Editor's Letter

Oh, the first day of school… I

t’s that time to gear up for another school year. I especially love remembering the feeling of first-day-of-school jitters: the nervous excitement about meeting new friends and introducing yourself to your new teachers, and of course, scoping out all the boys that finally grew up over the summer. The first day of school was the best! Our family had the tradition of going out and getting new school clothes the same day we picked up our school supply list for that year. My favorite back-to-school memories are shopping for new clothes with my mom and two sisters then coming home and modeling them around the house for the rest of the family to see. First-day-of-school traditions look different for everybody and every family. Whether it’s waking up early for a big breakfast, writing an encouraging note to put in a lunch box or even having some one-on-one time to set goals together, making special moments like these are what creates memories. We are so blessed in our country with access to excellent education and the luxury of making special moments. It was eye opening for me to learn about the different traditions and hardships boys and girls outside of our country go through just to get an education. For many children around the world, school is a privilege attained through much sacrifice by their families. This story helped reorient me to the perspective that school IS a privilege, and to teach my children to appreciate the opportunities given them. We hope this issue inspires you to make it a great first – and every - day of school!

World Traveling Wonder Family Meet the Superfons Article Becca Mulder | Photography Provided

C

huck and Sarah Superfon have traveled all over the world with their 3-year-old daughter, Ella, and their 4-year-old son, Cohen. “I had Ella flying on a plane by 3 weeks of age, and Cohen flew at just a few months old,” says mom Sarah. “The kids have been to several places in Mexico, all over the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, Germany and France a few times.” And that is just the beginning of the story.

A Jet-Setting Family

Before their kids were born, Sarah and her husband enjoyed adventures in Madagascar, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zanzibar, Peru, the Grenadines, Anguilla, St. Marten, Dominican Republic and nearly every island in the Caribbean. That’s not all. They have been to Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora. They visited Rome, Venice and Florence. On another trip they went to the United Kingdom, Paris, Belgium and Germany. Too many places to count, but Sarah is trying: her personal goal is to see 100 countries by 50 years old. The Superfons live in the heart of Pleasant Valley on Casa Blanca. They purchased their home four years ago and have been gutting and remodeling it ever since. Their incredible the home is 6,850 12 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | August 2014

square feet. Capturing their passion for travel, many features of their home highlight their world travels as a family. And travel they do. “My 4 year old just filled up his passport,” says Sarah. The entire world map is painted on the walls with large whimsical push pins indicating the children’s travels. Their kitchen was even used for the backdrop of a cookbook. Another unique feature includes a hidden panic room in the basement that they turned into a wine cellar. They are currently working on completing their own yoga room. The favorite room in the house has to be the playroom with a room-size globe from floor to ceiling wrapping itself on to every wall so that when you are inside the room the world surrounds you. Huge whimsical pushpins in bright fun colors mark each country and city they have been to. After they visit a country a 2’ by 2’ image of an actual passport stamp is painted on the wall. As a family they talk about the map, the kids point places out asking the name, then they do internet research together with kids sitting atop parents’ laps. Everything is done with the kids. “After deciding on a country we do our research as a family,” explains Sarah. “I feel this is an important part for them, they ask many questions like why does the classroom not have desks? Why are there so many students? Why are there chickens in their house and why does the house not have windows? I let them know how lucky they are to live in this great country and let them know why we put tzedakah (a financial contribution) in the box every week. It’s our obligation to give back and if we would like to give back in the form of buying books or a desk we can.” And, A Healthy Lifestyle

It all started with a 6’ by 6’ raised box with some herbs. Their kids showed so much interest and were willing to eat new kinds of vegetables. “I find that nine times out of 10, if they cook it they will eat it. Healthy living starts at a young age and is a life long choice. My son is already screaming, ‘Does this cause cancer,’” explains Sarah. After just a short time they decided to upgrade the garden, doing a full demolition behind their guesthouse, creating a 50’ by 40’ ft area comprising 12 garden beds and three types of citrus. They are even going to plant apple trees. The beds have a large variety of veggies and fruit, the kids each have their own bed where they will be responsible for selecting the variety, shopping for it, planting it, and then caring for it (they are putting in automatic drips) the kids will pick what they would like to eat for dinner and then pick what they want in their lunch box and for snacks. With all the excess food that the garden will produce the Superfons have picked out four different organizations that they plan on dropping off food care packages to each week. They feel that this is no better gift than feeding people food that comes from their heart.

Fighting the Good Fight Colleen’s Dream Foundation is making a difference in the quest to increase survival rates for ovarian cancer Article Becca Mulder | Photography Cassie Triano from Memories by Cassie

“O

ur ultimate goal is to save lives,” says Nicole Cundiff, founder of Colleen’s Dream. Named for her mom--Colleen Drury--Colleen’s Dream Foundation is the result of a family’s long journey with ovarian cancer and a desire to make a difference in the journey of others with the disease. Colleen was diagnosed with stage 3(c) ovarian cancer in 2007. The shocking and unexpected diagnosis turned their family’s lives upside down. They were thrust into an ugly world of invasive surgeries, harsh chemotherapy and tons of uncertainty. They soon came to discover that mortality rates hadn’t changed much in 40 years. “We learned she was given a likely death sentence and we were terrified,” says Nicole. “As a family, we decided something had to be done, so we started fundraising for research and doing symptom awareness campaigns.” In 2012, after the ovarian cancer metastasized to Colleen’s lungs, Nicole Cundiff and her husband, Billy, decided the time was right to use her husband’s platform as an NFL kicker to legitimize their fundraising efforts and to really make a difference in women’s lives. With Nicole’s mom and sisters’ help, she and Billy started Colleen’s Dream to raise money for early detection research for ovarian cancer.

14 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | August 2014

“My mom served on our board of directors until she passed away from the disease last year,” says Nicole. “In our first year, we gave grants to Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, MD Anderson, Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Moores Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Arizona Cancer Center. We have committed to making Colleen’s Dream our life’s work and believe that through our efforts, we can help find an early detection test and save lives.” When ovarian cancer is found early, it is generally survivable. If a woman is diagnosed in stage 3 or 4, the five-year survival rate is very poor--only around 30 percent. Colleens Dream hopes to find more humane treatment options for women. Ovarian cancer patients are often referred to as the “walking wounded” because the treatment is so difficult and harsh. You can help by donating at ColleensDream.org and by educating your loved ones on the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. We also encourage you to attend Colleen Dream’s Events. This September, they will have a fashion show and craft beer tasting, “Craft Beer & Couture,” at the Uhaul House, which is a beautiful and timeless Frank Lloyd Wright house in Paradise Valley. Clothing will be provided by Amy, Inc. and Mae and Marie. They will also have their second annual golf tournament and “Evening of Dreams” gala in February.

I can not believe it has already been three years since we have opened. I feel like we are just getting started! Future plans? For now, I would just say growing and expanding within our current location. If we were to open another location, I would be fearful of losing that neighborhood and intimate vibe that we have going on. We really pride ourselves on having a concierge level of customer service, anticipating our regular customer’s needs and really going above and beyond to take care of them. In addition, we really work at developing our staff, not just for the job, but also for a career in this industry. Our main hair care line is Kevin Murphy, an Australian line that creates eco-friendly products that focus on the art of studio hairstyling, keeping inline with our

priorities as a salon. Other lines that we carry are EVO Haircare, Moroccan Oil, Dermalogica and Coola Sun-Care. One of our most recent additions to the salon is our easy wear boutique. Something fun for our clients to browse before and after their services. We offer jewelry, hair accessories, handbags and clothing at an average price point of $35! We cater to a wide demographic of women. Young adults providing up-dos, makeup, and nails for their special events, the business professional who is on the go needing a one stop shop for all her beauty needs, and the mature woman who wants Kensington Makeup Artists KensingtonMakeup.com Phoenix, AZ 480.717.2077

to a more youthful and fresh look. Because we really focus on creating a fun and energetic environment, we cater to women of all ages because at the end of the day, a girl just wants to have fun. Right now colored hair is very popular, but if you are not that bold or if you do not want to bleach your hair for the color to take to, you can add fashion colored hair extensions (pink, blue, purple). Add a few, or add a lot. And best of all, they are really easy to remove when you are over them. If you’re not into fashion hairs colors and just want to keep your hair looking fresh all summer, try our custom colored conditioners to moisturize and tone your hair color all summer long. Our name says it all. Our most popular service is the blowout. We offer a fabulous monthly membership for $59/mo, which includes two of any of the following services: Blowout, Makeup Application, Spray Tan, Mini Facial, Deluxe Manicure, Gel Manicure, and Spa Pedicure. Mix and match to meet you monthly needs, and get additional perks as well, like 10 percent off all salon services and retail. No strings attached, credits roll over and you can cancel anytime.

Park Avenue actually has a sister company called Kensington Makeup Artists, which I started back in 2008, specializing in on-location bridal makeup and hair services. We now have a full-time dedicated bridal coordinator who arranges bridal parties both in salon and location. We are honored that Brides magazine just named us one of the top Bridal Salons in the U.S. in their August/September Issue! For more info visit ParkAvenueBlowDry.com or call 480.321.7780

ells ring, gifts are given and trumpets are blown. The traditions surrounding the beginning of the school year vary greatly around the world. Excitement for the new school year builds, and endless lists are created. Have you ever stopped to wonder what this time of year is like for children in Asia, Africa, South America and the rest of the world? I have, and that curiosity took me into a world of the unknown. Did you know that indigenous Aetas children walk through the forest on a marked trail in Pampanga province in the Philippines to make it to their first day of school? Or that Uros children of Peru and Bolivia have to take a boat to get to their school on Uros Island of Lake Titicaca in order to have the opportunity to learn. Even in America we have such a vast array of culture and traditions--from the Amish children heading to their newly built school in Nikel Mines, Penn., to New York City kids taking the subway 18 blocks to school for their first day. A lot of Americans have the luxury of being driven in a warm car or bus to a good school nearby. This is not the case for many children in the rest of the world, some of whom make treacherous trips 18 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | August 2014

each day to get an education. There are currently 61 million children worldwide who are not receiving an education, the majority of which are girls. For those children, the trials of the trips must seem well worth it. United States

The American experience of school is a time for traditions, school spirit and back-to-school rallies. Girls tirelessly await homecoming, boys that can’t wait to try out for their school’s sports team. Family traditions are built around the annual first day back -- a big dinner the night before or a breakfast together in the morning. Whether private or public, schools typically run from August to May. For most of the world around us, the experience is quite different. Germany

On the first day of school, German students receive a large paper cone called a schultuete. Filled with toys, school supplies, trinkets and candy a schultuete has been tradition since the 1800’s.

Typically a schultuete is given to a first grader on their official first day of school. China

Traditionally, September 1 is the first day of the new school year in China. The average school day runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., the school year ends in mid-July. Typically even summer breaks are spent inside classrooms preparing for entrance exams for the com-

ing year. Traditions include raising their country’s flag while pledging the students love for country, school, classmates and teachers. Costa Rica

Costa Rica was one of the first nations in Central and South America to offer free public education and is one of the most literate nations in Central America with over 96 percent of students over the age of 15 being able to read. Students begin college at age 15 as well. Nearly half the federal government spending goes towards education and health care.

In-House Bakery

Iran

Students in Iran go to school for 10 months out of the year. Boys and girls are educated separately; girls typically have female teachers while boys are taught by men. Beginning at age 5 all students are required to pass a yearly exam in order to go on to the next grade level. Because many schools are remote, they do not have the money for things such as libraries so resourcefulness is taught early on. They do however have mobile libraries bringing books to 4,000 students in 40 different schools.

Award-Winning Car Wash & Detail

France

French students go to school four days a weeks with a two-hour lunch break. Though the days are fewer, they are as long as an adult work day for children even as young as 6 years old. At the end of the school year they hold what is called a kermesse, which is a mini carnival or fair for the younger aged kids. Though our traditions and cultures may vary from country to country, state to state and house to house, one thing we all have in common is the desire to give our children the best education they can have. This year, let’s celebrate the opportunities we have and appreciate the opportunities given to us, no matter where or what they are.

ivy jane In 1986, designer Frances Malik took a deep breath, a leap of faith and a chance: She started her first fashion design firm. The dream had been in her head seemingly forever and she felt that 1986 was right time to finally do it. Everything about life inspires this artist. “Just about anything and everything inspires me,” she says. “Something I saw in a movie or heard in a song. Something romantic from long ago in a vintage shop or something colorfully quirky I just saw on the street. The fun is to mix-up all that inspires me to give the clothes their own identity.” Her clothing line includes contemporary sportswear and dresses and is still going strong with Boho Chic. The most popular piece is Novelty embroidered tops and patchwork pieces. Frances is known for her ability to create different looks with a masterful combination of fabrics and prints. She drew inspiration from a few of her family members, and she shares a little bit about these unique characters and their influence on her designs:

• There’s Ivy Jane. She’s bright and colorful, quirky and fun. She seems to be everyone’s friend and if she’s usually a bit late, who cares? I know she saw something interesting on the way and she can’t wait to tell me about it. • There’s Uncle Frank. He’s easy going and generous. He always seems to find the good in everyone and something funny to say about everything. • There’s Aunt Wanda. She’s has a strong soul, a generous heart, a quiet dignity and a very good sense of humor. • And finally, there’s Cousin Earl. He’s strong, determined, honest, generous, funny, friendly and a bit mischievous. He always seems to become everyone’s best friend. It is to the inspiration of these four people that she dedicates her company. Uncle Frank consists of dresses and tunics only. The Cousin Earl line has tops, pants, shorts and dresses that are targeted to a younger age group. Visit IvyJane.com for more information.

Fall Fashion Advice From Biscotia and Kate Mack • Stay true to who you are. • Try the news trends such as color blocking, faux leather, jewel embellishments and mod prints, but don’t try to buy every single trend that is out there. Pick your favorites and stay on budget. This is a good lesson to learn at any age! • Add accessories like scarves, fun vests, colorful jewelry and cute footwear to create a look that is all your own. Dress age appropriately, especially tweens. • Don’t try to look older than you are.

Parent’s Corner • Keep It Fun! Teens are still tender at heart! While they long to be grown, there are parts that are still enjoying childhood joys. So, create a celebration of the back to school days! Make a countdown chart in the kitchen, take them for a fresh haircut, leave a note of funny things you remember from being their age and/or hopes you have them this year. Some more ideas are to visit the school before it starts just to say hello to staff for a pre-school connection, make shopping day fun by planning out what is needed and the best places to look then enjoy stopping for a treat as you chat about how your child feels about the year, or have some close friends over for a back to school hang out time or dinner out. Their tender teen hearts may or may not express how much all this means but they will enjoy, appreciate and remember all you have done.

Transitioning with Teens Back to School looks different at this age than elementary school Article Casey Gibbons

T

he excitement I had for going back to school changed dramatically after elementary. The joys of a new lunch box, meeting my teacher, discovering how much recess time was allotted and hoping friends noticed that I had lost a baby tooth were soon replaced by thoughts in the mind of a blossoming teenager. I looked forward to the status of being in an older grade, the fun of electives, seeing friends every day, and showing the world how much I had matured through the summer. But I also had other no-so-exciting emotions. I wondered if my clothes would be cool enough, what classes to take for college preparation, how to manage the endless social dramas, and if I was going to make the JV or Varsity basketball team. Back to school had certainly changed. Certainly, if you are in the midst of raising a teen, then you know students are the only ones feeling the change. What used to be a fun trip hand-in-hand to Wal-Mart for a pack of décor pencils has turned into a Mall trip with much discussion of what is or isn’t allowed. It’s a time of change for the parents as much as the student. So what are some insights into making the best of school preparation with your teenage child?

24 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | August 2014

• Keep It Simple! With all the changes during those teen years, simplicity is a gift that some teens aren’t sure how to acquire. Every where they go, there are options and decisions for them to be involved in something. Whether it’s more classes, afterschool clubs, sports, church activities, community events, friendships, homework, home jobs or even a workplace job, there is much to be done! If you can help them narrow down their choices and responsibilities with logical reasoning it will help them not

be overwhelmed. Think through their natural abilities, personal interest (not just because someone else wants them to do it), weekly schedule, daily schedule, cost, responsibilities and necessity to do what is offered. As you move through a time of investigation and discussion, you will both learn what will be the best for all involved. This will keep things simple which helps the teen and the whole family.

ty to discuss the realities of teen pressures, friend issues, personal struggles, and deeper emotions. Going into the school year with the support of a parent that works to stay close gives incredible stability for the developing teen and endless rewards for you as the parent! These days may be different from years past but it can be a meaningful and enjoyable time in the journey of parenting as your teen goes back to school.

• Keep It Close! While these years are a time to offer more freedom and growth, this is also a critical time to stay close to their heart. They may or may not seem interested or may not be home as much but they do still need you! It will take some planning and patience on your part but keeping them close is a must. As you go into the school year, have a conversation about your love for them and desire to stay connected. Then go into the fall with plans for meals as a family, set weeknight or weekend outings, leave notes of encouragement as well as be willing to stay up for those late-night chat times, attend their activities, create time to know their friends, and do whatever it takes to get into their world. In return, having a close relationship that makes an effort to be together gives more opportuni-

Add Balance to Packed Lunches and Snacks W

hen you supply your kids with nutritious and sensible choices, you’re ensuring a productive day in the classroom and beyond. It’s simple to make lunch and snack time fun by tossing in some new, wholesome options that add variety and appeal for your little learner.

• Protein Picks: To keep them feeling satisfied and fuller longer, include a few protein-packed choices in their lunch bag. Some options include roasted chicken, steamed edamame, hard boiled eggs, nuts or a Mini Babybel cheese. With seven delicious flavors that offer 5-6 grams of protein and 15-20 percent of daily calcium needs, this cheese snack is sure to satisfy.

Add new foods to the mix

The most important nutrients parents seek when selecting the foods they feed their kids are protein, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin D and iron.1 While stocking up on foods rich in these nourishing elements is certainly helpful, there’s no way to ensure your child will eat them. But recent studies have found that kids are actually more likely than their parents to be the first of their friends to try new food or nutrition products.1 Take the opportunity to start nutritious eating habits at a young age with flavorful food combinations that create balance at snack and meal time. For example, pair a kid- and parent-pleasing choice, such as Mini Babybel ® cheese, a 100 percent natural cheese with a rich and creamy taste, with their favorite fruit or vegetable. In fact, a recent study shows that replacing non-nutrient rich snack foods like chips with a combination of cheese and vegetables can help reduce calories by 72 percent and keep kids feeling fuller longer.2 Easy ways to pack

To help parents make better choices while grocery shopping, Catherine McCord, author of Weelicious Lunches and Weelicious.com, and Mini Babybel Brand Advocate, offers these tasty ideas to make lunches and snacks more wholesome for the whole family: 28 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | August 2014

• Sweet Additions: Make their midday meal and snack time more complete with the addition of one or two servings of fruit. Some delicious options include apples, apricots, strawberries, blueberries, kiwis or pears. • Fresh Finds: Many vegetables offer fiber and other nutrients not found in other snacks. Throw in a bag of chopped vegetables, such as baby carrots, broccoli florets, celery, red bell peppers or sugar snap peas. With a balanced approach to eating, you’ll be able to send the whole family off to school or work prepared for whatever their busy day brings. You may also introduce them to some new favorite foods. Parting Thoughts

The Start of Something New Words Hona Amer

T

he sun greeted me as I started the walk into the building. The birds were singing in the trees. Everything was new. I could feel it all around me. There was an excitement in the air. People were talking to new friends. I made my way to a classroom, nervous and excited at the same time. As I walked into the room, I took a deep breath, hoping for the best. The day had new written all over it. The first day of a new adventure can leave us breathless. We don’t know where the journey will lead us. So, we simply have to take the first step. The first day of college couldn’t have been better – full of nervous moments and meeting new friends. After sitting through classes and meeting professors, I had a sense of what that season would resemble. It would be an adventure; however, I couldn’t see all that it would become. I just knew that it would challenge and change me. In order to start, I had to embrace the new things coming into my life. The new school year comes every August, as the fun moments of summer are tucked away until next year. The passing of summer is bittersweet. It represents a season of fun, vacation, picnics, and family time. Every year when August rolls around, the backto-school signs decorate the stores and the bouquets of freshly sharpened pencils can make even the saddest heart excited for school. When we are students, we associate August with the start of a new school year, but then we eventually graduate from high school. We might pursue additional education by going to college, but that season will eventually come to an end as well. We start working, have a family, and eventually take kids back-to-school shopping. The signs of the changing season are still recognizable. Even if you aren’t going back to school, the start of a new school 34 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | August 2014

year can be a start of a new season for you as well. You might not be carrying a backpack and school supplies, but you can use it as a new starting point in your year. January tends to receive all the hype for making new resolutions and goals. It’s the time when the calendar has turned the page to a fresh year. We remember that anything is possible, and it holds so much promise. January might seem like the best time to make resolutions and start something new. But, as the season begins to change in other people’s lives around you, right now is a great time to start, too. As we grow older, we still need markers to remind us of where one thing begins and something else ends. Starting a new school year tends to mark that summer is coming to an end, but the end of one season is only the beginning of something new. If we are going to begin a new season in life, we have to be willing to embrace new challenges and opportunities. Instead of waiting until the next calendar year to start pursuing your dream, embrace a healthy lifestyle, or accomplish something on your bucket list, why not start now? Whatever you need to begin or end, let this season be a marker in your life to start right where you are today. May the welcome of August usher in a new season of possibilities.
