Editor’s Letter

Respect your elders. L

ike the beautiful antique car on the front cover, older residents of our community should be cared for, loved and respected. In this issue, we highlight some of the ways the Parker and Douglas County communities care for our aging population - from an annual Senior Stroll to the growing number of senior life care centers and communities. We’re also taking a look this month at ways in which all of us can improve our health and extend our lives through dance and massage.

The Douglas County School District recently honored its top staffers and educators with its 2015 Apple Awards. One of those recipients, Mary Lisa Harper of Mammoth Heights Elementary School, is featured in this issue as we look at the innovative approach that led to her award as the 2015 Pioneer in Education. In honor of Mother’s Day, our Parting Thoughts feature highlights two area women who enjoy motherhood, despite some difficult challenges. We hope you enjoy their stories as you look forward to spending time with your families this Mother’s Day.

Annual PROM-Us Dance Offers a Fun Evening Out About 175 people attended the Annual PROM-Us dance for developmentally disabled teens and adults, and their friends on March 13 at Parker United Methodist Church. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Parker, Parker United Methodist Church and Rotary Community Corps, PROM-Us is a free event held annually. This year’s celebration included dinner, pictures and dancing to the music of JJ McKay from Kool Gold Radio. The students at the Colorado Early College Workforce class adopted the prom, so they provided all the set up and decorations, took individual pictures, served refreshments, and cleaned up after the event.

The Senior Center also will raise funds by offering parking for $5 during Parker Days June 12-14, and $5 fried chicken dinners June 20 in O’Brien Park - before the Movie in the Park.

Parker Days Offers Concerts, Funnel Cakes, Ferris Wheels and Fun The Parker Days Festival celebrates its 38th year of creative community entertainment with many new experiences over the weekend of June 12-14 in downtown Parker. Three stages will be busy throughout the event. The Main Stage will host That 80s Band, Guild of Ages, Tunisia and The Long Run. The Pikes Peak Stage will feature performers sponsored by the PACE Center, while more than 100 young artists will be on the Community Stage. On Saturday, June 13, the annual parade will begin at 10 a.m. Afterwards, local athletes will test their limits at the Strongman Competition. The newly enhanced carnival areas will have all the favorite rides and treats, while street performers will entertain on street corners. The food and beverage area will satisfy anyone’s thirst, hunger and sweet tooth with offerings from old-fashioned soda pop and fruit smoothies to Philly cheese steaks, berry kabobs and snow cones. Check out festival details at ParkerDaysFestival.com.

Salina Gonzales, Rhianna Klene and Michael Klene enjoy the dance.

Spring Style Tips From Marla

Wondering how to jazz up your wardrobe in the warmer weather? According to Marla Smith with Marvelous Style by Marla, the spring season should be fun and cheerful, with maybe stacks of bangles and rings worn in multiples, and leather handbags that can look sweet and rugged, and can be worn both day and night. “Volume in clothes is the word now,” Marla says. “Pleated and gathered skirts, billowy blouses, lightweight, slouchy duster coats, kimono wraps and oversized breezy tunics suggest effortlessness.”

As for hairstyles and make-up, she says, they “are on the sultry side. Black eyeliner has returned. Hair also goes up in a fanned out bun now, as styles have an experimental edge. Perfect hair means sassy hair that looks and feels like you didn’t try too hard.”

Parker Task Force Fundraiser set for June 15 Plans are underway for the Seventh Annual Parker Task Force Golf Tournament scheduled for June 15 at the Spring Valley Golf Club in Elizabeth. The money raised from the golf tournament and silent auction will go toward the non-profit’s Capital Campaign. The Parker Task Force is a volunteer organization celebrating 28 years of service to those in need in the Parker area. To learn the number of ways you can involved in the fundraiser, please visit ParkerTaskForce.org.

Parker Hawks Add Cheerleading The Hawks are excited to announce the addition of cheerleading to their family of sports. The cheer program will teach girls and boys cheerleading basics, and introduce youth to sideline cheer as well as cheerleading competitions. Registration is now open and runs through June 30 for 5- to 14-year-olds. Registration fees, which will be $215 per child, include practice twice a week, cheering at Hawks football games, use of pom poms and performance at the super bowl. For more information, visit ParkerHawks.org.

Open House and Adoption Day at Harmony Equine Center Horse lovers of all ages are invited to the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center on Saturday, May 16, for its fourth annual open house and adoption day. The free event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the center, 5540 E. Highway 86, just west of Franktown. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, educational programs, games and activities for kids, and refreshments from local food truck vendors, as well as meet horses available for adoption. The

Pam Ninness Story A New-Found Love of Dance Brings Great Change

Fred Astaire instructor Garrett Rodgers with dance partner Pam Ninness after she won Top Newcomer Student.

Article Susan Cormier | Photography Provided

F

or a person who has never liked to exercise and has struggled with her weight for 30 years, Pam Ninness got a new lease on life when she discovered hypnotherapy and dance. Pam’s story, which involves winning a dance competition and the loss of more than 70 pounds, began in December 2013, when Pam and her husband, Tom, were on a trip to Israel. “I was very heavy and having difficulty walking through the sights,” Pam says. “I was depressed, angry and trying to sort out why my body would not drop weight.” She then found Grace Bradley, CCHt, of 5280 Hypnotherapy and Parker Weight Loss, who helped her with the mental and dietary issues before suggesting in April 2014 that Pam start exercising. “I’ve never been a big exercise person…. I don’t like to walk. We live up here in the Pinery, and there are no sidewalks, and I’ve turned my ankle more times than I care to count,” she says. “I certainly wasn’t going to go the gym at the size I was.” Then she saw an ad for Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Parker. "I've always loved Fred Astaire, so that caught my eye immediately.” So she and her husband of nearly 38 years signed up for the beginning course, and Pam became hooked. “I was immediately in love with it. I thought, ‘I can do this and it's fun’." Then she took it a step further by entering the regional Freddy Award Ball competition in North Carolina in March, dancing with Garrett Rodgers, one of the instructors from the Parker Fred Astaire Dance Studio, and winning Top Newcomer Student.

Instructors Lyndsy Perkins and Garrett Rodgers

“Our Fred Astaire students always do very well in regional and national events,” says Mary Jo Harvel, owner of Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Parker and Westminster. “I think the learning environment created by the Fred Astaire instructors makes it fun and easy so people are able to really focus and learn from a very positive teaching style.” Pam agrees, saying she has taken lessons from both Garrett and A.J. Morris. “Their styles are completely different. They’re both excellent. I was getting different aspects from both of them,” she says. “I explained to them what I was doing, that this was part of a weightloss program, and they really worked my butt off…. They understand what I’m doing, and they’re behind me, cheering me on.” Mary Jo is ecstatic about Pam’s results. She says individuals who are interested in learning more about dancing should call 303.237.3733 or stop by the studio at 11153 S. Parker Road, Ste. S. She also attributes much of her studios’ success to her instructors. "What people probably enjoy most about my instructors is the energy that they bring and support that they offer in the lessons,” she says. “You hear people say ‘I'm older and thought I would feel out of place, but your instructors made me feel comfortable.’ My teachers are very, very good at making people feel comfortable and getting over the hurdles that are holding them back from doing something like this." Pam is definitely pleased she gave dancing a try. “I'm really hooked on it. I absolutely love it. I plan on going to the nationals in November.”

“Nursing homes today are not what they used to be,” says Phil, family consultant. “There are a lot of really good choices now for folks to live.” Article Susan Cormier

Photography Susan Cormier and Ted Veltrie

A

s Parker’s population has started to age, the entire South Denver metro area has seen a huge increase in retirement and senior care facilities. Gone are the days of just small, residential home options. Also gone are the days of lonely, depressing nursing homes where residents stay in their rooms with no activity. Many options exist for retirees these days – everything from independent and assisted living communities, to rehabilitation and skilled nursing care facilities, to memory and continuum care. The type of facility or community that is chosen depends on each individual situation. For example, a person recovering from a fall may need to spend a few days or a few months in a rehabilitation center, while a widow who wants to simplify her life would probably be more suited for an independent living community. Regardless of the accommodations, it appears most providers want to maintain or improve the quality of residents’ lives by keeping them active and interacting with others. That’s one of the main priorities at Brookside Inn in Castle Rock, one of Douglas County’s premier rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities. The 120-bed, family-owned facility provides contemporary care for its patients, says Rosette Subia, Brookside’s clinical liaison. “We try to keep residents engaged as if they were at home,” she says, explaining that activities include aerobics and taekwondo

us o r e m Nu e r a s e etire R r o f ons i t p O Care d n a sing u o H y Qualit classes, as well as movies, and visits from local politicians and even Tibetan Buddhist monks. "We hope that it makes them feel socially engaged, that there isn't that drastic of a change in their activity level from what they used to do,” Subia says. “They have access to the Internet. They have access to their cell phones. We are starting our Facebook page so they can talk with their families, Skype with their families…. That is the level of connection that we hope to bring. We want them to be involved and active in their own lives." Phil and Lily Hotaling of Answers for Senior Care, which provides assistance for families looking for housing alternatives, agree that the housing and care now available to seniors has changed dramatically. “Nursing homes today are not what they used to be,” says Phil, owner/family consultant. “There are a lot of really good choices now for folks to live.” In addition to long-term care and rehab facilities, such as Brookside Inn, there also are the independent and assisted living communities that have started showing up in the last few years, most notably the large MorningStar communities already open and under construction in Parker, Lone Tree and throughout the metro area. These communities are designed for those who don’t necessarily need daily assistance or medical care but who want to live on their own and receive services or attention when needed. They offer all sorts of amenities, activities and transportation. Some even have memory care options for people suffering from dementia. And, of course, there still are the small residential homes, which are a good option and provide meals, doctor visits and activities for a smaller population of maybe six to 10 residents, Phil and Lily say. For individual families looking at alternatives, key factors will be finances, the level of care that is needed and geography. “A lot of times people like to stay where they were living because it's familiar to them or close to their family," says Lily, a geriatric care manager. With all the available options, people should plan ahead and consider the fact that there are often waiting lists on the nicer, Medicaid-approved facilities. “You never want to make decisions like this at the last minute, feeling guilty and pressured. But there are good options,” Phil says. “There also are wait lists. If they haven't planned for that or don't know about that, it's a tough situation to be in for a family." Brand New Location and Atmosphere You’ll Want to Experience FuNuGyz Firsthand

ave you been to FuNuGyz in the past five months or so? If not, you will definitely want to experience the new FuNuGyz and its gastro pub and grill atmosphere. Although FuNuGyz has been in the Cottonwood area for the last 15 years, the restaurant moved into a new location in December 2014 after an extensive renovation of the building at 17904 Cottonwood Drive. "We moved into our new location and created a unique atmosphere for our customers," says Joe Oltmann, one of the four partners in the business. "We had a vision for FuNuGyz and decided to update every inch of our new restaurant. We are proud of what we accomplished because we did not cut corners and made a seri-

ous investment in renovating the entire place," creating a sports gastro pub and grill atmosphere. "We ripped out everything,” Oltmann says. “We added the bar tops and tables, which were made from reclaimed bowling alley lanes from Chicago. Our walls were decorated from wood that is 130 years old, which came from a barn in Steamboat Springs. “When you walk in to FuNuGyz, you feel like you are in downtown Denver. We are extremely proud of the ambience that our renovation has created with our customers.” With the new industrial-type feel, the owners – Oltmann, Tim Gibson, Andrew Malkoski and Gordon Beckstead - are hoping to entice all types of customers.

“Our concept is blue collar meets white collar meets no collar. Everyone is welcome, so it is kind of like an East Coast meets West Coast mentality, and the blend of people that we have as a result is truly amazing and rewarding. “When you visit FuNuGyz, you will notice our variety of customers because we have one table where somebody is drinking a $30 bottle of wine with our fruit and cheese plate, and one table over will be a family of five enjoying dinner. You will also see a group of friends sitting at the bar enjoying their favorite ice-cold beers and a couple of shots.” In addition to the fabulous décor, staff members will make sure you enjoy your dining experience with freshly-cooked dishes and friendly service every time you visit. "The concept behind FuNuGyz is simple. We wanted a place with great food and great service, plus a place where you feel like you can have an experience when you are in our establishment," Oltmann says. “Everyone is smiling at you and wants to take care of you. It seems like our team, the group of people that work here is having just as much fun as they want you to have. "Everything is made from fresh ingredients. Our wings are fresh. Our hummus is made to order. Nothing comes out of a frozen bag. In fact, most of our ingredients, including the beef and chicken, are purchased from local businesses. We are known for our wings, our green chili and our burgers, but we have quite a bit of other food that is sure to please even the pickiest eaters. We have everything from vegetarian meals to fruit plates."

Considering the fact that all the food is made fresh daily, the prices are reasonable. Menu items range from $7 to $18, with a half-pound hamburger running about $10. FuNuGyz also offers a full bar that includes local beer on tap, a huge outdoor patio, a couple of pool tables, dart boards and 29 TVs, which means you can enjoy every type of sporting event possible. "It's really a very inviting environment," says Oltmann.

Andrew Malkoski stands by three of the 29 TVs and walls made of 130-year-old wood.

Parker’s Senior Stroll An Excuse to Exercise Article Susan Cormier | Photography Provided

I

n recognition of National Senior Health and Fitness Day, older Parker residents are invited to participate in the sixth annual Senior Stroll on May 27 at O’Brien Park. The national fitness day is designed for older adults with the goal of promoting the importance of regular physical activity. To celebrate, more than 100,000 people will participate in local events at more than 1,000 locations nationwide, says Hillary Roemersberger, Parker’s fitness and wellness coordinator. In Parker, more than 100 individuals are expected to show up at O’Brien Park for the walk, which is just under 1 mile. There also is a half mile walk for those who don’t want to do the entire walk. Both walks are on surfaces that are fully paved and accessible. “We have a nice variety of people from across our community join us each year,” Roemersberger says. “We have many participants of our SilverSneakers™ program from the Recreation Center join us, as well as several people from the Parker Senior Center and other local groups across the community.”

After the walk, participants are given a healthy breakfast and the chance to visit with friends and win prizes from local sponsors, including T-shirts, water bottles and blood pressure checks. The event will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, at the park at 10795 Victorian Drive. Participants do not need to register. And while it is advertised for older adults, Roemersberger says anyone is welcome to join in the exercise, regardless of age. The walk is just one of the many ways that Parker Parks and Recreation looks out for seniors and their fitness. The Department also offers a variety of programs for active aging adults at its local facilities, including group fitness classes for ages 50+, Zumba Gold®, Tai Chi, aqua aerobics and pickle ball. Other offerings include Golden Yoga, which is held at the Parker Recreation Center and helps improve muscle tone, strengthen bones, improve balance and increase energy. Its complementary program is Golden Pilates, which is held at the Mainstreet Center and focuses on alignment, breath, core and strength. Some classes have a registration fee. All the information is available at ParkerRec.com or by contacting Roemersberger at 303.805.3278 or email hroemersberger@parkeronline.org.

Lady in the Fast Lane BMW 335xi M Sport GT Article and Photography Amy Smith

W

hen given the opportunity to drive a German-engineered, intelligently-designed and performance-oriented vehicle, always say yes. I recently had just such an opportunity with a fabulous 2015 3-Series model that some may not yet be familiar with. Whether you need a responsive crossover-style all-wheel-drive vehicle, a liftgate that offers hands-free access, an economical vehicle for commuting or as a mobile office, a roomy mom-or-dad-mobile for running the kids, friends, dogs, groceries or home improvement materials, you will find it in the BMW 335xi GT. With a limousine-like rear seating area, larger than the 5-Series sedan backseat, and one-touch fold-down rear seats revealing

a cavernous rear cargo space, this vehicle can handle most any daily demands. Plus, the power at your fingertips is substantial with the smooth-as-silk 3.0-liter twin power turbo 6-cylinder 300-horsepower engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. Drivetrain settings provide comfort, sport, sport plus and eco pro options, so you get to decide if you want to drive with fuel economy in mind or with an eye toward a responsive, track-worthy performance machine. The M Sport Package adds 18-inch wheels and all-season tires, a beautiful wood trim interior and headliner, sport seats, the iconic M steering wheel and exterior enhancements. The hands-free tailgate, engaged by kicking gently under the rear bumper below the BMW emblem,

opens the rear door when your hands are full. For Colorado drivers, the Cold Weather Package, with heated seats and steering wheel, is a fantastic option. A starting MSRP of $47,250 and affordable pricing on packages and options fits with the tradition of the BMW 3-Series having something to offer everyone, at every level. In addition, the brilliance of BMW designers shines through in such areas as programmable memory buttons, on which you can set anything from navigation destinations you use regularly to radio presets, allowing for control through the dash cluster. Most any other function you would access through the trademark BMW-pioneered iDrive control can be set on the memory buttons. The iDrive system itself provides multiple choices for navigating menu options, including actually writing navigation address components on the interactive dial with a fingertip. The 8-way programmable driver’s seat settings, iPhone and Android compatible paring and hands-free capability, 20-gig internal hard drive, a panoramic moon roof that spans the front and rear passenger areas, and rear climate controls have driver and passenger convenience in mind. This is truly one of the most comfortable vehicles I have ever driven, for which I thank our friends at Schomp BMW for the opportunity. Add to all this a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating and BMW Ultimate Service Maintenance Program, with zero cost regular maintenance on all factory-recommended services for the first four years of ownership. The car even triggers an email to be sent to you when services are due. The versatility and value of the BMW 335xi GT, with the added fun and function of the M Sport Package make a winning combination, keeping with the tradition and history of BMW. Amy Smith is a longtime auto enthusiast with a 20-year professional history in the automotive industry. She can be reached at amy@carconnections.us with any questions, comments or review requests.

As an ambitious young woman in love with a high-spirited New Yorker, Doreen Sternkopf pictured the happy life ahead: marriage, children, a home full of laughter and music. But the realities of motherhood rarely meet the expectations of the uninitiated. “Living so far away from family is hard,” explains Doreen. With her extended family in Zambia and her in-laws in New York, she dedicates her life to caring for her two young children in Parker. Ivwa, the eldest, is a gifted student. She excels at ballet, sings in the Young Voices of Colorado, plays chess, writes poetry and has a great many friends. Yande, the youngest, is a quiet soul. As a baby, he suffered frequent, debilitating seizures. After years of tests, treatments, surgeries and agonizing research, the seizures are under control, but Yande’s condition has never been identified. He cannot run, play or talk, and has limited control over his body. He has a feeding tube that attaches directly to his stomach, and a wheelchair. Yande smiles when listening to music and laughs at his sister talking in funny voices, revealing a sweet and happy personality. It is these small things that fill Doreen’s heart with joy. “The stress piles up, but I don’t worry,” she says softly. “At the end of each day, I submit to the Lord. Also, it helps to have an understanding husband.” Doreen turns as Ivwa clatters into the house, grabs her cycle helmet and darts out again. Yande relaxes peacefully on the couch. “I love motherhood! I wouldn’t want to do anything else.” Sheyna

On a sunny Memorial Day nine years ago, Sheyna and James Marshall, and their three small children, were waiting at a red light in their Oldsmobile. Little Makenna was 2 years old, Justin was 5 and big brother Christian was almost 7. Suddenly, a teenaged driver, racing his friend, lost control and violently smashed into the Oldsmobile, flipping both cars. As the Marshall family helplessly spun upside down in the road, another street-racing youth plowed into them. 34

Makenna suffered broken legs, and Justin was critically injured, with gasoline burns, a broken leg and a crushed skull, requiring numerous surgeries. He was in a coma for months. Sheyna's “beautiful boy,” Christian, was killed instantly. Sheyna helped Justin slowly learn to function with brain damage, a paralyzed left arm and an impaired leg. She nursed her daughter back to health and was blessed with another baby girl, Brooklyn. The military family was transferred from Washington, D.C. to San Antonio and on to Colorado Springs, where Sheyna continued to raise her three happy, resilient kids. In 2010, Sheyna put her immense courage, strength and fiercely protective instincts to good use, serving her community as a police officer in Fountain. She also volunteers with Drive Smart Colorado, educating high school students about the devastating consequences of speeding and distracted driving. She introduces Christian through videos and stories, so he can inspire the teens to drive responsibly. Two years ago, the American Mothers organization named Sheyna the Colorado Young Mother of the Year, in recognition of her dedication to saving lives. Her advice to new moms: “There will be some very good times and some very low times, but ultimately it’s a beautiful ride.” Police Officer Sheyna Marshall with her children (from left) Brooklyn, Makenna and Justin.
