Lifestyle Letter

Hello, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody! T

he perks of this job are numerous. Last month, I travelled to Jacksonville, FL with a pack of regional and national journalists and we surfed, golfed, paddled, kayaked, made candy, toured a century-old underground bank vault, and sipped and savored the flavors of a city building itself up around a fine riverfront and nearby welcoming coastline. The enthusiasm and energy of the Visit Jacksonville team was contagious and by the end of the trip, I vowed to return (and to write about why YOU should visit...stay tuned for a story later this summer).

Editors are constantly bombarded with product samples, invitations to openings and receptions and story pitches. I meet some intruiging characters and learn, first-hand, why people are passionate about their job, their family, their philanthropy. I find myself in high rise offices with leaders of industry and in kitchens with families celebrating milestones. Everyone has a story. I love my job. I enjoyed getting to know Chef Jeff Trump and his family in our writer Lia Picard's story when she visited Brooklyn Cafe in Sandy Springs. Chefs are among the hardest working professionals around, and I love the way Chef has included his sons in the business. Cheers to the entire Trump family and Happy Father's Day to Jeff. I lost my dad 16 years ago to lung cancer (which is one reason I was thrilled Lifestyle Publications sponsored the American Cancer Society's recent Hope Ball). And, this month, our three kids will honor their dad, my husband of 28 years.

O

ff the beaten path in Sandy Springs, sits Brooklyn Café – a restaurant serving up “contemporary neighborhood cuisine.” Owned by Jeff Trump and Mike Horosh, with Trump frequently in the kitchen, the charming restaurant has something frequently overlooked by many: the chef is also a dad. Being a dad is a full time job, but for chef ’s it’s a particularly unique station. With long and grueling workdays spent in a hot kitchen there can be an additional strain put on chefs with families at home. But Trump is lucky because his dad-life overlaps with his chef-life. His three sons, Jack, Sam and Michael, are each involved with the restaurant. So, while he still has the long work days that come with being a chef and co-owning a restaurant, he also has the benefit of working alongside his sons and can watch them grow up in more ways than one. Spending time with his sons is very important to Trump, but it wasn’t always possible. Before opening Brooklyn Café, he worked for a major restaurant group forcing him to be a road warrior often away from his family. “I’ve certainly missed my share of ball games,” he says, reflecting on the way things used to be. Now that the restaurant has found its groove he says, “We finally closed on Sundays so we could regroup with our families.” It’s always been important to Trump that his kids work at the restaurant for a bit. Not only does this give him a chance to spend time with them, but he feels the life lessons they learn working in the restaurant industry are “invaluable.” Jack, 21, waited on tables all throughout high school and still helps out on extended breaks when he’s home from college. The middle child, Sam, is 18 and helps out wherever he’s needed. The youngest boy, Michael is only 9 and has a ways to go before he can work with dad. “Michael thinks he’s the manager, the truth is he’s in charge of the coloring books,” Trump says with a chuckle. The oldest of the trio, Jack, shared his perspective of practically growing up in a restaurant. What started out as a way to see his dad after his CONTINUED > parents split up turned into a career track.

BROOKLYN CAFE (CON TI N U ED)

Jack reminisced that like all teenagers, he loved making some cash but, “ultimately, I grew closer to my dad.” He still has a year left at the University of Arizona, but would love to work with his dad “in some capacity” when he’s finished. He explained that this could mean consulting, or expanding his dad’s current business. As much as he loves working with his sons, Trump does make sure to have some fun with them outside of the restaurant, too. “We love to cook, we like to go experience new foods and travel together.” Their favorite things to cook? “Sandwiches, we love sandwiches.” Being a chef and father isn’t easy thanks to long days with odd hours. For Trump, though, it’s eased by the fact that he gets to work with his sons and not only be a dad to them, but mold them into young men. Striking a balance between his demanding job and the needs of sons allow him to be a successful chef dad.

Cheers to Treehorn Cider ARTICLE LIA PICARD | PHOTOGRAPHY TOMAS ESPINOZA

A

n apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what about a glass of hard apple cider? Well, once you’ve had a glass of Treehorn’s craft cider you may think so. The first craft cidery to hit Atlanta, Treehorn launched in September 2015. Kind of like a real life “Friends,” Treehorn was formed by seven people: four men who have all known each other since high school and their partners. One of the founding men, Justin Pierce, went to Dunwoody High School, with the others also from the area. The idea for a cidery came to Davina Maraccini, one of the founders, while she was visiting Asheville for work and became smitten with their local craft cider. She realized that local craft cider wasn’t available here in Atlanta, so she convinced her friends to jump on board and Treehorn was born. So why drink hard apple cider? Upon your first sip you’ll notice how crisp and refreshing it is. Atlanta is a beer city, but craft cider makes for a refreshing palette cleanser. There’s also a world of difference between local, craft cider and the larger corporate brands. Treehorn uses a lot less sugar than the big brands making it slightly better for you. They also use white wine yeast in their cider. This adds some esters from the wine while preserving the apples’ flavor. Speaking of the apples, they play a huge role in making Treehorn’s cider so drinkable. “Most big companies use apples from concentrate, without character. In order to give it flavor they add a lot of sugar,” says ciderist Andrew Wheeler. Treehorn, on the other hand, has a partnership with Mercier Orchards, located in North Georgia. They gather the apples for them and press a blend of juice just for Treehorn. Since the apples vary by season, no batch is alike! Being the first craft cidery in a beer town is not without its challenges. While they’ve found success 28

among the gluten free crowd, the biggest hurdle they face with everyone else is just trying the product. People often associate cider with cloying sweetness, giving it a stigma as a “girly” drink. “You have to convince people to try it and sell it and once you do, it flies out the door,” says Wheeler. Similarly to its fermented cousins, beer and wine, hard apple cider is versatile beyond just drinking it in a glass. Wheeler recommends poaching salmon in their dry cider, or pairing it with goat cheese and pork. It also makes a great base for a cocktail – perfect for patio season. Besides being the perfect summertime beverage, Treehorn also has a culture of sustainability and understands the importance of minimizing its impact on the environment. Unlike breweries, a lot less waste is created by the production of cider. Growing apples is more sustainable than growing the barley, hops and grains needed for beer. After the apples are pressed, the remaining parts can be recycled as compost or animal feed. Ciderist Mallory Law, also explains, “No water goes in our product, so we use a lot less resources than a brewery.” So where can you find them? You can’t visit Treehorn’s tasting room (yet), and it’s only available for purchase in kegs. You can find their dry and ginger flavored cider at several restaurants throughout the metro area, including Sandy Springs’s own Battle and Brew. While they did receive a permit for a tasting room in Marietta, the next big thing for Treehorn is getting their product into cans. Once the cider is in cans people can buy it at shops and enjoy it in their own homes. Summer is in full swing, so there isn’t a better time than now to try Atlanta’s hottest beverage, Treehorn Cider.

esteemed 50-plus-year history with power, value and magnetism. After a well-received facelift to the Mustang’s exterior in 2015, the more menacing, sleek, yet muscular curves completely complement its 5.0L, V-8 heart powered by 435 horses and 400 pound-feet of torque. Our review model went nostalgic and flaunted the four-seat California Special option that debuted in 1968; this new model includes eye-popping extras such as 19-inch black-painted aluminum wheels; a more prominent black rear spoiler; a large splitter in the front; a custom grille and gas cap; black side mirrors; temperature-controlled ebony leather and Miko suede seats laced with red stitching; and the essential racing stripes to name a few embellishments. Mustang’s 2016 class also pays homage to yesteryear with secondary turning signals embedded in the hood vents for extra flair. Another standout modification is the SYNC3

touchscreen interface that is significantly easier to operate compared to the former, brain-stressing MyFord Touch infotainment system. The practical knobs, scrolls, buttons, and flip switches are applauded, simplifying the activation of four drive modes, dual-zone climate control, and premium, 12-speaker SHAKER sound system. The collapsing of the convertible top is also driver friendly—a simple manual twist of the handle, followed by the push of a button lowers it in approximately a responsive seven seconds. Mustang fanatics will also love the heated exterior mirrors’ beam of the signature running horse illuminating the ground during the unlocking activation. Ultimately, the 2016 Mustang is a high-tech, responsive handling, well-crafted machine that grips the road, while dishing out the power muscle car enthusiasts demand. The perfect balance
