Happy June, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs!

M

en, men, men. Brothers, fathers, uncles, grandfathers, husbands, boyfriends, friends who are boys. Sons. I love them all. I have four brothers. Three now. We lost one to AIDS in the 90s, when so many families lost men. My brothers teased me, coddled me and ignored me. They pushed me out of their rooms when their friends came over. Then, they pulled me into their laps and wrapped their arms around me at the end of the day. When they went away to college, I would sit on the porch steps waiting for them to pull into the driveway, running to them for a homecoming hug. Photo Scott Areman During this past year, my mother’s Parkinson’s enveloped her and consumed her. My brothers, sister and I became care-givers, her tight team of guardians. We were a board of directors, working together to guide her (and each other) through months of doctor appointments, a maze of medication changes, and storms of emotions that could have easily ripped us apart. Instead, her life’s challenges brought us together. I began to see my brothers as intelligent, thoughtful, thorough and assertive men. They each filled an important role on our care team. One excelled at organizing finances and corresponding with lawyers and banks, reassuring mom that everything was taken care of. He was an absolute champion. One was a guardian angel, pulling mom out of despair and pain with the sound of his voice and confident (but never condescending) bedside visits and late-night phone conversations. One brought sweets and thoughtful photos of family, keeping her grounded with stories of grandchildren, northern Michigan and music. These men were a finely tuned trio that kept our mom humming with quiet efficiency, hard work and ever-present warmth. I now know these men will always be my team. They more than just brothers. They are men of action. And, luckily, still the best huggers on God’s green earth. This month, hug your brother, father, son, partner, champion every day.

LEMONADE FOR KIDS WITH CANCER Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all kids with cancer, invites volunteers across the country to take a stand against childhood cancer when Alex’s Lemonade Days returns, June 12-14. ALSF’s National Lemonade Days began in 2004 when Alex Scott set her sights on raising $1 million to fight childhood cancer, including hers. Alex invited volunteers to join her in hosting lemonade stands to help achieve her goal one dollar and one lemonade stand at a time. Through the help of these volunteers, Alex would reach her goal before losing her life to cancer in August of that year. Each June, the weekend before Father’s Day, supporters everywhere contribute to a cure. The Foundation was built upon the principle that you are never too young to make a difference in the lives of others. For more information and to sign up to host a lemonade stand, visit: AlexsLemonade.org/LemonadeDays.

very year the Drake House provides emergency housing and services for more than 50 women and their children, 41 percent of whom are from Sandy Springs. To help support its work, the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber Women’s Business Network is sponsoring a fashion show June 9 at UPS global headquarters. “With Fashion Goes Global, we hope to raise funds to support that mission and help us stabilize these families. We continue to see the number of folks living in poverty grow,” says Kathy Swahn, executive director of the Drake House. Fashion Goes Global will take place June 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. More than 200 guests will enjoy camaraderie, conversation, wine and signatures appetizers while cheering on a runway show featuring Sandy Springs rescue heroes, community volunteers, corporate leaders and Sandy Springs’ First Lady Jan Paul. “This is such a great cause,” says Samantha Barton, marketing and events coordinator for the Sandy Springs/Perimeter Chamber of Commerce. “Even though the Drake House isn’t located in Sandy Springs, they help a large number of women from Sandy Springs. It’s a way to give back to the community and I know 12

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | June 2015

that, especially having the event at UPS, it will be bigger and better than ever.” Last year, the fashion show raised $5,000; this year, the goal is $7,500. “With events like this we are able to support our programs,” says Swahn. “People think that the poverty is in downtown Atlanta, but the suburbs are really where the poverty is occurring, much more so than downtown.” The Drake House, located at 10500 Clara Drive in Roswell, provides a mother and her family either a one- or two-bedroom furnished apartment. In addition to the housing, the women receive career counseling and participate in an empowerment program. All family members must attend a weekly life skills program that helps them with personal finances, parenting, health and wellness and organizational skills. Tutors assist elementary students with homework and middle and high school students participate in Junior Achievement Classes. The runway outfits will come from The Drake Closet, a supporting boutique whose motto is “Fabulous Finds for the Frugal Fashionista.” For seven years, women wanted to donate clothes to the Drake House. “We always referred them to other thrift stores,” says Swahn. “Then our board realized that we could leverage this support and in Oc-

tober 2011 we opened a store and then two years later, another.” The Drake Store features clothes and jewelry donated so that moms could have clothes for an interview or work. There are also prom dresses and other clothing. The residents of the Drake House get the clothes for free, but the two shops, located in Rowell and Alpharetta, are also open to the general public. “We welcome women who want to volunteer at the Drake Shop, donate clothing or shop in our store,” she says. Both Swahn and Barton were excited about the fashion show’s sponsors and volunteers. For instance, signature appetizers will be donated by 5 Seasons Brewery, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Nancy G’s, Hammock’s, A Divine Event, Luv at First Bit, The Brickery, Taziki’s and Teela Taqueria. Presenting sponsors are Henssler Financial, The Joint, Michael’s Salon and the accounting firm of Babush, Neiman, Kornman & Johnson. Massage Envy Spa created a matching contribution based on sales. “We have so many supporters and it’s awesome,” says Swahn. “We need help in stabilizing these women and their families.” Tickets are $20 for chamber members and $35 for non-members. Pre-registration is required and may be done online at SSPChamber.org.

barter is smarter than you think...

When the bill came it was paid with a bowl of Cajun Gumbo … that’s how barter works. Imagine running your business and paying your bills with trade rather than cash. Thousands of businesses right here in Metro Atlanta are doing just that, including Copeland’s of New Orleans, a local restaurant specializing in New Orleans cuisine in a casual dining atmosphere. “The best reason to use barter is the introduction of many new clients to the business that would not otherwise visit our establishment,” said Bill Goudey, owner of two Atlanta Copeland’s locations. “That, and the cash savings from leveraging the barter network. The Barter Company’s trade coordinators work hard to help us build barter traffic and spend our dollars wisely.”

The Barter Company is a recognized leader in the barter industry with offices in Georgia and Florida. The company provides businesses with an alternative currency network using barter dollars instead of cash to handle transactions. The Barter Company actively manages the network and acts as a third-party records keeper by providing clients with monthly statements. Trade coordinators work with individual member businesses to make the barter experience simple and smooth. For more information, visit www.thebartercompany.com or call 770-591-4343.

Hang It Up A MAN’S GUIDE TO CLOSETS AND CARING FOR CLOTHES ARTICLE RUKSANA HUSSAIN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

ove over fashionistas! Men are taking over this issue and one space where they shouldn’t cut corners is their closet. Men who care about what they wear and how they wear it (no wrinkles, please!), can treat themselves to a closet where there’s a place for everything, and put everything in its place. “One popular request from my male clients is for belt and tie storage,” says Stephanie Parmer who owns Closets By Design of Atlanta with her husband Steve. “We offer many solutions for such storage need’s to include a drawer with a plexi-glass divider which provides great storage and a visual display.” In business since 2000, the company specializes in organization solutions for every space of the home including closets, home office, pantry, garage, craft rooms and entertainment units. “The latest in masculine closet design is a new line called the Brio Collection featuring a high quality “textured” product. It is a sleek modern look that is becoming a must- have in Atlanta.” In her experience, Stephanie points out shoe storage is a necessity in the closet space. “Some gentlemen like simple functional storage and others display their shoes. Another great idea is storage for watches and we have what we call a valet, which is a space for watches, wallet and pens in the top drawer. Our systems are custom designed specifically for their 14

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | June 2015

clothing. He can have sports coats in a longer section, belts in racks that are displayed well, pants on pull out racks and the list is endless.” According to Stephanie, the industry standard material to build closets is an engineered wood product called Melamine. “It is dimensionally stable so when the product is cut and assembled it all fits correctly,” she adds. Closets can be custom designed to the man’s needs and space, after an inventory and discussion with the homeowner. “We do very little cutting on the client site, everything is pre-cut and assembled on location,” says Stephanie. Her client Tony Sostillio had his closet redone recently. “Tony’s new closet has drawers and doors for personal items, single and double hanging sections, and storage for shoes. His taste is more transitional so he asked for flat faced drawer fronts, modern trim package and the textured melamine.” Irrespective of how clothes are stored though, seasonal care is another top consideration for men who like to look good. “After winter, it is important to take care of sweaters, cashmere and wool as they may develop moisture holes,” says Young Lim, owner of Presstine Cleaners in Buckhead. “Use mothballs in your closet especially in in the summer. Ask your cleaners for the blue moisture bags that can be sealed and protect the garment from moisture. Also, suede and leather are difficult materi-

als to work with and must always be sent out to a specialist.” Suits with special features like additional embroidery or trim must be rinsed by hand and given special care. Garments must be turned inside out and have all buttons and other details covered before they are serviced. Originally from South Korea, Lim manages this family business among several others he owns in the city. Though he has lots of competition in the area, he is the oldest dry cleaner around, calling his current location home for the past 15 years, having served Buckhead for more than 50 years. On average, he sees 150-200 customers daily and his staff visits 80 houses for the free pick up and delivery services. When it comes to caring for the city’s finest, he has many pointers to share. “Mustard stains are the hardest to remove so take them straight to the dry cleaners, don’t try removing on your own,” he cautions. “Another problem is the stain ring around the collar, which is from oil produced in the neck area causing discoloration. For every 3-4 times you have that shirt laundered, make sure there is one visit to the dry cleaners,” he adds. Presstine offers free pick up and set delivery, custom hangers, two levels of care for laundered shirts, and monthly billing. They use the latest in barcode technology so you will not see that annoying safety-pinned paper coupon on your clean clothing. Keep it simple, clean and organized and your clothes will last longer.

How Second Opinions and Friendships Saved Dunwoody Woman Alex Hawkins tells the truth

ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ALEX HAWKINS

A

lex Hawkins grew up on the Chattahoochee River in Dunwoody, making memories with her family at the Dunwoody Country Club and worshipping at Dunwoody Baptist Church. In high school, she worked at Dunwoody Animal Medical Center then graduated from Auburn University, choosing to launch her career in Buckhead, setting up an apartment and network of friends. Last October, she reached out to her doctor when she found annoyingly swollen lymph nodes wouldn’t go away. At 23 years old, Alex was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkins lymphoma. This active runner and member of the Atlanta community was shocked to learn of her diagnosis – especially when doctors told her she would have a 95 percent of dying if she did not seek treatment within a year. After undergoing chemotherapy, losing her hair and drained of exhaustion, Alex recently learned that she beat cancer and hopes to educate others – especially young people – about lymphoma. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society honored Alex at the Big Peach 5K Run/Walk in April. Perimeter North Lifestyle asked Alex to share her story.

AH At 23, I was shocked and immediately started researching lymphoma. I found the Light the Night Walk and went the following weekend. I had yet to tell people, but my family went with me. At the event, I met Josh from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, who checked in on me every week.

PNL WHERE DOES YOUR STORY START?

PNL WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

AH Last year, this time, I was living in Buckhead, working as a

solution analyst at the Weather Channel and involved with the community as an active member of the Atlanta Junior League and Women in Technology group. I was always running in Chastain Park, or spending time with my family, friends or boyfriend.

AH In Dec. 2014, I started chemo. I lost my hair, which was difficult, and bought a wig. I never wore it. It was challenging to go to the store and be bald, but I saw it as an opportunity to meet people and talk about lymphoma. I have two more cycles and a New Orleans trip planned for when it’s over.

PNL WHAT WAS THE FIRST SIGN THAT SOMETHING MIGHT BE WRONG?

PNL HOW DID YOU GET THROUGH IT?

AH I have always been active –rarely slowing down for anything.

Ever since I was a kid, I enjoyed running. During my runs, I started to notice that I wasn’t running as far. Around that time, I started having night sweats and losing my appetite. I figured it was just stress.

AH My family, boyfriend and workplace have been an incredible support system. My sister was pregnant throughout the entire time and stood by my side for every appointment. The Atlanta Hawks even hosted a fundraising night, which brought more than 200 people out for the cause.

PNL WHEN DID YOU REALIZE IT WAS SOMETHING MORE?

PNL WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO WAS RECENTLY

AH In October last year, I noticed a swollen lymph node on my neck.

DIAGNOSED WITH LYMPHOMA?

I went to a few doctors but was told it was just abnormal. A friend recommended I try a different hospital, where they took a biopsy and discovered two inflamed lymph nodes. I immediately went into surgery. Right after, lymph nodes in my armpits and groin swelled, and I was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

AH Take a deep breath. I was always organized and in control – the

person in the family who everyone went to with their problems. All of a sudden, I was the one who needed help. Be open and honest about how you are feeling. Accept that nothing is perfect and not always in your control.

PNL WHAT DID THE DOCTORS SAY?

PNL HAS THIS EXPERIENCED CHANGED YOUR PERSONAL OR PROFES-

AH The doctor said I needed to get treatment within a year,

SIONAL GOALS? IF SO, HOW?

or I would have a 95 percent chance of dying. He assured me that my age and activity level should help and that I needed to undergo chemotherapy.

AH I would like to raise awareness of lymphoma and become more involved with children who have cancer. I strongly believe that sharing your story can help others.

PNL WHAT WERE YOUR IMMEDIATE THOUGHTS AFTER THE DIAGNOSIS?

enoarchaeology is the study of vanished off world, science fiction cultures through the artifacts they leave behind. Rob Maxam is an authority. Maxam, the successful vice president of sales for Sub Zero and Wolf Luxury Appliances for the Southeast. For more than 20 years, Maxam has been equipping the homes of celebrities, athletes and the affluent with what he terms the "Ferraris of kitchen appliances.” After hours however, Rob spends time with wife Donna and their kids Jake, Madisen and Mackenzie—and entertains his guiltless obsession collecting paraphernalia associated with the greatest science fiction series in film, Star Wars. During a tour of his “man cave” in his spacious home in Alpharetta, Rob provided humorous commentary on how his home office walls became adorned with hundreds of figures, statues, au-

duced into my world. I travel to these shows periodically and add all types of figures and props to my collection. I also have bought display fixtures from stores that go out of business that can house the figures in a museum-like setting.” Rob on his favorite items from his collection: “My favorite pieces are the bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back. Boba Fett is the baddest bounty hunter in the galaxy and very sought after by collectors.” Rob on how much he has invested in his collection: “I basically know how much money I have spent but for the sake of keeping my marriage intact, I have declined to tell anyone. Some people have a 401K plan, I have plastic action figures.” Rob’s favorite Star Wars episode: “My favorite episode is the original movie from 1977, A New Hope. I was 13 at the time of the

Rob Maxam in his kingdom thentic helmets, posters, weapons and even clocks themed from George Lucas' ingenious cinematic creations. How Rob’s collection was launched: “It all started after a conversation I had with a friend and how we both agreed that Star Wars was the best movie ever created. The next day he gave me a box that had some brand new Star Wars figures inside. I couldn’t believe they still were making these toys even though the movie had ended a decade earlier. The next day I went to the local Wal-Mart and Toys-R-Us and discovered a whole section dedicated to the movie, so I bought a couple pieces, and then the next week, and so on.” Where Rob shops: “I went online and discovered that you could go to conventions all over the country like Comic-Con, Dragon Con, International Toy and the FX [Vintage Toy] Show. These shows are where serious collectors and fans go to meet the actual actors from the original movie and trade with other collectors from around the world. This is where I found the original figures still in mint condition; a whole new world of expense was intro-

original release and the first time I saw Darth Vader walk into the scene, I was hooked. My younger brother was also hooked and we bought tremendous amounts of the toy figures as kids. We look back now and cry at how many of those figures we blew up with firecrackers or shot with our BB guns. Now I spend thousands for what I used to pay a couple dollars for. What Rob has planned for the future: “My future plans are to convert the rest of the basement into the ultimate Star Wars man cave. I am going to make a poker table that will have Han Solo in carbonite as the playing surface, convert the home theater area into the Death Star control room, and light all the areas with different colored light sabers. Once my wife reads this, I will be living in the basement any ways. “As for the collection, I plan to continue focusing on completing the original released figures from the first three movies and to continue purchasing artwork that can be displayed throughout the man cave.” June 2015 | PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com

Blumberg Believes

rostate cancer is a disease that will affect one in seven American men in their lifetime. That is one in seven fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, grandfathers, partners and friends who will be diagnosed with the disease. For Joe Blumberg, executive director of The Men's Health and Wellness Center, the issue hits close to home. Joe was diagnosed with prostate cancer when he was 65, and though the tumor was removed he discovered that it had spread just two years later. Joe has tried many treatments to combat his advanced stage disease and recently passed the five-year mark, but the reality of the disease is always in his thoughts. As a national nonprofit organization, ZERO is a leader in the fight against prostate cancer, advancing research, encouraging action, and providing education and support to men and their families. This year, ZERO will bring the Run/Walk series to nearly 40 cities nationwide, in-

cluding to Sandy Springs for the Fifth Annual ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk – Atlanta, hosted by the Men's Health and Wellness Center of Sandy Springs on Saturday, June 20. Joe will emcee the event, welcoming runners and supporters alike to the city he called home for more than three decades. Joe is always hoping that new treatments will emerge, and believes that the Run/ Walk has helped create awareness and bring the local Atlanta community together in the fight against prostate cancer. As a part of the fight, Joe champions the importance of funding programs on both the local and national level. At the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk – Atlanta, and at all races nationwide, all dollars raised for the event are split between national efforts and the local community. Local funds for the Atlanta race will specifically provide education and screening events and help prostate cancer support groups. All dollars raised on the national level go toward ZERO’s efforts to save lives by advancing research, raising awareness, and providing educational resources for men and families. This year's race features a 5K run/ walk, 1-mile walk, Kids Superhero Dash for Dad, and virtual Snooze for Dudes program. Joe is this year’s race director. On race day, survivors and patients can also stop by the Prostate Cancer Survivor's tent to connect with others, and Home Depot will host a kids' workshop featuring a special Build a Father's Day gift for your Dad. The Run/Walk series is ZERO’s commitment made manifest. It is communities coming together, raising funds, and sharing hope to declare one number above others: ZERO. To register, visit: ZeroProstateCancerRun.org/Atlanta. ZERO's premier programs include the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/ Walk, the largest men's health event series in America. The family-friendly Run/Walk series is a huge step in the fight to achieve Generation ZERO – the first generation of men free from prostate cancer.

Milkweed is More Than Just A Pretty Weed ARTICLE ALAN MOTHNER

E

very year 100 million monarch butterflies make an extraordinary journey, some of them traveling all the way from Canada to the Transvolcanic Mountains in Mexico, where they spend the winter. However, these major pollinators in American gardens, fields and farms and a critical element in our food supply are disappearing and could soon become an endangered species. In the last 20 years. The Xerces Society, a major butterfly research organization, estimates that the population of Monarch butterflies has declined from over 1 billion in 1992 to an estimated 35 million in the winter of 2013-14. That represents a 96 percent loss of Monarchs over a 20-year period. So what’s causing this massive decline? What’s happened to all the Monarchs? Monarchs must have milkweed. They have an obligate relationship with this family of plants. Monarch caterpillars exclusively eat milkweed plants as they begin the process of metamorphism and become butterflies. No milkweed = no monarchs. Many localities treat milkweed as a noxious weed and destroy it, usually by spraying herbicide which kills both the milkweed and adult nectaring plants. This happens along highway edges, public parks, in agricultural settings, and in residential developments. Pesticide use also kills huge numbers of Monarch eggs, larva, and adults. Habitat destruction for development of new roads, housing developments, commercial development, and agricultural expansion has negative consequences for Monarchs. The Dunwoody Nature Center is embarking on a major initiative called The Milkweed Project to help protect the monarch butterfly by raising awareness of the troubling decline of the population, and by launching a grassroots effort to plant more milkweed throughout the community to improve local habitat and help the Monarch on its migratory journey. Program initiatives include: The Nature Center has partnered with Post Properties to purchase mature plants for distribution and Post Properties has pledged to plant Milkweed Gardens at all of their properties in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh. The UPS Foundation has partnered with the Nature Center for the project and has committed $11,700 towards purchasing plants 24

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | June 2015

and educational materials to help further raise awareness of the troubling decline of the monarch population. The Nature Center is collaborating with the Dunwoody elementary schools (and beyond as funding becomes available) to educate and bring the experience into the classroom with butterfly rearing kits, grow racks, seeds, and other instructional items. In addition, the Nature Center is providing each school with milkweed and other pollinator plants, and will oversee the planting of them at the schools. Thee Nature Center will become a certified Monarch Waystation. The new front entry garden is being planted with native plants, pollinators, hardscape, and of course, milkweed. The City of Dunwoody has committed to support the Milkweed Project by allocating space in each of the city parks for milkweed and by working with the Nature Center on an education campaign with the city landscaping staff to eliminate the use of Roundup in these areas. At the 22nd annual Butterfly Festival – August 15 – the monarch butterfly will be the focus. As the signature event of the Nature Center, this day of entertainment will be utilized to educate all ages about the wonders and fragility of the monarch butterfly species. You can help keep milkweed – and the Monarch butterflies – alive by planting a milkweed garden in areas that lie along the migratory route. DunwoodyNature.org

2015 Nissan Juke NISMO RS "JUKE" MEANS TO DODGE AND MAKE A NEW PATH. NISSAN COULDN’T BE MORE RIGHT. ARTICLE DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF NISSAN

W

hen the all-new Nissan Juke hit the streets back in 2010, its rave reviews for both this 5-door hatchback’s sporty, street-terrorizing performance, and curvy, revolutionary exterior compared to other runof-the-mill hatchbacks confirmed it was here to stay. Now coming in three different trims depending on the Clydesdales under the hood and physical enhancements—the Juke, Juke NISMO and Juke NISMO RS (excluding the steroidal GT-R–powered Juke-R)—we were blessed with the latter RS dressed in Brilliant Silver exterior to review. Thankfully, the aggressive 1.6 turbocharged engine spanking 216 horses; six-speed manual (Yes!); top speed of 135 mph; NIS-

MO RS performance exhaust; sport-tuned suspension; Alcantara and leather-wrapped steering wheel; ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System); VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control); TCS (Traction Control System); EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution); and other performance-enhancing amenities justified its looks rivaling anything leaving skid marks in a Fast and Furious film. The eye-popping design complete with 18-inch alloy wheels; front grille; rear spoiler; chrome exhaust; LED daytime running lights; welcomed demonic red accenting the entire interior including the dash and slick, body hugging Recaro® driver front passenger seats; and overall physique that would make

a bodybuilder jealous, made the RS a must for anyone demanding an adventurous drive many exotic cars deliver for a fraction of the price ($28,020). And don’t let its shell mimicking a two-door sports car fool you. The back doors’ handles are elevated and camouflaged into the frame, but our 6’-8” front passenger still fit comfortably, so the interior is still accommodating to virtually anyone. Considering all of the power and racing features the Juke NISMO RS boasts, gas mileage still graciously remains a non-concern with numbers averaging 27 miles to the gallon (25 city/31 highway). While we favor the manual transmission for the true sports feel, automatic is also available so that all bases are covered. The standout features on the technology side include the Around View® Monitor with moving object detection; push button ignition; hands-free texting assistant; a 5.8inch color monitor; Bluetooth capabilities; a booming Rockford Fosgate® ecoPunch™ premium sound system; and the signature NissanConnect™ with navigation and mobile apps add to the RS’ value. Ultimately, this 2015 Juke NISMO RS effortless paddles against the mainstream with the impressive numbers in every category to prove it. For more information, visit NissanUSA.com

Parting Thoughts

Meet Dennis Milton Byron WORDS DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON

G

reetings everyone. My name is Dennis Malcolm Byron and have been fortunate to contribute to Lifestyle Publications for more than two years covering automobiles, travel, interesting people, shooting covers, and every so often disclosing the wonders of beer under my alias Ale Sharpton. When I happened to invite my father, Dennis Milton Byron, to one of our magazine’s celebratory functions, the staff really gravitated towards him—especially editor, Sue Collins and publisher, Jim Newman. For this June issue, they asked if I could share a few words about him. This was a no-brainer and I was happy to oblige. My father—a son of Jamaican descendants who set up shop literally in the Bronx, New York, (they had the Byron Catering Company)—was raised with the value of family, hard work, honesty and giving. Throughout the years, he applied these attributes to everything he did, resulting in attending four colleges including the University of Albuquerque, Syracuse, Ithaca College and Cornell University, taking courses that would prepare him for a successful career in philanthropy, consulting and fundraising (which he popularly terms “friendraising”). To flourish in this business, he had to make strong contacts, meet amazing people, travel extensively, and exude his vibrant personality, while most importantly providing his family the best experiences he could afford alongside his late wife and the best mother on earth, Brenda. Because of my parents, my three siblings Rashad, Lamont, Simone and I got to see so much of the world. I am the oldest of the quartet, so let’s just say, a handful early on. I received the most discipline and in many ways, the most attention. I even-

tually utilized these experiences in seeing the struggles my father endured, having lived in extremely modest accommodations to large homes in some of the finest neighborDennis Milton Byron hoods. I also learned success comes from practicing the simple things in life, from always shaking hands with a tight grip to being yourself, learning to speak up, treating everyone as an equal, accepting adversity and dealing with it, and simply loving life. This led me to follow in his footsteps, attending Cornell University, networking, and hitting the ground running, developing the courage to explore what I am passionate about. I owe so much of my drive, charisma and business mind to my father. And I am proud to have the same name (although we can be “Menaces” when we want to). A trip to Thailand as a graduation present was our most bonding moment, and since then, I became more open to whatever came my way. Ultimately, I thank God for him. I want to thank the great people of Perimeter North Lifestyle for providing me the opportunity to share this with you. I ask that if you have the chance, you give your father a hug for everything he has done for you. I will do the same, along with a firm grip that made me the man I am today.
