Let’s Get Our
Fitness On…
CHECK OUT THE BRAND NEW LOCATION FOR PULSE FITNESS HEALTHY ACTIVITIES AROUND TOWN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY GREAT RECIPES TO CURB THOSE LATE NIGHT CRAVINGS
Editor's Letter
Let's Get Our Fitness On... I
was told at a young age that the way you feel about yourself is ultimately the way others will see you. That is something I have carried with me through life and I have experienced that my attitude, mind, emotions and view of myself are in direct reflection of my physical health. So to start out the year right we are making our January issue all about Health & Wellness. Whether you start this year out with a New Year’s resolution to get healthy or to just continue in your healthy lifestyle, we've got some great ways to get outdoors and get our fitness on. We also have some great recipes for the whole family and help to curb that late night chocolate fix without all the calories. Some fun events are going on around town this month. For starters there's the 44th annual Barrett-Jackson Car Auction, which is always a personal favorite for my dad and me. Then if you’re willing to travel a bit there's the 20th annual Glendale "Glitter and Glow" block party featuring hot air balloons and 500,000 twinkling lights with more than a dozen bands performing all genres of music. Are you looking for a great locally owned gym? Pulse Fitness is excited to announce a move to North Pima Rd next to CCV to expand there facility and team. I have personally used this gym with the help of their great personal trainers for the past year and they are absolutely amazing. Every workout is totally different, which helps people like me who need a new routine and challenge every time I go.

hen the Peaceful Warrior Martial Arts & Healing Center opened its doors in 2010, they knew they wanted to be more than just another karate school. Owners Richard Poage and Tiffany Richards wanted their school to also be a resource for the community and a place that could truly make an impact in areas that fell just out of the focus of other traditional martial arts institutions. Peaceful Warrior is proud to offer a one-of-a-kind ADD/ ADHD program that was designed in part by world-renowned psychologist Dr. Dan Short. The 90-day ME (Mental and Martial Enrichment) program focuses on the practice of martial arts with therapeutic techniques which when combined have demonstrated to help in improving mental focus, self-control, school performance and maintaining healthy relationships. One of the unique characteristics of the ME program is due to the fact that it teaches long-term skills and techniques for children to use. Peaceful Warrior requires the involvement of parents and guardians in each session, twice a week for three months. “We are the only martial arts school in the entire country that has this type of exclusive ADD/ADHD program,” explains Tiffany Richards. “A lot of parents have come to us looking for an alternative to medications for their children, something just more natural or holistic. What we teach parents and kids, both are able to take home. We have even built relationships with some of our student’s teachers, and have just gotten some amazing feedback.” With the announcements by Scottsdale school districts this academic year of early release on Wednesdays, Peaceful Warrior has also adapted their after-school program to help in assisting the needs of working parents. They offer transportation of students from their individual schools to the facility, and once there kids can take advantage of the state-of-the-art youth center, homework assistance, and of course, karate class, all before they are picked up and headed for home. “It is a great alternative to just going home to sit in front of the television and playing video games, and is less expensive than many of the clubs offered at the schools,” says Richards. Like many other martial arts schools, Peaceful Warrior separates their classes into child and adult age classifications. Yet they also offer a selection of family classes that keeps everyone involved and help solidify bonds through training. There is even a “Little Warriors” program for ages 3-6 to help build confidence and social skills early on, along with a great martial arts foundation that will pay off for years to come. Even through offering so many different programs and establishing so many relationships, Peaceful Warrior Martial Arts & Heal14

ing Center continues to look for ways to reach out and make an impression on the surrounding community. They hold quarterly street self-defense seminars for women and teenage girls, with a special emphasis on recent graduates who might be leaving home and living on their own for the first time. Physical fitness is also an emphasis for Peaceful Warrior and throughout the year they send their demonstration teams out to schools and get kids excited about breaking boards or kicking and punching dummy bags all while also teaching them the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. “We go out of our way to get to know all of our neighbors and frequent as many of the local businesses that we can” explains Richards. “At the end of every one of our tournaments one of the families will always host a party at their house. Neighbors come over, meet the other kids and their families, and it just ends up becoming our extended family. It is something unique to Scottsdale; people here are just very giving.” The Peaceful Warrior Martial Arts & Healing Center is located at 7830 E Redfield Road. Additional information, including dojo hours and class schedules can be obtained by calling 480.200.1187 or by visiting their website at PeacefulWarriorPHX.com.

A Different Kind of
Winter Wonderland ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY BRITTNEY OLSON
F
or decades now, residents and frequent visitors liked to pretend that Winter in Southern Arizona was our own little secret. While the rest of the country bundles up and prepares to shovel out from their impending Snowmageddon, Valley residents quietly enjoy their meals on heated patios, with little more than a light jacket or sweater to take the nip out of the air. But the fact of the matter is word about the
16

glory of Arizona winters has been out for a while, and people have definitely been listening. The population boom that came to define the Phoenix metro area in the latter-half of the 20th century was also accompanied by a rise in seasonal residents that came to bask in the desert sun during its milder months. Snowbirds have been an Arizona winter staple ever since, and though specific numbers are hard to come by, estimates have put the number of people that reside part time in the state well over 400,000. But whether you are here all year, part time, or just for a quick visit, winter in the Valley is just different, unique and unrivaled. For those who enjoy a bit more leisurely place for their outdoor adventures, the Sonoran Desert puts on a show just about year round. The desert encompasses seven climatic zones, which means something is almost always in bloom, but February and March are prime for strolling among wildflowers in full bloom.
Where to go might be the hardest question, as the metro area has a seemingly endless amount of city, regional, and state parks to explore. In terms of sheer size, in fact, three of them rank among the Top 25 in the world, including Phoenix’s South Mountain Park and North Mountain Preserve, as well as Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. “Winter and early spring are prime times for me to work with my clients and capture some really spectacular moments outside with the vibrancy of the desert as the backdrop,” explains Brittney Olson, who owns her own photography business, Shot With Charm. She is also the mother of a curious 3 year old and the pair like to make their own family memories exploring some of the cities local hiking trails. “We do Cholla Trail on Camelback Mountain a lot. My daughter isn’t quite ready to head to the top, but we have so much fun just being together and looking out over the city to even notice. We’ll get up there someday, but I am in no rush for sure!” There is no outdoor activity that is more synonymous with the area than golf, a sport that takes full advantage of the Valley’s 330+ days of sunshine. Metro Phoenix boasts over 220 golf courses, the majority of which are in or around the Scottsdale area, with many consistently ranked among the best to play in the country or even the world. Beyond Phoenix, Arizona as a state is comprised of approximately 85 percent national forests, national parks, recreation and wilderness areas, wildlife preserves and Indian reservations. The options for outdoor adventure are truly limitless. For mountain bikers McDowell Mountain Regional Park is the premier venue in the Southwest and features a competitive-race circuit of three loops totaling more than 15 miles of single track, in addition to the 25 miles of trails that wind through the rest of the park.
Rock Climbers visiting the area have access to some of the best cliffs to scale in the world to the northwest of Prescott in the Granite Mountain Wilderness Area, which is not to say they even need to leave town as perhaps the most iconic climbs can be had on the face of Camelback Mountain. Other adventure seekers will find world-class opportunities for anything from off-roading and hotair ballooning to even skydiving, spelunking (caving), and high-performance car driving, just to scrape the surface. A more traditional winter experience can be found just a short trip away, where skiers and snowboarders alike can get in their powder fix. Less than a three hour’s drive to the north, Flagstaff’s Arizona Snowbowl may be the state’s most notable ski destination with 40 runs/trails and six lifts, Sunrise Park Resort out east is its biggest with 65 runs. Often forgotten is Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley in the Catalina Mountains just outside Tucson, which boasts an admirable 18 runs as well as the title of being the southernmost ski resort in the United States. A whole new slate of events will accompany the arrival of Super Bowl XLIX this winter. The Phoenix Convention Center will be transformed into a pro football theme park to create the NFL experience. That is just part of what will be Super Bowl Central, a 12-block area in the heart of Downtown Phoenix. Something new since the city hosted its last Super Bowl in 2008, Super Bowl Central will feature a concert stage, local food trucks, beer and wine gardens, network broadcast stages and an autograph stage were fans of all ages can shake hands with some of footballs best players from the past and present. Westworld of Scottsdale will play host to the 24th annual “The Super Bowl Taste of the NFL – The Party with a Purpose.” This event is held on the eve of the game and is the most successful charitable event held during Super Bowl Week, and features more than 32 restaurant stations, including one from each NFL city. In addition to amazing food and wine, attendees will have the opportunity to interact with celebrity chefs and NFL greats, all while raising money for food banks in each of the NFL team cities as well as other select hunger relief organizations. In addition to the 16 million people who visit metropolitan Phoenix each year, an estimated 90,000 will be arriving to the area as a result of Super Bowl XLIX. Just around the corner in 2017 the city will again be on the national stage as it plays host to the NCAA Final Four which will again bring thousands more. Whatever reason they come, people that experience the glory of winter in the Valley will want to experience it again and again, that is if they ever leave at all. Season chicken w/ salt and pepper, then cook. Set aside, and preheat oven to 400F. Lightly coat a baking sheet with spray, and place tortilla on tray. Spread the pesto on the tortilla, leaving about an inch for crust. Combine other ingredients except cheese in a bowl and toss. Spread evenly over pesto. Top with cheese and bake until cheese is melted and tortilla is slightly toasted. (Usually about 10 min.) This healthy pesto chicken pizza utilizes super-lean chicken breast, is packed with veggies, and substitutes tomato sauce for pesto and crust for a low-carb, whole grain tortilla. The flavors from the basil pesto mix great with sundried tomatoes tie things together in a super healthy (and easy!) alternative to traditional pepperoni pizza.
Chocolate Protein Mug Cake (serves 1)
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon, ground 1/4 teaspoon Baking Powder 2 tablespoons Pumpkin, canned 2 teaspoons Cocoa, unsweetened, powder 1/4 cup Egg White, raw 1 tablespoon Chia Seed, dried 30 grams Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey – Chocolate
Mix all ingredients together in a coffee mug, mixing dry ingredients first. Microwave for 70-80 seconds on high. A decadent dessert for one to curb any evening sweet tooth, this mug cake also has balanced ratios of protein, carbs, and healthy omega 3 fatty acids. Additionally, the heart-healthy chia seeds provide a fiber boost with 11g of fiber and plenty of antioxidants.

fter five successful years of operating his personal training and boot camp facility, Pulse Fitness owner Tim Lyons is ready for more. He wants to change more lives and impact the community of North Scottsdale in a positive and bigger way. “We’ve enjoyed every moment of the past five years getting to know our clients and revamping our services to meet the needs of the community,” says Lyons. “Now, we are ready to offer more and help an even bigger segment of the population.” Set to open by March 2015, Pulse Fitness will be relocating to open a new training center. Located at 19121 N. Pima Road next to the CCV Church on Pima Rd just north of Legacy, Pulse’s new location will expand its current location to include nearly 8,000-square-feet of workout space, including 1,400 square feet of turf and a 650 square feet of yoga and spin studio. Lyons and the coaches at Pulse Fitness are excited about the expansion, knowing that it will allow them to change more lives and help more people in the community achieve their health and fitness goals. The business model developed by Lyons allows for maximum accountability and community between members. Pulse Fitness isn’t a gym where you go in, perform your workout on your own, and just leave. Lyons has designed the new facility with the intention of building a community, a fun place for its members to gather and create relationships with their coaches as well as other members.
PERSONAL TOUCH
“Pulse Fitness has built its reputation on employing a highly-qualified personal training staff who believe in continued education in order to provide the best coaching to help clients reach their goals,” notes Lyons. “While we will expand our services to include several classes, at our core, we are still a personal training gym.” Together, the coaches at Pulse Fitness hold more than 10 certifications, including Titleist Performance Institute Golf Fitness, Precision Nutrition, NSCA-CSCS and Fascial Stretch Therapy. The team at Pulse Fitness works together to develop your personal exercise and nutrition plan, meaning that no matter what time you come in, your plan stays consistent to maximize your results and accountability. Knowing what exercises to do, when to do them, how long to rest in between workouts, and how to properly fuel your body before and after training can make all the difference in results you seek. Pulse Fitness has a team of experts ready to help you navigate the gym, nutritional information, exercise programs and proper recovery. CLASSES
High intensity group boot camp classes will be continued and expanded at the new facility with plenty of new space, turf, and state- of-the-art equipment to serve a diverse clientele. Boot camp classes are 60-minute, high-intensity training classes that focus on metabolic conditioning and fat loss. Pulse Fitness is unique CONTINUED >

in that it utilizes Myzone heart-rate monitoring system in conjunction with boot camps to display individualized heart rates throughout the class. This technology provides members with customized reports and measures client’s effort throughout the session. 30-minute Regeneration classes will also continue to be offered. These classes utilize self-stretches, self myofascial release, and various low intensity mobility exercises to focus on regeneration and recovery of the body. “The secret to our success is that we are constantly searching for ways to improve the services we provide our members,” says Lyons. “Earlier this year, we asked our members what services they would like to see added to our repertoire and the overwhelming response was: smoothie bar, yoga and spin classes. We are happy to announce that with our larger facility, we will have the space to offer it all.” To better serve their members in the new facility, Pulse will have a boutique-style spin and yoga studio in addition to personal training and boot camps. The Myzone heart rate monitoring system will be integrated through cycle classes as well, to allow for a personal and individualized spinning experience. Additionally, one-on-one assisted stretching will be offered as Fascial Stretch Therapy for anyone looking to improve his or her flexibility and mobility. NUTRITION
In addition to designing a state-of-the-art fitness facility, the team is excited to offer the addition of a smoothie bar that will provide convenient access to pre and post workout nutrition products.
“Nutrition is a critical component for total wellness, performance and optimal results. We want to offer people access to healthy and nutritious whole-food options. Often times, our members are on the go and don’t know what to eat, or are too busy to stop and prepare a nutritious meal,” says Lyons. In effort to provide a solution to clients and promote awareness for proper nutrition, Lyons has designed a smoothie bar within the facility that will focus on serving healthy, nutritionally whole (and delicious) protein smoothies and shakes with nutrient dense ingredients to replenish the body and promote optimal recovery. Pulse Fitness will also continue to offer clients their custom nutritional programs, incorporating meal design and planning. The Pulse Fitness team is leading the fitness industry with their unique approach to training. “With our growing team and larger facility, we will continue to offer the highest quality of training services,” says Lyons. “Our new location will allow us to provide additional, innovative training tools, resources, and techniques which will help our members accomplish their goals. We will continue our commitment to improve and change the lives of members of our community.” The team at Pulse Fitness is excited to share with you their brand new facility and invite you to join the community, to experience total fitness and well being! irst Choice Loan Services opened its Scottsdale office earlier this year. Led by Vice President RJ Crosby, First Choice serves the mortgage needs of thousands of families. Beginning in 2009, First Choice Loan Services has grown to a team of close to 600 members in 14 locations across the United States. “We aim to provide all of our realtor partners and the homebuyers/homeowners with whom we work the absolute highest quality service. We want to deliver them a ‘wow’ experience,” says Crosby. RJ is a Scottsdale native and a graduate of Coronado High School and the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. he has grown up with, families he meets through his children, and families he encounters through his extensive referral network. Presently, we are in a very strong purchase-driven market. Although not like it was a few years ago, there also are still opportunities for many homeowners to refinance to a better interest rate. The rapid appreciation of homes in Maricopa over the past 5 years also has created an opportunity for homeowners to take advantage of their newfound home equity and refinance from, as an example, a FHA loan with monthly mortgage insurance into a conventional loan with no monthly mortgage insurance, thereby reducing their overall monthly payment. That’s the beauty of where we are currently; the conditions create a lot of options for home buyers and homeowners. First Choice Loan Services provides a wide range of mortgage products including FHA and VA loans, fixed and adjustable rate mortgages, refinancing options, jumbo loans and robust suite of renovation mortgages. “Opening the Scottsdale location of First Choice has allowed us to build an amazing culture, and our clients can feel the difference. In our office, we are helping families build RJ Crosby-Vice President credit. It’s not a file – it’s a Branch Manager family. It’s not a loan – it’s PHONE 602.220.4300 a life. The Most Convenient Way to Get a Massage THE SOOTHE APP ARTICLE BECCA MULDER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
S
oothe is a revolutionary new massage-on-demand service for wellness-oriented individuals desiring a sameday appointment, or an advanced booking, in the privacy of their home or office. Soothe launched in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Miami, Los Angeles and is coming soon to San Francisco, Chicago, San Diego, Austin, New York City. Soothe was founded by tech entrepreneur Merlin Kauffman, a massage lover who was very frustrated with the limited operating hours of traditional spas and availabilities of therapists to do house/office calls. “We’ve made it super convenient for a person to book a spa-quality massage via their mobile phone or computer with as little as 60 minutes advance notice,” says
26
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | January 2015
Kauffman. “Soothe’s uniqueness lies in its ability to connect the client to an available therapist who can quickly come to the client’s location and deliver a 5-star service at an affordable price—we have removed all the hassle for the customer, including the issue of paying the gratuity and taxes which are included. Even guests at hotels can use this service.” The on-demand service offers a choice of Swedish, deep tissue, sports or couples massages in 60-, 90- and 120-minute sessions. Appointments are offered between the hours of 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. in Arizona. Fixed prices are $99 (60 minute), $139 (90 minute), and $169 (120 minute) per person, regardless of the type of massage selected.
HOW IT WORKS
First, the client downloads the iOS app from Soothe.com/app and selects what type of massage is desired and the treatment length, selects the gender of the massage therapist, then enters the address of service and any notes about parking issues to facilitate the therapist’s ability to access the destination. Last, the client enters his credit card for billing. Soothe then sends a confirmation to the customer’s email. For clients who cannot download the app, they can book via Soothe.com, or call the toll-free number 800.960.7668 during business hours.

Meet Triathlete Kayla Hankins ARTICLE BECCA MULDER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A
t the age of 11, Kayla Hankins is already a champion on and off her bike. She has competed in multiple bicycle races on the Strada Racing team, as well as equestrian events, swimming, running, triathlons—all while still earning A’s in school. Kayla comes from a family of 13 of course, that’s including her two cats, a horse, four fish, two frogs, her parents and her brother Alex. Maintaining A’s at school is top priority for Kayla and her family. Her favorite subject is science. “I think science is a lot of fun and my dad is a high school science teacher. Someday, I would like to go to medical school. I would love to
someday attend Stanford University and specialize in something for kids as an ER doctor.” Did I mention just how competitive this 11-year-old is? Well, in case you were wondering, she has won more than 40 triathlons and more than 60 bike races. HER MOST RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE:
2014 Arizona State Road Race Champion 2014 Arizona State Criterium Champion 2014 National Track Cycling Champion – USA Cycling 2014 Junior Girls 11-12 500 Time Trial Sprint National Record
All of these accomplishments wouldn’t be possible without the help of Mike and Lisa Kolin, her two coaches with Strada Racing. “They took me from being a girl who loved to ride my bike to being a National Champion,” Kayla says. “They have worked with me since I was eight years old.” Like any other kid, Kayla loves her social life. Best friends Ashley, Nikki and Tanner fully support each other in their dreams of school and sports. “I have a friend who has been my friend since we were a couple months old,” Kayla says. “I also have some really close friends from school. Then I have my cycling friends, and my teammates who are close friends on and off the bike.” Future goals for Kayla include qualifying for the Junior Worlds and making an Olympic team for cycling and winning a gold medal. Kayla would like to be the first woman to compete the Tour de France. Do you know an exceptional student we should consider for a spotlight? Send details to Becca at BMulder@lifestylepubs.com.

Growing Older, But Not Up WORDS JIM COSGROVE
M
y New Year’s resolution is to act more like a 5-year-old. I got the idea from my daughters. They laugh a lot. They sing often and loudly. They spontaneously break into dance. They cry and sob and throw occasional tantrums, and then a few minutes later they’re laughing again. They don’t hang onto yesterday or worry too much about next week. I want a little more of all of that in my life. So, I’ve been watching and listening to my girls and learning from them. I realized that the key to success that we adults are endlessly searching for is really quite simple. It’s joy. That is, to exist as joy-filled beings and seek out and extract joy from every situation life throws our way–to be more childlike (not childish) in everything we do. I’m pretty sure all of us understood this when we were kids, but we’ve long forgotten what it’s like to live in the childlike present. A couple of years ago in January my then 5-year-old daughter announced, “This is going to be a cool year!” And do you know what? She ended up having a cool year. In fact, she had an awesome year. And do you know why? She decided to have a cool year. She chose to make it an awesome year. And it really is that easy. Joy is a choice. It’s not simple, but easy. Despite the loss of a job or a loved one…despite failing health or an expanding waistline or (in my case) thinning hair…despite our circumstances, we can still opt for joy. It’s always there for us
to choose or not to choose. We know this is true because we’ve all seen it and heard it in stories of those who overcome tragedy and monumental setbacks. It takes strength of character and a full-throated child-like spirit. So, this year, if you see me riding on the back of a cart in the grocery store parking lot, or singing out loud on the street, or dancing in a fountain, please join me. Jim Cosgrove, aka Mr. Stinky Feet, is an award-winning children’s singer-songwriter, speaker and writer and has been entertaining youth and their families for many years.
