Lifestyle Letter

Celebrate your home. I

n the kitchen of my childhood home, hanging right next to the stove, was a small porcelain plate with a picture of a neat white house on it. Above that house engraved in silver were the words “Home Is Where the Heart Is.” For some reason I always loved that little plate, and over the years it grew to be a comforting presence for me, always reminding me that here, in my home, I was protected from the world. I remember staring at it blurry-eyed on my first day of kindergarten, finding solace in the words after a bad day at school, and finally holding it in my shaking hands as I prepared to leave for college. Now that I have lived away from my childhood home for a while, I’ve had time to think about what really makes a house a home. For me, what makes it truly special is not the actual physical space, but the memories created within that space. Whether it be building pillow forts as a kid, staying up late with friends in a college dorm, furnishing your first apartment or bringing your own child back from the hospital, finding a place to call home is all about filling it with the people that matter most. And there is no better time to remember the importance of having a house filled with love, laughter and lasting memories than Thanksgiving. It’s a holiday dedicated to filling the kitchen with the warm aroma of roasting Turkey, catching up with family at the dining room table and cherishing all those rare, special moments spent with loved ones throughout the day.

The INFOCUS Founders Award honors individuals, businesses or organizations whose efforts have advanced the cause and improved public awareness of fine art photography in Arizona. Mr. Hajicek will accept the award at the organization’s annual PhotoBid Gala Art Auction held Friday, November 13, at Phoenix Art Museum. James Hajicek is a professor emeritus at Arizona State University (ASU), where he taught fine art photography for 34 years and directed programming in the specialized area of late 19th-century printing processes. For 17 of those 34 years, he also served as director of ASU’s Northlight Gallery, where he was responsible for building a significant collection of photographs dating back to 1840, so students could have hands-on experiences with prints from the history of photography. The World Race EXPERIENCING 11 COUNTRIES IN 11 MONTHS WHILE SERVING THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

C

hristian Shappee, 22, walked through the design studio at Arizona State University just months before graduation when a glimpse of his friend’s project grabbed his attention. She was designing posters for a friend who had joined the World Race. Shappee was unfamiliar with the program so she sat him down and showed him a video clip, not knowing that this small gesture would change the course of his life. “After watching it I got chills, watery eyes and went to my desk to look at the blogs. I was so moved that it felt like the spirit of God was talking to me right then. This came to me at a time I was feeling burnt out,” says Shappee. The World Race is a Christian mission trip where young people journey to 11 countries in 11 months to volunteer in communities worldwide and share their faith. The program calls them out of their comfort zone, gives them exposure to the world, and hopefully a new perspective of it. In January, Shappee will embark on this grand adventure and join the World Race. “I’ll spend 25 to 30 days in each country. Over the course of the year, I’ll live on three continents, come in contact with 11 unique and different cultures, and meet and support hundreds of people around our globe,” says Shappee. When he serves abroad he will teach English, help build homes and schools, install clean water resources, work with human trafficking victims and share the gospel. LIVING THE DREAM

“I would love to design for developing countries, and this is an opportunity to immerse myself in a country then pick-up and go on to another. There is something super refreshing and revitalizing about stepping out in a direction you didn’t plan. This was absolutely not my plan,” says Shappee. Shappee first learned about industrial design when he was a junior in high school. He 10

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2015

was so passionate about it that the dream inspired him throughout four years of college, where he studied sustainability and earned degrees in both industrial design and design management. But the moment he learned about the World Race, his dream shifted in another direction. “Moving to Los Angeles and getting my dream job seems like nothing now,” says Shappee. Although he admits that it would still be nice, he has now set his sights globally. “I grew up Christian and love my faith, but there were a lot of times when it was on the back burner. A lot happens in four years. There were semesters where I went to church and there were semesters where I didn’t. I was involved with some Christian organizations, but I never thought I was preparing for a life in ministry. I can totally see God intertwining both ministry and design into my future,” says Shappee. He didn’t sign up for the World Race right away. Like a good student, he did about two or three months of research, looking into many programs and mission trips. The one thing he knew for certain was that he wanted to learn more about the world so he could continue to foster change. Soon it became apparent that no matter how many great programs he found, he kept gravitating towards the World Race. PREPARATION

Shappee will soon trade his life in Scottsdale and relatively new job as a graphics and

marketing manager at Brilliance LED for a 75-liter backpack, a 25-liter daypack and a tent. “Steve, Patti and Bryan Gold, my bosses, have been supporting my trip beyond my wildest dreams. There is total support on every level,” says Shappee. After graduating last May he began looking for jobs, but had doubts that he would find something in his field because he had less than eight-months to offer a new employer. When he interviewed with Brilliance LED, he told the Gold's that he would need to leave in January, 2016 to begin his mission trip and they were supportive. The farthest Shappee has ever traveled outside of the country is Rocky Point, Mexico. While on the mission trip, he won’t have any income and will be completely relying on family and friends for support. He needs to raise nearly 17 thousand dollars to cover expenses such as food, lodging, travel and training. “It’s not in my nature to ask people for help. But the whole point of a mission trip is to bring other people with you,” says Shappee. “I'm ready to dive in, stop thinking about myself, and simply love and serve other people. I’m stoked beyond belief to see what God does through my upcoming journey.” Follow Shappee’s journey on his blog at ChristianShappee.TheWorldRace.org. Learn more about the World Race and see the video clip at WorldRace.org.

Autumn Ingredients CHEF BEAU MACMILLAN SERVES UP FALL FAVORITES WITH SEASONALLY-INSPIRED FARE ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

eau MacMillan, executive chef of elements restaurant at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort, loves the different seasons and unique ingredients that they bring. Autumn is his favorite, having grown up in Plymouth, Massachusetts — home of the original Thanksgiving. His hard work, dedication and creativity throughout the past 30 years have contributed to his current signature dishes, which use seasonal ingredients that enhance the flavor of the food without masking it. Since elements opened in 2001, MacMillan has been creating mouthwatering entrees. He originally started at the resort in 1998 and became executive chef in 2004. He received national recognition as an Iron Chef winner when matched against Iron Chef Bobby Flay in 2006, and has appeared on other Food Network programs as well. MacMillan graduated from Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island and worked with a number of prestigious East Coast chefs before moving to Arizona in 1998. At the age of 14, he worked as a busboy. That didn’t suit him too well so he asked to work in the back of the house, where he learned how to cook. As MacMillan passionately learned all he could, he earned the promotion to sous chef at distinguished restaurants where he learned different techniques while working with a number of prestigious chefs. His discipline has led him and elements to receive national recognition.

“I learned to stick with something until I mastered it; I took my time learning each technique before moving on to another,” states MacMillan. A CULINARY ADVENTURE

Dining at elements is truly a memorable experience. The dining room is open and comfortable with beautiful views of Paradise Valley during the day, at sunset and in the evening. Outdoor dining is available to capture the breeze and feel closer to nature. There’s also a wonderful menu with mouthwatering cuisine that is prepared fresh from local vendors. I started the evening sampling a few appetizers and they were delicious. CONTINUED >

INTRODUCING

Continental Mountain Estates

(CONTINUED)

I had the Brussels sprouts that are made with a thick slice of kimchi bacon, Brussels sprout hash and an organic egg on top. It tasted amazing. I then tried the artichoke tart, which was wonderful, and so were the rock shrimp and pork dumplings. I also sampled the Hudson Valley foie gras, which is a French delicacy meaning “fatty liver.” It was served with rhubarb on French toast. Unbelievably delicious. The heirloom tomatoes were flavorful and a favorite of mine, served with bacon, brioche and avocado. The beet salad was served with goat cheese, honey, arugula, fennel and hazelnut. Entrees consisted of the evening special, Grouper, which was perfectly cooked and extremely flavorful. The artful presentation of the food was very well crafted. Each course was like a gift that I unwrapped and enjoyed with each mouthful. MacMillan has the incredible ability to take a favorite, recognizable dish and put his own sweet and savory twist on it. He creates delicious meals that contribute to an enjoyable and memorable visit to this wonderful restaurant and resort. So add elements to your list of places to dine, not only for dinner, but also for breakfast and lunch during the week and brunch on Sunday. THE THANKSGIVING DAY FEAST

Each year, MacMillan and his catering team begin prepping for their annual Thanksgiving dinner three days in advance. He prepares 40 turkeys, as well as other items, including meats and seafood. The traditional turkey dinner usually includes his famous New England chestnut stuffing, Brussels sprouts, pumpkin cheddar bisque soup, mashed potatoes, apple cranberry relish and, of course, gravy. This year’s Thanksgiving Day menu will include a tantalizing selection of appetizers, salads, entrées and desserts. Appetizers may include caramelized fig and balsamic onion tart; escargot pot pie; roasted pumpkin and white cheddar bisque; and cauliflower panna cotta. A choice of entrees may include a traditional Turkey dinner, seafood options, veal, beef and vegetarian dishes. The grand finale will include an assortment of scrumptious desserts to choose from. A detailed Thanksgiving Day menu can be found on the resort’s website. As you celebrate Thanksgiving this year, MacMillan has some advice for every man who loves football. “Tape it!” He recommends you enjoy the day with your family and friends and participate in the cooking and the day’s festivities. He doesn’t want anyone to lose sight of what the holiday signifies by getting stressed out. “It shouldn’t feel like a chore, but a blessing with everyone pitching in,” shares MacMillan. “Yes, that’s how wonderful memories are made.”

DESIGNER LAUREN RAUTBORD SHARES HER SECRETS FOR CREATING ELEGANT INTERIORS

L

ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

auren Rautbord did not just choose to be a leader in the design world. She was raised for it from the very beginning. “My mother was always one of Chicago's most stylish and elegant women,” says Rautbord, co-founder of Paul Lauren Design Consultants. “From the time I was a little girl, I noticed all the little things she did to bring beauty to even the simplest things. Every table was dressed to perfection and all of our stuffed animals were positioned as if they were in conversation. She taught me how taste and refinement were not faddish, but classic and enduring.” While that special childhood fostered her love of the industry, it was time spent honing her skills at the renowned Harrington Institute of Interior Design where she was able to transform that passion into a career. Shortly after graduation she had the opportunity to work alongside Paul Marchetti, an already established and highly-regarded Chicago designer. The two quickly realized that they complimented each other well, and in 1995 the Chicago-based Paul Lauren Design Consultants was formed.

16

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2015

“A well executed design should look collected, not decorated,” explains Rautbord, describing her own theories of style and design. She shares that her personal style can range from minimalistic to multilayered, and is usually characterized by a graciousness and understated beauty that she attributes to her Midwestern influences. “I utilize clean lines and dramatic silhouettes but do so with an extremely neutral palette, without a lot of color or pattern to distract from the furnishings. The layering of fine fabrics, linen, cashmere, silk and leather creates a sophisticated, undecorated and more modern aesthetic. Restraint is key to keeping spaces uncluttered!” Though Lauren was able to help build Paul Lauren Design Consultants into a premier firm within the Chicago design arena, on a personal level, there was something that continually pulled her to the openness of the American West. Over the years she established a second home here in Arizona, but as time went on it became clear that her heart was pulling her to reside permanently in the Valley. After making the move in 2013, Lauren decided to hold off on opening a new office in the Phoenix area, instead focusing

on first building a client base so she could organically discover where might be the best location to offer the most convenience for her clients. She immediately noticed a core of her business stemming from Silverleaf, DC Ranch, and the various golf communities in the northeast metro area, so locating her office in North Scottsdale only made sense. In August of this year, Paul Lauren Design Consultants opened their new Arizona location just off of Bell Road, near the 101. In an effort to anticipate all of her clients’ needs throughout the course of a project, the space includes a large warehouse to help store furniture and other finishes on an interim basis, so clients don’t have to worry about the hassle of accepting deliveries or orchestrating offsite storage.

Lauren Rautbord is thankful that she has been able to craft a career that has allowed her to help people achieve their desire to make their home an expression of their individuality. Yet, with the abundance of resources and information available in magazines and across the internet, skeptics still constantly ask her why they should use a designer. “Our homes are our personal sanctuaries, and most people care very deeply about how they create their interior space,” says Rautbord. “My first job is to understand what the client really wants and needs out of the experience. My second job is to educate them on the realities and complexities of the marketplace and working with contractors. My third and most important job is to translate that into a customized experience and business relationship that will be fun, fair, rewarding and successful.” For more information on the company’s services, they can be reached directly at 480.664.6765, or by visiting their website at PaulLaurenDesigns.com. perfect welcoming with its bold hanging chandelier and intricate tile designs. Pass through this area into the home’s gourmet kitchen, which boasts premium grade appliances, granite countertops, an expansive island and panoramic views of the backyard. There’s also a cozy breakfast nook that’s perfect for enjoying an early morning cup of coffee or late brunch with the family. Just steps from the kitchen is the spacious family room, where high vaulted ceilings, crisp white walls and an expansive fireplace curate a feeling of palatial grandeur. The master bedroom recalls the same sentiment with its vaulted ceilings and crisp white finishes, along with views of the outdoors through large windows lining one side of the room. The master bath is fit for royalty with its large Jacuzzi-style tub and adjacent shower, a grand space framed by two Italian-inspired columns. There’s also a fabulous walk-in closet complete with its own organization system that’s perfect for storing everything with the upmost efficiency and style. As an added bonus, there is also an intimate two-room casita attached to the house with its own garage and courtyard access, providing just the right amount of privacy to guests.

ENTERTAINER’S DELIGHT

Descend into the home’s magnificent finished basement and find yet another living area and two full bedrooms. However, it’s the extra amenities that make this one-of-a-kind basement an ideal gathering place. Enter its exquisite 150-bottle capacity wine cellar and select a bottle of fine red or white to enjoy with family and friends while seated at the adjacent wet bar. Or curl up on a comfy armchair in the home’s theatre and enjoy a movie projected on the big screen. The party really starts outdoors in the home’s resort-style backyard. “The backyard was designed with the kids in mind,” says realtor Andrew Bloom. "It’s one of the largest lots in this subdivision and they chose it because they wanted the backyard to have all the toys and play areas for their kids so they can entertain." It certainly does not disappoint, providing a large grassy play area, a putting green, a large sunken trampoline and, of course, a fabulous pool with both waterfalls and a waterslide. There’s no shortage of entertainment options for the adults either, as the yard also has a built-in barbecue and a large outdoor seating area perfect for holding an evening soiree or enjoying a meal while watching the kids play in the pool. With its bright open spaces, top-notch amenities and abundance of entertaining features, this home definitely scores big.

NEWLY-REMODELED SCOTTSDALE PLAZA RESORT SAYS

Home for the Holidays ’ ‘

28

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2015

Perfect Spot for Out-of-Town Guests ARTICLE ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

B

elieve it or not, the holidays are just around the corner. Along with the inevitable reappearance of decorative Santas and Menorahs, Christmas trees and toys-a-plenty, chances are good at least one relative will appear at the door, ready for some yuletide cheer. While readying the guest room and entertaining Aunt Sally and Uncle Bob at your home is always an option, you could also start a new holiday tradition this year by encouraging your guests to stay at the newly-renovated Scottsdale Plaza Resort.

RESORT HISTORY

The Scottsdale Plaza Resort first opened nearly four decades ago, says Sheryl Bettencourt, director of marketing. The resort, which sits on 40 lovely landscaped acres in the shadow of Camelback Mountain, features 404 guest rooms, including 180 elegant suites. In addition to being the only independently owned and operated resort in the Valley, Bettencourt says some of the employees have worked there almost since the beginning. “Because of this we have so many long standing relationships with returning guests, and we go out of our way to treat everyone like one of the family,” she says. The Scottsdale Plaza Resort is an ideal place for holiday guests to stay, Bettencourt says, because the resort’s five categories of room styles means there is something for every family. This is especially true for the resort’s Suites—the Patio, Bi-Level and Villas all have wet bars, in-room refrigerators and separate living rooms, she says. Many even have beehive fireplaces to help add to the ambiance of a cozy winter retreat. “It’s a home away from home at holiday times,” she says. NEWLY RENOVATED

The recently-completed renovations focused on the standard category of rooms, Bettencourt says. They included replacing bathtubs with glass walled showers and putting in new flooring by Heritage Interiors throughout the vanity and shower areas. The rooms now feature new lighting, and the closet and vanity bathroom areas were both expanded to offer guests more square footage, Bettencourt says, along with updated plumbing fixtures by Kohler. The renovation also included adding desks by Living Spaces and new accent chairs for the rooms’

seating areas, as well as framed and lighted vanity mirrors by Electric Mirrors. The eye-catching granite on the wet bars and vanities is from Arizona Tile, Bettencourt says, and the brushed nickel hardware in the rooms was made by Ferguson. To add to the usable space of the rooms, televisions are now mounted on the walls, and the standard category rooms now feature in-room refrigerators. If guests are not part of the holiday game plan, The Scottsdale Plaza Resort is a great choice for Valley families who want to take a “staycation” during the hustle and bustle of the season. Instead of rushing back home after a long day of holiday shopping, local families can book a room at The Scottsdale Plaza Resort and enjoy relaxing together. Kids will be sure to get a kick out of the Turkish cotton robes, which are included in all guest rooms and suites, and will enjoy hanging out with mom and dad as everyone watches an in-room movie. FAMILY-FRIENDLY, FESTIVE

To help ring in the holiday season, Bettencourt says the resort is always extensively decorated with beautiful trees and plenty of festive décor, including lights and floral arrangements that will delight both kids and adults. “Floral Designs by Jeremiah has been creating our holiday décor for over 25 years,” she says. The resort also offers plenty of activities for local families and their visiting relatives to enjoy. Guests can use one of the resort’s five outdoor heated and sparkling pools as well as enjoy some serious pampering time at the on-site salon and day spa. For people who have enjoyed a bit too many holiday cookies and egg nog, the resort’s tennis courts, fitness center and putting green will give them the opportunity to burn off those extra calories while engaging in some good natured competition. Once everyone is hungry again, Bettencourt says, people can head over to Remington’s for a special holiday dinner. From its beautifully-appointed rooms, lovely views of Camelback and Mummy Mountains and amenities galore to its welcoming staff and gorgeous holiday decorations, The Scottsdale Plaza Resort offers a welcoming sanctuary from the busyness of the upcoming season. The Scottsdale Plaza Resort is located at 7200 N. Scottsdale Rd., in Scottsdale. For more information, visit ScottsdalePlaza.com.

A BESPOKE BOUTIQUE EXPERIENCE AT SHERRE’S ARTICLE ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

n 1974, Tom and Sherre Lucas opened Sherre’s in Lincoln Plaza. Over the years, the husband and wife duo have relocated their clothing boutique a few times, expanding it throughout the Scottsdale area and into Tucson. Mandy Krewson, Tom and Sherre’s middle child, began working at Sherre’s when she was 14. Now a buyer and owner, Krewson says she enjoys being part of a family-owned clothing company with such a long history, as well as helping women find the perfect outfit for all occasions. “We feature women’s contemporary clothing, and our customers range from high school age all the way up,” Krewson says. In addition to a wide selection of fashionable tops, pants and more, Krewson says Sherre’s also sells a variety of beautiful accessories, including scarves, handbags and jewelry. “I work with six or seven local jewelry designers who create beautiful pieces of art. I like to work with them and feature their different pieces, and customers like that most everything is one of a kind,” she says. Whenever possible, Krewson says, she tries to find clothing vendors in the United States. Right now, the vast majority of apparel sold at the boutique is made in the U.S. While styles definitely change over time, Krewson says the “casual ruggedy” look of ripped jeans paired with plaid flannel shirts is especially popular right now, as are classic and simple clothes in solid colors, like an emerald green blouse featuring beautiful lines.

32

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2015

No matter what people come in for—from a new outfit or jewelry for themselves to a gift for family members—Krewson says she and everyone else at Sherre’s truly enjoys getting to know their customers. The family-owned atmosphere also extends to their employees, many of whom have been with Sherre’s for years. “Our manager has been with us for 14 years, and most of our employees only leave us when they are moving away or retiring. We really have a strong family feeling here,” she says. To help show their appreciation to their customers, Krewson says Sherre’s holds raffles and giveaways on a regular basis, and rewards their patronage in other ways. “We give our customers a birthday gift card for $30 on their birthdays, and we also give 10 percent back on their purchase. So if a customer spends $100, she will get $10 back that she can use in the next 30 days,” Krewson says. While Krewson definitely enjoys spending time with customers and getting to know them, as well as working closely with her family, she also loves putting her passion for fashion to good use. “I love dressing people and then having them come back later and hearing ‘Oh, that was the perfect outfit for that event,’” Krewson says. “I want to help people look good, whether they have just lost weight or want to treat themselves to a new outfit. I know that clothes can make you look good, and when you look good, you feel good.” For more information visit ShopSherres.com.

Parting Thoughts

Home WORDS MOLLY WILLIAMS

C

hildhood homes are much more than our first stop on this earth. They are where we learn our names, take our first steps, come to love our family, and also who we are. My first home was a sturdy ranch in a now aging post-war subdivision. Although it seemed huge and completely familiar to me then, when I drive by it now, it looks like all the other tidy tracts of its era, indistinguishable on its block. Since my first house, I have lived in two other homes with my parents, a number of dorm rooms, the sorority house in my college town, six different apartments around the city, and two houses of my own. But nothing has had the pull of that first home. In the memory box of that house lives the thudding of my brothers rough housing in the hallway, the smell of my mother’s fresh baked bread and the taste of the strawberries that escaped under the chain-length fence of the sweet elderly neighbors to the rear of us. I can still hear my dad whistling in the garage and the dog’s toenails scratching at the door to let me in from the backyard. Although I spent less than 10 years in that house, they were important ones, and the memories formed there still linger in my everyday life.

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2015

My husband and I moved into our current house three months before our daughter was born. Although the current plan is to plant the “For Sale” sign as soon as the U-Haul pulls away for college, by then she will have spent her entire childhood in this house. Before I am ready, she will leave the room she made hers at three days old; its walls have made the paint progression from baby girl pink to tween green and young lady lavender. Here is the hallway where she took her first steps, the bedroom door she slammed with all her 13-year-old fury and the kitchen counters she no longer needs as a stool to reach the baking pans when we make Christmas cookies. Outside is the rainy sidewalk where she broke her arm on a treacherous two-wheeler, the trees she climbed, the playhouse now overgrown with weeds, the block she took long thoughtful walks around. And the front porch light, under which she may eventually kiss a boy. Wherever we are, she will always have a home, of course. I know my independent girl will make her own lovely world around her. But I am glad we will have given her what my parents gave me. Wherever she lives, she will take with her the memory of home, to be opened over and over again like a gift.
