Here to Help You Rebuild Your Life® Text messages are a common way of communicating. Instead of picking up the phone or drafting an email, many like the ease and quickness of sending a text. For this reason, many clients text their lawyer in a divorce or family law matter. Text communications can be short and to the point. Clients can also attach photos and videos to texts. Is texting an effective form of communication for clients going through a divorce or family law matter? There are no black and white rules in terms of texting. There are also no rules or statutes that explicitly prohibit lawyers from texting their clients per se. Some lawyers might be willing to text their clients, while other lawyers might not want to do so. Some lawyers may not even be tech-savvy enough to text with their clients. First, texting is often short and to the point, as explained above. The lawyer or the client could misinterpret the shortness of the communication, causing miscommunication, an increase in fees, or frustration. Many conversations instead require a lot more dialogue and analysis than a short text message exchange. Second, texting is not always the most secure way of communication. Texting is not encrypted communication. This fact makes it easier for others to intercept or read the conversation. Third, it is possible a client puts the phone down and somebody else picks it up and reads the communication. With texts, it can be quick and easy to see recent communication and attorney-client privilege could be jeopardized. Fourth, text communication often does not make its way into a client’s file. It can be hard for a lawyer to print

Should I Text My Lawyer? off the texts and actually get them into the file. It can be cumbersome for the law firm or lawyer (and expensive for the client in terms of legal fees) to print the text communications. Thus, when a client requests their file at the end of the case, the texts might not be there. As it relates to important matters, the client may want that text communication if they did not retain it on their own device. Fifth, text communication lacks the formality of other types of communication. The lack of formality can cause some clients to say things spontaneously to their lawyer. This can be damaging to the attorney-client relationship if they are upset or angry about something. Email is typically more secure because it is encrypted. Email is also a bit more formal and allows for lengthier communication. The lengthier communication can often lead to better and more effective communication. Additionally, it is easier for a lawyer to print off an email chain and put that chain into the client file. For most clients, they appreciate this on the back-end when the case is over. Finally, while texting is easy and convenient, with most smartphones, a client can send an email just as quickly as a text. In terms of convenience, sending an email versus a text is comparable. Of course, phone calls, video conferences, or in-person meetings can often be more effective than email or text communication. While many clients want instant answers in the heat of the moment, if the situation can wait, the best communication can often take place by phone, video conference, or in-person.

2. Pay down loans If you’re in debt and wondering how to climb out of the debt pile, I recommend you start by taking an inventory of all loans—write down all of the various credit cards and loans, then rank them from the lowest balance to the highest balance. After reviewing and fine-tuning your budget, you’ll want to designate extra money and apply it to the lowest balance owed. By paying off the lowest balance first, it will free up those extra payments, consequently allowing the payment you were making on the first loan to be applied to the second-lowest balance.

BECAUSE THE ECONOMY IS LEFT IN SHAMBLES. As we come to the end of 2020 and to the start of a fresh year, it’s beneficial we take a personal financial inventory, including

and stressful debt. Here are four helpful tips to successfully pay off your debt in 2021:

Repeat this to the third-lowest balance, and continue until all loans are paid in full. This method is called the “snowball method,” and it’s been used by numerous people successfully over the years to get out of debt much sooner.

3. Don’t get discouraged If you’re having trouble staying on-track, do the best you can, and get back on track as soon as possible. Don’t let one setback derail you from your financial ambitions!

4. Fight the temptation Stay away from the temptation to pile on more debt once you free up some cash flow. Avoid spending extra funds on other “things.” Involve your family—get everybody on board to celebrate even your smallest successes. We can end 2020 on a good note by developing a debt reduction plan. It can go a long way in turning a challenging year to a hopeful one...one that can lay the foundation for a better year ahead and the years to come.

Kindred Spirits Culture + Cocktails NEW BAR CONCEPT IN OKC'S HISTORIC NE SIDE CELEBRATES AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY & COMMUNITY IN OKLAHOMA

Even the bathrooms share Oklahoma's black history. The walls are lined with The Black Dispatch, which was one of the first African American newspapers in the state. Another bathroom is lined with pages from The Green Book, an historic travel guide for African-Americans.

to get back in the spring. You’ll spend a month or two trying to spring back in shape,” said Ron Price, head golf pro at Rose Creek. “There are a few things you can do during the winter to be ahead of everybody else who didn’t do anything. Full body stretching is the best because your body, especially for older folks, will get really tight and make it difficult to do those golf moves you need to do.” To set you up for winter flexibility, we asked the folks at Rose Creek Golf Course, 17031 N May Ave, to customize a stretching routine specifically for golfers. Here are six moves from Golf Pro Steve Burger that’ll get you loose and limber — and keep your game tight.
