Happy Mother’s Day

may 2014 publisher

P

oor Anna Jarvis! As we enjoy our Hallmark cards, boxes of Godiva chocolates, and long-stemmed roses this Mother’s Day, Anna will be rolling around in her grave shouting, “This is not what I intended!” In the late 1800s, Anna’s mother established a Mother’s Work Day to raise awareness of the poor health conditions in Appalachia. When she died, Anna swore at her grave that she would dedicate her life to establishing a national Mother’s Day. She quit her day job and started writing letters and schmoozing politicians. In 1908, she got a bill drafted in the Senate, but it was killed and sent back to committee. Eventually, President Woodrow Wilson came through with the votes and in 1914, an official Mother’s Day was established nationwide. At this point, you’d think Anna would be overjoyed. Mission accomplished. Not quite. She was appalled over the selling of flowers and greeting cards and protested that this was to be a day of sentiment, not commercialization. She filed a lawsuit to stop Mother’s Day, but she was unsuccessful. By then, I’m sure America’s moms were saying, “You’ve done good, girl. Now scamper home and let us put our feet up for one day a year.” Eventually, Anna Jarvis died blind, penniless and alone. Now how’s that for an uplifting piece of women’s history? Anna devoted her life to having motherhood celebrated, yet she was never able to experience being a mother. I have to admit, I wasn’t sold on the notion myself. I could never see myself as a young mother. I had too much to accomplish in my youth. For me, education and travel were at the forefront. However, I always knew that I would become a mother at some point. Naturally, nobody told me about the realities of motherhood. I was blissfully ignorant. I envisioned skipping through a field of daisies with my children, with everything in slow motion and perfect. Fast forward several years—sleep-deprived, and wheeling my son through Target. He decided in a split second that throwing a tantrum and hurling himself to the floor was a grand idea. Reality bites. Yet astonishingly, both of my boys, now 13 and 10, truly make me feel special every Mother’s Day. Last year it was homemade cards, coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts in bed, and finally, the golden words, “It’s your day. We will do whatever you want ... can you help us make something to eat?” So dear Anna, please don’t fret. To honor your wishes this year, I will insist on no cards or presents on Mother’s Day. Instead, I would like a day with no cooking, no cleaning, no laundry, no grocery shopping, no driving to sports activities and no bill paying. In my book, time spent together is the true meaning of Mother’s Day. Not that there’d be anything wrong with a spa gift certificate and a mani-pedi!

PLAY BALL! You may have seen news trucks in the neighborhood a few months ago – that’s because Newport Beach Little League was on suspension. Less than a week after celebrating a very successful opening day, about 700 players in the Newport Beach Little League (NBLL) suddenly found their season in limbo. Thankfully, the suspension was lifted and though disappointed the season had to be interrupted, the local little leaguers are now back to playing ball. The circumstances of the suspension centered around questions of compliance with the national organization’s rules and regulations regarding how the local board should be comprised. NBLL President Gary Borquez notified parents that the league had been suspended indefinitely for reportedly not complying with rules and regulations of Little League Baseball. Borquez stated in an interview the governing bodies had not specified what those rules are, though it did state the league had too many managers on the board of directors; and that he had received no advance notice. District 55 Administrator Tamara Alexander, who oversees leagues in the area, sent an email to Dave Bonham, the interim director of the Little League Western Region Headquarters, asking for a suspension of NBLL. In the email, Alexander had written, “As you will additionally see, I have exhausted extensive time in trying to get the president to take control of this situation, but my efforts have been futile, which I believe are directly related to the manager/ coach ratio on the board of directors who are determined to customize the league’s program to their own liking and not consider the best interest of the players in the program.” In response to the situation, the league held a board meeting where five managers and coaches resigned from the board in an effort to bring it into compliance.

about tsunami preparedness, according to a press release from the city of Seal Beach. To be considered a Tsunami-ready community, the government requires a variety of criteria be met: • Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center. • Have more than one way to receive tsunami warnings and alert the public. • Promote public readiness through community education and distribution of information. • Develop a formal tsunami plan, which includes holding emergency exercises. • Comply with Tsunami Ready guidelines.

Obama’s decision to speak at the June 14 ceremony at Angel Stadium figures to boost UCI’s name recognition nationally just as the school celebrates its 50th anniversary.

To Cleanse or Not To Cleanse Demystifying cleansing and the gluten-free lifestyle Article Risa Groux, CN Holistic Nutritionist

I first started cleansing 10 years ago as a catalyst to losing weight. I did an entire food cleanse and lost six pounds without starving to death. I liked how I felt, so I tried other cleanses on the market, including a few sold through health practitioners. I literally passed out on the “Master Cleanse,” which allowed only water with lemons, maple syrup and cayenne pepper throughout the day for 7-10 days. For a week, I imbibed drudge-like liquids and supplements paired with daily colonics. I also tried store-bought cleanses, which were equally ineffective. The raw-juice cleanses left me cold, shaky, dizzy and wanting to eat a house. After those, and several others, I went back to the whole-food cleanse that made me feel so good. I continue that ritual twice a year. History shows cultures and religions around the world practice some form of annual cleansing. So, how do you know which cleanse is right for you? The entire point of cleansing is to clean, detoxify and purify the body, and rid it of the toxins it accumulates. Toxins are absorbed from a wide range of sources; they are found in many of the foods we eat, particularly in processed foods that have additives, dyes and preservatives. Toxins can also be found in foods that are not organic. Believe it or not, the cosmetics we use are also big contributors of toxins. Think about the nail polish you paint on your raw nail beds; chemicals seep in through those nail beds. Parabens, dyes, fragrances and other chemicals are usually found in most shampoos, conditioners, hair products, lotions and sunscreens. The deodorant you rub directly onto your skin may contain aluminum, parabens, dyes and fragrances, and these are absorbed through your pores. And let’s not forget about the air we all breathe, second-hand smoke, car exhaust, bug spray, dry-cleaning chemicals, and the plastic bottles and containers we eat and drink from daily, just to name a few. So where do these toxins go? Toxins are stored in the fat cells in our body. When we cleanse effectively, we lose fat cells and eliminate toxins. Toxins are processed in the liver, which can become sluggish when working overtime. If not addressed, myriad health issues can arise. The more toxins our bodies accumulate, the more difficult it is for the liver to function optimally. The raw-juice cleanse is at its height of popularity. It’s readily available at your local juice bar or health-food store, or even at Costco—but is it really good for you? I prefer to call raw-juice cleanses “juice fasts,” as they contain absolutely no fiber to clean anything out. In my opinion, this defeats the purpose of cleansing. Raw-juice cleanses restrict calorie intake and contain a lot of natural sugars, which can dangerously spike blood-sugar levels. I would not recommend it for diabetics or hypoglycemics. However, they do give the digestive tract a break, which can be effective for a couple of days, but fiber is critical for proper digestion. Fiber is the indigestible part of plant foods that pushes through our digestive system. It reduces cholesterol and regulates sugar intake. Most juices contain beneficial nutrients if consumed within hours of extraction. The efficacy of enzymes minimizes within a few hours and the potential for bacterial growth of organisms increases. continued >

ger foods that start us on a downward spiral. Because a whole-food cleanse is satiating, there is no feeling of depravation. I have seen clients start a cleanse with little intention to complete the process, but in actuality once they make it through 21 days, they make permanent lifestyle choices they never dreamed of, which leads to a leaner, healthier body. Another benefit of a whole-food cleanse is how it brings us out of our unconscious eating habits and forces us to eat consciously. So many people eat food unconsciously. Often times, we eat when we are not hungry, just because food is there. Cleansing can be like hitting a reset button on your internal system. Our bodies are really not much different than other things we value in life. We need to nourish, repair and maintain our bodies for a lifetime to keep them functioning optimally. Cleansing can certainly be an excellent way to accomplish this. I believe that purging toxins and replenishing the body with high-quality nutrients can greatly decrease the effects of wear and tear and keep disease at arm’s length. After many years of me nagging, my husband finally joined me on a 21-day cleanse last winter. He not only lost 15 pounds but he felt so good he went back on another cleanse just one month later. He swore it helped his golf game.

GLUTEN FREE

People routinely ask me, “Is cleansing good? What are the benefits of cleansing? Can I cleanse at any age?” In my professional opinion, I strongly believe that a whole-food cleanse with protein shakes and fresh, organic whole foods can have an amazing impact on the overall health of most people. From teenagers to people well into their eighties, cleansing can be highly beneficial. It is not uncommon for people who have eaten poorly for years to see a reversal of ailments while cleansing. Many women stop experiencing hot flashes or night sweats throughout and after a whole-food cleanse. The most common benefits my clients report after a whole-food cleansing are the elimination of sugar cravings, brain fog, PMS and inflammation. They report increased energy, better sleep quality, clearer skin, bowel regularity and, of course, weight loss. Cleansing one or two times a year can greatly enhance the health and well-being of most people, but it’s not for everyone. If you take certain medications or have health limitations, it may not be right for you. About 95 percent of nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine. If the small intestine is inflamed or blocked, it will hinder the absorption of essential nutrients that are provided by the food we eat. Therefore, it is not uncommon for a person to be malnourished, even while eating a healthy and nutritious diet. It’s like putting change in your pocket. You can do it all day long but if there is a hole on your pocket, you will not getting any richer. Cleansing can be instrumental in reducing intestinal inflammation or clearing blockages. It’s common knowledge that as we age it’s harder to lose weight. A whole-food cleanse does not only expedite weight loss, it also kick-starts our motivation while removing our urge to eat the trig16 Newport Beach Lifestyle | May 2014

Gluten-free is rapidly becoming a growing topic of conversation as well as a growing market for food manufacturers. Many people feel that going gluten free can effectively cause weight loss. This can be true, as long as the gluten items in the diet are not being substituted by processed foods. Gluten is the protein found in grains like wheat, including semolina, durum, spelt, farro and bulgur. It is also found in barley, rye and most oats. For people with Celiac disease, a gluten-free diet is critical. Celiac disease occurs when gluten causes inflammation in the small intestine. It can result in debilitating illness, but in reality, a very small percentage of the population suffers from it. But going gluten-free is also highly recommended for people who suffer from autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease. As for the main stream, why all the fuss about gluten? Each passing year, Americans consume more gluten-rich foods than ever before. Some people are gluten sensitive, and eating gluten causes them bloating, diarrhea and abdominal pain. In general, foods that contain gluten are processed. This causes inflammation within the body, and leads to a general breakdown of health. It also contributes to weight gain. Here’s the bottom line: Eat gluten-containing foods—pasta, breads, cakes, cookies, cereals and fried foods—in moderation. I don’t believe going gluten-free is essential for everyone, but it wouldn’t hurt if one made a conscious effort to decrease, or eventually remove, gluten from one’s diet altogether.

Article Paul Sterman

hen you think of Newport Beach, so many things come to mind. Newport Harbor. Fashion Island. Chocolate-dipped frozen bananas. John Wayne. My own vivid memories of the city started in childhood. I grew up in Tustin, and it was always a treat when my parents drove me and my two sisters down to Newport Beach. We celebrated birthday dinners at the Reuben E. Lee—the famed floating restaurant—and enjoyed summer-evening strolls on the Balboa Island boardwalk. But the biggest thrill for us kids was rolling onto the Balboa Island Ferry in the family car, and heading across the harbor to the Balboa

Fun Zone. We played skeeball in the arcade, navigated the festive crowds, devoured Balboa Bars, and returned home tired and happy. This city boasts dazzling ocean views and a dizzying array of recreation attractions. It’s a blend of coastal glamour and good old-fashioned family fun. Carolyn Clark is one of many people who knows this well. She runs Newport at Your Feet, offering private, customized tours of Newport Beach. “The city is enthralling,” she says. Even when she’s guiding high-powered corporate groups, it’s often the simple pleasures of the city that delight them most. “Once they experience the ferry ride and the Fun Zone, it’s almost like they become kids again.”

colorful history When it comes to the history of this famous city, it’s hard to know where to start. But how about here: 1906. That’s when Newport Beach officially became a city. Ten years later, Balboa Island became part of the city. And 20 years after that, Newport Harbor was dedicated. The harbor is a story in itself. It has always been a centerpiece of the city. Many of Newport Beach’s earliest residents were commercial fishermen, and the harbor served primarily as a shipping port during the city’s fledgling years. Later, shipyards and boatyards were a common sight in the city. Now it is pleasure craft that fill the waters. Newport Harbor is one of the largest small-boat harbors in the world, with more than 9,000 boats. There are sailboats, fishing boats and the ever-popular Duffy electric boats. The harbor is also teeming with traditions. Sailing regattas are held every year, and the internationally renowned Newport-to-Ensanada Yacht Race has been around since 1948. Another hallowed custom: the annual Christmas and Independence Day boat parades, pageantry-filled events that attract droves of participants and huge crowds of spectators. Back to the early years. The evolution of Newport Beach in the first few decades of the 20th century brought bathing beauties, boat races, fancy homes … and celebrities. Hollywood stars, such as Errol Flynn, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and June Allyson, flocked to the coastal getaway. Shirley Temple was a frequent summer visitor with her family, and the little film star was crowned the first Miss Newport Beach at age 13. Many more celebs came in the ensuing years, from John Barrymore and Buddy Ebsen (who had a catamaran called “The Polynesian Concept”) to Nicholas Cage and Michelle Pfeiffer. After John Wayne bought a home in Newport Beach, he became a fixture in the city. His yacht “Wild Goose” was a familiar sight for years, and it can still be spotted on the bay waters, where it is now used for tours. The Balboa Bay Club’s harborfront bar is named Duke’s Place in homage to the iconic actor, who was once on the club’s board of governors.

maritime music The Balboa Pavilion, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places, was established in 1906. It soon emerged as a glittering symbol of seaside recreation, housing a bowling alley and art museum, and offering boat rentals, speedboat rides, sightseeing excursions and musical acts. Once the Big Band era exploded in the 1930s and ’40s, you could go to the Pavilion and see such classic acts as Count Basie, Benny

Goodman and Stan Kenton. With music came dancing. This is where the fabled dance step called “The Balboa” originated, and it proceeded to sweep the country. And there is more. So much more. Newport Beach is home to the protected Back Bay, a unique and expansive coastal wetland. There’s also Crystal Cove State Park, with its pristine beaches, horseback riding and Historic District cottages. The city is lined with multi-million-dollar homes and top-end hotels. Lucrative commercial areas and picturesque parks. Oceanfront piers and surfing at the Wedge.

that have been around for many decades. One of those people is Shirley Pepys, whose home is among the most venerable: It turned 100 last December. (The first houses on the island sprang up in 1906.) Pepys is the creative director of the Balboa Island Museum and Historical Society. Located on Marine Avenue, the museum’s aim is to preserve the area’s heritage through photos, stories, notes, letters and other artifacts. The items mark the memories of people who have lived in the tight-knit community, with those distinctive houses and downtown mix of charming shops, restaurants and boutiques. “It’s amazing,” Pepys says of the local history. “And the Balboa Island Museum is not just about the people of Balboa Island—it’s about people all over the area.” One particularly ambitious project that museum volunteers are working on is documenting the history of all the island’s homes—

about 1,400. Curator Tina Wayt has photographed each and every home on the island. As Pepys notes, many of the homes belong to third-generation families; current residents inherited their home from their parents, who inherited it from their parents. “The stories that the grandparents have to tell are wonderful,” she says. “There’s such a love for the island.” Museum volunteers want to hear from as many people as possible, so they can keep gathering stories. “The more people we meet, the more stories we get,” says Pepys. Clark, the local tour guide, says she loves showing people the wonders of Newport Beach, including the glittering ocean views, 20 Newport Beach Lifestyle | May 2014

the waterfront activities, the shopping, the walking paths, and more. The longtime city resident has been giving tours for 10 years. “No one has ever been disappointed in discovering this amazing place,” she says.

pop- culture hotspot Not surprisingly, Newport Beach has always drawn film crews. Movies ranging from the original Cleopatra and All Quiet on the Western Front to Beaches and Jerry Maguire were shot here. The Newport Beach Film Festival is one of the city’s most prominent attractions. Now in its 15th year, the annual festival screens more than 350 films from 50 different countries. More than 50,000 people attend the eight-day event. Then there are the TV shows. Who can forget “The O.C.,” the smash-hit series that centered on teen angst among a circle of young people living and partying in Newport Beach. Whatever you may have thought of the show’s quality or its portrait of Newport Beach residents, there’s no denying the program was a boon to tourism. During “The O.C.’s” peak popularity about 10 years ago, scores of people would call the Newport Beach Conference & Visitors Bureau to ask about seeing the places referenced on the show. In response to all the interest, the visitors bureau (now called Visit Newport Beach) handed out a tourist map of various sites mentioned on the program, from the Balboa Pavilion to The Arches restaurant. The TV show “Arrested Development” focused on the comical adventures of the fictional Bluth family in Newport Beach. (Their frozen-banana stand even popped up at the 20th annual Balboa Island Parade, held last year.) milestones and memories In 2006, the city marked its centennial celebration. Writing about the event at that time, I interviewed people such as Newport Beach resident Wing Lam, who with his brothers Ed and Mingo co-founded the Wahoo’s Fish Taco eateries. He grew up in Newport Beach after his parents moved the family there from Brazil in 1972. Lam recalled riding on the Balboa Island Ferry, surfing at the Newport Beach river jetties and roaming the Fun Zone. “We were out in the sun all day,” says Lam, whose Wahoo’s restaurants reflect his love of surfing and beach life. This year Newport Beach turned 108. It’s still a blend of glorious scenery and waterfront treasures. In fact, it’s safe to say there is no other city quite like it.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam Escape the Western World

Article and Photography Colin Roohan

22 Newport Beach Lifestyle | May 2014

I

feel cut off from the Western world. There isn’t a fast food restaurant in sight, a barber is cutting a man’s hair out on the pavement under the blazing sun, and the shouts from the kids playing in the nearby harbor proclaim their love of life. Lost in it all, I snap back to coherence. I notice a set of eyes peering up at me from underneath a conical hat; the neighboring lips offer a greeting of “Xin Chao!” I’m in Duong Dong, a village on the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc. It’s a destination which may have developed more rapidly if it were attached to the mainland, but it isn’t, and for that I am grateful. The pace of life on Phu Quoc is blissfully slow, something which is increasingly harder to find on mainland Vietnam. The distance between Phu Quoc and the Vietnamese mainland is a mere 12 kilometers, but, remarkably, Phu Quoc has retained its original Vietnamese charm that has been attracting tourists, both foreign and local, for a long time. My journey started after I grabbed my pack and departed the tiny plane that brought me to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City. My feet hit the tarmac, and I was inside and through customs in record time. The rickshaw drivers waiting outside the airport were laid-back, preferring me to approach them for a ride, which is always a rare surprise. As I sat in the auto rickshaw headed down the coast, the setting sun and cool sea-breeze made a stellar first impression. We turned off the main road into a series of

earthen-clay makeshift alleys, dodging farmers who could be in the circus judging by the way they balanced their heaps of green on their shoulders. The driver slowed and eventually came to a halt. He helped me unload my bag and motioned with his hand toward the entrance of a guesthouse adorned with lavish vines and a quaint, manicured garden. I was lured in by the sweet smell of banana blossoms and flowered creepers, and by the end of the night I found myself sipping a beer on the beach while gusts of wind rustled palm leaves overhead. My infatuation with this island was growing. The next day I awoke to find light showers quenching the local flora, but the guesthouse staff assured the sky would clear by mid-morning; the promise of sunshine was a godsend as activities are abundant on Phu Quoc. Unfortunately, the layout of the island isn’t exactly walk-friendly (with the exception of the Duong Dong Township). I rented a motorbike and took a coastal drive to the secluded southern point of the island. Stops of interest along the way included small, secluded beaches and a pearl farm with its own resident cucumber-eating macaque. Cows lounged lazily under the cover of palm trees, slowly chewing their cud. The ultimate highlight of that part of the island is Bai Sao (South Beach), a perfect white sand beach. Bliss-filled hours of laying on the warm sand were only interrupted by my search for cold beer and the delicious seafood pho the local restaurants served (and by restaurants I mean tents with charming continued >

women running a grill out back). The crystal-clear water allows for some great snorkeling and diving, and typically several boats line the shore ready to take passengers out to the nearby An Thoi Islands. As pleasant as Bai Sao is, the heat can get pretty extreme, so I wouldn’t recommend staying a full day. Respite from the equatorial sun can be found at the Dan Ban Waterfall located in the central part of the island. The labeling of this stream (albeit with a few cascades) as a waterfall is misleading, but the spring water flowing there is cool and fresh. It will shake off any heat-induced stupor Bai Sao may cause. I made the trek in flip-flops, and became the source of entertainment for many of the Vietnamese vendors who sell their souvenirs at the site. They cackled, and they teased, but I overcame the slippery granite without a fall, and took as a reward a dip in an ice-cold spring, complete with a complimentary faux cardiac arrest. I headed back to my motorbike, goose bumps rising on my arms and legs. I pulled a map from my camera bag and planned my next stop on the island. There is a small township called Duong Dong on the southeastern part of Phu Quoc island. I had read it was very laid-back and an ideal location, one that allows you to capture the true essence of Phu Quoc. I pulled my motorbike onto the dirt road and drove through the dense jungle. The drive was lonely and quiet, except for an occasional stray dog scratching in the dirt next to the road. Eventually, the road turned to pavement, and a large group of shanties painted in bright pastel tones caught my eye. I could hear the sounds of children playing and smell grills being lit. The further I ventured into Duong Dong, the more captivating it became.

I parked my motorbike on the side of the road in a more populated area of town. I saw the signs for Duong Dong Market, which from a distance appeared to be lively and bustling, and just as the waterfall had excited me earlier, the sights and sounds of the market had the same effect. I crossed an old, wood footbridge, and the sight of myriad fishing boats resting in the nearby harbor overwhelmed me. I noticed a group of young boys swimming in the area, jovial and carefree. They noticed me taking pictures from above which sent them into a fit of laughter and unrestrained chaos. I continued into the market where outgoing vendors greeted me full of smiles. I stopped at an area with cages full of waterfowl. The display of previously butchered organs and white gelatinous blocks had my full attention. The merchants chuckled at my inquisitive stare and tried to explain what some of the items were, but the language barrier forced us into that all-familiar game of travel charades. By this time of day, swarms of shoppers brought the market to life and the constant flow of trade was enough to drain even the most resilient hagglers. The crowds, in combination with the heat (which at this point was an inferno), led me to look for a cold beverage. Inquiries were made, and I learned that a quaint café on the nearby esplanade could fulfill my wish. I found the café and ordered an iced Vietnamese coffee; you know the variety—thick as sludge, strong as well. I took my coffee up to a second-floor balcony which overlooked the harbor and sat in contemplation watching a group of children playing on the beach without a care in the world. Ultimately, my entire trip proved Phu Quoc’s appeal is more than surface deep.

Make a Splash With Family Pool Fun W

armer weather brings leisurely days spent poolside with friends and family. As you get ready to dive in to another season of fun in the sun, remember that safety comes first. With more than 10 million residential pools across America, the opportunities for water recreation right at home are plentiful. But so, too, are the chances of water-related mishaps. “Pools are a great source of enjoyment for families, and with proper supervision and care, the entire family can confidently dive in to hours of fun,” said Joe DeFuria, Brand Manager of BioGuard. “Taking time early in the season to brush up on this important information will help keep everyone safe all summer long.” The CDC cites “lack of swimming ability, lack of barriers to prevent unsupervised water access, lack of close supervision while swimming” as some of the leading risks associated with drowning. Preventive efforts such as learning to swim (or teaching swimming skills), ensuring at least one person with CPR training is present when the pool is in use and having proper safety devices (e.g., life vests and preservers) readily accessible help reduce injuries and accidents. Put these measures in place so you can enjoy the fun at hand, without the worry: 1. Designate a “lifeguard.” Always pick at least one responsible adult to monitor children at all times. 2. Know CPR: Before investing in a pool, be sure to take a CPR class. The faster CPR can be administered to a person in distress, the stronger the long-term outcome.

4. Enroll kids in swimming lessons: Teach the skill of swimming to children at a young age. Enroll kids in classes to learn the basics and avoid accidents. 5. Teach the parts of a pool: Show children where to locate the

drains, pipes and other pool openings. Explain the importance of avoiding these areas while swimming as they can cause harm. Pool Maintenance Essentials

Pool owners understand the importance of keeping it clean all season long. The experts at BioGuard provide these tips to keep your pool looking its best for family and guests: • Make waves. Constant water movement helps prevent bacteria and algae from growing and ensures that the pool sanitizer is evenly distributed throughout the entire pool. Circulating pool water during the day for at least 12 hours also helps the filter catch debris. • Test the waters. Every pool needs to be tested for the correct pH and sanitizer levels every week. Have a thorough water analysis performed by a professional every month. • Keep that water treatment going. The right water treatment plan will both maintain pool equipment and keep the water inviting. For instance, the SilkGuard Technology in BioGuard’s Silk sanitizer line makes pool water feel soft and smooth on skin while also preventing corrosion and protecting equipment. For additional pool care tips and to find a local BioGuard dealer,

3. Keep your water clean: Pool safety also includes keeping the water

clean and sanitary for your family. Invest in the proper tools, such as the pool care systems from BioGuard, to keep your waters crystal clear. 28 Newport Beach Lifestyle | May 2014

Se dat ion de n t i St ry What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses sedative medication to help patients relax and reduce stress during dental procedures. It is sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry.”

Dr. Peter T. Smrecek has been recognized by the

American Dental Society of Anesthesiology as a Master in the College of Sedation in Dentistry. The American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA) grants mastership in the College of Sedation in Dentistry to dentists who complete the American Dental Association requirements. These requirements include passing the ADSA conscious sedation examination, training in advanced cardiac life support and completing the required hours of continuing education in anesthesia and pain control each year.

Three Types of Sedation Are Used in Our Office: Nitrous Oxide. You breathe nitrous oxide, otherwise known as “laughing gas,” combined with oxygen through a mask that is placed over your nose. The gas helps you relax. Dr. Smrecek can control the amount of sedation you receive. This is the only form of sedation that allows you to drive yourself home after the procedure.

Oral Sedation. For minimal sedation, you take a pill. Typically, this medication is a member of the same drug family as Valium. It is taken about an hour before the procedure. The pill will make you drowsy, although you will still be awake at the beginning of the appointment. This type of anesthesia is most commonly associated with sedation dentistry. IV Sedation. You receive a sedative drug by an IV (in a vein). It goes to work very quickly and the level of

sedation is tailored to fit your needs for more predictable results. This method allows Dr. Smrecek to continually control the level of sedation.

Regardless of which type of sedation you receive, there is always a local anesthetic (numbing medication) at the site where Dr. Smrecek is working, to block pain and keep you as comfortable as possible. During sedation, Dr. Smrecek and his trained team are always with you monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and observing you closely throughout your sedation visit.

Parting Thoughts

All the Little Moments Words Lysa Christopher

A suburban mother’s role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car forever after. ~Peter De Vries

I

t finally struck me. Motherhood is like one really long comedy sketch, and we’re all waiting for the punch line. A great example is the everyday words we use that take on entirely new meaning once we become mothers. Simple words like: Dumbwaiter: One who asks if the kids would like dessert after dinner. Feedback: The inevitable result when your darling newborn doesn’t appreciate strained peas. Full Name: What you call your child when you’re mad at him. Grandparents: The people who think your children are perfect even though they’re convinced you’re raising them all wrong. Hearsay: What toddlers do when mommy blurts out a dirty word or when they overhear her gossiping on the phone. Puddle: A small body of water that draws other small bodies into it … just before you absolutely need to be somewhere. Show Off: A child who is more talented than your own. Sterilize: What we do with our first baby’s pacifier by boiling it, and to our last baby’s pacifier by blowing on it, wiping it on our shirt or putting it in our mouth.

Top Bunk: Where you should never put a child wearing super hero jammies. Two-Minute Warning: When a baby’s face turns red and they begin to make those familiar grunting noises. This usually happens while driving. Granted, there is no shortage of excitement with kids. When my son Ryan was just five, we went to the park. Unfortunately, one of his friends got really sick on the playground. Our conversation went something like this: “Mom? I figured something out.” “What’s that?” “When I was on the playground with Matt he threw up!” “I know, I saw what happened.” “When he barfed it made me want to barf too.” “That happens.” “Yeah, so a barf is just like a yawn because you can give one to someone else when you do it, like a present.” Ironically, all the sleepless nights, the stress we put on ourselves to ensure we raise our children right, and even the times we’re so frustrated we want to run from the house screaming, all passes too quickly. It’s all the little moments that add up to the most amazing journey a woman can take—motherhood. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
