The Total Joint Center of the Northland is pleased to feature one of our outstanding orthopedic surgeons each month. We would like to introduce Dr. Steven Smith, who has treated patients in the Northland for many years: Dr. Smith earned his undergraduate degree from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville Missouri with a B.S. in pre-professional zoology. He played Division II football while attending Northwest Missouri State. He completed his Medical Degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa and completed his residency in Orthopedics at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. He joined Northland Bone & Joint in August of 2000 and was a partner through December of 2016. Dr. Smith is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery which he received in 2002. Dr. Smith opened his own private practice in January 2017 which is known as Northland Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. He has been the team physician for Park Hill South and Park Hill School District for 18 years. He is also serving as the team physician for Park University and has been for 18 years. Dr. Smith has served as the President of Medical Staff at North Kansas City Hospital and at St. Luke’s Northland Hospital. He has also served as the Chairman of the department of Surgery at North Kansas City Hospital. Dr. Smith’s primary practice focus is knee and shoulder sports medicine, hip and knee total joint replacements and hand surgery. He treats patients with work related injuries, sports injuries, sprains, torn ligaments, and fractures. Dr. Smith shares his thoughts about out-patient joint replacement at the Total Joint Center of the Northland:
DR. STEVEN SMITH, M.D.
“The changes that have occurred in the care delivered during and around the time of joint replacement surgery over the past 19 years of my practice are astounding. Being able to be involved in a physician driven center with a small group of highly motivated surgeons has made the Total Joint Center of the Northland very successful. I have patients that have had surgery performed at many different medical institutions and they all rank the Total Joint Center of the Northland as the best out-patient surgery center experience. We are always seeking continuous improvement in the way we deliver total joint perioperative care, and I look forward to watching the Total Joint Center evolve and grow along with these changes.”
OUR MISSION IS TO CARE FOR EVERY PATIENT AND THEIR FAMILY AS IF THEY WERE OUR OWN.

IF YOU LOVE MOVIES, AND I DO, YOU MAY HAVE SEEN THE KINGSMEN A FEW YEARS BACK. In it, Colin Firth plays an undercover member of Great Britain’s most secret society, the Kingsmen. And in it, he answers this question, "Manners maketh man." Manners do make the man but that's only the tip of the iceberg. The men in my life are held to a high standard and, by and large, they exceed it. I'm blessed to be married to a man that works hard and takes pride in all that he does. I can't imagine raising children with anyone but him. When putting this issue together and reading Jeron's letter about raising her son, I started thinking about raising girls, too. My husband is more than just a partner to me; he's an example for my daughters of what to expect in a relationship. No pressure, right? Luckily, he's showing them the important stuff--hard work, kindness, and a sense of whimsy as he makes time to play. This issue was a lot of fun to write. Our feature about the gentlemen of the

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
#boymom HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, GENTLEMEN! I'm out numbered in my house right now, with my husband, Zach, and our son, Coy. I'm a proud #boymom especially because I have a great partner and example for him to look up to on what it means to be a man. Zach is as rambunctious and energetic as Coy is--he's a chip off the old block! Raising boys is a full contact sport--Coy is full of energy and already looking forward to having a baby brother, even though we don't know the gender of his new sibling yet! Although he's only three, we've already started teaching him to be brave, courageous, strong, kind, and to stand up for his beliefs. Zach has always been active (he played college football at William Jewell and became a personal trainer), and now my two boys love spending time outside, going fishing, hunting for morels, and completing outdoor projects together. Watching Coy's face light up when Zach gets home from work makes my heart soar and I'm so excited to see what the two of them will accomplish as they grow together. Our husbands, fathers, grandfathers, and brothers have a tough job. Keeping up with us women isn't easy; neither is walking the tightrope between strength and tenderness that young boys need to see. I'm so blessed that Zach is up to the task, as was my Dad before him. If we keep encouraging the good men in our life, hopefully Coy will grow up in a generation of men that will continue those high standards. As my Dad always said, "Run fast and jump high." I can already see this motto taking hold for Coy. So thank you, gentlemen! We couldn't do it without you!

He later carved out a career in the Air Force, having attended the U.S. Air Force Academy and serving as an F-15 pilot, instructor, flight examiner and 9th Air Force Top Gun. He left the Air Force as a Captain. He returned to Iowa to assist his father at his successful, growing dealership. He wore many hats, learning the business from the inside out, until hearing about the opportunity in 1989 to turn around a failing dealership in Kansas City. He took on the challenge and built Randy Reed PontiacBuick (original name) into a thriving enterprise.

Richie to Air Supply to Kenny Rogers. Michael Jackson was a big influence at the time,” he says. Although he has been singing since he was young, his guitar skills came later. He started taking lessons while he was at college at Colombia College. After college, he started a band and found a bit of success. After a few years, Palma joined the fire department. The irregular schedule of 24 hour shifts but long spaces between meant that there was time to pursue what had rapidly become a passion--his music. After playing with a band called Broken Cowboys for several years, the band was picked up by a Nashville manager--Tim McGraw’s manager to be specific. After a bit of the Nashville treatment, Palma found himself on his own again. Gradually, he built the band back up using his own name. Now he has regular gigs at The Landing on Thursday nights and is getting ready to tour with his new EP. Palma now stands on the precipice of stardom. He’s excited to perform at festivals throughout the tristate region. The single, Last Summer, has been released on Q104, 106.5, and 94.1. As Billboard stations, these stations don’t normally play local artists but after building relationships with them through the years, they are playing Palma’s music and loving it. So what’s next for Palma? Until the major labels come calling, he’s biding his time. “The thing about it is you have to be willing to make IT’S NOE, PRONOUNCED ‘NO E’. There, that’s out of the way. MUCH. Whether we are on the couch or working at the office, this sedentary lifestyle is taking its toll on our bodies. Jonny Mack, one of the personal trainers and co-owners of Anytime Fitness in Liberty explains how sitting isn’t just rounding our shoulders; it’s killing our legs too. “If I’m working with a client that works at a desk, which is 90% of my clients, I’m working on lengthening the muscles in the front of the body to counter act the effects of hunching over. Because people are sitting, your hamstrings and glutes naturally smash up against the chair and don’t do anything. We do a lot of glute strengthening to engage them and wake them up,” says Mack. Modifying one basic movement can prolearn a completely new move. Plus, Mack advocates for compound movements that work more than one body part at a time. Mack recommends working in two sets to start, doing enough reps that you come within three or four reps of your failure rate. For some that may be eight, for others 12. Listen to your body. For the office dwellers with disengaged glutes, he humbly submits: the lunge. CONTINUED >

In a kneeling position, place one foot on the box, stabilizing by engaging your core. Lunge forward toward the front foot, stretching the front hip flexor in the supporting leg. Engage your abs to keep yourself upright. To add an upper body element, grab a length of PVC pipe, a yoga strap or a towel and pull your arms up and over your head, as shown, opening the shoulders.
2 . RUNNERS LUNGE OR SPLIT STANCE SQUAT Start with feet hip width apart. Start with one foot forward and and one back. Lunge forward as far as is comfortable. Maintain upright posture but don’t force yourself rigidly upright. Some movement forward is natural. Engage the abs to maintain your balance. if you need support, grab a bar or the back of a chair to steady yourself. Lunge forward over the

forward foot--it’s okay to go past the toe if it is comfortable. Return to starting position.
3 . E L E V AT E D L U N G E For those that have worked out some of their balance issues, move onto the elevated lunge. While the floor lunge elevated the front foot, the elevated lunge lifts the back foot. Place the back foot on a bench or chair, either with the top of the foot down or flexed; each position is valuable and stretches the foot in different ways. Lunge forward with the front foot and bend until max flex has been achieved in the ankle, knee, and hip. Throughout, keep the body upright by engaging the abs. If you want more of a challenge, grab a prop and open up the chest by stretching arms up and over the head. Push through the leg to return to upright position. Exercise 3 28

intentionally intimate environment, the bar has 48 seats compared to 200 seats upstairs. “The building is from 1901, so we didn’t want it to feel as if we walked in there and shoved all this brand new stuff in this building,” she says. “We wanted it to feel like this furniture could have always been there and was really well thought out, collected and curated over time.” While producing quality whiskey in Kansas City has been part of the Rieger family history since their first distillery in 1887, Rieger views the move to a larger space as a meaningful project for the city. “Whether you’re a drinker or not, J. Rieger & Co. is just a good pride point for the city,” she says. “I always describe it as that place I would take my brother and my dad when they come to town. You want to take them to go do something and see something, so I think it’s going to be really cool for that purpose.”

what it is There are many different types of fades, but ultimately a fade haircut is one that tapers in length the further down you go on the back and sides, meaning it isn’t trimmed to just one standard length all around. The level of fade (low, mid or high) depends on what point the shortest part of the hair begins to fade into a longer length. ASK FOR Taper fade, low fade, mid fade, high fade or skin fade
+
what it is This popular style is good for many types of hair as long as you have a lot of it. You’ll need length in the front, back and sides generally long enough to at least brush your shoulders. KEEP IT CLEAN Be sure to keep your sideburns and neckline trimmed even as your hair grows out.

what it is Closely related to the pompadour, the quiff haircut requires longer hair in the front and shorter hair in the back. The longer hair in the front is brushed upward and back from the forehead and away from the face. This look can be sleek and shiny for a classic look or texturized and matte for a modern take. ASK FOR Short sides and a long textured top. Be sure enough hair is left on top to brush back instead of standing straight up.

AS THE SENIOR PASTOR AT LINDEN BAPTIST CHURCH, TERRY WEBSTER PULLS INSPIRATION FROM EVERYWHERE. While the Bible may be the touchstone for his sermons, he often incorporates more contemporary writers in his messages as well. When he has a break from studying the Bible, he enjoys other perspectives, such as The Book of Joy by the Dalai Llama and Desmond Tutu. These six books represent a wide variety of think pieces that are easily accessible to both the scholar and common man alike. Beyond his six favorites, he also enjoys the work of Malcolm Gladwell, especially The Tipping Point and Outliers. So grab one of these titles and cozy up to a new perspective! 42
