Sharing and Saving Memories

ello again, friends and neighbors!
Time flies by so fast. Thank goodness for memories. Many moments in our lives are saved in those special places inside our mind and our heart so we are allowed the opportunity to relive them again and again. With summer coming to a close and another school year beginning, be sure to capture all the images of this season... a child stepping onto a school bus... or a family and friends barbecue where the laughs never seem to end... or that last summer baseball or softball game. Before you know it, those times will have ended and those precious memories will be all that remains.

And so we celebrate the power of making memories in this issue. You will enjoy the story of a local business that turns time spent outdoors into the memory of a lifetime. We also highlight the Walk to End Alzheimer's, a terrible disease that robs us of our memories. A local student has helped give the community a memory and banner at SPASH. And a local community hero shares with us his memories and experiences from World War II; he recently had his "Wish of a Lifetime" granted. We hope you enjoy these stories and the many more we have for you in these pages. We hope the stories, calendar and updates in our publication help you to create new memories.

This magazine could not be possible without the support of its many sponsors. Be sure to remember them and show how much you appreciate their support of your local publication by supporting them and their valued community businesses.

Last but not least, if you know of a local resident or business that we should all know about, or if you have an event or activity you want to share with everyone in the Stevens Point and Plover communities, please tell us so we can share it with everyone. Thank you for being our neighbor and friend.

Around Town RIVERFRONT JAZZ FESTIVAL LABOR DAY LINEUP
UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN KICK OFF
Central Wisconsin’s largest jazz festival is back again Labor Day Weekend providing family friendly entertainment. Taking place at Pfiffner Pioneer Park along the scenic Wisconsin River in downtown Stevens Point, the festival is free and open to the public. The fest begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday September 5th with UWSP alum and returning festival favorite, Marlin McKay, and his quartet. His Indianapolis-based quartet will be playing straight-ahead jazz. At 5 p.m., KWT featuring Tom Washatka of Oshkosh, will take the stage with their electric and R&B-infused music. The Windy City’s 13-piece big band, Chicago Yestet, will be headlining the fest on Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m. It will include vocals and spoken word. On Sunday September 6th, Madison’s group, Gypsy Caravan Swing Ensemble, will open Sunday’s fest at 3 p.m. and will evoke the 1930’s hot swing music of Django Reinhardt. At 5 p.m. Judi Donaghy Vinar, a swinging vocalist from Minneapolis, will perform with her Wolverines Trio. The Tom Harrell Quartet will be headlining the festival on Sunday night at 7 p.m. Harrell is a critically-acclaimed Grammy-nominated trumpeter from New York. The Riverfront Jazz Festival debuted Labor Day weekend in 2004. Its goals were to promote local jazz musicians, nationally renowned acts, tourism and a family friendly atmosphere. In its first year the fest had an attendance of almost 2,000 people for the oneday event. In 2005 the festival expanded to a two-day event with daily attendance being over 3,000, making the event the largest Jazz Festival in Central Wisconsin in just two years. In 2007, the Festival gained new management of Riverfront Jazz Festival LLC, a 501-C3 non-profit designation and a new focus was added: to generate funds for the UW-Stevens Point Jazz Music Department. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and refreshments. There will be food from local vendors available for purchase. This Labor Day weekend plan to bring your family to the Riverfront Jazz Festival, and kick back and enjoy the last days of summer. The event is fun for the whole family, and best of all, it’s FREE!
United Way of Portage County began its 2015 campaign with a Kickoff Celebration Thursday, Aug. 13, at Ben Franklin Junior High School, 2000 Polk Street, Stevens Point. The event included the unveiling of a bold, new initiative in Portage County – the Early Years Collaborative. Working with a number of community partners, United Way outlined plans on how the collaborative will focus on the Early Years – Birth to five. “Nurturing relationships and rich learning in the early years lays the foundation for lifelong success,” says Patti Cahill, United Way of Portage County Director of Community Impact. “Since 80 percent of brain development occurs before the age of 3, this programming will help children, and their caregivers, at a time when they need it most.” In addition, Dean Dietrich, attorney and chair of the Marathon County Early Years Coalition, talked about the success of a similar collaboration in Marathon County. The presentation also included opening remarks from the Cooper family – Drs. Timmy and London Cooper; their children, Lucy, Eloise and Phineas; and their parents, Nancy and Dr. Bob Cooper – the 2015 United Way of Portage County Campaign Drive Chair family. The Coopers' also presented the results from early pacesetter campaigns at Delta Dental; Spectra Print; Midwest Hardware Association; Cherek, Pucci & Quick, S.C.; and Cooper Dental. A social including light refreshments took place from 4 to 4:30 p.m. It included a behind-the-scenes look at Project Fresh Start, United Way’s school supply drive serving 1,200 area youth each year. Project Fresh Start was held at Ben Franklin on Saturday, Aug. 15, and the facility was set up to show the amount of school supplies that will be distributed to local students. The United Way of Portage County 2015 Campaign will take place throughout Portage County at approximately 200 worksites, via direct mail, and through other individual and organizational giving. Donors of $52 or more to the 2015 United Way campaign will receive a GIVE & GET UNITED Coupon Book AND eligible donors of $52 or more will also be automatically entered into the TRAVEL UNITED Sweepstakes for a chance to win a 2016 vehicle donated by Scaffidi Motors or a number of other great prizes.

EDDIE LAMKEN GETS THE WISH OF A LIFETIME AND IS A HERO TO US ALL ARTICLE DAN WEILER & JAMES HAUGE
N
inety-year-old Eddie Lamken is a veteran of World War II who has had a passion for aviation his entire life. While Eddie grew up in Springfield, Illinois, he moved with his family to Rosholt at the age of 17. After graduating from the Army Air Corps. and completing his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, he wanted to learn how to fly the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber, but instead he was moved to an artillery unit in Europe for the duration of the war. "I remember seeing large groups of the B-29 flying over my head and thinking, 'Here comes trouble to the enemy,'" Eddie says. After being injured in the war Eddie was sent to an English hospital and then later to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C. His stay there was brief and followed by a return back to central Wisconsin. He would later maintain his interest in aviation by spend hours flying a Piper Cub around the skies over Stevens Point and also attending the annual Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture held in Oshkosh, Wis., as often as he could. However, he has been unable to travel to the event for the past six years and it was his Wish of a Lifetime™ to attend the annual gathering again. Thanks to Brookdale and the Wish of a Lifetime™ organization, Eddie’s Wish was granted on July 24 when he traveled with his family to the 2015 EAA AirVenture. “I want to thank everyone who helped organize this event for me,” says Eddie. “Everyone was so nice and accommodating, it was truly a Wish of a Lifetime.” The trip got off to a great start when Eddie got to see a Piper Cub, the plane he learned to fly while in the Army Air Corps. However, the highlight of his trip was when he took a front row seat on a private flight with

his family aboard a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, an aircraft similar to the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Bomber he dreamed of flying during the war. "Of all the years I have attended the EAA event, this is the first time I have been able to see it from the air and I am doing it in a B-17,” reflects Eddie. “This is an experience I never thought I would have, and it was better than I dreamed it would be.” Eddie was surprised by the small space inside the B-17. After crawling thru the belly side door of the B-17 and sitting down next to his son Dave, he placed his back up against the side wall of the airplane and his feet touched the opposite side wall. "I do not know how they were able to move around in such tight spaces," he says. Eddie is a resident of Brookdale Stevens Point, a senior living community, where he is known as the “energizer bunny” because he knows how to light up a room and evoke feelings of happiness in those around him. Eddie was able to take his children, Debbie, Diana and Dave, with him on his wish experience, which made the event even more special to him. The family finished the day together by watching an exciting performance by the EAA Warbirds. “That was the best war bird performance I have ever seen!” says Eddie about the show. For his next trip down the memory lane of aviation, Eddie plans to attend the local Iola Airport Friday lunch, a grass landing strip just outside of Iola where local pilots fly their small aircraft in for a lunch and sharing stories of flying and times in the blue sky. As many as 70+ small aircraft from Cessna to Pipers to Beechcraft and many more travel there for the food and good times each Friday. These are only a few of Eddie's flying experiences; he has many more stories and memories to share with others. He looks forward to seeing some Piper Cubs at the Iola lunch and observing their unique ability for short take offs and landings. Eddie is a true local hero and member of The Greatest Generation. In 2010, Brookdale Senior Living and Wish of a Lifetime formed a partnership to provide a helping hand in making some of the dreams of Brookdale’s residents come

Teaching Us to Defend Ourselves BRENT CATURA CELEBRATES 35 YEAR MILESTONE OF TEACHING KARATE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JEFF KLEMAN
L
ocal business owner Brent Catura is celebrating hitting 35. Well, he's a bit older than that. You see the "hitting" is really punching and kicking..... and the 35 is how many years he has been teaching... KARATE. Brent has been giving lessons to students and adults in many Wisconsin towns over the years. His studio is right here in Stevens Point, but his first location for training was in Marshfield. He has also had studios in LaCrosse, Iola, Wisconsin Rapids and a few other towns. The secret of his longevity has been being in tune with what customers wanted and being a good businessman as well as good karate instructor. "To teach kicking and punching is easy, teaching life lessons is a bit harder," Catura says. "But learning to run a business was the biggest challenge." He has continued to adapt and says the biggest change in his business model has been with the clientele in the studio. "When we first opened, we taught all adults. Today we have about 80 percent children and 20 percent adults." The karate student might have changed over the years, but the benefits are still the same: better reflexes and coordination, helping to increase performance in physical activities, improved appearance, muscle tone and an increased energy level are all common benefits as are increased strength, power and stamina. Better balance, increased flexibility and weight control for better overall fitness are common side effects, also. Karate is a great cardiovascular work out to keep one healthy. There are many mental benefits as well, such as improving one's self-image and self-esteem, stress reduction, increased self-control, a positive attitude, and self-discipline , helping one develop a "can do" attitude. 14
Point & Plover Lifestyle | September 2015
"Only about 1/4 of the student population is participating in high school varsity sports," says Catura. "We provide an outlet for the ones that don't do sports. Teaching life skills and lessons are a big part of what we do here. At our martial arts center we work hard to instill the same type of values stressed in the home. Things like honesty, self-discipline and self-control. Character building skills and how to behave in certain situations are important. Someone may hurt you physically or mentally, and we work on how to control one's emotions, how not to act as a victim." The creeds that our students live by are: 1) I will develop self-discipline in myself. 2) I shall always be positive in thought and action. 3) I shall work to build a more peaceful world. 4) I shall set an example of good discipline and self-control. Currently he is working in partnership with the DC Everest High School, where kids can take his "personal defense" class for high school credit. A number of Catura's students have won national titles. He was also involved with our Russian sister city, Rustov Veliky, in an exchange program, where teams traveled to each other's country for matches. Brent has been teaching long enough that black belt students he once taught are bringing their children to earn their black belt from him as well. When asked if any of those second generation black belts have brought their children in, he smiled a big smile. "No, when that happens, I'll know it's time to retire," he says. Brent and his wife, Ruth, live in Junction City, where they are raising champion hunting dogs.

Let's All Walk to End Alzheimer's WHY I WALK
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KELLY SCHELLIN
A
side from being a busy wife, mother of three amazing boys, and a training specialist at Associated Bank in Stevens Point, I am a granddaughter and an Alzheimer’s Advocate. I am walking for my grandmother, Gert Turner, who was claimed by this disease in 2010. She helped raise me and played a part in making me who I am today. She was the one who taught me how to ride a bike, sing a song, and tried her hardest to teach me how to cartwheel. (It is not as easy as it looks.) I will never forget the pain of watching her memories be taken from her, one-by-one, or the look on her face the first time I realized she did not recognize me. For those of you that have had to live with this terrible disease of Alzheimer's you know that look all to well. I witnessed the devastation of a disease that strips people of everything that makes them whole – family, friends, memories and even their dignity. 16
Point & Plover Lifestyle | September 2015
This year, Associated Bank is joining the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on September 19th. To raise money, we sponsored a week when colleagues paid $5 to dress casually, and raised almost $1000. More fundraisers have taken place throughout the summer, including a recent bake sale put on by Brookdale Stevens Point. All these fundraisers are put on with one purpose in mind, to end the disease of Alheimer's. This is my third year as the Associated Bank team captain and my first year on the local Walk Planning Committee. Associated Bank does a fantastic job of supporting local charities, and my management has supported and encouraged the company’s involvement in the Walk. Through the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I am able to honor the memory of someone who made me who I am while having the support of my employer and work colleagues. That is a rare gift. We hope to see you at this year's Walk to End Alzheimers. You can help everyone keep the memories they treasure.

any of us have spent a day in the woods hunting or on the water fishing. We all have stories we can share about the monster buck just out of shooting range or the big one that broke the line and got away. These stories are part of the experience we had and the memories we will always carry with us. It is those memories that send us back out into the woods and out on the water again and again. While the memory might not include a monster buck or a fish of record length, it is not always the trophy wild game mounts that have the best memories for us. At the newly opened Trophy Room Taxidermy, Jim Jaggar allows us to preserve those fish and animals in a special way, not only to keep the animal or fish, but more importantly the memory of that day in the woods or on the water. I have several wild game mounts in the "man cave" of my home. My kids like to call it "the Dead Animal Room." I call it my memory room. The mounts range from a black squirrel to a 12-point buck to many fish. While some of them might not be considered trophies by other hunters or fisherman, they are all considered precious memories of times past. From that black squirrel taken with my best friend on a beautiful fall day while hunting with his beloved dog, to the bluegills caught by my wife on a special day of fishing, I will never forget. Jim first started his trip down the taxidermy path when he was 13 years old. It has been his passion and favorite hobby for nearly 40 years and he has accumulated a tremendous amount of experience with creatures of fur, fins or feathers in North America. Being an avid hunter and fisherman himself, Jim has now turned his passion and hobby into a business he enjoys each and every day. As a proud member of the Wisconsin Taxidermist Association, Jim has kept up on the latest techniques for hunters and fisherman to display their memories in their home or favorite cabin. “I enjoy hearing the story about how the fish was caught or how the animal was harvested and look to develop a professional looking mount that displays that memory for a lifetime,” Jim says. He takes great pride in his attention to details so the final result CONTINUED >

has the pose, color and scenery that make each mount a one of a kind, and is exactly what the hunter or fisherman envisioned. “I do 100 percent of the work myself and in house, this way I can be assured the quality of the end work and it is exactly what the customer wanted." Because of the recent opening of Jim's taxidermy studio, he is able to create the mounted memories in a very timely manner as well. Jim works not only with wild game but also has the professional ability to airbrush wildlife paintings and other hunting-related wall art, including hand-knapped flint art like arrows, wild game rugs and antler-handled knives. He is setting up shadow boxes for hunters and fisherman to capture those other hunting materials that allowed the trip to be a success, such as arrows, broad heads, fishing lures and other tools of the wood and water trade. He is also able to create an airbrushed painting of a memory you will share with him. Like most hunters and fisherman, I truly had a great time viewing the mounts at Trophy Room Taxidermy. After seeing all the quality work Jim had on display, I felt that familiar itch to head back out to the woods or onto the water, in search of another memory that can be preserved into a lifetime treasure of that moment. 20

Paper City Savings Brings Their Caring for the Community to Plover
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PAM KUHN
P
aper City Savings was established in 1923 in Nekoosa and has offices in Wisconsin Rapids, Nekoosa and the newly opened office at 2008 County Road HH Plover. The Association continues the original mission of lending money to members of the community to buy or build homes. Over the years Paper City Savings developed into a full service community financial institution. As a depositor, your money will remain here, helping make the communities grow. Paper City Savings is Wood County’s top home lender whose passion and commitment to serving the community is what they intend to bring to Portage County. Paper City Savings and its staff are actively involved in the community, volunteering to raise funds and donating time to numerous organizations such as the Food Pantry, Family Center, Stuff the Bus Campaign, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Optimist Club, Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity and the Neighborhood Table to name a few. In addition to their involvement in various organizations, supporting local youth and high school sports program is also a priority. For the past two years, the Paper City Savings staff has built a food sculpture to 22

help support the Food Pantry. Area businesses display their food sculptures at a Wisconsin Rapids Rafters baseball game and spectators are asked to vote on the best food sculpture in various categories. We are proud to say spectators voted Paper City Savings the winner of last year’s competition. All of the food used to build the food sculptures is given to the local Food Pantry. Over the past several years Paper City Savings and its staff adopt several local families in need through the Family Center. During the holiday season a tree is displayed in the lobby decorated with ornaments of gift ideas. Customers and staff pick an ornament from the tree and purchase the gift. All the gifts are then delivered to the Family Center for the family to open during the holidays. It provides them with some happiness while they are going through some very difficult times. Each year Paper City Savings also participates in the Stuff the Bus campaign and raises funds for United Way. Customers and staff purchase school items needed for less fortunate children in the area. Paper City Savings sponsors a United Way Week Campaign within their offices by providing fun
games and prizes throughout the week for the staff. After a week of fun there is a Brat Fry held for everyone and all proceeds from the week are donated to the United Way. As a true community bank, Paper City Savings will be an active member of the community by dedicating the same commitment to non-profit organizations and local youth programs When Paper City Savings made the commitment to open an office in the Stevens Point/Plover area, it was important to provide staff members who are familiar with the local community. When you stop by the office located in the Windsor Centre you will be greeted by Dave Cooper, assistant vice president, who grew up in Stevens Point; Spencer Kohnen, branch manager, a Central Wisconsin native who will soon graduate from UWSP; Krista Meronek, Tiffany Nicholson and Lillian Beyer, customer service reps, who also live in the Stevens Point area. It is the mission of Paper City Savings to build a relationship with each and every customer by getting to know them on a personal level, understand their needs and provide outstanding customer service.

More Than Just a Great
Basketball Player ARTICLE DAN WEILER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
W
hile sitting in the bleachers last spring and watching the WIAA Division 1 boys basketball championship game, I could not help but think back to an NBA Championship game between the Chicago Bulls and the Portland Trailblazers in 1992. In that game, Michael Jordan just could not miss. While shot after shot fell through the net, he could only look to the bench and shrug his shoulders. I was witnessing a similar performance by a high school junior as he scored all 16 of his team's points in the first quarter, including four 3-pointers. After the fourth 3-pointer swooshed through the net, I was waiting for the shoulder shrug from the SPASH junior. At the same moment, my wife was texting her older sister in Elkhart Lake. They were watching the championship game on TV and the text from her sister said only one thing: "Who is this Sam Hauser?" After his dominant performance in the championship game, I am sure Germantown knows who Sam Hauser is. The Stevens Point community knows all to well how great of a basketball player Sam is, but there is much more to Sam than just basketball. Sam is also a star in the class room and in the local community. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a Scholar Athlete and maintains an impressive GPA while taking college prep classes to prepare for his future at the University of Marquette. Todd Vanderloop, a teacher at SPASH, speaks highly of Sam. "He is just a great kid with a hard work ethic in class while allowing his personality to make the class more enjoyable and fun for everyone," Vanderloop says. Sam's dedication to his studies and support of his fellow teammates in their studies have allowed the SPASH Boys Basketball team to win the WBCA Academic All-Stars Award in 2013 and to be runner up in 2014. This award is presented to the high school boys basketball team with the highest GPA in the entire state of Wisconsin each year. Sam also is out in the community supporting local programs like Operation Boot Strap where he helps deliver food and clothing to area residents in need. He also participates in the Portage County Teen Leadership Program. The program allows participants an opportunity to develop a sense of community stewardship through their active participation in community issues. Of course Sam is always there to assist the young and upcoming basketball stars of the Little Panthers youth basketball program. Kraig Terpstra, an 24
Point & Plover Lifestyle | September 2015
assistant basketball coach and instructor at the Little Panthers youth camps, compliments him. "Sam is one of the best players I have ever seen work with the young players at our basketball camps," says Terpstra. On the court and outside the playing field, Sam not only has helped place a Division 1 State Boys Basketball banner on the wall of the SPASH Gym, but he is also an outstanding golfer. He helped lead the SPASH Boys Golf Team to back-to-back conference championships and a trip to the state golf tournament earlier this year. Sam has always dreamed of leading his high school teams to conference and state championships, and worked everyday from the time he was just a little guy to make sure he would leave a lasting and positive impact on the school and community he represented. Well, Sam, your community says, "Job well done." Not only have you left a lasting image in the sports arena of SPASH, but also in the classroom and in the local community. Before you head off to Marquette University (where he plans to study sports marketing) and switch your Panther red and black for the Golden Eagles blue and gold, the local folks will have the opportunity to see you make a longer lasting impression on the community as not only an star athlete, but as a quality young man.

Back to School &
BACKPACKS THE CORRELATION TO YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH ARTICLE DR. SARA STEFAN
T
his is the time of year we think of hot afternoons, apple picking, weekend camping, and school-aged children having back pain. Wait…..WHAT? Even though you may not realize it, you did read that statement correctly. As kids go back to school, their bodies are put under undue stress and weight from all the text books and supplies they need each day. This often times results in pain, whether it be low back pain, shoulder pain or headaches. As humans, we want to avoid being in pain. It’s especially important to find the cause of pain when it involves children, as they are growing. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for your children to keep them healthy as they head back to school this fall and anytime they are carrying an extra load. First things first, check the weight of your child’s backpack on a regular basis. The total weight of the bag needs to be no more than 10-15 percent of their body weight. Any more than that and it can cause harmful effects on their spine and joints.
26
Point & Plover Lifestyle | September 2015
Once you do the math, you’ll realize that much of the time your child’s backpack is far too heavy. If your child has to carry a heavy load, make sure the heaviest items are packed closest to the body. In other words, pack text books against the back of the bag and lighter items farther away from the body. Encourage your child to use both of the shoulder straps. It may be more fashionable to only use one strap, but long term use of only one strap causes imbalances in posture and muscles leading to shoulder, neck and upper back pain. Make sure the straps are both wide and well padded. If possible, buy a backpack with a waist strap. Using the waist strap will help distribute a portion of the burden onto the hips versus all of the weight of the bag being on the back and shoulders. Another feature of a better backpack to look for is one that has built in padding across the back for comfort and protection. Roller-style bags and messenger bags have become more popular. Even though you may think a roller bag will mean reduced stress on your child’s body, that isn’t always the case. Many times children pack even more stuff into a roller bag because it’s easy to tote around. The problem then comes when they need to lift the bag up stairs or over a curb. Repeatedly tugging on a bag that weighs too much can lead to shoulder injuries. If your child can only use a roller style bag, ensure they aren’t overstuffing it and can properly lift it with their knees (and not their back) to prevent problems in the future. The same goes for a child that will only use a messenger bag. If this is the case, have your child switch the bag from side to side to keep muscles balanced and gait even. Lastly, look at your child when they have the backpack on. Make sure that bottom of the bag falls right at their hip level. What you don’t want is the bottom of the backpack too far down their legs and body. That will cause them to have an abnormal gait, increasing the likelihood for, among other things, trips and falls. Also, look at their posture with the backpack on. From the side, you want their ear to be over their shoulder and their shoulders directly in line with the hips and feet. If they have their head out in front of their body or their posture seems off, that is a problem. Always remember that posture is the window to your spine, and your spine is the window to your health. If you’re having a problem fitting your child’s backpack, ask the advice of a professional. Most chiropractors, physical therapists and pediatricians would be more than happy to help. They all care about the health of your child, especially when we know that there are 33 moveable bones in your spine all with a disc in between. Those discs act as natural shock absorbers and we don’t want to see them under unnatural compression which we know leads to long-term problems. You may not realize now the importance of having a properly fitted backpack, but do yourself and your child a favor and pay attention to prevent future problems from occurring. As the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Here’s to a healthy, happy start to the 2015 school year.

half-century ago, the war in Vietnam was escalating, the space race was in full swing, the Rolling Stones were on a world tour, the bravery of those who marched to Selma led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act, and the St. Louis Arch was completed. The United States occupied the Dominican Republic, Malcolm X was assassinated, NASA's Mariner 4 flew by Mars, race riots erupted in Watts, California, and Muhammad Ali defeated Sonny Liston. But what was it like in Stevens Point? Below are some statistics to help see what a Stevens Point resident might encounter in their day to day life: Average Home: $30,000 Average Income: $4,650 Ford Car: $1967-$3929 Milk: $1.01 a gallon Bread $.19 Gas: $.24 a gallon Chef Boy-Ar-Dee spaghetti: $ .19 Postage stamp: $.04 Swiss Steak: $.75 lb. Corned Beef: $.24 Libby's Tomato Juice : $1.00 Uncle Ben’s Rice, 14 oz box - $.19 Sunkist Oranges, 5 lbs.:$.49 Cantaloupe: $.05 Celery: $.04 lb. Tuition at Harvard: $1,250 yr. County population: 36,964 Roundtrip airfare London to New York: $453 Here's what events were happening in the small town of Stevens Point: Amid much public discussion about expanding or replacing the Carnegie library, which no longer fulfills the public’s needs, a donation of $140,000 from Charles M. White for a “project or building that will be beneficial” to the community is used to start the construction. City leaders, including Mayor Edward C. Piotrowski, decide to put the money toward a new public library building, and the search for

a suitable location begins. Eventually, the northeast corner of Clark and Church streets is chosen; it is a historic corner, once the site of the city’s first church, the Episcopal Church of the Intercession, built in 1853. Construction begins on the second public-library building. A controversial style of architecture is chosen--“brutalism”--in which the concrete surfaces are left unfinished--and a large, open atrium is the other primary stylistic feature. Years later the city’s second public library, named the Charles M. White Public Library, is dedicated. It has 20,000 square feet of space on three levels. The local college was elevated to university status as Wisconsin State University-Stevens Point and began offering graduate degrees. Seven years later, the Wisconsin State Universities merged into the University of Wisconsin system, and the school adopted its current name. The UW-Stevens Point has more than 77,000 alumni and more than half of those alumni live in Wisconsin. Robert F. Kennedy campaigns in the county and Stevens Point to gain support for his brother John F. Kennedy, who with the help from Portage County voters is elected president soon after. Other events of the decade included: The Del Monte Company opens a large vegetable processing plant at Plover, The Jordan hydroelectric plant halts operations, The central Wisconsin Vocational Technical Adult Education District is organized, Margery Albers begins the music curriculum that evolves into the American Suzuki Institute at Stevens Point, with aid from organizations and individuals a total of 9,000 acres is set aside for prairie chicken habitat on the Buena Vista Marsh, the Lyric Theater is leveled to make room for a new Woolworth’s store and plans are announced to replace the old Stevens Point post office with a modem facility. Some of us may remember these events and happenings just a half century ago , while others ask, "What is a record player or console TV?" With the arrival of the internet some may even ask, "What is a library?" Times certainly do fly by fast and before we all know it another half century will have passed. One might wonder what our younger generation will have to say when their children ask, "What is an Ipod, a Smartphone?" Or maybe even "What is the internet?"
