Spreading the Entrepreneurial Love

connecting grapevine, southlake, westlake, trophy club

FEBRUARY 2015

H

opefully everyone’s new year is off and running to a great start! With new beginnings come new ideas. In this edition, you will meet several members of our community who have worked diligently, just as a true entrepreneur would, to form a new business. Whether it be a new fitness center, a new, quaint boutique shop, or a new restaurant in town to enjoy with that sweet valentine of yours, this community provides a plethora of choices for anyone with that entrepreneurial heart.

We also hope to inspire you to try a new type of workout that offers different ways to transform your body and mind (and take it from me, it really does). You will be offered several useful tips from professional designers, cooks and other business owners. The businesses in this community remain focused on keeping their customers happy with great products, services and community involvement. These aspects are highlighted in the people whose stories we have captured in this issue. I had the pleasure of meeting a number of them and was intrigued by how a single idea or dream they once had, sometimes many years ago, became a successful, flourishing business. These people never gave up, even when running into unforeseen obstacles. The heart and tenacity of these individuals could inspire just about anyone. As it is said, “One idea can transform your life.” And speaking of ideas, throughout this year, if anyone has an idea for a story for our magazine, be it a star teacher, student, business, individual you know, a wedding announcement, or any other thought for an article, please email me at: KAnderson@LifestylePubs.com

Making Your House A Home Tips from Julie Reed of Gallery One Window Fashions Article and Photography Julie Reed

W

hether you just moved in five days or five years ago, making a house into your home can seem like an overwhelming task. Here are some tips to help you create style and warmth in your living space. Where to Begin? The best advice is to start with one room and make it the environment in which you want to live. Starting with the room where you spend the majority of your time ensures you will be able to enjoy the effort you put into it. Not ready for that? Then start with an area of the house like the entrance way or the office. This will allow you to enjoy the new look while inspiring you on a regular basis to continue the makeover process. Get Started It sounds clichÊ, but sometimes you just have to jump into a project. It is true that in interior design a single element can be the inspiration for the entire room. If you are thinking of a new look for your room but don’t know where to start, just look around for that inspiration. It can be a color or a shape, maybe a picture that catches your attention, a landscape or even an element in nature, but whatever it is, this will be the beginning of your design. Take a trip to a store or two, or save ideas on an inspirational site like HOUZZ or Pinterest. Just get started. 12

OneFourteen Lifestyle | February 2015

Add Color By simply painting the walls of a room, you can change the atmosphere. Visit the paint section of a home center to see which palette speaks to you. Look up some ideas that are trending right now, like the Harmony Collection. Not ready for that commitment? Then look for items such as area rugs, throw pillows, or lamps to accent the room. This is a good way to try out new colors or trends (think chevron) without changing the entire look Dress Those Windows Nothing simultaneously brings style and comfort to your home quite like window treatments. With the correct shading, natural light can create an atmosphere of softness and comfort while giving you the privacy you need. The style that comes with Hunter Douglas Shades will alter the look and design of a room. Hunter Douglas Silhouettes and Pirouettes will transform the lighting that comes into your space. Finally, finish the look with beautiful drapery panels. This will add color, texture, and will soften your windows while framing them. The best option, however, is to seek out a consultation with us. Here in the Southlake area you can contact us at Gallery One Window Fashions. Let us help your house become your home.

Just Dance Custom Dancewear Q&A with Owners of Just Dance Article Antia Mauer and Cara Switzer Photography Adria Ruff

wanted to put her degree to good use. One day Cara came out of her class with Anita’s daughter and said “We have to do this together!” Anita started slowly by designing and sewing costumes for some of Cara’s dance soloists. The costumes were so amazing, the following season more and more dancers at the studio wanted Anita to sew their costumes. Word spread and finally we opened Just Dance Customs on Etsy! Our creations were now available to the world! Together, we wanted to create quality dancewear, which was customizable to each dancer. Each of our sets is available in any fabric and color. You can mix and match and design pretty much anything you want! Our slogan eventually developed into “Dream Your Design. We Make It Real”. We love working together. We both bring our own talents and qualities to the business. Both of us are moms, as well as business women now, so we both see things from several different perspectives, which helps us make our business the best it can be. Tell me a little bit about your business. How does it stand out to your competitors?

What made you decide to start this business? How long have you been around?

Just Dance Custom Dancewear officially launched in August of 2013. Although we had been sewing dancewear and costumes for a long time before that, August 2013 is when our Etsy shop officially opened online. We have experienced tremendous growth since opening our shop. We started off creating items for people in our local area, and have now shipped custom dancewear to customers in over 25 states across the USA! We now have over 2.3k followers on Instagram! We are grateful and thankful! The origin of Just Dance Custom Dancewear seemed to happen naturally. Anita has a daughter who has danced since she was little. Sewing had always been a “hobby” of Anita’s, and as her daughter Victoria was dancing at a studio multiple days per week, she noticed that there was a definite lack of options available for her daughter. Everything seemed “boring” and there were not any dancewear options to make the girls “stand-out!” So she started sewing her daughter Victoria some practice dancewear attire. Cara was Victoria’s teacher, and in each class or private lesson that she saw Victoria, she noticed that she was wearing some adorable clothing! Cara would ask Victoria “Who made your outfit?” and she would respond “My mom!” Cara was a full time dance director, instructor and choreographer, but also had graduated from college with a Business Degree in Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship. She

There are several differences. Number one is quality. We don’t “mass-produce” our items. Each item is handmade, specifically for each dancer. Also, our items are custom. See a set you like, but want it in your favorite colors? No problem! We can basically do anything, from extremely basic dancewear, to full-on custom competition costumes. We are also committed to excellent customer service. We will walk you through the process of designing and selecting your dancewear and we stand behind our products and designs 100%. We want the dancers to feel confident in what they are wearing. We want it to fit perfectly. Competitive dance is an expensive sport. If parents are investing their money in so many costumes and dancewear, we want OUR products to be something that everyone feels good about. What made you decide to place your business in this community?

We started in our community because there was a natural need right here! We have so many talented dancers right here in our community who were looking for custom, quality dancewear. We have branched outside of the community, (having shipped orders to over 25 states!) but our main following is right here in this area. What local charities is Just Dance a part of?

Currently a 10% tithe is given to the church. We hope to be presented with some opportunities in the future to be able to help out some dancers in the future that may be in need. We both believe the more “good” you put out, the better. To shop for any dancewear at Just Dance, visit their etsy site: etsy.com/shop/JustDanceCustoms February 2015 | OneFourteen Lifestyle

Meet Dana Rivera and Christy McNew Proud owners of Southlake’s Blush Article Kristi Anderson | Photography ???

O

n your marks, get…ready to be inspired! Dana Rivera and Christy McNew are owners of Southlake’s Blush. Blush is a mobile boutique that offers a variety of beautiful, unique, stylish clothing items. Whether it is a black-tie affair, or just a lounging-around-thehouse item you might need, Christy and Dana will have you covered. Dana Rivera They hand pick each item sold, so every piece will be of the utmost quality. They select from an array of lines and don’t sell any high fashion or designer labels, so they can keep their prices at a reasonable rate. Some of their background began in the beautiful parts of Napa Valley, California. Blush was founded in 2006 by Dana and her friend, Vanessa. Vanessa then moved to Colorado two years later and dived the business. Dana kept Blush Napa Valley as her portion. Dana kept growing the business by doing trunk shows and gaining a loyal following all the way from California to The Woodlands, Texas. In 2013, Dana then made the decision to move from Napa to our very own Southlake with her husband and two children. When she arrived in Southlake, she was inspired to keep her business going, but she felt she needed a partner here. Christy McNew attended Dana’s first trunk show in Southlake, and really wanted to be a part of it. Once Dana and Christy got know each other more, they quickly learned that they were perfectly matched as business partners. Christy has a background in fashion and design and Dana has a passion for design, fashion and travel. Christy loves Dana’s positive attitude, her energetic nature, and her kind heart. Dana loves how hard Christy works: anything that is needed for the business, Christy is up to the challenge. Since day one, the Blush motto has been, “If it isn’t fun, then we are doing it wrong.” This has proven itself time and time again. Christy and Dana get new clothing each month, and even over eight years, it is still just as exciting as the very first shopping trip. Dana is not fond of having a very aggressive marketing front, either. “My customers have always found me, and then bring their friends in and the circle grows,” she says. “I have some of the most loyal shopper’s ever. I continue to travel to Napa for trunk shows several times a year, and thanks to all of my friends and shoppers, the business keeps growing.” The connection with their shoppers is most important to them, and personal shopping is their passion. Dana says that nearly every piece she purchases is with a particular customer in mind, and more than 90 percent of the time, that customer will pick it out and try it on before she even has the chance to point out that outfit to them. Pretty impressive! Blush in Southlake is really gaining a lot of momentum. Dana 16

and Christy had one of their best months recently. They also love to give back to their favorite charities. They have given funds and clothing to the Gatehouse in Grapevine as well as other local schools in our community. They give seasonal donations to community services in Napa; Dana specifically helped after Napa was devastated by the earthquake last year. She was happy to be able to help the community that started it all for her. In addition to Blush, both Dana and Christy have other business endeavors they are a part of in Southlake. Dana works with LaRue Eppler teaching others about spiritual healing. She even helped Christy conquer her fear of flying. Christy works as a realtor in Southlake with Allie Beth Allman & Associates and is part of a top-producing team. Dana and Christy are looking forward to watching Blush grow in Southlake this year and continue their work with the Gatehouse. Wedding Bells

M

egan Katherine Johnston and Daniel Lee Arnold were united in marriage on August 8, 2014, in an evening ceremony at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Southlake. Senior Pastor John McKellar officiated in the ceremony. A rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom’s mother the previous evening at La Hacienda Ranch. The bride is the daughter of Don and Carolyn Johnston of Southlake. The groom is the son of Jeanne Arnold of North Richland Hills, Texas and Doug Arnold of Louisiana. The bride was escorted by her father and wore an Allure ballroom gown featuring lace detailing on the bodice. She carried a bouquet of petal pink garden roses enhanced with photo charms of beloved, deceased family members designed by Leslie Krawetzke of Grapevine. A reception immediately followed the ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Southlake. The bride traded in her silver pumps for Texas Tech cowboy boots and an evening of dancing and celebrating. The flower girls were Madison and Skylar Maupin, nieces of the groom, of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Addie Johnston, niece of the bride, of Midland, Texas. Ring bearers were Dub and Boone Johnston, nephews of the bride, of Midland, Texas. Readers were Marilyn Hill, the bride’s aunt, of Dallas, Texas, and Holli Williams, friend of the groom, of North Richland Hills, Texas. The bride is a 2004 graduate of Southlake Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas, and a 2008 graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. She holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and is employed as a 3rd grade teacher at Glenhope Elementary in the Grapevine Colleyville Independent School District, in addition to her service as a childcare provider at Whites Chapel United Methodist Church. The groom is a 2003 graduate of Richland Highland School in Haltom City, Texas, and a 2008 graduate of The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, following two years at Hardin Simmons University where he played soccer on scholarship. He holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and is employed at Smithfield Middle School in the Birdville Independent School District as a 6th grade science teacher and a 7th and 8th grade coach for football, track, basketball and soccer. The couple met in February of 2013 after being introduced by Daniel’s cousin and Megan’s co-worker, Michael Maupin, following a season of disappointing dates. It didn’t take long for them to realize God had a hand in bringing them together. By November of that same year, they were engaged to be married. Megan remarks, “We move fast, but when you know, you know!” The couple currently resides in Euless, Texas. February 2015 | OneFourteen Lifestyle

What’s Cooking?

Soup for the Soul Warm from the Inside Out

Article and Photography Debra Caffey

I

love winter cooking. My favorite dishes are simple comfort foods that warm my body and my soul as the winter winds bluster outside and invite me to cuddle up on the sofa with a good book in front of a fire. Over the years, I’ve collected quite a few recipes that have become favorites of both my family and our friends…recipes that are frequently-requested fare when the temperatures turn cold. They are the hand-written entries in an old recipe journal I started more than 30 years ago, when I first married. The pages of the journal lay flat to them from uses beyond count. Stains spatter the paper, and my notes line the margins. If the house were to catch fire, this book would be one of the treasures I’d try to rescue or would mourn should it be lost. The ingredients are simple, and I make it a point to keep them on hand for that easy meal at the end of a long day…you know, the one you can toss together on the stovetop or in the Crockpot that fills the air with fragrant scents that make it seem like you’ve been slaving away all day! Each of the selections are satisfying on their own, but are more than a meal when served up with a hot pan of cornbread or cheesy green chili cheese toast and a green salad. Enjoy! Chicken Tortilla Soup

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2-3 cloves of garlic, chopped (or to taste) 2-3 stalks of celery, chopped 1 bag frozen corn 3 tablespoons chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 2 15oz cans fire-roasted tomatoes 2 32oz boxes of Swanson’s reduced-sodium chicken broth 1 roasted chicken from the market, removed from the bone and cut into pieces Optional garnishes: cilantro, shredded cheese, tortilla strips, corn chips, sour cream, and chopped avocado

Add olive oil to the bottom of a medium-size stock pot or Dutch oven. Over medium-high heat, stir in chopped onion, garlic and celery. Salute until soft and translucent. Add corn and continuing stirring for 2-3 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and add chili powder, salt and pepper. Add fire-roasted tomatoes with juices to the pot along with the contents of one box of the chicken broth. Allow the broth and vegetables to simmer over medium-low heat for about

twenty minutes. Add chicken and heat through another 10-15 minutes. Additional broth may be added to your personal preference. Add additional salt and pepper, to taste. Serve with garnishes of your choice. Serves 4-6.

Taco Soup Taco Soup

2 pounds lean ground beef, browned and drained of fat 2 packets of McCormick’s reduced-sodium taco seasoning 1 packet Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix 1 packet Hidden Valley Ranch Fiesta dip mix 1 15-ounce can red kidney beans 1 15-ounce can black beans 1 15-ounce can pinto beans 2 15-ounce cans yellow corn 1 15-ounce can white hominy 2 32-ounce boxes of Swanson’s reduced-sodium chicken broth Optional garnishes: cilantro, shredded cheese, corn chips, sour cream, chopped tomato and chopped avocado Brown beef in a medium-size Dutch oven or stock pot. Drain off excess fat and return to stovetop over medium heat. Add packets of taco seasoning and dip mixes, stirring to combine. Add canned beans, corn and hominy with juices to the beef. Stir to combine, and add chicken broth to the mixture. Heat until hot and bubbly. We like to serve ours over Fritos® chili cheese corn chips garnished with a variety of the suggested toppings. Note: when reheating, additional chicken broth may be needed to thin the consistency. Serves 6-8.

My favorite dishes are simple comfort foods that warm my body and my soul as the winter winds bluster outside.

Cuban Black Bean Soup

1 pound dried black beans 10 cup water 1 large bay leaf 1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 4 large cloves garlic, chopped 1 medium-sized green bell pepper, chopped 3-4 teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon black pepper ¼ teaspoon ground oregano 2 ounces red wine 2 tablespoons sugar Cooked white or brown rice Optional garnishes: sour cream, chopped avocado, chopped tomato Rinse beans and soak 2 to 3 hours with bay leaf. Cover and boil gently one hour in the soaking water. Heat 1/3 cup olive oil in frying pan. Gently sauté onion, garlic, and bell pepper until tender. Add salt, black pepper, and oregano. Mix well. Add this mixture to beans and cook gently, covered, 1 to 1 ½ hours. Add wine, sugar, and 2 tablespoons olive oil to beans. Simmer, uncovered, at least 1 hour until beans are soft, but not falling apart, and the liquid is slightly thickened. If not thick enough, remove ½ cup of beans, mash, and return to pot. Adjust seasonings. Serve over rice, and garnish with chopped avocado, tomato, and sour cream. Note: I prepare the recipe up to the addition of the wine, sugar, and olive oil and move to the Crockpot on low to simmer for the day. I complete that last step and let the soup thicken while I prepare the rice and any side dishes before serving. This is tasty with a salad and rolls also. Serves 6-8. Parting Thoughts

Oh, Yes We Can! Words Jim Cosgrove

I

f someone tells you that you can’t follow your dreams, don’t believe them – not even for a second. For much of my adult life, people have told me, “you can’t do that!” or “that’ll never work.” And I’m not talking about expecting things to always “work out” or “succeed.” I’m talking about following your passions, no matter the outcome. Success is never guaranteed. But stagnation is certain if you don’t ever take a leap of faith. When my brother Dan and I first went into business together, many raised their eyebrows and shook their heads. One friend said, “Bad idea. My dad and his brothers started a family business, and now they don’t speak.” Nearly 13 years later, we’re still in business – although some months we limp along. Oh, and we still talk. Shortly after we married, my wife Jeni decided to quit her job (with family health benefits) and work with me. People told her, “You can’t work with your husband. You’ll drive each other crazy, and your marriage won’t last.” What they didn’t count on is that Jeni and I actually enjoy spending time with each other. It’s not always a picnic, but it works, and at the end of the day we still (most of the time) like each other.

26

OneFourteen Lifestyle | February 2015

When we found out Jeni was pregnant, our friends and family said, “I guess that puts an end to touring together. You can’t travel when the baby comes!” Oh, yeah? Watch us! We traveled with baby Lyda, and she learned how to adapt and ride in a car seat for long distances without a video player. “OK, fine,” they said. “You’ve done it with one, but you’ll never manage traveling with two kids.” Done it - and we are still doing it. We’ve logged about 17,000 miles on the road together this year. It’s crazy and exhausting sometimes. And, yes, there are tears and tantrums and frazzled nerves, but there is also laughter and joy and new people and new experiences and wonders to behold. The important thing is that we’re together. We still run into friends, family, and complete strangers who insist on dispensing advice laced with “can’t” and “don’t” and “shouldn’t.” We’ve learned to smile and nod our heads and plow forward. We know it’s just their prejudice and fear talking – fear of the unknown and fear of failure and, even, fear of success. There are some people who can’t imagine living the way we do. Fair enough, but I can’t imagine living any other way.
