ere we are with our second issue of Sacramento Lifestyle. Wow!

Corrie Pelc | Corrie.Pelc@LifestylePubs.com

contributing writers Mark Billingsley, Pam Baker

The first of anything offers many emotional responses. Our first child is both a miracle and exciting. Our first car made us feel responsible and adventurous. Our first trip abroad offered the possibility that the world was ours to explore and conquer and yet there was no place like home. Welcome to our “At Home” edition. The first publication has me so very excited about the relationships that have been so quickly forged. The realization that together we can achieve anything we set our sights on is also exciting and together we can touch the lives and lifestyles of so many through this magazine.

GREEN APPLE DAY OF SERVICE Community volunteers, students, parents and school administrators convened at Leonardo Da Vinci School in Sacramento on Sept. 26 to help create a more sustainable learning environment for students through the Green Apple Day of Service program. Improvements at the school included a general garden clean up, sealing of the aquaponics stations, and preparing the garden beds for fall planting. The school gardens and aquaponics system (freestanding units for cultivating water-based plant and small animal life) provide students with hands-on experience and a first look at the importance of protecting our natural environment. In addition to the service project, renowned local artist Milton Bowens displayed work from his new collection “The Lost Mother Nature Diaries” during the event. Green Apple Day of Service events took place throughout the United States and in communities around the globe on Sept. 26. Breast cancer survivors and their supporters recently launched a drive to urge California motorists to order "Pink Ribbon License Plates" that deliver a message of early detection and help fund breast cancer screenings for underserved women. At least 7,500 pre-orders are needed for the Department of Motor Vehicles to begin producing the plates. Orders can be made at PinkPlate.org. Funds generated from the California Pink Ribbon License Plate will allow more women across California to get regular breast exams and mammograms, potentially saving the lives of countless women. The funds will be directed to the Breast Cancer Control Account, which funds the state's Every Woman Counts administered by the California Department of Health Care Services. The agency partners with county departments of public health and county health consortia across California to provide women with local, easy access to screenings. PinkPlate.org

WINE TASTING IS JUST A

Delta Breeze DISCOVER UNHURRIED, UNCROWDED WINERIES IN SACRAMENTO’S BACKYARD ARTICLE PAMELA BAKER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

15 minutes from Sacramento, but a world away, the wine Just tasting region of the California Delta beckons to residents as well as visitors looking for a convenient, yet local getaway. Take a leisurely drive along the meandering Sacramento River on a warm autumn day and discover unhurried, uncrowded wine tasting at family-run, local wineries. Enter this part of the Delta and see pear farms, grape vines and small towns full of California history. Down a river road, past Rio Vista, the Sacramento River suddenly widens and changes, flowing toward the Antioch Bridge and eventually making its way to the San Francisco Bay. Discovering wine tasting in this region is an easy and relaxing adventure. To get to the Delta wine region, head south out of Sacramento on Interstate 5. Take the Pocket/Meadowview exit, heading east and turn right on Freeport Blvd (Highway 160). Within a few minutes, you enter the tiny town of Freeport, the gateway to 12

Sacramento Lifestyle | November 2015

the Delta. Cross the historic Freeport Bridge and continue south about two miles to the Old Sugar Mill, a repurposed sugar mill that now houses wine tasting rooms for 11 local wineries. It would be easy to spend all day here, but to see more of the region, move on to Bogle Winery, just a few miles south, past Clarksburg on South River Road. Bogle is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic on the spacious grounds, surrounded by vineyards. The grassy area is dotted with picnic tables and chairs. Take advantage of the balcony seating upstairs outside of the tasting room and enjoy a bottle of wine. The Bogle family has been farming since the 1880s, and planted their first wine grapes in 1968. Bogle wines are now distributed internationally, but the tasting room still retains its original charm. Popular wines include Viognier, produced every other year, and the Phantom Red, a blend of petite sirah, zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon and mourve`dre.

WHERE TO EAT:

Looking for a fun place to eat before hitting the wineries, or in-between? Try Husick’s in Clarksburg. The restaurant opened in 2014 and offers barbeque ribs, tri-tip and other meats. The menu also features salads and a variety of sides that pair well with barbecue, including Coca Cola beans, coleslaw, greens and macaroni and cheese that’s a crowd favorite. The restaurant serves 14 beers on tap and offers wine tasting from four local wineries. The atmosphere is funky and takes advantage of its origins as a hardware store. WHERE TO STAY:

The Westin Sacramento (WestinSacramento.com) overlooks the Sacramento River and is just a 10-minute drive to Freeport via Interstate 5. Embassy Suites (EmbassySuites3.Hilton.com) also overlooks the Sacramento River, just a few miles north of the Westin, and next to Old Sacramento at the Capitol Bridge. DELTA TOURS:

Arrange a wine tasting tour through Delta Heartbeat Tours, offered Thursdays through Sundays at $60 per person. The company uses comfortable mini-buses to visit some of the Delta’s best wineries and also offers tours to nine Delta towns, as well as custom tours. Call 916.776.4010 or go to DeltaHeartbeatTours.com.

The Sacramento River meanders through the Delta providing a nice backdrop for wine tasting trips.

Heading back on the river road towards Clarksburg, make a stop at Julietta, a beautiful winery new to the region, or Miner’s Leap, which boasts a spacious outdoor setting for wine tasting and special events. Alternatively, cross back over the Freeport Bridge and head south on the River Road (Highway 160) to Scribner Bend Vineyards, owned by Mark and Lorraine Scribner. The winery offers a small, but lovely picnic area surrounded by rose bushes, and a giant outdoor tent used for weddings and winery events. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and always happy to pour a second taste of something you tried but aren’t quite sure about.

The Scribner Bend Vineyards began as a farm in 1893 and started wine sales in 2001. The wine tasting room opened in 2002 and the Scribners can be found in the tasting room from time to time, chatting with customers or pouring wine. The Reserve Chardonnay is one of the newer additions to their wine selection. This wine only comes in a 375 ml bottle and features that old-fashioned, oaky, buttery chardonnay. There are now 20 wineries in the Delta wine region. Not all have tasting rooms yet, but look for that to change in this wine-growing region as more and more Northern Californians discover what has quickly become a popular wine tasting destination. A CUT Salon N Brings Big-City Hair Styling to Sacramento ARTICLE CORRIE PELC PHOTOGRAPHY DARIN BRADFORD

lthough she may be a farm girl at heart, Nancy Leonard, owner of the recently opened Salon N, is all about bringing bigcity hair knowledge to Sacramento. Having lived in Sacramento off and on throughout her life, Leonard decided to return to her hometown roots after completing her hair stylist training at the Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology in San Francisco. "I had a question as to whether I wanted to stay in San Francisco and do big-city hair, or take that big-city knowledge and 14

come to Sacramento and build something where it was a more boutique, personalized, small-town feel," Leonard says. "So that's what I did. I came to Sacramento." After working for a few downtown salons, Leonard finally took the plunge two years ago and opened her own salon in East Sacramento. After building a roster of clients — she sees about 110 customers a month — Leonard decided to make the move to the Arden area and open Salon N. COMPLETE PERSONALIZATION

Leonard says her concept for Salon N, at the Arden Town Center at the corner of Watt Avenue and Fair Oaks Boulevard, was to create a salon that combines a family approach with complete personalization.

SALON N

620 Watt Avenue, Sacramento 916.467.4653 SalonNHairDesign.com Facebook.com/Hairsalonn620

Nancy Leonard, center, and her team of stylists will compete early next year in an international hair styling competition in Los Angeles.

"I joke and say come in your pajamas for all I care, and make sure you love your hair when you leave," she says. "I always go by the motto of ‘We're in it together and I'm on your side,’ and I have their best interests in mind." Salon N employs a team of seven hair stylists, all specializing in a specific area, such as precision hair cutting, hair color, updos and blowouts. "When I get a new client with Salon N, I customize who that new client needs to go to depending on what she wants and needs," Leonard says. "It's awesome because I hit every single demand as to what they need. I don't want to give everybody the same hair cut; everything is a custom hair design.” To achieve that level of customization, Leonard and her team pay close attention not

only to the latest trends and seasonal changes, but also who their clients are: the texture of their hair, skin color and even their mood. "Moods have a lot to do with change," Leonard explains. "A client will come in, and if they want a complete redo, we will ask them what's going on in their life. We're therapists really. We take a moment to sit down with our client at eye level and see what's going on. If we don't dig in, how are we going to know that bangs are going to work for that person?" COMING UP

As for the future of Salon N, Leonard has a number of things planned. Her and her team are practicing for a national competition early next year in Los Angeles.

Additionally, Salon N is now offering Third Thursday Hands-On Hair How-To classes for clients and guests. The one-hour classes offer hairstyling tips and tricks and will have a different focus each month, including kids hairstyling, holiday hairstyling, how to create the perfect curl and how to use styling tools. Call 916.467.4653 for more information and to make a reservation. And in summer 2016, Leonard will be launching her private label hair care line called Dash of Diamonds. The first product will feature a nutrient serum with sparkle that can be applied to both the hair and skin. "It's a product that represents me – sparkley, classy, a little elegance to put in your hair and put on your skin," Leonard says.

"When coming to this beautiful country, you have dreams -- you want to do better in life, you want to provide the best for your family, and the first step is definitely learning English and getting those skills," Carranza says. After finding a flyer promoting ESL classes at SFBFS, Carranza recalled being shocked to find out that not only were the classes completely free, but the Food Bank also provided other free services such as a playcare program where her daughSACRAMENTO ter could stay while FOOD BANK she took her classes. & FAMILY SERVICES "Back in Mexico we don't have Oak Park Main Campus anything like the 3333 Third Ave., Sacramento Food Bank,” Carranza says. “So I 916.456.1980 was so surprised, so amazed to learn SacramentoFoodBank.org about the services.” A few months after taking ESL classes, SFBFS had a job opening for a receptionist. Most recently she held the position of parent education manager where she taught parenting skills classes on a variety of topics, including prenatal, postpartum and general parenting tips. Carranza will take on the role of CalFresh manager in December and will help families apply for CalFresh benefits. Carranza says she gives thanks every single day for the help she received from SFBFS and for being in a position now to help other families in need. "I cannot believe that I'm actually able to do this because I have been there -- I was in need when we came to the U.S., just like many families who are coming from other countries or Mexico," Carranza says. In partnership with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, the service works with refugee families upon their first 90 days in the United States, providing them with housing, food and clothing, as well as assisting families with enrolling for benefits, ESL classes, job placement and other services. Sarvary says the Food Bank's Refugee Resettlement Services was a big help to his family, even going above and beyond. "They helped me with providing housing, food and all these things," he says. "Where they placed me in Sacramento, I'm very happy. Where I'm living is a calm area in a good neighborhood." Now Sarvary is giving back to other refugee families as a refugee resettlement assistant for SFBFS. Sarvary provides transportation for clients so they can apply for benefits, Social Security numbers and other things they may need for their family during their first 90 days in the United States. hen Marc and Christine Jang bought their Pocket-area home in 1998, they looked past the Roman faux marble columns and the clear, glass-block wall in the entry way. Neither was into the Caesar's Las Vegas look. Marc Jang would much rather catch a fish than a straight f lush at a Vegas poker table. Both led busy lives and the dated interior plus a under utilized kitchen didn't bother them much until Marc retired in 2011 after selling his outpatient care centers. Marc bought an expensive fishing boat and that's when Christine, an OB/ GYN, put her foot down. "She said if I get a boat then it was time for her to get her dream kitchen, at least," Marc Jang says. Enter the design talents of Steve Frkovich Casci of Casci Designworks, Inc. Casci sketched out his vision for the extensive remodel job starting with the kitchen and glass cube wall that reminded people more of a Vegas nightclub from the 1980s than a home worthy of the prestigious River Lake area. Home Matters

(CONTINUED)

The newly redesigned and redone kitchen is the heart of Mac and Christine Jang's Pocket area home.

The Jang's ferocious guard dog is surrounded by custom iron work on the staircase

Contractor Wes Chow, left, and Marc Jang have been friends since middle school. Interior designer Steve Casci, right, has become good friends with both.

26

Sacramento Lifestyle | November 2015

"Marc and I did all the shopping," Casci says. "Then we'd hand things off to Wes Chow, our contractor, and he'd put it all together. My speciality is putting together permit-ready plans. We broke the project into two parts - the kitchen first and then pretty much everything else." There's already a sort of granny f lat on the second f loor, complete with a full kitchen. So for the duration of the kitchen remodel, the Jangs lived upstairs part of the time. Everything with the remodel was custom built, including the honed granite island top with leather finish. Chow, who has been friends with Marc Jang since their days as students at Sam Brannan Middle School, removed the glass block entry way wall and utilized the space as more storage and usable area for the kitchen. He concealed 13 LED lights in the kitchen ceiling that are dimmable and emit zero glare from distracting beams of light. Casci and the Jangs decided to leave some of the glass block cubes on the back splash facing River Lake as an ode to the original design of the home that was built in 1990.

"I call the design of this house 'timeless contemporary,'" Casci says. "We used a custom forged hood over the Wolf range. In fact, there's custom metalwork all over this house." Once the kitchen remodel was complete, Chow put up a large plastic sheet to protect the new addition and got to work implementing Casci second phase - the entry way, the formal dining area, the living room and the bar. A custom staircase with welded iron was designed and built, custom roller doors that slide to open up the formal dining area and a bar area that matches the kitchen are just some of the master design elements Casci created for the Jangs. The end result of the eight-month design and build was so successful that Casci has become good friends with the Jangs and with Chow, who owns Wesco Construction. Casci and Chow have since worked on several projects together. "We told Casci what we wanted based off of Internet research and then he took those ideas and ran with them," Marc Jang says. "He did a great job working with us."

The Chinese art on the entry way wall is a custom original piece from San Francisco's ChinaTown.

Parting Thoughts

Give Thanks Every Day WORDS MARK BILLINGSLEY

T

hanksgiving a year ago was unlike any of the other some 47 I've been around to celebrate. Thanksgiving 2014 was the first time in my life I didn't get to celebrate with my father. He was recuperating from a stroke and was too weak to travel or to host the holiday as he and my mother had done forever. I was thankful that he was still alive and was recovering very well from the stroke. I was thankful for my mom, who is the rock of our family. Not only was she caring for dad, but she was trying very hard to keep Thanksgiving dinner on the calendar and on the menu. But my sisters and I were not about to be a bunch of turkeys and be a burden. Mom had enough to worry about. We all did. And what was odd, I was thankful for that worry. It takes an event like a loved one suffering an accident or some other sort of calamity for us to realize just how lucky we have it. So be thankful for all the blessings you have, and not just on Thanksgiving Day. Be thankful every day. Without the family meeting at Mom and Dad's for Thanksgiving Day dinner, we rallied around our own smaller family units, knowing that we would make up for the lost holiday together and the dinner celebration when Dad was feeling better. I volunteered to cook my first turkey. I got a quizzical look from my wife, who is a wonderful cook, but she encouraged me nonetheless.

34

Sacramento Lifestyle | November 2015

I'm thankful for her every day. Our daughter, then 11 years old, volunteered to make several side dishes and she aced each one. I'm thankful for her every day. We sat down at our dinner table in our warm house and had a Thanksgiving feast for three. Our home smelled wonderful. The rich aroma of fresh rosemary tucked under the turkey's shimmering crisp skin, along with the smell of the stuffing and the sweet smell of the candied yams were intoxicating. We had more than enough food that day and we had a roof overhead. I'm thankful for those two things every day. I'm thankful for a lot of things: my career, my friends, my health, my country and my faith. I'm thankful for this magazine and the opportunity to provide news and entertainment to so many. I realize, though, that it can all be taken away in an instant. We're all just one heartbeat away from not being at the table for the next Thanksgiving dinner. So be thankful that you are. As a way to honor that fact, give back to your community so someone can tell you "Thanks." In that respect you're giving thanks. Thanks giving. Live a lifestyle that you can be thankful for every day.
