-of-ripeness, wholesome, peeled grapefruit and allows you to enjoy grapefruit all year around. Plus, they’re gluten free, contain no GMOs (genetically modified or engineered ingredients) or artificial sweeteners, and feature BPA-free packaging. • Drink more water. For your body to function properly, it needs the right amount of hydration. According to the Institute of Medicine, the average required intake for a male is about 13 cups, while a female requires about 9 cups. Switch out sodas and sugary drinks with water to reap its benefits, and to shave off extra “empty” calories that may contribute to weight gain.
• Watch the middle. According to the Mayo Clinic, that extra weight you carry around the mid-section can cause serious health problems, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Work to keep this common problem area in check by reducing caloric intake and increasing physical activity.
• Get routine exams. A yearly doctor’s examination keeps you more informed of your body’s ever-changing status, and it keeps your health care provider in the loop, too. Educate yourself and understand the import numbers for your heart, including blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides.
• Skip the stress. While a little stress is part of being human, too much can be taxing on the heart. Find activities that engage your mind and naturally relieve stress such as knitting, crafting or working on a puzzle.
A happy life starts with the right mindset and a few easy routines. For more ways to boost your body’s wellness and healthy snack ideas, visit Dole.com.

Home Matters
Create Your Own Bathroom Retreat W
ith so much time spent in the bathroom, it is important to give that space a little TLC like the rest of the home. Almost everyone that enters your home sees your bathroom. From changing accessories to a total bath remodel, it is important that it receives a little refreshment. A bathroom should be an oasis, and the environment that it displays directly correlates with just how relaxing it is. While this room is seen as a place of relaxation in the home, it should also be designed for function. Bathroom vanities and furniture pieces are a way to incorporate both atmosphere and storage. These are two factors that can be incorporated in any bathroom, large or small, because the key is maximizing space and creating a calm environment through decor and accessories. Relaxation
Whether it’s coming home from a long day at work to a nice hot bubble bath or spending your morning getting ready and preparing for the day ahead, a bathroom is a place for a little peace and quiet. It is a retreat from the outside world, even if only for a moment. The environment desired should reflect individual style while still providing a calming presence. Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.’s Elegant Bath Collection provides the perfect selection of bathroom vanities and furniture pieces for everyone’s personal style in a variety of materials and finishes. From formal to contemporary, it is easy to find beautiful cabinetry for your bathroom. As far as aesthetics, cabinetry sets the mood for the room. Bathrooms can take on a warm environment and showcase a beautifully stained cherry furniture piece with glass doors, or they can give off a clean, cool feel with a white painted vanity. Sometimes a simple change of hardware is all a space needs to give it a fresh look. When eye pleasing pieces fill the room, it is 28

much easier to find your haven. One common misconception is that larger space equals a better bathroom. No matter the size, the key is having a well-designed bathroom that meets all needs. The smallest designs of bathrooms often give charm to the home. Function
Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. has a numerous amount of storage solutions for bathrooms that maximize space including the U-shaped drawer. Being shaped in a “U” is perfect for storage under the sink. This unique design takes into account the plumbing that is found taking up space and provides the opportunity to use the storage in the back. With a simple pull, all items become accessible. Bathrooms range in all kinds of sizes; however, it is important to know that no matter how large or small, a bathroom can incorporate relaxation and function. Storage is key in a bathroom for stowing towels, personal accessories and other items. Instead of looking at a small bathroom as lacking storage, get creative and try finding space in places you never before thought about. Tips for Decor
• Get inspired. Find that special something that becomes the inspiration for the entire bathroom. For example, maybe it’s a tile or even a framed picture. • Keep it organized. After your creative storage ideas are put to use, restore items to their original position to keep a tidy room. • Use open storage. When done correctly, displaying items can provide the bathroom with character. Find clear bottles to store extra shampoo and body wash and store it in a cute basket on an open shelf. Love Is In The Air Words Anne Potter Russ

ho knew boarding a simple airplane 23 years ago in my blue sweat suit (think ‘80s wear) would change my entire life? Certainly not me, or I might have dressed a bit snappier and put on a smidge of makeup and perfume. But, I had reached that elusive place of peace in my quickly-nearing-explosion biological countdown when I figured if the right guy was to come along, I best relax a bit and calm down. So, calm down I did and donned one of the ugliest outfits I had for sheer comfort. In walks my seatmate for our eighthour f light and we commence what could be termed as a date – dinner, movie, etc. There were way too many intelligent conversations, laughs and glasses of wine, and the next thing I knew, the sun was coming up on our trans-Atlantic f light and I didn’t want the fun to end. He was returning home to Germany, and I would eventually return home to Kansas City – worlds apart. He called a week later asking if he could come to visit for Christmas in a couple of weeks. “Sure!” I answered, not knowing how many martinis it would take to enlighten my parents of this impending event. So, I commenced, “I am 29 years old, you have trusted me this long, blah, blah, blah.” Their shock 34

equaled my freak-out. I’d known him for eight hours. When I went to the airport – in a much spiffier outfit – I actually wondered if I would recognize the gentleman who had wooed me weeks before. I had already endured all of the “are you CRAZY?” comments from friends, so I took my chances that he would at least look familiar. Honeymoon is the word we use for those two weeks of Christmas bliss. Without question, we would end up together, so two years of trans-Atlantic, pre-Internet, large phone bill dating ensued. There were some language and culture barriers to overcome, and fortunately for my non-German speaking self, he was excited to move to the States. We were married two years after meeting, and immediately moved to California for his engineering job. Now, I have to giggle at people with text and Skype who complain about having to endure long distance relationships from New York to Boston. Love at first sight does happen, and sometimes it comes in a big old jumbo jet of a package. We are ready to celebrate our 21st anniversary, and we have two wonderful teenagers. Maybe the blue sweat suit wasn’t such a bad choice after all.
