We have hundreds of locally owned businesses, dozens of creative neighborhood initiatives and a gaggle of hard-working teachers and community leaders. The number of medical professionals, health and wellness providers and beauty salons is impressive. Fabulous restaurants and inventive bartenders keep us all entertained and well fed. There is no shortage of boutiques in our zip codes. Still, we have our favorites. I hope you will discover a few new haunts in our A-Z Guide this month and, as always, I encourage you to send your favorites to me to highlight in an upcoming issue. It’s a tough job keeping up with you. It really is. I need your help! In the meantime, enjoy this issue and keep it close by. 5K FOR GOCA September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance is working hard across the state to highlight the cause, honor those battling the disease and educate women about the risks and symptoms leading to early detection. Two Teal Trot 5k are set at Fort Yargo State Park on September 20 and Alpharetta’s Sanctuary Park on September 27. “Ovarian cancer is an under-recognized threat to women’s health,” says Doug Barron, executive director of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance. “One out of 72 women is affected, and the majority of cases aren’t detected until late stage due to evasive symptoms and a lack of reliable screening tools, making it the deadliest of gynecologic cancers.” GAOvarianCancer.org. 404.255.1337

The 3rd annual Stand Up for Stand Down toiletry drive for Georgia’s homeless Veterans, sponsored by the metro area Pilot International Clubs, Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS) and Northside Hospital, will take place through Sept. 5. The drive collects a variety of much-needed toiletry and personal care items to fill “comfort bags” for Veterans who attend the Atlanta VA Medical Center’s annual “Stand Down” event in October. “Stand Down” is a military term that refers to the time when troops are brought back from the battlefield for rest and recuperation. The Atlanta VA Stand Down event provides health and other services to help homeless Veterans get back on their feet. More than 650 homeless Veterans were served at the 2013 event. Donations can be restricted to a particular department, directed to our Annual Campaign, or submitted as a general donation to cover operating expenses. Also, Spruill is sprucing up their atrium! Riverwood Pride Four Riverwood High School students attended the Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) during the summer: Garon Berenson (Technology), Max Kantor (Theatre), Callaway Powlus (Music) , and Pascal Acree (Biology). After a rigorous audition and interview process, these students were selected to participate in the four-week program at Valdosta State University. GHP is a residential summer program for approximately 700 intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school juniors and seniors from across the state. Students spent their mornings in their major area of nomination exploring topics not usually found in the regular high school classroom. During the afternoons, students choose one of the other twenty areas in which to study. Evenings are filled with seminars, activities, concerts, and performances. Now in its 51st year, GHP is fully funded by the Georgia General Assembly.

Members of Dunwoody Brownie Troop #12555 delivering some of the food from their food drive for CAC in 2014.

Kids Give and Learn at CAC Article Kristen Ristino | Photography Provided

W

hen the girls of Brownie Troop #12555 from Dunwoody set out to earn their Philanthropist Badge, troop leader Paige Meier knew just where the girls could help. They set out to hold a food drive for the Community Assistance Center (CAC) and in return learned about how their donation helps families and individuals in our community. The girls made flyers for their food drive and distributed them in their neighborhoods. They delivered their food collection to CAC one afternoon, then toured the food pantry and the entire center which helps neighbors in need who live in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. With the support of donations from kids and adults alike, CAC helps prevent homelessness and hunger locally. The nonprofit center in Sandy Springs helps neighbors experiencing unexpected financial crisis with emergency financial assistance for rent or utilities and provides the basic necessities of food and clothing. CAC receives an average of 400 calls a month for assistance and the Food Pantry receives an average of 1,200 visits a month. Overall CAC touches about 6,000 lives a year. CAC also works with people to improve their situation and become stable once again; with money management classes, referrals for other services, and adult education classes to learn new job and life skills such as computer classes and English for Successful Living. Kids of all ages and from a variety of organizations in the community contribute to CAC each year. Among a few are Mt. Vernon Presbyterian School students who volunteer in groups at CAC 12

and hold food drives, Davis Academy students hold toiletry drives and assemble toiletry bags for CAC each fall, and North Springs High School students hold clothing drives to donate to CAC. There are plenty of opportunities for group of kids or adults to get involved with CAC. Groups from congregations, schools, businesses and civic organization such as scouts, garden clubs and neighborhood associations are encouraged to undertake a charitable activity to support CAC and help their neighbors in need. CAC is always in need of food, clothing and toiletries. Drives for clothes, jeans, shoes and sneakers and school supplies are a popular drives for groups. CAC also seeks group drives for jackets, coats and blankets for the winter months. The most needed items at CAC in the autumn are food, kids’ clothes for school, jeans and colder weather clothes and shoes. Donors are only one piece of the puzzle. More than 300 volunteers keep the center operating five days and week and two Saturdays a month. They work in all areas of the center, from client interviewing to behind the scenes. A small staff and a volunteer board of directors representing businesses large and small, supporting congregations, and the community manage a top-notch ship at CAC that earns public and private grants to help support services. To get your group involved with a donation project or volunteering please contact Debbie Olson at volunteer@ourcac.org. For more information on CAC please visit OurCAC.org.

Artist’s Palette

Meet Paul Light BHL: What brought you to our community? PL: I was born at Georgia Baptist Hospital in 1966. I grew up on Carter Drive in Brookhaven and then lived in the area just north of there (across from the YMCA soccer fields) until the early 90s. Then I lived in Sandy Springs for many years. My wife and I now live in Peachtree Hills. Before becoming a full-time artist I spent a total of 24 years working in our family business on Piedmont Road in Buckhead. BHL: Describe your art: PL: I am primarily a painter. I usually work in oils but I also enjoy experimenting with different types of paints. I also have made some large (human-size) minimalist metal sculptures painted with automotive paint but I don’t have access to a welding shop at this time. My aesthetic is best described as being connected to 20th century American Abstract Expressionism and Colorfield. Most of my paintings have a very high degree of energy and I alternate between diverse and monochrome color palettes. Conceptually speaking, my art is a reflection of my cumulative life experience and how I remember different elements of it -- not in pictures or narrative but in fleeting feelings and ways in which I cannot describe in words. This isn’t to say that it is positive or negative or that I am working through something using art therapeutically. That’s not it at all. Its simply an expression of my own existence and possibly the universe around us in the way that I relate to it at a basic level. Ultimately it is my intent that others can connect with my work on their own terms,- and then a the context for a conversation opens up. It can be a verbal conversation or a silent reflection, an internal solioquy in which viewers discover some forgotten thread of their life or discovers a new paradigm for themselves. BHL: What inspires you? PL: I am inspired by the universes around us, the people I meet, the stories I hear, and the art that I come across all the time. I also get 14

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | September 2014

inspired by teaching and collaborating with other artists, particularly those who make different types of art than I do. During those times, especially during teaching, there is a natural dialog about like-minded artists from history, which can be particularly energizing and informative. Another major source of inspiration is my gallery, (Further Polycontemporary) where I show many different types of art, even things that I don’t personally like. Much of it is Graduate Thesis exhibitions and group student shows but I also show the work of established artists. Further is a very polished and traditional gallery space in every sense of the word. My show schedule is, however, quite unconventional. A typical show at Further is only a week long with at least one reception, sometimes more. A typical gallery will leave a show up for months at a time. The idea here is that since people have access to a vast amount of instant-on information that they digest and move on relatively quickly that the gallery should present a schedule that works the same way. It is very difficult during the high season to have a new show every week but it is very rewarding. What shows up in the space is always interesting and the space gets totally recontextualized every time. Since the gallery isn’t pushing a particular aesthetic except a conceptual one wherein the community’s relationship with the arts is enriched, the outcome is always unpredictable which is, quite frankly delightful. Although I genuinely love many types of art I resonate most clearly and completely with the visual language of American Abstract Expressionism. I never get tired of looking at that type of work and am always finding new things in it. BHL: Where did you study art? PL: I have always made art. Drawing, painting, jewelry design, etc... In my old career I fueled my creative side by doing press ready advertising layout, copy writing and product design. I then got a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2D animation at The Art Institute of Atlanta followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at SCAD Atlanta. BHL: Where can people view your art? PL: People can view my art at Mason Murer Fine Art in Atlanta and in my studio at TULA (The MOCA / TULA Art Complex) 75 Bennett Street. My gallery is across the hall from my studio. When I have a dry spell in the gallery I put my own paintings up in there. I also have three paintings at Besharet Fine Art in Castleberry. BHL: When is your next show? PL: I have a painting in the exhibition, Suite Works at the Museum of Contemporary Art, GA until September 13. BHL: Tell us about your family here in Atlanta. PL: My parents came to Atlanta in 1961. They are originally from West Virginia but lived for a few years in Manhattan before relocating to Atlanta. We lost my mom to cancer in 2011. She was also a painter and forever a student of the arts. My dad is retired and lives in Sandy Springs. I live with my wife, Mary Catherine, and our son (Declan 1.5 years old) in an old house in Peachtree Hills. Mary Catherine is a stay-at-home mom for now.

Have you noticed how generous and philanthropic people are in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody? When we set out to publish this magazine, we knew we wanted to highlight non-profits and the good work being done by our neighbors. Year after year we see money being raised for education, health research and families in need. The work by the Community Assistance Center in Sandy Springs benefits hundreds of families. The Dunwoody Woman’s Club has served the community more than 40 years. Check out their annual home Tour Oct 1. DunwoodyWomansClub.org. Volunteers at the Dunwoody Nature Center work to preserve the pristine and his-toric acreage, serving more than 10,000 in the community. DunwoodyNature.org And, of course, we applaud the ongoing work at Pebbletossers, helping kids learn about service and how one act of kindness creates a far-reaching ripple of aid. Pebbletossers.com

OK, we know it’s a stretch, but we wanted to tip our hats to the fine people and organizations preserving, protect and inspire our community’s history. Heritage Sandy Springs is a nonprofit organization that maintains the lovely Heritage Green and museum, plans enrichment and history re-enactments and even organizes our Farmers Market (at the corner of Sandy Springs Cir. and Johnson Ferry through November). Join their efforts and learn about your home turf. HeritageSandySprings.org

That’s the state of mind our editor has every month when she holds the newest copy of Perimeter North Lifestyle. Our writers, photographers and contributors are special and talented members of our community who make each issue meaningful. We hope you keep this issue (and every issue) on your coffee table and let us know how we can feature YOUR favorite places and people. Thank you for making this magazine a success!

New Hospitality and Culture in America’s Oldest City St. Augustine, FL Article and Photography Ruksana Hussain

F

lorida has always been a favorite getaway destination for Atlantans, and St. Augustine should surely be on top of that list. A half day’s drive will find you in America’s oldest city, celebrating its 450th birthday next year. If you decide to stay at the St. Francis Inn, you will be sleeping in the oldest inn in the oldest city. This charming little bed and breakfast has history that dates back to the 1700s. The rooms are delightfully cozy, retaining their old world charm yet providing every comfort you can imagine. Breakfasts, refreshments throughout the day, a happy hour in the evening and nightly desserts are offered from Chef Janice Leary. Owners Joe and Margaret Finnegan have done a fantastic job of maintaining the inn that is on the National Register of Historic Places and providing an oasis of comfort in true Floridian style. St. Augustine is a great destination, whether you are a history geek or nature lover, party person or foodie. You can relax and enjoy the beach, or head out to discover and explore. St. Augustine is pedestrian friendly, especially in the historic district where most monuments and museums are located. Those alone can take you a day or more depending on how much local history and culture you want to absorb. The city was, after all, the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement and port in the continental United States and still serves as the headquarters for the Florida National Guard. Be sure to visit the Castillo de San Marcos, Lighthouse, Flagler College, Lightner Museum, Cathedral Basilica and County Jail – all notable characters in the city’s long history.

Mental Mastery of Chemotherapy: A Guide to Meditation and Positive Mental Imagery Written by David R. Nethero Reviewed by Rhiannon Bankes

T

he three scariest words anyone can hear: You have cancer. When Brookhaven entrepreneur David Nethero heard those words in December of 2012, he made a conscious decision to proactively fight the disease with a plan: a plan that helped him to quit smoking a few years earlier. After receiving the news that he had Stage 3B adenocarcinoma cancer of the colon, David drew on his previous experience and practice of using the power of the mind by incorporating the positive mental imagery that he employed when he quit smoking. A self-professed “ordinary guy” or “layman” when it came to meditation, David worked with Dr. George Pratt on exercising the power of positive mental imagery during his six month journey through chemotherapy. He believes these techniques significantly reduced chemotherapy’s effect on him and allowed him to maintain an active and engaged life with minimal side effects. Today, he is cancer-free. After completing his chemotherapy, David wrote a book to assist others with their chemotherapy experience. Equal parts lesssons and workbook, Mental Mastery Of Chemotherapy, alternates between short chapters full of advice and pages of questions aimed to guide a patient through their own journey. This book assists by teaching patients how to harness a positive state of mind in order to impact the physical state of being and chapters range from inspirational (Value of Friendships) to realistic (Celebrate the Good Times, Sleep Off the Bad) to honest (Hitting the Wall in Session Nine.) The book also includes a part of David’s personal journal as well as provides a template for patients to use themselves. He felt his journal gave him a sense of control over his reactions and allowed him to share details with his doctor. By breaking his experience into manageable pieces he felt more control and was able to predict many factors such as his nausea and fatigue for each day throughout his cycle. By recording these results he was able to better communicate details to his doctor. He also provides examples of his dialogue with his doctor enabling a patient to prepare themselves for optimum communication. This book is a great resource for anyone going through the chemotherapy process and the techniques outlined could be referenced for other medical treatments as well. The author has

22

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | September 2014

gone on to incorporate these techniques in the boardroom and on the tennis courts. If you or anyone you know is currently battling cancer, Mental Mastery Of Chemotherapy is a great tool to assist on the journey. David, and his wife Susan, have lived in Brookhaven for over four years, and in greater Atlanta for more than 20 years. Susan and David are the founders of Intimacy, which had its origin in Buckhead’s Phipps Plaza. Today, Intimacy has grown to 16 locations coast to coast and has become known as the premier bra fit expert and lingerie fashion retailer. David currently serves as managing director of Golden Seeds, an angel investment firm focused on women-founded and managed start up companies.

Just for Men Article Sue G. Collins | Photography Provided

I

t’s estimated that nearly 6,700 men in Georgia will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, according to the National Cancer Institute. It remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men, aside from skin cancer. One in seven will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime but more than 2 million men in the US count themselves as survivors, according to the American Cancer Society which explains that the prostate is a gland found only in males. It is located in front of the rectum and below the urinary bladder. The size of the prostate varies with age. In younger men, it is about the size of a walnut, but it can be much larger in older men. The prostate's job is to make some of the fluid that protects and nourishes sperm cells in semen, making the semen more liquid. Just behind the prostate are glands called seminal vesicles that make most of the fluid for semen. The urethra, which is the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body through the penis, goes through the center of the prostate. To help raise awareness of the disease, Northside Hospital’s Cancer Institute is offering a free prostate cancer screening to the community.

Appointments are required. Call 404.845.5555 and press “0.” Register early, as spaces will fill quickly. Northside Hospital treats more cases of prostate cancer than any other Georgia hospital and leads the way in groundbreaking procedures for better outcomes and less invasive treatments for the disease. The free screenings will check adult men for symptoms of prostate cancer and offer prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests and rectal exams at no charge. Uninsured men, ages 40-75, who have never been diagnosed with prostate cancer and haven’t had a prostate exam within the past year, are eligible to participate. Men are encouraged to talk with their health care providers about the benefits and potential risks of prostate cancer testing to determine if screening for prostate cancer is right for them. A limited number of appointments are available for men with insurance. A nurse navigator will be available to help arrange follow up care, if indicated.

The free screening will take place:

Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, 6-8 p.m. Northside Hospital-Atlanta Cancer Center 1000 Johnson Ferry Road Free parking available. 24

2014 Range Rover Evoque

The Evoque is an early candidate for automobile of the year Article Dennis Malcolm Byron | Photography Courtesy of Land Rover

W

hen Land Rover announced they were launching a compact luxury crossover SUV version of their prized Range Rover, intrigued minds set the Internet ablaze to get a sneak peek of what was in store. The gorgeous design of the Evoque did not disappoint and neither did the numerous amenities the new 2014 edition provided for a mere $41,100. As expected, the five-door standard version—there is also a three-door trim—left little to be desired thanks to the generous inclusion of a 2.0-liter, 240-horsepower aluminum turbocharged, four-cylindered heart, complete with 9-speed automatic transmission; paddleshifters; seemingly countless braking features (ABS, HDC, DSC, HDS, EBA, TSA, HAS); respectable 24 combined gas mileage; and superior suspension to maintain the luster of Land Rover brand’s magnificent handling and city-to-off-roading capabilities. To add, the dual-zone climate control, solar attenuating glass, 380-watt, 11-speaker Meridian audio system for concert-like entertainment; 8-inch high-resolution color touchscreen; Bluetooth capability; and a fouryear/50,000 mile limited warranty maintenance plan grant buyers a forgiving bang for their hard-earned buck. I had the pleasure of reviewing an Ipanema sand-colored beauty with the upgraded Pure Plus Package (including powered leather The Basics: $41,100/$47,045 with Pure Plus Package/ Climate Control Package/Sirius MPG: 21 city/30 highway, 24 combined For more information, visit LandRover.com

seats, Homelink, fog lights, 19-inch alloy wheels, powered tailgate, surround camera system for $3,000); Climate Comfort Package ($1,300 for heated seats throughout, windshield, steering wheel and washer jets ideal for inclement weather); and Sirius Satellite Radio for 3-months ($750) which collectively made the riding experience that much more enjoyable—and recommended. Mentioning “experience,” I strongly suggest truly mastering the expanded capability of all Land Rover products at their revered Land Rover Experience courses throughout the U.S., Canada, and abroad. Ultimately, the Evoque may be a smaller version of the heralded Range Rover, but nothing in the luxury and amenity department is compromised, making it a strong candidate for our automobile of the year.

Parting Thoughts

Our Favorite Place: Home Words Rhiannon Bankes

“You can't go home again”

“W

here is my home?” This seems like a simple enough question. Most of us would answer with our current address or maybe the name of our hometowns and native countries. Throughout our lives we ask ourselves this question like the baby bird asking “Are you my mother?” to every animal it sees. When we say we’re going home to visit our family and friends, we are in a sense saying that we’re returning to our roots. We go back to hometowns for family and high school reunions, or to celebrate births, marriages, and holidays, but we say that we’re going home when we leave. When life hits us with a tough blow we want to go home to grandma’s for pie while we lick our wounds before setting out in the world again. When we travel and think of home, we want the comfort of our own beds. When we move away from our parents’ home, we think of their home as a magnet that draws us back to a center. When our lives and minds are expanding, home is where we catch our breath and organize our thoughts. When we are young adults starting out with new jobs and growing families of our own, we reminisce about the home of our childhood. We remember carefree days of riding our bicycle until the streetlights came on and and sleeping peacefully at night snug under covers. We think of a time when when we didn’t worry about car payments and a mortgage but now realize that our parents did. We go back to visit 34

that neighborhood but realize that everything that was so big and shiny when we were younger, isn’t so big anymore and the houses we grew up in have other families calling them home. When we returned home for the first time from college and realized that as homesick as we were and as great as it felt to be in our parent’s home, that we can’t essentially go back in time. What we really wanted was the security of our old monotonous days. During this time of back and forth we were finding ourselves belonging to both and neither place at the same time. Home turned into a uprooted space between point A and point B. We simultaneously mourned that we couldn’t go back while we desired to go forward, making our own places in the world. As we mature, we come to understand that our yearning for home is really a desire for a time and place that no longer exists, even if the characters and location remain the same. Home becomes a space between your roots and your daily routine. Home isn’t a place but a state of mind. Home is where we are our true selves. Just as we are not defined by a single relationship or title, but rather a compilation of all of our actions, so is our definition of home. Home is transitory and malleable. Home is not a concrete structure but a concept within ourselves. Home is where we give and feel love. Home is where we hang our hats. Home is wherever we are.
