Editor's Letter

Hello Sandy Springs, Greetings Dunwoody! W

MAY 2015 publisher

e are still reeling from celebrating two years publishing Perimeter North magazine. What a fabulous ride! We’ve met so many generous and entrepreneurial people, growing and evolving along the way. That’s what travel is about, right? I love a good trip. Last month, I flew to Portland, Oregon, to visit my sister and her twin girls. I’ve been lucky enough to make that trip nearly every year since they were born six years ago. That first year, I had just moved to Atlanta and was not sold on the idea. At all. Traveling makes the editor smile, especially But, you’ve grown on me, Atlanta, as you know. when it's with her adorable sister, Julie Sparling, hiking along the Columbia Gorge. Returning home, I now see what a diverse and hospitable place you are. I see a community where people work hard and live well. Local chefs continue to surprise me, our many museums open up my mind and a never-ending parade of non-profits accomplish impressive work to help others. Getting away makes me appreciate all of this even more. When I am in Portland, I am treated to a feast of local seafood (the salmon curry with pumpkin at Monsoon Thai Cuisine in Northeast is my go-to), a quirky and ever-changing bar scene (hundreds of bottles line the dark paneled walls at the rather pretentious but entertaining Multnomah Whiskey Library) and a plethora of shops offering up products carefully chosen from down the street and around the world (visit Canoe on SW Alder for a cool set of backyard bird calls or leather satchel). So much to see, do, drink, eat and explore, but, where is that Southern hospitality? The warm welcome Atlantans offer is genuine. Elsewhere, that is not so evident. Getting away has made coming home better. Enjoy this month’s travel issue full of gorgeous photography and tales of trips. Share a photo of your vacation on our Facebook page and show us where you’ve been! Happiest of Mother’s Day to all our Perimeter North mommies!

Around Town ATLANTA FALCONS PRESENT $30,000 TO NORTHSIDE

VAN MICHAEL BELIEVES

Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Dan Quinn, defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux and center Joe Hawley recently visited Northside Hospital to present the hospital’s Foundation with a $30,000 donation on behalf of the football team. The money will go to support cancer patients at Northside and to expand the programs and services available to help them beat their diagnosis. Northside is the preferred healthcare partner of the Atlanta Falcons. During the 2014 season, the Falcons donated funds to Northside for every sack made by the team and, additionally, for every reception made during the Oct. 12 Breast Cancer Awareness game, which was presented by Northside.

For the fourth consecutive year, Van Michael Salon and the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper have partnered for Aveda Earth Month to proudly raise funds and awareness for local water conservation throughout last month. All seven Van Michael locations hosted in-salon fundraising efforts again this year, resulting in a $15,000 donation through raffles and an Earth Month-themed Happy Hour Hair event at the new Midtown salon. With a donation at the event, attendees learned how to style their hair while still conserving water and enjoyed complimentary bites and drinks to toast to another successful Earth Month. The group of Aveda salons also contributed to the brand’s global mission to raise $6.5 million for clean water in 2015 by selling the Aveda Earth Month candle. The sale of one Earth Month Light The Way Candle ™provides clean drinking water to a person in Madagascar for an entire year.

On view through November 29, “Los Trompos” will create a destination outside the Museum where patrons can enjoy recreation, social interaction, performances, art-making activities and special events co-organized with local partner institutions. As part of its Friday Night Lates series during the run of “Los Trompos,” the High will present evening programs on the piazza on the first and third Friday of each month. Top Job HOW TO FIND THE BEST ROOFER FOR THE JOB ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS

A

tlanta is home to a wide range of weath er conditions. The city sees its share of regular thunderstorms in the spring and summer. In addition, Atlanta is not immune to freezing rain and ice storms seen by the Midwest and northeastern states during winter months. The weather shifts may result in damaged or detached shingles which can cause moisture to infiltrate your roof. Other factors play a role in roof damage as well. These issues can include the natural process of long term deterioration of materials, vents, and seals, the experts at KTM Roofing tell us. “Most general house-builders aren’t detail oriented like a professional roofer may be because builders have so many other elements they’re dealing with while building a house,” says Tim McLoughlin of KTM Roofing. Here’s why that’s a problem: improper installation of roof components like shingles, flashing, gutters, and gutter guards can actually cause immediate damage. Combine constant exposure to the elements, natural disintegration of materials over time with sloppy installation techniques, and you’ll have problems. Here, Tim dispels a few misconceptions of hiring a good roofer and offers up advice on getting the job done right. PNL: Is it true that if the Better Business Bureau does not have any complaints against the contractor, he must be qualified? TM: Checking with the BBB is a great place to start, but ask for customer testimonials, referrals from friends and neighbors and check Kudzu and other social media reviews. Be sure the references the roofer provides are for jobs completed within the past six months. Ask what percentage of business comes from referrals. PNL: Choosing the contractor who offers the lowest price saves you money. Is this true? TM: Not always! What’s being left out or what shortcuts have been made? Get the contractor to itemize the initial bid, so you’re not stuck with change orders. Be sure the quote includes ALL materials. It will help for you to develop a basic idea of what you want and need. When considering the scope of your project, create a prioritized list divided into three “wish/need” categories: Category 1 items must be part of the project at all costs, if the project is going to meet your needs. “Category 2” items should be included if the final design and/or budget permits. “Category 3” items would be extras, wishes, but not items necessary to complete the project. By making this list and sharing it with your contractor, you can give him a crystal clear idea of the scope of your project, so you’ll both be on the same page. 12

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | May 2015

PNL: If a person claims to have many years experience, they must to quality work. Is this the best testimonial to consider? TM: Take experience with a grain of salt, because 20 years can create a lot of bad habits. It’s more important to check the company’s credentials. Are they registered with the Georgia Secretary of State and for how long have they been in business? Look for stable roofing companies that have been around since before 2008 (when the market turned and many construction companies turned into “roofing” companies). In this state, there is no specific industry license for roofers. So, also do a corporation search on the web at SOS.Georgia.Gov. Be sure the contractor carries current comprehensive liability insurance specifically for roofing installation as well as coverage for workers’ compensation. You can call the roofer’s insurance company and check the company name on the insurance certificate is exactly the name shown on the roofer’s proposal and make sure it covers the company for roofers (not just the less expensive insurance issued for general contracting or other construction services). DO be honest with the contractor when discussing the price of the project. Your budget is very important piece of the entire project. Provide a realistic budget. DO confirm the contractor will pull all the required building permits. Many homeowners’ insurance policies require pulling a permit on any major home remodeling work to keep the home properly covered. Don’t let the contractor tell you that he needs YOU to get permits. This may be a warning sign they are not licensed (or worse, LAZY!). DO ask for a printed, transferrable certificate of warranty, explaining the workmanship after the project is completed. A typical warranty is for five years or longer. DO confirm the roofer is easy to reach. Get his cell number and check that it’s not an endless answering machine or unmanned office. DO think twice about companies who ask you to make a down payment. Generally payment is due upon invoice or completion of the project. Don’t pay for work that hasn’t been done. That’s a contractor who is confident in his work.

After living a privileged life (because if you get to grow up in the U.S. you are privileged), I decided it was time to go back to my roots and give back to those kids in the orphanage. Here I was, some 30-something years since my last visit, headed back to Mumbai, with my adoptive father and my brother. I don't care how much you read about it or see it on TV, nothing can prepare you for the striking contrast of beauty and chaos that you'll experience. India is the second most populated country in the world with 1.2 billion, compared to the U.S. with just 316 million. Quiet is hard to come by. Our journey started in Mumbai, but our experience was a bit more rustic than expected. Rather than stay at a beautiful hotel like the Oberoi, we stayed at The Cricket Club of India. Like a Country Club, but much more basic in décor and amenities, these are patronized by 16

India’s elite. As an outsider, it's a great study on the culture of the country. A fun evening out in Mumbai can be found at Cafe Zoe. Not only are there decent small plates, late night it turns into a clubbier feel but still fun that groups can hang about and sip on good cocktails. Want to experience street food without the "street" part? Seriously, DO NOT eat from a street vendor in India. Go to Tewari Brothers. These small chains can be found in several Mumbai locations. Samosas and a variety of other chaats and delicious desserts can be found here. This is authentic Indian food at its best. But I wasn't there to wine and dine. I was there to help raise money for an orphanage under my foundation. We made the short journey to Bandra where our orphanage is located. Unlike the sad faces of street children, here the children are grinning from ear to ear happy to be sponsored for clothing, shelter and an education from the time they are taken in until they graduate college. If you think traffic is bad in Atlanta, imagine it 10 times worse than rush hour, all the

time. Unlike Atlanta, cars and mopeds weave in and around one another amidst the constant symphony of honking horns. In what seems like sheer chaos, somehow all seem to navigate this balancing act, especially the families of four (including babies) who get around on their tiny mopeds. What would a visit to India be without a visit to the Taj Mahal? The beautiful jewel encrusted structure is certainly a sight to behold. Be careful traveling there. Somehow I ended up on a local train (certainly not meant for foreigners). The locals regarded me with looks of both disgust and intrigue at the same time, as I dared to bare my arms and was not sporting a sari (traditional Indian dress). As afternoon turned to evening, the possibility of reaching our hotel seemed to dwindle and fear of safety rose. A crowd of pushy taxi drivers surrounded us as we descended the train, not knowing who was legitimate or out to do us harm, I've never prayed so hard to make a journey to a hotel as much as I did on that journey. A three-star hotel, the Mumtaz was more like a two star, but it was heaven to me with a

Though India is a country of gorgeous temples and verdant colors, you won't escape the poverty. As opposed to the U.S., the "hut people" or homeless are intermingled with the elite. With 40 percent of the country living in poverty, maybe it's not something that should be unseen on a visit to India.

candinavia has the reputation for the beauty of its countries, and rightly so. Sweden, one of the triad that comprises Scandinavia, is a gorgeous country. Its capital, Stockholm, has been in the spotlight recently, receiving several accolades including being recognized as one of the most connected cities in the world, and one of the five fastest growing European cities. Not hard to see why! It isn’t just the natural beauty of perfectly white clouds in a pristine blue sky and spotless blue oceans that strike the eye, but also the architecture and design that is so modern, clean and stylish. Stockholm offers the avid traveler every opportunity to get acquainted with the city. A boat tour is a good option to hear the city’s history while enjoying the waters of Lake Malaren and the Baltic Sea. The National Museum affords a closer look at the country as does the Vasa Museum, which houses the glorious Vasa battleship, the pride of the Swedish imperial fleet. It sank on its maiden voyage so 95 percent of the ship was salvaged and is now at this location for the public to view. Opera Kallaren is great for a night out or even the National Theater. The King’s Palace is located on Gamla Stan, the old town, and you can view several personal belongings of the royal family as well as the changing of the guard daily. The palace is large, proof of the imperial living of the kings and queens of yore, so give yourself ample time to soak in the space. Gamla Stan itself is like a living museum. You can enjoy local food, shopping and views of the river as you walk along. The Skansen open air museum on the island of Djurgarden is a huge draw for families. The oldest open air museum in the world, it is a large park with attractions from replicas of homes to a zoo to live performances. White monkeys, lemurs, meerkats, lynx, brown bears, moose, reindeer, wolverine, wolves, fox – the children will have a gala time. Junibacken is another venue children will love – it is a museum devoted to Swedish children’s literature and especially Astrid Lindgren, the creator of Pippi Longstocking. Looking to add some Scandinavian style to your wardrobe? Ostermalm is where you should head. This is where the chic trendy labels and posh shops are

located. Art, design, fashion rub shoulders here. Top European brands have outlets in this area so enjoy some retail therapy while you visit. Hotel options are plenty but the Hotel Anno 1647 has that European touch to it which you might want to experience, especially if you are used to chain hotels. A stone pathway leads to the entrance and a swirling staircase gets you to your room. The location is fantastic – the hotel sits in busy Slussen on Sodermalm, right next to many restaurants and the Stockholm Museum as well as Erik’s Gondolen – a Stockholm landmark and award winning restaurant with romantic views of the harbor. Also Gamla Stan, the old town, is just minutes away. What to eat? Swedes enjoy what they call Fika – coffee and pastry, and no matter where you turn you will find a vendor selling just that. Many places sell the combo for just 5 Euros, a worthy snack when you are out and about. Small and light sandwiches are also quite common - you will see the locals walking around eating those. For a more authentic dinner experience, Aifur Krog and Bar is highly recommended. Located in a little alleyway type setting in Gamla Stan, it might not look very promising from the outside but dare enter in and you will be transported to a different day. The interiors are decorated to resemble an old Viking castle with throws and furs everywhere. Dining is at a communal table with wide chairs and benches. Local delicacies such as mead (sweet wine) and lingonberries are served here. The Baltic salmon and the meat stew are fantastic. For the palate-adventurous, the meat tray featuring reindeer, deer, moose and other favored local meats might suffice. The practicalities – Travel to Stockholm is easy, they are a well-connected country with multiple flights from main airports around the world. In Stockholm itself, moving around isn’t too difficult. Public transportation abounds, walking and biking are encouraged, and cars can be resorted to but where’s the charm there! Waterways are well used, if that’s to your liking. Everyone speaks English so don’t hesitate asking for directions. Credit cards and USD accepted everywhere. The hop-on hop-off buses are convenient for getting yourself around the main attraction areas. The Stockholm card gives you a discounted rate to all attractions and easy access so consider that for your next visit to Stockholm.

orget Mardi Gras (although that is synonymous with New Orleans)... Did you know that the city has an event unfolding any week or weekend through the year? And you thought the only time you could visit was carnival! In Nola, you can truly pick your passion. Whether its culture or history, architecture or design, nature or cuisine…New Orleans has something for everyone. Never a dull moment here. Places to visit are many but Jackson Square is a good starting point being New Orleans' most famous landmark. The square is flanked by historic structures such as the St. Louis Cathedral - The Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis King of France is the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the United States, the Presbytere – which gives you a history on the long and short of the Mardi Gras while also providing insight into the devastation caused by hurricanes, the Cabildo - the flagship building of The Louisiana State Museums and the one place to get your fill of local history, and the Pontalba Apartments, a.k.a the 1850s House - the oldest apartment buildings in the U.S. Where to stay? Check out the New Orleans Hotel Collection – exceptionally upscale hotels that offer distinctive style and personal 22

service. The Hotel Le Marais - a chic French Quarter boutique hotel conveniently located on Conti St. is one. Turn round the corner and you are smack in the middle of the famed Bourbon St. Two streets away and you are ready for your stroll along the Mississippi River and all the action on the main street. Their Vive! Bar is perfectly trendy for your evening drink, especially the outdoor courtyard with the pool and oversized futons. Très chic! The original settlement of New Orleans and the oldest neighborhood in the city, the French Quarter (Vieux Carre or simply The Quarter), was established by the French in 1718 but you can see the international influence and cultural contributions from the Spanish,

Sicilians, Italians, Africans, Irish and others. Notice the stunning architecture throughout the neighborhood. Balconies decorated with exquisite ironwork, courtyards brimming with lush greenery and beautiful fountains scattered along the street showcase the French Quarter's European roots. The Spanish are to be credited with the majority of the architectural design here. Many buildings have ceramic plaques informing visitors of street names during Spanish rule. The National WWII Museum is a historical gem that transports you to a time when victory hung in the balance. Guaranteed to move and educate, it features a 4D cinematic experience, interactive exhibits, soaring aircraft, personal histories – make sure you allot sufficient time, this attraction will absorb you. Mardi Gras World by the port and convention center might pique your interest – a tour will educate you on everything that goes on behind planning the annual grand event that celebrates everything symbolizing the New Orleans lifestyle. If off the beaten path festivals are on your radar, then the annual Fringe Festival is your best bet to take on artistic experiences by local and national theater groups. If you are a nature lover, then get swampy! On your tour aboard a Cajun Encounters flat-water boat, you will get to see alligators, raccoons, turtles, birds and your tour guide will share many tales of local lore. Another water-based activity is the Steamboat Natchez. This is the last authentic steamboat on the river and celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. It offers a jazz brunch during which you may check out the boat while enjoying informative narration about Ca the city. This is a favorite for celebrations fe d uM onde of any kind so book in advance for your tables on the steamboat. The Court of Two Sisters on Royal St. has a not-to-bemissed jazz brunch that should be a quintessential part of any trip to Nola. Get there hungry or you may not do justice to the vast hot and cold supper spread. Marti’s on Dumaine St. is an elegant and relaxed Parisian-style bistro with historic ties. Watch out for the two restored murals in the restaurant – a true revival of a Nola classic. Of course, you have to visit the famed Café du Monde for coffee and beignets. Their location on Decatur Street/French Market is the busiest, the original and open 24/7 so wait in line for your turn. Crowds guaranteed but that’s part of the experience. Consider the French Market for souvenir shopping as well as little specialty boutiques. If you are traveling with children then the Audubon Insectarium is worth the visit as is the Zoo, and Aquarium along River Walk. Plus, many cruise liners treat Nola as their port of call so you might want to do a little vacationing here before or after your cruising.

S

traight to the point, the all-new 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS400 is a gorgeous piece of art. Set off with the automaker’s signature designo® Cardinal Red, this coupe’s Diamond Radiator Grille, 19-inch twin five-spoke wheels, power folding mirrors, multi-beam LED headlamps with active curve illumination (they automatically adjust at turns), and sleek body frame further solidify its refined classification as luxurious. Interior décor flaunts plush black semi-aniline leather (to help maintain the hide’s natural sheen), “Black Ash” wood trim, and dash showcasing the navigation, and what we really appreciated—the surround view camera system. And actually driving it? Due to the 3.0 liter V-6 Biturbo engine roaring with 329 horsepower and 7-speed automatic transmission complemented by shift paddles; active parking assist; Distrotronic Plus with steering assist; and active multicontour driver’s seat which actually embraces you during cornering, even a quick errand to the market will be a pleasure. Oddly—in a good way—with all its power, the CLS400’s combined 24 miles to the gallon becomes even more pocket friendly with the ECO Start/Stop option which temporarily shuts the car off during extended idling to conserve fuel. Starting at a modest $65,990 with Bluetooth and numerous safety features included (adaptive brake technology), the optional Harman Kardon sound system with Dolby 5.1 ($1,610); Premium Package ($6,900); Parking Assist Package ($1,290); and Driver Assistance

Parting Thoughts

A Family That Travels Together WORDS ROBIN CONTE

M

y husband and I had the wanderlust before we met. He had lived and studied in Zurich, Switzerland, after college; I had lived and studied in Venice, Italy, during college. We each took the opportunity while in Europe to travel the Old World. He learned German, I learned Italian, and we traveled, getting around the continent bilingually, with scraps of French or Spanish thrown in every so often. We stayed in youth hostels and traveled by rail. We learned the cost and time-saving benefits of popping down the cabin seats to form a makeshift bed and waking up the next morning in a new country. We understood the Thomas Cook timetable so well that we could jump off a train on one platform and catch a train on another in seconds before its departure. We were able to recognize nuanced changes in architecture and landscape as the scenery rushed by outside the train windows. We slept in dorm style rooms and bunked next to people from every continent. Through our experiences, we developed confidence, perspective and flexibility. Travel changed us, and we let it.

We met, joined forces and traveled together. We spent our honeymoon on a two-week trip through the Canadian Rockies. We canoed and camped in the Okefenokee Swamp; we took a 10-day rafting trip on the wild Tatshenshini River in Canada and Alaska. We went to the Caribbean for scuba diving and to the mountains for backpacking. Then we had kids. But that didn’t stop us. Have kids? Will travel. We plopped our first-born into a baby backpack and took him with us to the Cayman Islands, Tortola and Great Britain before he was a year old. I have a “places I have nursed” section in our photo album. The second child didn’t slow us down much, either; we could work with a 1:1 ratio. With the birth of twins, however, the number of offspring grew exponentially, and our style was under the threat of being cramped. So we busted out of the box: we packed up our whole crew and moved to Europe. We lived, worked and went to school in Munich, and we traveled the continent by planes, trains and minivans. Our children joined us in navigating transit stations, deciphering schedules and translating. They learned to pull their own weight (literally), all of them toting their own backpacks and rolling suitcases. They became comfortable in new environments and became independent travelers in their own right. Then they grew and went even further afield, always making an effort to learn the language, appreciate the culture, and respect the people of their host country. One studied in Lebanon and Russia, navigating the souk in Byblos and the bridges of St. Petersburg. One lived and studied in Chile, taking university courses in Spanish. The younger two are becoming proficient in languages, in anticipation of their own future travels. Our children have developed perspective, grown in confidence and learned flexibility. Because travel changes you, if you let it.
