Lifestyle Letter

Celebrate your home. I

n the kitchen of my childhood home, hanging right next to the stove, was a small porcelain plate with a picture of a neat white house on it. Above that house engraved in silver were the words “Home Is Where the Heart Is.” For some reason I always loved that little plate, and over the years it grew to be a comforting presence for me, always reminding me that here, in my home, I was protected from the world. I remember staring at it blurry-eyed on my first day of kindergarten, finding solace in the words after a bad day at school, and finally holding it in my shaking hands as I prepared to leave for college. Now that I have lived away from my childhood home for a while, I’ve had time to think about what really makes a house a home. For me, what makes it truly special is not the actual physical space, but the memories created within that space. Whether it be building pillow forts as a kid, staying up late with friends in a college dorm, furnishing your first apartment or bringing your own child back from the hospital, finding a place to call home is all about filling it with the people that matter most. And there is no better time to remember the importance of having a house filled with love, laughter and lasting memories than Thanksgiving. It’s a holiday dedicated to filling the kitchen with the warm aroma of roasting turkey, catching up with family at the dining room table and cherishing all those rare, special moments spent with loved ones throughout the day. As our November issue is all about the home, I invite you to take a peak inside a magnificent desert retreat tucked into the Mummy Mountains and find inspiration for your own home with expert interior design tips from Lauren Rautbord.

A Bountiful Thanksgiving CHEF BEAU MACMILLAN CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAY WITH A TASTE-TEMPTING MENU ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

E

xecutive Chef Beau MacMillan, from elements at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort, grew up in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the home of the first Thanksgiving. So, it’s not surprising that his favorite season is autumn and his favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. He loves the comfort foods, sauces and spices that the season brings. Chef Beau incorporates fresh, local ingredients to enhance the flavor of the food without masking it. He has spent the last 30 years developing his craft and says that the preparation of food is always evolving and he’s always learning. His creative culinary skills have gained him much recognition locally, as well as being on Food Network programs. THE GREAT HARVEST

A lot has changed since the Pilgrims’ first Great Harvest, where those who survived the journey and that first harsh winter celebrated with the Native Americans who had taught them how to fish, hunt and what crops to plant. The holiday hasn’t really changed throughout the centuries, as we still celebrate it by sharing food with family and friends and giving thanks for our many blessings. “Food is one of life’s most sensual pleasures,” states Chef Beau. “There’s nothing better than celebrating food with those you love.” THANKSGIVING DAY FEAST

Chef Beau and his catering team begin prepping for the holiday dinner three days in advance. He prepares 40 turkeys, as well as 12

other items, including meats and seafood. The traditional turkey dinner usually includes his famous New England chestnut stuffing, Brussels sprouts, pumpkin cheddar bisque soup, mashed potatoes, apple cranberry relish and, of course, gravy. This year’s Thanksgiving Day menu will include a tantalizing selection of appetizers, salads, entrées and desserts. Appetizers may include caramelized fig and balsamic onion tart; escargot pot pie; roasted pumpkin and white cheddar bisque; and cauliflower panna cotta. A choice of entrees may include a traditional turkey dinner, seafood options, veal, beef and vegetarian dishes. The grand finale will include an assortment of scrumptious desserts to choose from. A detailed Thanksgiving Day menu can be found on the resort’s website. As you celebrate Thanksgiving this year, Chef Beau has some advice for every man who loves football. “Tape it!” He recommends you enjoy the day with your family and friends and participate in the cooking and the day’s festivities. He doesn’t want anyone to lose sight of what the holiday signifies by getting stressed out. “It shouldn’t feel like a chore, but rather a blessing with everyone pitching in,” shares Chef Beau. “Yes, that’s how wonderful memories are made.”

Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona IT ONLY TAKES ONE PERSON TO FULFILL MANY DREAMS ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

K

athy Pechman, senior vice president at National Bank of Arizona (NB|AZ), enjoys volunteering for Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona (HFHCAZ) in her free time. When on a job site, she’s known as a “blue shirt.” The role of the "blue shirt" is to check-in and coordinate with volunteers, assuring that no tools or coffee cups are left on ladders and that everyone who needs to wear a mask is using one. She helps keep volunteers on the project safe. “It’s all about affordable housing for me. It’s something I’ve been passionate about since I got my own first home,” says Pechman. “There's a pride of ownership. And when you see someone realize that dream, someone who thought home ownership might never happen for them, that's what makes being involved with Habitat so rewarding.” Pechman has been with NB|AZ since 2005, but the bank has been a supporter of the nonprofit organization long before then.

“National Bank of Arizona plays several key roles; as a group of volunteers, as a donor and as a supporting bank for us,” says Todd Rogers, chief strategy officer for HFHCAZ. “They also provide key community leaders to help us grow and thrive as an organization.” Recently, Pechman played an instrumental role in developing HFHCAZ’s five-year-plan by chairing the strategic planning committee. She also interviews potential board members alongside other committee members and encourages bank employees to volunteer whenever they can. This past April, NB|AZ held a statewide volunteer day. Painting a home for a Habitat family was one of the activities of choice and more than 25 NB|AZ employees participated. “Kathy is a dynamic and passionate lady who really wants to help make the world a better place,” says Rogers. “She’s a bundle of laughs and always keeps things light hearted, yet at the same time, she’s an CONTINUED >

effective community leader who knows how to get things done. She’s a voice of reason who is caring and compassionate.” IT BEGINS AT HOME

Pechman’s involvement with HFHCAZ began in 2010, when NB|AZ donated a home to the program. Many bank employees volunteered to help rehabilitate the home and Pechman was one of them. She volunteered every Saturday for seven weeks as a “blue shirt” alongside 25 different bank employees each week. She was impressed by the bank volunteers and how they took in the family, and equally impressed by the family and how they worked for their home. She was also impressed with the nonprofit organization as a whole and made a home, so to speak, for herself within it. Pechman recalls one of the days she volunteered. She was ready to carry out her role for the day when another woman showed up to be the site “blue shirt” too. “I found out that she was a Habitat home owner and volunteers every Saturday because that’s how gratified she is to be a home owner. Every family is grateful. Habitat doesn't just give the home away; the family has to put in their own sweat equity too. They aren’t getting something; they are earning something,” says Pechman. “I just love Habitat, I always have. It’s really a good organization.”

BUILT UPON HOPE AND LOVE

Habitat for Humanity’s vision is simple. They want a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Peruse their website and you’ll come across Courtesy of Habitat for Humanity photos of wooden beams Central Arizona adorned with well wishes for the families. Rogers also explained that they host wallsigning ceremonies where families and volunteers write kind words on the wood, walls and floors. “Once the house is built, the families remember that deep beneath the drywall and paint those words are the core and structure of their home. These homes are built upon hope and love,” says Rogers. Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona is currently accepting applications for their Reconstruct Program. DESIGNER LAUREN RAUTBORD SHARES HER SECRETS FOR CREATING ELEGANT INTERIORS ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

L

auren Rautbord did not just choose to be a leader in the design world. She was raised for it from the very beginning. “My mother was always one of Chicago's most stylish and elegant women,” says Rautbord, co-founder of Paul Lauren Design Consultants. “From the time I was a little girl, I noticed all the little things she did to bring beauty to even the simplest things. Every table was dressed to perfection and all of our stuffed animals were positioned as if they were in conversation. She taught me how taste and refinement were not faddish, but classic and enduring.” While that special childhood fostered her love of the industry, it was time spent honing her skills at the renowned Harrington Institute of Interior Design where she was able to transform that passion into a career. Shortly after graduation she had the opportunity to work alongside Paul Marchetti, an already established and highly-regarded Chicago designer. The two quickly realized that they complimented each other well, and in 1995 the Chicago-based Paul Lauren Design Consultants was formed. “A well executed design should look collected, not decorated,” explains Rautbord, describing her own theories of style and design. She shares that her personal style can range from 18

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | November 2015

minimalistic to multilayered, and is usually characterized by a graciousness and understated beauty that she attributes to her Midwestern influences. “I utilize clean lines and dramatic silhouettes but do so with an extremely neutral palette, without a lot of color or pattern to distract from the furnishings. The layering of fine fabrics, linen, cashmere, silk and leather creates a sophisticated, undecorated and more modern aesthetic. Restraint is key to keeping spaces uncluttered!” Though Lauren was able to help build Paul Lauren Design Consultants into a premier firm within the Chicago design arena, on a personal level, there was something that continually pulled her to the openness of the American West. Over the years she established a second home here in Arizona, but as time went on it became clear that her heart was pulling her to reside permanently in the Valley. After making the move in 2013, Lauren decided to hold off on opening a new office in the Phoenix area, instead focusing on first building a client base so she could organically discover where might be the best location to offer the most convenience for her clients. She immediately noticed a core of her business stemming from Silverleaf, DC Ranch, and the various golf communities in the northeast

Hanging with Quality Since 1984

“Our Family Values Bring You The Value You Deserve!” metro area, so locating her office in North Scottsdale only made sense. In August of this year, Paul Lauren Design Consultants opened their new Arizona location just off of Bell Road, near the 101. In an effort to anticipate all of her clients’ needs throughout the course of a project, the space includes a large warehouse to help store furniture and other finishes on an interim basis, so clients don’t have to worry about the hassle of accepting deliveries or orchestrating offsite storage. Lauren Rautbord is thankful that she has been able to craft a career that has allowed her to help people achieve their desire to make their home an expression of their individuality. Yet, with the abundance of resources and information available in magazines and across the internet, skeptics still constantly ask her why they should use a designer. “Our homes are our personal sanctuaries, and most people care very deeply about how they create their interior space,” says Rautbord. “My first job is to understand what the client really wants and needs out of the experience. My second job is to educate them on the realities and complexities of the marketplace and working with contractors. My third and most important job is to translate that into a customized experience and business relationship that will be fun, fair, rewarding and successful.”

For larger gatherings, an expansive outdoor entertaining area, complete with a cozy fireplace and dining area overlooking the mountains, provides the perfect spot for hosting an evening soiree under the stars. This classic home is the perfect place to find peace, quiet and relaxation, all while enjoying the beauty and splendor of Paradise Valley. A truly remarkable desert haven.Â

NEWLY-REMODELED SCOTTSDALE PLAZA RESORT SAYS

Perfect Spot for Out-of-Town Guests ARTICLE ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

B

elieve it or not, the holidays are just around the corner. Along with the inevitable reappearance of decorative Santas and Menorahs, Christmas trees and toys-a-plenty, chances are good at least one relative will appear at the door, ready for some yuletide cheer. While readying the guest room and entertaining Aunt Sally and Uncle Bob at your home is always an option, you could also start a new holiday tradition this year by encouraging your guests to stay at the newly-renovated Scottsdale Plaza Resort.

RESORT HISTORY

The Scottsdale Plaza Resort first opened nearly four decades ago, says Sheryl Bettencourt, director of marketing. The resort, which sits on 40 lovely landscaped acres in the shadow of Camelback Mountain, features 404 guest rooms, including 180 elegant suites. In addition to being the only independently owned and operated resort in the Valley, Bettencourt says some of the employees have worked there almost since the beginning. “Because of this we have so many long standing relationships with returning guests, and we go out of our way to treat everyone like one of the family,” she says. The Scottsdale Plaza Resort is an ideal place for holiday guests to stay, Bettencourt says, because the resort’s five categories of room styles means there is something for every family. This is especially true for the resort’s Suites—the Patio, Bi-Level and Villas all have wet bars, in-room refrigerators and separate living rooms, she says. Many even have beehive fireplaces to help add to the ambiance of a cozy winter retreat. “It’s a home away from home at holiday times,” she says. NEWLY RENOVATED

The recently-completed renovations focused on the standard category of rooms, Bettencourt says. They included replacing bathtubs with glass walled showers and putting in new flooring by Heritage Interiors throughout the vanity and shower areas. The rooms now feature new lighting, and the closet and vanity bathroom areas were both expanded to offer guests more square footage, Bettencourt says, along with updated plumbing fixtures by Kohler. The renovation also included adding desks by Living Spaces and new accent chairs for the

rooms’ seating areas, as well as framed and lighted vanity mirrors by Electric Mirrors. The eye-catching granite on the wet bars and vanities is from Arizona Tile, Bettencourt says, and the brushed nickel hardware in the rooms was made by Ferguson. To add to the usable space of the rooms, televisions are now mounted on the walls, and the standard category rooms now feature in-room refrigerators. If guests are not part of the holiday game plan, The Scottsdale Plaza Resort is a great choice for Valley families who want to take a “staycation” during the hustle and bustle of the season. Instead of rushing back home after a long day of holiday shopping, local families can book a room at The Scottsdale Plaza Resort and enjoy relaxing together. Kids will be sure to get a kick out of the Turkish cotton robes, which are included in all guest rooms and suites, and will enjoy hanging out with mom and dad as everyone watches an in-room movie. FAMILY-FRIENDLY, FESTIVE

To help ring in the holiday season, Bettencourt says the resort is always extensively decorated with beautiful trees and plenty of festive décor, including lights and floral arrangements that will delight both kids and adults. “Floral Designs by Jeremiah has been creating our holiday décor for over 25 years,” she says. The resort also offers plenty of activities for local families and their visiting relatives to enjoy. Guests can use one of the resort’s five outdoor heated and sparkling pools as well as enjoy some serious pampering time at the on-site salon and day spa. For people who have enjoyed a bit too many holiday cookies and egg nog, the resort’s tennis courts, fitness center and putting green will give them the opportunity to burn off those extra calories while engaging in some good natured competition. Once everyone is hungry again, Bettencourt says, people can head over to Remington’s for a special holiday dinner. From its beautifully-appointed rooms, lovely views of Camelback and Mummy Mountains and amenities galore to its welcoming staff and gorgeous holiday decorations, The Scottsdale Plaza Resort offers a welcoming sanctuary from the busyness of the upcoming season. The Scottsdale Plaza Resort is located at 7200 N. Scottsdale Rd., in Scottsdale. For more information, visit ScottsdalePlaza.com. November 2015 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

Painting a Colorful Tradition BONNER DAVID GALLERIES HONORS THE LEGACY OF AMERICAN WOMEN ARTISTS ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY KATHERINE LEMKE WASTE

F

or well over a decade, Bonner David Galleries has been helping define the Downtown Scottsdale Art District. Founded in 2002, Bonner David was the first in the city to introduce the idea of a duel gallery space, where they would have a dedicated area to represent both traditional and contemporary artists and works. “We think you can mix those just as well as anything because everybody’s art taste is eclectic,” explains Clark Olson, one of the gallery’s founding partners. Building a reputation for being artist-centric has been vital to the Bonner David model as well. Citing a trend in the industry toward the under-repetition of female artists in both museum and gallery settings, they made it a goal to try and consistently represent just as many female artists as they do male. That is also why it is fitting that Bonner David was selected to host the 25th Annual American Women Artists Masters & Signatures Member Show & National Juried Exhibition. The exhibition will be on display from November 12-30, and will feature over a hundred works of art by members of the American Women Artists (AWA). There will also be three days of workshops taught by members of the AWA in partnership with the Scottsdale Artists School, as well as a free symposium open to the public at the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts that will examine the cur24

rent state of the world of art from the perspective of women artists. Kicking off the exhibition will be an awards ceremony hosted by the Museum of the West, which will not only celebrate 25 years of the event, but also honor three of AWA’s founding members, Arizona painter Joni Falk, Texas artist Donna Howell-Sickles and New Mexico sculptor Star York. “This show just really seemed like the perfect opportunity to put our money where our mouth is by being able to showcase female artists,” says Clark. “What you will see at the show is the very best work from female artists across the country.” For the silver anniversary of the AWA Exhibition, the event returns to its desert roots; the inaugural exhibit was hosted by the Tucson Museum of Art in 1990. “Because this was the 25th anniversary, we knew we wanted it to be special, and we knew we wanted to bring it back to Arizona,” explains AWA Board President, Kathrine Lemke Waste. “Not just Bonner David, but everyone involved has just been terrific as hosts and in doing what they can to help our organization bring our members and our art to your community.” More details regarding the American Women Artists Exhibition can be found at AmericanWomenArtisits.org, while more information about Bonner David Galleries can found at BonnerDavid.com.

DEEP CULTURAL ROOTS INSPIRE THE ARTISTIC DESIGNS OF TABARKA STUDIO ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELLI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

lifestyle brand with a focus on luxury surfaces, Tabarka Studio has been handcrafting custom terracotta tiles since their debut in 2000. Helmed by Creative Director Meir Zenati, the brand’s designs for their handmade tiles are rooted in an array of vibrant world cultures, while the time-honored artisan process used to create them embodies the very essence of craftsmanship; making for timeless pieces that fit very well into any setting. AN INSPIRED HISTORY

Ever since he was a boy, Zenati had always been captivated by the sheer beauty and rich history of artisanal work—a passion that would only grow with time and eventually lead him to his lifelong career. “When I was very young in Israel, I would visit the Bedouins in the desert near my home and be captivated by their carpets and artifacts,” recalls Zenati. “On a visit to Istanbul, I found these tiles that were centuries old, almost hidden under a pile of rugs. That moment changed the course of my career forever, and it’s the memory of those tiles that makes me passionate about this craft.” The rest was history. Zenati continued to cultivate his passion for artisan work, starting a company in Mexico that worked with furniture and pottery. However, it was their small line of tile-topped tables that really drew in the crowds, inspiring them to curate a tile collection. That first tile collection was named Tabarka, after the location in Tunisia famous for it’s pottery, and from there Tabarka Studio was born—starting off as a small production and growing into a well-respected name with topnotch, quality work and inspiring designs.

DESIGN THEORY

At heart of his work is Zenati’s passion for design, as he constantly finds inspiration in both the everyday and the unexpected, striving to tell a unique story with each collection. “Everyday I either sketch something new or work on making prototypes,” says Zenati of his work at Tabarka. Also an avid traveler, many of his earlier tile collections are rooted in different geographic areas around the world and feature exquisite colors and authentic detailing from each culture. Take, for instance, their Maghreb, Mediterranean, Paris Metro and L’Est collections. All are strongly influenced by different cultures, yet make an effortless transition into modern American homes. Recently, Zenati has been researching and working with new materials to incorporate into his designs, a perfect example being Tabarka’s new Petite Alliance Collection, which creates breathtaking surfaces by mixing wood and stone. “We have incorporated wood and stone into our collections, and I’m very intrigued by that,” he says. ARTISAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

As for Tabarka’s signature terracotta tiles, they are still handmade and detailed by a team of skilled artists that use the same artisan process the company adopted when it first started. “The terracotta bisque is made by hand in Mexico in the traditional way, and our finish technique is very different from standard glazing,” explains Zenati. Still rooted in authentic artisan craft processes with designs inspired by world cultures and the mixing of new materials, all of Tabarka’s creations are sure to inspire for many years to come. Parting Thoughts

Home WORDS MOLLY WILLIAMS

C

hildhood homes are much more than our first stop on this earth. They are where we learn our names, take our first steps, come to love our family, and also who we are. My first home was a sturdy ranch in a now aging post-war subdivision. Although it seemed huge and completely familiar to me then, when I drive by it now, it looks like all the other tidy tracts of its era, indistinguishable on its block. Since my first house, I have lived in two other homes with my parents, a number of dorm rooms, the sorority house in my college town, six different apartments around the city, and two houses of my own. But nothing has had the pull of that first home. In the memory box of that house lives the thudding of my brothers rough housing in the hallway, the smell of my mother’s fresh baked bread and the taste of the strawberries that escaped under the chainlength fence of the sweet elderly neighbors to the rear of us. I can still hear my dad whistling in the garage and the dog’s toenails scratching at the door to let me in from the backyard. Although I spent less than 10 years in that house, they were important ones, and the memories formed there still linger in my everyday life. My husband and I moved into our current house three months 34

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | November 2015

before our daughter was born. Although the current plan is to plant the “For Sale” sign as soon as the U-Haul pulls away for college, by then she will have spent her entire childhood in this house. Before I am ready, she will leave the room she made hers at three days old; its walls have made the paint progression from baby girl pink to tween green and young lady lavender. Here is the hallway where she took her first steps, the bedroom door she slammed with all her 13-year-old fury and the kitchen counters she no longer needs as a stool to reach the baking pans when we make Christmas cookies. Outside is the rainy sidewalk where she broke her arm on a treacherous two-wheeler, the trees she climbed, the playhouse now overgrown with weeds, the block she took long thoughtful walks around. And the front porch light, under which she may eventually kiss a boy. Wherever we are, she will always have a home, of course. I know my independent girl will make her own lovely world around her. But I am glad we will have given her what my parents gave me. Wherever she lives, she will take with her the memory of home, to be opened over and over again like a gift.
