Celebrate Summer Travel! I

t was a hot August day—although what day of the week it was I couldn’t tell you—as I stepped off the plane into the bustling airport. My eyes, still blurry with sleep, struggled to read signs in a language I had only studied for six months and my ears strained to hear a familiar voice amid all the chatter floating about. I grabbed my bags and headed outside to the busy curb, where a van waited to pick me and about 50 of my classmates up and take us from Aeroporto di Fiumicino in Rome to Florence, Italy.

On the way there, we passed rolling hills blooming with golden sunflowers and colorful villas with lines of clothing swaying in the gentle breeze as they languidly hung from balconies. Then I saw it. Like a weary traveler in the desert just finding water, my eyes eagerly drank up the lapping blue water of the River Arno, with its graceful bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, looming overhead. Following this sight, everyone on the bus rushed to the windows as the grand Duomo came into view. We were home, at least our home for the time. The van made a few sharp turns over the cobbled streets, leading us away from the city center to a quieter, more residential area. I was so enamored with the views of the rivers and villas that I hardly noticed we had stopped. After piling out of the van and grabbing my two huge suitcases, I stood back and took a good look at the heavy brown doors of the old villa on Viale Milton and the people surrounding me. This place, Florence, Italy, would be my home for the next year, and these 50 people would become my family. I was ready to begin the journey. In this issue we take the road less traveled, from Arizona’s historic Verde Canyon Railroad to the pristine beaches and powdered slopes of California. Also, special to this issue, is our first travel-inspired fashion shoot, “Great Escape.”

NOTRE DAME PREP GIRL’S TENNIS TEAM WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Scottsdale’s Notre Dame Prep girl’s tennis team won this year’s AIA Division II State Championship at Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale. It was their first state championship since their five-year run at the top from 2007 to 2011. The NDP team faced their nemesis, Catalina Foothills High School from Tucson, a team they had never defeated before, to claim the title and bring the state championship back to Scottsdale. With NDP winning 5-4, it came down to a tiebreaker in #1 doubles, where junior Alexandra Lehman and senior Alyssa Heid toppled the top-seed Catalina Foothills duo in a come-from-behind victory.

(CON TI N U ED)

T

raveling by train is typically viewed as a mode of transportation from a bygone era, but historians must have forgotten to tell that to the operators of the Verde Canyon Railroad. The historical train, which departs from Clarkdale, Arizona (just 30 minutes from Sedona), traverses through 20 miles of breathtaking Arizona landscape. The most striking vintage feature of the train is its FP7 locomotives—two of just ten left in North America—that power the train. Each car is named after a different place, and features air conditioning, large windows and a snack bar. Guests who want to immerse themselves in the surrounding natural splendor can take in the fresh air on outdoor cars, complete with shaded canopies and benches. A tour guide will discuss all the sights to behold and alert riders of photo opportunities. Maybe you’ll see an eagle or two, and Black Bears and beavers have been known to occasionally make an appearance. The guides have also named certain dramatic rock formations, like the Abraham Lincoln, top hat included, and Nixon’s outline. Even if you don’t spot exactly what the guides point out, you’ll still enjoy all of the dramatic views. As the train speeds by meandering streams, mountains studded with lush green trees and dusty dirt trails with ATVs and Jeeps climbing up, you will gain a true appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the Arizona landscape. At one point, the entire train is submerged in darkness as it heads under a tunnel carved into the mountains. At another, you’ll pass under a dramatic train trestle. The journey’s last, and only, stop before heading back to Clarkdale is Perkinsville— a true ghost town. There, behold a bucolic scene 16

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | July 2016

complete with cows munching on green grass, rolling hills in the background, a small wooden house and a hallowed out water tower. It’s also where the acclaimed 1962 movie How the West Was Won was filmed. Although at one time as many as 12 families lived here, the town served primarily as a water depot for the train until it was abandoned after the Jerome ore mines closed in the 1950s. However, the journey’s not only about taking in the dramatic vistas and getting an informal, albeit interesting, history lesson. The train ride is truly a fun experience for all those onboard. Guests in first-class are treated to Champagne and chips upon sitting down and wine flows freely throughout the day, the bartender also makes a mean Bloody Mary. Seats are plush with thick floral-printed cushions that jive well with the overall vintage feel of the historic train, which has been the site of numerous weddings, vow renewals, birthdays and reunions. Before or after the train departs, it’s well worth checking out the on-site John Bell Museum to see relics of the past. You’ll spot luggage, tools and lights from the turn of the century while reading more about the train’s unique history, which dates back to 1911 when it was used to transport ore miners traveling to nearby Jerome, Arizona. Nearly 80 years later, in 1990, the train took its very first journey as a tourist transport, and business has been booming ever since. Although the hey day of train travel may be long gone, Verde Canyon Railroad is a reminder that it’s still alive, and just a train ticket away. Scottsdale RV SUMMER TRAVEL MADE EASY ARTICLE KORY KILMER PHOTOGRAPHY COACHMAN/FOREST RIVER

S

ummertime means summer vacation, and for many people the best way to relax and unwind is to venture into the great outdoors. For those who like to bring along some of the comforts of home while camping in style, Scottsdale RV has been there to help for the past 10 years. Owned by Ryan Beckmann and Rick Crankshaw, Scottsdale RV has established itself as one of the premier RV dealerships in the Valley, as well as one of the most convenient to get to. “We picked Scottsdale for its centralized location to be able to serve the entire Valley,” explains Rick. “We are the only RV dealership conveniently located to be able to serve everyone, unless you are willing to drive way out east or up to the northwest Valley. We also do a lot of out-of-state business, and being this close to the airport is also a big help for business.” Scottsdale RV was originally founded as an independent dealer of previously owned RVs, though over the last few years they’ve elected to offer a wide selection of new models as well. They are proud to represent Work and Play Toy Haulers, of which they are the number one dealer on the West Coast, as well as a diverse line of Coachmen RVs, one of the most successful names in the RV industry since 1964. “With Coachmen, it’s really just about their quality, their consistency, their level of customer service, and really their continued reputation in this business,” explains Rick. With over 30 years in the RV industry, the Scottsdale team is not just in the business of selling RVs, but as avid RV-ers themselves, 20

have a passion for them as well. They pride themselves in curating a personalized buying experience, and will do what it takes to make sure that every one of their clients is given the proper attention, ensuring that by the time they leave the lot they are prepared and excited for their first adventure. Whether you are new to the scene and are still unsure of what you might want, or have been in it for years and are looking to upgrade, Scottsdale RV is ready to help with an average of around 80 units on-site. Truly a one-stop-shop, they also work with a wide array of banks and credit unions to offer competitive financing options, and are well-versed in shipping across the country or even overseas. “We have something for everyone, from somebody who wants to spend $10K on a nice, solid travel trailer, up to somebody who wants to spend $200K on something top-of-the-line,” says Rick, who himself has been known to pick-up an incoming client from Sky Harbor or even deliver an RV to a client and do a six-hour walk-through of the unit at their own home. Scottsdale RV is located at 6701 East McDowell Road just west of 67th street. For more information on their selection of RVs or to view their most current inventory, visit their website at ScottsdaleRV.com.

THE CALIFORNIA Double Surf and Ski Before the Sun Sets ARTICLE COLIN ROOHAN PHOTOGRAPHY ERIK ISAKSON PHOTOGRAPHICS 32

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | July 2016

W

e sat on the beach as pro-surfer Damien Hobgood stood in front of us with a welcoming grin. The waves behind him were tumultuous, a stark contrast to his demeanor, as he welcomed and invited everyone to complete the California Double.

I immediately got goose bumps all over my body. For those who don’t know, the California Double is an athletic adventure that can only be completed in a few places on earth – surfing and skiing in the same day. Having been a resident of Southern California for roughly three years, I was envious every time I heard the California Double mentioned, so when I had the opportunity to take part in one I was thrilled! Myself, along with a handful of media members whose surfing and skiing skills varied from low to intermediate, met in Huntington Beach early one morning. We approached the welcoming tents adorned with the logos of the event sponsors, Chevy and Fox Head Sports Inc. While waiting for Hobgood to finish taking photos, everyone shivered their way into wetsuits and picked out a surfboard from the provided lot. The waves were only moderately big that day, at times overhead, but the rip currents and wind made conditions difficult for all but Mr. Hobgood. I grabbed my board and headed toward the water, pausing a few moments to wait for a set of waves to finish, then quickly paddled out before the next set started closing in on the shore. It took a few moments before I saw a wave that I thought I had enough of a shoulder to ride, but my patience paid off as a promising one started to build. I spun around toward shore and paddled quickly. The wave had a lot of energy. I dropped in heading to my left, hunched over, one hand guiding my outside rail. I performed a few turns up and down the face of the wave and ascended one last time, kicking out at the last second to avoid being buried in a frothy salt-laden wash cycle. With a grin on my face and a racing pulse, I had completed phase one of the California Double. From Huntington Beach, we drove northeast for two hours toward Snow Summit in the San Bernardino Mountains. The beach gradually gave way to desert topography then pine-populated mountains. We crawled up the switchback roads to an elevation of 6,965 feet, and upon arriving were greeted by the warm sun and a cool breeze. I was more concerned with this portion of the Double as I had never skied before. I picked up my rental gear and struggled to put it on. Luckily, a seasoned vet spotted me wrestling with it and showed me how to put on my boots so that they would be comfortable. I exited the locker room, the gentleman’s earlier comment, “This is a gear-centric sport,” echoing in my head with each awkward, wobbly step I took. Moving with the grace of a toddler, I went over to meet my instructor, Laurie, for a lesson. She approached me and was excited to help me “conquer” skiing, confident that she would be able to help me ski down the mountain...at least once. We set to the task of learning how to propel forward and make a controlled stop. I pressed on, unashamed of my rigid stance and timidness. After a few short conveyor belt rides and slow descents, Laurie instructed me to head for the ski lift. I entered and exited the lift just fine, following Laurie’s instructions exactly. We made two slow multi-stop runs to the bottom as Laurie gave me pointers from nearby. The park was about to close, so we took one last ride on the lift to the top of the slope. This time Laurie felt confident in my abilities not to kill myself, and exclaimed, “Follow me down this time!” On my final run of the day, I zipped down that bunny slope, triumphantly towering over small children, slowly weaving my way back and forth down the mountain with a grin on my face. Phase two complete!

Parting Thoughts

Memory Vacations WORDS KATHLEEN BLAIR

F

or many of us, our lives are just so busy that we can't seem to find the time to plan a full-blown, real vacation. You know, escaping for a week or two to a tropical island or taking a cruise to explore the history and culture of other countries. For some of us, mini-vacations are all we can squeeze-in. For me, I find that memory vacations offer a short escape from a hectic schedule. You may be thinking, what exactly is a memory vacation? Well, it’s setting aside time to reminisce about a past vacation, like when you were a kid and you’d travel with your family to the beach for the day or a week’s stay in a cabin. I can recall that exact special vacation. When I was about six or seven, my parents visited a friend who had a cabin on Lake Huron, one of Michigan’s Great Lakes. I still shudder just thinking about the freezing cold water, which I stubbornly insisted wasn’t cold in spite of my chattering teeth and blue lips. Later, in my teens, I would opt out of swimming in the brisk water and preferred sunbathing or taking mile-long walks on the beach collecting shells instead. Other times, I’ll recall a trip to Europe where I feasted on the amazing cuisine of different countries and went sight-seeing at all the major points of interest—the London Bridge, Leaning Tower of Pisa, and one of my favorites, having lunch in the Eifel Tower. I replay the memory as though I’m watching a home video of me

enjoying the countryside of Switzerland, the gondolas of Venice and the quaintness of Salzburg. Another cherished memory vacation takes me to Greece, where I honeymooned. I recall the few days we spent on the island of Spetses after our cruise of the Greek Islands—strolling down the narrow streets, stopping to eat fresh seafood at outdoor cafes, riding motor scooters around the island and checking out the local shops for hidden treasures. A permanent smile dresses my face and a relaxed state washes over me, taking me from the stress and pressures of the present to the tranquility of those magical memories. It’s always exciting planning a yearly vacation and enjoying the experience. But after the photos have been placed in scrapbooks, it can also be deeply rewarding reliving those personal memories, as too often we get so busy with life that we forget to reminisce on those wonderful, treasured moments we created with friends and family. What special vacation memories do you have that are hidden away, waiting to be dusted off and enjoyed again? For just a moment, close your eyes and recall one of your past vacations and relive the memory—feel the breeze in your hair, recall the taste of the food and the sand beneath your feet. We all love getting away, but sometimes your escape can be savoring the moments of a memory vacation.

Come see our impressive selection of

trees, plants, cacti & succulents. Offering complete landscape service from start to finish. Flagstone • Pavers Lighting • Water Systems (480.473.2230 5335 E. Dixileta Drive Cave Creek, Arizona 85331 42
