Editor's Letter
Welcome 2014
Do you have a New Year’s resolution? Making a resolution seems to be a rite of passage. You know, the act of promising to immediately stop doing x, y and z and then breaking that promise within hours, or days. Most of us have already reneged on the resolution we set for ourselves in 2014.

Sometimes I think people should resolve to do things they already do. For example, I resolve to do the laundry, take the dog for a walk and pick up my kids from school. I can say, with a high degree of certainty, I will succeed at these so-called resolutions. Ironically, I was recently asked if I had a New Year’s resolution. An awkward moment of silence ensued. I was stumped. Thinking back, I should have said something absurd like, “to get my oil changed every 3,000 miles” just to elicit a reaction. Although oil changes are important, they do not make for a strong resolution. It finally struck me: I’m not a resolution-maker. I ordinarily fail at my newfound promise by the second day of the year. I recall one time when I wrote out my resolution, only to find the piece of paper I wrote it on eight months later while packing to move. I remember thinking, “Oh yeah, I was going to do that,” and then tossing the paper into the trash. So here is what I propose. Rather than make promises I clearly cannot keep, I made a list of hopes for 2014:

1. I hope my laundry pile never exceeds my height. 2. I hope I never hear the word “ma’am” when someone is speaking to me. 3. I hope I can finally wean my children off chicken nuggets. 4. I hope I get carded. 5. I hope to start eating healthier … as soon as I eat all the junk food in the house so I will not be tempted. 6. I hope everyone I know will be happy, healthy and safe in 2014. The reality is—life doesn’t drastically change just because the calendar does. What the New Year really brings is a clean slate and a fresh start. Forget resolutions. Perhaps all we need is to take time to reflect on the past year, and be thankful for all of life’s blessings. Let’s resolve to embrace whatever life may bring to us in 2014.

TREE OF LIFE More than 20 families of organ donors united at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach recently to celebrate their loved ones’ life-saving gifts. Hospital officials unveiled a piece of art dedicated to their contribution. Leaves on the “Tree of Life” identify organ donors by name and the year they made their sacrifices. OneLegacy, an organ and tissue recovering organization, honored the donors along with the hospital’s employees. Between 2006 and 2010, Hoag had the largest number of tissue donations in Orange
County with 138 consented donors. An additional 29 donated their organs — the largest number for a non-trauma hospital in Orange County.

to rescue homeowners by seizing troubled mortgages and revamping them in a way affordable enough to avoid a foreclosing. Across the country, areas with large concentrations of homes worth less than their owners owe on them are considering using the power of eminent domain to help. The plan is particularly attractive to local governments because, not only will it keep residents in their homes and save them from defaulting, it would also deflect damage to property values that often go down in the event of mass foreclosures. The proposed strategy has evoked strong opinions on both sides.
UNDER FIRE Newport Beach residents may be one step closer to roasting marshmallows beachside over natural gas-burning fire rings. The city staff recommended that the City Council approve participation in a pilot project with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to install natural gas fire rings in certain beach areas, while also removing some of the existing wood-fueled fire rings. Currently, 33 fire rings are arranged in the sand near the Balboa Pier and 27 at Corona del Mar State Beach. Under the staff recommendation, the number of fire rings would be reduced to 15 and 12, respectively, rather than be eliminated completely as the council had previously voted.
EMINENT FRONT? As cities across the country consider the power of eminent domain to help their residents in danger of foreclosure, America debates whether or not it is fair. Eminent domain has a lot of critics. Some cities are using the power of eminent domain 10 Newport Beach Lifestyle | January 2014

These Are Not Your Mother’s Moisturizers P
arched skin plagues us every winter, and though it’s tempting to swap lightweight lotion for heavy cream and call it a day, it’s time for something different. How about a hydrator that creates a veil of H2O on skin, and feels lighter than water? Or a body emulsion that rebalances skin’s pH after a cold weather workout? Or a creamy mask that illuminates dull skin with light reflective minerals? Here are three products that promise to do all of that and more for your winter skin. Amarte Aqua Veil Hydrator: This cucumber-infused serum optimizes hydration by releasing droplets of pure H²0 onto the skin to form a protective veil. A toner and serum in one, it gives skin a silky, youthful radiance with an ultra-light finish that can be used along layered under other products to help retain their moisture, too. $65 at AmarteSkinCare.com or DermStore.com

Sebamed Derma-Soft Wash Emulsion: Traditional soap is way too alkaline for our skin and creates that dry, tight feeling. This emulsion is the winter alternative. It’s balanced at pH 5.5 (the same pH as healthy skin) and counteracts damage from windburn, redness, chapping and irritation by optimizing skin to protect itself from dehydration. Helps treat common winter skin conditions like eczema and premature wrinkling. $22.95 at area drugstores, including CVS, Rite-Aid and Bed, Bath & Beyond or SebamedUSA.com Repêchage Hydra Dew Illuminating Cream Mask: The natural light reflecting minerals in this seaweed-based moisture mask leave dry skin illuminated and virtually flawless. The trick – Don’t wash off with water! Leave a thin layer on for 10 minutes (or overnight for deep conditioning) and tissue off. Pat away excess with a damp cloth. $33, Available at Repêchage.com.

’m alone. Well not really alone. My steed is moving with a slow gait across the sandy terrain. The last set of mountain passes nearly killed us, but if we press on we’ll make it to our destination by nightfall. The sun is hot under my gnarly beard, and I long for a hot meal and a cold beverage. In the blink of an eye, I’m snapped out of my highway hypnosis by a car horn blaring nearby. I see my wife peering over at me from the passenger seat of our car. A mile marker draws near and we are elated to see Santa Fe listed on it. We left Oklahoma that morning, and were weary from the road. We wouldn’t reach California, our final destination, for a few days. My childhood memories of Santa Fe were fond ones, so I thought it would be the ideal place for an overnight stay.

of various agave elixirs, concoctions and serums. The ‘Dirty Old Man,” the “Boogie Woogie,” the “Get-A-Clue-Nee.” After further investigation, I noticed the list also included tequila-related information. Maria’s takes pride in using only 100% agave tequila made by fermenting 100% agave juices (other tequilas often contain sugar and water). As I read I learned about the ageing of tequila: Silver—fresh from the still; Reposado—60-plus days in an oak barrel, Anejo—1-plus years on oak. After careful consideration, we knew which margaritas we wanted to try. I ordered “My Old Hometown,” a 100% reposado with Bols Triple Sec; my wife chose “The Cheap Date,” 100% agave silver tequila mixed with Bols Triple Sec (I’m not sure if it was the altitude, my wife’s lack of body mass, or the tiring drive that day, but it was a cheap date indeed!). We also ordered New Mexican tacos and a Hatch Green Chile stew, both were phenomenal. I made a mental note to thank Arvin the following day, as his recommendation proved valuable. The next morning, we woke early and readied ourselves for another bout of gastronomic jousting. I knew we would be pressed for time, so again we went with an Arvin suggestion and made our way to Tia Sophia’s, the Hispanic-inspired café near the Plaza de Santa Fe. Despite it being early on a Sunday morning, the drive downtown was relaxing. People were out walking and riding bikes as the smell of burning wood filled the air, and music could be heard in the distance, as if the city had provided its own soundtrack. I had to make sure my highway hypnosis wasn’t creeping up on me again. The streets were quiet, with the exception of a few shop owners as they tidied up their small boutiques. As good as my chorizo and greenchili breakfast burrito at Tia Sophia’s was, it was overshadowed by the morning light as it reflected off adobe buildings interlaced with bright hues of blue, turquoise and pink. We pulled into the outskirts of town on the tail end of dusk. The mountains glowed with gold and pink hues as the temperature dropped. After a short search, we located a guest house—a quaint place south of the plaza area—aptly called the Exquisite Sanctuary. Arvin, the kind gentleman running the guest house, warmly welcomed us and gave us a short tour. After unloading our bags, we asked him to recommend a place to eat. He quickly suggested a popular place named Maria’s, “… a quaint place with hundreds of different margaritas,” he said. He explained how the margaritas are made and spoke about the other items on the menu. We were sold. Maria’s reception area was full of patrons in a chipper mood. Even those waiting seemed happy. We were seated in the waiting area and handed an “encyclopedia” of margaritas. Its pages were full January 2014 | Newport Beach Lifestyle 17

We made our way down East San Francisco Street toward the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, a truly stunning church. The first “phase” was constructed in 1610 by Franciscan Friars who accompanied Spanish colonists that were exploring the area. The version that stands today has changed significantly from its original adobe façade, but I highly doubt the prestige of this cathedral has ever been lessened. The church, named to honor the Patron Saint of Santa Fe, was elevated in 2005 to a Basilica by Pope Benedict XVI, meaning the church has a particular importance in Rome, as well

as in other areas abroad. Churches that are honored in this way are done so due to their importance in spreading Catholicism. After visiting the cathedral and enjoying its splendor, we meandered along nearby streets and came upon a small outdoor market. Artisans were selling woven rugs and colorful ceramic skulls honoring Dia de Los Muertos. Plump red peppers bunched together were set out to dry on racks as flute-playing Kokopelli sculptures stood guard nearby. By mid-morning the area was bustling with activity. People of all ages walked along the streets as art galleries displayed works as seen through open doors. A hearty, middle-aged man sat playing his guitar, which echoed melodic bass notes off surrounding stucco walls. Too soon, my time in Santa Fe came to an end. It was time to hit the road. I was sad to be parting with this nostalgic, time-capsule of a city. Santa Fe is how I remembered it; a friendly place where locals and tourists alike mingle and enjoy one another’s company, and where good conversation is surpassed only by the food and drink. To me, there’s a familiar feel to Santa Fe. Its ambiance is laid-back, intelligent and artistic. The city is full of history, with stories ready to be shared … after a few margaritas of course.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith is an Otherworldly Car Article Tom Strongman
W
raith. The word conjures up images of a “visible spirit” and a “haunting experience,” and haunting experience is an apt way to describe driving the twin-turbo, 624-horsepower V-12 Rolls-Royce Wraith coupe. It accelerates to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph. One might say that for a starting price north of a quarter-of-amillion dollars the car should be astounding, and that’s true, but it’s Rolls-Royce’s approach to build fine motorcars by hand and using up-to-the-minute technology that make this car a paragon of performance and luxury. Rolls-Royce invited auto writers to sample its newest model, and I spent about two hours driving on the roads in and around Phoenix. Waftability. What a wonderful word. No other automaker brags of having “waftability,” or floating gently, yet that is a trait Rolls-Royce prizes, and it has been since the 1907 was named the Silver Ghost for its uncanny quietness. The Wraith moves as though it were levitating. The twin-turbo’s 590 pound-feet of torque is available from 1,500 to 5,500 rpm so the slightest touch of the throttle moves the car’s two and a half tons like a giant, un22 Newport Beach Lifestyle | January 2014
seen hand. The engine makes almost no sound at idle, and there is virtually no vibration. It used to be said that the loudest sound you heard in a RollsRoyce was the ticking of the clock, but in the case of the Wraith, it was my own periodic gasp as I experienced the car’s phenomenal performance. Acceleration was strong, like a 747 on takeoff, and on the interstate I was startled at how 90 miles an hour felt like 55 or 60. The adaptive cruise control is almost mandatory to stay within the speed limit. Cruising cross-country in a Wraith would be like having a personal jet. A satellite-aided, eight-speed automatic transmission uses GPS coordinates so it knows where the car is and where it is going, and it selects the appropriate gear for the location. If you’re approaching a hill, or exiting a corner, the car knows it in advance and chooses the right gear. It’s as if you have a silent butler saying, “I’ve selected the proper gear for you, sir. Proceed.” Waftability indeed. In 1998, BMW bought the rights to the Rolls-Royce name and logo, which was held by the Rolls-Royce airplane engine maker. BMW built a new plant for hand-assembling cars and its first de-
sign was the 2003 Phantom flagship. The slightly smaller Ghost was introduced in 2010. Although the Wraith is nearly two feet shorter than the Phantom, the 122.5-inch wheelbase is longer than that of a minivan. It is five inches shorter and more than one inch lower than the Ghost, which is 212.6 inches long. In many ways, the Wraith is the modern incarnation of the spirit of Charles Rolls, a daredevil and wild man obsessed with speed and adventure who was the first Briton to die in a plane crash when the tail of his Wright flyer broke in 1910. Rolls had teamed with Henry Royce to found the Rolls-Royce Company, and their early cars were legendary for their performance in events such as the Austrian Alpine Trial and the Scottish Reliability Trial. The Wraith’s interior is total luxury. You close the large, rear-opening doors by holding a button. Chrome is abundant, as is beautiful wood trim. The door panels are a huge slab of Canadel paneling, but ash, oak, walnut and other more exotic woods are optional. An intriguing $12,925 option is the Starlight headliner. A total of 1,340 tiny LED lamps are woven into the headliner material so it resembles the stars in the night sky when lit. Rolls-Royce prides itself on treating customers with the utmost care, and to that end, a buyer can have the car tailored to suit his or her personal needs by working directly with the designers to select the type and color of leather, wood and paint. Special requests will be accommodated if humanely possible. Examples they have received are requests for built-in, heated and cooled Thermos bottles, built-in walking sticks, special tartan plaid trunk lining or teak picnic sets with custom-made crystal. Rolls-Royce executes these special items with the same care and detailing as the rest of the car, be it matching the leather, stitch patterns or inlaid wood. Price The base price of the Wraith is $284,900. Options includ-
ed a fixed glass roof, Canadel wood paneling, Bespoke 1,300-watt audio system, RR monogram on headrests, stainless steel doorsill plates, lambswool mats, color-matched trunk trim, comfort entry
system, night vision, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane departure system, camera system, destination and gas-guzzler tax. The sticker price was $359,150. Warranty Four year, unlimited mileage warranty. All service and
maintenance is provided for four years regardless of mileage. You can reach Tom Strongman at Tom@TomStrongman.com.

New Year’s Resolutions Who Says They Can’t Be Achieved?
Article Jana Castanon
C
ome on, we all do it. We will make a New Year’s resolution to get in shape, make more time for ourselves, save more money… you get the picture. Our intentions are good, it’s the follow thru that we have a hard time with. So change it up this year. Don’t look at your resolutions as an all or nothing proposition. Break them down to baby steps. Think of things you can do today that will ultimately get you to your goal. At the top of many New Year’s resolutions there is one that deals with finances; saving more, paying down debt and improving your credit score are some examples. Again, create a plan to start making changes to the little stuff that will help you build the foundation and allow you to reach your goals. Here are some suggestions.
be saving by switching insurers. Most insurance companies offer discounts for multiple policies (car, home, etc.). If this applies for you, make sure you are getting that discount and use it as leverage in negotiating with your current provider. Check on Your Retirement Plan - If you have a company-spon-

sored 401(k) plan, make sure you’re enrolled and contributing enough to get the full company match. Consider increasing your deposit to this account by one percent; you will be surprised how little this would affect your paycheck but could make a significant difference when you retire. Life With My Little Girl What a doll Article by Paul Sterman
J
ulie and Rebecca and Heidi and Ivy. Four female action figures? An all-girl rock band? No, these are dolls. American Girl dolls, to be exact. And they belong to my 6-year-old daughter, Hannah. She plays with these girls constantly, doting over them like a mother hen. She dresses them, talks to them, has them talk to each other. She tucks them in, sleeps with them, takes them on our trips. Which means I play with them too. Um, let me clarify: I play with them with Hannah. Because that’s what parents do. You take an interest in what your child is interested in. And right now, my daughter is all about the dolls. To participate in playtime with your 6-year-old is to witness the rich imaginary life of a child. Kids create amazing worlds of drama in their rooms. Besides setting up various doll scenes, Hannah and I play school, we play clothing store---it’s never too early for your child to start honing those entrepreneurial skills---we even play hair and nail salon. (Until my budding little manicurist got hold of me, I never knew how fabulous I looked with pink nail polish.) Then there’s the timeless classic “Baby and Mommy”---a true test of my acting skills. I’m the baby, and, at the request of my daughter, usually a bawling one. This is where I discover just how much Hannah absorbs the words that adults utter—namely, the phrases used by her own mommy. Me: “Mommy, I’m sad. I miss you.” Hannah: “Oh, baby, it’s OK. Mommy’s here. Come here, sweetie---do you need a hug?” Mimic much? Getting back to the subject of dolls---and those are words I never thought I’d be writing---Hannah’s taste has evolved through the years. She started with Little People (mommies, daddies, grandparents, Jewish families, Asian-American families, Native Amer28 Newport Beach Lifestyle | January 2014
icans—diversity is big in the Little People universe), then graduated to a gallery of Disney princesses (Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, Tiana, Pocahontas), then moved inevitably to that icon of doll play: Barbie. Just how elaborate are Barbie’s accompaniments? The other day, to bribe—um, incentivize—my daughter to go to sleep earlier, I took her to Target to pick out a toy. She selected a Barbie vending machine that dispenses miniature purses, shoes and jewelry. Even so, Barbie can’t compete with American Girl figures, in Hannah’s eyes. For those in the know, these dolls come with history-steeped backgrounds and hefty price tags. (Thank goodness for generous grandparents.) At night, when I’m wiped from a day at work, I lie on the bed reading my newspaper; Hannah lies beside me leafing through the latest American Girl catalogue. “Dad, look at these roller skates for Julie! They’re only 18 dollars. Please can I get it?” “I don’t know. Put it on your birthday wish list.” “What about these Julie pajamas?” “Just add it to the list.” “But I—” “The list. Put it on the list.” For her 6th birthday, I scored big with Hannah. She and I made a pilgrimage to the mecca: the American Girl store in Los Angeles. Step inside and you see the ultimate doll palace, not only stuffed to the ceiling with every American Girl imaginable but packed with items ranging from doll furniture to doll hair products. Hannah had already mapped out her items of choice the night before—we set a hoped-for price limit—and she went home as happy as can be with her new bounty. That night, she came to me and said, “Daddy, that was the best birthday present ever!” There it was. The words that make it all worth it. What a doll.

it would be unlikely for a liposuction alone to Health and beauty. elasticity, improve the inner arm skin laxity. Fortunately, we now Dr. Bunkis is a Harvard Trained Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Newport Beach. With the start of the New Year, getting fit is on the minds of many people. Dr. Bunkis will answer a question with before and after photos from actual patients. JURIS BUNKIS, M.D., F.AC.S.
“I hate my inner arms. I am 56 years old, have never been fat, I eat well and exercise almost every day. My muscles are strong but the skin of my inner arms jiggles when I move my arm and my arms look gross. I saw a plastic surgeon who tried to talk me into having inner arm skin excised and showed me some photographs. I could not believe the scar! A friend of mine had her inner arms liposuctioned but her arm skin still jiggles. Are there any other alternatives?”
—J.L., Corona Del Mar
have an alternative for the “in between” patients who are too lax for a liposuction alone but not bad enough to warrant the long and visible scar along the inner arm. Our new option is a radiofrequency treatment in which, after a liposuction, through the same tiny stab wounds, a radiofrequency probe with a temperature sensor near the tip is inserted into the layer just beneath the skin and the skin heated to 60 degrees Celsius, a temperature that scientists have found will cause significant skin shrinkage without causing surface burns. Orange County Plastic Surgery was the first medical practice in Orange County to acquire this unique new technology in 2012, the hottest new radiofrequency procedure now available. Dr. Juris Bunkis has developed an extensive experience with this technology and has been asked by the manufacturer, ThermiAesthetics®, to be on the company’s Clinical Advisory Board and to serve as a teacher to other physicians wishing to use this technology. This minimally invasive procedure works well for inner arms, necks, abdomens and thighs. Patients who have a significant excessive amount of skin excess will still be better served with a facelift, tummy tuck, arm or thigh lift or other traditional procedure. But this procedure is ideal for any patient who is not bad enough for the aforementioned procedures but wishes a tighter neck, tighter inner arm, less folds above the bra or in front of the axilla, less abdominal or back folds, with cellulite, or inner thigh laxity, not severe enough to warrant a skin excision. If you have any specific questions about cosmetic procedures, your best bet would be to see a qualified plastic surgeon to review your options. Please feel free to contact our office at 949-888-9700 to schedule a consultation. You may also visit our web site at www.orangecountyplasticsurgery.com to see further examples of similar patients.
Before and after photo of Inner Arm ThermiAesthetic® procedure in a fit, thin, 67 year old female, certainly not with enough skin laxity to warrant a brachioplasty. Actual OCPS patient. Results may vary.
We would have to see you in person to let you know what options would be best suited to your situation. Treatments do range from a simple liposuction procedure to an excision of inner arm skin. Inner arm skin excision is called a brachioplasty and is an excellent procedure for patients who have a massive skin excess following weight loss. But you are correct in saying that the resultant scar extends from the arm pit to the elbow, will usually spread and be noticeable, and is not appropriate for most patients who are not in the massive weight loss category. In someone who has lost a hundred pounds and began with a lot of excess skin, the scar is an acceptable trade off to having the extra skin. Liposuction is another alternative but is most effective in younger patients who do have a mild fatty excess, no skin excess, and still have good skin tone. But if your friend is similar to you in age, with some loss of skin

How Will You Make a Difference This Year? Words Lisa Cooke Harrison
I
f you’re reading this publication, it’s likely that you and I have several things in common. We don’t have to worry about where we’ll get our next meal. Our basic needs are being met and we’ll go to bed in a warm, safe and comfortable home tonight. What a wonderful blessing! I continue to wonder if I’ve done enough to teach my two boys about how blessed they are. How the years of hard work, careful planning and wise decision-making by two parents has not always been easy, but it is why they live the way they do and have what they have. Do they understand to whom much is given, much is to be expected? That they need to look for opportunities to give back? What about you? As the New Year begins, have you taken time recently to reassess how you’ll make a difference in the world around you this year? As an individual, and even as a family? The very best way to teach our children and grandchildren about being charitable is to lead by example. Don’t just write a check and put it in an envelope or fill a bag with cast-offs and set it out on the front porch to be collected. Instead, show your children, grandchildren, friends and family what’s important to you by rolling up your sleeves and volunteering on a regular basis. If you don’t want to do it alone, invite a friend or neighbor to join you. With volunteerism, the more the merrier is an absolute given! Most school-aged children can earn impressive service awards by volunteering a certain number of hours in a year. Encourage your children or grandchildren to choose one charity and focus
34 Newport Beach Lifestyle | January 2014
their attention on it for many years. They’ll have the opportunity to build relationships and learn more about how the organization works if they visit more than just a time or two. They’ll find out what the organization really needs and may set out to complete a project to help meet that need. Before you know it, they’ll learn how to really make a difference. Pick an organization that touches your heart. Are you passionate about children or babies? Literacy initiatives? Animals or veterans? Finding a cure for a specific disease? Your volunteerism will mean more if the mission of the organization is one you believe in wholeheartedly. Before you give your support, please do the responsible thing and do your homework. There are too many organizations out there raising money and claiming to do good, when in fact they do very little to distribute the money and goods they collect. Celebrity-backed charities are a dime a dozen. Don’t assume that a famous face supporting or leading a charity means it is more legitimate than others. Ask a few questions about the percentage of money earned that goes to administrative costs and about how much has been given away in the past few years. You may find that it’s better to give directly to a national organization rather than a local, celebrity-backed offshoot that supposedly supports a national organization. You’ve got a year of giving ahead of you. Go out there and make a difference!
