Back to School

T

hat time of year has come again where mornings begin early, everyone in the house is in a rush to get out the door, and the school bus only waits a few minutes for your kids to arrive before taking off without them. Yes, summer is over and school is starting, but the new school year brings opportunities for students of all ages to reach new goals and shine bright in their community.

School can be a busy time where homework and studying for tests is often a daily chore, but Scottsdale offers many amazing after school programs to enrich the lives of your students and help them break away from the seriousness of school. From karate and YMCA to chess and more, there is an after school program for every. We’ve included some of them to get you thinking this month. There’s nothing like history and architecture coming alive on a field trip, and at Taliesin West you’ll be treated to several types of tours of this desert treasure Frank Lloyd Wright himself established here in our hometown. It’s a great place for both children and adults of all ages. And as my husband and I are about to join the world of parenting, I’ve been exploring the possibilities for professional photographers to capture our first family photo after our little girl arrives at the end of the month. Even though we have the convenience of owning our own high quality cameras, our photos often lack the luster that we hope to capture. Sometimes it’s worth spending the money on professional photographers for that perfect portrait; their lighting and equipment expertise create something special we often can’t achieve on our own. We’ve got some great advice on this as you may want to consider your annual family photograph. Discover how easy it can be for your kids and even yourself to eat healthy during the school year. Avoid those cafeteria foods and choose whole foods and snacks packed from home. These nutritious foods are sure to set you up for success in the office and in the classroom.

It’s an exciting month, a new baby for my husband and I, and the start to a school year full of new goals and opportunities for students of all ages. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West Take a tour of this local treasure Article Kory Kilmer | Photography Andrew Pielage

T

he architecture and influence of Frank Lloyd Wright can be seen across the valley. And with the impending 50th anniversary of one of his most celebrated local works – ASU’s Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium – there is no time like the present to brush up on how Scottsdale became his home away from home. In 1927, Wright was invited by a former student out to Arizona to assist him on what would become the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. He accepted, and though his original plans were viewed as a bit too unique and extreme, and after alterations and compromise, the resulting property went on to win numerous awards and resides today as “the only existing hotel in the world with a Frank Lloyd Wright-inf luenced design.” Wright returned to Taliesin, his home in Spring Green, Wisconsin. By 1932 he had directed his attention to the establishment of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and the Taliesin Fellowship, through

12 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | August 2014

which he sought to provide a total learning environment geared toward creating a generation of responsible, creative and cultured human beings through hands-on experience of architecture, construction, farming, cooking, nature and the arts. The harsh Wisconsin winters were not conducive to the yearround interactions with nature that Wright sought in his programs, and after returning numerous times to southern Arizona, he found a location on which he could build a desert masterpiece. In his autobiography, Wright describes his find. Finally I learned of a site 26 miles from Phoenix, across the desert of the vast Paradise Valley. On up to a great mesa in the mountains. On the mesa just below Mcdowell Peak we stopped, turned and looked around. The top of the world. The design of Taliesin West was a collaboration of Wright with his students. Construction of the complex began in 1937, when Wright celebrated his 70th birthday, and he continued to tinker with it until his death in 1959. In that time Wright designed many structures from his desert studio, including New York’s Guggenheim Museum and the aforementioned Gammage Auditorium, which was initially designed to be an opera house in Baghdad, Iraq, but was instead built for ASU after political unrest cancelled the initial project.

Wright continually sought his greatest inspiration in nature (a word he insisted on spelling with a capital “N”), which is evident in the entirety of Taliesin West. Local rocks are embedded in the masonry walls of the buildings to help blend with the landscape, and canvas roofs attached to wooden beams helped to ease the intensity of the desert sun while still allowing for an abundance of natural light. Even the buildings were arranged and connected by various walkways, terraces, water-features and gardens which aided to feeling Taliesin West was destined to be part of surrounding landscape. Today, Taliesin West sits on more than 600 acres, and is home to both the main campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture as well as the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. More than 100,000 visitors choose one of the many seasonal tours that are offered to view the site, including: PANORAMA tour - The beauty of Taliesin West’s terraces, gardens and walkways are on full display with visits to the Cabaret Theater, Music Pavilion and Wright’s private office.

INSIGHTS tour - An enhanced PANORAMA tour with special trips into Wrights’ living quarters and the famous Taliesin West “Garden Room.” NIGHT LIGHTS tour - This special evening tour highlights the brilliance of Wright’s desert masterpiece as it glows like a jewel spotlighted by the bright Arizona moon. BEHIND THE SCENES tour - This is for serious architectural enthusiasts, and includes a stop in the colorful Taliesin Fellowship Dining Room for a cup of mid-morning tea. JUNIOR ARCHITECT tour - A guided tour of the beautiful desert trails around Taliesin West where guests will gain an understanding of how Wright and his apprentices used the natural materials found in the desert to build the facility. Taliesin West is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Tours start at $24 and range anywhere from one to three hours. Reservations are highly encouraged as tours can sell out. Additional information, as well as to make reservations online, can be found at FrankLloydWright.org.

Back to School Clothing Drive New Clothes Mean New Beginnings for Students Article Michelle Guerrero | Photography Provided

W

hen I was a kid, my mom would take me back-to-school clothes shopping every August. There was always something special about getting new shoes and clothes before the school year began. It wasn’t just a pair of jeans or a t-shirt she was buying me, it was a fresh start in the form of denim and cotton. Kids are ever changing, and it felt like an opportunity to transform for the new school year. I was a fortunate kid. Not all kids are so lucky to be given a shopping spree before school starts. Not every kid walks to school wearing new shoes on their feet, and a bag filled with school supplies on their back. However, there is a nonprofit organization called Back to School Clothing Drive (BTSCD) that strives to give every kid that fresh start for the school year. Each year the program helps more than 25,000 K-6 grade elementary school children who attend Title 1 public elementary schools. Their reach is far, impacting children in 250 schools, across 40 school districts, throughout the Valley and Northern Arizona. During their summer “New Clothes, New Beginnings” annual distribution event, more than 10,000 children receive nearly $2 million in new school clothing, supplies, backpacks and dental hygiene items. Each child receives about $300 of clothing and supplies. 14 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | August 2014

“Once a child came to the event we held and we were giving out dental hygiene bags. He opened it and said he finally had his very own toothbrush and wouldn’t have to share one with his brother anymore,” says Karl Gentles, executive director of BTSCD. Children who benefit from the “New Clothes, New Beginnings” event are the highest-need children from each school and are pre-registered and selected by their school’s parent coordinator, social worker or school nurse. Parents can also request support directly through the school. BTSCD does not directly serve the public. One aspect that makes this program unique is that the children are all given new clothing and shoes that have been purchased, meaning nothing is second-hand. During the week-long event, the children are matched with a personal shopper that helps them pick their clothes, shoes and supplies. “People can support us a couple of ways,” says Gentles. “The most direct way is by making a financial contribution through our website. Also, organizations can hold a drive for us. We gear up for next year’s activity right away.” This is a program truly embraced by the community. Although they purchase the clothing through fundraising, many compa-

nies hold school supply drives, businesses such as Intel, located in Chandler. Bank of America does a Valley-wide drive in all of their banking centers. The National Charity League Scottsdale Chapter, Boys Team Charity Scottsdale and Notre Dame Preparatory School are huge supporters as well. Financial donations made to the program are eligible for the AZ Charitable Tax Credit. The program is also supported by the BHHS Legacy Foundation. They match dollar for dollar when donations for the program filter through them. BTSCD has two other programs in addition to “New Clothes, New Beginnings.” One is Stitches-of-Love and the other is The Stardust Student Attire for Education Matching Grant and Online Retail Store Program (SAFE). Stitches-of-Love consists of a strong team of 400 seamstresses who create a handmade item for each child. The roots of this program dates back 47 years. The SAFE program, created by Jerry Bisgrove and managed by BTSCD for the past 10 plus years, promotes and encourages the implementation of school uniforms to help increase school success. The program has a rich history that began in 1967 when the Salt River flooded, washing out many of the migrant camps located along the riverbank. A group of women banded together to raise money to supply back-to-school clothes for the children of the migrant families. That first year they provided 871 children with clothing. This year, they are providing about 25,000 children with clothing. Gentles recalled another child who attended one of their events. He came with clothing in a bag that he received the year before. Since he outgrew them, he thought another child could benefit from them. Not only are these youngsters benefiting from the program, they are clearly learning about the power of giving. A $25 donation purchases two backpacks. Five new pairs of pants cost $50. Twenty new pairs of sneakers cost $250. The sense of pride the children have when wearing their new clothes and sneakers on the first day of school: priceless. To learn more about this program, visit BTSCD.com. Summit Diner Anytime is the Right Time To Order Anything Article Kathleen Blair | Photography Provided

hen I was growing up, there was a old diner in my home town. The architecture then was completely different from what you see today. Back in the early 1900s when diners were making their debut, a diner was a prefabricated restaurant that was symbolic to the American life. It originated out of the lunch wagon concept and most had an exterior of a layer of stainless steel. The term diner describes a restaurant that offers a wide range of foods, mostly American favorites, a casual atmosphere and late hours. Also, in a classic diner, there is a long counter where patrons can eat. So, when I pulled up to the Summit Diner, located in North Scottsdale, I saw a diner that represents the newer era. Owner and Chef Joe Kapidani opened the restaurant in October 2012. His passion for cooking a variety of items made this the perfect type of restaurant for his homemade specialties. The interior is nice, clean and comfortable. A long eating counter sits 13 and has two TV’s for catching the news or watching a game. The restaurant itself sits 140, which includes a nice size, dog-friendly patio.

borhood favorite with many regulars. It is a great location for families who may want a hearty meal for the dad; a seafood entrée or a delicious salad for the mom and a burger and fries for the children. With an extensive menu and reasonable prices, it’s a perfect place to eat. “The success of my business is the good team of people I’ve put together,” states Kapidani. “The wait team brings the friendly, homey feeling to our customers and the kitchen team, which includes chefs Antonio and Tony, are responsible for preparing a variety of cuisines from scratch to table.” Breakfast Served All Day

I was very impressed by the extensive breakfast menu. Most of us who work do not typically eat a large breakfast since we usually grab something quick and easy before we run out the door. So being able to order breakfast throughout the day makes all the more reason to stop at the Summit Diner. The menu includes breakfast sandwiches, burritos, skillets, scrambles, eggs benedict, omelets, French crepes, French toast, pancakes, a Nova Lox platter, yogurt and fruit bowls. In addition there is corn beef hash, country friend steak, bacon, ham, sausage, turkey sausage, biscuit and gravy, muffins, cinnamon rolls and bagels. With such a selection, it was hard to decide what breakfast to try. I chose the turkey and avocado eggs benedict and wasn’t disappointed. The creamy, homemade hollandaise sauce served on top of the stack of fresh turkey, avocado and egg made every bite a good one.

Where Everyone is Treated Like Family

People enjoy going to a business, a restaurant or retail store where they will be greeted by name and servers know what they like. This reminds me of the old television sitcom, “Cheers.” But instead of it being a neighborhood bar, we have a neighborhood diner that also has a full bar, where everyone knows your name. In a short time, the Summit Diner has built a reputation for serving good comfort food, making it a neigh16 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | August 2014

Healthy Dishes

The Summit Diner serves many favorite comfort foods not typically found on restaurant menus. The meat loaf and liver and onions have people driving a distance just to enjoy them. A few of the popular items include the Rueben, the chicken salad sandwich, the gyro sandwich and the cheeseburger. In addition, other sandwiches available are deli style, grilled,

pita wraps, hot open face and a variety of burgers. There are Mexican, Italian and seafood items on the menu plus seven fresh salads served with a selection of homemade dressings. Also, you may want to make a mental note that Friday is all-you-can-eat fish and chips day. With four soups on the menu, I decided on the homemade black bean soup and found it very tasty, with just a hint of spiciness. The other two soups offered are the chicken noodle and the tomato basil. The fourth soup selection changes daily and may include the clam chowder, beef vegetable, cream of corn or another homemade selection. From the summer menu which offers lighter, seasonal items, I enjoyed the fresh Alaskan salmon that was charbroiled and served on a corn cake with mango salsa and asparagus. This generous portion of salmon was moist and flakey. And, for anyone who may have a special food need, there are vegetarian and gluten-free items as well. Be sure to save room for desserts which include the Summit Nutela crepes, cannolis, baklava, chocolate cake, rice pudding and the American favorite, homemade apple pie. Fountain service includes smoothes, malts and shakes. The Summit Diner has a newer look for diners but it offers good food prepared with a high quality using fresh ingredients from local farm and markets, all natural meats, breads from local bakeries and fresh, ROC2 organic coffee from the Roastery of Cave Creek. Be sure to ask about their VIP Club which presently has 3,400 members who receive special discounts and gift certificates on their birthday and anniversary. 5 Back to School Nutrition Tips Healthy Ideas for Hectic Households

W

hether your kid is starting kindergarten or you’re back in the office, these five simple tips can help you and your family eat nutritious and delicious foods throughout the school year. Although it might be easier to let the kiddos eat at school, cafeteria meals are often loaded with refined carbohydrates and lack vital nutrients that homemade whole food snacks and meals can provide. Not only do the kids benefit from foods packed from home, but having a brown bag yourself can help you resist the temptation for soda, choco-lattes, donuts, pizza, candy and other office junk food. The good news is, with a little planning and some preparation, you can learn to juggle a hectic schedule without compromising your family’s health or packing on the pounds. 1. Choose Whole Foods

No matter how you spend your day, strive for natural whole foods over man-made, processed products. Whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, meats, poultry and fish are high in nutrients that support your health. In contrast, processed products, such as crackers, chips, cookies, snack bars, pretzels, and 100-calorie packs spike insulin levels and provide few nutrients. In general, the less refined a food is the more nutrients it contains. 2. Ask For Help

Let your spouse and kids help you create a grocery list, read food labels, plan a menu, find recipes, pack lunches and snacks, prepare a salad, wash vegetables, or do the dishes. With some family teamwork, it will be much easier for everyone to have fun eating healthy together. 3. Eat a Protein-Rich Breakfast

Although these might sound like “healthy” choices, processed breakfast foods such as cereal and lowfat milk, a bagel and low-fat cream cheese, or a muffin and juice are low in nutrients and can make you sluggish and sleepy. In contrast, breakfasts packed with protein wake you up and get you focused for an amazing day. The next time you have breakfast, think outside the cereal box and enjoy some muscle-building, brain-boosting 20 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | August 2014

protein-rich foods such as eggs, cottage cheese, meatballs or any leftover meat from last night’s dinner. 4. Pack Lunches and Snacks

Plan ahead by packing healthy snacks and a lunch from home so you’ve got something nutritious to eat throughout the day. Easy snacks to pack include: an apple and walnuts, almond butter and celery, carrots and hummus, yogurt and berries. Quick brown bags include: roast beef roll-ups, ham and apple stacks or pulled pork tacos. Boost nutrients by choosing greens such as spinach, arugula or broccoli, over grains such as bread, pasta and pizza. 5. Add Vegetables at Dinner

Dinner is the perfect opportunity to try new foods such as different vegetables. One easy way to incorporate more veggies into your meal is to start with a salad or nibble on raw veggies as an appetizer. Vegetables make a great addition to any meal. You can add a healthy fat to veggies to increase their nutritional value and add flavor. Try adding pastured butter to broiled asparagus or olive oil to sliced tomatoes. Aim for at least two cups of veggies at every meal.

All Schools Considered A Terrific Teacher with a Terrific Business Article Kory Kilmer | Photography Provided

W

ith a career that has spanned over two decades as an award-winning teacher, school administrator, and curriculum consultant, Elie Gaines has always been passionate about education. More importantly, however, she is also the parent of two. And though her children are now grown and pursuing their own dreams, Elie never forgot trying to navigate the vast array of options she faced when trying to decide on just what school environment would best fit their individual interests and needs. Later, while principal of an elementary school and assisting a family trying to decide where to send their child to middle school, Elie made the connection that her experience as both and educator and a parent gave her a unique perspective that could help families across Arizona. “I reached a point where I was coming off of a year working under a grant,” she explains. “And though I could have continued, I kept thinking about this need in our community to help families identify the best school fit for their child and their family.” Elie chose the name All Schools Considered (ASC) for her business as she felt it perfectly embodied what she wanted to do. ASC was not going to be a consulting service that would compare just private schools. Rather, her company would take advantage of Arizona’s flexible open-enrollment laws and offer her clients a much more complete scope of options that in turn would enhance the opportunities for a perfect match. “We really keep the focus on the child and the family,” she explains. “We spend our time and get to know our clients, so then we can really look at and recommend all schools in our search- public districts, charter, private, parochial, and even the possibility of home schooling for those who have expressed that interest.” ASC offers two types of options for their clients, both encompassing an age range from preschool through 12th grade. First is a by-the-hour consulting service, which is primarily used by families who have a good idea of the direction in which they want to head but need a bit of assistance as they try to narrow down their search. 22 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | August 2014

The comprehensive school search is the other service offered by ASC in which they sit with the individual family and help to identify the criteria that will be important in helping to recognize which type of environment will allow not only the child to thrive, but also that is the right fit for the entire family. “I think that often families forget that when they put a child in a school that they also become a part of that school’s culture and lifestyle. They need to remember if they are going to be there for up to 13 years, it really is a big decision.” Though Elie is very proud to call Scottsdale home, the network of relationships she has created over the years enables ASC to offer their consulting services across the state. She is often asked to speak to parent and civic organizations, as well as other community outlets, in an effort to educate families on the importance of selecting the correct school for their children. With a business model as unique as ASC’s, however, Elie realizes that it is these relationships--with her clients, the schools, and the community at large--need to be the cornerstone for future success as she looks to grow her business throughout Arizona, and possibly someday, beyond it. “From a business perspective, I always follow-up with everyone, to see what worked and what didn’t work, and what might have been improved upon. But more importantly, I think about my families all the time and touch base with them often,” she adds. “Whether it is a transition from preschool to elementary, elementary to middle school, or middle school into high school, I will always reach out and see how things are going.” Anyone interested in finding out more about ASC, including a complete list of services, their blog, or contact information, can visit their website at AllSchoolsConsidered.com.

Candid Cameras Why Parents Should Leave it to the Pros to Get Those Picture Perfect Moments Article Rachel Hawkinson | Photography Provided

Y

ou’ve heard the theoretical question asked before: “If your house was on fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be?” Most of us would answer, “Our photo albums.” (or I suppose in this day and age, it would be “The laptop with the photos.”) So why is it some parents place such little value on investing in professional family photos? With the availability and affordability of DSLR cameras, it’s easy to think that anyone can pick up a camera and take amazing pictures. But there’s way more to it than that. Emily Bridgman, a professional photographer who specializes in lifestyle portrait photography, explains that the money you spend on a professional pays for the countless hours they spend mastering their camera, posing techniques, learning how to work with varieties of lighting, and how to bring out the best in their clients and make them look amazing under any circumstances. She warns people to not assume that their neighbor who just bought a nice camera can get the same results as a pro. “There is more to being a professional in any industry than simply owning the right tools,” Bridgman explains. “Owning an oven doesn’t make you an award-winning chef, and owning a wrench doesn’t make you a skilled mechanic.” “When it comes down to it, people want their families real moments documented, and that is an art,” agrees East Valley photographer Lindsi Luffman. “You would not want to hire the cheapest 24 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | August 2014

tattoo artist to do a piece for you, so why would you hire a cheapest photographer (artist)?” So how do parents find the perfect photographer to capture those precious moments? Jasmyn Anderson, another East Valley professional photographer, suggests doing a lot of research. “A seasoned photographer will have consistent looking images regardless of where the pictures were taken and who is in them,” she suggests. Bridgman agrees, noting that the images in the photographer’s gallery should match your preference in lighting and type of image captured, as well as represent that every session they shoot is as unique as the family that’s in it. And once you’ve found the perfect photographer to capture your family’s love and laughter, what can you do to make sure your children are ready for their close-up? Luffman suggests making sure your kids are well-fed, well-rested, and ready to have fun, while Anderson suggests being ready to just “go with the flow.” “I often tell my parents that I will do the work and they can sit back and relax,” she says, “and I will be sure to capture those special candid moments.” Emily Bridgman Photography - EmilyBridgmanPhotography.com Lindsi Rian Photography - LindsiRianPhotography.com Jasmyn Anderson Photography - AZAndersonPhotography.com

The Life of an Athlete Scottsdale Resident Stays True to His Love of the Sport Article Kathleen Shipman | Photography Provided

P

eter Ney has always lived a carefree lifestyle, finding his successes through travel and his many athletic talents. Now a teacher at Redfield Elementary in North Scottsdale, the passion he carries for sport is one that has never left. Ney has been able to combine these very different worlds with his positive outlook and commitment to still engaging in the activities he loves. He is and forever will be an athlete. Ney was born and raised here in Scottsdale. Although he may have grown up in the desert, Ney was destined to have a strong relationship with the water. He fondly remembers his dad, who was an athlete himself, teaching him about sailing at a very young age. Together they traveled all over the world on his sailboat. For Ney, these experiences led him to not only discover his gift for sailing, but also set the tone for the type of life he desired for the future. Ney’s natural athleticism didn’t stop at just sailing. In fact, he quickly found that he was also an excellent swimmer and runner, competing in his first triathlon at the age of 13. It was also during these adolescent years that he first ranked nationally in the two areas. When he entered high school, Ney first experienced the (very unfamiliar to Arizona) sport of windsurfing. On weekends, he and his friends would spontaneously drive to coastal destinations so that they could windsurf. “I couldn’t imagine a better way to live my life then to just pack up the car and leave,” says Ney. “We never really knew where we were going to end up.”

These years were some of the most memorable for Ney. During the summer and after high school, Ney took part in countless competitions all over the country, earning sponsors and awards for his tremendous abilities. The X games were some of his favorites, where he was named a finalist in windsurfing and also competed in the sailing events. This ultimately led him to join the Olympic Team for the sport of sailing. While the accomplishments made during these times were remarkable to say the least, for Ney, his greatest rewards were the actual adventures themselves. “It’s all about who you meet and how you treat people. Like I tell my kids, it’s not about the trophies or the medals; it’s all about the journey,” he says. Ney attended Arizona State University in the pursuit of higher education. While there, he joined the swimming and cross country track team, once again becoming nationally ranked in the two sports. Another achievement for Ney came when he finally graduated. He completed school with two bachelor’s degrees, a master’s, and also an aspiration to enter the field of teaching. Being one that could never keep his feet planted, Ney traveled all over the world, ultimately experiencing six out of the seven continents. He also lived in other parts of the country that were conducive to the sports he loved: Hood River, Oregon; Maui, Hawaii; and Long Beach, California, were just three of the memcontinued >

orable areas that Ney was proud to call home. It was while living in Long Beach that he met his wife and future mother of his children. She too shared Ney’s passion for the water, a champion swimmer herself. Together they had a great experience moving their family to Boise, Idaho. This is where Ney was able to get back into triathlon racing and even competed on the Felt Pro Team. Eventually, Ney and his family made the decision to move to North Scottsdale in order to be close to his parents. He happily took a position at Redfield Elementary teaching the 5th grade Gifted Comprehensive Program. Ney loves nothing more than inspiring his students with stories and words of encouragement. “I always tell them, ‘I just want you to be happy, successful, good people when you leave my classroom,” he says. “They know that they can do anything they want, and really have to enjoy it.” Ney also finds great pleasure in spending time with his own children, who have followed in his and his wife’s footsteps of athleticism. When he’s not enjoying his family, Ney competes in triathlons around the Valley. Just last year, he was ranked 20th in the nation and considered part of the USA team for the International Triathlon Union. His favorite part of it all is the instant camaraderie that is formed during these events. “I like to give people high fives out on the race course. I don’t really care who it is, if they’re out there enjoying it, I am stoked to be out there with them,” Ney says. Peter Ney has lived his life perusing opportunities that have been nothing less than extraordinary. Yet, it is his love of the sport, free spirit and continual optimism which are most incredible. “I have done a lot of stuff in my life. I don’t think it’s necessarily the product of me though, but the product of how I was raised, and all of the really cool people I’ve met, and never being afraid to take chances,” says Ney. “As long as I’m having fun with it, I’m going to just keep training and enjoy my fitness.”

Parting Thoughts

Wonder is the beginning of something new Words Michelle Guerrero

A

lthough it’s difficult to say goodbye to the freedom of summer, I’ve always loved getting ready for a new school year. As a kid, I like organizing my backpack with new school supplies. Freshly sharpened pencils, glue, crayons and notebooks: check! There was always a sense of wonder with the newness of the school year. What will this year be like? What will I learn? Who will I be friends with this year? Even when I was in college, there was something exciting about starting a new semester. There were new subjects to learn, different teachers to teach and a new schedule and rhythm. That new rhythm is so important. It shakes off the dust that slowly settles on one’s life after sitting still for too long. In college I would wonder what I would become, would I fulfill my dreams, what would I do in life. If you have children, you might still feel that excitement and new rhythm vicariously through them, but we should never stop feeling that sense wonder for ourselves. In the great words of Socrates, “Wisdom begins in wonder.” How does a person continue to find wonder in the world when they are no longer looking through the inexperienced eyes of a child? One way to continue is by not passing up the things you are passionate about. Have you always wanted to speak a foreign lan-

guage? Sign up for a night class. Have you always wanted to help build schools in Mexico? Start searching the internet for nonprofit organization or church that fits the bill. Have you always wanted to paint but there is always an excuse not too? Go pick up a cheap canvas and some inexpensive acrylics, you’ll never know what masterpiece you can create unless you try. Don’t be too busy to do what we use to do as children: dream. It takes a brave person to imagine a different future for oneself. It seems easier when we were children. There were lots of blank pages in our story to fill with color. But as adults, with so many colorful experiences dotting our book, it’s almost too easy to stop coloring. I challenge you to knock the dust off and begin a new “semester.” Continue to see everyday miracles in your life. Hang on to your childhood sense of wonder and remember, now is a great time to learn something new!
