amily. It comes in all different shapes and sizes, some of which are furry and four-legged. No matter what type of animal it is, we consider our pets a part of our family because, well, they just are. Pets teach us much about selflessness and love. They train us in the ways of nurturing, as much as we train them to do anything. Their greeting upon our arrival home is pure joy, and pets never speak a bad word to us, take us for granted, or ask for too much. Rather, they are there for us when we need an extra pick-me-up, they offer security and comfort. In essence, our pets are paying it forward to us on a daily basis. They provide unconditional love, and what greater love is there that that?

Because these family members are so precious to us, it’s important to find places we feel good about to care for them and offer quality of life. Our community has some great options to help care for our pets--be it a pet store, pet hospital or even a fun dog park to let your friend move around and play.

The recent fire at the GRACE donation building brought out the best in our community, and we are happy to share the story of a some of your neighbors who selflessly gave their time and efforts to make sure the damage that had occurred was swiftly made into a manageable situation. Funds raised afterwards surpassed the initial goal.

Wandering the Bluebonnet Trail

TEXAS SHOWS OFF ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DEBRA CAFFEY

TRIVIA TEXAS BLUEBONNET TRIVIA The bluebonnet was adopted as the official State Flower of Texas at the request of the National Society of Colonial Dames in Texas on March 7, 1901. Cattle do not eat the bluebonnet plants. Bluebonnets almost always peak on or about April 21, San Jacinto Day, the day when Texas won its battle for independence in the Battle of San Jacinto.

M

other Nature is at her best during bluebonnet season in Texas. From late March through the end of April, displays of the state flower abound all the way from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex into the heart of the Hill Country. From patches along the highways to raucous fields of color, the bluebonnet can take your breath away as you round the bend on a country road. Fortunately, for those of us in the DFW area, the Official Texas Bluebonnet Trail lays just a short drive south of Dallas off Interstate 45 in Ellis County near the city of Ennis, aptly dubbed the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas. It is here, from April 1- April 30, that the city showcases more than 40 miles of mapped, driving bluebonnet trails in an event that is attended by tens of thousands of visitors each year. Since 1951, the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails has been a project of the Ennis Garden Club. Beginning April 1, members of the garden club drive the trails around Ennis and report the bloom status to the Ennis Convention and Visitors Bureau, who then post the status to their website and Facebook page in order to keep visitors up to date on the areas of best blooming during the time of their visit.

The trails around Ennis are believed to be the oldest known bluebonnet trails in the state, and the spectacular wildflower shows are natural to the area which results in varied blooming times along the trails due to weather conditions and terrain. However, the bluebonnets typically peak around the third week of April. Visitors are invited to download the self-driving tour map from the Ennis Convention & Visitor Bureau website or to participate in tours guided by a garden club expert. Guided group tours last approximately two hours and are priced at $50 with an advance reservation. The guided tour requires an empty seat on your group’s bus, motorcoach or van. Also featured during this time are the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival and the annual bluebonnet photo contest. The festival takes place April 18-19 in downtown Ennis. Events include arts and crafts, children’s activities, live music, scenic country rides, and the 2015 Antique American Independent Automobile Show. Details of the 2015 Bluebonnet Photo Contest are posted to the web page. Follow the progress of the bluebonnet season at VisitEnnis.org and BluebonnetLove.com or on Facebook at Ennis Convention and Visitors Bureau and Texas Bluebonnet Sightings.

What started out as a robbery, ended up in a blaze that destroyed approximately $75,000 in property and donated goods that included a temporary storage building, a shipping/storage container, fixtures, and several bins of donated clothing and household items. Though Grapevine firefighters responded quickly and were able to contain the flames within the span of a few minutes, the damage was significant enough to throw off the GRACE operations for several days. GRACE Executive Director Shonda Schaefer expressed concerns about being able to meet the immediate needs of the many families that rely on their support on a daily basis. This is where the heroes enter the story. It is where we are reminded of the goodness and strength of a community that rises to an occasion and begins the process of healing and restoration. Aside from the first-responder firefighter heroes on the night of the blaze, the next several days saw a steady stream of fresh

Taking Care of Fluffy & Fido Investing in the health and wellbeing of our pets ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DEBRA CAFFEY

W

e love our pets. According to statistics compiled by the American Pet Products Association, Inc. for 2013-2014, Americans own approximately 83 million dogs, 96 million cats, 20 million birds and 8 million horses (not to mention several million other fish and exotic animals). Those numbers comprise about 68 percent, or 82.5 million, of U.S. households. Common sense supports that those estimates have multiplied into 2015. Not only are we owning more pets, we are spending lots of money on them. The APPA reports actual spending of almost $56 billion in 2013, and they estimated a rise to more than $58 billion in 2014 (actual figures have not yet been released). The numbers break down into roughly $23 billion in food expenses; $14 billion in supplies and over-the-counter medicines; $15 billion in veterinary care and insurance; $2 billion in live animal purchases; and $5 billion in pet services such as grooming, boarding, training, pet sitting and daycare. Over the years, our attitudes toward pets have changed. Where they might have once been relegated to the outdoors, more and more pet owners seem to be welcoming pets into their homes as full-fledged family members. And, they are taking better care of them than ever before. Indeed, more high-end products and services are reflecting the rise of our pet’s status in the family. The emergence of pet health insurance, natural pet foods and treats, and pet-sitting/daycare services illustrates that we have an increased level of concern for our pets. CONTINUED >

Animal Tracks

(CONTINUED)

With this in mind, OneFourteen Lifestyle decided to take a look at our area and the retail establishments, products, services and facilities available to us for our pets. While it is certainly not representative of each and every one, they highlight the trends in pet care right here at home. EATS AND TREATS

Most notable among our pets’ food options is a growing subculture of what could be deemed health food stores (especially for cats and dogs). New kid on the block, Hollywood Feed, is a franchise based in Memphis, Tennessee, that has recently begun its expansion into the DFW metroplex. Stores feature a nice variety of healthy food and treat options for dogs and cats. They also stock a wide selection of toys, and specialty pet accessories that include a line of all-cotton, American-made pet beds, collars and leashes. If that’s not enough, you can even drop your pet off for grooming services or make use of their self-serve dog wash stations. Nearby locations include Southlake, Colleyville and Keller. A small number of specialty dog bakeries and boutiques have popped up here as well. In Southlake, Three Dog Bakery whips up dog confections in their own kitchen. Serving up everything from dog biscuits to pupcakes and birthday cakes, the display is overflowing with fun, fresh, healthy treats for your favorite pup that look like something straight out of your favorite bakery. And, even though you might not choose to eat them, they are completely fit for human consumption. Shelves in the small store are filled with unique pet products that include food, treats and accessories. Even the rawhide chews are custom-made for Three Dog Bakery and are guaranteed safe and digestible. Other similar stores in nearby communities include Colleyville’s Lucky Dog Barkery and North Richland Hill’s Woof Gang Bakery which also feature boutique pet accessories/clothing and healthy food and treat choices. HEALTH

Our area has a large number of quality veterinary services that are too numerous to single out any one. My experience has always been positive to go with word-of-mouth recommendations if you are looking for a new healthcare-giver for your pet. But, even when you have the best care, trouble can arise when there is a medical emergency. What do we do for care after hours or on weekends? I’ve been in that situation, and the people at The Animal Emergency Hospital of North Texas were a blessing when we were in a panic. The facility is established and supported by many local veterinary offices as a go-to resource for emergent animal care. Located in Grapevine, it specializes in emergency and critical care of all companion and exotic animals 24/7 on a walk-in basis. For cat lovers, an added bonus in our area (though not an emergency facility), is the only feline specialty practice in North Texas. The Kitten to Cat Hospital is located in Southlake and provides a full range of specialized care for your favorite kitty in a feline-only environment. 18

$58 billion on pet care in 2014.

Years of study have proven that most dogs require more mental, physical and social interactions than other pet species. Indeed, it has been directly related to training and behavior issues. Fortunately, our area provides many public and private facilities for providing your dog with the physical activity it needs. Grapevine, Southlake and Trophy Club all provide designated dog parks for playtime and learning social skills. Each has their own personality and perks, and they prove a great outlet for a young dog or one with excessive energy when you can’t (or don’t want to) take them for a walk or run. They also provide a free playgroup for your dog and a great environment for interacting with other dog owners. Options to check out include Southlake’s BooBoo’s Buddies Dog Park located near the Bob Jones baseball fields; Trophy Club’s Independence Dog Park located near the entrance of Trophy Club Park; Grapevine’s unofficial and unnamed dog park located near the Oak Grove soccer complex at Lake Grapevine. (If you have a water-loving dog, the Grapevine dog park is the only location with a pond for swimming and water-fetch games.) Another nearby spot is the Tipps Canine Hollow dog park located in North Richland Hills off Davis Boulevard. With the exception of Grapevine, all locations have designated play areas for small and large dogs. All parks require the supervision of your pet at all times. Dog daycare provides a similar experience in a supervised environment for pay. Pet owners that work often seek care and entertainment for their dogs on a regular basis, and other owners utilize them for social interaction and playtime when they can’t supervise or participate. Half-day and full-day programs are generally available on a drop-in basis at very reasonable prices. In Southlake, Elite Suites offers daycare in specially-designated areas for both large and small dogs that are supervised by a staff member to ensure the safety of each pet. A similar service is offered at Colleyville’s Animal America Pet Resort. A dedicated small-dog (under 25 pounds) facility is found at Southlake’s Fireplug Inn. All of the daycare facilities also offer boarding and grooming services by appointment.

he Southlake Women’s Club has been a hallmark of charitable giving since its inception in 1985. In the years since, the membership has worked tirelessly to provide quality programs and events to aid them in the fundraising that they do each year in support of the many Northeast Tarrant County charities that help women, families, children and the elderly. Of all the events they host, a local and visitor favorite has become their annual Art in the Square. This year, they host the 16th anniversary of the juried, fine-arts festival that has become a nationally-ranked event attended by thousands of people. Art in the Square is an open-air, community event that takes place over two-and-a-half days. It features more than 150 world-class, professional artists and emerging teen artists along with a variety of quality entertainment acts, food and beverage

Parting Thoughts

Puppy Love

WORDS DEBRA CAFFEY

O

wning a dog has been, without question, one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. I often chat with friends about our four-legged friends, and we all agree that the bond we share with our dog is the closest we have ever come to knowing true, unconditional love. There is never a moment that they don’t adore us. Their sweet faces greet us with joy every time we return home from our journeys, and they remain loyal beside us through thick and thin. Their devotion knows no bounds. While I grew up a cat person, I discovered puppy love when we finally gave in to my son’s plea for a dog. In spite of the fact that the dog was supposed to be his, I fell head over heels in love before we had ever walked away from the pet adoption. I adored every moment of our life with him. He was my companion when my two sons were outgrowing the need for my attention. He took walks and explored nature with me. He protected me. He consoled me when I cried. And, he knew that I was there for him when he fell ill with seizures that left him dazed and afraid. We were friends. One of the saddest days of my life was the day Joey died. The silence of his absence reverberated through

the house, and I felt lost for a long time. It was strange to be without him and the routine we had established. I am forever grateful to the friends and family that shared their pets with me during that time. It was the perfect therapy to have a furry companion for a day or for several weeks. For quite some time, I was seldom without a borrowed dog, or sometimes two, to keep me company. It has been four years, and I am still on a dog hiatus. Life got crazy in lots of new ways, and the timing has never been quite right for bringing another dog home. I still visit my friends with dogs, and I still do an occasional dog-sitting duty. Sometimes, I take a spin through the pet store on a weekend when the rescue agencies bring in their animals for adoption. I’m keeping a watch out for the one that will one day pull at my heart strings and ask to come home. In the meantime, I enjoy the occasional company of my youngest son’s dog, Daisy. She’s a rambunctious labmix puppy that gives me a run for my money when she returns home with him for college holidays and summer breaks. I love every minute of her visits. Having her around is like a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds. She reminds me of how special puppy love can be.
