Spring has sprung!

T

he year is in full swing, and spring is in the air! I always look forward to this time of year when it’s time to put away the boots, jackets, and long sleeved clothing, and instead get the warmer weather attire and sunglasses out. Spring can get us out of the indoors, and get us outside to enjoy being out in the sunshine, crisp fresh air and the beautiful gardens. Lucky for all of us, our community is full of different activities and venues to enjoy as far as outdoor entertainment goes. In this edition, our assistant editor, Debra Caffey will cover a field trip to the Dallas Arboretum. This is a must see, if you haven’t already visited here. The spring time happens to be the best time of year to get the full experience of this magical garden. There are beautiful arrangements of flowers, bountiful water displays, and the endless greenery you see throughout your visit. This is a pleasure the whole family can enjoy. It is the Arboretum’s 31st Annual Dallas Bloom festival this year, so be sure not to miss it. Spring offers more opportunities for us to meet our fellow neighbors while outdoors, whether we are jogging, gardening or just taking a mere stroll. It can lead to a bigger sense of community. If anyone meets a fellow neighbor that you believe would make a good story in our publication, be it a star student, teacher, business owner, etc. please contact me at kanderson@lifestylepubs.com

ealthy is not just a trend, and Mike & Carolyn Darretta, owners and super minds behind Pure Cafe in Southlake, Texas believe a commitment to being healthy can be fun and delicious. Mike & Carolyn uprooted life as they knew in New York to be closer to their grandchildren and kids and to start something new. They wanted a fresh concept to help people make healthy choices without sacrificing fun and f lavor. In February 2012, they opened Pure Cafe; and there’s been no looking back since. Mike and Carolyn believe what Pure Cafe offers makes a difference in the community and to them, customers are like kin. “Most are regulars and like family. Many of them we know by name!” says Carolyn. Offering a range of deliciousness, there are fresh pressed juices to sip or 1-5 day fresh squeezed juice cleanses for an overall well-being approach. Your Perfect State of Organization L

ife gets busy and clutter has a way of sneaking up on everyone. It may be all those shoes, the lack of space or the fact that you have absolutely no time - there are many reasons for the mess. But, whether you’re a single person living in an apartment or have a large family in a sprawling house, everyone can benefit from more organization. By simply thinking about storage differently and coming up with a smart organizational system that works for you, you’ll be on the way to creating a well-balanced, happier home. “For many, just the thought of starting the de-cluttering and organizing process is daunting,” said Lisa Engel, VP and General Manager Digital Commerce, ClosetMaid. “By breaking it down - room by room, or need by need, the process can actually become rejuvenating. You’re literally creating an easier life for yourself.”

STARTING THE PROCESS

If you’re just beginning, remember: baby steps. Focus on one small area or room - or even your junk drawer. Don’t get overwhelmed by the big picture as that’s when frustration mounts, causing you to walk away in disgust. Be sure to finish the project you’ve begun. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and be encouraged to tackle subsequent rooms and projects.

ALREADY STARTED

Stuck midway through an organizational project and need some inspiration to finish? Don’t be afraid to utilize online resources. ClosetMaid’s idea galleries, design tools and online store can help provide affordable and stylish solutions. Thinking of your project as a mini-makeover can help make it more exciting and less of a chore. Try taking pictures along the way, documenting your progress can really be rewarding. ALREADY ORGANIZED

If your home is already organized, you know that keeping clutter at bay is a full-time job. Be sure to keep a watchful eye on areas that naturally accumulate clutter, such as entryways and child play areas. If you do have children, get them involved in the organization process by teaching them where items belong and how to store them. By labeling storage bins, baskets or drawers, your kids will always be able to help your home stay organized and clean. “If you think like an organized person, soon you will be one,” said Lorie Marrero, certified professional organizer and author of the “Clutter Diet.” “It all starts with your state of mind.” To find your perfect state of organization visit ClosetMaid.com, StorganizationBlog.com or call 1-800-874-0008. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens CELEBRATING THE 31ST ANNUAL DALLAS BLOOMS: DEEP IN THE HEARTS OF TEXANS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DEBRA CAFFEY

T

here are few places in the DFW Metroplex that can compete with the spring displays at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden during Dallas Blooms, the Southwest’s largest annual f loral festival. Listed as one of the 10 most beautiful gardens in America and ranked among the most breathtaking gardens in the world, it is a pilgrimage I make every year – often several times a year - to spend quality time catching up with girlfriends or to give myself respite from a busy schedule. The 2015 Dallas Blooms, which opens February 28 and continues through April 12, marks the 31st anniversary of the event that features stunning plantings of more than 500,000 of spring’s favorite cool-season annual and perennial blooms, trees and shrubs spread over the property’s 66 acres and 19 gar14

dens, including the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden. The theme this year is “Deep in the Hearts of Texans”. The grounds are a truly magical place from the moment one moves through the gates. Huge planters and hanging baskets adorn the Trammell Crow Entry Plaza framing the paths in a cacophony of color and texture that shout spring. Off to the side, the inviting windows of the Hoffman Family Gift Store beckon with unique gifts and treats, and fun garden decorations spill from the doorway. I rarely leave without paying it a visit, and I almost always leave with a little treat in hand! The sea salt, chocolate-covered caramel candy at the register is one of my favorite small takeaways. In the distance, beautiful vistas of Dallas’ White Rock Lake peak through the branches of the trees, and on breezy

days, the surface is dotted with the pristine, white sails of the boats that glide along its surface. Along the opposite shore, grand estates stand guard and pique one’s curiosity about their residents and inner charms. Most days, the paths that wander to the left and right of the plaza are busy with visitors of all ages hailing from a variety of places, both near and far. The curves wind just out of sight dangling a promise of nature’s treasure just beyond the bend. They issue an invitation to move and to discover, and regardless of the number of times one has been there, the gardens seldom fail to offer up something new to behold. The varieties of pansies, tulips, daffodils and azaleas boggle the mind during the spring season. They overflow the carefully-tended seasonal beds along the walkways and on the center lawn in the Margaret Elizabeth Jonsson Color Garden. It is also here where the grand centerpieces of Dallas Blooms stand in all their glory. This year promises life-sized, Texas-themed topiaries that will include two longhorns, two horses, and the Texas star to replace 2014’s grand twin peacocks. Streams, pools and water features abound. A favorite spot for

many visitors is A Woman’s Garden, a series of several small, outdoor garden rooms, a Texas limestone bridge, a hanging garden, and small reflecting pools. Its highlight, however, is the Majestic Allee, a large, infinity, reflecting pool that appears to join the waters of White Rock Lake as it falls over the edge. For visitors planning to make a day of it, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens does not fall short on its selection of lunch fare either. For those that wish to eat on the property, there are a multitude of choices for grabbing a quick bite at one of several casual dining spots. Seated patio or indoor dining options are available at the Restaurant DeGolyer, and formal seated teas, available with a reservation to guests 13 and older, take place daily inside the DeGolyer House. Picnic lunches may also be enjoyed on the Martin Rutchik Concert Lawn or any of the other expanses of open lawn. (My friends and I like to dine on the open-air patio of the Restaurant DeGolyer. I highly recommend the chicken salad with dried cherries and pecans.) No matter your agenda, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden prove a great destination within the Metroplex – be it for Dallas Blooms or any other time of the year. It’s a great family outing, girl’s day out, or date night with a special someone. Hands down, it’s worth the trip. Remember to check out their list of summer concerts and other special events throughout the year, too. keep trophy club wild PRESERVING NATURE IN THE MIDST OF THE CITY

ARTICLE DEBRA CAFFEY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY KEEP TROPHY CLUB WILD

s city dwellers, most of us seldom give thought to what or who is displaced in order to make our beautiful, urban environments. We forget that nature once existed in place of the brick and mortar that make up our homes and our businesses - that native plants and animals that once called our plot of ground home have been uprooted to the point that some of them are now threatened with endangerment or extinction. In response to that threat, a group of concerned Trophy Club citizens has banded together in an attempt to turn the tide in their area. Operating as Keep Trophy Club Wild (KTCW), the 501(c)(3) non-profit is on a mission to offer a curriculum of public education and outreach in their own Trophy Club Park that aims to restore and protect an area of the park for generations to come. Trophy Club Park borders the northwest edge of Lake Grapevine in Denton County and is comprised of 877 acres that The Town of Trophy Club leases from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for use as a public park. The area is a part of the larger 11-million-acre Cross Timbers ecological zone that spans from southeastern Kansas, across the prairie and into central Texas, and is one of several designated parks areas that surround the lake. Approximately half of the park is zoned for amenities which include a six-mile system of motocross and atv trails, an 18-hole disc golf course, covered pavilions, public restrooms, boat ramps/launches, picnic sites, three miles of bike trails, seven miles of marked nature trails, camping, geocaching, laser tag and more. However, there is a 450-acre tract of untouched land tucked within the borders of the park where local citizens had noted many species of wildlife, birds, plants and trees were attempting to live in spite of the development surrounding them. They took action to save the area beginning in 2013 and have swiftly worked to set a plan of action to preserve and protect the ecosystem which also includes Marshall Creek and Denton Creek where they empty into Lake Grapevine. Keep Trophy Club Wild sought a cooperative effort with the Trophy Club Parks and Recreation Department, and the earmarked area was designated as the Trophy

As part of an effort to add a layer of knowledgeable support to the efforts of Keep Trophy Club Wild, four of the founding members of Keep Trophy Club Wild have pursued extended education and certification as Master Naturalists through a cooperative program of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. This certification uniquely qualifies them to act as stewards of the area’s natural resources and to expand the education and outreach programs offered at the Trophy Club Park Conservation Area in the years ahead. However, for the near future, Keep Trophy Club Wild is seeking support through memberships and donations from individuals and area businesses, as well as volunteers, to sustain their programs and to provide for continued growth. On the list for expansion are plans for interactive children’s programs, special interest adult programs and a plan for the construction of a nature education center near the preservation area. While initial plans will likely be for an outdoor area, the inclusion of indoor facilities is on the drawing board at such time that community support and funding make it possible. Volunteers provide ongoing maintenance to trails, shoreline and demo gardens as well as during special events and classes. For more information on how you can enjoy the Trophy Club Conservation Area or provide support through a membership, donation, or volunteer service, visit Keeptrophyclubwild.org.

CHIROPRACTIC... “A WELLNESS APPROACH TO BETTER HEALTH” ARTICLE DR. JERRY DAY

I

t seems that the word Wellness is used quite frequently when it comes to healthcare. But, what does it really mean? It appears wellness is defined as... “the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort”. I guess we can translate that to being pro-active in your approach, but how do we actually become healthier in body and mind? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Health as... “a state of complete and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. So what that signifies is just because you feel pretty good doesn’t mean you’re experiencing optimal health, does it? No... not anymore than saying just because I am not living in poverty means I have financial freedom. So in our quest to improve our overall health, we have to look to the most important system in our body... the “Nervous System”. The brain, the spinal cord and the nerves... this is what virtually controls every cell, tissue and organ in our body. This is what leads us to CHIROPRACTIC! Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that 18

OneFourteen Lifestyle | March 2015

focuses on removing nerve interference, restoring proper function of the nervous system and thereby optimizing health. I always educate my patients that “PAIN” is how our body communicates to us that something is wrong. In fact, I tell them that the word itself is an acronym...Pay Attention Inside Now, but that the absence of pain doesn’t mean we have achieved optimal health. In fact, in 25-30% of asymptomatic patients with cardiovascular disease, the very first sign or symptom may be death. So, when a patient comes into my office, the first goal is to address the symptoms that they present with such as pain, headaches or paresthesia, but the emphasis on treatment is aimed at treating and correcting the underlying cause of their condition and restoring proper function and not merely addressing their related symptoms. In my 20 years of being in practice, the last 2-3 years has produced more patients that seem to understand this approach. They recognize and give respect to the body’s amazing ability to heal itself if given the right tools and if we remove the interference to the process. Just like whenever you have a small cut on your finger, you don’t

have to think about how to heal it. Your body knows what to do, right? Chiropractic is a healthcare system that instead of focusing on the dis-ease/condition that the patient presents with, its emphasis is on the patient with the dis-ease/condition. At Park West Chiropractic & Wellness Center, my office offers chiropractic care, massage therapy, physical therapy, Class 4 laser treatments and nutritional counseling & supplementation using whole foods. When it comes to restoring and maintaining optimal health, a well-rounded approach is utilized. My office also works very closely with other physicians, orthopedists, neurologists and imaging centers in the DFW region to help ensure our patients receive the finest in healthcare. DR. DISCUSSING MONEY MATTERS

So how does one go into a marriage with a solid financial standing? Those soon-to-be-wed couples who converse openly about their finances are more likely to enjoy their big day with an understanding of their mate’s views on money. The experts at Lexington Law offer these questions every newly engaged couple should ask before the big day: 1. HOW DO YOU VIEW MONEY?

This is a loaded question, but your fiancé’s answer will help you understand their perspective and how it aligns with yours. Here are a few conversation starters on the subject: • How do you budget your money? • Are you meticulous about your bills and expenses, or are you comfortable to just “wing it?” • What’s the most you would ever spend on a home, car, piece of clothing, etc.? 2. HOW SHOULD WE BUDGET FOR A FAMILY?

M

Fiancé and Finances

Kids are expensive, especially if you haven’t planned for them. Talk to your partner about how many kids you would both like to have. Plan for child living expenses and how they will impact your budget, i.e. clothes, food, activities, medical expenses, schooling, etc.

FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE MARRIAGE

Some couples are content to let one person handle the finances, and others like to split up the bills and share household responsibilities. Regardless of what you decide, it is important to have a plan in place before getting married.

arriage is a milestone in life; yet, many enter into the next phase without asking their spouse some vital questions about money. If you are among the soon-to-be wed, consider starting a conversation using the questions below. Couples who plan their expenses ahead of time are more likely to enjoy their earnings, and less likely to need credit repair intervention. Men, women and weddings Females are often portrayed as materialistic or over-the-top when it comes to their big day, but recent findings from an online Harris Poll tell a different story. Surprisingly, the study found that twice the number of men stated they would or did go into debt to pay for their dream wedding. The study also found that both men and women valued financial responsibility. In fact, 91% indicated a preference for entering marriage debt-free as opposed to having a dream wedding. "Marriage is a lifelong commitment built on trust, clear communication and honesty," said John Heath, Directing Attorney for Lexington Law. "While some may find financial discussions unnecessary, understanding each other intimately in terms of what you both bring to the table – be it wealth or debt – will strengthen your relationship and help to avoid potentially serious friction to your marriage down the road."

3. HOW SHOULD WE COMMUNICATE ABOUT MONEY?

4. WHAT SHOULD WE DO WHEN WE DISAGREE ABOUT SPENDING?

You and your spouse won’t agree on everything. In fact, you may completely disagree on how to spend, save, and generally manage your money. The question is: What should you do when these disagreements arise? Avoiding the subject will put you at greater risk for financial (and marital) trouble. There’s no easy answer for this one, but presenting the topic during your conversation is a good start. 5. DO YOU HAVE ANY DEBTS THAT I SHOULD BE AWARE OF?

Secrets aren’t the best addition to a marriage, especially when it comes to debt. Be sure you and your soon-to-be put the credit cards on the table before walking down the aisle. Marriage is a life partnership; start by dealing with your debt together. You’ll head into your new life as a married couple with ease when you have an open and honest dialog about your financial situation. Parting Thoughts

Hello Spring! WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY DEBRA CAFFEY

B

y the time March arrives, I have grown weary of the cloudy, damp days of winter. As the days warm, I begin my eager search for the signs of the new season to give me that last, little bit of energy to make it through until the promise of spring takes firm hold. Where I live, there are several hallmarks that let me know that spring is just around the corner, but my favorite is the wisteria arbor that blankets the sidewalk in front of our home. The fragrant, lavender blossoms grow intense when warmed by the sun, and they tell me that it’s almost time for a change. Along with the quince and the redbud trees, it bursts forth in heavy, perfumed clusters on naked branches that shade the passage of walkers, runners and bikers as the green foliage waits to unfurl from its nap. Spring is my invitation to take time to stop and smell the roses to fully appreciate the gifts of each new day. It is my time to sit on the patio in the morning and watch the cardinals and sparrows flit through the trees in search of the perfect nesting spots for their new families or to listen to the frogs as they chirp from the greenbelt creek on the other side of my fence at sunset. My passion for the outdoors reignites and beckons me to amble leisurely through it or to enjoy a ride on my bike - always with my camera stashed and ready in the event that I have the good for-

tune to stumble upon some new treasure to be captured in the still frames of digital images. They are my proof of the wonders that await me if only I am willing to see. Like a little boy rushing back to his mom with rocks and snails in his pockets, I return home to see what prizes I might have frozen in time that day, and I long to share them with someone else who will find the same kind of pleasure that I do in the beauty that I’ve discovered right here in my own back yard. Each discovery is my assurance that there is something greater than myself, and I delight in the unique design and colors of each one. On the exterior, spring also reflects the inner signs of my own change. I am aware of my spirit’s renewal following the season of rest that winter offers. I am enthusiastic and energized for the unknown challenges and adventures that undoubtedly loom ahead of me. I am strengthened for the busyness of life that comes with the fresh air and sunshine as I am hurtled into summer. Perhaps more than anything, spring elicits gratitude for the abundance of good in my life even when times have been a little (or a lot) tough. It leaves me in awe of the perfectly-timed and never-changing cycles that offer me the promise that I will always have an opportunity to begin again – always.
