Hello, friends.

s you might have guessed, you're going to see some beautiful image of pets in this issue. Isn't our cover adorable? Atlanta photographer Rupa Kapoor works with children and pets, as well as brides and executives. Her favorite? You guessed it - pups like Levi (pictured below at 5 weeks old and celebrating his one-year birthday). Rupa followed the life of this little cleft-palate puppy who was raised by Alabama Boston Terrier Rescue (ABTR.org). He has now grown into a handsome, gorgeous boy and has had surgery to overcome his issues The proud editor and her family and is still awaiting the perfect forever home! Pet rescue organizations abound here in the southeast, including Atlanta's own Angels Among Us (AngelsAmongUsAnimalRescue.org), Fur Kids (FurKids.org), Atlanta Humane Society (AtlantaHumane.org) and Paws Atlanta (PawsAtlanta.org). Our family has two cats, and I can't remember a time when our household didn't have a rescue cat. My husband and three children are admittedly more cat lovers than I am, but our home wouldn't be a home without Tommy and Johnny (named after Die Hard's John McClane). Tell us about your pets on our Facebook page (Facebook.com/ BuckHavenLifestyle). Bring your family (but please leave your pets at home in the shade) to the Brookhaven Chili Cook Off on October 10 from noon - 6 p.m. We'll be there polling YOU for your favorites, snapping photos for the next magazine. See you there! BrookhavenChiliCookoff.com Have a delightful October with your family and pets and don't forget to share your pics on our FB page!

RAY’S GOES TEX-MEX Ray’s Rio Bravo, the latest incarnation of the beloved Rio Bravo (c. 1984 to 1995) is now open for business in Sandy Springs and serving its Tex-Mex favorites for both lunch and dinner. “We’ve gotten thousands of requests over the years to bring back this restaurant that so many people loved,” says owner Ray Schoenbaum, original owner of Rio Bravo and founder of Ray's Restaurants. "It has been a lot of fun dusting off the original recipe books, recreating our ‘secret formulas,’ and even adding new menu items to cater to people’s evolving tastes.” Ray’s Rio Bravo has an updated industrial design with authentic stucco and exposed brick and ductwork. The restaurant seats more than 186 guests and there’s a patio dining area, which Schoenbaum plans to expand in the coming weeks, and a semi-private mezzanine space for fiestas accommodating 25 guests. 6450 Powers Ferry Road. KEEP PETS SAFE According to a study by the ASPCA, while 80 percent of pet owners report that they believe it is either very or extremely important for animals to wear ID tags, only 33 percent of that population report always having ID tags on their pets. Not only can it be a pain to try and attach pet tags to the metal ring on collars, many own10

ers also don’t have a collar on their pet because they don’t want to listen to the jangling of tags. Pawdentify is the first pet tag that is virtually silent. Made from a plastic polymer, Pawdentify tags are available in 109 designs and colors that can be customized with up to fifteen lines of rabies, medical and identification information for a pet. Heavenly (Dog) Bed LOCAL HOTELS THAT WELCOME PETS

A

ARTICLE MARY WELCH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

mericans own more than 62 million dogs, according to the Travel Industry Association, and 29 million of them bring their pets when they travel. That means that hotels, including many in the Perimeter area, not only accept pets but welcome them with open arms, comfortable beds and treats. The Westin Atlanta Perimeter on Concourse Pkwy. appreciates its canine visitors and offers them a doggie version of its upscale Heavenly Bed® with piping trim. Many Westin Hotels offer a doggie welcome kit that includes waste bags, rubber gloves, a Westin Collar tag (in case the pet gets lost) and a food and water bowl. They also provide a special door hanger telling housekeeping that there is a pet in the room. The Sheraton Atlanta Perimeter, which like the Westin is part of Starwood Hotels, also has a special pup bed called Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Beds. The dog beds are custom designed oversized pet pillows, compete with duvet. Other local hotels that welcome pets are Hyatt Place Atlanta Perimeter, Sonesta ES Suites, Staybridge Suite Atlanta Perimeter, Extended Stay Atlanta Perimeter and Le Meridien Hotel. Each has its own rules regarding how many pets they will accept and the weight. In addition, each has different charges for allowing a pet in the room as well as the check out cleaning fee. So there are no surprises, it is best to call the hotel ahead of time to see whether they accept pets and and to learn about any special regulations. 12

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | October 2015

The Sonesta ES Suites, for instance, requires documentation from a vet that the pet is up-to-date on vacinations. Dr. Mark R. St. Onge, DVM, and owner of Buckhaven Veterinary Clinic, says the key to success is preparation. “If you’re traveling by air, check the regulations. It’s very common for airlines to require that you have a certificate of health. Now most of the time they don’t ask it, but you don’t want to gamble and get the only person who gets the TSA agent who demands one. Getting it is very simple,” he says. Anxiety and motion sickness are other problems. Dr. St. Onge recommends not feeding or giving your pet water before the trip. He says there are a variety of medications, such as Cerenia, that can help control vomiting and anxiety. “Sometimes the answer is giving your pet Benadryl but consult your vet for the proper dosage. If you overdose, the worst is that you pet will sleep his butt off.” He also recommends bringing the routine on the road. If the pet uses a jacket to reduce stress from noise such as thunder, bring it on the trip. If your pet enjoys being in its cage and finds it soothing, take it. Also, even though you are enjoying the local cuisine, it may not be good for Fido. Bring their regular food. “Just because you’re at the beach doesn’t mean your pet needs to eat crab legs, oysters and shrimp,” he says. With a little preparation and a great Perimeter area hotel, the entire family will have a fantastic hotel experience.

ave you ever driven through Historic Brookhaven and been taken aback by the beautiful landscape and architecture? You may have even found yourself wondering if you were still in the heart of a city known for its traffic and high rises. Now, your curiosity can be cured with a ticket to the Historic Brookhaven Candlelight Tour of Homes on Thursday, October 1. This prestigious biennial event benefits Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities (ARMHC) and features homes that date back to the early and mid 1900s. The 2015 Tour is presented by Beacham & Company Realtors and The Skogstad-Sodemann Team. Five of Historic Brookhaven’s most impressive and beautifully decorated homes will be featured on the Tour. All of the Tour’s homes range in style and size but carry the common denominator of being the homeowner’s sanctuary for comfort, sophistication and style. “All proceeds from the Tour will help provide meals, emotional support and all the comforts of home to families of ill and injured children receiving medical treatment at local hospitals,” says Tour Committee Co-Chair Dawn Anderson. She also noted the long history of the Brookhaven community being “tremendously generous and kind in opening their homes and hearts to the Charity.” This year’s event also includes an elegant luncheon and fashion show presented by TOOTSIES on Wednesday, October 7. The location for the luncheon will be revealed to ticket-holders only! How exciting! For tickets to the tour and luncheon call 678.704.8099 or visit ARMHC.org/BrookhavenTour. BuckHaven Lifestyle is proud to support this nonprofit and beautiful event. Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization committed to nurturing the health and well-being of children and families. The two Atlanta Houses have provided a home away from home to more than 45,000 families since the first House opened in 1979. October 2015 | PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com

1 in 5 Lung Cancer Patients Never Smoked “More women die from lung cancer than from breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer combined,” says Dr. John Moore of the northside Hospital cancer institute. “it’s not just a smoker’s disease. family history and environmental surroundings are also large contributing factors.”

T

he statistics are sobering. The fiveyear survival rate of lung cancer patients is just 15 percent. It’s the leading cause of cancer death among American men and women, and it will claim an estimated 150,000 lives in 2015 alone. But despite the grim realities, the pulmonary physicians of Northside Hospital are more optimistic than ever that lung cancer can be beaten. “If lung cancer is caught early enough, the survival rate is greater than 90 percent,” says Dr. John E. Moore, Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Medical Director of the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute Lung Cancer Program. “With early diagnosis and aggressive treatment, we have a chance to flip these mortality rates.”

The Power of Early Detection Because early symptoms of lung cancer can be misidentified as bronchitis or asthma, many patients are diagnosed during later, less curable stages. Proactive screening and early detection of lung cancer dramatically improves disease survival.

“Low-dose CT scans are the best way to detect the disease before it spreads,” says Dr. Howard Silverboard, Medical Director of the Lung Screening Program and Chairman of Lung Oncology Steering Committee at Northside Hospital Cancer Institute. “It’s important that men and women view lung cancer screenings as part of their regular annual healthcare maintenance regimen, just like mammograms and colonoscopies.”

Advancements in Treatment At Northside Hospital, great strides are taken to ensure patients experience a smooth and seamless treatment plan following the detection of cancer.

“It can be overwhelming to receive a cancer diagnosis and then need to schedule all the necessary followup appointments,” acknowledges Dr. Silverboard. “This is why we’ve added a nurse navigator to help patients overcome logistical obstacles to care. Additionally, all our nurses are specifically trained in lung cancer care to help patients recover as quickly as possible.” Dr. Moore notes that over half the lung cancer surgeries at Northside Hospital are performed with minimally invasive thoracoscopic (VATS) and robotic techniques that yield some of the most successful results in the country, even when compared to other prestigious lung cancer programs. Northside Hospital also embraces the power of molecular-based treatment, which targets individual genetic mutations in order to spare healthy cells and reduce side effects. “Our commitment to lung cancer care and treatment is unwavering because all of our patients deserve our best,” says Dr. Silverboard.

Small Subjects Photographers Capture Big Personalities with Children and Pets ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY FROM CONTRIBUTORS

Katey Penton

Laura Brett

P

hotographers have a unique view of the world. They see things we don’t see and gracefully capture subtle smiles, gestures and personality galore. Lifestyle Publications invited Atlanta’s hottest photographers who spend their days working with children and pets, to share their favorite images and explain how they manage to tame the cranky, feisty and fun! They all agreed parents should relax and let them do what they do best. “Try to remember we are surrounded by newborns at least 6 -8 times a week. Just sit back relax and just enjoy this time without having to worry about your new sweet love crying,” says veteran Laura Brett of Laura Brett Photography. Another pro, Katey Penton suggests parents bring treats and toys that will help the little ones to cooperate and choose a time for your session when your child will be in a good mood. Avoid nap and meal times. “And, it can be good to choose a place where the child is comfortable and familiar,” Penton says. Similarly, when photographing pets, remember pets can pick up on stress from their owner if the owner is overly worried about the pet posing this way or that way, says Atlanta pet photographer, Leesia Teh. She says expect to pay around $250 for a one-pet shoot, and another $500 - $2,000 on prints and products like gallery wrapped canvases or albums. Rates for photographers who work with kids start around $150 for the first hour and one child, increasing as the number of subjects and hours are added.

Atlanta’s own Cameron Adams adds that these rates should get parents an unlimited use of images, too. When deciding on what the kids should wear, photographer Oana Hogrefe chimes in: "Clothing should be about comfort, and for families, a palette rather than specific colors. For instance, earth tones instead of all browns. Allow the children to be involved in choosing their clothes or at least some beloved accessories or toys!” And, if you’re planning for an outdoor session, grab a morning or late afternoon session for a beautiful glow form natural light. “We want all of our parents to sit back, relax and enjoy the session. Don't worry about if your baby will cooperate or not. We have been doing this a long time and there isn't anything we can't handle!” promises photographer Jess Kamm, whose studio is in North Buckhead. Enjoy these gorgeous images and.... SMILE!

Your Neighbor Mayor Davis in charge

Mike and Mary Pat Davis

Dunwoody's First Dogs ARTICLE VALERIE SHEPHERD | PHOTOGRAPHY NICOLE STEPHENS

I

f you’ve ever wondered what a “dog person” was, spend a few minutes with Dunwoody Mayor Mike Davis and his wife Mary Pat Davis. Davis may help govern the city of Dunwoody, but it is clear Butternut and Daisy, their beloved 9-year old Pooschon sister pooches rule the roost at home. Mary Pat Davis says the dogs came into their lives offering comfort right away. “It had been a hard start to that particular year; my father had passed as had our previous dog.” But Mary Pat’s daughter Carolyn pleaded the case for getting two new pups, not just one, and enter Butternut and Daisy, the dogs with personality plus. The Davis’s have four grown daughters and four grandchildren, but the two dogs are important members of their family. Mary Pat Davis has a spark of love and humor in her eyes when she speaks of “the girls.” At home, the two think the deer who

wander through their back yard are their The First Pups best friends and don’t understand why their excitement isn’t matched. “When we go to the dog park they like to sit on the bench and ‘dog watch,’ like people, it’s hilarious.” These dogs just don’t think they are dogs, Mary Pat smiles. Mayor Davis is proud that the city has such fantastic parks for both people and pets. A true fan of Dunwoody, the mayor boasts the value of the many job opportunities, plentiful executive housing, proximity to Atlanta, walkable neighborhoods and some of the best hospitals in the southeast. So, where might you find Butternut and Daisy out and about enjoying Dunwoody? “Our dogs don’t really understand the concept of leashes – so we don’t take them out to eat often – but when we do we love to go to Village Burger and sit outside,” says Mary Pat with a chuckle.

nticipation is building as the Children’s Museum of Atlanta lays the groundwork for its massive renovation. The $8.2 million project, set to be completed in late 2015, will add two new exhibits, a 3,000-square-foot mezzanine level, permanent performance space, enhanced learning zones with state-of-the art technology and many other upgrades to existing spaces that will completely transform the experience for families. “This is the Museum’s first major transformation since opening our doors 12 years ago, and we can’t wait to reveal all of our big improvements with the community later this year!” says Jane Turner, Sandy Springs resident and executive director of the Children’s Museum of Atlanta. As Atlanta’s only children’s museum, this nonprofit organization was among the first to take an important step toward the revitalization of downtown Atlanta with its opening in 2003. Now, alongside the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, Center for Civil and Human Rights, College Football Hall of Fame and many other top

attractions, the Children’s Museum of Atlanta has become an iconic gathering place for families representing the importance of early childhood education and the “Power of Play” philosophy. “This revamp has been a long time coming,” says Turner. “We’ve taken into account several years of extensive and thoughtful planning as well as combined feedback from our members, visitors, educators, industry experts and established Children’s Museums around the country to ensure every detail of the redesigned Museum will be reflective of our community’s needs.” Once completed, the newly renovated space will feature targeted, age-appropriate programming with the adaptability to correspond to changing themes, enabling the Museum to be a source for hands-on, experiential learning and engagement. In addition to literacy; culture and geography; social and emotional; and health and wellness, Children’s Museum programming will have a new focus on STEAM (science, technology,

engineering, arts and math education) to equip young visitors with the skills needed to drive innovation, foster critical thinking and make meaningful connections between school, community, work and global issues. The Museum is currently closed to the public for renovation work, but the learning hasn’t stopped. Until they are ready to unveil the new-and-improved space, the Museum team is bringing educational activities to various locations throughout the Atlanta area with their “Imaginators On The Go!” program. The Imaginators are the Museum’s dedicated troupe of professional actors and educators. “The Children’s Museum actually began in the late 1980s as a Museum Without Walls concept,” says Turner. “Until we officially opened our physical space, we put all of our efforts into community outreach – going to schools in the nearby neighborhoods and engaging children in the power of play. While the Museum undergoes renovation work this fall, we see it as an opportunity to reconnect with our mobile-based history and bring a piece of the Children’s Museum out into the community.”

ince 1998, the 2015 Lincoln Navigator continues to scratch that itch for motorists who desire a luxury SUV geared towards providing an almost regal, king-of-the-road experience. The carmaker happily boasts “improved utility, craftsmanship and comfort,” and the difference is certainly noticeable. Its heightened efficiency in ’15 raises eyebrows as well; this model possesses a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 heart which packs 380 horsepower and 16/20 city/highway miles per gallon (17 miles per gallon combined). Sporting a considerably large frame and expansive cabin sitting on 22-inch polished aluminum wheels, this dynamic vessel demands its space—and will get it—while maneuverability, riding comfort, and overall road feel remain uncompromised. Drivers sit advantageously high for optimal visibility, and up to eight passengers enjoy

numerous amenities in their plush leather seats. From the MyLincoln Touch, voice-activated navigation controls, trailer sway control, power-folding seats, and wood/leather steering wheel for the pilot, to the THX-certified audio system, ambient lighting, power moonroof, and dual climate control for the entire crew to relish, everyone gets pampered especially during long road trips. With all of these enhancements and high-volume towing capability [(9,000 lbs. (4x2)/8,600 lbs. (4x4)], the 2015 Navigator leaves little to be desired in the large luxury SUV segment. Parting Thoughts

Waiting for Schnapps WORDS BEN HAMMETT WALKUSKI

P

ets were taken so seriously in my household growing up that my dad would refer to one dog as his “number two son.” I hope that meant I was number one. The company, companionship and love of many wonderful animals more than compensated for any loneliness that might have come from being an only child. From the day my parents brought me home from the hospital to the day I finally moved out for good nearly 24 years later, our pets were simply part of the family. No matter where we lived, which included eight houses across two states, and a cast of live-in girlfriends, boyfriends and grandmothers, a house was not a home without at least one four-legged friend to greet us, protect us and keep us warm. Whether the purpose they served was functional or pure joy, our pets were there with us—and for us. The first dog in my life was Schnapps, who would innocently roll around in the herb garden and come inside smelling of cilantro—an association that forever ruined the herb for my mother. I recall the first Christmas that sister kittens, Thelma and Louise spent with us, climbing the trunk of our Christmas tree, knocking it and many prized ornaments straight

34

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | October 2015

to the ground. Then there was the mother-son mouser duo of Zoe and Heba (a name inspired by the cat food brand Sheba), who diligently kept our home rodent-free for many years. My mother’s prized Humane Society rescue was Eddie, a handsome and lovable mutt who protected her and served as a source of love and light through one winning battle with cancer and another losing battle. When my mother was gone, Eddie, Thelma and Louise were still there, comforting me with their presence and the gift of fond memories. Since we moved to Atlanta four years ago, we have fostered four cats and a dog with widely varying health, behavior and overall condition. Balancing the many challenges of adulthood, including pet ownership, has been a greater challenge than I ever could have imagined as a child growing up. The experience has filled me with awe and gratitude for the enormous responsibility and sheer love that my parents possessed and exuded seemingly without effort. As we seek to support ourselves, nurture our relationships, advance our careers, maintain a home, and fill our lives with joy, I am hopeful that one day soon a pet will again become part of the family.
