Pascal Ibgui has always been drawn to women. But not in the way you might think for a former contestant on ABC’s “The Golden Bachelorette.”

“At a very young age I got along better with women and felt more comfortable around them than with men,” says the owner of Pascal Pour Elle, a luxury, full-service beauty salon in Glencoe. It was this bond with women that moved Ibgui to pursue a career in hairdressing.

“In France, we have what’s called a professional orientation system,” he says. “If your grades aren’t great, at 13, you can go to a trade school instead of traditional education. I chose beauty school. My parents weren’t happy—they even questioned my choices—but I graduated at 16 and started working in a salon.”

Born in Casablanca in 1958, Ibgui moved to Paris with his family after Moroccan independence, growing up modestly outside the city’s fashion scene. The fashion scene would come later.

“My parents came from a hardworking family and had eight of us children; they struggled to feed all those mouths,” says Ibgui, crediting his parents for his work ethic.

Ibgui was eventually offered a position as a behind-the-scenes stylist for models during Paris Fashion Week. “But after a while I felt like that world was not for me, and I really just wanted to do hair,” he says. “That’s when I decided to change my life and move to the United States.”

His friend Charles Ifergan, now a household name in hair but then a budding salon owner in Chicago’s Gold Coast, offered him a job as an assistant. To make ends meet, Ibgui also worked as a busser and took English classes at the local YMCA.

ARTIST’S PALETTE

After years of hard work and building a clientele on Oak Street, Ibgui looked to open his own salon. He and Ifergan opened a salon in Deerfield. After two years, Ibgui got the entrepreneurial itch yet again and took all the cash he had and what he could borrow to open Pascal Pour Elle on Wells Street, followed by another location in Winnetka.

The 2000s saw tremendous growth for Ibgui, following the opening of the flagship Glencoe location in 2000. The success of that salon powered the opening of another location in Glenview in 2005. By then, Ibgui’s thriving business included four salons, a 175-member team, a retail line, and involvement in Chicago Fashion Week.

But it all proved to be a little too much. Looking to slow down, Ibgui closed the multiple locations to focus on the Glencoe salon, which he has renovated over the years to feature a luxury Parisienne-like design and large retail store. The salon offers a wide variety of hairstyling services, from color to cuts, extensions, and more, as well as skin treatments like facials, laser hair removal, and injectables.

It was his daughter who suggested Ibgui try out to be on Season 1 of “The Golden Bachelorette” at the age of 68. He applied once he saw the bachelorette was Joan Vassos, a stunning 61-year-old widow.

Ibgui made it to the final stages of the show but chose to leave, realizing there wasn’t a future with Vassos.

“I don’t regret going on the show; it was an incredible experience and I am grateful to have been a part of it,” says Ibgui, adding that he even formed bonds with the other men and learned how to open up emotionally.

Now, he’s turned his attention back to his true loves: his children, grandchildren, and the North Shore clients he serves.

“We have strong relationships with our clients and like to stay active in the community,” says Ibgui, who also works with several charities to “give back to people who grew up in need like I did.”

Reflecting on his career, Ibgui says he “worked very hard over the years and there have been a lot of bumps in the road, but it seems like I have built up an incredible organization. I’ve never been so happy.”

Survival to Success

GOOGLE

There’s a certain mystique about Google and those who work or have worked for the highly selective, highly competitive tech giant. That’s why we just had to learn more about local business coach Becky Thalmann’s back story—she spent nearly a decade at Google before leaving to start her own business, Vivica Partners. Today, as a Certified Coach and Transformational Leadership Architect, she offers business coaching for professionals, business owners and corporate leaders to overcome obstacles, unlock their full potential, and drive meaningful change in their lives and businesses.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR TIME AT GOOGLE?

Before Google, I worked at Orbitz in Chicago, overseeing strategic partnerships in the travel industry. Google recruited me to do similar work with its travel clients, supporting executives on digital transformation and marketing. Eventually, I moved into overseeing Procter & Gamble’s global partnership, essentially acting as the COO and working with teams both locally and globally. Then, I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, which led me to turn inward and rethink my life and career goals.

HOW DID YOUR CANCER DIAGNOSIS CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE?

When I was diagnosed at 35, with two young kids at the time, it was very life-altering. I took 10 months off for treatment and did everything I could to survive and thrive. That experience gave me a lot of clarity about how I wanted to spend my time. When I came back to Google, I was a different person—a 2.0 version of myself. It solidified my desire to work more directly with people and support them in a deeper way. I became a certified executive coach and was able to transfer those new skills and my previous

experience into a leadership enablement role for 4,000 leaders. I led a team that developed a program called “The Google Way of Coaching,” which is a methodology for teaching leaders to use coaching skills to become more effective. Google still uses the program today, and it’s been very successful and highly regarded. We even won two Brandon Hall gold awards for our program after redesigning it to be all-virtual during the pandemic.

WHAT A LEGACY YOU LEFT AT THE COMPANY. HOW DID YOU START VIVICA PARTNERS, AND WHAT DOES THE NAME MEAN?

I started Vivica Partners six years ago while I was still at Google. I went all-in on it in 2022; it has truly become a culmination of my experience and expertise. The name “Vivica” is a combination of my grandmothers’ names, Vivien and Danica. They were both incredibly courageous, influential women in my life. I have a built-in entrepreneurial spirit like them, and also like my father. He immigrated to this country and started his own business, as did many other family members. The “Partners” in Vivica Partners is important because I see myself as a partner with my clients—not everyone has that same approach.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER THROUGH VIVICA PARTNERS?

I work with leaders, founders, executives and leadership teams. For one-onone coaching, I typically meet clients one to three times in a month to solve challenges and support them in navigating tough decisions and driving change. I also facilitate small group cohorts of professionals who share similar goals and function like a peer group. In addition, I design and facilitate leadership team workshops and offsites, helping teams take a step back, clarify their focus, and solve challenges together.

“A lot of my work is about identifying what’s really going on beneath the surface... if someone struggles with communication, there’s often a deeper blocker—like a fear or a mindset issue.”

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY MAKES YOUR APPROACH UNIQUE?

A lot of my work is about identifying what’s really going on beneath the surface. For example, if someone struggles with communication, there’s often a deeper blocker—like a fear or a mindset issue. Everything is more complex now, and moving so quickly, so it’s easy to just keep doing the same thing day in and day out. As a certified coach, I’m trained in how to change behavior to create more effective results. I don’t come in with a cookie-cutter formula; I custom-design solutions and structures to drive sustainable change rather than just put on a band-aid.

WHO DO YOU TYPICALLY WORK WITH?

I work with a diverse mix of people, from small business owners to founders, leaders and global executives at companies like Google, Crate & Barrel and others. Most of my clients come through referrals, and I work with people all over the country.

HOW CAN SOMEONE WORK WITH YOU?

The first step is booking a discovery call so we can discuss what you, your team or your company is facing. As a Transformational Leadership Architect, I custom-build a partnership plan tailored uniquely to your needs and goals, ensuring we achieve outcomes together.

BE YOUR OWN Valentine

FOUR STEPS FOR PRACTICING SELF-LOVE TO HELP YOURSELF AND OTHERS

When I bring up the topic of self-care, I often get eye rolls— especially from my teenage clients. One of them recently asked me, “Why do I have to like myself?” It’s a fair question, but one with a powerful answer. Learning to love yourself is essential for building confidence and seeking less validation from others. For parents, modeling self-love is one of the best ways to teach your kids how to cultivate their own.

As a self-confidence coach for teenage girls (and the teenage girl in all of us), I’ve seen how self-confidence stems from selflove, self-trust, self-belief, and self-awareness. Here are four steps to help you—and your teens—embrace self-love.

“Learning to love yourself is essential for building confidence and seeking less validation from others”.

1. Try Daily Affirmations

Positive affirmations are a powerful tool for rewiring your brain to focus on self-love and confidence. I keep a sticky note of affirmations on my bathroom mirror right next to my toothbrush. My daughter even has her own set! Some of my favorites include: “My gifts are needed in this world,” “You’ve got this," and "I’ve got you.” This all might sound a little silly to you, so start small. Post just one affirmation where you’ll see it every day and change it up after a while. Let this become a quiet yet consistent reminder of your worth.

2. Schedule Self-Care

Self-care isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s about finding what nourishes you and committing to it. For me, it’s waking up early to work out. For others, it might be reading or taking a walk. Whatever it is, make it non-negotiable. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s a way of showing yourself that you matter.

3. Set Clear Goals

Self-love isn't always about creating comfort for yourself. One of the most loving things you can do for you is to push yourself to fulfill your potential. Take time to consider what you want in this one and only life you're living and what you need to do (and believe) to achieve that. Then, take the first small step by writing down one goal for the year that you know you can achieve. Your self-confidence soars when you are willing to leave your comfort zone.

4. Be Mindful of Negative Self-Talk

Negative self-talk, or the “bully brain,” can be relentless. Talk back to it by turning up the volume on your “bestie brain.” Ask yourself, “What would love sound like right now?” This practice rewires your brain to prioritize kindness over criticism. Loving yourself is a journey, but by practicing these steps, you’re not just building self-confidence—you’re modeling it for your kids. And that’s a gift that lasts a lifetime.

5-INGREDIENT, NO-BAKE NUTELLA TART

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY

AND THE KITCHEN

I have a bit of a Nutella obsession. I even created a section on my blog, girlandthekitchen.com, with recipes and love letters dedicated to the chocolate-hazelnut spread. Just in time forValentine’s Day, this recipe calls for only five ingredients and NO oven for an easy treat to enjoy solo or share with loved ones. You can also make the tart two to three days ahead of time and let it rest in the fridge or freeze it; just take it out to defrost it on the counter one hour before serving.

ingredients:

Cookie Crust:

• 25 Oreo cookies

• 1/2 cup butter, melted

Chocolate Filling:

• 1 cup Nutella

• 8 ounces (2 bars) bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped

• 1 cup heavy cream

Optional Garnish:

• Fresh raspberries

• Coarsely chopped hazelnuts

directions:

Step 1. Place cookies in a food processor and process until finely ground (or finely chop cookies by hand and place in a large bowl). Add butter and process for another 10-15 seconds (or fold in the butter using a rubber spatula).

Step 2. Press the mixture into a 14-inch rectangular or 9-inch round nonstick, glass or ceramic fluted tart pan with your hands or with the back of a spoon until evenly spread out. Freeze for 15 minutes.

Step 3. Meanwhile, make the filling. Scoop out the measured Nutella into a mixing bowl. In a small or medium saucepot, heat the cream over medium-low heat until it starts to simmer gently. Turn off heat and pour cream over the Nutella in the bowl. Add chocolate and mix well with a wooden spoon until chocolate melts and mixture is creamy.

Step 4. Remove the crust from the freezer. Pour Nutellachocolate mixture evenly over the prepared crust. Top with raspberries spaced about an inch apart. Sprinkle hazelnuts, if using, sparingly between the raspberries. Freeze for 15 minutes or refrigerate for 2 hours before slicing into 8 to 12 pieces and serving.

Inspiration for your best local life. Good news happening right in your neighborhood.
