Hello Sandy Springs and Dunwoody C

oaches are my heroes. They love their sport, their competitors and communities. In this month's super sporty issue, you'll meet three Dunwoody and Sandy Springs residents who make coaching a priority. Brian Krehmeyer is the head basketball coach at the Wesleyan School. Claudiu Vidulescu is Head Coach with the U.S. Cliimbing Team and Liz Kennedy coaches the varsity girls basketball team at The Lovett School. They all bring an unparalleled energy to their sports and we salute them this month. It’s a month of doing and giving in the Lifestyle Publications world. We had fun planning a contest for you to win a day of pampering with hair and make-up at Van Michael Salon, dinner at Davio’s Italian Steakhouse and massages and a luxury stay at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, with transportation for the winner plus one pal compliments of Posh Limousine. Head to our website to enter and splash out the contest on your social media for me! We'll be eating out a lot this month, supporting Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities (ARMHC) during Brookhaven Dines Out, a series of benefit nights at neighboring eateries and restaurants in the readership of our sister mag, BuckHaven Lifestyle. A percentage of all sales on scheduled days will benefit the families served at Atlanta's two Ronald McDonald Houses. Participating Buckhead and Brookhaven restaurants include: Genki, Lucky's Burger and Brew, Nancy G's, Newk's Brookhaven, Moe's, Taziki's, The Southern Gentleman, Zoe's and many more. For a full calendar listing of dates and participating restaurants, please visit ARMHC.org. Have a sporty month and enjoy our September issue. Sue SCollins@LifestylePubs.com

Please join us in the mission of raising funds for pediatric cancer research, promoting awareness and family support to benefit our 2016 charity partner, CURE Childhood Cancer. Polo in the Pines invites “Big Thinkers”, entrepreneurs, researchers, educators, medical advisors and supporters to connect for the cause as we plant the seeds for productive collaboration with global participation. We welcome our community to invest and invite friends as we build this signature event together. Polo in the Pines is a grass roots event created in 2012 by founder Tina Fowler to honor her mother Sharon Knight, now a 27 year survivor of leiomyosarcoma cancer. The heart of Polo in the Pines is about sharing our personal journeys to help others. Sharon Knight said “Life is about choices, and I choose to turn this negative into something positive. It has been an opportunity for growth. Growth is not always about getting what we want, but it is about being conformed to the image of Christ in which we become the men and women we have the potential to be.”

very spring for the last 14 years, the Van Michael Salon leadership team does their part to create international goodwill by sharing tricks of the trade and latest trends with stylists who come all the way from Japan to learn from these experts. Upstairs at the Aveda Institute on Peachtree earlier this summer, 40 students watched Van Michael Salon’s Director of Color Natalie Gurley demonstrate the newest color techniques (a splash of magenta, an exclamation point on a head of smooth dark hair). The students--all Van Michael partners/salon owners and their top stylists from Japan were noticeably alert, making notes, recording every word on tablets and smart phones, taking photos and straining to hear the interpreter. “You’ll never find more attentive and polite students. They want to soak up as much as they can about our tools and techniques and especially American trends,” says Van Council, one of two brothers whose names grace Van Michael salons in Atlanta, Miami and Japan. Van welcomed the guests, introducing his Atlanta directors, who served as teachers for the two-day workshop. Brother Michael Council was at the salon in Sandy Springs, where he cuts and styles some of Atlanta’s most beautiful people. Van Michael Salon has welcomed Japanese partners annually, including more than 80 one year. “They learn about how we operate the business and take some of our best practices back to Japan where we have 38 salons,” Van says. The guests spent half the first day learning the Van Michael Performance Wheel, a list of services and practices stylists use on every client at Van Michael. It’s the basic outline of the experience from beginning to end. “We then discussed each point and why they are important to the client experience,” explains Van. After that, Natalie Gurley and Jeffrey Goldenstein, Van Michael Director of Cut Education, demonstrated a few color and cutting techniques, and Johnny Plant demonstrated the Evolve volumizer hair piece. “At the end of the day, the group dines together and shops. And shops and shops,” says Jay Pollard, Director of Operations. He and and Van’s assistant and Director of Recruiting, Jamie Shetler, organize the event and keep the students corralled and entertained. “We have a blast--once the work and studying is done, of course,” says Shetler.

COACH: BRIAN KREHMEYER SPORT: Baseball – Head basketball coach, Wesleyan School

Brian Krehmeyer is one of Dunwoody’s most beloved coaches. Brian grew up here and lives in Dunwoody with his wife Susannah and ten year old twin boys. His eyes well up when speaking of coming full circle - having attended Dunwoody High School with a dream of someday being a coach, and realizing that dream today. Marching in the local July Fourth parade, seeing neighbors, family and the kids he had coached, he realizes, “I’m not just a teacher, I’m part of the community.” Krehmeyer’s professional and personal passion spills over into every team he coaches. Starting off at Westminster after graduating college, as assisting coach with the football and baseball teams (alongside a previous DHS coach) suited him well, especially since he met his wife - a fellow teacher there. In 2005 he received a call about a new school that was taking shape. He was asked to take a leap of faith and join the staff at Wesleyan. Krehmeyer was the perfect fit for a school that

Brian and Susannah and their two active boys, Hardy and Kerns.

values academic, spiritual, and all around excellence. He simultaneously held the position of S.A. coordinator and Defensive Coordinator for football and varsity baseball. After helping the football team reach the state finals in 2006– 07, and win the state championship in 2008-10, in 2011 he realized something had to give. “Coaching every day after school and almost every weekend was taking away time from my wife and two young sons. I knew I had to make some changes.” So when Krehmeyer got the nod in 2012 to be the head baseball coach – it was an easy choice. Now making decisions instead of suggestions, he helped the boys take home the state championship in 2014. When asked about his many runs and wins at state championships for both baseball and football, he notes, “Although trophies are great, it’s not what the teams or the coaches will remember – it’s the players on that team.” Brian Krehmeyer won’t just be remembered as “Coach”, but as the extraordinary neighbor and family man who shared his gifts both on and off the field. COACHES RULE (CON TI N U ED)

COACH: CLAUDIU VIDULESCU

SPORT: Rock Climbing - Head Coach U.S. Olympic Team

Rock climbing is gaining popularity here in the U.S. and around the world, and one of the sport’s powerhouses lives right here in Sandy Springs. Born in Romania, Claudiu Vidulescu found his way to the U.S. in 2001 and eventually to our community where he enjoys a host of incredible natural rock climbing opportunities all within a few hours drive. Since 2004 he has held the prestigious title, Head Coach of the Youth U.S. Team. However even more illustrious is the title of the 2020 Olympic team coach, should the sport gain approval as a new Olympic sport (which it most likely will)! Currently 55 countries compete for the world title. “We are all naturally born climbers, it is in our genes,” he says. He manages the youth programs locally at Stone Summit climbing gyms. The pillars of scoring rest on bouldering, sport, and speed – and Atlanta climbers are mastering all three with Vidulescu’s knowledge and coaching. Veronica Muehring is the Dunwoody mother of two children who made the National Team and are headed to China in November for the Youth World Championship. “Coach Vidulescu helped my kids to believe in themselves, giving them confidence and encouragement to rise up to challenges and to dream big.” Fingers crossed… Sandy Spring’s own Vidulescu helps lead both our Youth National Team this year and our country in 2020 to Olympic gold! COACH: LIZ KENNEDY

SPORT: Basketball – Varsity Girls Head Coach, The Lovett School

Liz and Miki

Liz Kennedy, Lovett’s head girl’s basketball coach has a contagious smile. It’s hard to talk with her and not be cheered. For 11 years, she has taken the Lovett girls team places they never thought they could go. Two of her students are competing on the U.S.A. national team in Spain this year, one previous student and one a current rising junior, Jenna Brown. When you meet Kennedy she is all business, but her spirit and warmth shine when she talks about her loves: family, basketball, Lovett, and especially her basketball family. She grew up in upstate New York, attended college in Pennsylvania and was hired as an assistant coach at the college level after graduating. When Lovett reached out to her 11 years ago, she was ecstatic to move to Atlanta. Little did she know, a few short years later she would meet her life partner Miki who is also softball coach. They balance coaching and family, raising two young children with ease. Having brought home Lovett’s first ever Basketball State Championship in 2012, Kennedy is proud that it was the girls that won the impressive title. “The kids put in the work, the coaches put in the work, we all put in the work,” she says, crediting the players first. ACT,

NEW CHANGES IN BOTH TESTS CREATE NEW QUESTIONS (AND ANSWERS) ABOUT WHICH ONE TO TAKE

ARTICLE TERESA SHELL, BESPOKE TUTORING | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A

s high school students settle into their new school year, many are beginning to take a more serious look at their future. Career choices, as well as the college majors that may lead to those careers, are typically top of mind. Meetings with college counselors, private educational consultants, and most likely, mom and dad, have been added to their ever-growing to-do list. But, before tailored studies at a university may begin, most students must overcome a major hurdle: the standardized test scores of the SAT or the ACT. While some colleges no longer require an SAT or ACT score to be submitted during the application process, the majority of colleges and universities in the United States do, or, at the very least, list them on the application as optional. This hurdle leads students to the question: which test is their better test? For many years the SAT and ACT were preferred by students based on their geographical area and the schools to which they were applying. Now that most colleges accept either, the choice is left to the individual preference of the student. But how to decide? The SAT, revamped significantly over the past year, has long held the reputation of being a great option for students with strengths in reading and writing. The ACT was often considered the best test for those students more inclined to math and science. Now, these reputations are not necessarily valid. The newly designed SAT, debuting this past March, includes cross-test scores in History/Social Studies and Science. The exam focuses on four individual tests: one in Evidence-Based Reading, one in Writing and Language, and two in Math (only one permitting the use of a calculator), with science and history pieces incorporated throughout the exam. On the redesigned test, a student may be asked to examine the author's intent in a Nelson Mandela speech or decide whether a chart accurately reflects the results of a scientific experiment. The math test 24

questions are designed to be similar to those a student may face in a future career such as maximizing profit or calculating sales tax. These more wellrounded test questions are designed to give a better indicator of a student's college readiness, but may also appeal to those math and science students who historically tended to prefer the ACT. With fewer recent changes, the ACT continues to use their four-test approach, which includes one Reading test, one English test, one Math test, and one Science test. Like the SAT, outside knowledge of literature or specific science pieces is not required, but can be helpful. The ACT continues to emphasize grammar skills in its English test, critical reading skills in the Reading test, and math problems more in line with those on a high school math test. The ACT's major change came last fall with the redesign of the Essay test. Previously an opinion or persuasive argument piece, the new ACT essay requires a student to read a prompt, analyze three perspectives, and discuss their own perspective in relation to the given perspectives. This essay style is often seen in more advanced high school literature classes and should appeal to those students adept at analyzing arguments. It will also provide colleges with a more direct representation of a student's understanding of standard written language conventions and his own writing ability. Like the SAT, this test change makes the ACT a more attractive option for students typically inclined to stay away. Understanding the test differences between the SAT and ACT is imperative in deciding which test is best for your student. Only taking a mock version of each exam can give full insight into a student’s strengths and weaknesses. Mock exams, or practice tests, can be done online, on your own, or with a tutoring company. Choosing the right test sets the tone for a student's college application process and builds confidence during this important time. BespokeTutoring.com

eptember is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and the Sandy Springs-based Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance is honoring local families with a celebratory 5K fun run at Piedmont Park. The community is invited to join this year’s Teal Trot on September 10, which will honor ovarian cancer patients and survivors and raise funds for GOCA’s statewide education and awareness efforts. Presented by Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, Teal Trot is one of the largest ovarian cancer awareness events in the country. Dunwoody survivor Betsy Gentry plans to run with a team of friends and family.

“Last year, I was going through chemo treatments when the Teal Trot was held and didn’t have the energy to participate, but some very kind friends ran it in my honor,” Gentry says. “I promised them that I would take part in 2016 as a healthy ovarian cancer survivor. As it turns out, the race is being held on my 33rd wedding anniversary, so my husband and I will celebrate with a very meaningful victory lap! Ovarian cancer can be so silent until late stages, and it’s important to me that women who are diagnosed get information and support as they navigate through treatment.” Nicole Carter of Brookhaven will also be supporting Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance efforts this month. Her 9-year-old

daughter, Mary Tipton, was diagnosed in February 2015 at only 8 years old and recently celebrated one year cancer-free. “Until the day our daughter was diagnosed, we honestly had no idea that children could be afflicted with ovarian cancer,” Carter says. “The symptoms are so similar to many other illnesses, and the ER doctor actually suspected appendicitis until an ultrasound revealed otherwise. We want the public to realize that ovarian cancer can strike ladies of all ages.” The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2016 more than 22,000 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed and more than 14,000 women will die in the U.S. from this disease. Symptoms of ovarian cancer include frequent urination, eating and feeling full quickly, abdominal pain or bloating, and loss of appetite. Early detection of ovarian cancer saves lives. Studies have found that women who are diagnosed in early stages have an 80 percent 5-year survival rate. However, ovarian cancer does not have a screening test for the general population of women. “Because of the lack of screening tests and clear cut symptoms, the key to fighting ovarian cancer is education and awareness,” says Doug Barron, executive director of GOCA. “With events like Teal Trot and the help of supporters like Betsy and Nicole, we’re able to reach the community in a meaningful way and help educate people about this elusive disease.” Runners and walkers can register for Teal Trot at GaOvarianCancer.org. Ovarian cancer survivors and patients walk for free. Otherwise, the fee is $35 to attend.

his year’s Dunwoody Home Tour will feature four outstanding homes representing a variety of architectural styles and vintages ranging from historic to new construction. • The Mills B. Lane, Jr. historic summer home was built in 1938. It was a wedding gift from Mills B. Lane, Sr. to his son, a prominent Atlanta businessman. The wood frame, ranch style home has grown to more than 3,000 square feet after several additions over the years. The house is now home to a discerning collector of paintings, sculpture, antiques and automobiles -- both full-sized and miniature -- who calls the home his art gallery.

Parting Thoughts

RIDE A BIKE IN

A NEW WAY

I

magine riding a bike with no brakes and no gears on a track with a 36 degree banking. Sound thrilling? That's track cycling--a form of

cycling based on speed, tactics and strength, and you can learn to do it here in Atlanta at the Dick Lane Velodrome. The Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point is one of only 22 active velodromes in the country but ironically this is not the track that was used in the ‘96 Olympics. Cyclists have been racing at this velodrome since a group of East Point residents were inspired by a visit to the Munich Olympics in 1972 and built the track shortly after. While it does take a certain amount of bike experience to cycle on the track, the velodrome offers beginner classes for both adults and kids that provide you with the fundamentals of riding the track, safe riding techniques and toward the end of the clinic, advanced bike handling. The velodrome even provides you with the special track bike- one without brakes and gears. If you're scared to not be able to grip the brakes, take it from track manager Rob Evans. “I consider track cycling one of the safest forms of cycling, taking place on a car-free track," said Evans. "While the lack of brakes might seem daunting at first, it's usually brakes on road bicycles that cause most of the crashes. You'll use your own leg strength to slow yourself down just like you speed up." The last two beginners classes of the season are two-day weekend courses on September 17-18 and October 7 and 8. Courses are $60 and include a loaner bike. Once you complete the beginner’s class, you are ready to start riding and training or even racing on the track. The Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point holds races weekly from March through October, giving you plenty of time to master the track before the 2017 season. Send us photos of your adventure!
