In its 12th year, the car show and party raised $505,228 to fund a cure for CF – bringing the lifetime total of event fundraising to $2.62 million.

Last summer Holly’s team was working on a therapy room for a boy living with autism. He is being raised by his single mom and they needed a room where he could work on his therapy and feel safe. They partnered with local Roswell designer Ryan Williams - Artisan Design Studio (featured in this issue!) and Randall Brothers provided the materials. “His favorite things are swinging, jumping, and climbing. Carson also likes small places, like a tent or under the bed, to hide if he’s having a bad day. Like all mothers, and as a single mother of two, Carson’s mother is concerned with balancing activity and safety,” says Holly. He now has his own pirate ship ball pit with a hidden area for quiet time. Everything was personalized just for him. “Randall Brothers saved us by donating all of the lumber to build this!” Randall Brothers handles new home, custom new home and renovation construction with three locations. Samantha Shelton started FurKids to save homeless animals from being needlessly euthanized. In the last 20 years, she has worked tirelessly to save the lives of over 50,000 “furkids”. We talked to Samantha recently to learn more about Furkids and for some holiday adoption advice. RL: WHY SHOULD SOMEONE ADOPT A PET FROM FURKIDS? SS: FurKids serves 5,000 animals per year and we work hard to be matchmakers. We take our time to get to know the applicant and help them make the right choice. We want these adopters to become connected with us so we can continue to be a resource. We have about 855 animals available for adoption now. RL: WHAT LED YOU TO START THIS ORGANIZATION? SS: I knew it was the right thing to do. I felt called to do this. Euthanizing animals struck me as so horrible. I threw myself into Furkids. Now it’s a large operation that employs 66 people and manages over 1000 volunteers. I'm proud of the work we've done and excited about the impact we've had on animals and humans who get to experience an animal’s loving, healing bond. RL: WHAT ARE FURKIDS' IMMEDIATE NEEDS? SS: We need people to provide loving homes to the animals in our program and volunteers to help in our shelters. Monetary donations are always appreciated as are donations of household goods for our thrift stores.

RL: WHAT DO YOU TELL FAMILIES WHO WANT TO ADOPT PETS AS HOLIDAY PRESENTS? SS: We recommend families make sure they’re ready to adopt a pet and make a lifetime commitment. Pets can live 15-20 years! It’s important that everyone in the family is on board. It's always a great time to adopt but it shouldn't be a spur of the moment decision. It’s not recommended that someone give an animal to someone else. It’s important for people to select and bond with their own pet. Instead, try putting together a goody bag of pet-related items and offer to pay an adoption fee. RL: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF FURKIDS HOLD? SS: We are excited about purchasing nine acres of land and building an amazing campus. In April, we're opening a 4,000 square foot event facility, available for the community to rent. This will be a "destination shelter" where people can develop deeper relationships with animals in a beautiful setting. It's going to be magical.

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

The Perfect Sugar Cookies OUR EDITOR'S DAUGHTER, JANE COLLINS, IS THE COOKIE QUEEN AND WE ASKED HER TO SHARE HER GO-TO COOKIE RECIPE.

+ 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour + 1 teaspoon baking powder + 1 teaspoon kosher salt + 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, at room temperature + 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar + 2 large eggs + 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract + 1 tablespoon orange or lemon zest In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, using an electric or stand mixer, beat together butter and sugar on medium-high until the mixture is light, fluffy and pale, 2 to 3 minutes. Scrape down sides of the bowl, and add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla, and beat until everything is well combined, stopping to scrape down the bowl as needed. Add dry ingredients all at once, and mix on low speed just until incorporated. Scrape dough out of bowl and divide it in half. Wrap each piece in plastic wrap, patting into a 1-inch-thick disk. Chill at least 2 hours and up to 5 days. Heat oven to 325 degrees. Roll out dough, one disk at a time, on lightly floured parchment paper or work surface
