arker Lifestyle is all about supporting our local community. So with the holiday season in full gear, we want you to remember to buy local this December and have some fun along the way. To create that fun and encourage community spirit, we are hosting a scavenger hunt and encouraging you all to play. Please visit as many of the businesses listed in this magazine’s Scavenger Hunt page as you can. You also can go to CloudKnocker.com and search for Parker Lifestyle to upload all of the participating businesses. You can then bookmark that page to your phone. When you visit these local businesses, pick up the special activity page waiting for you and take a selfie of yourself in the store. Post your selfie on Parker Lifestyle's Facebook page to be entered into a drawing for prizes that will given away at our event on January 9, 2016. You can also enter the drawing by bringing your activity sheets to our Healthy Lifestyle Celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on January 9 at Koko FitClub of Parker, 18671 Mainstreet. The more selfies and activity sheets you collect and submit, the more chances you have to win a fabulous prize! And, when you attend the Healthy Lifestyle Celebration, you’ll get the opportunity to learn about a variety of ways you and your family members can live a healthy lifestyle in 2016. Will you become a runner, a triathlete, a tennis player, or attend some of the many classes and activities at Parker’s newly upgraded Rec Center or Fieldhouse? PARKER POLICE WEAR BODY CAMERAS Parker Police officers are now equipped with body-worn cameras. “These cameras reinforce our dedication to transparency and commitment to quality service,” says Parker Police Chief David King. While other organizations are coming under scrutiny for their body-worn camera policy, the Parker Police Department is receiving national support after working with the ACLU to ensure the rights of both officers and citizens. “Our collaborative effort resulted in what the ACLU believes to be one of the best policies in the country,” says ACLU Public Policy Director Denise Maes. Body-worn cameras increase the accountability of both officers and community members. National studies on the use of such devices have shown a drop in use-of-force by officers and an even larger drop in complaints against officers. The recorded video may also be used as evidence in court proceedings.

rtists from the Parker Artists Guild (PAG) will display and sell their best work at the PACE Center’s Bellco Credit Union Art Gallery

through January 8, 2016. The Parker Artists Guild Annual Show includes 55 pieces of artwork selected by Rose Fredrick, the curator for the PACE Center, who looked at approximately 120 submissions. “All the work submitted - paintings, sculpture, mosaic and photography - was strong, which made the decision-making much more interesting,” Fredrick says. “On my initial review of images submitted for consideration, I was looking for the best one or two works from each artist. Once I culled the entries, I then considered how all the individual pieces would flow together in one show. The end result, I believe, is quite dynamic.” With the theme “Within My 20-Mile Radius,” the criteria was pretty broad

and loose, Fredrick says. Haya kawa ’s year's mixed med ia sub show , “ D ep m arture ission for this 2 .”

“I wanted to give artists enough room that they could feel comfortable in their own medium,” she says. “ The theme also gives people a chance to wander, yet have some grounding within this region. And I was hoping too that when artists thought about that theme, they might reflect on what they’ve overlooked right in their own backyards.” Of course, she says, she also wanted to make sure the show included quality workmanship, a good variety and showed off each artist’s voice. “Each work of art needs to have its own voice,” she says. “That’s something I looked for no matter what show I’m working on; I want to have a strong sense of an artist’s individual voice.” Most of the displayed artwork is for sale, with the price listed alongside each piece. In addition, first-, second- and third-place awards, as well as honorable mentions, have been awarded in each category, such as 3-D, oils, etc. The works, including a Best of Show, were judged by Marianne Mitchell, a noted artist who teaches and lectures at the Art Students League of Denver.

PAG holds regular art shows at the PACE Center and Mainstreet Gallery. For the PACE show, the largest one of the year, the artists are encouraged to submit work that revolves around the theme. This year ’s display is vast, representing many of the mediums used by the guild’s approximately 200 members, including glass and wood, 3-D, mixed media, watercolors, oils, acrylic and landscape paintings, photographs, abstract art, metal work and sculptures. “I am truly delighted about this year’s show," Fredrick says. "I think it’s full of surprises.” Guild members come from across the Denver metro area and as far away as Colorado Springs, Pueblo and Estes Park. t’s the time of year many Coloradans long for: ski season. The state offers some of the best resorts in the nation, but if you’re looking for a more affordable, intimate experience this season, you might want to head out to the “Colorado Gems” – eight resorts that are promoted as being free of crowds, free of lift lines and free of hassle. With “down-to-earth prices” and free parking, these lesser-known resorts offer a great alternative to the more pricey and crowded ski resorts. And if you purchase a $20 Gems Card by February 29, 2016, you’ll get some even better deals, including 2-for-1 lift tickets at each of the eight Gem resorts. Information about these facilities can be found at ColoradoSki.com/ Gems , which also was the source for much of the following information about these eight treasures: ARAPAHOE BASIN

While A-Basin provides terrain worthy of expert skiers, it also has learning areas for beginners of all ages, including a Kids Center. This season’s additions include the Black Mountain Express, a high-speed quad chairlift that provides access to the upper mountain in less than three minutes. Info: ArapahoeBasin.com

STYLISH DRESSING FOR THE HOLIDAYS IT’S AS EASY AS SNAP, SPARKLE, POP!

ARTICLE MARLA SMITH

P

lanning to wear your go-to LBT (little black dress) for parties and gatherings this holiday season? Yearning to put your prettiest foot forward without breaking the bank? With the myriad of ways to spike the style meter on any wardrobe basic these days, we say yes to the dress - and more! SPARKLE NOTES

The Great Gatsby’s Daisy Buchanan would be thrilled to see the options available for upping the bling factor and elegantly standing out at any soiree this season. Delicate rhinestone, crystal, lace and pearl headbands are everywhere and instantly create a romantic look. These vintage-inspired accessories are all the rage. Decorous headbands come in a multitude of looks, but the underlying factor is decidedly feminine and elegant. Wear them to sleek back your tresses or as an accent when wearing your hair in the currently popular ‘tuck and cover’ hairstyle. Pinterest is filled with ideas to pull of this lovely hair accessory. Search for “sparkly headbands” and prepare to be dazzled. GO BIG OR GO HOME

There’s no shortage of gorgeous statement necklaces, bracelets and belts to help you take it up a notch on the look-at-me scale. Classically tailored dresses, tops and suits look extra-special and unique with these beauties. Statement accessories come in all shapes and sizes and are a budget-friendly way of adding serious style to your look. 22

BOWS AND BAUBLES FOR YOUR FEET

DETAILS… DETAILS

Peep-toe shoes never seem to go out of style and make any outfit a little more ‘modern retro.’ Be sure your toes look their best with a fresh pedicure before stepping out in any open toe shoe or sandal. Prefer your comfy pumps? Try clipping on a pair of shoe clips for a touch of extra flair. These ingenious little beauties come in a variety styles - from ornate bows and flowers to more sedate gold and silver buckles.

Finish off your holiday look with a manicure in this year’s Color of the Year: marsala. This rich hue looks good on everyone regardless of whether you like your nails long or short. Bring luster to your locks by spritzing on a hair shine product just before you walk out the door. Make sure your shoes are shined (buffing sponges are easily found at local stores). A smoky eye works well in dim light, and you’ll be sure to glow when powdering your nose, neck and décolletage with a pretty pink shimmer powder.

A POP OF COLOR NEVER HURTS

Quickly and easily bring cheer to any outfit by adding a pop of color. A beautiful silk scarf in persimmon makes a camel colored coat look downright stunning. Or look like a million bucks in that understated black or gray dress by accessorizing with anything the color of your eyes. You’ll look lively and fun and your eyes will sparkle.

JUST COMPETING ISN’T ENOUGH FOR DAVID HAGGERTY NEW PONDEROSA PRINCIPAL ALWAYS STRIVES FOR THE BEST ARTICLE SUSAN CORMIER | PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA BERRA

P

onderosa High School’s new principal doesn’t accept mediocre. In fact, David Haggerty continually talks about being the best. It’s been a theme that has been a part of his life since his own high school years in New York, where the school’s motto was “always beat the best to be the best.” As he leads Douglas County’s smallest comprehensive high school with 1,250 students, he says encouraging students to be the best is what he does. Take the football team. The players can talk about conference championships at their 20 year reunion, he says, but if you win a state championship, you talk about that for a lifetime, even when you’re not at your 20-year reunion. "It’s all about expectations. Are we going for a small expectation” or striving to be the best? he asks. Haggerty was a teacher, assistant principal and principal during his 17 years as an

24

educator in North Carolina before coming to Ponderosa, where he began work on July 6. Since he has served in leadership roles before, he says he knows not to make any huge changes until he’s gotten a good feel for the school and what is needed. “I’ve told people this is not my first rodeo,” he says. “I’ve always learned that you come in and you get a feel for what’s going on. You don’t want to make too many major changes.” However, one of his early goals is to “upgrade and update our theater, facility-wise. That is one of the things that we’re working on with parents.” The transition to Ponderosa has been fairly smooth. “Ponderosa has a lot of traditions. The school I was at was 100 years old, so I knew what I was dealing with when it came to tradition and a great school and community,” he says. “It was similar to what I was in already, especially academically. I felt very comfortable at Ponderosa.”

He also brings an energetic, compromising leadership style as he works to prepare students for life beyond high school. “I’m very involved,” he says. “I’m a very open person. Parents have found out that they can see me any time they’d like. I’m not a big appointment person. Parents have tested that, and it’s worked out well. We’re going to do what’s best for kids, what’s best for students,” he says. “I’m a compromiser and willing to work on things. And make things work. If it can’t work, we’ll find some other way to make it work the right way. “ But, of course, the ultimate goal for the near future and five years out is to be the best. “My goal is always to be the best at everything that we are, so my goal always in five years is to be the top academically, athletically, activity-wise,” he says, noting that he also wants to be able "to share how we do things because we want everyone to be the best. It’s always a goal – to be the best.”

Better Living Through Technology YOUR PRODUCTIVITY DATA – STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING YOUR DIGITAL LIFE

O

ARTICLE DENISE RIVAS

ne of my primary goals as a promoter of better living through technology is to help people use their various electronic devices without anxiety, struggle, or duplication of effort or data. I strongly believe in a system of record for information in which all records of a certain type are stored in the same place in a consistent way that supports easy retrieval on any device. Once you make the leap from using a paper calendar, address book and datebook, your productivity data - which includes your email, calendar, address book and to-do lists - should synchronize across your electronic devices so you are up-to-date and never forced to enter an appointment or phone number more than once. It’s easy to wind up with several accounts for your productivity data. For example, some of us might have a Comcast email address, an Apple ID, a Google or Gmail ID, another account for our cell phone carrier, etc. We often don’t notice which accounts are used for what functions until we replace a computer or smartphone and discover that data appears to be missing or duplicated.

SO WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO APPROACH PRODUCTIVITY DATA?

Choose and use a complete productivity suite. There are a number of options that include email, contacts, calendars and task management. Most are free. If you have an email address that ends in @gmail.com, @hotmail.com, @msn. com, @outlook.com, @icloud.com or one of many others, you may already have the building blocks in place for a complete productivity data strategy. Which one of these is best for you depends, in part, on your existing and future preferences for computers, software, smartphones and tablets. For example, devices with

26

Parker Lifestyle | December 2015

Android operating systems are designed to tie in tightly to Google or Gmail accounts; Apple devices are happiest when they’re tied to Apple accounts; and Microsoft’s Outlook software is designed to synchronize with Microsoft accounts. Productivity suites are typically cloud-based services, where your data is stored on the company’s computers and accessible to you securely over the Internet. This strategy means your data remains intact even if your device is unavailable. You always have the option of logging on to your account from any internet browser to send an email, check your calendar, etc. There are additional benefits. For example, when you send an email, your contacts or address book should be connected to your email account so that you can choose a name from the list. When you receive an e-invitation, your email account should allow you to automatically place the event on your calendar. One final note: separate your work from your personal productivity data. If you change employers, you are likely to lose your company email address and any contacts, calendar appointments and to-do lists. It is best to have a permanent, portable account that stays with you personally, separate from any employer.

Coffee Cabin

A Perfect Example of Community WORDS KELLY VELTRIE | PICTURES TED VELTRIE AND PROVIDED

W

hen I reflect on community and what it means to be “inspired by community,” I can’t help but think of Wesley Crespi at the Coffee Cabin. As you pull up to order your coffee, you are greeted with an enthusiastic and energetic welcome. While Wes will gladly sell you a favorite beverage, he also wants to get to know you. Wes moved here from Brooklyn, N.Y., 15 years ago, and he never forgot what community meant growing up with a single parent. He understands it takes neighbors, friends and the whole community’s support to raise a family. In August of 2006, Wes, wife Kriste and daughters Kylee and India opened Coffee Cabin, a drive-up coffee shop at the northeast corner of Stroh Road and Parker Road. Remembering that need for support, they turned their energies to not only owning a coffee shop, but also giving back to the community. After the second year in business, they decided to donate everything they made one Sunday a month to a local charity. 34

Parker Lifestyle | December 2015

As the economy declined and Kriste closed her business, they were forced to look for other ways to give back. They organized the Coffee Cabin Children’s Hospital Walk, which has raised $40,000 for Children’s Hospital over five years. They also started their annual toy drive. They collect trailers full of toys, which have been distributed over the years to a variety of agencies, schools and individuals so that children in need can have a good Christmas. While the Coffee Cabin is the sponsor of these charitable events, Wes turns the praise and attention to his customers and their support of these charities. You see, while you get your coffee, Wes spends the time talking to you, getting to know you and remembering you. He knows your name the next time you drive up.
