Can I be honest with you? I HATE PAPER TOWELS. I buy two rolls each year, just before Thanksgiving. With more meals being prepared by more hands in the kitchen, I bow down to the handiness of these earth crushing rectangles of convenient absorbency. The two rolls last until February or so. Then, it’s back to using dish clothes, towels and sponges to wipe down and clean up. I find paper bags work fine to absorb bacon grease and there’s nothing better than newspaper for washing windows. So, when my sweet sister-in-law visited from New Jersey a few months ago, she busied herself in the kitchen making tea and asked where my paper towel was. My

husband glanced up, smiling, knowing what was about to go down. “We don’t use paper towel,” I said matter of factly. “WHAT? What do you mean? You’re out?” She didn’t believe me and continued to open cupboard doors, looking under the sink and moving the toaster and coffee maker as if I’d hid a bulking roll of Bounty in a fun kitchen game. I explained that it’s just something we do.I could see the distaste and confusion wash across her face. “How do you keep your kitchen clean? You can’t just use sponges and towels. Come on, Sue!” My husband put the newspaper down to watch. Standing in my bright, germ-free, scrubbed down kitchen, I calmly explained that not using paper towel is something small and easy we can do to cut down our already sprawling carbon footprint. All this was received with doubt and disbelief as she shook her head, eyes darting around the room in search of an omniscient roll.

The next time you ask for a plastic straw, grab plastic bags at the grocery store or buy a bottle of water on your way to the gym (we’re all guilty of something!), you should also know that roughly half of the annual plastic production’s lifespan ends after just a single use. And most single-use plastics aren’t even making it to landfills, let alone being recycled. Instead, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is being dumped into the world’s oceans every minute. Curb your single-use plastic consumption with these reusable counterparts.

BIKE-WALK DUNWOODY PAVES THE WAY FOR SOCIAL CONNECTION AND EXERCISE

Perimeter North Lifestyle | April 2019
AT 3 P.M. ON THE FIRST SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH, FROM MARCH THROUGH NOVEMBER, YOU CAN FIND DUNWOODY RESIDENT JASON METZGER CRUISING THE 4.5 MILE LOOP THAT STARTS AND ENDS AT VILLAGE BURGER ON DUNWOODY VILLAGE PARKWAY. Jason volunteers for Bike-Walk Dunwoody, a group that hosts a monthly bicycle ride for enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. “Our riders range from the beginner just learning to navigate the roads, to the seasoned cyclist looking for a relaxing Sunday ride with friends,” he explains. “The beautiful loop through town is the ideal distance for most, although we do offer a shorter option as well.” For the Bike-Walk Dunwoody volunteers it’s fun to see many familiar faces week after week. “We like to think it’s the joy of being on a bike that brings everyone back each week,” says Jason. “But, it may also be the $1 frozen custard and the discounted beers that Village Burger has waiting for us at the finish line.” For many cyclers the end of a bike ride leads not just to a tasty treat but also a healthier, safer, more family-friendly community. In fact, community and connection are two of the guiding principles of Bike-Walk Dunwoody. The road becomes a place to catch-up with a neighbor or wave at people you meet along the ride – not just a way to get where you’re going. You can often find groups walking to the local Mexican restaurant, Los Rancheros, or bikers filling their baskets with produce from the farmers market. These moments together not only strengthen community bonds but also gives families a chance to connect. For Paige Metzger ,the benefits of cycling are felt by every member of her family. She likes to join in the Bike-Walk Dunwoody rides with her husband and son who look forward to the opportunity to get outside and hit the open road. “This is a great way to meet new people, spend time with family and friends and see your community from a different perspective,” she says. In addition to the feeling the wind in your hair the volunteer group offers the opportunity for an equally important experience: riding safely. Atlanta is known for having tricky roads for bicyclists, scooters and pedestrians, so learning how to be visible to vehicles and understanding the rules of safe cycling is critical. One of the most important safety rules to keep in mind, especially for younger riders, is to choose either the sidewalk or the bike lane and then stay there. Cutting back and forth between the two is an easy way to get hurt or cause an accident. “The Bike-Walk Dunwoody volunteers have a lot of experience and have done a great job giving tips and answering general questions about cycling” says Paige. “Come out and enjoy the Dunwoody downhills with us – it’s a ton of fun!”

GROWING GROCERY STORE FOOD CAPTAIN PLANET FOUNDATION'S PROJECT LEARNING GARDEN
ARTICLE LEESA CARTER, CEO, CAPTAIN PLANET FOUNDATION PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Perimeter North Lifestyle | April 2019
THE SECOND GRADER WAS NOT IMPRESSED. The previous fall, his elementary school had become a Project Learning Garden school with the Captain Planet Foundation, and all winter he and his classmates had watched the tops of root vegetables grow. Random, bushy, green things that were not interesting in the least. Now it was spring, and his teacher was insisting that they pull on those green things for a “harvest.” So, being a good student, he bent down, grabbed a handful, and pulled. Suddenly, his hand held a carrot. He spun around wide-eyed and exclaimed, “Wait… we can grow GROCERY STORE FOOD?!” He is just one of thousands of students across Atlanta who now garden at school thanks to the Captain Planet Foundation. Back in 2012, the now 27-year-old foundation launched Project Learning Garden in just nine pilot schools in Cobb County. They realized quickly that it was a winner. Teachers were thrilled at how engaged their students became during hands-on learning lessons that took ideas from the classroom and brought them to life in the garden. And parents, who had said that their children viewed salad as “my enemy,” watched in amazement as their kids chowed down on fresh garden vegetables. “Our on-campus gardens encourage teachers to take project-based learning outside, including in subjects like math, science, language arts and social studies,” says Leesa Carter, CEO of the Atlanta-based foundation. “Students have an amazing sense of accomplishment when they plant a seed and watch it grow. It’s a small miracle that happens millions of times a day across the globe, but in urban areas, we’ve lost much of our connection to nature and natural systems. School gardens help bring that back.”

GROWING GROCERY STORE FOOD
(CON TI N UED)
Captain Planet Foundation set a goal to have Project Learning Garden in 500 elementary and middle schools across metro Atlanta by 2020. So far, they are in 275 schools, including four of the six elementary schools in Dunwoody (Austin, Chestnut Charter, Dunwoody and Vanderlyn); and in one of the seven elementary schools in Sandy Springs (Heards Ferry). But they’d like to be in every single school! Any teacher or principal is welcome to contact the Foundation at CaptainPlanetFoundation.org or 404.522.4215 to learn more. In addition to the physical raised bed gardens, schools also receive a mobile cooking cart (with a Vitamix!), a garden exploration kit, lesson supply kits, standards-based lessons across multiple subjects, teacher professional development and support during the summer months when school is out of session. “The summer months are the biggest for growing, but schools are out of session,” explains Project Learning Garden Manager Tasha Gomes. “So we’ve partnered with the Arthur M. Blank Foundation
22
Perimeter North Lifestyle | April 2019
and the Atlanta Community Food Bank to solve that issue while supporting both the schools and their communities. For three months, we pay stipends to young urban gardeners who each manage 10-12 schools during the summer. Over the past four summers, we’ve donated close to 10,000 pounds of fresh garden produce to the Food Bank and its pantries around the city!” Project Learning Garden was built for rapid scaling with a cost of only $3,000 per school. Atlanta-area partners like the James M. Cox Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, Kendeda Fund, UPS, and Vasser Woolley Foundation; along with national companies like Dole Packaged Foods, Publix, Sprouts, Wells Fargo and Whole Foods have been instrumental in helping Project Learning Garden grow so quickly. Local businesses in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs are encouraged to adopt a school so that every child in the community is growing strong!

CUSTOMER-FRIENDLY
EXPERIENCES AVAILABLE FOR SHOPPERS ANYWHERE. Based in Buckhead’s bustling Terminus Atlanta complex, the renowned Chef George Laudun recently engaged 15 prospective and returning patrons with another one of his mouth-watering, multiple-course cooking demonstrations using solely the company’s state-of-the-art appliances sold on site. Sizzling sea scallops sautéed to perfection and flame licked prime-cut beef filets are just a few of Chef George’s dishes for his audience to not only sample but also replicate at home. He shares his recipes and an appreciation for the appliances that made this meal possible. Everything he is utilizing—from the refrigerators, to the infrared griddle, induction cooktop, convection steam oven and infrared charbroiler—is collectively Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove products. Whether attendees are seated directly in front of Chef George or at high tops, all participants have a perfect view thanks to a rotating camera capturing every chop, pour, and plating screened on numerous HD monitors. Everyone indulged in the late-morning session’s menu featuring proteins, plus a cheese and charcuterie platter, a fresh seasonal green salad, garlic potatoes seasoned with bacon, citrus asparagus, Georgia grass-raised beef tenderloins and a caramel sauce to drizzle over the airy profiteroles all made from scratch. Once Laudun’s engaging demonstration concluded, members of the audience dabbed the corners of their mouths, and immediately asked showroom representatives to lead them to appliances that would upgrade their existing and future kitchens. Talking with a returning customer who was inquiring about one of the newest additions to the floor—a Cove dishwasher built on SubZero and Wolf’s technology—the Georgia Division’s Vice President of Sales Don DeLong provided more insight.

“We have done chef demonstrations to some extent since 1997 in Orlando, Florida,” says DeLong. “Our goal was to give the luxury customer the ability to experience our products and not just take someone’s word. Chef George is our corporate chef and has been with us 14 years. What we love about him is his ability to connect with the customers at a common level, and to make our presentations about the products and their extensive capabilities. Where many chefs make their demo about them and their food, Chef George does an excellent job of showing the customer how easy it is to prepare meals with Wolf. We like to think customers leave our demos with confidence saying, ‘I can do that.’” And after the delectable exhibition, what’s the next step? “No matter how large or small a project, our showroom staff can provide concierge-level service from inspiration to installation,” says DeLong. “We will then match them up with one of our dealers and after installation, they can return and attend one of our use-and-care classes. While we do have websites and a 24/7 customer-care line, we want everyone to know we are a valuable resource before and after the sale. The best part is we get to establish a relationship with our customers. Not a lot of brands can do that days; it’s not cheap to run a showroom, but we feel it is well worth the investment.” One of the attendees of the demonstration, Michael Berthiaume, explains why the experience is meaningful. “I found out about this demonstration when I was at the showroom outfitting a new home I am building in the Atlanta area. The experience was great due to its size, but was still very intimate. The interaction from Chef George was great, it was nice to be able to ask questions at the end, and he made it look incredibly easy to make some great dishes, so I decided to add the convection oven to my order.” Along with regular cooking demonstrations and instructional classes, there are also opportunities to receive private, hands-on learning opportunities and appliance consultation. And although there are locations worldwide, Chef George and DeLong’s Buckhead showroom is certainly a standout perfectly seasoned with Southern hospitality. For more information on Atlanta’s Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove, visit Subzero-wolf.com/atlanta. It is located at 3280 Peachtree Road
