The Style Issue

A stylish September

Hi Northlanders!

September is here – school is in session, the weather will soon start to cool, and the beginning of the end of the year is arriving! I cannot believe we’re this far into 2024 already — it feels like the year has flown by. But here we are! September is always home to our style issue, and I love thinking about all things style. Obviously, one can think about how stylish a person can be in terms of their clothing, but this month, we look at stylish spaces in the pages of our magazine.

We start with a local painter, Julie Hansen, whose brightly-colored artwork would add a wow factor to any space. We also tour the home of two pet-loving Northlanders, whose furry friends add inspiration and design consideration in every corner of their home. And I’ve been wanting to feature the new Liberty restaurant Osteria Bianchi for months, and it is right at home in the pages of this month’s magazine with its stylish interior — and, of course, delicious Italian food never goes out of style.

We hope you find style inspiration in the pages of our magazine this month and hope it’s a great start to your September.

Until next month,

KATIE

and STYLE SUBSTANCE

The new Osteria Bianchi wants you to invite you to the table

Walking into Osteria Bianchi feels like walking into someone’s home. The wall that greets you at the front, the one co-owner Kelly Bianchi calls the “wall of accountability,” features personal photos that showcase amazing chefs she and her husband, Josh, have met and worked with throughout their impressive careers in the food industry — not to brag but to continue to inspire the two.

There are fresh flowers everywhere, and a bookcase — which literally came out of Kelly’s home — is filled with well-used cookbooks written by friends and colleagues.

It’s hard to believe the restaurant is actually in a strip mall in Liberty, which is Kelly’s goal — to transport you somewhere inviting.

“Being faced with a strip mall location, we wanted to make sure that the interior of the restaurant felt warm and comfortable,” says Kelly.

Kelly says it’s hard for her to talk style and design when it comes to her restaurant, Osteria Bianchi, which she owns and operates with her husband Josh. But you wouldn’t believe that looking at the cozy space that she designed, adorned with velvet curtains, moody colors, shiny wall treatments, whimsical wallpapers and a statement light fixture above the bar.

“A lot of the pieces that are in the restaurant are pieces that came from our house,” says Kelly. “We wanted it to feel warm and comfortable. I would say that, above all, we wanted it to be inviting.”

Kelly and Josh opened Osteria Bianchi this February as a chef-driven regional Italian restaurant. The married couple moved to the Kansas City area in 2023 after bouncing back and forth between New York and Las Vegas for 26 years. During their careers, they worked for an impressive array of restaurants and hotels including Vetri Cucina, DB brasserie, Picasso, Alize, The Wynn, and Palazzo in Las Vegas and Gramercy Tavern and Payard in New York.

Their new venture is definitely a change of pace from their Las Vegas livelihood, but they love the family-driven operation and living in Liberty. They now have a 5-minute commute to work and get lots of help from nearby relatives. Even their two teenagers have taken on roles in the restaurant.

While this is the Bianchi’s first brick-andmortar restaurant that they’ve owned together, they bring their vast knowledge of hospitality to the table. In Osteria Bianchi, Kelly bounces around from table to table, chatting with guests and making sure the service team is tailoring the experience to each patron, while Josh leads the kitchen.

“We do our best to make sure every guest leaves being extremely well taken care of, and if

that’s not the case, we want to do everything we can to either bring them back to try us again, or to make it up to them, preferably while we’re while they’re still in the restaurant,” says Kelly.

On top of the special attention paid to the decor and guests is, of course, the thoughtfulness applied to each dish. In Osteria Bianchi, almost every ingredient — from the doughs to the pastas to the bread to the ice cream — is made in-house. The ingredients are sourced painstakingly by Kelly and Josh, who prioritize quality ingredients that go into the dishes that Josh and his team make in the kitchen.

But while the dishes are thoughtfully curated, Kelly and Josh’s goal is still an approachable restaurant — one where you can become a regular.

“I’d say the [best] part for everyone is developing a great group of regular clientele that the servers know who they are,” says Kelly. “We’re a neighborhood restaurant, and we’re not trying to be a special occasion restaurant.”

Whether it’s your first time in the space or you’re there to order the usual, the Bianchi’s are ready to get you fed, make you feel at home, and make sure you come back again.

BRINGING A BLANK CANVAS TO LIFE

LOCAL ARTIST JULIE HANSEN TALKS ABOUT HER CREATIVE PROCESS AND HER LOVE OF PAINTING

Julie Hansen is a color lover. Her vibrant paintings rarely feature a spot of pure white. She loves mixing colors, reveling in the buttery fragility of pastels and mixing broken pieces onto paper or creating custom shades of acrylic paint with her palette knife.

ARTICLE BY KATIE CURRID PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH SCHREINER

We talked to the Parkville-based artist about her art, her process and what inspires her.

CONTINUED >

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR PAINTINGS?

For the landscape work, inspiration is found in the beauty of nature. I love the Midwest, with its tall grass prairies, flowers and big sky. I once spent a weekend just painting and sketching alone in the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve in Strong City, KS. It was an experience that enriched my work. I feel it’s important for artists to find what they are passionate about and stay inspired and informed. The changing seasons, especially fall and spring with their colors, has me itching to paint more pastels!

For my abstract boat pieces, inspiration comes from our travels — in particular, our

time spent living bayside in Melbourne, Australia. We were lucky to live there for two years. The blues of the bay, the bright color of the vegetation and painted bathing boxes along the ocean were so sublime. I joined a plein air painting group and spent time painting all of it!!

When I came back to the US, my work began changing. It was really hard at first. I didn’t know where I was going with it exactly. I just had to let go of my old ideas in the studio and slowly things started happening. The boat shapes began to emerge, and I was picked up by Serena & Lily based out of Sausalito, CA. I saw that a professor of mine was represented by them, so I sent

"I HOPE IT MAKES THEM HAPPY. I FEEL ART SHOULD LIFT YOU UP."

images of my new body of work, and they loved them. I’ve been so grateful, because it has allowed me to connect with collectors across the country!

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

My creative process tends to be spontaneous. I usually dive right in!  There’s just something so exciting about a blank canvas. I will make marks and mix paint until it’s just right — then I sign it. If it’s a commission, that’s another story. I carefully consider all elements of the piece to be sure it’s exactly what the collector is wanting. The process may take a little

longer, but it’s so satisfying to have a collector that is absolutely ecstatic with their new artwork.

WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL SETTING OR ROUTINE FOR WHEN YOU SIT DOWN TO PAINT?

My studio that is in our home. We designed it when we moved in. We live in a beautiful part of Parkville, up on the bluffs. So the studio has a nice view with lots of natural light. I worked with a local craftsman to have a custom table made where I do my paintings, and have storage for my paints, pastels, canvases, etc. The table top lifts up, similar to an easel, for working more upright. It’s on coasters, so

it can move around the room when I want to take it closer to the windows or to make room for photographing larger paintings. It’s a work of art in itself. The studio also has large flat files to house works on paper. I love the space, and fill it with music while I paint.

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AN ARTIST?

A nun, Sister Cecilia, at St. Pius X, my high school art teacher. She was a great encouragement to me and pushed me to further develop my artistic talents and pursue a career in the arts.

I also grew up with a very creative mother. She didn’t paint, but she was always making beautiful things by hand. My father was a mail carrier, and he would tell me about art that he saw on his routes and find art competitions for me to enter. They were both very supportive.

DO YOU HAVE ANY KIND WORDS THAT SOMEONE HAS SAID ABOUT YOUR WORK THAT STICK WITH YOU?

I hear from collectors that they love the way the paintings make them feel when they walk into their home. They didn’t realize the impact art would make. Soon they start collecting more work. It’s fun to be a part of the process. My collectors and galleries become my friends, and I am so grateful for that friendship.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE FEEL OR THINK WHEN THEY VIEW YOUR ART?

I hope it makes them happy. I feel art should lift you up. When they look at the pastels, I hope they speak to their soul.

They’re poetic, rich and passionate. I hope the boats bring about a feeling of exploration, discovery, enjoyment as a symbol of a favorite pastime perhaps. They are a statement piece, reflecting the owners’ love of the sea, sailing and adventure. The abstract paintings I hope bring joy and energy to a room.

WHAT PLACE ARE YOU MOST PROUD THAT YOUR WORK HAS BEEN SHOWCASED?

A solo show at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri. It was titled, “The Prairie - Enduring and Endearing.” The museum kept one of my pastels for their own collection.

There’s a suite at the Hotel Indigo in the East Crossroads of Kansas City that has my name on it. I worked with the owners in selecting and creating new work exclusively for the boutique hotel. It was a very fun project! Most recently, I am very excited to have painted a commissioned boat painting that is now hanging at the Bay Marina Sands Hotel in Singapore.

Julie is represented by Prairiebrooke Arts in Overland Park, Kansas locally and you can find her work on Serena & Lily. You can also find her work in a new online-exclusive art show this month with Sorelle Gallery in Westport, Connecticut. Find more about her at jhansenart.com or on Instagram at @j.hansenart

A Home for Man’s Best Friend

A PLATTE COUNTY COUPLE THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED THEIR HOME TO CATER TO THEIR FURRY FRIENDS

Risa’s

style is all about her pets. That’s why, when she and her husband, Brandon, designed and built their dream home in rural Platte County two years ago, their pets’ needs were their first consideration.

The teardrop-shaped green labradorite pendant that Risa Canseco Groh wears each and every day is more than just a beautiful piece of jewelry. It is a piece of her heart.

The pendant contains the ashes of Jet, the black lab she and her husband Brandon raised and loved together for more than 16 years.

“He was our first baby,” says Risa as she touches the pendant gently. Labradorite comes from the Canadian province of Newfoundland/Labrador, known for their beautiful dogs.

Risa’s style is all about her pets. That’s why, when she and her husband, Brandon, designed and built their dream home in rural Platte County two years ago, their pets’ needs were their first consideration.

For example, U.S. standards for hallways are a minimum of 36 inches, although typical hallways are 42 – 48 inches wide. The Grohs designed their hallways to be six feet wide.

“Having an animalaccessible home is more important to many pet owners than extra square footage or a shorter commute to work.

“I’m like a human pinball machine bouncing off the walls every night as we go to bed and every morning as we head to the kitchen,” says Risa, who has four dogs and one cat, all who wiggle to be closest to her wherever she goes.

“This extra width gives me a chance to stay on my feet and not step all over the babies,” Groh says.

For the same reasons, the Grohs designed extra space in the bathrooms. We all know the unwritten laws of pet ownership prevent humans from using the bathroom alone.

The Grohs are not alone in making substantial decisions about their home to accommodate animals. A 2022 survey by Realtor.com revealed that 82 percent of Americans with pets consider their animals’ needs of equal or greater importance than human needs.

“Having an animal-accessible home is more important to many pet owners than extra square

footage or a shorter commute to work” says Clare Trapasso, executive editor at Realtor.com.

A fenced-in yard is the most common feature. The Grohs own six acres and have fenced four of those acres to allow plenty of space for the big dogs to run. However, they have fenced a smaller space just off the back patio where the smaller critters can run without feeling lost.

The next most common style component of a pet owner’s house, according to Realtor.com, is an in-house dog shower/ bath station. Risa Groh calls theirs a doggie spa.

The room, just off the garage, is 10 by 18 feet and includes the family’s washer/dryer. Otherwise, the space is all for the animals. It includes a 48-inch-wide stainless steel dog wash station, typical of that found at PetSmart, Pettersson’s in Parkville and other animal care stores.

Adjacent to that is a drying station and space for Risa to trim their nails and administer other needs. Pegs on the wall hold leashes and other necessities.

The doggie spa is just off the kitchen where the Grohs prepare the animals’ meals. But the four dogs don’t always play well together when Risa places the food dishes on the floor. So, they installed a glass pocket door between the kitchen and spa to separate the dogs at feeding time. The glass allows the humans to notice any concerns with the dogs as they eat.

What makes the spa room very special to the couple is the custom designed wallpaper. It includes images of their first pet together, Jet, as well as their other animals.

The Grohs love for Jet is also memorialized in the stained concrete surface of their front porch. They mixed some of his ashes into the concrete “so he’ll always be sitting on the porch with us.”

There are touches of their love for their pets all over the home. A Victorian doorknob and a brass door knocker both feature black labs, too, and the massive stone/gas corner fireplace in the bedroom is neither for romance, nor for Risa and Brandon’s comfort.

“Our boy Hank gets so cold, so this space is for the dogs’ beds and for them all to snuggle when they are cold,” Risa says.

The one thing Brandon and Risa love almost as much as their pets is throwing a party. Their house design includes a 2,400 sq ft garage. This includes space for two vehicles and for Brandon to rebuild a 1964 Ford pick-up truck, as well as a small kitchen and living space and big screen TV mounted on the wall. A disco ball spins from the ceiling.

The décor includes plenty of Chiefs and Royals memorabilia, a life-sized Taylor Swift cutout and enlarged photos of their four-legged friends.

We’re told a framed version of this story may make it to the wall of honor.

Now that’s what we call style.

Adventure Awaits

Chance Adventure Co gives families the freedom to hit the open road in classic style.

Kelley and Sam Chance have it figured out when it comes to spending quality family time together with their two young sons, Sully, 9, and Grady, 7. They literally took a chance in 2013 and bought Stella, a 1984 Airstream Excella, as a renovation project. One family camping trip and they were hooked. Now they are true vintage Airstream enthusiasts.

They sold Stella, but the “silver bullet” calling never left and Chance Adventure Co was born. Sam had talked for years about renovating and renting Airstreams.

“There’s something magical about those silver trailers, especially the old ones. They have such character, and many stories within their aluminum walls.”

“Once the pandemic hit, it was now or never,” Kelley says. “We welcomed Carolina into our family, a 1983 31’ Excella, and she’s been rocking out camping trips with us and our clients since early last year. In 2020, she traveled to Yellowstone, Glacier, the Badlands, Upper Peninsula in Michigan, Indiana Dunes, Kannapolis, Kansas and more. Georgia, a 1978 31’ Sovereign Land Yacht, is currently being renovated from the frame up.”

They will be adding to their fleet soon and are adding an Airstream Renovation Workshop on their Tonganoxie property. They also have the Chance Adventure Co shop, loaded with outdoorsy inspired items.

Adventure is a part of life for this active couple, who live on 10 acres. They have horses, garden, hike, bike and explore.

“By far, our favorite thing to do as a family is travel and spend time outdoors. We hiked the three miles roundtrip, 480-foot climb to Delicate Arch when the boys were 8 and 5, biked through the Badlands, kayaking Lake Michigan. We’ve had so many incredible experiences connecting the four of us, and connecting us to nature via camping,” she says. “The boys have learned a deep appreciation and love for Mother Earth, to navigate the terrain using a compass or their own wits, to identify and care for the flora and fauna around us, and they’ve gained so much confidence and courage through it all.”

Each trailer is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized after each rental. Airstreams are available for rental for road trips, or they can deliver and set up at local locations.

“There’s something magical about those silver trailers, especially the old ones. They have such character, and many stories within their aluminum walls,” she says. “Making them a part of our family story just made sense.”

FINDING A TOUCH OF GLAM IN EVERYDAY DESIGN

ARTICLE BY ALLISON GIBESON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
HGTV star shares her secrets to make a home look both beautiful and livable.

Tamara Day, star of HGTV’s Bargain Mansions, describes her style as “laid-back luxe.”

“I am a mom of four, and I like pretty, shiny things,” Tamara says. “The two don’t always mix well. I design with lifestyle and family in mind but with that touch of glam.”

This mixture of practicality and flare can be accomplished throughout the home on a budget, Tamara says.

When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets.

“You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says.

In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast.

“Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says.

To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas

and rugs because less expensive options will not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family.

Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted.

Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences.

MAKING COLOR, TEXTURE AND PATTERN STAND OUT

Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great?

HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS:

Find a base color with pops of other colors.

“Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.”

If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room.

Consider wallpaper.

“Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says.

Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs.

Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.
