We also take this chance to think of those less fortunate and encourage you to take the opportunity this giving season to donate to local organizations or charities that support our community and beyond. We hope that as you read this issue, you—like us—find inspiration in the lives and experiences of your neighbors and the connections that have been made. Happy Thanksgiving, Parker!

WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS WITH FOOD ALLERGIES, YOU HAVE TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL AND CREATIVE IN WHAT YOU PREPARE DURING THE HOLIDAYS. Often, our girls cannot eat much of what has been set out for a celebration, and the holiday spread can seem like a landmine field. One bite of pumpkin pie served with the spatula from the pecan pie could mean a holiday trip to the emergency room. During this time of the year, there is butter, cream, nuts and flour everywhere

+ Tips for Preparing Allergy-Friendly Holiday Feasts + Carefully read ingredients to ensure a prepackaged food does not have hidden allergens, such as nuts or dairy. + Avoid setting out snacking nuts, a popular holiday nibble. Instead, offer salami, cheeses, olives and dips. Your guest can find options that work for them. Use separate serving utensils for each item to avoid cross-contamination. + Roasted veggies are an allergy-friendly side dish all year round. This method works with squash, sweet potatoes, peppers, mushrooms, etc. Cut vegetables, add olive oil, season liberally and put into a hot oven until cooked through and browned. Once you learn this method, the possibilities are endless. November 2018 | Parker Lifestyle

Kids Mobility Network co-founders Christy Kopp, left, and Peter Kopp, with their daughter, Kayla
Christy Kopp founded Kids Mobility Network in 2005 with her husband, Peter, to help children with disabilities have access to durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and walkers. Christy says she and her husband were inspired to help provide necessary equipment to uninsured and underinsured families. WHAT IS THE “WHY” BEHIND WHAT YOU DO? We started Kids Mobility Network because we wanted children with disabilities to be able to access their community safely and independently. YOUR PERFECT DAY INCLUDES... Spending time both with our recipient families helping them get the right durable medical equipment and then spending time with my own friends and family. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Seeing people overcome their challenges and maintaining a positive attitude while doing so. HOW DO YOU INSPIRE OTHERS? I try to model inclusion and positive imaging around disability. At Kids Mobility Network, we promote community access and helping our clients maintain an active lifestyle. “GRATITUDE” MEANS... To me, gratitude means being able to give back. Kids Mobility has now helped thousands of families in Colorado and beyond. I am grateful that with community support we are able to continue to do so. KidsMobility.org 22

Andrew Clough, right, is pictured at the Insurance Mediators office in Centennial with business partner Steve Gerber
YOUR PERFECT DAY INCLUDES... My perfect day includes landing multiple projects and being excited to write checks to one of our supported nonprofits. The blessing about giving from the top of our operation is that the culture and mindset of who we are is generosity first. We are a firm believer that as the Bible says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Meaning that your heart is attached to your money. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? The things that inspire me are my relationship with God first and foremost. The strength, dedication, commitment and love of my amazing wife, Shannon. The love and passion of my five children. My mentor and ministry partner, Steve Tull. And my business partner, Steve Gerber, who shares every aspect of the vision with me.
ANDREW CLOUGH I N S U R A N C E M E D I ATO R S
HOW DO YOU INSPIRE OTHERS? I inspire others by living a life that suggests “follow me as I follow Christ.” Although I am not perfect, people respect vulnerability and truth in a leader. Genuine and servant-style leadership is attractive as it starts and ends with love and humility. And as far as I know, wars have never been started over love and humility.

Tyler Pilger of Elevation Cycles
Tyler Pilger of Elevation Cycles says he feels strongly that bicycles aren’t just a two-wheeled machine but a vehicle to joy, physical fitness and independence. Tyler, along with co-owner Phillip Brown, works with Project ReCycle a Douglas County nonprofit organization that works to provide children with bicycles. WHAT IS THE “WHY” BEHIND WHAT YOU DO? In one way or another, bicycles have changed the lives of all the folks on our team. We have the luxury of sharing our passion with our customers every day. While we offer bikes from the high end to entry level, some people are just not in a place to buy a new bike. We want to be a community resource to partner with our customers to help share the joy and independence that bikes can bring to those who may need it most. We are a conduit for this by working with Project ReCycle (ProjectReCycle.org) to help our customers donate bikes throughout the year which are used for their Dream Bike Program to encourage kids to earn a bike through improving their school attendance and academic growth. During the holidays, we offer a discount to customers who donate old bikes and give gift cards to customers who purchase new kid’s bikes for donation. Our customers are amazing and donated more than 50 new kid’s bikes this last year. YOUR PERFECT DAY INCLUDES... Any day on the bike in the mountains with family or friends is tough to beat. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? The bravery of taking the first step to push your comfort zone, whether it is an attempt at the Colorado Trail race or a first ride without training wheels. HOW DO YOU INSPIRE OTHERS? Listening to their goals and offering experiences

SERVICE FIRST "My path to photography was really different than most," says Army veteran Brian Johnson of Brian Johnson Photo. "When I went to war, I took a couple of blasts from IEDs. I don't have much memory prior to 2005. I have images but not much recollection. Photos allow me to say, 'Yes, I was there.' I live vicariously through those images." "I have seen the worst of the worst through my life and career choices, and that helped me focus on giving back," Brian says of his several deployments with the Army and as a deputy sheriff. When Brian was in law enforcement, he started volunteering and taking photos for Special Olympics Colorado. "It tugged at my heartstrings. It inspired me to see the special needs community triumph over barriers other people don't have," he says. "They don't communicate the same way we do, so it is important to find a way to communicate on their level through the right tone of voice, word choices, etc. We donate all photography to Special Olympics valued at more than $100,000 to date."

GIVING LIGHT TO LIFE THROUGH THE LENS Parker resident Johnnie Medina dabbled in photography on and off for about 15 years, but on July 27, 2017, his family was changed forever. That was the day his 24-year-old daughter, Mikayla, took her own life. Johnnie’s idea of Life Through the Lens was born during the next few weeks. Getting behind the camera and capturing precious moments of terminally ill patients was a gift he could give to families. “I realized I didn’t have enough photos that showed who Mikayla was in life,” Johnnie explains. “It was my form of grieving, and it helped me through this.” Life Through the Lens provides photos for free. Taking final portraits of terminally ill patients evolved into taking photos for the Colorado Cancer Coalition, Global Down Syndrome and Kids Mobility Network, as well as other nonprofits. Johnnie tries to attend every funeral, and some Photo by Johnnie Medina

tos in a few weeks or in a few months, but they need the photos to process what they are going through.” Johnnie has received messages from people as far away as the U.K. “People are rallying around this,” he says. Local companies have jumped on the bandwagon, too. “We are proud and honored to contribute in a small way to what Johnnie is doing and to help these families in their time of need,” says Karen Shain, owner of Mainstreet Flower Market in Parker. Her shop donates a plant or an arrangement for every funeral, and
Englewood Camera donates two prints from the edited files Johnnie gives to the families. Life Through the Lens creates a legacy of memories and keeps the person’s light alive. “I want people to see who they were and what defined them.” Irish singer Tommy Fleming is an ambassador and advocate. Finding more sponsors, celebrity ambassadors and photographers will help Life Through the Lens grow worldwide, Johnnie says. Johnnie also speaks to high school students. “Depression is a real issue, and getting the conversation started with kids is a big thing.” johnnie@throughthelens.org November 2018 | Parker Lifestyle
