Editor's Letter
Hello, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs. A
ttending a festive annual business luncheon recently in Atlanta, I was a polka dot in a sea of dark suits. I elbowed my way into conversations and met some of Dunwoody and Sandy Springs’ most faithful champions. The dynamic Ted Turner accepted the invitation of the equally dynamic Sam Massell and the two leaders exchanged quips for members and guests of the Buckhead Coalition. Atlanta’s former mayor shot questions about the career and character of media mogul-turned-environmentalist and we were all shamed into promising to pick up trash around our neighborhoods, as Turner does as he walks the blocks downtown where he lives when he is camping out in Atlanta. SM: You are a defender of environmental sustainability and the installation of solar
panels. Why do solar panels have to be so ugly? TT: I don’t think they are ugly at all. Soon, our parking lots and roofs will be covered with them. When I look at a solar panel, I sure don’t see fumes of disgusting exhaust billowing out from them.

We celebrated two years publishing this magazine, too. I pity the fool who says print journalism is dead. HIGH UNVEILS LOS TROMPOS The High will unveil the second large-scale, interactive design installation by contemporary Mexican designers Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena on the Woodruff Arts Center’s Carroll Slater Sifly Piazza. The site-specific work, titled “Los Trompos” (“The Spinning Tops”), continues a multi-year initiative to activate the outdoor space and engage visitors in a meaningful art experience upon entering the campus of the Woodruff Arts Center (of which the Museum is a partner). The installation builds on the success of 2014’s “Mi Casa, Your Casa” commission, for which Esrawe and Cadena dotted the piazza with three-dimensional open frames shaped like houses that invited visitor interaction. Originally planned as a two-year project, the Piazza activation program is extended for three more years with funding from a recent grant courtesy the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation. On view April 24 through November 29, 2015. High.org

Small Town Secrets SECRETS OF THE LADIES MISSION SOCIETY WRITTEN BY LAURIE ROTHROCK DICK | REVIEWED BY RHIANNON BANKES
S
et in the small, Southern town of Simpsonville, Alabama in the 1950s, Secrets Of The Ladies Mission Society, will appeal to lovers of The Help and Fried Green Tomatoes. When the town doctor, Lester Seabrook, passes away, many in the community mourn but none pay much attention to his grieving widow, Adie. The ladies in town have never invited her into their close circle despite the fact that she stood by their beloved doctor’s side as his nurse for decades, seeing them each through many joys and heartaches. As a poor farm girl, Adie snagged up one of the most eligible bachelors in their small town, and the ladies have never forgotten it. But when word gets out that Miss Adie is writing a book about the history of the town and its people, members of the local Ladies Mission Society begin clutching their pearls. Determined to find out what exactly Adie plans to include in her book, the ladies begin to descend on her home with their mostprized casseroles and cakes. Miss Adie’s caretaker, Eula, escorts each of the ladies to Miss Adie’s bedside and then fills their re-
frigerator with the guests’ offerings, (while the women try to peak in kitchen to see who has already visited based on their signature dishes.) Determined to keep their secrets safe, the ladies each assess Adie’s health and question whether she will expose their secrets as revenge for never being invited into the Ladies Mission Society. On a good day, Adie recognizes each woman and makes round-about acknowledgements regarding their pasts. On a bad day, she simply looks out the window at the barren land that was once her and Doc’s thriving garden. While each woman relives their darkest secrets, they come to their own realizations after their visits. They know that if not for the prospect of a published account of their buried secret, they never would not have faced their pasts and continued to carry their burdens alone. As each of the women’s stories of abuse, teen pregnancy, affairs, and suicide unravel, so does their perception of Adie, and in turn others in their close circle and community. They learn that they can change their own and the town’s future and unite in an effort to show Adie Doc’s love as well as respect Doc’s wishes for the future. This southern story touches on the darkest secrets in every community but focuses on the love and forgiveness that makes it thrive. Laurie Rothrock Dick is a former magazine editor, public relations/marketing manager, newspaper feature writer and copywriter. At various points in her career, she was the Editor-in-Chief of TV Guide, Southern Banker, a reporter for The Gwinnett Daily News, among other publications. Secrets Of The Ladies Mission Society is her first novel.

Maya Love REFLECTIONS OF SPAIN AND ITALY IN AN INTIMATE SETTING ARTICLE MALIKA BOWLING | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

aya Steaks & Seafood, opened recently in Sandy Springs, took the place of Seabass Kitchen. The restaurant is completely revamped with the bright blue tile replaced by reclaimed wood. The dark and cozy atmosphere lends itself to intimate date nights or catching up with a few close friends over a bottle of wine. You really can’t talk about Maya without mentioning the chef and owner behind the concept, Mimmo Alboumeh. He’s owner of Red Pepper Taqueria restaurants with several locations around the city, known for their locally sourced organic ingredients. However, he wanted to open a restaurant that reflected his time spent in both Spain and Italy. Named after his youngest daughter, Maya reveals the passion he has for his restaurants. Mimmo’s gregarious personality will make you fall in love with him. I dare you not to. There are two standouts on the starters: The Crispy Lobster Tail and Beef Carpaccio. A very light batter covers the perfectly succulent lobster. And the Aji remoulade with a slight spice and tanginess is the perfect dipper. Even if you’re planning on getting a steak, I’d urge you to try the Beef Carpaccio, sliced fresh daily. 16
PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | April 2015
If you love wine, that’s reason enough to visit Maya. Mimmo himself chooses the selections, and they offer more than 40 wines by the glass. A Tempranillo, suggested by our server, was light bodied and went well with seafood appetizers. A spicy Zinfandel was the perfect match for my ribeye. Steaks are the star of the menu with choices of filet, veal porterhouse, ribeye and NY strip supplied from Braveheart Black Angus Beef Purveyors. My ribeye was juicy and oh so f lavorful. Although there are over 10 “steak addictions” (toppings), I chose the simple, M’ sauce, not too overpowering with a slight kick. Seafood fans should not miss the Chilean Seabass bathed in a lobster cream sauce. Although I loved my comfy booth with a view of the entire restaurant, Mimmo’s favorite spot is the high top in the front of the restaurant that overlooks the kitchen. He calls it the Gangster booth. Maya Steaks is a lovely addition to the Sandy Springs neighborhood. Pop in soon and find out for yourself. Just don’t take the Gangster booth, I’m planning on being perched there for many a future visit.

ho says life doesn’t get better with age? I am here to tell you, they didn’t know what they were talking about. I am proud to announce that I am 66 years old...an official senior citizen, a baby boomer, and I am living my best life, right now, and from all indications, I expect it will only get better. I will share a sprinkling of the spices in my life...it was my 56th birthday when I would go on my first hike, ever. It was in the North Georgia mountains on the Blood Mountain trail, the highest point on the Appalachian Trail in the state of Georgia. The hike leader had the forethought not to tell me it was the most challenging hike the group trekked, until after the hike was over. I didn’t know it was supposed to be hard. I was enjoying the experience so much, I never realized how steep the trail was, nor do I remember the strenuousness of the trail. I was savoring one of the most exhilarating feelings that I had ever experienced. It was so invigorating to me, being out in nature, becoming one with my surroundings. I had awakened a passion for the outdoors that I didn’t know I possessed. A few years later, after many hikes, the hike leader could no longer lead the hikes due to his work schedule. Acknowledging my awakening, he asked me to take over the group. This urban city, 18

girly-girl took over the leadership...went on to become a certified outings leader through the Sierra Club, certified in Wilderness First Aid through the Wilderness Medical Institute of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), and a Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) through the National Association for Interpretation. After sharing my hiking experiences through my online newsletter, my first official hike as the group leader went from the usual 8 – 10 people to 30 hikers. There were men and women of all ages. One set of hikers stand out to me, they are a
family of three generations: mother, daughter and granddaughter, and the son-in-law joins us as well. Continuing on my quest, and having a desire to learn as much as I could about the environment and conservation, I became a community partner with REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.), and the Georgia Conservancy. I was able to expand my involvement. I participated in overnight camping, canoeing, service projects and other outdoor activities. Later, I started a Meetup group to bolster my outdoor activities. Now, I am an active participant in bicycle riding, kayaking, white water rafting, tree climbing, spelunking, zip lining, and more. For my 64th birthday, I led a group on an obstacle course at Treetop Quest at the Gwinnett Heritage Center, where I completed all nine levels of challenges. For my 65th birthday, a group joined me for a 5-day sailing experience
in Belize on a 46-foot catamaran. That same year, still celebrating my coming of age, I led a group to the Grand Canyon where among our adventures, we hiked the Bright Angel trail to more than 1,000 feet below the rim, which we were told, less than 10 percent of the 5 million annual visitors ever accomplish, and we were among the less that 1 percent of African Americans to do so…all of us were over age 50, with the oldest being a 75 year old great-grandmother. One of my groups, OPALs, the acronym for Older People with Active Lifestyles, was featured on the CNN AccentHealth Network, for the entire month of January 2015. I was selected by the Huffington Post/TODAY Show as one of their 50 Over 50 who reinvented themselves. Whoever says life doesn’t get better with age, needs to speak with me! ABOUT THE WRITER:

T
he Perimeter area has always faced the yin and yang of balancing growth with the environment, traffic, sustainability and creating pedestrian-friendly, green initiatives. But the good news is that as the area braces for another round of explosive growth, the determination on the part of business, government and civic organizations to respect the environment and create a welcoming spaces for workers, visitors and residents is as widespread as the construction. “The market is ramping up and we are working with all the employers and businesses in the area to again remind them or tell them about the opportunities to start utilizing the four MARTA stations, car pools, and we’re working to get GRETA to expand their bus routes,” says Yvonne Williams, president and CEO of the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCID). To further coordinate environmental issues in the area, the PCID will assume the transportation issues that were previously handled by the Perimeter Transportation & Sustainability Coalition. Over the past 15 years, the PCID has funded more than $146 million in area transportation, commuting, transit and alternative transportation improvements. “We have a lot of big construction coming in 2016, which means a lot of traffic and disruption,” says Williams. “But we are all working together to create [office] campuses with better connectivity to each other and MARTA. We are working on bike lanes and working on a lot of different options for both businesses and workers.”
20

In fact, the PCID was recently recognized for its ongoing efforts by the PED Golden Shoe Award, a regional advocacy group for pedestrians. They received the award for its pedestrian-friendly streetscape along Perimeter Summit, Parkway, Lake Hearn Drive and Parkside Place. Several large companies, such as Cox Communications, IHG and Hines, are leaders in the green and sustainability movements. Cox, in particular, focuses on reducing waste and energy consumption as well as conserving water. At its Perimeter-area headquarters, Cox has recycled more than 900 tons of materials since 2007 and its e-waste recycling program has diverted more than 1.8 million pounds of e-waste from landfills each year. Throughout the Perimeter area, recycling programs as well as overall conservation efforts are in full swing. Quiet outdoor areas are prevalent throughout the office parks and an increasing number boast electric charging stations for cars. Developers not only seek LEED Certification, but use it as a competitive advantage. Randall F. Holmes, a principal in Seven Oaks Co., whose projects include Perimeter Summit, the Hyatt Villa Christina Hotel, restaurant and conference center, says they are firmly behind the “green” movement. Perimeter Summit, not only includes the hotel but also 1.5 million square feet of Class A office space but 425 residential condominiums. Among Seven Oaks’ green initiatives is having LEED certifications on two buildings and a US Energy Star rating on three. In addition, 101 Summit Boulevard has a
spring water reclamation project. There also is an organic vegetable garden as well as a 23-acre conservation (no build) area and the company is investigating installing nature and fitness trails. In addition to these corporate efforts, much is happening as the area continues to “go green.”
SUSTAINABILITY AND THE ARTS WOODRUFF PERFORMS
In an effort to create a more sustainable arts campus, the Woodruff Arts Center created a Sustainability Team comprised of 12 members in July 2014. The goals of the Sustainability Team are to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions; recycle, reduce and reuse the “stuff” used daily during the work day; conserve water; mitigate the impact on the environment; and, educate employees and stakeholders regarding sustainability. The Sustainability Team successfully executed the following initiatives campus-wide: • Replaced more then 1,500 75-watt lamps with 12watt LED lamps; • Uses rain water from the High’s expansion roofs in a cistern that is used to irrigate the arts campus; • Replaced chillers and boilers in the energy plant with new energy-efficient units; and, • Implemented an aggressive recycling program.
Other area initiatives include: • Unclogging the roads. Funding has been approved to make improvements on the I-285/Ga. 400 interchange, which Gov. Nathan Deal calls “a project of statewide significance.” • Synchronizing traffic lights: The PCID recently received a grant for PTOP, a traffic signaling project that will make it easier to drive around the Perimeter without getting stuck at red lights. Three counties and two cities are working together to ensure the lights are in sync so that cars keep flowing. So far, only the traffic signals on Ashford Dunwoody and Perimeter Center West have been aligned, but there’s more to come. • Walking lanes: Sidewalks have been added or widened, benches and better lighting installed and flowering trees planted, all of which are designed to provide a beautiful environment for workers and visitors. • Controlling excessive speed: Two raised intersections will help control excessive speed along Lake Hearn Drive. As part of this pedestrian-friendly initiative, ramps, signs and crosswalks will be installed. • Save money, commute: The Georgia Commute Options offers incentives for using public transportation, but you can also save money by paying for some transportations expenses, such as transit passes and van pool fares using pre-taxed dollars. Qualifying bicycle commuting ex-penses are also included, such as repair and storage. How much can you save with this tax ben-efit program? How about 40 percent? Williams says that these, as well as many others, will benefit the entire Perimeter area. “We will have more people living — and working — in the area, which will also reduce traffic as people can walk to work, shops and restaurants. We are balancing growth with being environmentally responsible.”
Also, the High completed the installation of a GreenGrid® Green Roof System atop the Frances Bunzl Center, which serves as the administrative building for the Museum. The installation by Weston Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®) is the largest modular system installed to date in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The 6,680-square-foot vegetated green roof helps clean and reduce storm-water runoff, reduce the urban-heat-island effect, reduce energy consumption, extend the roof life and improve air quality. This particular green roof also has the ability to retain about 62,000 gallons of storm water per year. For the High’s modular system, vegetation and engineered growth media were pre-planted in lightweight modules made of 100 percent post-industrial recycled plastic. Low-growing vegeta-tion and hearty, drought-resistant plants such as Sedum ‘Murale,’ Sedum ‘ Weihenstephaner Gold,’ Sedum ‘Sexangular’ and Sedum ‘John Creech’ were then installed in four inches of soil. The modules were then placed on the administrative center’s roof. The plant leaves turn colors in the cold months of winter, and bloom in the spring. As a result of these efforts the Woodruff Arts Center was named a “Top Performer” in the Atlanta Better Building Challenge in 2014.

INSIDE Atlanta-Based Subscription Service, Bare Bliss Box, Features Organic, Vegan, Cruelty-Free, and Toxin-Free Beauty Products ARTICLE RHIANNON BANKES
I
n the booming beauty subscription services sector, there is a blue ribbon winner…or should we say green? Bare Bliss Box delivers 4-6 organic, vegan and non-toxic beauty samples plus a bonus organic lifestyle product right to your door every month. CEO and co-founder Shelli Price’s life-long interest in natural remedies progressed in 2006 when she became a vegetarian and really started reading food, beauty and skincare product labels. She learned that many beauty products are actually hazardous, and that after their immediate absorption into the skin and bloodstream through topical applications, they can cause multiple negative repercussions. Her label obsession intensified after she had her son in 2010. “My mom thought I was crazy because I wouldn’t let her rub baby oil on my newborn because it is petroleum based. I also forbid the use of products with talc and parabens, as they are known to cause cancer.” Price started making organic oils in her home after hours of research and turned her guest bedroom into an organic skincare laboratory. She then created a list of almost 500 brands that were making nontoxic beauty and skincare products. “I was amazed by how many companies were making radical changes and creating healthy skincare. That’s when I knew the demand was growing.” In 2012, the idea of Bare Bliss Box was born and in 2013, the company began offering monthly, 3-month or 6-month subscription boxes containing beauty and skincare products. Each month subscribers receive their surprise products, and after trying each item, they return to the site to shop the special deals. The interactive website also provides tips, guides, and articles to keep subscribers informed and up-to-date on the latest

conscious beauty trends. How many times have you purchased a beauty product only to find out that it irritates your skin, feels strange, or just doesn’t suit you? By allowing subscribers to sample several brands and then return to purchase on the site, Bare Bliss Box takes the risk out of investing in new beauty products. Plus, each month’s brands offer additional discounts or free items with your order. When deciding which brands to include in the boxes, Price emails select brands with her business concept to see if there is an interest. She has also had companies reach out to her by completing the brand application on the website. Bare Bliss Box is more than just a sampling service, the company also functions as an outlet for green beauty brands to promote their products to a targeted audience of health conscious and environmentally-friendly women across the nation. She has also found success with social media, as it has been a big influencer for attracting both subscribers and brand partners. The team at Bare Bliss Box hand selects and guarantees safe, nourishing products free of at least 20 different potentially harmful ingredients and held the company’s high standards. Some previous box inclusions were: La Mav BB cream, Naked Bar Soap Co. deodorant, Pure Natural Diva radical organic facial serum, Weleda pomegranate regenerating body lotion, The Coye Candle Co. luxury soy candles, Kosmatology solid lotion bar, and Adorn vegan nail paint. Price also has plans to introduce some of her own formulas into a Bliss Box box this year. Bare Bliss Box’s mission is to educate women on the dangers of toxic beauty products and introduce them to the wonders of a health conscious organic approach by providing safer and healthier beauty products that deliver pure bliss. Price believes that building an organic, vegan, and non-toxic beauty and skincare marketplace, shoppers will be able to buy amazing products from our featured vendors, making us a one-stop-shop for organic lifestyle needs. Due to high demand, Bare Bliss opens their list for subscriptions every month for a limited number of new subscribers. Join their email list or follow them on social media to know when the boxes go on sale. Once boxes sell out you’ll have to wait for the next sale date to purchase your box for the next month. So don’t delay and order your curated box packed with organic beauty products delivered right to your door or send a gift subscription to someone special. Shipping is free for all subscription orders shipped in the United States and as a special gift to Perimeter North Lifestyle readers, when you enter Buckhavenbliss in the promo code box, you will receive 20 percent off! For more information or to start your subscription visit BareBlissBox.com. You can also visit the company Facebook page or follow them on Twitter and Instagram: @BareBlissBox.

ith gas prices always fluctuating even when it occasionally works to our benefit, we still need to save as much money as possible by making fewer trips to the pump here in Atlanta. Well, here are two automobiles that kept consumers in mind who enjoy riding in style for extended distances due to their remarkable miles to the gallon.
2015 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI SE WITH CONNECTIVITY
Sleek, solid and fun to drive, this Jetta shines. Volkswagen continues to surge forward with their solid lines of automobiles they have been wowing drivers especially in the U.S. Their fun commercials boasting long drives without stopping at the pump prove to be legitimate claims thanks to the 2015 Jetta TDI. Using diesel fuel (minus the traditional loud engine noise many have grown accustomed to in the past), its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine provides a combined 36 miles to the gallon (31 city/45 highway). Add that to this sedan’s long list of amenities including numerous mind-easing safety features (Intelligent Crash Response System); heated front seats; Titan Black Leatherette interior; Premium VIII touchscreen; 16-inch alloy wheels; and connectivity featuring Bluetooth for a mere $24,896 makes the Jetta a steal. VW.com 2015 HYUNDAI SONATA LIMITED
A classy ride from an automaker that continues to impress. My, how times have changed. Once seen as a company for strictly the penny pincher, the Hyundai brand has flourished in the last five years thanks to their significant upgrades in mechanics, luxurious packages, generous warranties, and eye-popping styling to name a few. The Sonata Limited further solidifies this company’s growth. Drivers will enjoy the plush leather seats, LED taillights, hands-free trunk opener, Bluetooth connectivity, five-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, blindspot detection, and a 2.4 liter heart pushing out 185 horsepower while still maintaining an impressive combined 28 miles per gallon (24 city/35 highway). These, along with a lengthy roster of other standard features, justify this model’s Best-In-Class Total Interior Volume accolades for only $26,525. Add the highly recommended Tech Package featuring navigation, panoramic sunroof and Xenon lights ($3,500), and advanced safety features such as the Smart Cruise Control in the Ultimate Package ($1,550) and buyers will be in driving bliss for a very reasonable $32,510.
