Editor's Letter

Happy Anniversary! D

ear Readers, That's right, it's been four years since Northland Lifestyle first launched. Over the last 48 issues, I've been blessed to meet some of the kindest and most unique people in the Northland. When I took this position, I didn't know what to expect. Now I know to expect to be surprised as I learn something new about my neighborhood each month. Thank you for being a community that I can be proud of!

This month's issue is all about summertime fun. Mark Armato walks back through time and picks up where he left off as a teenager--at Worlds of Fun. After a career as a history teacher, he has gone back to doing what he does best, robbing trains and stealing laughs as a bandit on the train line at the amusement park. It just shows that you can go back again. For the participants in the Wheel It Forward wheelchair tennis tournament, the fun can go on all year long. The Northland Racquetball Club welcomed players for the tournament, giving people who thought they would never swing a racquet again an opportunity to serve and volley and even take home a bit of prize money. The Funky Monkey Corn Company will surely be on my list of places of try this summer. This popcorn shop creates custom popcorn flavors regularly and even created one specifically for Gladstone's Linden Square! With their commitment to a zero waste shop and using non-GMO corn, they are doing what they love on their terms and people are eating it up!

As the sounds of summer filter in to our little house in the Northland, I'm grateful for the opportunity to tell these stories month after month. Thank you for welcoming Northland Lifestyle into your homes. We hope to tell your stories for many years to come.

KANSAS CITY SELECTED FOR 2015 NAVY WEEK What’s it like to be deployed at sea for six months? What new technologies is the Navy currently developing? These questions and many more will be answered in Kansas City. One of 12 cities selected to host a 2015 Navy Week, a Navy signature outreach program. KC Navy Week is scheduled for August 17-23, coincident with the KC Aviation Expo and Air Show, and is designed to provide area residents an opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people, and its importance to national security and prosperity. “Outreach programs like Navy Weeks are extremely important to ensure Americans outside Fleet concentration areas have the opportunity to connect with their Navy,” says Commander James Stockman, director, Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO). “Navy Weeks allow Americans to meet face-to-face with Navy personnel to increase their understanding that their Navy is a war fighting force, deployed around the world and always ready.”

LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS TO GENERATE MONEY FOR THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES Tracy Spisak, owner of Gallery Portraiture (GalleryPortraiture.com) is hosting an event, "You are my Sweetest Gift," with proceeds benefitting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City. The entire session fee will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City to benefit families whose children are affected with life threatening illnesses. The team at Gallery Portraiture works with each child and family to capture true life expressions and interactions that will transform your life into art. "Around here we celebrate every day. We truly understand that each day is a gift. Ronald McDonald House Charities has always been a charity very close to our hearts at Gallery Portraiture but became even more important to us, when our team member's daughter, Ciara, was diagnosed with cancer three years ago. RMHC has been there when Ciara and her family has needed them. We want to show our continued support to them for all the great things they do for families facing the impossible." says Tracy Spisak, owner of Gallery Portraiture. GREAT GUNS IN LIBERTY HOSTS FEMALE FRIENDLY CONCEAL AND CARRY CLASSES Is a handgun the newest trend in accessories for women? The answer would be yes, if you ask Kathy Peisert, owner of Great Guns in Liberty. She has seen an increase in women in the Conceal and Carry classes she hosts, monthly.

“There are women in every one of the classes now,” says Mrs. Peisert. According to her records over the last sixteen months, women comprise an average of 35 percent of the classes. Female gun ownership has doubled from 2005 to 2013, according to a 2014 National Shooting Sports Foundation study. The Great Guns "CCW" classes are taught by Richard Eaton who specializes in firearms training and attorney Kevin Jamison who teaches the legal portion of the course. Richard has been an FFL holder for decades and has been an NRA certified instructor certified in personal protection and pistol safety for over 10 years. A fee is charged and reservations are required for the monthly classes, which can be made by visiting, or calling Great Guns, of Liberty, at 816.781.2323.

Confidence, Curiosity and Courage

Earn Gabby Frierson A Chance to Compete FIFTH GRADER QUALIFIES FOR NATIONAL AMERICAN MISS PRE-TEEN PAGEANT ARTICLE PEGGY PAROLIN | PHOTOGRAPHY LANI ODELL

“B

e yourself; tell the truth; be proud of yourself, and know you’re capable of doing anything you want to do.” While this is great advice for anyone and from any one of any age, it’s being offered by Gabrielle Frierson, age 10, a fifth grader at Lewis and Clark Elementary School in Liberty. "Gabby" not only shares these words of wisdom, she lives by them. The young lady’s confidence, curiosity and courage earned her a spot as a contestant in the National American Miss (NAM) Pre-Teen Competition. “This is a different kind of pageant,” Gabby explains. “This is not a beauty pageant.” In fact, the girls are not allowed to wear make-up and there is no swimsuit competition. The NAM Pageant is dedicated to shaping future leaders and equipping them with life-long skills, such as self-confidence, good sportsmanship and achieving personal goals. The girls are judged on communication, interviewing skills, talent and academic achievement. “When I found out I’d been selected, I was so happy," shares Gabby. "I can’t believe I get this opportunity. I’m excited about sharing my gifts with many more people and also setting an example for others, showing them anything is possible.” Gabby’s desire to share her gift of singing is not a new one. She is a singer who has performed in contests and sings gospel music at her 18

Northland Lifestyle | July 2015

church. She’s performed in her school’s talent show for the past two years, twice offering a memorable delivery of the National Anthem. While she’s a fan of all kinds of music, Gabby enjoys singing “slow, pretty songs” and likes to listen to rock and roll. She further shares her singing talents by entertaining elderly residents local nursing facilities. Although she’s only 10, Gabby already knows she wants to pursue a career as a marine biologist someday. Her passion for underwater creatures and all things related to water and wildlife inspired her to join the Young Environmentalists Club sponsored by the SEA LIFE Kansas City Aquarium. Members of the club learn about sea creatures, what they eat, and which ones are endangered. They help “spread the message of conservation.” “As Young Environmentalists, we learn so much about sea creatures,” Gabby offers. “We dissected a small squid and learned how it spit outs ink. We also study the ecosystem. We do so many exciting things!” “I enjoy studying sea life and helping to find ways to prevent water pollution," Gabby continues. “We study all kinds of wildlife and sea life. We travel to local rivers and see the pollution people have made. We want to find ways to prevent that.” A favorite activity of Gabby’s is visiting the Manta Ray room at the SEA LIFE Aquarium. “I love manta rays, turtles, and especially, cuttlefish,” she says. “I think cuttlefish are the absolute cutest, but my Mom has other opinions about them. She thinks they’re slimy.” Gabby will compete in the NAM State Pageant June 28-29, 2015 in Columbia. The winner receives a $1000 cash award, the official crown and banner, and air transportation to compete in the NAM Pageant in California, along with a tour of Hollywood and two VIP tickets to Disneyland. Should she win the $,1000 cash award, Gabby already knows what she’ll do with it. “I’ve always wanted a pet turtle called a Red-eared Slider. I would get one of those and a nice tank for it to live in. Then, I’ll buy a few gifts for my neighbors for helping me. I’ll also want to get some gifts for my cousins, my mom, dad, and my sisters. They’ve all helped me so much. I want to give something back to them.” Gabby is the daughter of Christopher Frierson and Heather Staggers Frierson.

The GREAT TRAIN Robbery 20

Northland Lifestyle | July 2015

The costume and show has changed a bit over the years but once a bandit, always a bandit.

Mark Armato repeats the past with his train robbing job at Worlds of Fun. ARTICLE JENNIFER HIGGINS | PHOTOGRAPHY LANI ODELL

said in Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, “Can’t reJaypeatGatsby the past? Why, of course you can.” For Northlander Mark Armato, the sentiment is coming true this summer. In 1976-1977, Armato worked as a train robber on the Worlds of Fun railroad, making $2.25 an hour, working from April through October. Then after college came 32 years of teaching American history at Maple Park Middle School. Upon retirement, he needed a part-time job to help with insurance. On a whim, he applied to Worlds of Fun and was hired as a train robber on the train show, doing the same job he did 38 years before. Armato works from noon-6 p.m., six days a week; with two shows an hour; that means he does 11-12 shows a day. Armato has already noticed a few changes between train robbing stints. “Obviously the pay is better now. Before, the stage was a false front with no conveniences, and we were out there all day, in the heat and the cold. Now, there’s a little cabin with a window unit, fresh water, and table and chairs. Some of the other guys bring their laptops; I bring a book and sit out on the porch between shows. Also, before the closest roller coaster was Zambezi Zinger, but it was still a distraction. We had no mics, so we had to shout. I remember being hoarse. Now, we have a much better sound system with head mics, but the Prowler is right there, and it is very loud,” Armato says. His current crew is about four guys, and they take turns being the robbers and the marshal. Another significant change involves the actual train robbing scenes between those robbers and the marshal. “Before, it was more Old West style, quick draw along the lines of Wyatt Earp or Jesse James, with someone faking getting shot and dying. Now, it is more hillbilly, Baldknobbers, 3 Stooges on steroids. No one gets shot, no one gets hurt. There is a warning shot to stop the train, but that’s about it. We do exaggerated

faces, silly things to get laughs. Also, it is more scripted and choreographed now. We had four days of rehearsal before the shows started. Before, we had no director and we just made it up as we went along,” Armato says. The first time, Armato was working with his friends, and says they are jealous of his new summer job now. He had good memories of those days as high school/college kid. “I sneakily took the blanks out of the sheriff’s gun, and when it came time for the shootout, he got blasted. We thought that was pretty funny, of course. During the last show of my first day ever in the summer of 1976, I shot myself in my leg. I was still learning how to quickly pull a gun from my holster. Anyway the blast blew a hole in my polyester pants and melted the pants to my leg. I bravely finished the show and then went to first aid where they took a brush and scrubbed out the black powder particles from my leg,” Armato says. Armato has been married for 25 years, with four kids and a two-month-old grandson. His grandson, Jack, is one of the many reasons he decided to write a book about his grandfather’s experiences during World War I. “His death in 1988 hit me hard. It was the catalyst that started me writing this book. Unless someone made the effort, stories like his weren’t going to get told. So I’ve worked on and off since then on this project. It’s the story of my grandfather who went to war at age 19. He had great stories to tell,” Armato says. It seems fitting that Armato enjoys the theater performance of the train robbing show; he has participated in military reenactments over the years, enjoys historical storytelling, and would often dress in costumes such as a pirate, a soldier or a preacher as part of his lessons for the 8th grade students through the years. “I just love American history,” Armato says. Have Wheels, Will Serve Wheelchair tennis comes to the Northland.

T

ARTICLE LISA ALLEN | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS WILLIAMS

here were fifteen participants at the first wheelchair tennis clinic at the Northland Racquet Club. Each came in at a different skill level and each was in a chair for a different reason. All of them had so much fun they stayed an extra hour to keep hitting balls. That was two years ago. This spring, Northland Racquet Club hosted the Wheel It Forward Wheelchair Tournament. Nineteen players came from as far as Washington, D.C. and Michigan to compete for monetary prizes totaling $4,000. “Wheelchair tennis is new in Kansas City,” says Alan Klaus, tournament coordinator, “but it started in the 1970s and there are more than 100 tournaments across the country.” Wheelchair tennis started in a rehabilitation center in California in 1976. Brad Parks, a former skier who had been paralyzed in an accident, met Jeff Minnebraker, his new recreational therapist, who had been injured in a car accident and had designed a lighter chair specifically for tennis. Parks and Minnebraker went into business together, selling the chairs, and as word began to spread about the chair and the sport, Parks started the National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis and the Wheelchair Tennis Players Association.

24

Northland Lifestyle | July 2015

Randy Snow, one of two wheelchair players in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, helped popularize the game in the states and won the wheelchair tennis national title at the U.S. Open ten times. Jean-Pierre Limborg built the game in his native France and then around the world. And Esther Vergeer of Holland won 42 Grand Slam titles, was ranked number one for 14 consecutive years, and won her last 470 matches. She remains one of the most dominant athletes in history and is the most famous wheelchair player of all time. Jim Pfeffer, co-founder of Wheel It Forward, became involved at the suggestion of the United States Tennis Association two years ago. “Being in a chair isn’t just physical,” says Pfeffer. “The effects of being in a chair are mental, emotional, and spiritual. Wheelchair tennis opens up a new area of alternative recreation that many thought would never be available to them.” Jack Spicer, a wheelchair tennis participant, suffers from muscle atrophy and thought he’d never play tennis again. Klaus encouraged him to try playing from a chair; Spicer calls it a “major boon” because it gave him back the joy he used to find in sports that he thought he’d never experience again.

“It’s really something,” says Spicer, “and the only way this could have happened was for me to play out of a chair. It’s an eye-opener, to see the motivation that it takes for these people to play.” Klaus shares stories of a few Wheel It Forward participants, including Katie Garcia, who was dealing with isolation and depression; participating in wheelchair tennis turned her life around. There’s Brian McMillan, who’s been in a chair for the past fifteen years. He was a former tennis player at the club; Pfeffer went looking for him when wheelchair tennis became an option at the club, left messages at prior phone numbers, and eventually tracked him down and invited him to play. “At first,” says Pfeffer, “he said there was no way he’d play because he thought he’d look like a fool. He intentionally came thirty minutes late one day, to watch, and we got him on the court. He said it was the first time he felt that sweet spot of the racquet just like he had before, and he knew it was time.” Glenn has multiple sclerosis and could barely open his hand; now he can toss a ball up in the air. His mom comments about his coordination and ability to hit the ball; neither of them thought it would ever happen. “There’s a camaraderie here, just like in any other sport, but even better,” says Klaus. “We all have what we have to deal with,” says Spicer. “This is our respite. It’s our time with others who understand the rigors of our reality, and it’s an inspiring thing, to see someone triumph in a way they never thought they could. And the smiles! Seeing them smile when they’re out there is what it’s all about.”

The monetary reward of competing is also a draw. “The competitors train to come to the tournament, which is a tangible goal that drives them for months," Klaus says. "The fact that there’s some prize money helps, too.” Every participant wins at least $50 and admission to a banquet. Organizers also negotiate discounted hotel rooms and other perks. “Traveling with chairs is expensive,” says Klaus. “Plus there’s the hassle of getting from where they are to here with their chair. The money is a fun incentive and it stokes their motivation.” To date Wheel It Forward has relied on the generosity of others and grant money to expand. Jason Grubb, general manager, donates court time for practices and clinics. Spicer reached out to former professional contacts to solicit donations and support. One member bought a sport chair and the group was able to purchase two more chairs through a United States Tennis Association grant. “The goal is to have more corporate sponsors, like Fed Ex Ground who sponsored this year, as we go forward,” says Klaus. “It’s an important event because everyone can play, regardless of mobility issues. It’s truly open to all skill levels and to everyone who wants to play.” “Everyone finds it inspirational,” says Spicer, “and everyone who watches or participates sees the happiness and achievement that the players feel when they’re out there.” To learn more visit WheelItForward.org or call Jack Spicer at 816.547.0493 or Northland Racquet Club at 816.842.8811. Funky Monkey Corn Company Pops Up Fun Snack Food ARTICLE PETE DULIN | PHOTOGRAPHY JOEL SCHNEIDER

T

he familiar scent of flavored popcorn is both unmistakeable and expected at Funky Monkey Corn Company, a gourmet popcorn business that opened last December. Kim Gasperi, who owns and operates the Gladstone business, has introduced some modern touches to the comfort snack food that many people mostly enjoy during the holidays. Gasperi opened a popcorn-based business because it is a healthy comfort food that is naturally gluten- and nut-free, making it accessible to people of all ages and diets. “Popcorn is also associated with Kim Gasperi and husband Stephen, great memories,” she says. After with the store mascot, Ivan. all, popcorn is connected to the movies and holidays as fun experiences. “Popcorn is also versatile and fun to work with.” Funky Monkey makes and stocks on-site more than 15 naturally-flavored popcorns year-round. In addition to caramel and hot cinnamon, flavors include roasted jalapeno cheddar, smoked cheddar, cotton candy, dark chocolate with cheddar cheese, and fruity, rainbow-colored Monkey Mix. Gasperi will introduce several more flavors over the summer. Gasperi is serious about the tagline – You pick it. We pop it. – for her business with a light-hearted name. Customer input is important. For example, Funky Monkey proposed and presented six flavors to members of City Hall. That group narrowed the choices to their three most popular options. Funky Monkey then invited the public to vote from May 1 to 22 on which flavor to make. Approximately 850 votes were entered at the shop, via the shop’s website and even by telephone. 26

Northland Lifestyle | July 2015

“Downtown Delight, our Linden Square f lavor, was selected,” says Gasperi. “The choice was hot cinnamon dusted with sharp cheddar cheese.” Gasperi will propose several seasonal flavors for public voting four to five times per year and encourage community participation. The popcorn maker uses only non-genetically modified corn and natural ingredients. “We use naturally-flavored oils when we can,” says Gasperi. “We make savory flavors in-house.” Funky Monkey is also collaborating with nearby coffeeshop Head Rush to create Monkey Rush, a coffee-flavored popcorn. The shop also develops flavors and colors for customers with 24-48 hours advance notice. “We make custom orders for weddings, graduations and other events,” says Gasperi. Black is the only color not available. “We produce custom orders in 5, 10 and 20-gallon sizes. Gasperi, a former court reporter and environmental scientist by training, places high value on the environment and Northland community where she lives, works and plays with her husband and two daughters. She operates Funky Monkey as a “green” business. For instance, she knew that tins were standard for storing flavored popcorn, but the containers were not environmentally-friendly for disposal. Instead, Gasperi opted for recycled cardboard wine boxes that can be reused and recycled. Many fixtures and decorative items in the store were recycled from other materials. lation of a gorilla dubbed “Man of the Forest,” made by local artist Wes Casey, is made from recycled, rusted metal. Even the store mascot Ivan, a smile-inducing statue of a monkey originally from Jamaica, has found a new home. Funky Monkey’s sweetened popcorn debris left after production is saved and shipped to a local farm to fatten cattle. Unpopped corn kernels and unsweetened bits of popcorn are packaged and sold as bird food. “We’re a zero-waste business,” says Gasperi. “We’re probably the single-most sustainable business in the Northland. It’s very gratifying.” When asked about the business name, Gasperi smiles and explains, “We came up with the name as a family. We wanted a name that would make you smile no matter what your mood.” As steady demand for its popcorn grows, Gasperi’s Funky Monkey Corn Company is wildly pleased to settle into its suburban home and help make the community a happier place. veryone has some form of artistic ability. Many never develop what could be a life-changing gift. Dare to Dabble in North Kansas City is offering classes for all levels of artistry. This is your chance to develop that hidden talent. Sheryl Godsy and Erin Rosales, co-owners of this unique business, worked to develop a concept that allows people to unleash their creativity. “Anyone can come here and try different mediums of art,” Godsy says. We have open studio space set up with a variety of projects with tools, raw materials and a little bit of guidance.” Dare to Dabble is filled with painting supplies, items for embroidering, decoupage and mosaic with glass and ceramic tile. Customers learn how to recycle trash into unique objects; a bowling ball becomes a garden gazing ball and a picture is created from an old phone book. Rosales has an art degree from U.M.K.C. and loves the opportunity to teach. “Art education in schools is not what it used to be,” Rosales says. “The funding is no longer there. So we teach all different levels here. I love teaching all different aged people art. We made a big investment in materials to allow people to explore their artistic side. Our young students have an art club where different ages may enroll. Several of our projects allow them to decorate items for their rooms at home. and create a large paper maché mask. We have a watercolor drawing camp, too.” Some just stop in for a cup of coffee and snack at the Luna Coffee Shop. “Our coffee house features Roasterie coffee and snacks from local bakeries,” Rosales says. “We included our coffee shop to give parents a place to hang out while their kids do art projects. Some people spend a lot of time here, perhaps up to four hours creating a piece of art and they enjoy coffee while creating.” Additional artists have been brought in to teach classes. A silk screening artist is teaching classes and a former Hallmark artist will soon teach embroidery in an effort to offer more types of art training. Godsy and Rosales have developed new programs to peak more interest. “We have an interesting program called ‘Drink and Dabble’,” Godsy says. “Learn how to paint with acrylics on a 16” x 20” canvas for $30 per person – includes all supplies with step by step instruction for that evening’s painting. Fun begins at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. This is a social art experience on a Friday and Saturday night. We have groups of single ladies every month enjoying a fun evening. The cost includes all art supplies and wine is for sale in the coffee shop.” For more information about Dare to Dabble, call: 816.421.1025 or check their web site at: DareToDabble.com for upcoming events.

Rugged Maniac Race Returns to Snow Creek

GET READY TO RUN, JUMP, CLIMB AND CRAWL IN THIS OBSTACLE 5K ARTICLE RACHEL MURPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

F

or the past few years, the term 'extreme athlete' has meant a couple of different things. Sure, you have your snowboarders, base jumpers and ultra marathoners. But now, your regular joe has the chance to hit the obstacle course and test his or her mettle against the elements and the clock with the Rugged Maniac 5K, taking place on August 8 at the Snow Creek Ski Area. The event is more than just a race, according to Chief Operating Officer Rob Dickens. "Rugged Maniac is about getting people off their couches and outside, being physical and getting exercise but also to have fun and socialize with their friends. Not everyone wants to go to the gym and spend hours on the treadmill or run down the sidewalk for miles. They want some entertainment with their exercise," says Dickens. The race involves roughly 25 obstacles including fire, mud, trampolines and a 50-foot water slide. For all of this and the inclusion of 5k of space to run, the right setting is integral to the success of the race. Snow Creek Ski Area in Weston provides the perfect backdrop. "We've had the race at Snow Creek for three years now. It's difficult to find a big enough venue with interesting enough terrain in the city. We generally have to go outside the city to find the space and Snow Creek is exactly what we are looking for. We are excited to use that location for many years to come," says Dickens. In addition to the race itself, the event evolves into a festival for all of the attendees and observers. A DJ spins all day as 300-person heats leave every 15 minutes. Throughout the day, other events occur, from pie eating to mechanical bulls to bounce houses and lots of food and beer available for purchase. One free beer is included in every registration. The race has a charity partner in the USO, supporting the troops. The event is free to the public that wants to join in the festivities, cheer on the racers and enjoy a day in the outdoors.

Northland Lifestyle | July 2015

Dickens says that people of all shapes and sizes are welcome and encouraged to participate. "This is not an event that is attended by only hard-core athletes. There are some of those people there, but it's geared toward everyone. If you're going to train for this race for time, train as if you're simply running a fast 5k and then throw in some cross training. You want to throw in some strength training to incorporate some upper body strength since you'll be hanging and climbing things as well," says Dickens. The race is really a way to recapture the energy and fun of playing outside, according to Dickens and the idea is catching on. In fact, on an episode of this season's Shark Tank, Mark Cuban invested $175 million in the company's future. For more information or to sign up for the race, visit RuggedManiac.com or find them on Facebook.

*APR = ANNUAL PERCENTAGE RATE. PROMOTIONAL OFFER IS AVAILABLE THROUGH JULY 31, 2015. The introductory APR of 2.75% is available on new home equity lines of credit (HELOC) only with a combined loan-to-value (LTV) ratio of 90% or less. This limited time offer is not available to refinance an existing BankLiberty HELOC. The initial 2.75% APR is fixed for six months from the date of loan closing and is not based on an index and margin used in the subsequent variable rate feature. At the conclusion of the six month period, the rate becomes a variable rate and is subject to changes in the “index”. Our index is the Prime Rate, which is found in the “Money Rates” column of The Wall Street Journal and is 3.25%, as of June 11, 2015. Using that as the basis, the estimated variable rate could be: LTV (80% or less) = Prime + 1.00 (4.25% APR). LTV (81 – 90%) = Prime + 2.00 (5.25% APR). The variable rate can change monthly, but will not exceed 18.00% APR during the loan term. BankLiberty requires a minimum HELOC loan amount of $5,000.00 with a maximum amount of $200,000.00. A security interest is taken in the borrower’s principal residence and hazard insurance is required on the property. Hands-On Learning Opportunities Abound at Paradise Park ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY PARADISE PARK

T

eachers and home educators seeking top-notch, hands-on learning field trips to support your academic goals and excite your students: look no further. Every child wants to go to Paradise Park. They know it’s their kind of place filled with fun and adventure; every detail invites play, imagination and freedom to be a kid. Combine this atmosphere with excellent educational offerings and you’ve got a recipe for an academically successful field trip that kids will not only learn from but also have lots of fun doing. “Field trips are often the highlight of a students’ year and creating a trip that both invigorates students and stimulates knowledge is challenging,” says Naomi Burwell who designs field trip curriculum for Paradise Park. The adventure park may be known for its bumper cars, go carts, miniature golf and arcade, but did you know it also has provided substantial educational field trip opportunities for more than 11,000 students? Paradise Park offers 21 field trip experiences, with six to 10 lessons within each topic, including Alphabet Mania, Math Counts and Nutrition Adventure. Many subjects offered are the challenging, least favorite or most cost prohibitive in the classroom such as Hunting Geometry, Matter Matters: States and Density. The format includes four, 15-minute activities in one hour of education, and one hour of exploration and play. And it’s not just for little kids; Paradise Park offers topics for preschool through 8th grade. “Our goal is to make academic subjects that kids read about in their textbooks real and teach them how they apply them in their lives,” says Burwell. These experts in “all things fun” actually have a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge behind what they do for kids and families. The field trip offerings include detailed curriculum meticulously

developed with care by Burwell, a retired teacher herself with 31 years experience. She has not only taught science and physical education to elementary students; she has taught future educators how to teach chemistry and physics at Central Missouri State and Rockhurst. Burwell writes, creates worksheets and builds the materials for all of Paradise Park’s field trips, and makes sure that the curriculum meets state standards. Burwell has a passion for facts and accuracy and so provides detailed scripts for each lesson to ensure what is taught is factual. She also consults with other former teachers with equal amounts of experience who evaluate the program’s strengths and weaknesses and assess age-level effectiveness. “A lot of my inspiration comes from what I remember as being fun when I was a kid,” Burwell says. “Even as a child I was inquisitive, always wanting to know ‘why’ and ‘what if.’” Those memories combined with her experience in the classroom results in extraordinarily fun experiences for students to learn science, history, math and much more, including things like tug o’ war with pulleys to teach a lesson in force. “Even the littlest child can pull six of his buddies with his finger because he has the strength needed with the help of the pulleys,” Burwell says. What kid wouldn’t remember that science lesson? “We offer totally student hands-on activities,” Burwell says. “They do not sit and watch, they are doing something all the time.” Research supports that “hands-on learning” has tremendous benefits to the learning process for kids. This includes increased learning, motivation, enjoyment, skill development, thinking and decision making, creativity and perception. Paradise Park’s field trip curriculum is entirely experiential and engages children in observing, investigating and understanding experiences in a fun environment. Having an experience with a subject helps

students to remember the experience rather than memorize what someone says about it. “Hands-on learning is much more fun than someone telling you what to do,” says Burwell. “It helps them take ownership of what they’re learning.” Many of the programs are science related because of her background as a science teacher. “Force and Motion” is their most popular field trip. “It is easy to adapt to elementary or middle schoolers and is a favorite of homeschoolers because of the effectiveness of the topic for a variety of ages,” says Burwell. “We are able to bring in things students aren’t normally able to experience in the classroom,” says Burwell. “We graph a rock wall, explore balanced and unbalanced forces (Newton’s First Law of Motion), draw a grid map of the rock wall using the exact same things Christopher Columbus or Marco Polo would use.” Twelve retired teachers with 30 years experience or more comprise the staff that instructs every lesson. “All of our teachers love to teach,” says Burwell. “They are amazing, talented teachers who are experts at techniques. I have three exceptional gals who know every kiddo’s name by the end of their 15 minute lesson.” The facilities are immaculately clean and safe with a staffed gate area especially helpful for younger children. Burwell collaborates with educators to customize the field trips to meet exactly what teachers are looking for. “When we create the field trip for our clients, we are very conscious of what the curriculum demands are,” Burwell says. “For instance, if they are doing addition with three numbers, we might make cookies in the kitchen adding together sets of three ingredients.” The field trip can reinforce what a teacher has already taught, introduce what is going to be taught or be a culmination of what has already been covered. “One of the things we do that’s kind of unique is you don’t have to stick to one topic,” Burwell says. That means the four different lessons can be related or completely unrelated.

Thinking About Conceal and Carry?

A TEACHER’S PERSPECTIVE MARY LAMMERS, DIRECTOR, ST. MATTHEW PRESCHOOL ST. MATTHEW PRESCHOOL HAS TAKEN FIELD TRIPS TO PARADISE PARK FOR EIGHT YEARS. NL: WHY DO YOU BRING YOUR KIDS TO PARADISE PARK FOR FIELD TRIPS? ML: Paradise Park is a unique opportunity for the children to

play and learn at the same time on a larger scale than we do at school. It also gives the teachers the opportunity to observe their classes in a different and larger setting; helping to prepare those going to kindergarten for larger spaces and more people. NL: WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST? ML: Some of the children go with their parents on a

regular basis, but going with their classmates gives a different dynamic to the trip. NL: HOW DO YOUR KIDS FEEL ABOUT PARADISE PARK FIELD TRIPS? ML: The children absolutely love going and have so much fun. We take lots of pictures and the children enjoy looking at them and remembering what they did. NL: HOW DOES THE VALUE COMPARE WITH THE PRICE? ML: The cost is reasonable for all that is offered at Paradise Park.

The trips are the favorite of the parents and the children. When I talk with prospective families for the school, they are always excited to hear that their child will be going to Paradise Park. Burwell encourages teachers to call and dream with her about a field trip for their students. All the details about lesson topics, pricing and contact information is available at their website, Paradise-Park.com, or by calling 816.246.5224.

Parting Thoughts

The Rest of the Story WORDS RACHEL C. MURPHY

I

am, I recently learned, a part of the ‘Oregon Trail Generation.’ I remember the onset of technology as we know it. I remember the creaky sound of dial-up when we thought nothing of waiting for 3-5 minutes for a webpage to load. That was simply part of the process— waiting for the information to reveal itself. I’m also probably one of the last generations to remember the days of the radio show. Now NPR continues the grand tradition, and I still listen, but it’s still not the same as the grandmaster of the radio—Paul Harvey. His voice used to sound like honey, slowly dripping from one point to another. It crinkled with age 25 years ago. Saturday afternoons in the car with Dad meant the pregnant pause of the Paul Harvey Radio Show. Despite growing up in the eighties, well outside the boom of the radio show, I've always loved the protracted yet succinct manner of story telling that Paul Harvey continued past its popularity. Paul didn't report the news, not in the sense that we would think of it now. There was no ticker tape scroll of bite-sized information. Paul cut you a slice of the pie, told you to take a bite and then gave you the recipe. It was listening to his show that I first discovered the concept that information was important just because it was interesting, not because you would be tested. My parents always stressed this, but the unspoken endorsement from Paul first reiterated it.

Paul told stories that had little relevancy to the stock market, or baseball scores or the weather. He told true stories about real people, doing extraordinary things. His pauses so thoughtfully punctuated the information that a sentence didn't seem complete without one. He was an elocutionist for the modern era, interpreting instead of telling. I'm sure that my memories of his show are clouded by nostalgia but I still cherish the thought of sitting in a baking car in the dead of a sweltering Kansas City summer, waiting in the driveway for the conclusion of another tale. As he drew out his sentence, sweat would trickle down our backs in our un-air conditioned car and we would wait to move until we heard. . . . the rest of the story. Paul taught me at that tender age that the rest was interesting. It was valid. It was what made the action happen. It's in the rest of the story that you find the people and their motivations. The rest IS the story. Paul Harvey passed away six years ago now and with him, ended an era of not only radio, but of dedication to the space between the lines. So Paul, thanks for the telling the stories--all of them. I hope the rest is as good as you hoped.
